Emerging during the early stages of the recording industry in Japan, the ryukoka style adopted some western classical, blues & jazz elements into traditional Min'yo folk music. Kouta Katsutaro would become one of it's most popular proponents, and along with another popular geisha singer, Ichimaru, forms the basis of a period dubbed the "Katsu-Ichi Era".

Music On Vinyl proudly presents a special edition of the Marvin Gaye Collected album. This deluxe edition is released in celebration of what would have been Marvin Gaye's 80th birthday on April 2nd 2019. The world lost one of the most important soul singers ever to grace the world on 1st April 1984. He has left behind a series of fantastic hits plus a handful of tracks which deserve the title of masterpiece, all Collected on this album.

Motown Records released the first Marvin Gaye record in 1961 '(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over', a single intended for (radio) promotion from the singer's debut album. This was followed up by the officially released 'Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide' a week later. Gaye scored his first real hit with 'Stubborn Kind of Fellow' in 1962, which he had co-written himself, joking about his alleged stubbornness. He found his own unique style with the single released at the end of the year: 'Hitch Hike'. The foundations were now laid for an enormous series of chart successes: 'Pride And Joy', 'Can I Get A Witness', 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)' and 'Ain't That Peculiar' are all Motown classics from 1963-1965 which are still being regularly played today after all these years. The duets he recorded with Kim Weston ('It Takes Two') and especially Tammi Terrell were certainly at least as good.

He scored his biggest ever hit with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' in 1968. 'What's Going On' from the same titled album became a number 1 hit in the USA and the album was received as a masterpiece everywhere and is now regarded as one of the most important records in pop history. In 1973, the artistically and commercially very successful, 'Let's Get It On' album was mainly a musical ode to Marvin's love for his new muse Janis Hunter. The success enjoyed by 'Sexual Healing' and the album which was released at the end of 1982, travelled with him. Suddenly Gaye, who had started to increasingly be forgotten about, was a celebrated star again and this was certainly a position the singer revelled in.

Marvin Gaye Collected is available as a limited pressing of 8080 individually numbered copies on transparent red (LP1) and royal blue vinyl (LP2). This special deluxe edition is housed in a gatefold sleeve with special spot varnish and contains 2 printed innersleeves and 2 exclusive postcards.

The Whole Truth is back after a small hiatus with a new collaboration with Eric Boss of Myron & E fame. Last seen together on Party Down, whose boogie stylings garnered support from the likes of Dam Funk, this time Eric takes the pitch-perfect 80s funk and gives his producer a theme tune, a calling card. This one is a real underground funk gem. Eric has been making waves on the boogie scene for sometime with his Pendletons releases.

Previous Whole Truth releases have had radio play from the likes of Monki(BBC Radio 1) and Nemone (6 Music). And this time, not only does the artwork come from Lewis Heriz (Sofrito) he also plays a mean guitar.

Our second volume of Jamaican doo wop & R&B records taken from the late 50s and early 60s. These records represent a period in which soundsystems were just starting to dominate the island, with Duke Reid and Sir Coxsone stepping up their rivalry by beginning to make and release their own records rather than rely on US imports for use in their dances. Many of these records are definitely more-or-less imitations of the American records, as the uniquely Jamaican ska sound was yet to take hold - however many of the future stars of ska, rocksteady and reggae were beginning to cut their teeth in the industry on these records, incl. Prince Buster, Derrick Harriott and more, and provide a unique view into the fledgling independent record industry culture in Jamaica that would prove to be unbelievably proflific and unparalleled for an island of it's size.

The second volume in a two-part collection of Jamaican doo wop from the late 1950s through to the early 1960 represents a period in which sound systems began to dominate the island, and were starting to step up their rivalry by beginning to record heir own platters rather than rely on imports to gain the competitive edge.

With the uniquely Jamaican ska craze yet to fully catch hold, these tracks are largely imitative of the sounds that had been reaching the island from American shores, albeit peppered with hints of what was to come ~ some of the future stars of ska, rocksteady and reggae are starting to cut their teeth here on these records, providing a unique view into the fledgling industry at a time of creative flux.

Jack Jacobs grew up in Philadelphia and started out his singing career with an acapella doo-wop singing group before becoming lead singer in some Philly R&B bands. After a while he decided to take up the keyboard so he got a full sized Hammond B-3 organ, which he used to lug back and forth to gigs from his 3rd floor apartment. Jack is remembered by friends and family as an incredibly talented musician and one of the most soulful vocalists they've ever known.

Childhood friend and jazz guitar legend Pat Martino recalls: 'I've had a chance to work with some seriously heavy duty singers, such as Ray Charles. He (i.e. Jack) was so spontaneously prolific; he was a poet. I can play some things for you right now and you would be shocked to find out he had no idea what he was about to sing. The lyrics were absolutely phenomenal, and they were extremely spiritual in context in terms of the message he was talking about. They were Biblical lyrics; absolutely overwhelming - just incredible'.

After Jack moved to Atlantic City in the 1970s, he wrote and recorded 'I Believe It's Alright', initially released on Libra, a small local New Jersey music label. The record barely got any exposure at the time despite how good it was. It channels honest, raw soul energy in its purest form - a truly uplifting song!

Originally released on the Jumbo Caribbean Disco label from Brooklyn. "Big Leg Mary" is on the same rhythm as Wayne Jarrett's killer "Come Let's Go" (same rhythm as DKR-125 ). Wasn't It You is a different cut from the earlier one on the Senrab label (a different cut of DKR 132), but equally as killer.

With one of the hippest jazz albums of recent years under their belt, Jukka Eskola Soul Trio is back with a fresh new single. It's truly a double-sider of the highest order, as both of the tracks deliver a completely distinct flavor.

"Tiny B" on the A side is a neat bossa jazz number, and as usual in top of the genre, the lightness serves only as a facade. The composition starts to evolve before the listener gets too comfortable, transitioning into a beautiful cinematic section, which is followed by tight solos by Eskola on trumpet and Mikko Helevä on organ. The trio rises beyond its numbers, as the maestro Teppo Mäkynen overdubs his drumming with added percussion and vibes.

Hiding on the B side is a furious jazz dance burner, which sees the trio rise to energy levels that surpass even Five Corners Quintet in their tightest form. "Stick of a Branch" is highly syncopated business that takes its cues from a sound refined by 1970's independent afrocentric jazz groups. It's a style, which is inherently modernist, without a slightest interest in mass appeal, and firmly rooted in the blues.

If you need some no nonsense organic jazz on your turntable, it's hard to go wrong with this single.

A couple of excellent Wackie's 12" sides from the '80s now paired together for maximum pressure.

Each originally appeared on separate 12"s in approximately '85 and '80 respectively. The A-side is another killer Sugar Minott shot, one of his many for Wackie's. That is paired with a more obscure one in the Wackie's catalog, "Zion Land", a great shimmering and chanting roots tune which is tough to find on original pressing.

This is the companion to Disco 3000, made on the same classic Italian quartet tour with John Gilmore, Michael Ray (trumpet) and the minimal but perfect Luqman Ali (drums). Ra himself plays piano and electronic keyboards, including the mysterious Crumar Mainman, which Ra describes as 'like a piano, organ, clavichord, cello, violin and brass instruments' and which also, importantly, has a facility for pre-programmed bass-lines and electronic percussion, which Ra uses constantly and to great effect in this small ensemble setting and seldom, if ever, elsewhere. The best of this collection (most of CD1) is luminous: very electronic, often rhythmical and melodic, always economical and making every sound count. These tracks are like no other jazz ensemble and, although recognisable as Ra - who else could think of, and then get away with, this - unlike any other Ra ensemble either. Ra makes the machines do amazing, visionary things while the band exercises restraint, remaining always in focus. In between, there are piano, saxophone, trumpet and drum vignettes, fresh and perfectly judged; this real was a fine band. This places the original vinyl release (and related releases, Sound Mirror and Disco 300) back into the context of the concerts, from which they were drawn. An important addition to the Sun Ra canon, since it is a rare document of an unusual Ra project that produced three classic late '70s LPs. Beautifully packaged and well annotated.

In the 1970s reggae music burst forth from its birthplace of Jamaica and took over the world. Who would have ever thought that one of the first outposts it captured on its way to global domination would be an unlikely city known mostly for its Brahmin heritage and blue-collar brawlers as well as for violent racial polarization Boston, Massachusetts was the first region in the US to really 'get' reggae, adopting it as early as 1973 when the city's huge student population turned the low-budget Jamaican B-flick The Harder They Come into a midnight cult classic. The city would gain a reputation as a key market for any international reggae act trying to gain a foothold in America. But besides being early enthusiasts and advocates for the music, Bostonians would also become bountiful producers of reggae as well, with a network of clubs, singers and musicians coalescing to form an organic Boston roots scene: A scene that would yield acts as varied as Zion Initation (a solid, spiritually-inclined Rasta band), to the I Tones (an ambitious, multiracial group that set a new standard for pop success), and even reaching across New England to embrace the Vermont-based Lambsbread (a latter-day reggae reincarnation of the legendary African-American proto-punk trio Death, later made famous by 2013's revivalist documentary (A Band Called Death).

Boston-based music journalists/historians Noah Schaffer and Uchenna Ikonne have teamed up with Cultures of Soul to compile an overview of some of the most crucial cuts to emerge from Boston during the height of the reggae boom in the 1980s. Formatted on CD or 2LP set both configurations come with a 28-page book documenting the rich history of this music scene with in-depth analyses and photos of the reggae artists involved.

Founded in 1951 by independent record store owner and radio show promoter Ernie Young, Nashville, TN's Nashboro Records recorded some of the most potent and forceful gospel music of the time period. Although initially begun in response to overwhelming demand for gospel locally, Nashboro quickly became nationally applauded for its curatorial prowess (under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Morgan Babb of the gospel group, The Radio Four) and signature production style. The lightly-reverbed, clear sound of a Nashboro record is unmistakable.
The Morning Echoes, led by Willie 'Slim' Ayers, formed in the late '40s, released their first record in 1951 and moved to Detroit in 1952. They started regularly broadcasting over radio station WJLB and became a part of the Nashboro Records family several years later. Echoes Of The Gospel was originally released in 1967 and was the first Long Playing record from these Motor City favorites. The Morning Echoes remained active in and around Detroit throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s. The project officially came to a close when leader Willie 'Slim' Ayers passed on September 17, 2013.
This Third Man re-issue came into our world when TMR artist and friend Kelley Stoltz sent a well loved copy of Echoes Of The Gospel in gratitude for having him play the Third Man Pressing Grand Opening Party. His note read 'Thanks for the fantastic experience! This one is a spirit lifter, In The Garden Of Eden does it for me. XO Kelley'.

Durand Jones & The Indications aren't looking
backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand
Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications
conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis
Mayfield AND the Impressions. Even with an
aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused
dreaminess of early 70s soul, the Indications'
sophomore album, 'American Love Call', is planted
firmly in the present, with the urgency of this
moment in time.
The Indications' 2016 self-titled debut was the
product of friends who met as students at Indiana
University in Bloomington, In., recorded for
$452.11, including a case of beer. 'American Love
Call' is instead the record the Indications dreamed
of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals
and a newfound confidence in songwriting.

crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the

The secret gem of Space Disco vibes, Ichisan will be releasing his new EP via Kanto Records. First track of the EP, Megla (The Fog) is some sort of an instrument showcase by the Slovenian producer, who used his analog synthesizers deftly to accompany the funk-house strumming of his bass and electric guitars, both played by the artist himself.

Veter (The Wind) is a five-minute-long journey into the depths of unique and captivating musical mind of Ichisan, daring to be simple yet invoking majestic feelings. Third and fourth track of the EP, Planica and Yassa are more dancefloor oriented tunes that beam with positivity and energy, both have the potential to become anthems of the summer and beyond.

Arranged, recorder and mixed in Ichisan's own studio in Ljubljana, the EP MEGLA is brimmed with phenomenal beats that would not disappoint even the pickiest ears.

It's as deep, jazzy and musically rich as you'd expect, with Daniel flitting between jazz-funk/broken beat fusion, spacey ambient soundscapes, head-nodding hip-hop beats, intergalactic R&B instrumentals, super-smooth beatdown fare and the kind of hushed, glassy-eyed grooves that are best enjoyed while lying flat on your back at six in the morning.

"Lillo" Carillo is a young Italian DJ and producer with several years of background behind. Born and raised near the city of Naples, he settled in Milan from several years where he immediately fit in the circuit of the main local clubs, getting noticed for energy and creativity behind the dj booth. Simultaneously "Lillo" offers his musical skills by working with several Italian fashion brands for which he is a Sound Designe. In 2014 he released his first remix for an EP vinyl with Editors Kutz vol.4, collaborating with manufacturers which are already known in the world of the "Nu-Disco", as Sleazy McQueen and 78Edits, therefor experiencing a strong success that makes him known even outside Italian territory. After a Winter spent in the recording studio, he is finally ready for his new EP on the newly released "Palm Hands Recording", where you can see all the talent and eclecticism of a young Italian producer, a master in juggling house sounds, rnb, disco and funk.

Tree' is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with the
release of this 180g green vinyl reissue, mastered
from hi-res transfers of the first generation master
tapes. This is the first time the album has been
available on vinyl for 20 years.
Mother Earth were part of the second generation
of Acid Jazz groups and were fronted by Matt
Deighton who would later go on to have a critically
acclaimed solo career as well as playing with Paul
Weller and for a short time becoming a member of
Oasis.
'People Tree' was produced over a year by Acid
Jazz boss Eddie Piller and it showed a love of both
soul and the sort of bucolic rock music made
famous by the likes of Traffic in the late 60s. It
featured incredible songwriting that manifested
itself in band favourites 'Jesse' and 'Apple Green'.
Guests on the album include Paul Weller, DC Lee
and The Brand New Heavies' Simon Bartholomew.
The album was a huge success, charting in the UK
and going on to sell over 100,000 copies
worldwide. It is an album that all involved remain
incredibly proud of.

Pre-dotcom electro-funk from the long-running S.F. collective New World Music, gathering the best of their opium-hazed Macola-issued singles on one tidy 12'. Winding keys loosely hug an over-worked 808, as a slapping, watery bass gallops alongside, the looming bummer of the mid-'80s drug war hanging heavy over the whole affair. Intellectual Thinking finds New World Music jamming towards a techno future that never arrived.

Lieutenant Nicholson are French composers and afro-soul singers. The duo are creating a
new vibe with French sounds and mixing it with Jazz, Afrobeat, Electronic and Soul.
T'es qui was their first album released in 2015 and re-released a year later under the
name Remets t'es qui It was result of an intense collaboration that has lasted many
years, on stage and in the studio. They call their music 'Afropean songs', a collection of
Jazzy-Pop melodies, Afro-Soul and Funk arrangements.
This new album has 15 songs, and features a tribute to the famous poet Aimé Césaire on
the title. The Antilles are also honored with creole lyrics, and if you listen carefully - you'll
hear them distilled within the album. La Montagne Pelée's eruption in 1902 is evoked under
the prism of 'August Cyparis', one of the three survivors. The rhythms are tight and
focused, with some Antilles, but also Detroit elements thrown in, accompanied with a strong
horns section, vibraphone and analog drums. There are lots of echoes from the era of Jazz
funk and the lyrical French Mode, mixed with some slightly warmer currents that show their
wider love of modern funk and eclectic tastes.
It is a unique sound, an original recipe, using French wordplay with a universal message.
Last summer, they presented the now critically acclaimed first single 'El Nino', an Afro
Funk gem about climate change, and 'Fontaine', an Afro hit with a great combination of
analog take and electronic dance floor ingredients. With massive support from national
