Sandy Barber - I Think I'll Do Some Stepping (On My Own) EP

Remixes

A soul filled Disco gem from the 1978 album 'The Best Is Yet To Come', re-issued as a Deluxe album by BBE in 2012, 'I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own' is one of those tracks that combines an infectious melody with a stunning vocal performance. Therefore it takes remixers with real vision to breathe even more life into a track that is already jam packed full of it and with these two tracks both John Morales and OPOLOPO have shown their respective visions. The OPOLOPO Rework kicks off with a tough as they come bassline of fluid funk groove that underpins the aforementioned melody punctuated with percussive piano and builds up as a springboard for Sandy's amazing vocal performance. John Morales' mix emphasises the beautiful string arrangements to create the space for that voice to soar over percussion led breaks. If you think you recognise Sandra Barber's voice then you absolutely do through her vocal performances on the massive hit that was Rare Pleasure's 'let me Down Easy' from 1976 and the Deep Dish produced pair of mid-90s House hits 'Make The World Go Round' and 'Ain't No Need To Hide'. A New York City native, Sandy Barber has worked with legendary producers such as David Jordan, Deep Dish and Leroy Butler as well as being remixed by OPOLOPO, John Morales, Roger Sanchez and Al Kent.

21.06.2023

Spanish label DiscoGram hits release number 30 in fine style here, not least because it is their first ever vinyl release. The in-house production team here go big with some fiery sounds coloured by Afro, funk and soul. 'Eko' is a whirlwind of big vocals, wild synths and live sounding drums then 'Affair' goes straight for the hips with its big horn stabs and slinky drum work. On the flpside the busy cut up loops of 'Love Gayle' will get hands in the air like you just don't care and 'To Be Dancing' slips into a classic era disco groove with lush strings and more vibe-fuelled horn work. A real doozy.

PANACHE - EVERY BROTHER AIN’T A BROTHER

Originally released as a 12” single in 1982, ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ was the final record from Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist and producer Freddie Thompson’s Panaché band. Built around a fully cleared sampled bassline from ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ plays out like a summertime stroll through New York in the early 80s. The streets are full of excitement, but as the lyrics, written by vocalist Denise Williams (not to be confused with Deniece Williams of ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ fame) make it clear, they’re dangerous as well.

Thirty-nine years later, Isle of Jura is proud to present the first official 12” reissue of ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’. A cult classic from the disco-rap era, the reissue includes the original vocal and instrumental versions of ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ plus a Jura Soundsystem special version with additional live percussion.

Originally made up of Freddie, his wife, the singer Debra Thompson and keyboardist Douglas Glover, Panaché formed at the behest of a local disco DJ, Carl Nelson. In the wake of Chic’s early singles, Carl felt a French name would give Freddie a competitive edge. “He explained it to us that it was a French word for style and elegance. Panaché, a step above chic,” Freddie reflects.

Business minded, Freddie formed his own label, Roché Records and joined SIRMA - The Small Independent Music Manufacturers Association. “It was very hard for the independent manufacturers to get airplay and distribution at the time, so we all came together,” he remembers. Through SIRMA, Freddie met Joe and Sylvia Robinson from Sugar Hill Records, who several years later, let him sample ‘The Message’ for ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’.

In 1979, Panaché scored some radioplay when they covered ‘Not On The Outside’ by ‘60s D.C R&B group The Moments. Emboldened, they brought onboard backing vocalists and recorded their only album. This Is Panache saw the band blurring the boundaries between soul, jazz-funk and disco and become a sought after collectible.

By 1982, Debra had stepped back, and one of Panaché’s backing singers was center stage, Denise Williams. “Denise was good with writing poetry,” says Freddie. "She had one called ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’. It was about the unrest that was going on in the city at the time. I thought I could do something with that.”

After releasing ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ in 1982, Panaché quietly moved from center stage to behind the scenes. Over the last thirty-nine years, Freddie has continued to work in the music industry as a session musician and producer. “As soon as we stopped trying to become stars as Panaché, we became busy working in the industry,” Freddie laughs.

After a series of singles and an album (Sickla) Opolopo returns to Local Talk with a couple of tracks where he was given free choice to 'tweak' his personal favourites from the Local Talk vault.

On this vinyl release Opolopo has chosen to tweak tracks from Jamie 326 & Masalo, Soulphiction (RIP) and DirtyTwo.

As always with Opolopo the soul is ever-present but musically you'll find everything from deep house, disco, jazz-ish grooves and electronic house.
Together with Opolopo's trademark sound, additional production and arrangements these tracks are more remixes than reworks in our opinion...

Marxist Love Disco Ensemble - MLDE LP

Sounding simultaneously from the past, the present, and the future, the debut album 'MLDE' by Marxist Love Disco Ensemble seeks to eradicate both the trite from disco and the sobriety from political music. Half poetic, half tongue-in-cheek, this stunning compact eight-track album is influenced by Eastern European and Mediterranean 70s disco records. In the words of band member Paolo, ''it was written in response to hearing 'I love America' by Patrick Juvet. The song prompted the question: why does disco, a genre originally created by oppressed minorities, eventually become synonymous with American capitalist excess?" MLDE seeks to break this connection.

Merging disco, post-disco 80s pop, and boogie into the fold, 'MLDE' was recorded using only analogue instruments, giving it warmth and space. Recorded on cassette, ¼ and ½ inch tape, this gives moments of lo-fi abstraction between the beats of an aggressive, tight drum kit. Instruments used for this recording range from saxophone, trumpet, harpsichord, guitar, and rare analogue synthesisers. The bass sound is shaped by early 80s boogie records, whilst the influence of artists such as Hamlet Minassian can be heard in some of MLDE's more driving-disco outings, such as 'Hues of Red'. In the tradition of Soviet vocal group records, which the band has studied, some songs are sung by a vocal quartet in homage to this tradition.

Tracks such as '1905' and 'Brumaire' have a greater pop aesthetic, with Paolo's vocal style on these more pop-driven songs evoking early 80s bands such as Orange Juice and Chas Jankel.

The format and message of pop and disco are commonly viewed just to entertain and move bodies around a dancefloor; however, lyrically, the subjects range from dialectical and historical materialism, class struggle, Marxist theory and praxis, as well as the concept of Marxist disco music.

Adding the icing to the cake, mastering don Joker aka Liam McLean dusted the album with his magic, giving the songs space where the room is needed, as well as the kick and punch demanded by the modern dancefloor.

Yes, this is a press release, and they are always full of hype, but we were blown away when we heard this album, and we hope it enriches you too.

Various - Funk Purpose Vol. 2

Samosa Records continues it’s unstoppable runaway juggernaut of a year with the double EP 'Funk Purpose Vol. 2’.

Pulling out all the stops they have brought together a who’s who of the cream of the disco editor roll of honour. Not content with smashing Part 1 out of the park Part 2 is just as dynamic.

Hot Digits boss 'Fingerman' is first off and is in playful mode with ‘Sabu’s Theme’ another track heavy on the groove as a super funky bassline jousts with some great guitar licks. Looped up soul packed vocals soon take centre stage as the track ebbs and flows building drama as it goes. This one is peak time hold your partner tight and tell them you love them dance-floor action.

Another well regarded label boss is Alpaca Edit’s 'Pete Le Freq' who steps into action with ‘Crew Say Dah’. Funky guitars, loose ass-shakin’ percussion and strings a-plenty all lead the way as the keys create an outrageously joyful vibe.

Turning over 'Sleazy McQueen' of Whiskey Disco delivers with 'Ready For Luv' a deep disco bumpin' groover of a house track packed with energetic drums, a real bounce of a bassline and smooth pads. The looped up vocal is a real ear worm moment.

The honour of closing out this brilliant release goes to 'Swifft Edits', a Canadian who currently resides in Japan. His entry to the EP 'Funk Comes Alive' is another stand out track. Brass, power vocals and some great drum programming all come together to light up the peak time. A monster track and a perfect way to close out a wonderful 12”.

A superb double EP through-out as Samosa continue their incredible run of form in 2019. Both 12's are well worth tracking down. (Le Visiteur Online)

Sam Redmore - Universal Vibrations

LP with Digital Download Card

"Honestly, this album from Sam Redmore is having it" - Craig Charles

"Very clever. Very Nice." – Fatboy Slim

"Totally loving this. It's been on repeat since I heard it." – Nemone

"Amazing. Where can I get all your stuff?" - Jazzy Jeff

Having established himself first as a DJ and then as a remixer, Sam Redmore is now very much making himself known as an original producer of quality global grooves that can light up any dancefloor, carnival or party.

After garnering early support for his remixes from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Quantic, Nightmares On Wax, The Nextmen, Lauren Laverne, Danny Krivit and Craig Charles, Sam has built a name for crafting soul-drenched remixes of the classics, with his army of fans eagerly awaiting every new re-work.

Signing to Jalapeno Records for his debut album of original material, Sam has kept the eclectic tastes of all his fans satisfied with a series of very different singles showcasing the wide range of styles he is known for - all picking up rave reviews and a very wide spread of radio support including Radio 1 / 6 Music / Radio 2 / Jazz FM / Worldwide FM in the UK as well as hitting Number 1 most added on US college radio charts (world).

The single Nagu in particular has become a mainstay on daytime 6 Music but each successive release has been finding new fans. From his killer cumbia covers (Tears / Just Be Good To Me) through to the afro-house exuberance of One More Time and leading neatly up to Just Can't Wait, an extremely soulful disco house floorfiller, this is an album with broad appeal both in the UK and overseas.

In the meantime, Sam has been honing his live shows throughout 2022, with festival bookers keen for a piece of the action. Boomtown, Wilderness, Green Man, Kendal Calling and a whole host of others have seen what the punters at Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival saw last summer, when Sam debuted his live show on the main stage of a key festival on the Saturday afternoon. Anyone who was there and saw the audacious 12-piece live ensemble playing their first show knew they were seeing something special.
