Smoove - Recorded Delivery

17
JAL284V
Jalapeno
2x12inch17.09.201917.SEP.19

Hip-HopR & BSoul

You may already be familiar with the tall haired, north-eastern gentleman - Smoove as one of the founding members, producer, and resident bongo player with Geordie soul outfit – Smoove & Turrell. But the man has got many strings to his bow and in case you didn't already know, he's a jolly good remixer, DJ, and selector too…

After cutting his teeth and honing his chops on the respected Acid Jazz record label as well as his own - Wack Records imprint he's since found a permanent home in Jalapeno Records where he releases the bulk of his musical output. Apart from Smoove & Turrell, his first solo outing on the label was a compilation of some of his finest remixes all collated together in one very DJ friendly package entitled 'First Class'.

As it was well-received, for the next instalment he's sticking with the theme, and stamping his authority on postage-based names, dubbing this batch 'Recorded Delivery'.

This time round there's some truly killer cuts from the likes of: Bahama Soul Club, Nicole Willis, Myles Sanko, Renegades Of Jazz, and of course – Smoove & Turrell. All of which get a healthy sprinkle of the Smoove production magic. Yes this truly is something you would like to receive through your letterbox.

And you can make that happen! If your letterbox is larger than 12" that is- as the record will be released on vinyl as a full-length LP. This will be the first outing on vinyl for many of the tracks (Izo FitzRoy, John Turrell, Nicole Willis, Mysdiggi and M.O.N.C) which makes it a must-have for DJs and collectors alike - it's definitely something to write home about…

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Another Nervous rap nugget from da vaults!

Black Moon's 'Buck em down' is an anthem! One of the few instances in hip-hop where the remix is almost as infamous as the OG version.
Well, this is the OG version, finally on 7" - dirty version b/w Da Beatminerz instrumental. Filthy. Banging. Essential. Listening back to these jams is taking us back to the days of obsessively watching Yo! MTV Raps, BET, The Box and whatever else we could find on cable, pure memories, all caught up in that slamming Donald B loop, and those drums?! You can literally HEAR the grit flaking off of Evil Dee & Mr Walt's SP. Incredible. Word life.

Fully legit, licensed and reissued by Above Board distribution in conjunction with Nervous Records, NYC. 2019.

East Of Oceans - Neverlasting Love
RS1911
R&S Records
12inch27.08.201927.AUG.19

Hip-HopParty BreaksBeatsDrum&Bass

R&S welcomes Brock Van Wey AKA East Of Oceans (also known as ambient legend dvdub for his stunning 2018 album 'Drowning in Daylight' on Apollo) "East of Oceans is a pure tribute to my rave history that brought everything into being; pure elation, pure drive, pure escape, and frankly, just hearing shit that was the fucking jam."

Van Wey debuts on R&S with his stunning new EP as East Of Oceans 'Neverlasting Love'. As always, Van Wey's music connects deeply into his past - his East of Oceans monicker draws on his time as a stalwart DJ and promoter of the halcyon 90s San Francisco rave scene, and features a much more direct aesthetic than the gauzy remembrances of his work as bvdub. "My music as bvdub is about pausing to remember what it means - East of Oceans is about moving to forget it all."

Before Brock began DJing, made his first ambient mixtape, or began down the road of ambient, deep electronics, and deep house to follow; "I began my rave life, as many did, in breaks and hardcore, the faster the better. The harder the better. But always the deeper the better.”

Packed with explosive breakbeats combined with haunting vocals and sepia tinged soundscapes, ‘Neverlasting Love’ is another stunning release that see Van Wey working at the peak of his powers.

Daymé Arocena - Sonocardiogram
BWOOD203LP
Brownswood Recordings
12inch06.09.201906.SEP.19

Hip-HopSoulPopJazzLatinFolk

The visionary singer, songwriter and composer returns to her Havana roots
A sun-baked, vibrant record backed by a killer band of fellow Cubans The new album from Daymé Arocena is a vivid return to her Havana roots. Backed once again by a killer band of fellow Cuban musicians, the visionary singer, composer and songwriter has stripped everything back to the core. Holding sessions in a simple, repurposed artist’s studio in Havana, Daymé produced the record herself, taking the reins to make “Sonocardiogram” her most raw and arresting outing yet.

A jazz-tipped record rooted in the rhythms of rumba, she draws on the island’s intertwined rituals of family, music and religion. Ringing with echoes of the greats, songs nod to the likes of Tito Puente and La Lupe, inspirations which carry the sound of Cuba’s sun-baked, vibrant daily existence. Odes to Santería deities are underscored by the sacred frequencies of the batá drum, translated to be played on a Western drum kit. It’s an intoxicating window into a singular artist’s worldview. An important voice in Latin music, Daymé has collaborated with influential peers in Cuban music, like Roberto Fonseca, and US heavyweights like Dexter Story and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. From a recent appearance at Primavera Festival, to sold out tours across Japan and the US, her spectacular live show continues to draw crowds around the world.

Hip-HopAvantgardePopPunk

Zru Vogue is a two man post punk avant-pop group from Palo Alto, California, combining the talents of Andrew Finkle and Rick Cuevas.

The band began in 1980 as a four member group: Rick, Andy, Tom Sanders and Nancy Miller. Tom and Nancy left the group shortly after the first single, "Nakweda Dream", was released by independent San Francisco label Adolescent Records in February 1981. Inspired by rave reviews and heavy airplay on alternative radio stations, Andy and Rick went back into the studio, now as a duo, to record some new ZRU tracks.

The self-tilted LP was released on the band’s Zero Risk Records in 1982. It contains eight compositions blending African tribal and Middle Eastern rhythms, avant-garde rock, minimal electronics, and funk-rock guitars.

The duo’s sound is inspired by the art and anti-art movements of Dada and Surrealism. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a replica of the original jacket, which features artwork by the group members, and includes the original 2-sided lyric sheet.

Phil Mison - Out Of The Blue V.a.
LENGLP012
LENG RECORDS
2x12inch12.06.201712.JUN.17

HouseDeepTribalHip-HopDownbeat

Over the years, Phil Mison has become the go-to selector for those looking for Ibiza-themed compilations. None of his previous collections, though, have been quite as personal as Out Of The Blue, a compilation inspired by his first spell behind the decks at the Café Del Mar in 1993 - and the remarkable chain of events leading up to it.

Mison made his first trip to Ibiza in the summer of 1991 and quickly fell in love with the magical music being played by Café Del Mar resident DJ, Jose Padilla. On his return to the UK, Mison began to cultivate his own take on the laidback, open-minded style, recording mix-tapes of Ibiza style chill out' tunes to give to friends.

In November 1992, Mison was hanging out in Tag Records, Soho, when Padilla walked in. He plucked up the courage to speak to the Spaniard because earlier that summer Mison had given one of his friends some tapes to take out to Jose in Ibiza so he wanted to see if he had got them. During the conversation Mison invited him down to his next DJ set at Nicky Holloway's club, the Milk Bar and less than three months later, and clearly impressed by what he'd heard on the tapes, Padilla invited Mison to fill in for him at the Café Del Mar, beginning in April '93.

It's that first trip to DJ in Ibiza - a crazy six-weeks spent dividing his time between spinning records at Café Del Mar, hanging out in Jose Padilla's house in the hills, and meeting some particularly eccentric White Isle residents - that proved the inspiration for Out Of The Blue.

The compilation contains a mixture of records that Mison played in his earliest Ibiza sets, those that remind him of that period, and recent discoveries that boast a similarly warm, loved-up vibe. Mison is at pains to point out that it's not a track-for-track representation of his first sets, but rather a collection inspired by this most momentous of experiences.

As you'd expect from a selector of Phil Mison's standing, Out Of The Blue is an outstanding collection. Some will no doubt hear the influence of his mentor - the man he credits with effectively turning his DJing career around - in the undulating rhythms and new age melodies of Kamasutra's Sugar Step', the meandering synthesizer solos and Spanish language vocals of Congarilla's sublime Sacred Tree', and the lilting flamenco guitars of Gambarra', an unreleased mix from Mison's popular Cantoma project.

Elsewhere, listeners can marvel at the starry ambient bliss of Belgian legend Frank De Wulf's The End', recline to the saucer-eyed fusion jazz of the Christoph Spendel Group, shuffle along to tactile, hard-to-find period deep house from Language, Moodswings and Don Carlos, and marvel at The Cactus Rose Project's ridiculously rare Jelly', a sparkling, disco-era jazz-rock outing partly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' Long Train Running'.

Out Of The Blue may well be a very personal selection of tracks celebrating a moment in time, but it's happily one that we can all enjoy.

Hip-HopFunkSoul

This new 7-inch by S-tone Inc., that includes two brand new tracks, confirms Stefano Tirone's 20-year old collaboration with Brazilian songwriter Toco. "Try My Love" is a fluid, relaxed and dreamy funk song that blends soul jazz with a '70s downtempo drumming groove.
"Odoya", featuring Toco on vocals, is a bit more faster composition, that would perfectly fit as a soundtrack of a typical Italian police movie from the same decade! Simply fantastic!

Tappa Zukie - Freak
ST002

12inch14.08.201314.AUG.13

Hip-HopSoulPopWorld Music

Tappa Zukie's super rare reggae dub-disco cut 'Freak' is now repackaged and repressed in an authentically designed sleeve. The original sounds as relevant as ever, landing in an era of revived disco interest and a renewed passion for the rare and the collectable. Huge tip!!
The 'Freak' refrain still exudes as much attitude as it originally did with the heavily swung and grooved bass and soaring strings still intact. The exclusive B-side features the Stars' in-house band, Musical Intimidator, performing their own cosmic, dub-heavy version of the original layered with oscillating synthoid stabs, organ workouts and heavy hitting stabs of guitar. It's a real gem that properly steals the show!

Benefitting from a slicker remastering and a tighter sounding mix, the whole package is a delightful reminder of the influence and diverse roots of such a genuinely revered rarity, and is sure to fire up the passions of many-a-collector and Deejay upon it's reissue.

Various - Return To The Mothers' Garden (More Funky Sounds Of Female Africa 1971 - 1982)
ASVN044
Africa Seven
12inch17.09.201917.SEP.19

Hip-HopAfrobeatPopWorld Music

"For you will find, as women have found through the ages, that changing the world requires a lot of free time. Requires a lot of mobility. Requires money, and, as Virginia Woolf put it so well, 'a room of one's own,' preferably one with a key and a lock. Which means that women must be prepared to think for themselves, which means, undoubtedly, trouble with boyfriends, lovers, and husbands, which means all kinds of heartache and misery, and times when you will wonder if independence, freedom of thought, or your own work is worth it all. We must believe that it is. For the world is not good enough; we must make it better."

(cite. Alice Walker: In Search Of Our Mother's Garden, 1983)

In 2018 we introduced our first Mothers' Garden compilation on International Womens' Day. This compilation looked to shine a light on the often under-acknowledged musical contribution from female African artists. In 2019 we are back with Volume 2 presenting yet again some of Africa's most recognised female artists alongside some lesser known artists. Whilst the roster might have changed slightly, the quality of music is as funky as before and the message stays the same.

First up is the wonderful Theodora Ifudu. Another Nigerian star who made it both in music and TV, Theodora produced two studio albums with all the glitz and glamour you would expect from a New York film school graduate. "This Time Around" is the title track from her 1983 album and provides a dose of irresistible disco vocals over the top an effortless groove. Next up is fellow Nigerian Oby Onyioha with her offering "Enjoy Your Life". This laidback disco number sees Oby repeat her infectious mantra, "Enjoy Your Life" with a backing provided by well-arranged strings and horns. Nana Love comes steaming in next with her fast-paced number "Talking About Music". Love is an accomplished singer, songwriter and bandleader and was produced by her husband Reindorf Oppong. The lesser known Joy Nwosu follows with an afrobeat number from the Afrodisia records vault. Finishing the A-side is none other than Mother Africa, Miriam Makeba. Whilst on the first Mothers' Garden we showcased her song "Xica Da Silva", this time round we present one her most well known numbers "Malaika".

HouseDeepHip-HopSoul

4 To The Floor pays homage to the iconic labels that have been instrumental and influential in the evolution of house music. Now the label is starting a new series of releases that celebrates classic tracks by giving them a fresh vinyl outing. The first release in this series comes from two artists who need little introduction. Kicking off the A-Side is Los Angeles based, Grammy nominated artist Josh One, with the 2002 King Britt Funke Mix of his smash hit 'Contemplation'. This mix took the reggae-esque original into a funky, organ lead house anthem with a rolling bassline. Turn over to the B-Side and you'll find the unmistakable vocal of Alana, recurrent collaborator with MK. Here Masters at Work go head to head with MK in this stomping Dub laden mix with slow jazzy keys. Two incredible records in one convenient 12' package.

EGOLI002-DISC2
EGOLI RECORDS
12inch08.08.201908.AUG.19

Hip-HopAfrobeatPopDiscoElectroWorld MusicFolk

The late 1980s in the rainbow nation was a time when disco was mutating into what was becoming known as Bubblegum: pop music aimed at the black population of South Africa.

Bubblegum was a response to Western styles like disco and the fast spreading house music which originally came from the black ghettos of Chicago and New York. When the second Summer of Love took over the UK in 1988, first house, and other electronic music styles conquered South Africa as well. DIY - do it yourself - a motto that had already appeared in the punk movement, lifted the young local scene to the next level. With a minimal set up - keyboards, some drum machines and samplers it was suddenly possible to make music without having to rent expensive studios.

1 of 3 12" in a compilation of tracks from The ON label which was active in South Africa between 1987-1992, an era following the end of the apartheid regime and defining the new sound of Young Black South Africa in the early 90s

The Idealist - Say Yes To No
IDEAL177
Ideal Recordings
12inch06.09.201906.SEP.19

HouseDubHip-HopReggae-Dub

Joachim Nordwall digests and mutates dub in unique industrial style on The iDEAList’s almighty
follow-up to a tape and 7” in this killer mode, bringing guest vocalists, JA’s Nazamba and polymath
John Duncan, for a deeply crooked ride worthy of rinse & repeat
Picking up where his raw ‘Early Tactical Experiments In Techno & Dub’ left off in spring 2019, the
rugged styles of ‘Say Yes to No’ poses only slightly less risk of contracting salmonella with a more
stewed and treated suite taking in proper songs starring Nazamba and John Duncan amid all
manner of virulent, wayward electro-dub variation.
As with his superb tape for Industrial Coast, that wicked 7” with Genesis P-Orridge, and even
his recent albums as Joachim Nordwall - ‘Conventional Wisdom’ with John Duncan, and the
collaborative CD ‘Communication Is Key’ - The iDEALIST naturally highlights fundamental links
between dub and noise - the core principles of manipulating sound in space - with a critical blend
of tactile playfulness and rigorous pressure.
The two vocal cuts are outstanding in their own rights; ‘Bigga Boss’ features Kingston-based poet
and playwright Nazamba utterly possessing the opening shot with his baritone growl, rooting the
LP at one pole, while John Duncan’s equally compelling appearance on a similar riddim in ’Tough
Doubt’ comes to epitomise the project’s direct approach toward alloying and allying styles with
alchemical suss comparable to The Bug, Ossia or Andreas Tilliander.
Vocals also spill out into the LP’s other tracks, but here they’re more textural and elusive,
scudding thru ‘Everyone Fucking Relax’ in a way recalling DJ Scud’s thudding remix of Bong-Ra,
or masticated into intelligibility on the amorphous dub-noise lurch of ‘Inner Space Dub (Insane
Version)’ and the LP’s cataclysmic closer ‘Say Yes To Dub’, which are all held tight in contrast with
the more defined techno and electro-dub structures of the LP’s club-ready highlights, ‘The Ecstasy’
and ’Shit Skull/Golden Mind.’
It’s a hugely enjoyable album - one that leaves bits in your teef and gets up in your head like a
healthy dab of shatter.

Tenesha The Wordsmith - Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts

On The Corner Records

Hip-HopHip-HopPopJazz

Tenesha the Wordsmith, who came to the fore on On The Corner’s 2018 release ‘Black Noise 2084’, has delivered a hard-cutting, gut-wrenching, and extremely moving spoken word album produced by Khalab that brings together different lines of black music – folkloric, jazz, and electronic dance – into an afro-futurist narrative with thunderous results. ‘Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts’, set for release on 30 August, lays bare difficult truths and projects the stories of hidden voices, with a warm and heartfelt delivery that envelops the soul.

The poems are dedicated to the intersection, the places where we contemplate identity, culture, trauma and love. ‘Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts’ is a place where they all meet. “I hope between these lines you find healing,” says Tenesha. “I hope your compassion for others grows. I hope you will make the decision you were afraid to make. I hope you will learn how to turn pain into power and purpose. Decide which type of beast you want to be and if you can’t make up your mind, watch the women…” Originally from Oakland, California, “a place where revolutionaries are born,” Tenesha the Wordsmith originally began to fuse hip hop and poetry while living in Albany, New York, where she created her first collection ‘Body Of Work’. Her early influences have returned with features from beatboxers and vocalists that give the album a distinctly urban hip hop vibe.

7"-Vinyl16.08.201916.AUG.19

Hip-HopReggae-DubAfrobeatPopWorld Music

ODD OKODDO is a Kenyan/German duo formed by Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek. This vinyl single marks their first outing, announcing the album "Auma" which will be ripe and ready in autumn 2019. Olith Ratego performs his immaculate vocals in the musical style called "dodo", which originates from the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, high in pitch and soulfully expressive. He himself refers to his music as "dodo blues". As a skilled luthier, Olith Ratego designs and builds his string instruments himself, first of all the five-stringed Okoddo which lends its name to the project. Sven Kacirek is a multi-instrumentalist commuting between Germany and Kenya for many years now. He plays the marimba, percussions and piano, next to producing this project. He has closely collaborated with various international musicians, among them Nils Frahm, Shabaka Hutchings, F.S. Blumm and Marc Ribot. "Okitwoye" is one song of the first ODD OKODDO album "Auma“, it comes in a multi-layered, ambiguous rhythm between three and four. The remix on the B side amplifies the essence of the song. Peter Power is a part of the Voodoohop collective from Brazil and his releases on Multi Culti or Polychrome Sounds fuel the rather slow, organically hypnotic dancefloors. He premiered this remix at the Heliodora festival in Brazil, at sunrise next to a giant waterfall, and it was just perfect.

Hip-HopFunkSoul

For Fans Of…Aretha Franklin, Betty Davis, Lyn Collins, Sharon Jones, Ann Peebles. Pink vinyl 45 is limited and for Indies only. 1000 copies Barbara Howard's On The Rise is more than just another rare soul LP. It's a love story. It's a dream. It was an attempt to break through. And although Barbara certainly never became a star, one song did become a staple in rare soul and funk DJ sets, keeping interest in Barbara Howard just under the surface. And as fate would have it in 2016, a sealed copy of the LP would find its way into Plaid Room Records in Loveland, OH and kick start the revival of her story and her music. In 1968, as an outgrowth of a community movement and talent search program called "Operation Step-Up", Steven Reece wanted to take his community movement to the next level. This is when the idea of founding an independent label came to mind. The idea was to self-produce quality records and through successful sales attempt to land major label distribution. Steve identified Barbara Howard as the talent and set to producing her record. The idea was to produce an LP with a variety of tracks that could be marketed to a variety of radio formats and markets (gospel, pop, soul, jazz, etc.). And while the record fizzled shortly after its release, Steve and Barbara ended up getting married shortly afterwards making this possibly the most romantic production of a record is soul music history. "I Don't Want Your Love" is the only track they produced that was NOT featured on the LP, so we're proud to get this deep funk banger back into the world at large!
