If you can imagine the gathering of a group of Australian session musicians channelling the sounds of Herbie Hancock Headhunter's and Marc Moulin's Placebo, recording an album out of hours at a TV studio and then releasing a privately pressed hard hitting jazz funk record then what you have is Arena, one of Australia's most revered and scarce rare groove records.
This was the name given to a pick-up group of session players led by Ted White, a veteran of the British big band jazz scene (an associate of Ted Heath and Basil Kirchin) who had immigrated to Australia in the 1960s to work in the burgeoning television industry. This one-time studio project (recorded only to test out the facilities for a new studio) barely yet thankfully saw an LP release in 1975. Pressed in minute quantities only with limited distribution, the album was subsequently forgotten and obscured by time, only to be resurrected in the 90s by DJs and collectors seeking out lost and rare records.
The album has since become one of the country's most celebrated and collectible jazz funk recordings and has proved to be a pivotal point in Australian jazz, marking a shift from the modern jazz and R&B sounds of the previous decades to the cross pollinating electric jazz funk of the 70s. Characterized by the heavy use of electronically treated saxophone, psychedelic guitar, Moog and spacey Fender Rhodes, the album is a classic of the genre.
While acknowledging the often compiled and sampled breaks track, The Long One, the complete album offers much more, exemplified by its complicated and obsessive jazz rhythms, abstract and middle-eastern horn lines and pulsing electric funk.

Over the course of five albums, Manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the UK music scene as one of it's brightest talents. His languid, soulful music has won friends from Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson to Jazz FM and Mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. His new album Into Forever, puts the spotlight on Halsall the composer, arranger and producer. Halsall draws on a diverse range of influences from Alice Coltrane, Dorothy Ashby, Phil Cohran and Leon Thomas to the more contemporary sounds of The Cinematic Orchestra, Max Richter and Nils Frahm to deliver his most complete recording to date. On his album Songs from Okinawa, Sven Kacirek explores the traces of a unique traditional music from the famed Pacific islands south of Japan. He recorded a wide range of local musicians - both amateurs and well-known figures - and carefully wove in his own instrumentation: marimba, xylophone, and piano. The result is an album of timeless beauty and quiet elegance. The southern Japanese archipelago of Okinawa has a complex and turbulent history, particularly shaped by the conflicts between Japan and the United States - an aspect thoughtfully outlined in the liner notes by Mina Mermoud. Over the centuries, this layered past has given rise to a rich and distinctive musical culture. During the U.S. military occupation of the islands, Okinawan musicians began blending traditional forms with Western styles. Today, Okinawan music is recognised in Japan as a genre of its own. "I"m fascinated by the sublime simplicity and precision of Okinawan music - from its orchestration to the phrasing of the singing voice," says Kacirek. True to this admiration, he keeps many of the original vocal and instrumental recordings intact, gently adding his marimba or percussion without ever pushing himself into the spotlight.

Factory Benelux presents a new studio album by cult Manchester postpunk group Crispy Ambulance, issued in a
limited edition of 500 vinyl copies to mark Record Store Day 2015.
In many respects Compulsion is the second album Crispy Ambulance might have recorded in 1982 after the release of
The Plateau Phase, with six of the eight tracks written and performed live at that time. To these are now added Rain
Without Clouds, an outtake from The Plateau Phase newly restored from the original multitrack masters, and WMTP.2
with added synth lines by producer-cum fifth member Graham Massey, of 808 State and Biting Tongues.
Almost uniquely, Crispy Ambulance has retained the same line-up since the group was originally founded in 1978: Alan
Hempsall (vocals, keyboards), Gary Madeley (drums), Robert Davenport (guitars), Keith Darbyshire (bass).
'There's a sense of feeling compelled by irresistible forces,' explains Alan Hempsall. 'Compulsion is an apt way to
describe our constant urge to go back and make music with people we've known since childhood. While the world may

Was erste Eindrücke angeht, sammelt der Opener und Titeltrack RACHANEE bereits in den ersten paar Sekunden eifrig Punkte, dank des inspirierten Einsatzes eines hypnotischen Vocalsamples. Eine Lektion in griffigem Minimalismus, ist es vor allem dieser wogende Stimmschnipsel, der den Hörer ins Geschehen zieht - gefolgt von einer stoischen, aber überraschend funkigen Bassline deren Sex-Appeal eindeutig in ihrer Einfachheit liegt. Die DNA des Tracks weist ihn als Verwandten des Outputs von Voigt & Voigt aus - insbesondere deren wendiges Debüt-Album - Die Zauberhafte Welt Der Anderen' (KOMPAKT 274 CD 104) und die Verwendung von Found Footage und Collage-Ästhetik mit attraktiven Rhythmusmustern.

Der rückseitige Klopfer TISCH FÜR ZWEI hat eine etwas andere Mentalität und zeigt offen seine schwindelerregende Vorliebe für oldschoolig schleifende Synth-Spuren - erinnernd an eiskalte Klassiker aus dem Voigtschen Katalog wie etwa How We Rock' (KOMPAKT 72) oder - Supertiel' (KOMPAKT EXTRA 2). Als aufgebockte Reminiszenz und meisterhafte Wiederaneignung dieser traditionellen Kunst der Hirnschraube funktionieren die ausscherenden Synth-Bleeps hier prächtig - sie halten die Beats am Raten und sichern das richtige Maß an Irrsinn in einem Track der exklusiv nur nach eigener Pfeife tanzt. Hier springt keiner zweimal in den gleichen Fluß.

This release blows the trio's instrumental palette wide open for a single continuous piece.
Begun as a one-off collaboration in 2009, the trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi has now become a solid working group, refining its craft through a series of annual concerts at Tokyo's legendary SuperDeluxe.  Much of their recorded work has focused on their intense, ritualistic take on the rock power trio of electric guitar, bass and drums, with last year's 'now while it's still warm let us pour in all the mystery' (BT09) containing a series of instant compositions of stunning power and concision that demonstrated how familiar and attuned to one another the three have become.

Presenting the entire first set of the trio's March 2013 concert at SuperDeluxe (the second set will follow on Black Truffle later this year), 'only   wanting to melt   beautifully away is it a lack   of contentment  that stirs affection   for those   things  said to be as of yet unseen', their fifth release,  blows the instrumental palette wide open for a single continuous piece focused on acoustic strings, synth, flute and percussion. Featuring one of Haino's most delicate and moving recorded vocal performances, the opening section of the record takes the form of a spare duet between O'Rourke's 12-string acoustic guitar and Haino's kantele (a Finnish variant of the dulcimer), behind which Ambarchi provides a hovering backdrop of wine glass tones. While on previous releases the listener has often sensed that Haino was firmly in the driver's seat, here O'Rourke takes centre stage with an acoustic guitar performance that takes the lyricism of John Abercrombie or Ralph Towner and refracts it through the free improvisation tradition of his mentors Derek Bailey and Henry Kaiser. The atmosphere of meditative, abstracted song is reminiscent of some of Haino's greatest recordings, such as the legendary 'Live In The First Year Of The Heisei' volumes recorded with Kan Mikami.

" Der sozusagen Nomade Matt Karmil produziert und ist DJ seit Jahren unter vielen Alias-Namen in verschiedenen Formen, aber hat nun den Flow und den Sound, der ihn in eine rosige Zukunft schreiten lässt. Releases auf Tim Sweeney`s Beats In Space , der a lot to share 12" (PNN06) , die geheimnisvolle HAF001 und nun sein Debüt- Album auf PNN (PNN07) werden ihr übriges tun, dass 2014 ein sehr spannendes Jahr für Matt Karmil sein wird.

Es sind weder Goethe noch Grass, die vergilbt von der brennenden Sonne auf dem Armaturenbrett nach Aufmerksamkeit dürsten. Was hätten die auch in den Bildern zu suchen, die Bela B mit Smokestack Lightnin' und Peta Devlin, Gitarrist Walter Broes und Lynda Kay in weiteren Hauptrollen, aus Klischeefallen befreien. Aber aufgepasst, Rebellen, die Ihr Euch zum Twist und Line Dance vor "Bye" versammelt habt! Sehnt Ihr Euch in Eurem selbstverliebten Antagonismus nicht nach moralischer Stütze "Bye" verteilt keine Gebote, aber wenn man unbedingt einen Ratschlag sucht, könnte man die Anleitung zum Idealismus finden - auch im Musikalischen.

Die beiden Jungs von Audision melden sich wieder zurück und ihr nächstes Release kann sich durchaus sehen (farbiges Vinyl) und hören lassen. "Chimes 1" wurde für ihr Live-Set produziert und hat somit bereits Reaktionen direkt von den Dancefloors einfangen können. Kristallklar klingen die Bells des neu im Studio integrierten Roland JD 800 und schwingen magisch im Raum. In der Vorbereitung für ihr Live-Set im letzten Jahr in Frankfurt waren noch nicht alle Maschinen auf Ursprungszustand gestellt und plötzlich meldete sich der JD 800 mit einem neuen Sound auf einer alten Soundbank. Die Maschine einfach sprechen lassen, ist ihr Motto von Beginn an und so wurde sofort die Record Taste gedrückt und es entstand "Chimes 2".

"Away" war der beatlose Track der letzten Erfolgs Single "Up & Away" (2012). Kein geringerer als Gez Varley aka G-Man machte daraus ein Tech-House Dancefloor Monster vom Herrn. Als Mitbegründer der legendären Kombo LFO (Warp Records) schrieb er zusammen mit Mark Bell Musikgeschichte. Als G-Man glänzte er als Solokünstler auf Labels wie Wir, i220, Force Inc. und nicht zuletzt Swim, auf dem er mit "Quo Vadis" die Clubs in den 90ern weltweit aufmischte.

Nicht weit entfernt saß im letzten Jahr noch Christiopher Rau. Der Tausendsassa ist in der Zwischenzeit von Hamburg nach Berlin gezogen, konnte aber vorher noch einen Remix beisteuern. Der Typisch, rohe aber immer deepe und warme House Sound aus den Kreisen der Smallville Familie, rundet die 12inch perfekt ab. Wir meinen ein Must-Have!

The time has come. The funky nerd and knob-handler Erdbeerschnitzel alias Tim Keiling is releasing his first physical album on Mirau. The young producer, who has moved from his hometown of Mittelfischbach to Bonn, tapped into the lode of versatility early on, and has been extracting one surprise after another ever since. After single-handedly releasing a first digital album that was obviously bursting with ideas ('Pathetik Party', 2009), Erdbeerschnitzel rapidly made himself a name with first-class single releases in the following years on 3rd Strike Records, 4 Lux and Mirau - a name not easily forgotten. The release of the much-celebrated single 'To an End' on Mirau made clear that this was but the beginning of a work together. In the wake of anticipation created by the digital single 'Through the Night', the album 'Tender Leaf' is now available on beautifully packed double vinyl. 'Tender Leaf' is a collection of 12 wonderful tracks, splashing at the edges with Erdbeerschnitzel's signature deep, driving vibe throughout the entire album, pulling us into a pool of swinging, iridescent oomph. Each elaborate audio-bouquet is full of spirit. Sometimes weirdly romantic and introverted, then breaking out into raucous assemblage, flaunting sonar reverb. Keiling's production makes these gems sound like an essence of all the music around us today, which calls out to us in echoing vocal traces. In 'The Mattress Excursions', guest singer 'The Drifter' steers his soulful voice through the escalating arrangement and broken beats as we remember from early Jamie Lidell tracks. Erdbeerschnitzel frequently gives things a humorous turn, flashing us winks from the midst of the fray. His characteristic beat programming, clever and exulting, makes otherwise bland patterns swing into pulsating vivacity; picking up on contemporary styles and aesthetics, he re-animates sounds within his own parameters. Therefore he decides to present his music under the same name: Dennis Busch - which we think might be his real one.

Kenny Gino and Big Mike a.k.a. the Solid Gold Playaz both started playing records in the late 70's/early 80's. Having family from Chicago, who were DJ's and down with some of the big guys at the time, "heavily influenced our music and production styles" both say. "Living so close to the city, we could go down to all the legendary night spots. The Rainbow and the Warehouse, the Box, the Shelter... places where you could just feel the vibe. And you could hear guys like Farley Funkin' Keith, Ron Hardy, and Jammin' Gerald (the Chicago DJ/producer who is Kenny's cousin) play these incredible records". They both were hooked on the house sound, and would bring it back to their home, a small city named Racine, Wisconsin, located about an hour and half north of Chicago. They continued to develop their DJ and production skills into the 90's, but musically, weren't taking things very seriously until they met Chicago producer Louis Bell. He introduced them to many of the people who were building the mid-90's Chicago sound. "Louis gave us access... access to places we hadn't been before. He took us into the offices of Cajual/Relief Records and Underground Construction, and suddenly we were face to face with guys who were doing what we wanted to do... Cajmere, Paul Johnson, Glenn Underground... showing us that we could do this too. We did a few releases just to get our name out, and soon we had some pretty big named DJ's playing our music. We had DJ's actually looking for our records, and telling us how much they liked our sounds... that just blew us away, especially with very little promotion and in the limited numbers we were pressing... our music just started to build a name for itself."

Das Album wurde in den Q7 Studios/Deutschland von Michael Zech (The Ruins Of Beverast, Ascension, Hell Militia) aufgenommen und gemischt und in den Woodshed Studios/Deutschland von V. “Trash Can Lamb” is a new solo album from Akron, OH-based multi instrumentalist Keith Freund. For the better part of twenty years, Freund has been producing intimate, shape-shifting music on his own and as part of collaborative projects such as Trouble Books, Lemon Quartet, and Aqueduct Ensemble. Here, he concocts a heady, homespun broth of analog synthesis, bit-reduced sampling, piano, standup bass, saxophone, and location recordings, arriving at a loose and evocative set of songs. Throughout the album, we hear 8-bit experimental delays mangling airy acoustic materials, denaturalizing them into primitive loop structures while retaining their golden-hued, melodic cores. The sputters, hisses, and croaks of handmade electronics nuzzle up to wistful piano and saxophone ruminations; the pure pandemonium of chaotic triangle wave patching and filtered noise settles into the serenity of a backyard dusk full of spring peepers (or maybe they’re crickets…). It’s in the space between the ragtag and rough-hewn and the romantic and yearning that Freund situates these compositions; it’s a peek inside a workshop that sits atop the trees, branches scraping on the windows, bluejays who just won’t knock it off, a table fan spinning slower and slower, its cheap blades covered in dust.
