Freddy McKay later went on to fame, if not fortune, at Studio 1 but this early recording is a much less sophisticated affair, with a back to basics roots rhythm which perfectly suits the song, and with the backing vocals sounding very reminiscent of the Freedom Singers' Studio 1 rarity 'Pyaka'. 'Red Eye Gal' was released on the other side of Freddy's 'Giving You A Try Girl' which appears later in this collection. Both sides were issued back to back on the Blue Beat label, but labelled copies are rare, to say the least!

'Suspicion' was originally a hit in the US for Terry Stafford after the Elvis Presley version had been kept as an album cut before Stafford's success forced its release a couple of years later in 1964. Larry Marshall gives us a spirited rendition, and it sounds very much like it may well have been recorded at the same session as Buster's 'Love Oh Love', with horn section and single guitar adding some spice to the rhythm.

Fresh, sweet soul from Akron's Wesley Bright & The Honeytones. After going through some changes in both personnel and sound, Wesley and the guys have found their groove. This tune represents a new direction for the band, produced by Colemine Records' in-house producer Leroi Conroy at their Loveland, OH studio, these tunes are rough and tough, yet super sweet as well. Maybe that because lead singer Wesley Bright is also a beekeeper. That's right. He's a sweet soul singer that makes honey. You can't make that up.

Charly Kingson, (ps. for Charlie Kingue Soppo) is a legend of afro-funk who managed to shake the entire continent up with his infamous 1978 LP, Born In Africa. Often forgotten when conversations turn to Afro-dance, and the likes of Tony Allen or Fela Kuti, he has been an incredible source of inspiration to many musicians exploring the funkier side of jazz-dance, and this album itself goes way beyond any traditional notion of tropical discotheque. "Born In African" itself is a funky groover for the dancefloor and here is the original 1982 Remix, made by Dutch legendary percussionist Eddie Conard available again, featuring Nimele Bolo' on the flip-side. Released in 1982 on Ariola/Fleet, but also pressed on the original Fleet label. The latter (remarkably with identical catalog-number) never saw daylight. But, we got them all! All in all, this hard to find 12' (at Discogs copies on the Ariola/Fleet label go for around 250 euro) was recently re-discovered, and now you can finally enjoy it again.

When you are a little girl and the huge present placed in front you turns out to be a piano, the possible reactions are 3. A) Terror, clearly. She turned it into furniture, she turned it into a safety valve for her anger and her overflowing energy. In the end this became her favourite playground. Of course, this could only be a give and take relationship. The piano bewitched the little girl, so together they ve spend years and years studying and practicing.

From Athens to Corfu, from Corfu to Helsinki, from soul to jazz and then into the magic world of electronic sound. A long journey for a young and determined to succeed girl. The result curries her name, Lou. Her debut album that describes her way to adult life while struggling to retain the excitement and naivety that describe her. Each track, one (at least) of the intense sentimental situations that she had to face during the last 2 years. Her return to Athens and her new beginning. True love, fake love, small
revolutions. Thoughts on paper converted into sounds, often while being in her room, or inside the studio of the infamous Lefteris Kalabakas.

Lou chooses to speak through a pop version of electronic music and her playful voice. In moments, her jazz background cant be hidden, nor does her need to skip the usual rules and forms, leading to really successful improvisations.

Words can hardly describe in detail all those that the need on the record will reveal. Lou will soon be in the selves of the record stores through Klik records. Be sure to keep an eye on this one

A compilation of some of the very first recordings Mr. Onuora, father of Jamaican dub poetry, made upon release from prison.

Most of them are 7" A and B sides from the late seventies and were recorded at Tuff Gong (Bob Marley's home) studios with Bob's own ridim section, Aston & Carlton Barret, "Touter" Hartvey, "China" Smith et al.
Oku's sharp observations on ghetto living and calls to resist the opression of Babylon are amply matched with some of the wickedest, tightest dub and the sheer level of musicianship elevates this collection way above the many similar reissues of reggae music from the same period.

Unique character and overexcited singer Roland Fatime (also known as Ti L'Afrique) began his career on the Mauritian scene in the early 70's, along with the group Features of Life, with Eric Nelson's saturated electric guitar and Raoul Lacariate's untamed rhythms; Fatime sparked a new raw, funky and explosive Séga style.

His superb Séga-Blues lo-fi tune 'Bal Souki Souki" is reissued on this very 7' along with another nugget buried on the island: 'Soul Reggae Prisonnier' by Ramone, Ti l'Afrique's ex-rival! In the same blues and soul vein, this Séga immerses us in a dramatic story of judicial error and prison environment, which are unfortunately all too familiar with some mauritian musicians!"

Shirley Wahls is known as one of the young pioneers of Gospel music. Singing in the church since the age of three, she began her singing career in the junior choir of the Mt Pleasant Baptist Church under the direction of Ruth Jones. Her professional career began with such legendary groups as "The Argo Singers", "The Ward Gospel Singers" and "The Dorothy Norwood Singers" before trying her hand on secular music around the mid 1960s. Between 1967 and 1976 she had released eight 45RPM singles on different labels such as King, Calla, Smash, Blue Rock, and Giant. The two songs featured on this 45 are probably her funkiest recordings and were long overdue for an official reissue. We'd like to say "Thank You" to Ms. Wahls for giving us the permission to re-release these wonderful songs. This is an essential double-sider which certainly fills any dance floor.

Hans P. and Ernst Ströer are the Ströer Bros. Based close to Munich, Bavaria, they work as composers, arrangers, musicians, producers and authors, traveling between many different musical worlds. Hans plays bass, guitars and piano, Ernst plays all kinds of drums and percussion. The two of them descended from the wildly expanded jazz brew of the '70s. In early 1979 Hans went on a six week tour through eleven African countries as a bass player in Jazz guitarist Volker Kriegel's group Mild Maniac Orchestra. Inspired by his experiences on tour, Hans suggested to do a freestyle album together with Ernst. Avantgarde pianist Wolfgang Dauner's Jazz label Mood Records offered them one week of studio time in the well equipped rooms of an old sugar factory between Christmas and New Years Eve 1981. They spent every minute in the studio, sleeping in the recording room, switching between mixing console and musical instruments. The brothers recorded their own performances and engineered the mixes, drumming, playing bass, guitars, all kinds of percussion and keyboards, singing and yelling. The result was the album 'Fluchtweg Madagaskar' ('escape route to Madagascar') released in 1982. The contrast between African and German lifestyles, underlined by the early 80s tensions between nuclear warheads and the peace movement can be felt at the very core of this album. The fear that Germany could become an atomic battlefield made many young Germans think about emigration. Using a walkman hidden in their pocket, the brothers took numerous field recordings sampled over gripping, heavily accented rhythms. A true independent album, music and early sound design without boundaries nor limits. All songs are remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy includes double sided insert with lyrics, photos and liner notes by the duo. Alternative.

Stating it softly..... Irish music of the 1970's was simply not synonymous with groove music in any way. Avid music aficionado's were totally 'rockist' then (to use an old tag from the same time!) That thread tends to follow with record collecting of vintage Irish music of that time, down to this day. We'll throw a little change into that narrative here - the groove is very rare, and not a little quare! We've looked at the entire recorded music picture of what happened here on this little island into the 1980's, and we're bringing back this -----

We can't tell you that this music comes from a strange place - it comes from a steadily steep and VERY strange place! A small place that was not a little conflicted societally and politically back then - and in every way too, public and private. However it was also a time of great change. Living through it seemed like a rite of passage that moved off from some manner of dark age, and then over forward into a brighter light. Modernity beckoned, and not just with the technology!

So what can you hear here It's no coincidence that this music also makes a similar coming of age. Recording techniques were wholly embraced here, in this era. Late 1970's Irish music saw sound engineering and music production artistry advance from previous, and in a very big way. As studio's moved away from simple and straight audio captures, the music really benefitted. So what can you hear here We're bringing you two sides of this story on two big black twelve inch slates. The first slate has an abundantly sweet clubbier sound of past-funk groove music. The second slate gives you an edgier angle of what the post-punkers got up to, after they too got their hands on the same danceflooring. This is really but only the beginning: There's so much more to come!

'In the summer of 2017, Kees Berkers (Baby Galaxy, YAYAYA) & Yves Lennertz (Bounty Island) started writing and recording songs in a ballet school in a remote village atthe foot of the Plateau of Doenrade near Alpaca Mountain. Being avid record collectors, with both members having a collection spanning almost every musical era and genre, details from many different genres seep through in their music.

Using South East Asian music from the 60 ´s and 70 ´s as a main inspiration, whilst also bringing their individual musical backgrounds and interests to the table, the recording spree resulted in a remarkable set of songs mixing world music, disco, funk and electronic music.'

In 1978 Lord Creator returned to the Black Ark to re-record his in 1968 in Randys studio recorded song, "Such is Life". One of the highlights of the 70s Black Ark era now finally available again on 12".

In exile from his city in Northern Mali, singer/songwriter Ahmed Ag Kaedy returns to the origins of Tuareg folk with sessions of stripped down solo acoustic guitar. Mellow pentatonic notes dance over plaintive vocals, intimate and close mic'd, endearing in their simplicity. Drifting from melancholic ballads and pleas for peace, "Akaline Kidal" is a politically charged and poignant recording for a community ripped apart by division and civil war.
