Inventing Masks - Inventing Masks

Giuseppe Ielasi is an electro-acoustic musician based in Milan. He runs the micro label Senufo Editions. Originally released in 2013, Error Broadcast re-issued 'Stunt (Appendix)' just recently (ebc028). Here Giuseppe Ielasi delivers a highly unique take on beat music.

After a hiatus of three years Inventing Masks is a new moniker the producer uses to publish his self-titled debut LP. 'Inventing Masks' comprises six concentric but slightly out-of-balance sound sculptures, equally inspired from generative composition, ambient music, and hip hop.

29.03.2016

When Matt Karmil released Reverse Peephole in 2013 it was clear we had a startling and creative new talent in our midst. Fast forward a few years and Karmil has released on the best taste making labels in the game, with 12''s notched up for Beats in Space, Studio Barnhus and of course Idle Hands - his debut for the Bristol label, Play It / Do It / Say It, having appeared in the summer of 2015, providing leading DJs with head turning staples for their sets, blazing its three tracks across many a dancefloor. As Idle Hands enters 2016, what better way to start than with a new LP from Karmil Originally the tracks on this album were sent as a bundle to label boss Chris Farrell, who was looking to pick a track for a single release. Listening to the music as a whole, it became clear to the Idle Hands man that it needed to be released as such. This is the result: 13 tracks presented just as they were originally sent over in a zip. This is IDLE033: The sound of an accomplished dancefloor producer stretching out. These aren't straight dance tracks, neither is this a ponderous ambient LP. This is vivid, vital electronic music for modern times. Tracks to cut through the monotony of depressingly average house and techno releases. The music shimmers with warmth and humanity, a testament to Karmil's personality as well as his skill as a producer. One can sense in the tracks that this a musician who has travelled and absorbed much along the way: Long drawn out winter nights in Sweden with the Studio Barnhus crew. Years spent in Cologne with its distinguished electronic sound, a city which has given so much to the world with Kompakt and more. Last but not least you can sense Karmil's upbringing here in the UK, the roughness and rudeness all added to the mix. Idle Hands has never been a label to follow trends or to take the easy path. It has strived to keep people guessingand to remain in awe and wonder at new music being produced. InMatt Karmil it has found a producer whoembodies this notion.

15.01.2016

The moment EATBRAIN followers have been eagerly anticipating for a year has arrived, with BILLAIN landing in full force in the form of his 'Colonize' EP. A true master of Neurofunk, these 2 tracks demonstrate the full might and depth of Billain's exquisite production ability. Expanding upon the sprawling Sci-Fi landscape that has its origins in the highly acclaimed 'Colossus' EP on Bad Taste Recordings, the 'Colonize' EP takes things to an entirely new level. Incredible visual artwork from Marvel artist Enis Cisic and resident Eatbrain designer Laszlo Tringli, is threaded through with the continuation of the operatic space narrative tying the tracks together into a concept as epic as music itself.

Title track 'COLONIZE' lures listeners into Billain's otherworldly realm with 2 perfectly balanced sweeping chords, instantly transporting them to a faraway planet. Breaking the calm, an unmistakable Billain bassline erupts, before breaking down into a deliciously dynamic and scattered build-up injected with pure nervous anticipation. The Neuro assault that follows is as devastating as it is immaculately produced.

'FEED FOR SPEED' is undoubtedly one of the most high-octane tracks to land this year, finally placed into the public fresh from having unleashed pure havoc across Europe's largest DnB festivals. Representing a refined slice of turbocharged percussion, wrapped in the post-apocalyptic exhaust fumes of raging synths and an unending build-up of pure adrenaline-laced excitement. Prepare yourselves for an unforgiving assault on the senses, from a producer in the depths of carving a very unique path through the electronic landscape.

Lp with Deluxe Printed Sleeve +Mp3 Download - Latest album from Pat Murano's Decimus project - part of a series of 12 LPs dedicated to the zodiac of Decimus Magnus Ausonious - Founding member of No Neck Blues Band Tracklist LP: A Untitled - B Untited Short info: How do you deal with the world's nightmarish montage of bad news, the glut of information that triggers feelings of futility and insanity One way to cope is to plunge deeper into the madness, at least temporarily, for a dip into the healing pool of catharsis. Few people in music today provide a more immersive alternate reality on record to combat our own horrible one than Decimus (former No-Neck Blues Band guitarist/synth player Pat Murano). Musical categories dissolve in the mind as you try to ascertain what's going on in Decimus' sonic universe. As with some of the most advanced and individualistic musicians on the planet (Coil, Demdike Stare, Mnemonists, Nurse With Wound), Murano instinctively generates sounds that appear to bypass normal listening responses and flow directly to the subconscious. Deep immersion in Decimus 7 leads the listener to a disturbing, mind-altering realm. Every aspect of these two epic sidelong pieces feels as if it's controlled by a malevolent super-being hellbent on subverting conventional notions of music.

And it All Ends Here (feat. Antonello Salis) Short info: As both a producer and the helmsman of the Outis Music label, Dino Sabatini has carved out a distinctive musical style that shows a great reverence for both ancient archetypes and future possibilities for change (see, for example, his Mnemosyne' co-release with Edit Select, in which each track is dedicated to a separate Greek goddess). With one foot planted in a mysterious past and the other foot planted in a world yet to arrive, Sabatini's works are carefully realized emotional journeys that intertwine shimmers of optimism with undercurrents of poignancy or nostalgia. His latest full-length offering, Omonimo' (that's homonym' for non-speakers of Italian), brings all of this to fruition on a record that demands (and rewards) deep listening. After a pulsating Foreword' massages the mind and prepares it for the story that Sabatini is about to tell, Choosing the Right Way' blankets the listener in a rainy day ambience punctuated with tantalizingly distant vocal refrains and nimble piano. At once solemn and erotic, it sets the pace perfectly for a set of tracks that have a cohesive feel, yet all use their own sonic vocabulary and color palette to tell unique variations on the story. It's My Forest,' for example, sticks to the reliable trip-hop / mid-tempo framework while introducing quick snatches of tabla and signaling, hovering synth arpeggios. Follow Me' retains the lush synth pads and cycling percussive loops of that track, and then things take a turn for the slightly darker with The Unexpected,' a sudden uptick in percussive punch and apprehensive intensity.

From Scratch - Five Rhythm Works Cd

Beginning in 1974, based in New Zealand, the sound-performance group From Scratch used an evolving array of percussion instruments to create a distinctive rhythmic music, texturally rich and tonally sumptuous, making use of found and repurposed objects as well as custom-made percussion instruments.
And while the music has a sophisticated, fluid and intelligent polyrhythmic drive, pitched percussion features prominently, using microtunings and just intonation in tightly structured pieces which evolve and mutate, making use of intricate interlocking of melodic and rhythmic elements. Given their Pacific identity, one can find similarities with a number of Asian Pacific musics, their music will appeal to open-eared listeners interested in such musics, and it will also intrigue admirers of the early
work of Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Formed by Phil Dadson on his return to New Zealand following his late-60s involvement in the U.K.
with Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra, Auckland's From Scratch embraced an egalitarian ethic, focusing on co-operation, integration,
and the union of opposites. These principles are clearly heard in the music here, with all the players interlocking, with the music exploring and exploding the polarities of melody/rhythm, local/global, group/individual, minimal/maximal. These four tracks, ranging from 1974 to 1982 are propulsive and yet serene, percussive and yet
sweetly tonal, and toe-tappingly alert, an immersive and distinctive soundworld. All tracks here are newly remastered from the original
master tapes, "Passage" was their first recording and is previously unissued.

Inigo Kennedy - Requiem Remixed

Inigo Kennedy's Vaudeville LP was undoubtedly one of Token's highlights of 2014. Now, following hot on the heels of Antigone's twisting 'Cantor Dust' EP and Ø (Phase)'s sweltering 'Tunnel Vision/Internal Conflict' 12", 'Requiem', a standout cut from the album has been resurrected across an all-star remix EP from the label. The release sees some of the most notable figures operating in the techno scene today turn their hand to the track, from sonic explorer Efdemin to Birmingham veteran Karl O'Connor, aka Regis.

The original's twisted melodies are beautifully fragmented across Efdemin's opening offering. The Berlin based artist drops the mesmeric riff down a few semitones, unleashing them alongside nitro-charged rhythms. Dial-tone bleeps and razor sharp hats are set in contrast to the original's sleek, melancholic synthesiser-play, vaulting forward swelteringly intense.

As the EP progresses the interpretations seem to get progressively more bent out of shape. Raster Noton mainstay Kangding Ray for example provides a skittering, paranoid recast of the track. Groaning, ethereal soundscapes hover imposingly above thudding, broken-beat rhythms and jagged hi-end drones. Regis on the other hand harnesses the original's bulging low-end, putting his characteristically rugged stamp on the track. Whilst an ominous low-end throbs in the blackness, vapourous atmospherics are put into full-effect alongside a warped riff, steadily decaying as the track progresses.

Closing the release, Dasha Rush pushes the original as far as it can possible go, bringing discordant piano melodies and distant voices together in a thoroughly disorienting reinterpretation. The Russian born artist is patient in her building of the track, it is not until past the two minute mark that she lets booming kicks and stuttered hi-hats fire.

The artists selected for the project have been curated with much care - pushing 'Requiem' to its outer limits and re-imagining the track in ways difficult to conceive of before. However given Token's history of bringing to light the most diverse corners of dancefloor music, maybe nothing less should have been expected.

Misanthrop - Collapse Ep

Collapse Ep

2x12inchRAMM198
Ram Records
26.10.2015

Misanthrop isn't just about the music; twelve years the producer has spent on the audio and video components of his artistic vision. Taking inspiration from the world's murkiest corners (which translates through a conundrum of rolling, methodical progression and unapologetic beat patterns) the Hamburg based producer has become infamous.

Combining every aspect of his wide ranging digital skills, his latest 'Collapse EP', due to be released on internationally renowned Ram Records, presents you with a multi-platform shock to the senses.

'Collapse' begins on a note that's carried throughout the entire EP. Nastily slick, propelled forward on distorted bass and sliced up metallic hi-hats, it's diced up by imposing sample snippets; a hulking stack of technicality. A full-frontal opener, don't expect the following three tracks not to follow its precedent.

Up next is 'Fragment', a precarious, angry yet convoluted track that proves Misanthrop's refusal to take a conventional approach. Filtering through and following the ambush dynamic, stocky reverb pulls you down a shoot of clanking, industrial production that only momentarily allows you to fully absorb its driving force.

'Rotor' and 'Attack' roll out in quick procession, each providing an even deeper exploration into Misanthrop's vast production repertoire. Whilst 'Rotor', having lined sets over the past twelve months, spins underneath layers of snapping percussion, pulsating subs and blaring kick drum, 'Attack' takes a different approach. In your face, obtrusive yet able to lead you onto any dancefloor, it flicks through a higher frequency whilst being underpinned by pumping drum patterns and eventually flipped with a subliminal vocal snippet.

So, making a guest appearance on the Ram imprint, it's time to immerse yourself in the darkly stooped world of Misanthrop. And if there's one record to get you ready for a weekend of drum & bass, this is certainly it.

Paul Woolford - Orbit / Mdma

Following 2013's ubiquitous smash 'Untitled' and last year's heavyweight 'Erotic Discourse' remixes, Paul Woolford returns to the Hotflush fold with a double-headed cerberus, 'Orbit / MDMA'.

Flexing signature versatility, Woolford goes from heads-down to hands-in-the-air in the flip of a record: a dance floor locked in to the twisted sirens of acid rave (Orbit) experiences a sudden belly rush as it collectively comes up to piano breakdowns and female chant (MDMA). Towering and physical, the record epitomises Paul Woolford's enduring popularity.

Stabat Stable - Ultrissima On The Junk's Moon

Incredible, idiosyncratic and obscure early 80s French futurist DIY project led by Jean-Luc Aime.
This feature-length album of elusive recordings marks the bone fide axis point where Zeuhl-Skool meets synth pop, dark ambient and early electro culled from rare vinyl and disparate cassette co-op releases for this first ever LP release.

A lost art-ifact from a micro genre where ZED, Eskaton and Heldon share outernational tape space with Vox Populi! The Normal, Colin Potter and Luc Marianni this record occupies a unique place on the shelves of fans of early DIY electro and post punk while ticking the boxes of 80s VHS OST enthusiasts and the growing interest in European cassette zine projects. These melodic macabre tape experiments fuse multi-track cassette experiments with home-made special effects at the hand of an accomplished multi-instrumentalist working on the outer reaches of disenfranchised progressive-pop and reluctant techno defining then deconstructing genres that have yet to exist. Fuelled by futurist gothic imagery and operating on a parallel plain to his European and American contemporaries there are few artists like Stabat Stable and virtually none more enigmatic. This benchmark record is the first signpost to a darker part of your musical want-list as the invisible glue for fans of the aforementioned anti-genres. File under Not Yet'.

18.01.2016

A year in the making, Lionheart is the fearless new record from Crazylegs' smiling assassin Ziro - the first artist to release on our label way back in 2012, a meticulous producer revered among his peers, now confidently pushing forward with a sound like nobody else. Pooling an array of influences ranging from early days selling drum & bass in a record store in his hometown, formative production forays into dubstep and finding his groove in techno, a growing interest in rap and grime have pulled his beatmaking into an alien place in the last couple of years. Coupled with a longstanding knack for intense atmospherics and ice-cold synth lines, you end up with perhaps the most striking record we've ever put out. This is where Ziro embodies the essence of Crazylegs - a drive to experiment and an ambition to deliver the unexpected. Title track Lionheart sets out the mission statement in no uncertain terms - a breathless six and a half minutes of thunderous, fractured drums and shimmering trance riffs. Strafe brings Belfast madman Bloom into the fray, trademark hydraulic percussion creating a wonderful hybrid. London City Warlord Riko Dan spits a bag of violence on Dun Talk, a move into more straightforward rap beat territory. Distance provides a moment of blissful calm before Rapture closes the record with its grimiest workout. Lionheart is the sound of an incredibly talented producer marking out his territory - cinematic but still primed to pummel dancefloors. It arrives October 30th on digital and a 12' picture sleeve vinyl edition shortly after.

It's been two years since Tagwell Woods first appeared on W.T. Records. His rich and refreshingly unique techno style caught the ears of the faithful. Finally, finally, the Londoner is back on vinyl with six pieces of his original brand of machine music. And the wait is worth it. Tracks like "Christmas" and "Training" pulsate with feeling. Others like "Rabbit Society" and "Chance" build on that emotion. Crisp percussion and heartening strings are weaved as lush moments and textures unfurl. The 12" is incredibly deep and flooded with sentiment. But don't be mistaken into thinking Tagwell Woods deals in weight, instead it's his lightness of touch that sings. "Tied Waves" is fragile and delicate, whispering before blossoming into being. The finale, the beautifully uplifting "Velocity", has that same deftness. Mecca defies classification. Electronica. Techno. House. Acid. All are lovingly melted together to produce an absorbing and soulful second release, a release which is testament to the talent of this fledgling musician. 01.06.2015

Sand / Layna is the first full-length solo release by Canadian sound artist crys cole. While cole is known to many through her collaborative work with a host of Canadian artists and internationals such as Oren Ambarchi, Keith Rowe and James Rushford, this LP presents the first opportunity for an extended appreciation of her singular approach to amplified sound. Using contact and other microphones to amplify her interactions with small objects and the surfaces on which they rest, cole's work exists in a lineage of heavily amplified 'small sound' that stretches back to Cage's Cartridge Music. cole's approach to these materials and techniques is distinguished by its single-mindedness: rather than simply searching for interesting or attractive sounds, her performances attempt to illuminate the sonic properties of the specific objects and amplification devices she uses. Devoid of looping and complex processing, the sonic outcome of her work always retains an audible link to the handling of microphones and what they amplify. The awkward and sometimes even 'ugly' sounds of manipulated microphones and recording equipment thus sit comfortably alongside the mysterious crackle of amplified salt and the deep, musical resonance of a rubbed tabletop.

Ketev - Traces Of Weakness

Traces Of Weakness

Where To Now?
13.01.2016

KETEV is the realm in which Berlin based sound artist Yair Elazar Glotman employs his unique ambient technoid soundscapes to explore the balance between darkness and light, fragility and strength, and tension and release. 'Traces of Weakness' follows up the solo contrabass LP 'Études' for Subtext records, and continues to expand on the themes explored on previous KETEV albums for Where To Now and Opal Tapes. 'Traces of Weakness' was recorded at EMS Stockholm using their Buchla Modular Synth, and processed with reel-to-reel tape manipulations including personal archived field recordings. The sleeve photography comes courtesy of Yair's father, the artist Yehoshua Shuka Glotman.

The album is divided into four long expressions, moving through a cycle of melancholy, destruction, urgency, fragility, and total calm. 'Traces of Weakness' opens with 'Probabilities of a stranger's eyes', hypnotising the listener into a state of mantra, where cyclical bass plumes slowly strut alongside what sounds like processed healing bowls and subtle modular tones. Closing on a segment of total reflective calm this opening gambit truly does set itself up as preparation for the descent.

The brooding ambience continues with the title track 'Traces of Weakness', opening with a Stars of The Lid esque panorama of ambience and beauty, throughout the piece the vibe becomes increasingly ominous and foreboding, feelings of fragility and space slowly evolve into a filmic atmosphere of oddly comforting tension and uncertainty - it is this changing of emotional states within sound where KETEV totally comes into his own - sharing similar motifs as artists such as Tim Hecker and Tomas Koner, but continuously injecting an array of very human and emotional responses into his scapes of evolving ambience.

'Linger' finds KETEV in full on rhythmic dread mode, where 12 minutes of churning techno mechanism forces the build of tonal dread into a new zone. 'Linger' showcases what KETEV does best - taking the stripped back, minimal pulse and building layer upon layer of sound and tension to create an ecstatic, all encompassing melee of rapture and release.

We end with 'Levels of Chaos' to complete the cycle, a true comedown from the heightened spirit of 'Linger'. Themes explored in the opening track return, but with new perspective and confidence, the scene has a newness to it but is totally destroyed, there is melodic hope that pierces the ambience, bringing to mind the darker moments of John Hassell's otherworldly compositions. KETEV often leaves the listener with a brutal and cold parting stare, and 'Traces of Weakness' is no different, another enthralling and escapist experience and essential addition to the Where To Now catalogue.

Christoph De Babalon / Triames - Invocation Of The Demon Twin Vol. 1

You wake from sleep, the door closes by itself and the walls run with slime and rain. A shadow moves, almost familiar, welcoming and simultaniously intimidating. The candle flickers and snuffs out. A noise. Your torch is dying. Something takes your hand. Long fingernails and old skin. You mark the floor, chant the incantation. Together. In the first of our split series we present two modern artists who's imaginations know no limit. Abstract drones, anchient machinery, neon cities within the shadow of the overfiend. Heading up Side A is the legendary Cristoph De Babalon, whose work in the late 90s on Digital Hardcore and his own CFET proved to be some of the most unique and timeless of the period. Seperated by European boarders, the reigns are taken by Triames, cutting the rhythms to explore techno as a more abstract concept, beautifully detailed work in between Lustmord and Emptyset. Giallo Disco is proud to present 'Invocation Of The Demon Twin Vol. 1' possibly the most sinister and atmospheric release to date, and also one of our most special. Art by Eric Lee.

Deantoni Parks - Technoself

From Leaving Records, the debut album from drummer Deantoni Parks - John Cale, Sade, The Mars Volta, Flying Lotus collaborator.

The relationship between music and technology is always evolving ... but true music can not exist without a soul. Some extraordinary musicians augment their natural talents with technology, adopting its benefits to fuel their own singular vision, and that is the basis of Deantoni Parks' debut album Technoself.

Parks is one of the finest drummers working today, displaying a sleek and intuitive balance between raw rhythmic physicality and machine-like precision. He can play on one hand what many great drummers could not achieve with two - which he does frequently. His skills have seen him perform with artists such as John Cale, Sade, The Mars Volta, Flying Lotus and his own boundary-pushing group KUDU, among others. Notable collaborations aside, Parks is an artist in his own right, constantly in motion and expanding towards something new.

On Technoself, you hear Parks totally in control. Three of the tracks were recorded live in a session at Dub Lab, the others in a studio. In his own words, "The sound result of Technoself is a digestion of sounds being refined, filtered, and re-arranged in the time period of the average thought." There are no overdubs or loops on this record. The sound is that of "segmented, split-second curated soundscapes atop a highway of refined, war-drum rhythms." The album plays out like a percussive crash course winding through Parks' diverse influences and moods, where the only constant is Deantoni's unmistakable sense of movement. In this case, the most important piece of technology turns out to be the human body.

Max Loderbauer & Jacek Sienkiewicz - Ridges

Valleys, ravines, crags, inaccessible mountain peaks, abyss. Since times immemorial, stark mountain landscape has always been humankind's inspiration and a constant reference point for many generations of exploratory artists. 'Ridges' is a result of a creative encounter between veteran of improvised avant-electronics Max Loderbauer (among others, co-creator of Sun Electric, member of Moritz von Oswald Trio, and frequent collaborator of Ricardo Villalobos) and spiritus movens of Warsaw-based label Recognition Jacek Sienkiewicz. Meeting takes place not only on the level of investigating pure sound and building complex structures, but also on the level of fascination with mountainside aura and mystique that is common to both artists: Alps (Loderbauer) and Tatra (Sienkiewicz), as well as with the vocal cultures of communities inhabiting theese areas. Deeply introspective and individualistic confrontation between two peer sensibilities and imaginative worlds gave birth to two separate compositions in the vein of contemplative electronic music at it purest. Both timeless and futuristic, soundscapes imagined by Loderbauer and Sienkiewicz could serve as a perfect antidote to turbo-speed contemporaneity with its tweets, social networks, neuroses and unavoidable anxieties. This music is created without paying attention to current trends and tendencies, although it simultaneously takes its due place among the works of noble pioneers, from Popol Vuh's Transilvanian hymns in Herzog's 'Nosferatu' and Lionel Marchetti's concrete report from the glacier, to Simon Fisher Turner's Himalayan soundtracks. More than 20 minutes of material contained in 'Ridges' is a document of research passions of both musicians, while for the listeners it could serve as an invitation for imaginative sound journeys, but also for a bit of research that could - and should! - be undertaken on one's own.

With a quiet intensity over the last 12 years, Strategy has proven himself to be an incredibly resourceful and rewarding musician in both group settings and as a solo artist. In the latter guise, this Portland producer/multi-instrumentalist (aka Paul Dickow) has released a prolific amount of excellent work for quality indie labels such as Kranky, Idle Hands, 100% Silk, Endless Flight, and Entr'acte, putting a cerebral yet sensual spin on dub, ambient, post rock, and house music. For his Further Records debut, Noise Tape Self, Strategy delves ever deeper into his more ambient inclinations and experiments with tape loops. Most of the six tracks bear titles more suited for a library record, but Noise Tape Self lacks library music's faceless functionality; rather, it's an immersive soundtrack to stimulating one's imagination or losing one's bearings. Dickow says he became obsessed with making tape music in 2008, after tiring of using the computer as his main instrument. Fellow Portland producer/ingenious gear-tinkerer David Chandler (Solenoid) taught Dickow 'how to make a tape loop that could be put inside a cassette tape. I got really into this, and got a 4 track, knowing this would allow me to have four synchronized loops per tape. I would then run each channel through a series of effects and 'perform' live mixes using the loops. I alternated between using source material of my own devising and using whatever source material happened to be on the cassettes I was hacking.

delivered purely on 12' vinyl.
The lush atmospherics of opener 'Mantra' suspend
the listener in deep stasis, as slowly moving
textures, strings and low end propel the track.
'Show Me' picks up the pace, with an unnerving
vocal directing techno-influenced chord stabs,
echoing percussion and an arpeggiated synth line
that extends and expands itself into the forefront
across the latter half.
'Soundman V.I.P' brings earth-shattering sub weight

'Asteroids', the title track from the label's first

Whomadewho - Ember Mini Lp

Greetings, earthlings: we come from the land of endless summers and spontaneous jam sessions to deliver Get Physical number 300. It's brought to you by the trio from Copenhagen known as WhoMadeWho, a genre-bending group of buddies who are no strangers to critically-acclaimed albums: from their first-ever eponymous album back in 2005, to 2012's chart-topping 'Brighter' LP, all the way to last year's 'Dreams' LP, which was in fact, touted by many as one of the best things to come from the indie-dance sector of music in some time. This comes as no surprise coming from a band that's played and toured alongside the likes of Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and Hot Chip, who even asked to remix the trio's song 'TV Friend' while they in return covered 'Don't Dance'. Other remixers include underground heavy-hitters The Mole, DJ Koze and Michael Mayer, proving WhoMadeWho's ability to go from mega-stage to basement seamlessly. For the 'Ember' EP, their latest foray into the world of machine music and dreamy soundscapes, the band has stayed true to their pop tendencies while spinning things around and taking a trip right back to their roots. Band member Tomas Barfod - who also produced the release - mentions: 'After many years of emphasizing 'the song' more and more, we felt like just playing around with our instruments, like when we recorded our first album (...) it was like renewing our band-wedding vows; we found our way back to our fun and free approach of making music together". 'Fun' and 'free' might very well be two of the best ways to describe this seven-track creation that skews as much pop as it does surf-rock and slow, meaningful dance music.

On their fourth album BGM (1981), YMO continued where they left off with X8 Multiplies, by venturing further into synthesizers, drum computers and experimentation with rhythm, sequences and speeds.

This album is more focused on atmosphere and mood, some even say this album is a turning point for YMO and the international Pop music scene. They successfully merged lyrics, sound bites and their signature electrically programmed music on BGM.

'1000 Knives' and 'Cue' are the most famous; 'The Hand Clap' on '1000 Knives' is probably one of the most used samples in the '80s, early '90s.

Etch - Technicolor Daydream

The ability of the young producer from Brighton Zak Brashill to absorb and deconstruct the history of British dance music of the last 20 years never ceases to amaze us. "Synapse", included in DEU' (Lapsus, 2014), already demonstrates his skills with the tremendous ease at which he revitalised the old ways of Jungle and Drum & Bass cult classics such as Metalheadz, No U-Turn or Moving Shadow. However, nobody could have predicted what was to come. "Technicolor Daydream" is the most complete and complex work to date by Etch. An EP of five incredible songs packed with breaks, alien melodies, fat heavy bass lines and colorful acid sequences. These are remarkably mature productions overflowing with personality.

Jilk - In Need Of Tess

Jilk release their new EP 'In Need of Tess' - A wonderful collection of tracks that build on the established epic soundscapes of past releases but also demonstrate the organic development of combining experimental ambient pallets with more traditional orchestral scores and delicate pop sensibilities.

Following their successful collaboration with Haiku Salut on the emotionally charged 'Periscopes', Jilk return with warped vocals, soaring strings and a techno core tying the spiralling dense walls of ambience together.

The lead single, 'In Need of Tess' is a collaborative piece, a pulsating slice of chamber pop about dead dogs and dreams which also draws on the considerable talents of video director Nic Kane, the sculptures of Hester Sorel Moriarty Thompson.

The rest of the EP comprises of a two-part piece developed from a soundtrack Jilk produced for a lovely short film by Nim Jethwa. Building, developing and fleshing out the ideas, Jilk combine the sweeping beauty of orchestral timbre with driving 4/4 pulse and rusty sounding guitars for Nim and Nim (Sit Down Outro).

Baby Hannah is an epic piece of post rock inflected electronica making full use of the bands wide range of players. Vibraphone, violins and guitars cling to foundation drum patterns as the piece moves from ambient drone through to a rain storm of melodic percussion that even Steve Reich would approve of.

Be Heart: A short but emotionally charged clattering lo-fi electro love song built from home found sounds and frazzled broken synths. The most aching club romance to take place in a child's toy box.

Then a collaboration with the incredible Nuala Honan as Jilk rework her stand out track 'All is Not Lost', (taken from her 2014 album The Tortoise). Jilk mould the song into a hazy blanket of clicks, whirs, strings and heart wrenching vocals from snippets.

Echoes Of The Dreamtime follows on from the critically acclaimed success of The Herethereafter (Virgin Records, 2001) and Light Of X (Nettwerk Records, 2009), which KCRW and the BBC supported, along with two tours of the UK. New single 7th Ray is tipped for the same heights as The Long Goodbye which reached the Top 5 in Japan in 2001.

Echoes Of The Dreamtime is produced by Rick Parker, best known for his work with the Dandy Warhols (including Bohemian Like Me) and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Miranda is an American singer-songwriter from San Francisco. She is the daughter of Ted and Teresa Richards, stars of the underground comics revolution and the goddaughter of legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb, who is considered by many to be the single best cartoonist America has ever produced (Observer Oct 2015) and whose works include Fritz the Cat, the Keep On Truckin guy and Mr Natural.

Miranda's film credits include appearing in the Ondi Timoner film DIG! (2004), writing the song Beautiful Day for the indie film and soundtrack to Adam (2009). Mortem & Harland - Proximity / The Same

We are proud to present to you our next dnb-themed vinyl release, which comes with two absolutely fantastic deep-bassed and crisp-beated rollers. In the case of this record, we can speak of a small Polish invasion, as both tracks have been written and produced by two Polish supertalents - Mortem, who has been making big waves in the dnb industry for some time already, and Harland - an established Warsaw-based event promoter and DJ, and a now-upcoming producer, teaming up with Mortem on the flipside. Starting off with Mortem's 'Proximity', you'll surely appreciate his trademark to-the-point drumwork and clear basslines, adorned with intriguing vocal inserts and growling synths. 'The Same', with its quick-paced hi-hats, riveting synthetic melody, and spacious bassline, is surely more dancefloor-oriented, but still fits the deeper side of dnb perfectly, making this record as a whole a very welcome addition to the Absys family.

Hyperdub
17.11.2015

Okzharp (pronounced 'oh-kay-zarp') is a project that pivots around South African born London producer Gervase Gordon, who still maintains strong links to Capetown and Johannesburg and the creative work coming from there. 'Dumela 113' - translated as 'Hello 113' - is a suite of house mutations that feature the vocals of Manthe Ribane, an artist who runs the creative studio in Capetown called Studio113 with her two siblings, while her own work spans dance (she toured as a dancer with 'Die Antwoord'), modelling, styling, film and photography. 'Dumela 113' started to take form when the South African director and photographer Chris Saunders introduced Manthe to Gervase. Chris and Gervase had started making a film together, called 'Ghost Diamond', which Manthe styled, choreographed, and starred, in. Consequently two tracks on this EP, 'Fede' and 'Sizzr', are also from the film's soundtrack. 'Dear Ribane's lyrics are sung in the language of Tshwana and are about being a performer and working on shoots, and the complexities of understanding different kinds of beauty and being a vessel for other people's ideas of beauty, mocking a row of models with the line ''Ostrich 1, Ostrich 2, Ostrich 3, 4, 5, 6, 7', The lyrics open out slowly over a sharp kick drum as a minimal keyboard creeps around Manthe's poised vocals. 'Sizzr', delivered in English, is a positive mission statement about living in the moment, standing up for what you believe and not letting bad vibes get to you, sung with vocoder over bittersweet but positive keys, flipping from beatless to heads-down house. Inspired by a childhood game, 'Fede's lyrics play with the question 'How are you' and all the different ways this can be interpreted, Manthe's voice glistening with android fx over driving toms and deep bass. The EP finishes with 'Glonet', an instrumental of dubstep-indebted house with a wistful oriental melody that shifts gears between half and double speed.

12.10.2015

Just recently the The 23s, a mysterious one-man-show from the German Nord-Rhine-Westphalia area, launched the second chapter of his career and released 'Flamingo' - another longplayer full of romantic smooth operators. It can be heard as a love-letter to the movie scores of the French 70ees cinema or the impressionistic sound arrangements in early Peter Greenaway movies. You find the head of a double bass in it, discreet piano melodies thrill your senses and gentle horns and beats recollect the warm jazz influenced soul of oldschool hip-hop. Now four globally famed producers laid hand on his sublime get-down-deep instrumental journey and remixed two of his arrangements.
Canadian disco-techno-blender The Mole transforms 'Any Second' into a slow banging sort of trip hop experience, in which you can get lost in a deep echoed background atmosphere.
The now defunct German experimental electronic trio to rococo rot, long-term friends of nebulous The 23s, reworked 'The scene where the car was blown away' and twisted it into a futuristic Balearic trip where Guitars slide cool and rhythms roll unfolded.
Also Gilles Alken aka Edward, man behind the acclaimed White label from Berlin and renowned Giegling artist, fell in love with 'The scene where the car was blown away'. His version is a rattling one with a prominent magic double bass and an average psychedelic atmosphere that absorbs listeners profoundly.
The fourth remixer comes from Cologne. His name is Christian S, he loves twisted grooves and he is deeply in touch with the Cómeme tribe. His choice was also 'Any Second'. In comparison to the one by The Mole his version is racy. Hi-Hats and percussive rhythms provoke movements instantly, while bewitching chords pitch the emotions high. Four remixes by four musically different grounded producers, that all have one in common: the playfulness of the pattern-based The 23s hallucinatory sound world.

* Following from his highly acclaimed debut album 'Life Cycle', Keeno puts forward his latest cinematic masterpiece on Med School with the 'Preludes' EP. A stunning reminder of Keeno's ability to infuse classically trained skill with modern day production, resulting in a four-track collection of uncompromised elegance - a must-have.
* Fulfilling Keeno's reputation for soothing the soul of drum and bass, the up-tempo drums and hypnotic, male-led vocal of 'One More Moment' provides four minutes of effortless listening. 'Origin' delivers a delicate balance of prominent piano chords and enrapturing bass lines, whilst like a wave of silver shadow 'The Moon Under the Water' provides the epitome of refined, liquid luxury.

* Alongside fellow Med School classmate Whiney, Keeno has created a truly piece of music to round of the EP. 'Dignity Found' possesses a gentle intermittence of percussions, high-pitched string sections and expert intertwining of blissful melodies before dropping into a call and response of anthemic vocal echoes and euphoric, electric guitar.

* Since hitting Med School's radar in 2013 and the release of his stunning debut album, 'Life Cycle', there's been no shortage of support for young Will Keen, already with three well-deserved award nominations, most notably 'Best Album' at the 2013 Drum & Bass Arena Awards.

* With all four tracks fitting together like a perfectly completed puzzle, this EP is sure to draw in a new surge of devoted listeners, all the while ensuring guaranteed satisfaction for any preceding Keeno fan. As the title suggests, the 'Preludes' EP gives an apt introduction of what's to come in 2015; clearly the future is very bright for this young Med School talent.

Mikal - Wilderness

Mikal

Wilderness

CDMETACD007
Metalheadz
07.02.2016

* Mikal is a producer who has made a name for himself by making stand out drum & bass tracks that have caught the attention of DJs and listeners alike, he has released on a multitude of labels but it is Metalheadz that are releasing his debut album.

* The album is called 'Wilderness' and it was very much worth the wait. A no nonsense statement of intent from the Bristol based produced who has been quietly working away in his studio and is now ready to show the world his work, collaborations on the album come from Chimpo, Xtrah, Break, RIOT and Sophie Barker.

* The sound of the album is streamlined with a focus on low end sonic frequencies. It takes the fundamentals of jungle but none of the clichés, the execution is firmly rooted in 2016.
* We'll leave Goldie to have the last say on Wilderness:
* "Mikal is the silent assassin of the Headz camp and when i signed him i knew the potential he had in him- this album is the full realisation of that potential. He's worked very hard at perfecting his craft and i'm very happy to hear it. His inversion of DnB culture has always excited me, the dub element is something that resonates with me as a missing part to the puzzle in the Headz camp"

Nymfo & Btk - Don't Stop / Top Secret / Ship Wrecked

* Lining up a label debut with Dutch DJ and producer Nymfo, for HWARE037. The release holds in store three huge tracks from the multi- award winning musician. Nymfo's career highlights have been many and varied, with worldwide successes on Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz and Critical Modulations, nights in his native Netherlands, and support from the likes of Goldie, Friction, Fabio, Hype and many, many more.
Now is the time for HWARE037, as Nymfo continues to develop his sound, finding new avenues for expression and new ways of delivering his trademark techno-edged drum & bass.

* On Don't Stop Nymfo teams up with label stalwart BTK to deliver the storming opener. Tribal percussion soon gives way to nagging, invasive beats. The hypnotic vocal phrase acts as counterpoint, but the real emphasis is on the drums, and then, after the drop, the bass. Things get modulated by pauses and mini-breaks, but the mood remains throughout. Real quality, real underground, and real Hardware.

* Top Secret follows next, with blasting, low-slung beats leading to an electronic lift. The levels are instantly ramped up, with Nymfo unleashing the main drum set. You know instantly that this one
will drop anywhere it's played, so prepare to hear this one wall-to-wall. Growling, upsetting bass is entered next, with the whole effect being one of pure grittiness and grime. Nymfo knows how to rock a party, and does so on Top Secret.

* Rounding things out is Ship Wreck. Here, sparkling electronics take over the main melody to start, before the real action takes place. And by real action, we mean one of the heaviest basslines to see the light of day this year. With only room for a percussive beat and some well-placed samples, the Dutch

Delsin Records
21.12.2015

Delsin present a new EP by B12 aka Steve Rutter entitled Orbiting Souls, a name which comes from the fact the veteran artist has recently spent contemplating the loss of a friend and believes we are surrounded by lost souls and spirits. This is B12's second EP this year following on from the Bokide 325 release on Soma Records and comes years after still acclaimed album like Electro-Soma and TimeTourist on Warp Records back in the 90s. Orbiting Souls is a somewhat complex journey, a representation of inner Bi Polar opposites; isolation; sadness, but also acknowledging the great and wonderful things around that swirl and support and energise us. A perfectly formed sound world that is both absorbing and cerebral and comes with a full colour sleeve by Boris Tellegen.

Charlemagne Palestine + Rhys Chatham - Youuu + Mee = Weee (first)

This is the first recorded collaboration between Charlemagne Palestine and Rhys Chatham. And it's precious. After the musical meeting with  Tony Conrad (SR204), and with Z'ev (SR340), this new Sub Rosa sessions creates a form of trilogy. Rhys Chatham
Rhys Chatham began his musical career as a piano tuner for avant-garde pioneer La Monte Young as well as harpsichord tuner for Gustav Leonhardt, Rosalyn Tureck and Glenn Gould. He soon studied under electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick and minimalist icon La Monte Young and was a member of Young's group, The Theater of Eternal Music, during the early seventies; Chatham also played with Tony Conrad in an early version of Conrad's group, The Dream Syndicate. In 1971, while still in his teens, Chatham became the first music director at the experimental art space The Kitchen in lower Manhattan. His early works, such as Two Gongs (1971) owed a significant debt to Young and other minimalists. His concert productions included experimenters Maryanne Amacher, Robert Ashley, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, and early alternative rockers such as Fred Frith, Robert Fripp, Arto Lindsay, and John Lurie. He has worked closely with visual artist/musician Robert Longo, particularly in the 1980s, and on an experimental opera called XS: The Opera Opus (1984-6) with the visual artist Joseph Nechvatal. By 1977, Chatham's music was heavily influenced by punk rock, having seen an early Ramones concert. He was particularly intrigued by and influential upon the group of artists music critics would label No Wave in 1978. Members of the New York City noise rock band Band of Susans began their careers in Chatham's ensembles; they later performed a cover of Chatham's "Guitar Trio" on their 1991 album, The Word And The Flesh. (This parallels the way that members of fellow NYC noise rockers Sonic Youth began their careers in Branca's ensembles; Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth did play with Chatham as well.) Chatham began playing trumpet in 1983, and his more recent works explore improvisatory trumpet solos; these are performed by Chatham himself, employing much of the same amplification and effects that he acquired with the guitar, over synthesized dance rhythms by the composer Martin Wheeler.

23.02.2015

Great dance music albums - albums that sound as good on headphones and home speakers as they do on club sound-systems - aren't easily made. In a form whose primary aims have been to move dance-floors and to move on, full lengths that thrill the head, heart and the feet with equal power are few and far between. We believe Romare has made one. With the gripping shock of the new that announces the best records of the genre - from Entroducing through Blue Lines to Ambient Classics - Romare has both a singular style, and great deal to say with it. 'Projections" comes off like Voodoo Ray reworked by DJ Shadow.

The songs on "Projections" are an homage to elements of American/African culture in the USA - which Romare studied academically. Taking his name from Romare Bearden, the well-known cut'n'paste artist / collagist, and applying similar techniques to music. Romare re-imagines the profound cultural impact of the collage technique for a new generation of music listeners. With his signing to Ninja Tune, coming hot on the heels of his excellent 12's on underground institution Black Acre, and compilation inclusions by Tiga, Bonobo and Brownswood, the stage is set for his debut album

Steve Cobby & Trudie Dawn Smith - *1* We Start Over

vinyl 2[8,61 €]

'We Start Over' arrived on the desks at International Feel and it felt perfect for us. Deep electronics, a lovely mood, forward thinking and a gorgeous vocal from Trudie Dawn Smith. Lots to play with from a remix perspective and a great original track in itself. Steve Cobby is a British producer, musician, composer, and DJ, based in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He co-founded Fila Brazillia in 1990 and released 10 critically acclaimed LP's and produced over 70 remixes for artists as diverse as Radiohead, Busta Rhymes, Black Uhuru and A Certain Ratio. Cobby now releases music via his own label Déclassé label. His latest and third solo LP 'Saudade' was released in March 2014 and received considerable critical acclaim.

The first 12" consists of the original version and on the flip a remix by Apiento & Lx (their first track together since the underground classic 'The Orange Place' ). The remix is slow trance in its purest sense, made for lasers and dark nightclubs. It's already receiving club play and has been named by Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston's ALFOS as "one of the records of the summer". High praise.

On the second 12" the reins have been handed to Gerd Janson & Phillip Lauer a.k.a Tuff City Kids - two people making some of the finest house at their at the moment with Janson also getting massively known globally for his DJing. Their remixes are made for the clubs. The 'Garage Dub' is classic New York house that is as deep as you like and one of those hooky ones that does everything perfectly. The other, 'Private Acid Mix ' goes heavy on the beats and drops the 303 in a fine style with the vocal looped and twisted.

As you would expect from International Feel this is classy and classic club music covered from all angles from a balearic original, a deep chug remix from Apiento & Lx and the Tuff City Kids bringing the house vibe. Deep deep deep.

Finis Africae - A Last Discovery: The Essential Collection, 1984-2001

Finis Africæ. Words redolent of mystery and myth, of Europe looking out to new lands, new worlds, new times. And so it is with "A Last Discovery", the work of Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel and his musical co-adventurers, recorded between 1984 and 2001.
After fifteen years of musical success in Spain with his band Nuestro Pequeño Mundo, Arteche was ready to experiment with new ideas, and with the purchase of a four-track reel-to-reel recorder he did so, exploring imaginary global music-worlds with a core of like-minded explorers. The group, dubbed "Finis Africæ" by JAA after reading Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose", where the term refers to forbidden books and hidden knowledge, released seven recordings over an eighteen-year period, the best of which are compiled here.

Finis Africae was part of the "new wave" of Spanish music which gradually emerged after the end of the Francoist regime. Using
modern electric instruments and traditional acoustic instruments from many cultures blended together via studio alchemy, a magic which grew even stronger with the acquisition of a sixteen-track recorder after their second release, Finis Africæ created an outward-looking musical multiverse, an unclassifiable amalgam encompassing elements of folk traditions from all over the world,
skillfully and lovingly shaped into an inclusive pan-global whole. Deeply influenced by African music, the group's reverberant, organic minimal funk will appeal to DJs as well as all who yearn for the loving warmth that comes with the embrace of global possibilities.

With liner notes in Spanish, English and Japanese by JAA, "A
Last Discovery" is available on CD and double vinyl (with two bonus tracks). This is the first release by Finis Africae outside of their native Spain. Come take a retrospective journey of discovery. New worlds await.

Fixate - Throwback Therapy Ep

One listen to this EP in its entirety and it becomes very clear that Fixate was always destined to become an Exit artist. His sound is
versatile and yet carries a present theme, much like Exit's catalogue. The EP opens with 'Throwback Therapy', a perfect execution of the Juke X Jungle X Rave crossover, massive amounts energy and
deft audio touches are all very much present. 'Percussive Aggressive' follows this and here is where the versatility comes into play- staccato kick drums leave room for the percussive elements to carry the rhythm forward underpinned by massive subs. 'N20' is a track made for exactly sound-systems, minimal drums and maximal bass, a very foreboding track due it's sparse nature with just enough minds and vocal FX to carry the momentum through, It's 3am all-enveloping club music. Track number four- 'Alive' is the most techno of the five tracks on the EP, the chords in the track are reminiscent of classic Chicago sounds whilst the skittering percussion give a lot of energy to proceedings. This EP feels like a statement of intent from Fixate, digging his heels into 2015 via the perfect outlet of Exit Records.

Since its inception at the end of the last century, POP AMBIENT has always been a labor of love: meticulously curated by Wolfgang Voigt, these releases never showed much interest in any particular style of the day. Much more genre-defining than trendsetting, they followed their own path and established a unique aesthetic sitting somewhere between experimental field recordings, no-age music and smooth synth pop - we like to think of it as elevator music for the vertically challenged. It's also been an overflowing pan these last years, with a dizzying array of musicians trying their hands at beatless eletronics with certain time-transcending properties - as good a reason as any to take the brand one step further and introduce our listeners to our freshly minted Pop Ambient album series, where we'll spoil you with full-length offerings from top-tier tinkerers in the field. Serving as the series' glorious first instalment is EL REINO INVISIBLE, a diverse and conclusive collection of beautifully rendered synthscapes from none other than Pop Ambient staple LEANDRO FRESCO.

Music For Alien Ears

12inchEM1124LP
EM Records
Release unknown

Martoc, aka Martin O'Cuthbert, has been making alien and alienated synth-pop in the UK since the post-punk period. This compilation gathers six songs released on seven-inch EPs during the years 1978-80, plus four songs released during the first decade of this century !
The tracks show a distinctive stylistic unity, inspired by fellow spirits like Fad Gadget, The Normal, John Foxx and
Kraftwerk, across the decades Martoc has maintained both his close relationship with his synthesizers and an arms-length relationship with society, resulting in an appealingly quirky and individualistic iciness, informed also by his love of science fiction writers such as J. G. Ballard and Iain Banks.

One of the songs included here, "B.E.M.S.", was chosen as
Record Of The Year by John Lydon in New Musical Express in 1978, John Peel was also a supporter. Despite these and other accolades, Martoc and his simultaneously catchy yet disturbing music has hovered resolutely under the radar, an alien craft avoiding detection by an unaware and perhaps unprepared world. Gathered together here, this collection of tracks offers an excellent opportunity investigate an alien explorer.

Severed Heads - Clifford Darling, Please Don't Live In The Past

Severed Heads are one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the Australian post-punk independent music scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of 'industrial' noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many line-up changes featuring Garry Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, Severed Heads was the vehicle for composer Tom Ellard.

In 1985 their record label asked them to release a retrospective, so they dragged out bits that we had lying around from 1979 up til 1983. The compilation was titled Clifford Darling Please Don't Live In The Past', spread out into a montage over four sides of vinyl. Bradbury and Ellard would fuss each bit and sling it on their new digital recorder, and since they still have the digital recorder, this reissue is made directly from the bits assembled twenty years ago. This compilation includes live recordings, raw demos, unreleased studio recordings and solo pieces from each member of the band during from the first five years. Their early music was characterized by the use of tape loops, noisy arrangements of synthesizers and other dissonant sound sources in the general category of industrial music. After several releases in that vein, Severed Heads began incorporating various popular music tropes, such as a consistent 4/4 rhythm, strong melodic lines, resolving chord arrangements and the occasional vocal. This move was underscored by the incorporation of mimetic devices, such as drum machines and bass synthesizers. The result was a striking hybrid of the avant-garde industrial and pop.

All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in a jacket featuring brightly colored, distorted, VHS graphics output by Stephen Jones' video synthesizer created by Tom Ellard video piece Kato Gets The Girl' in 1985, designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a fold-out poster with a color video still photo on one side and liner notes and credits on the other. 30 years later Severed Heads' perverse creativity is still paving the way for powerful imaginative challenging music far and wide.

Tarotplane - First

Tarotplane

First

12inchZORN41
Aguirre Records
05.01.2016

Tarotplane is the solo project of PJ Dorsey from Baltimore MD USA. Over the last few years he has been gradually crafting his debut album, appropriately called First. The end result is a tremendous album etched on the great krautrock & experimental psychedelic records from the 70s. Vintage electronic sounds are mixed with effected guitar parts. It might sound quite familiar at first, but once you enter the heart of the album it all gets spectacularely exhilarating. The true power of this album is how it swirls around and captivates you without any effort.

Records such as Franco Battiato's Pollution, Bill Holt's Dreamies, Popol Vuh's Affenstunde and Deuter's D were strong influences. All of these artists use tape loops, environmental sounds, filtering and other effect processing in an exceptional way. Their desire to create their own distinct sonic world was the driving influence behind this LP. These artists never let the experimentation get in the way of creating something musical, beautiful and sonorous. First integrates those influences but it also has a more traditional psychedelic rock sound built into its sonic viewpoint.

PJ took all these diverse influences and blended them together in the most seamless way possible. Something akin to a mix tape. First is a continuous flow from the start to the end. The album was originally going to be called excursions, because he would walk for hours on Baltimore's waterfront listening to fragments of his playing, as well as samples from films and records to find a balance that worked. The ultimate goal was to make what some would call a head record. Something you could listen to on your own personal excursions that would have a sonic headspace that was distinctive and enjoyable.

Colder - Many Colours (2lp/black Vinyl)

"Suicide-ish vocal meanderings and Krautrock-via-Joy Division hypnosis." - CMJ Magazine

Weitere internationale Pressestimmen:
"a wonderfully intoxicating return." FACT
"Exquisite - Colder sounds like a sparser, funkier Joy Division or a Digital Doors." - NME
"While there's more than a little influence from early New Order here, one can also hear echoes of Suicide, PiL's Metal Box and the motorik reveries of Cluster." - MOJO
"Colder's sound is at the height of chic, the perfect late-night complement to an evening of jealous lovers." - Pitchfork
"It pushes many of the same buttons as DFA/LCD Soundsystem, but with a sensuous Gallic cool missing from the more angular Anglo-Americans." - Q Magazine

Neon Indian - Vega Intl. Night School (2lp)

DBridge and Jon Convex's Heart Drive project comes correct with two devilishly dark club cuts for Pleasure District. "Sindicate" is an ode to paranoia thanks to its deeply-buried pitched down vocals and rising, insistent hook that drives further and further upwards like a trip that's gone awry. "Vent" is a more carnal, tribal affair with its plump drums and squid bass wriggling and shaking without compromise. A must-have for fans of Ruffhouse. A must-have full-stop for that matter.

D.a.r.f.d.h.s. - In The Wake Of The Dark Earth 2x12"

Now entering its seventh year, Dutch label Field Records continues to focus on great album projects. After a triple 12" compilation in 2014, and ahead of a third album in the coming months, now comes a 12 track opus, In The Wake Of The Dark Earth, by D.A.R.F.D.H.S. aka Swedish pair Michel Isorinne and Jonas Ronnberg. Between them, Isorinne and Ronnberg record under a number of different aliases and have done so for the last couple of years on labels like Opal Tapes and Northern Electronics. Their sound veers from foggy, experimental stuff to icy techno via deep acid, and produced a first album this time last year on Clan Destine Records. This new album is one for headphones or home listening, for lonely winter nights or long night time journeys. It's an absorbing ambient affair weighed down by a heavy sense of atmosphere. At times shadowy and eerie, at others cautiously optimistic, the perfectly crafted spaces within all invite you to get lost and completely forget the outside world. Arriving with enigmatic artwork in both digital and vinyl format, modern ambient never sounded better.

* A watchful eye has been cast from all corners of the industry onto our newest recruit Dawn Wall; currently storming the scene with superior quality drum & bass across the entire spectrum. At Integral HQ we're proud to present the outfit's third installment that goes by the name of Longshanks EP.

* Opening the EP with some serious levels of epicness, 'Spears' instantly takes over. This masterpiece is the epitome of musical drum & bass; a future timeless liquid anthem, executed to perfection.

* The title track 'Longshanks' features the folk-tinged vibe that is becoming one of the signatures of the Dawn Wall sound. This deep soul music with its warm, heartfelt grooves captures a glimpse of High Contrast's golden era with a Dilla-esque mood in tact. Not forgetting another catchy vocal to add to the limelight.

Ed Rush - Scarabs/boxcar

* An artist synonymous with Drum and Bass, Ed Rush has become a byword for cutting edge, forward thinking
beats. Moving through the sounds of hip hop and electro in his early musical years, Ed Rush soon became
interested in the emerging London jungle scene.
* Showing his innate ability to manipulate chopped breakbeats and piles of sub-low bass, it wasn't long before Ed Rush and Nico dropped the huge 'Bludclot Artattack'. The first classic to Ed Rush's name, this proved to be a platform for another collaboration with DJ Trace. Simultaneously developing his own style whilst pushing the boundaries of a genre, classics such as 'The Mutant' and 'Guncheck' put Ed Rush's attitude injected productions firmly on the map.
* One of the pioneers of new sound dubbed Techstep, Ed Rush soon teamed up within another leading light,
Optical; to form what would become one of the most progressive production teams in the scene. In 1998, Ed
Rush & Optical released an album universally recognized as changing the landscape of Drum and Bass forever with the legendary, 'Wormhole' on Virus Recordings. Still regarded as one of the main catalysts for the Neuro and Techstep sound, 'Wormhole' paved the way for household names such as Noisia, Bad Company and many more.
* Since then Ed Rush has released a plethora of genre-defining tracks and albums, both solo and with his partner in crime, Optical. Still busy at work on a new Ed Rush & Optical LP due in late 2014, Ed Rush is not merely content with helping shape the scene and remaining one of its most consistent producers. Beginning his own venture, he now looks to the future with the birth of Piranha Pool. An outlet for showcasing new talent and veterans alike, Piranha Pool represents what will be the future of Drum and Bass; so it's fitting that its first release comes from its creator, Ed Rush.
* 'Scarabs' (Drum & Bass)
Already causing a stir in the DnB fraternity, 'Scarabs' kicks off Piranha Pool with a bang. After a twisted eastern tinged intro transports the dancefloor to a faraway landscape, 'Scarabs' transforms into a classic Ed Rush track.
Featuring drums you have to move to, infectious synth lines and a catchy bassline all underpinned with crystal clear production, 'Scarabs' is squirming its way into the biggest DJ sets.
* 'Boxcar' (Drum & Bass)
The flipside sees Ed Rush change the pace but lose none of the attitude. Featuring rolling drums and ethereal vocals, Ed continues to bring the pain with serrated bass keeping the rave in check. Maintaining the same top level production as the A-side but pushing a different vibe, 'Boxcar' shows the versatility to Ed Rush's productions and caps off a stunning debut from Piranha Pool.

D'eon - Foxconn / Trios

D'eon

Foxconn / Trios

12inchKNV003
Knives
14.12.2015

'Foxconn / Trios' is a previously unreleased record originally recorded by d'Eon in 2012 during their involvement with the Hippos In Tanks label. Over the course of the first eight (out of nine) tracks, d'Eon's arsenal of sounds are rolled, stabbed and skipped through, presenting a more singular vision than d'Eon's previous releases. Their nearest contemporaries can be found in the audio-materialist studies of Mark Fell, post 'Oversteps' Autechre, late period 0pn, or Lorenzo Senni.d'Eon explains the material and the compositional process as follows: 'The tracks comprising the record freely and irregularly travel both forward and backward in MIDI-time. By putting together small arrangements using low sample-rate soundfonts in a tracker, and by writing short loops that are legible both forwards and backwards, the MIDI information can be traversed in any arbitrary direction at any arbitrary intervals and still be harmonically and contrapuntally sound. Ordinary rhythmic patterns are inherently legible regardless of the firing order of events because of a snare's inherent role as the up beat and a kick's as the down beat. If all notes in a phrase and all chords in a progression work equally well with their neighbours before them and their neighbour after, the direction of the clock is irrelevant. If those conditions are met, a 32-bar, two- three- or four-chord pattern with a single melody is easily made into a fully through-composed piece of music that could continue for hours without any pattern repetition at all.'The many facets of the new sound begin to unfold at the end, when the ninth and closing track 'Foxconn II' leaves the release's dominating technique behind and rewrites the material into an instrumental R&B track. Though the same method is utilized throughout the first eight tracks it becomes striking that equally complex harmonic progressions are happening simultaneously producing a large plethora of moods, and revealing d'Eon's ability to combine the radically novel and original with the familiar and more tangible. d'Eon cinematically takes elements from the past and with an elegant violence rapidly animates them into the future, shaping the path towards what's to come. - Text by Nicolai Krog

Release unknown

Come join Spaniard Juan Alberto Arteche Guel and his musical co-adventurers on their good ship Finis Africae on an imagined musical journey along the Amazon.
This is a CD and vinyl LP reissue of their 1990 album, a rare and highly sought-after Balearic classic, Guel's masterpiece. Finis Africae was part of the musical flourishing that emerged at the end of the Franco regime, and this album, guided by the visionary Guel, captures the mature results of that era of new-found openness and freedom. Capturing Guel's production skills at their peak, "Amazonia" is informed by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno and their idea of a "fourth world" music. Arrangements which are spacious and fittingly aquatic feature electronic and acoustic instruments in thematic pieces which at times free-flowing and at others ripplingly percussive. Vividly imagined and beautifully recorded, this is a pleasant and memorable journey.

Muscle Up is a collection of Cowley's instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1980 found in the Fox Studio vaults. This compilation also includes bonus compositions found in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges and the attic of former bandmate Maurice Tani. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos, and Giorgio Moroder, Patrick crafted an electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, percussion, modified guitars, and hand-built equipment. The listener enters a world of forbidden vices evocative of Patrick's time spent in the bathhouses of San Francisco. The songs on Muscle Up are divided into four sides, each showcasing a different facet of Cowley's work. Side one opens with an ambient journey through the Amazon. Tension builds on side two, with the instrumental demo version of the slow-chugging masterpiece "I Need Somebody To Love Tonight". On sides three and four things go interstellar with ecstatic space-funk and galactic workouts.

Featuring 75 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from two Fox Studio films, "Muscle Up" and "School Daze", plus additional songs from the same era, never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings, then remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA.

Paul Jabanasam - Continuum

Continuum emerges as acrystallised vision deploying sound to explore the spectrum of life, power and energy present in the universe. Creating a speculative soundtrack to a timeline stretching from the primordial emergence of organic life through to the unknowable trajectory of the universe, it explores the magnitude of science's reach and the precarious role of humanity within this vast evolving system. The compositions adopt the central premise of mirroring of celestial events, algorithmic action and cellular behaviour, fusing these with a defiant tonal grandeur and an ever-present sense of chaos.
The album sits at a meeting point of fiction, composition and philosophy, considering how the past, present and an unknown future could be consolidated and perceived on both human and non- human terms. Examining whether the conditions that support life and the digital and atomic mechanisms that surround it can continue to work together asone ecology in the face of dynamic and unpredictable change.

Prince Rama - Xtreme Now

Prince Rama

Xtreme Now

12inchCAK111LP
Carpark Records
14.03.2016

Xtreme Now is the most extreme album Prince Rama has ever made. Working with acclaimed dance producer Alex Epton of XXXChange (Gang Gang Dance, Björk, Spank Rock, Panda Bear, The Kills), the new songs take on a more powerful, confident, fierce, infectious, all-encompassing, and accessible dance-club feeling than any other Prince Rama record—a fearless, visionary pop tour de force for the ghost-modern era that celebrates the ephemerality of life, dancing just at the edge of death's gilded smile.

Writing for Xtreme Now began while the Larson sisters were living on a black metal utopian commune on Vrmsi, a remote island off the coast of Estonia during the summer of 2012. There, Taraka had a near death experience inside an ancient Viking ruin which sparked a recurring sense of time-schizophrenia, or the physical sensation of existing in multiple time periods simultaneously. In this case, she experienced a joint-existence in both the medieval ages and the year 2067. In one of her prophetic visions she describes, In the year 2067, I witnessed an aesthetic landscape where art museums are sponsored by energy drink beverages and beauty is determined by speed. I saw a vision of ancient tapestries stretched across half-pipes and people base-jumping off planes with the Mona Lisa smiling up from their parachutes. I saw art merge with extreme sports to form a new aesthetic language of 'Speed Art.' I realized that time travel was possible via the gateway of extreme sports, and I wanted to make music that would provide the score.'

Perceiving a great void in the world of extreme sports for music that could match the metaphysical intensity of these death-defying feats, Prince Rama set forth to make Xtreme Now, the first real foray by any musician to create a new extreme sports genre.' For inspiration, the sisters looked to their own flirtations with death and time-dilation, along with countless hours of obsessively watching extreme sports videos and consuming dangerous quantities of Monster Energy drink.

Love Yes

2x12inchCAK112LP 2X12"
Carpark Records
21.02.2016

TEEN's new album, Love Yes, explores the disharmony and empowerment that both sexuality and spirituality can create within the modern woman's psyche. Universal ideas of loyalty, pleasure, purity, power, aging, and love are confronted with a knowable specificity. There is a quality of wholesomeness, but also an edge—a kind of wise anger and electricity.

After extensive touring following their breakthrough release The Way and Color (2014), the band had to keep traveling to find Love Yes. The group first went to Woodstock in the dead of winter to write new material. Here, keyboardist and singer Lizzie Lieberson created the stunning, autobiographical Please.' But the band, and especially lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Teeny Lieberson, felt a crushing lack of creative energy. Recognizing the need to recharge, they took some time off. Teeny moved to a small lakeside cabin in Morehead, Kentucky. Surrounded by rolling hills, sparked with sudden thunderstorms, and inspired by the musical joy of uninhibited late-night bluegrass jams and barn parties, Teeny immediately began writing again. Here she felt a new freedom in her songwriting, drawing on themes important to her identity as a woman, and exploring love, sexuality, and the tension between desire and the construct of desire that can exist within oneself, in relationship, and within society.

After three weeks in Morehead, Teeny returned to New York to workshop with rest of the band, including drummer Katherine Lieberson and bassist Boshra Al-Saadi. Acknowledging the benefits of being creative in a cocoon like the lakeside Kentucky country, the band decided to record at the Old Confidence Lodge, in secluded Riverport, Nova Scotia. Leaving the noise and relentless energy of the city behind, TEEN retreated into the nurturing stillness of Nova Scotia, the Lieberson sisters' childhood home. Situated on the La Have River, the studio was hidden in a perpetual mist while the band recorded day and night. Fueled by new material, a change of place, and creative collaboration, the lull of the winter lifted and the band came together in a new way. Teaming up once again with producer Daniel Schlett, TEEN wanted to capture the energy of full band recording. Rather than multi-tracking, Schlett worked with the band as they played the songs relentlessly, waiting to achieve the right energy and take as a group.

The result is a beautiful, detailed album about womanhood and the embodiment of the sensual, played by a group fully in step with one another. Love Yes bursts into the static air
with a vibrancy recognized by its confidence and power.

On the album cover, the quartet is bejeweled in crystals and bathed in Venusian red. This red is the colour of vitality and pulsing life — unmistakable traits of Love Yes. It is the iconic red of Dorothy's slippers and Eve's apple — potent with society's tales and notions of innocence lost. In Love Yes, something else more mysterious and tender is gained.

Kode9 - Nothing

Kode9

Nothing

CDHYPCD003
Hyperdub
22.12.2015

'Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album, and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man's land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Building slowly, but more upbeat than previous albums, many of these tracks have more in common with Kode9's recent singles from the last few years than they do with his two previous albums with collaborator The Spaceape, 'Memories of the Future' (2006) and 'Black Sun' (2012). Yet 'Nothing' is haunted both by The Spaceape's presence (he died in 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer), on 'Third Ear Transmission', a communiqué from a zone of digital immortality, and his absence, on 'Void', whose spaces were originally intended for the vocalist, and 'Nothing Lasts Forever', which closes the album with a 9 minute silence

Secret Circuit - Los Imaginones

Collecting Eddie Ruscha's cassette recordings over two compilation albums has been one of the highlights of the
label, so it seemed right to hand over the choice tracks to a set of his contemporaries from the City of Angels.First up is rising star Suzanne Kraft. The alias of Diego Herrara, very much a young man to watch. With releases for Running Back, Young Adults and Noise In My Head, as well as possibly EP of the year already as Dude Energy, while holding down being a member of The Pharoahs (ESP Institute / Not Not Fun) and not forgetting, one half of Blase with Mr Ruscha himself, he's a busy man so getting this remix took some effort! However, it was all worth
it, as Diego takes the crazy afro-stylings of Afrobotics and pulls it towards the danceflor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up is the quirksum individuality of The Samps. The project of one of LAs fiest, but hidden musicians,
Cole M.G.N. Working with Nite Jewel, Ariel Pink and Puro Instinct is cool enough, but his solo Samps project is another level, with a mind-altering exploration of funk warped electronics. Sure enough then, his take on Shockers is just that, a mash of beats, bass and sample cut ups. This is pyschedelic dance music for the mind.
Flipping things completely is LA's Mr Funk himself, Tom Noble. Taking the laid back grooves of Underdogs, Tom does his trademark good time, party vibes with a killer boogie style remix. Letting the groove do the work, keys and a good deal of wiggle just led it all ride home. Finally then is something Emotional Response is all about, highlighting producers the label is fans of, but letting them explore alternate spheres. While Cameron Stallones' Sun Araw project has become one of the names in
modern psychedelic experimentation, little is known of the alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child. With just one cassette of warped disco edits to his name, here he closes the EP with exactly that, a re-edit of cut up irreverance, twisted and looped to distraction - an ethereal experimental and modern musical genius...just like Mr
Ruscha.

Various - Tempa Allstars Vol. 8

London institute Tempa follow up 7 stellar installments of their Allstars series - a bountiful compilation project that's included some seminal material from the likes of Benga, Kode9, Wen and Alex Coulton - with Tempa Allstars Vol 8.

Enlisting the production skills of some of the UK'smost auspicious young producers including Acre, Epoch, Cliques, Fracture, Youngsta &Distance and Biome - Vol 8 carries forth a spectral intensity present throughout the catalogue and packs a hefty degree of weight.Manchester based Acre kicks things off and follows up recent outings on Project 13, PAN and Tectonic with 'Messages' a chilly, percussive number that melds tempered whacks and thick, heaving bass tones with distant synths. New Zealand newcomer Epoch then expands on the lively tone set by his last record on Soundman Chronicles with 'The Ville': a brash and menacing stepper built for peak play.Sydney's Cliques then adds to a cross continental lineup with his 'AUT' - a capacious, dubby tool that generates a climbing sense of intensity before London's Fracture follows up his contribution to FACT's mix series back in March with 'Excalibur' - an immaculately produced and patient burner rich with razor sharp percussion and lively vocal clips. Youngsta & Distance then follow up with an untitled collaboration that harks back to heyday Dubstep with its rich, cavernous textures and dramatic, reverberated drum shots before Biome follows up releases on Macabre Unit Recordings, Mindset and Osiris Music and lays out a sparse, sub-heavy groove that rounds the release off as another fine addition to the Tempa series.

Wanda Group - Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight

Wanda Group is the Brighton-based Louis Johnstone whose prolific output for labels like Astro:Dynamics, NNA Tapes and Leaving makes him one of the most intriguing voices in contemporary electronic music. Johnstone's discography over the past two years is best understood as a process of refinement: the more overt sampledelia of 2010's Caveman Smack under the Dem Hunger alias has been gradually distilled until only the barely-there remnants of damage and decay remain. With that arc in mind, the excellently titled Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight for Opal Tapes is perhaps the producer's subtlest, gauziest work yet. Johnstone assembles these two side-length tracks out of large building blocks: 30 seconds or a minute of a single idea, each cross-faded into the next, moments recurring multiple times or bookending others to form oblique poetic sentences. The results function like a particularly cryptic, labyrinthine mini-mixtape. Within that, dance forms occasionally come under scrutiny: early in Her Stomach On Terror we're treated to a baleful techno throb over which reedy synths chirrup restlessly; later on, a hard-edged, Andy Stott-esque thump holds sway for a minute or so. The latter half of Pans Out In The Afterlife is dominated by a desiccated hulk of a kick drum, dreamy Detroit pads wheeling overhead. But Johnstone's relationship to the current crop of noise-techno fusionists is only passing; mostly this is an album of weightless moments: delicate washes of electrical hum, amplified grit in the wires, burbling synth clusters and stringently buried melodies. What's remarkable is the pathos that Johnstone wrings from these most microscopic of sonic phenomena.

Cecil Leuter - Pop Elextronique

France seems to be the secret kingdom of electronic music, experimental music and movie soundtrack music also known as library music. Roger Roger (1911 - 1995), one of the most prolific composers and bandleaders in this field, took a turn on the progressive side of the rather fresh electronic sounds back in 1969 under the pseudonym Cecil Leuter. His real name actually sounds even more like a malapropism but never mind this little strange aspect; let us go for the music. The album starts quite harmless with instrumental tunes that could be performed by a typical dancehall band of the day just with creepy electronic noises added to the entire picture. The further you get through the whole record the more crazy the performances get. Except for a few percussions more and more bits and pieces of the songs get created on electronic instruments and sound sources. And by the end of the album your mind will be shackled by minimalistic melodies embedded in arrangements of hissing, chirping and bubbling sounds. There still is a steady groove and a sense for accessibility with the final tune but all in all this album in all its groundbreaking width should rather please folks into the more twisted and obscure late 60s experimental music and early electronics than pop fanatics. Acidheads are also welcome to let their minds move on this fantastic little oddity. This is all in all still music in the true sense of the word unlike some works by Roger's younger compatriot Pierre Henry from the 'musique concrete' and experimental electronics field around the same time. Take a listen and trip through these strange lands of sound if you dare. The tracks are well performed and for this beautiful reissue everything has been well restored. Worth to be worshipped by 1960s underground freaks.

Dego - Nuts!

12inchBBR005
Blueberry Records
21.07.2014

Whenever Dego releases a 12" change occurs. Music changes. Producers switch gears. Panic sets in. Tidal-wave size ripples echo throughout time forcing shapes to be thrown and bodies to be bounced. Where words alone can not convey emotions, Dego speaks through his music, healing all that are willing to open their ears. Through some bizarre twist of fate Luck Hard work Dego and Blueberry Records have come together on a 12", where we believe such epic words are necessary to guide this space vessel to it's intended home - the heart and mind of the passionate music lover and the desperate soul of the everyday human seeking ascension. Opening with Nuts! the 4th quarter addition to the EP, Dego lines up the dance floor in his sights, takes aim and slays you. The play between rhythm and synth is so cold yet so hot, it's the tiger balm your dance partner has been aching for. Could Murder A Burger has made the rounds in Blueberry HQ for a little while, finally landing on this ep with it's thoughtful piano movements and load bearing bass. Could power a steam engine and serve a cup at the same time. Flip side opens with Celestian Ditton a possible ode to the hifi of yesteryear, slow burning, ever charming and romantic. Warm and embracing, analog and rolling. Closing out the EP is a remix from FaltyDL "The force is strong with this one" a quote from Dego himself. Paying respect to the master, maintaining integrity with added
funk and scatting. Yes, scatting.

Chester Raj Anand, who records as Lord RAJA, may have been in Austin to perform at SXSW, but he wasn't going to leave without bringing home a few things for himself. While I was there,' he explains, I went to that famous synth store, Switched On, and my mind was blown. They had everything—all these modular synths, a mellotron, Elektron synths. Just everything.' As he was surveying the goods, a plan began to form. I asked the person who was working there, 'Would it be OK if I took my laptop and recorded some sounds' And I just started going crazy—plugging everything in, trying out di-erent things, messing with drum machines, and recording all of it using RME Babyface. When I walked out, I felt like I had made o- with the loot.'Those sounds formed the basis for PARA, RAJA's second full-length and the first that fully captures his vision for his music. This is probably my most successful attempt at making a consistent work,' he says. I was really conscious about making a record that wouldn't alienate people.'Which doesn't mean he cut back on experimentation.

If anything, PARA is his most adventurous work to date. Every song makes use of RAJA's Lexicon PCM 90 and an Eventide H3000 that he modified himself to get the e-ects he heard in his head. RAJA used these processors as instruments, creating customized reverb and textures to suit each song. In the background of the slowly-pooling into Stars' is a sample of a man screaming in Hindi that RAJA recorded at a play in India with his iPhone. That same song opens with chords from RAJA's H3000-a-ected Yamaha YS 100 synth, making for a kind of orchestral commencement before the chaos that follows. On Ride Out,' which he describes as Bone Thugs-inspired,' he used a vocoder app to stretch and warp his voice. And H3000' came by its otherworldly sound after RAJA took a song he recorded on his iPad and slowed it down using reel-to-reel tape. What ties it all together and makes the record so immediate is the fact that each of the songs has a steady groove. No matter what unusual methods RAJA used to generate the sounds, the final product feels cohesive and enveloping. 'Inclusion' was the theme of this record,' he explains. Innovation can be done in a very disciplined and subtle way. Look at Prince's discography—the stu- he's doing is still, to this day, immensely innovative, but you wouldn't feel so challenged by it that you think, 'I can only listen to this at a certain time.' Too many people take the approach, 'If you don't get this, you're not complex enough—you're not part of the future.'

I think people who talk like that are on the wrong side of history.' Though they were recorded in a variety of locations—in hotel rooms while RAJA was on tour, or while he was traveling throughout the Indian state of Rajasthan, all of the songs on PARA move within a specific, ordered universe. Zerulean,' with its skittering drum track, nods RAJA's work in hip-hop, blending warped synths with a heaving rhythm. Butterfly on a Jet' summons both the anxiety and tranquility of its title, synths bobbing and darting over rattling drums. And Koi Fish,' which RAJA says was inspired by Jersey Club, wobbles and leaps, a dance song engineered for early mornings. Throughout the record there are hints of the music RAJA grew up on—trace elements of hip-hop in Flying Towards the Ground,' soulful club music in Broken Computer,' glitchy jungle rhythms in Shook.' What unifies PARA is its ability to reference an encyclopedia of dance genres while maintaining an aura of mystery and calm. And while the music it contains is forward-thinking, it remains approachable—easy to enter, easier still to get lost inside. The title, PARA is an open-ended 'For,'' RAJA explains. It could be 'For You,' it could be 'For' something you're doing. Ultimately, it's for whatever you want it to be for.' PARA retains that flexibility and fluidity, while staying true to the person who who made it. I feel like I was very prepared to make this album,' RAJA says. I wanted to include everyone, and say 'This is my voice.'' On PARA, that voice comes through loud and clear:

Maztek / Mindscape - Do It Like This / Sinestia Remixes

DAUDIO026 is a very special release indeed. Forming the first part of a two-part special issue, the EP celebrates five years of BTK's nowclassic label, Dutty Audio. Dutty has always been an outlet for BTK's own music and collaborations, as well as featuring guest artists, standing for the highest quality dancefloororiented neuro- and tech-influenced drum & bass, and the new EP shows this off, with some massive releases of tracks from Optiv & BTK himself, Mindscape and Coppa, Maztek and Level 2. Prepare to enter the world of Dutty Audio, as the label sets the future by looking into its past.
The first tune is Let It Loose, by Optiv & BTK, remixed by Emperor. This is classic Dutty of the highest order, dropping straight in to a charging main line, with barking samp les and an addictive bass line. Emperor sets his sights clearly on the rave, banging it out warehouse-style. Sit up, take notice, and Let It Loose.
This Is swiftly followed by the Italian master Maztek taking on Do It Like This, from Mindscape featuring Coppa. After the echoing intro, Coppa's trademark vocals light up your speakers, before sinewy electronic noises take you up to the drop. Mashing beats lead you through, with Maztek adding in some rushy mini-breaks and increasing levels of insanity. Don't watch this one, just Do It Like This.
The third cut sees the tables being switched, with Mindscape re-imagining Maz's Sinestesia. Yet more magic from both parties sees an epic build reaching for the ceiling, before coming crashing down with a course of flexible drum lines and rumbling electronic bass. You've Nothing To Fear from the closer, as Kyrist remixes Level 2. Creeping, crawling effects lead up to a funky, headnodding beat, which Kyrist uses as a tool to create an entire world in music and sound.
DAUDIO026 rightly celebrates the first five years of Dutty Audio. Here's to five, and many, more.

Monuments - From The Future

Mannequin Records escavation into the archives of the Italian minimal synth of the early 80's continues. This time we are deeply honored to present the 1982-1983 demos tapes of Turin's Monuments, who released in 1984 their only official mini-LP 'Age', comprising six incredibly fantastic electro-pop tracks, which was already reissued by Mannequin back in 2013.
The Monuments came into being in January 1981 in Turin when Mauro Tavella (keyboards, programming) and Andrea Costa (keyboards, voice) pooled their artistic experiences. From the outset, they produced exclusively synthesized music, following the natural evolution in electronic music from the early days with monophonic synthesizers to the latest virtual sounds generated with the aid of computers.

Most of the tracks have been composed between the summer and autumn of 1982 in their own private recording studio TKS in Turin. Some they were made at the beginning of 1983 but only a song, 'Clock's room', was later arranged and entered fully into the mini-lp 'Age'.

Mort Garson - Mother Earth's Plantasia

2nd EDITION on WHITE-GREEN SPLATTER VINYL! This man is well known as one of the pioneers of electronic music in the late 60s and some may have heard of his contributions to quite a few pop hits back in the day when he wrote and conducted orchestral arrangements for the one or another really popular artist. During the second half of the 1960s Mort Garson and his sidekicks Paul Beaver and Jacques Wilson among others discovered the newly invented synthesizer courtesy of Robert Moog and made it an integral part of the future pop music even before Walter (now Wendy) Carlos released his famous and fabulous 'Switched on Bach' album in 1968. All this is for sure another story, so we concentrate on an album by Mort Garson recorded and released a few years past his monumental works 'The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds' (1967), 'The Wozard Of Iz' (1968) and 'Lucifer - Black Mass' (1971). Every fan of unique psychedelic (The Zodiac) and mind-bending electronic music (the two others) should certainly lend an ear to these three masterpieces but there was more to come. 'Plantasia', originally released in 1976, has been labeled 'warm earth music for plants and the people who love them'. So you as the listener can imagine that what you get to listen to here is rather a bright affair far from the dark and seething atmosphere of the earlier electronic pieces. A shining diversity of stylistic devices have been used as fundament for the dreamy and colorful compositions that work like a soundtrack for a non existing movie actually. The warm yet haunting moog melodies can still create a rather sinister vibe in their most playful and surreal moments you would expect to experience while watching some early to mid seventies horror flicks from Italy. It is a feeling that despite everything seems peaceful and relaxed on the surface something utterly dire is about to rise up. These are certainly just a few passages and when Mort Garson and his mates move on from lush orchestral soul arrangements to something white men always consider to be tribal music of the North American natives, you will drift with them from one scene of your inner mind movie to the next. At this point in the seventies the technical requirements have already been a bit better with new inventions such as electronic percussion which gets used here and there conjuring memories of records by German electronic pioneers from the same era such as Cluster, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. And despite the twinkle-toed harmonies and big arrangements which point at the big band music and orchestral pop Mort Garson originated from, the whole work is futuristic and intriguing. So it rather feels like an old science fiction movie and not a horror film, but we leave the interpretation to you alone. The best way to enjoy this masterpiece of synthesizer music is to lay back and close your eyes while drifting away into a territory still unknown to man.

Paradox - Rockdown / Divination

Green & Black Marble vinyl in Die-cut logo jacket. Paradox Music returns with a 12' from Paradox paying homage to the golden years of Breakbeat Hip-hop and B-boy culture.
The raw breaks of 'Rockdown' take centre stage whilst searing horn loops and deep bass subs combine to make an infectious groove. Rap vocal hooks and live scratching drive the funk and 'Rockdown' steps, kickbacks and rolls in true Paradox B-boy style. On the flipside 'Divination' takes a deeper route with science fiction pads and eery film samples. Punchy breaks and distorted 808 booms lead with keys and fx into a fresh ride-break onslaught of pure Drum & Bass.
