The Sampology-produced debut is a rich tapestry of styles and influence, with inspiration drawing from themes of self-empowerment, family and heritage, collaborating with contemporary musicians while studying jazz. Berlin-based collective African Acid Is The Future inaugurates its new label partnership with The Vinyl Factory by releasing the first in a three-part 2×12 series Ambiance.

The first instalment, Ambiance I, captures two extraordinary live performances in Berlin, backed by remixes from AAITF members Dauwd and Wolfonacid on the second 12.

The live performances feature Kenyan dodo singer Ogoya Mengo & The Dodo Women, and the woman once described as Zimbabwe's mbira queen Stella Chiweshe. The former was recorded live in Romain's Azzaro apartment, while Chiweshe's performance was captured in front of an enraptured crowd at Berlin's iconic Funkhaus venue.

Bike Thieves are back. On last year's celebrated 'Laura EP', the Stockholm duo plunged into the sounds of classic garage and deep house. On 'Catherina EP', Daniel Strand and Erik Danielson move in a slightly different direction. An explosive blend of afro grooves, tribal vocals and deep kicks and basslines, 'Catherina EP' lets the rhythmic frenzy of Fela Kuti encounter modern house. The record also features Saine, one of Finland's finest underground producers.

On the opening title track of 'Catherina EP', Bike Thieves offer a mysterious deep house burner which slowly builds up around punchy congas, sweeping pads and female chants, eventually exploding in an orgasmic djembe solo. They get even more organic on 'The Greatest Curve', an afro jam driven by funky basslines and polyrhythmic percussions. On the B-side, Saine offers his own take on 'Catherina', turning the track into a hypnotizing and sleepless groove of dance floor tribal.

North-Ghanaian Frafra-Gospel shooting star Alogte Oho is back with his Sounds of Joy for their third 7" on Philophon. With this piece they anticipate the upcoming launching of their first international album release in October 2019. The first 7" became a collectors item, the second one a hit and this one is ready to write a further chapter in Alogte's career.

Allema Timba is a slow rocking, grooving journey deep down into the world of Frafra-Gospel. Alogte and his choir put all their enthusiasm into this praise song, supported by perfectly placed horns and a singing synth. The instrumental version features Masaru Nishimoto, an expert on the Taisho Koto.

Beat Bronco Organ Trio play Soul Jazz, the sound of the 60's popularized by artists such as Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Jimmy McGriff and Reuben Wilson. Although this Tubby's version has never been released, "Nothing Don't Come Easy" ended up being a big hit at Jammys and still been praised today. It's the mid 80's interpretation of 70's roots reggae atmosphere. Hats off to the King!

Next up on First Word Records, we welcome the return of Don Leisure, with an EP of beats that see his two alter-egos go head-to-head, 'Shaboo vs Halal Cool J'.

Probably best known as 50% of Darkhouse Family, along with Melange label boss Earl Jeffers, they released their acclaimed debut album 'The Offering' in 2017 and subsequent remix project last year, featuring DJ Spinna, Kaidi Tatham and more. The duo are coolly establishing themselves as Cardiff's very own Mizell Brothers, recently producing Kamaal William's latest work, featuring on Kutmah's recent Izwid compilation, and collaborating on the Chicago x London project 'Where We Come From', featuring Makaya McCraven, Joe Armon-Jones, Nubiya Garcia, Theon Cross and First Word label-mate Quiet Dawn, amongst others.

'Halal Cool J' appeared originally in early 2017 with 'An Ottoman Excursion' on our sister-label, Excursions. A series of edits born out of a decade-long love of Turkish music, and some record-digging expeditions in Istanbul, something Don Leisure did the very day after 'The Offering' release party, prompting another series of beats. Ahead of an all-new full-length Halal Cool J album, here we have two tracks to give you a taste, 'Kazakh Honey' and 'Kaymak'.

'Shaboo Strikes Back' on the flip-side, with a track of the same name, and 'Mango Season'. 'Shaboo' was the name of a beat album that came out on First Word in 2017, inspired largely by Don's Bollywood actor Uncle, Nasser 'Shaboo' Bharwani, and by memories of journey's with headphones hurling out Hip Hop, fused with the sonics of his Mum's interruptions, and her favourite Asian radio station. 'Shaboo' featured in several end-of-year album lists, with Piccadilly Records calling it "the best album of it's kind since Dilla's 'Donuts'. Unmissable."

One of the later productions from the Chung brothers and it's the ultimate reggae soul sound that they wanted to achieve. Although Antrim and other Chung productions produced reggae, it's clear that they had US sounds such as soul and funk on their horizon.

Amazing and unique private soul/jazz-funk fusion LP, 'New York To L.A.: Coasting' is the first release (1980) on Andrew Scott Potter and David Eric Tillman's PO/ET label. Sublime from the beginning to the end, it has become, just like their second and final release '...Space...Rapture...', a sought-after collector's item.

Andrew and Eric both come from Chicago. They met in the early 70's, shortly after Eric's discharge from the U.S. Air Force. They played together on the local jazz scene for several years (among others, with Maulawi). During that period, Andrew also toured with Minnie Riperton and Eric toured with The Dells, Linda Clifford and others. In the late 70's Eric left Chicago for Los Angeles, when he began touring with The Temptations. Since moving to California Eric has played and/or recorded with a variety of artists, including, Willie Bobo, Justo Almario, Alex Acuna, Norman Connors, Billy Paul, GAP Band, Linda Hopkins, Billy Higgins, O.C. Smith, and many others.

Rescued from a haze of drugs, alcohol and questionable women comes a potent blend of heavy Chicago Funk, Modern Soul & Psychedelia. Influential recordings from the group's sought-after Funk classics have been sampled by Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Jim Jones, Raekwon & Leaders of The New School.

'Stash' is a previously unreleased 1976 album as mystical and mysterious as the great Rasputin himself. There is very little information available detailing where these recordings originated from or the reason why the album was never made available to the public.

This unusual release certainly breaks with the trend in this day and age of an overwhelming amount of reissues from an over-saturated & over-curated marketplace with liner notes that sometimes take longer to read than the length of time it takes to actually listen to the music.

Cut directly to vinyl from the recently found master tapes, this music presents material from the band at their artistic peak and the last recordings before Rasputin's Stash members went on to record Crystal Winds First Flight and Attitude, Belief and Determination.

The Roots Architects is a very special project produced by Fruits Records founding member Mathias Liengme. This is a tribute to the men in the shadow who built Jamaican reggae in studios. It gathers 50 of the greatest Jamaican session musicians from the 60's to the early 80's still playing today. Fruits Records brought them together in studio to create an original album of instrumental songs. '1000 Light Years' is the first single taken from the album to be released later this year.

This dark heavy roots song is played by what used to be The High Times Players nucleus in the early 80's: Barnabas on drums, Chris Meredith on bass, Gibby Morrisson on rhythm guitar and Tony Asher on piano. Then we have Robbie Lyn, Dwight Pinkney, Jah D Fearon, Obeah Denton, Calvin Cameron and Dean Fraser's horns section who spice up the riddim with beautiful themes and solos.

After expanding its roster and musical scope into jazzier terrains with Jukka Eskola Soul Trio, Timmion now introduces Sami Linna Quartet. Led by guitarist Linna, this international group of elite players paves way for their full length album with the single release "Mode For Tomorrow" b/w "Umoya".

The single hints to what's to come with a deep modal tune referencing 1970's spiritual jazz on the A-side, and groovy soul jazz on the flip. You can immediately hear that these compositions have been crafted with thorough understanding of the tradition, but with passion and capability to breath them to life in this modern age.

The lineup is truly something to write home to. Linna himself has over 20 years of experience working in the Finnish jazz scene, same as saxophonist Jussi Kannaste. Organist Mikko Helevä plays in Jukka Eskola Soul Trio as well as a host of other top jazz groups. But it is drummer Dana Hall who's is the most seasoned member of this experienced troupe. Namedropping might seen lame, but in this case we'll take it there as Hall has worked side to side with Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, Bobby Hutcherson, Ray Charles, Horace Silver, and Benny Golson to name a few.

Both tracks get a single edit treatment here and the full length versions will be available on the coming album. This is not jazz for the faint hearted, but the real deal meant for real people.

Instead, sisters and brothers, let's talk about the dangerous counterrevolutionaries who went out and bought a cheap synth and a rudimentary drum machine. The ones that got what 'punk' was really about. The democratization of art. A democratization unhindered by rules concerning the means of production. A democratization forged in the blazing fire of unrestricted influence. A democratization free of perceived notions of 'talent'. Sniffing Glue said learn three chords and form a band, Throbbing Gristle said why learn any chords at all... I am an artist because I say I am. More Marcel Duchamp than Malcolm McClaren.

So, sisters and brothers, who do you think led the counter-revolution Well I'll tell you. It was the man who stormed the Bastille and kicked the door down in the first place and he did it on the 16th July 1977. With the help of Tommy Vance. John Lydon's playlist that night on Vance's show included Tim Buckley, The Creation, Augustus Pablo, Bobby Byrd, Neil Young, Lou Reed, Peter Hammill and Can and put paid to any punk rock 'year zero' claims. Meanwhile, locked out of the studio, Malcolm had to listen to the counterrevolutionary manifesto being broadcast across the metropolis. Mark that date in your diaries, sisters and brothers: 16th July, the anniversary of the birth of 'post punk'. Just over a year later in October, Lydon rammed the point home with the release of Public Image, a personal and musical manifesto in 7' form.

The music on Plastic Dance 2 is the strangely coloured, distorted and frighteningly beautiful fruit of the seeds planted on that fateful day. Lessons learned and inspiration taken from the sonic aesthetics of dub, knowing that not all disco sucked and that even jazz was allowed. Music shaped by wonky approximation and appropriation. The artists on Plastic Dance 2 were artists because they said they were. Listen to their work and you'll know they were. Following on from their 2016 hit with The Valentine Brothers 'Taste Of Your
Love', producers Ernie Mckone & Toby Baker are back with two brand new
soul classics featuring Stateside singer and multi-instrumentlist Cheri
Maree.
Renowned for their high quality rare groove productions, Mckone & Baker
are kicking off 2019 with a double A-side of 'I Want You Back' & 'Starting
Over Again'. Two fresh 80's soul cuts smothered in synth bass and
trademark groove will be released through the London based label Boogie
Back Records. Started by Ernie Mckone & Oisin Little in 1990, the label
have released works by several other artists such as Omar, Mica Paris and
Max Beesley respectively.

In the last few years London has become the centre of the Jazz Renaissance. A

new burst of energy and attitude brought by young musicians, equally inspired

by the likes of John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra, as well as

Madvillain, J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Floating Points, has brought a welcomed

freshness to the London Scene. This exciting new environment brought a group

of young musicians together, all with a mutual desire to discover a new form of

expression. Together they created Cykada.
