An icon of Brazilian popular music, Tim Maia was a musical polymath and prolific recording artist best known for introducing American soul to the Brazilian music scene, pioneering the sambalanço style by blending elements of soul, funk, rock, and samba. Maia recorded four self-titled albums for Polydor Brazil, this fourth release from 1973 arguably the best, with its outstanding hits ‘Réu Confesso’ and ‘Gostava Tanto de Você’; ‘Do Your Thing, Behave Yourself’ shows how the soul form fitted him perfectly and ‘O Balanço’ full to bursting with Brazilian flavour. Beloved singer-songwriter-painter-poet Joni Mitchell will turn 75 this year on November 7th . Rhino will start the birthday celebration a few days early by releasing Mitchell's critically-acclaimed 2014 collection 'Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced' on vinyl for the first time as a limited-edition, eight-LP box set.

'Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced' was first conceived as the music to a ballet about love. But after spending 18 months trying to distil everything she'd written about love - and the lack of it - down to a single disc, Mitchell abandoned the ballet. 'I wanted the music to feel like a total work - a new work. No matter what I did, though, at that length, it remained merely a collection of songs,' she wrote in the liner notes to the set.

Undaunted, Mitchell did not give up. Instead, she continued to sequence her songs, determined to prove to herself that what she was after was possible. After two years, she had created a four-act ballet based on the 53 songs that make up this inspiring collection. 'I am a painter who writes songs. My songs are very visual. The words create scenes... What I have done here is to gather some of these scenes (like a documentary filmmaker) and by juxtaposition, edit them into a whole new work,' she explains.

Mitchell organized the music into different thematic acts, which allowed her songs to interact with one another in a whole new way. The process, she says, was a lot like making a film. 'I had forty years of footage to review. Then, suddenly, scenes began to hook up. Then series began to form. Instead of it being an emotional roller coaster ride as it was before - crammed into one disc - themes began to develop. Moods sustained. I was getting there... When this long editorial process (two years) finally came to rest, I had four ballets or a four-act ballet—a quartet. I also had a box set.'

Long-term listeners should find the music familiar but fresh. Newcomers have an adventure before them - a journey into highly-original, harmonically innovative, unusually rhythmic music. Some of the greatest musicians in the world are gathered here - supporting this emotionally charged exploration of love's many faces.

Limited to 5000 individually numbered copies, the set is presented in a hard-bound deluxe folio package. It includes 53 songs on eight 180-gram LPs. Etchings of Mitchell's artwork are featured on four individual album sides, each one signifying the end of an act in the ballet.

It truly is an artist-curated collection. Mitchell selected the material from 40 years of recording. She designed the package, which includes a book containing 53 lyrical poems, six paintings, and an autobiographical text illuminating her recording process. It is funny, mystical, and informative.

Marrying Eugene Record's falsetto alongside Creadel "Red" Jones' animated bass tones it screams flash, feel-good, funk - none more so than when the collective combine for those delectable vocal harmonies. Leaning against a wall, his shirt unbuttoned to his navel and cradling a tumbler of something strong and sophisticated, Tony Igiettemo looks every bit the smooth talking 80s gent. When you put Hot Like Fire on the turntable and drop the needle, however, it is immediately clear that Smooth Tony is also a little bit freaky. Sirens, slap bass, squelchy synths and a titchy high hat that just won't give up, Hot Like Fire is a cosmic call from a dance floor on the far side of the universe. Produced by John Malife - the go-to man in Nigeria when you wanted your funk freaky - it's driven by a heavy low end that compels you to move. 'Baby You Can Do It' is Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' via a sweaty Nigerian dance floor. 'I Feel So Good' has a Kool & The Gang vibe, albeit with a freaky, warbling synth. And 'Hot Like Fire' is a strange reggae/funk fusion, fuelled by the righteous herb. 'We Are One' and 'Africa Must Unite', meanwhile, are post-disco, reggae-tinged calls for African Unity. 'Rock Your Baby' is the album's most relentless dance floor banger and sums up its ethos best. Clap your hands everybody and get down on it. On People of the Sun, Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity. "I'm thinking about where we came from," says Strickland, "and how that clashes and goes hand in hand with what we've created here as Black Americans." The result is an album that's busy and beautiful, inventive and contemplative, an amalgam of influences from West Africa (griot culture, Afrobeat, percussion) and America (post-bop, funk-soul, beat music) performed in the key of revelation. Zapp salutes the late Roger Troutman on 'Zapp VII: Roger & Friends'. The album continues the band's 40-year legacy of funk with special guest appearances by Bootsy Collins, Frankie J., Tuxedo, Kurupt and Snoop Dogg.

Back in 1978, four brothers out of Dayton, Ohio - Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry Troutman - formed the electro-funk band Zapp with the single-minded purpose of getting people out on the dance floor. Their 1980 self-titled debut, produced

by Bootsy Collins and with input from P-Funk founder George Clinton, went gold and their influential hit single, 'More Bounce to the Ounce', would later be sampled by the next generation of rappers and hip-hop stars, including

EPMD, The Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Snoop Dogg, among many others. Now the funkateers are back with 'Zapp VII: Roger & Friends', which celebrates the 40-year legacy of the band while paying homage to the creative genius

of Roger Troutman. With Roger's signature talk box and synth bass lines in full effect on tunes like 'Rock Ya Body' (featuring Mr. Talkbox), 'Shy' (with Tuxedo), 'Make It Funky' (with Bootsy Collins), 'Red & Dollars' (with Snoop

On the making and meaning of 'Cloak', Rakei says:

"It was close to midnight. I found myself silently standing on a beach in Piha, staring at the stars. I'd never seen the stars like that before. There was a stillness and oneness that resonated with me. I finally came to terms with the insignificance of "us" and set myself on a quest of self-discovery through music and meditation. It was a war against my pre-conditioned mind, but one I was willing to fight.

I, like many others, was enslaved by reactionary thought and emotional cause. I lived life through the projection of my ego. My ego would feed off negative emotions, public perception, expectation and a need to be somewhere I wasn't. It was through a conversation I had with myself, where I realised I had an ability to control it. This opened my mind to the concept of duality and my second self.

There is a deep space within us, usually cloaked by our emotions. A stillness. The more we delve, the faster we can re-wire our mind and un-learn all that we have been force fed. Shed your Cloak."

After the release of his critically acclaimed 2014 sophomore EP, Groove Curse, Rakei left Brisbane for the UK. He soon caught the attention of perennial UK electronic chart-toppers, Disclosure and Sam Smith, further growing his fan base and reputation as a talent on the rise. His co-written track Masterpiece' went on to close Disclosure's Grammy-Nominated sophomore album, Caracal, alongside featured artists NAO, Gregory Porter, Miguel, The Weeknd and Lorde.

Rakei's since performed solo across Russia, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Dubai - as well as selling out four London shows and receiving a personal invite to play Gilles Peterson's Worldwide stage at 2015'sOnBlackheath Festival. With UK supports for Caracal-comrade NAO, fellow soul-man Jamie Woon and Fat Freddy's Drop under his belt - not to mention headlining Annie Mac Presents live series - 2016 is set to be a huge year for Rakei.

Lance Ferguson's Raregroove Spectrum is a collection of newly recorded versions of classic funk, soul, jazz and latin vinyl rarities, which features some of Melbourne's finest musicians across the album, including past and present members of The Bamboos, The Putbacks and Hiatus Kaiyote.

This 2 track single provides just a hint of what delights the full Raregroove Spectrum album contains - Lance explains that much of the inspiration for the re-works comes from his experience as a DJ; "Some of these versions can almost be looked at as DJ re-edits, sometimes we're extending what may be a really short track into something longer, or teasing out the elements in a song that really make it work on a dance-floor. It's essentially what someone does with a club re-edit, except we went the extra step and re-recorded the whole thing with a live band".

First up is a reinterpretation of a super obscure deep funk acetate 45 released by Keb Darge, Egg Roll - the follow on track is Lance's take on The Soul Vibrations The Dump.
The forthcoming album reaches further - and includes James Mason's 'Sweet Power, Your Embrace' as a sun-drenched Samba, or Anderson Paak's sure shot tune 'Am I Wrong' given an 1980's style Boogie/Jazz Funk makeover to the epic, widescreen Jazz-Funk of Pleasure's 'Joyous' - Rare Groove Spectrum provides new perspectives on the obscure to the well-loved, from old-school to new sounds - this is rare grooves re-grooved... beautifully.

To coincide with Expansion's release of Leon's two iconic Elektra albums, back to back on one CD, two signature tracks have been brought together here on 7' single. Outside of all the great work Leon contributed to other artists, notably Marvin Gaye, both 'Why I Came To California' and 'Rockin' You Eternally' are songs he is best remembered for as a solo artist. The love of Leon and both these songs keep Leon performing through to this dates, including nights at Ronnie Scotts in London last year. Leon continues to record beyind these 80s records, and Expansion have been honoure d to represent his music over the years with reissues, compilations and new recordings.

Since 1982 'Looking Up To You' has become one of the signature tracks of the modern soul world and played out regularly at events to this day. It is co-written by Leon Ware with Zane Grey (of Grey & Hanks) and produced by Webster Lewis, all giants in this music genre. The song has also been much sampled, most notably by Zhane (Hey Mr. DJ), Ortega Cartel (Miami Vice), Yusher (Gorodskie Uzory) and three this year alone by Skule Toyama (To You), Jericho Jackson (Seventeen) and Saint Duck (Bamboo). This 7' version has also become more in demand, as too the B side 'Tell Me Why', both condensed to four minutes. Michael Wycoff was from Los Angeles and worked with Stevie Wonder on 'Songs In The Key of Life' prior to his three albums for RCA
