Electronic prism-pusher Zuli explores themes of identity, both hyperlocal and global, in 'Terminal', his singular and definitive artistic statement for Lee Gamble's UIQ Expanding his sound to
encompass melancholic ambient composition and grimy rap from prominent Egyptian MC, Abyusif, as well as newcomers Abanoub, Mado $am and R-Rhyme, and mysterious Mecca-based vocalist MSYLMA, 'Terminal' finds Zuli drawing upon a multiplicity of personal experiences in a concerted effort to upend preconceptions of what an Egyptian artist should' sound like.
In Zuli's own words: In a world that feels like it's regressing into tribalism, many of us who don't fit into any one specific group identity feel sidelined at best. When people talk to me, whether it be the press or peers in the scene I operate in, I am often approached with a preconceived notion of pretty much everything from my influences to and tastes to my politics and lifestyle, solely based on my nationality. It is a caricature that has proven very marketable, one that makes for a more interesting read/conversation/booking, apparently, than a multi-faceted (hence unique) human personality just like each and every one of us.'
Across the 14 tracks of 'Terminal', the Cairean artist smartly unpackages and dissolves those lazy pre- or misconceptions by forming his own, syncretic musical language. Meshing the rhythmic grammar of hip hop and club styles with the Arabic dialects of his MCs and vocalist and the free syntax of ambient music, he dissolves and undermines outmoded ideas of exotification, presenting an image of himself that's more akin to the reality of Cairo and the sci-fi idea of P.K.D's scramble suits than any cliche conjured by music media. With controlled aggression and a gauntleted grasp of chaos, Zuli serves big highlights in vocal pieces such as the opener 'Nari', featuring all the MCs entangled in a noxious noise rap clash, which smartly contrasts the haunting plangency of MSYLMA's lament on 'Kollu I-Joloud'.
But the vocal only account for half o fate album, and Zuli really comes into his own on cuts such as the sparring grime instrumental 'Bump' and the sawn-off junglism 'Wreck', and the album's more delirious moments, like the poly-chromatic designs of 'He's Hearing Voices' and the heat-warped geolocators diffused into the ambient keen and astral jazz flourishes of 'Follow Your Breath'.

DJ Shadow has shared the artwork for his anticipated live album and film, Live In Manchester: The Mountain Has Fallen Tour.  Recorded at a sold out Albert Hall in Manchester, England, the release (out 13th July on Mass Appeal Records) is now on vinyl, CD, and digitally.

More than 30 years later, it has become an essential of the genre and is now celebrated with this overdue rerelease.

Along with the remastered original version, the German label, Ground Control, is proud to present a package of fresh remixes from renowned artists of the current international Electrofunk scene—including Sweden's Blotnik Brothers; Dynamik Bass System out of Germany and dutchman DJ Overdose. CODY BLACK was born and raised in Cincinnati in the shadow of King Records where he cut this landmark Northern Soul 45 'I'm Slowly Molding' in 1968. However, it didn't impact on the UK soul scene until the mid-Eighties when, at last, it finally hit at the ground-breaking 'Top Of The World' club in Stafford. Still a mainstay of the All-Nighter scene to this day and commanding prices in the region of $1,000. Black recorded a string of 45s for as many labels including the highly prized 'It's Our Time To Fall In Love' on 'GIG' and the sublime 'Mr Blue' on 'D-Town'.
CHARLES SPURLING was a fellow Cincinnati music hustler working as an A&R man at King Records when he cut this pounding Northern Soul dancer in 1967. AWESOME!

Cool Out Sun are an afrobeat hip hop SUPERGROUP. Made up of players who have their own things going on but still needed this focus to put this out. At a time when hip-hop was determined to snap your neck, a young, hip trio from Brooklyn (by way of Seattle, Philly, and Brazil) conspired on an uncommonly smooth new sound and freaky way of speak, a titanically chill expression of Black bohemia loaded with jazz idiom and a subversive Marxist bent—and pushed it worldwide via an undeniable crossover hit.

Digable Planets' 1993 debut, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), unexpected to all involved, produced a massive radio hit in Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)', which won the 1994 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group. Unduly lumped into an alternative rap' subgenre they chafed at, the Dig Plans were dismissed by some as one-hit wonders, coming out of nowhere, but the Digable Planets concept, and what became Reachin', had been in the works for close to five years, as group leader Ishmael Butterfly' Butler wrote music and soaked up game in multiple cities, navigating the industry of hip-hop's golden age.

In the end, Butler, Mary Anne Ladybug Mecca' Vieira, and Craig Doodlebug' Irving came together to create a seamlessly articulated vision of urbane hiphop cool with an uncommonly literary bent that subtly pushed the hip-hop genre's frames of reference and added breadth to rap music's burgeoning political philosophy. Drawing on inspiration from Butler's jazzbo father, the Black Panthers, Jose Luis-Borges, the Last Poets, and Jimi Hendrix, Reachin' posited a theory of universal beats', narrated by three unearthly MC's that had split to Earth to resurrect the funk', assuming curious, arthropodic aliases—a nod to the natural collective action of the insect world. In just four years the crew would record two beloved and ambitious LPs before disbanding.

Out of print on wax domestically since 1993, Reachin' captures one of the last gasps of rap music's jazzy, upbeat adolescence in the early 90's—those warm, blissed-out grooves every bit as slick as when they were laid way back when. The first release on a new label: Pura Vida Sounds founded by Guts, in conjunction with Heavenly Sweetness. El Tipo Este is a pioneer of Hip Hop in Cuba and Al Quetz, a leading French beat maker.

This canny combo have drawn from the local musical currents, absorbing Afro-Cuban sounds, adding the freedom of jazz, the metronome of hip hop and a healthy bass shake of neighbouring island Jamaica.

For Cubans, El Tipo Este is the pioneer of all things hip-hop. As founding member of Obsesion, one of the nation's most notable hip hop exports. Early champions of his music included Gilles Peterson, who selected a track

to include in his 'Havana Cultura; New Cuba Sounds' compilation. Hot off the heels of this, El Tipo Este was enlisted to assemble the full band of musicians for the Havana Cultura tour. This unit played stages across Europe, USA and

closer to home in Latin America, and in turn this led to collaborations with The Roots and Mos Def For this long player, El Tipo Este he has enlisted beat maker France's Al Quetz to carry his rhymes. Originally known as Quetzal, Al Quetz is a crucial figure in

the world of beat making. A sound scientist whose cut, loop, program, paste compositions has seen him collaborate with the likes of Onra, Guts, La Fine Equipe and Milk Coffee & Sugar.

HERBERT HUNTER will be forever worshiped by the UK Northern Soul scene for his anthemic 45 'I Was Born to Love You', recorded in the home of country music, Nashville, in 1967. Sometimes things are just meant to be and they collide in perfect harmony. 'I Was Born To Love You' is a case in point. The perfect lyric - 'I Was Born To Love You, You Were Born To Tear My Heart Apart' - the perfect beat, and perfect timing as it crashed onto these shores in the summer of '76 when Northern Soul was at its zenith and Wigan Casino owned the All-Nighter scene! But, Hunter is no one-trick pony, as his list of collectable 45s bears testament, not least 'Happy Go Lucky', also on Spar. Hunter was part of Ted Jarrett's roster of artists and, under Jarrett's stewardship recorded a string of cover versions under the pseudonym Leroy Jones for the neighbouring budget label 'Hit'. He learnt much of his trade from established artists and label mates such as Gene Allison who he toured with as minder and nursemaid, due to Allison's drink problem. Often, when they arrived a venue, Allison was too drunk to perform and Hunter would step in for him.
For our B-side we've chosen a lesser known, but no less wonderful and gritty Northern Soul dancer 'I Know The Feelin'' by THE JADES. Currently very much in demand with a mint copy selling earlier this year for over $900. We know little about The Jades who recorded this incredible slab of up-tempo soul for Ted Jarrett's Poncello label in 1964 featuring, of course, Herbert Hunter's booming lead vocal.

A brilliant feel good modern soul disco tune where he lusts for the sultry "Candy" She certainly was a woman In demand with songs by Brothers of soul and later on the famous Cameo tune!

Featuring songs sampled by Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Gwen Stefani and Beyonce Knowles to name just a few, this mixtape of renditions will surely have some songs perfectly catered to your needs.

Another sure shot double sider out the Now-Again catalogue, until now both tracks were album only and both pure club killers. I smashed these back in the day; I remember listening to it from Jazzman Geralds collection and was blown away. I went right out and found the LPs which took a little time even then when there were fewer people after them. A couple of years after that 'Kashmere' was dropped on funky 16 corners comp Egon put together, and the cat was out the bag. Anyway back to the music, for those who don't know, Conrad O. Johnson of Kashmere High School, Houston Texas, created the Kashmere Stage Band turning it into one of the most fierce unbeatable high school bands in the national championships, the recordings here are my two favorites out of many. Don't miss out on the 2011 Documentary Thunder Soul which reunites the band with Conrad O. Johnson over 30 years down the line.

PATTI JO was a Nashville teen when she cut this, original, version of Curtis Mayfield's song 'Make Me Believe In You'. She still resides in Nashville today but has remained somewhat of an enigma. One thing is for certain, if the quarter of a million YouTube views are anything to go by, this is one mighty mighty slab of pure funk/northern/rare groove SOUL! The master was produced by Curtis Mayfield for Scepter Records in 1973 and released on their Wand imprint. Reissued here for the first time under the Scepter logo and coupled with another Mayfield song 'Stay Away From Me' on which Patti delivers a stunning performance on the song that Mayfield originally cut with Major Lance.

SHIRLEY WAHLS had a remarkably short lived solo recording career for someone with such a strong, emotive, deep soul voice. However, her debut single for King Records has to be regarded as one of the greatest double-header Northern Soul 45s of all time. When Shirley's voice kicks in at around 15 seconds you know, in that spine-tingling instant, that you're listening to something very special. At the hands of producer Bill 'Bunky' Sheppard Shirley delivers an incredibly emotional performance straight out of the church where she was somewhat of a star working with the likes of the Argo and Ward Singers. And the B-side is equally stunning!

We've wanted to put this EP on wax since the day we finished it, however due to time, space, and the nature of the universe it took a bit longer than we'd hoped.

To make up for that, we went back into the lab and revisited the Static Methods EP songs, but we brought in some help. A motley collection of bright shining stars, our friends and peers from Melbourne's (Narrm's) music world have reinterpreted Skomes' beats.

Official Mr Bongo reissue of the ultra-rare album by 'Super Elcados'. A fusion of heavyweight Nigerian funk, soul & disco, originally released by EMI Nigeria in 1976. The 'Super Elcados' (and 'Elcados' on other recordings) recorded three albums in the mid and late-70's, this is their first. 'Tactile Living' is the second offering from the mysterious cinematic soul group 'The Pro-Teens'. After their first release 'Tumultuous Times' (released in June 2017), the Teens quickly followed it up with their second release in December. 'Tactile Living' is whackier, spookier and wider in it's arrangements, introducing the Vibraphone and Soprano Saxophone. With Tracks like 'Snead' which delve into their Eitho Jazz inspirations, and 'Professional', going down a spicier Exotic journey, you won't be disappointed with this little teenage sojourn.

The Pro-Teens are a band of highly professional teenagers. Forming in their early tweens this gang of humbled youth were discovered by a rich entrepreneurial neighbour who heard them jamming in their Dad's garage and loved it so much that she signed a deal 'then-and-there' for 2 albums. With funds in their pocket and a youthful naivety under their wings they pounced on the opportunity to record their debut LP 'Tumultuous Times'.
