A follow up to their 2015 debut with Ninja Tune, Richard and Sheila Ellis' sophomore effort, The Cleansing,' exists in the folds, shaking the categorization of a single genre or label by casting echoes of Billie Holiday and Antonio Carlos Jobim atop opaque shades of Debussy and Edgar Allen Poe. Elements of Jazz and Bossa Nova, accented by striking vocals and enigmatic spoken-word poetry, display a command of the power of contrast. Steady repetitiveness of the instrumentations throughout the record anchor haunting, and often winding, vocal melodies, lyrical themes revolve around both optimistic abstraction and stark reality. These juxtapositions are reinforced by the dual nature of the album itself: Side A, Shades of Reverie, is driven by a sense of hope plucked into existence by embers of acoustic guitar, while Side B, Tones of Clarity, is best defined by dramatic, Bernard Hermann-esque orchestration and soaring vocal performances. While the casual listener may be (understandably) distracted by the graceful marriage between instrumentation and vocal cadence, each song holds its own poetic merit. Singer and lyricist Sheila Ellis' masterful penmanship develops a crucial dimension to the album, rendering Cleansing' a deeply personal, outwardly introspective listen. Spanning thirty-eight minutes over eight compositions, the entire record is a warm, bold stroke on an aural canvas, effortlessly moving through embracing melodies and divine soundscapes.

10 years after Blu and Exile released their magnum opus Below the Heavens, the California duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. In the Beginning: Before the Heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems - the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. Their third collaboration follows 2012's Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and is slated for an October release. In The Beginning: Before the Heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of Blu and Exile's creativity at the time. The album has guest appearances from familiar names like Dr. Oop, Donel Smokes, Aloe Blacc, and Blame One. While Soul Provider,' Another Day,' and Party of Two' appeared on Blu's Lifted EP, the majority of these songs showcase Blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status ( Constellations'), getting radio play ( On the Radio'), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world ( You're Gonna Die Someday'). Exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and DJ scratches. In addition to releasing In The Beginning: Before the Heavens for their fans, Blu and Exile are continuing their celebration of Below the Heavens with an anniversary tour. After such a huge turnout for the duo's Below the Heavens anniversary show at the Regent Theatre in L.A. in July, they decided to take the live experience on the road with Dag Savage, Choosey, and Cashus King.

MAGMA, one of the most influential of all French bands, will release the Retrospektï 3xLP collection, including Retrospektï Volume I & II and Retrospektï Volume III via Southern Lord .

The collection will be made available as a limited pressing of 1500 hand-numbered copies, remastered by Brad Boatright, including original artwork by Eva Nahon, also including the classic comic strip by Solé, Dister, and Gotlib depicting MAGMA's trials and tribulations.
 
The first ten years of MAGMA were celebrated on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris. This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, the Retrospektï I & II double-LP and Retrospektï III LP. Issued first, Retrospektï III comprises three titles. "Retrovision" is a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa, and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section. There is a supercharged version of "Hhai," in which the trio of Lockwood, Paganotti, and Widemann works miracles. And finally, "La Dawotsin," where, in a more muted register, the voice of Christian Vander triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.

Recorded, like Retrospektï III, during the soirees at Olympia in June 1980, Retrospektï I & II is an absolutely fundamental album in which "Theusz Hamtaahk" -- the first movement of the trilogy of the same name -- is presented for the first time. The second and third movements, "Wurdah Itah" and "Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh," were of course already well known. Although played in concert since 1974, Christian Vander had waited for years before recording it for posterity as he wanted every note to be as beautiful, magical, essential and definitive as possible. It is with the same respect for his music that he releases here the most successful version of "Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh," considered outstanding on account of two incredible improvisation from Bernard Paganotti and Didier Lockwood. Klaus Blasquiz, who did not perform on Retrospektï III, is the lead vocalist on this version - and justifiably so, since he was indeed the MAGMA singer who first sang these two masterworks.
 
There's no doubt about it, MAGMA has left a legacy of music that defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, operating instead in a realm of their own creation. Southern Lord looks forward to being part of their ever-evolving story...

The Mighty Diamonds are one of the most famous vocal groups to come out of the Jamaican Reggae scene.
Their perfect harmonies ride over the wholesome and Garveyite influenced lyrics to such great effect that they will always evoke memories of that time and place, but also like all great music never seems to date.

The Mighty Diamonds consist of Donald 'Tappy' Shaw (lead vocals) Fitzroy 'Bunny' Simpson and Lloyd 'Judge' Ferguson providing those fantastic harmonies.
They began their recording career working with producers Stranger Cole and Rupie Edwards but found their breakthrough success with producer Joseph 'Joe Joe' Hookim at the legendary Channel One Studios recording 'Hey Girl' and covering two foreign tunes namely 'Country Living' (The Stylistics) and 'Stoned Out of Mind' (The Chi-lites) which suited their vocal styles perfectly.

The vocal group also cut tracks with other famous producers of the time Joe Gibbs ,Gussie Clarke and Mr.Tappa Zukie of which we focus this release on.On listening, these tunes work perfectly with harmonies weaving together and lifting the songs to another level.
The group also leave some room for a history lesson in the shape of 'Morgan the Pirate' and the thought provoking 'Do You Want to Spend Your Time Wasting Time'.

Mr Muthafuckin' eXquire is back and he's finally self-released his first project, from a series of EP's, called Brainiac'. The EP showcases the lyricists trademark wordplay and features a guest appearance from Meyhem Lauren with production from The Alchemist as well as some of eX's other collaborators like CONSTROBUZZ, Parallel Thought, Bowery Beats and Canya Reial. After the untimely passing of his partner Sean Price in 2015, Rock, of legendary Brooklyn hip-hop duo Heltah Skeltah, releases his first ever solo album, Rockness A.P. (After Price). The best R&B songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of, Sam Dees has written songs for countless artists, including Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, George Benson, the Temptations, Teddy Pendergrass, Millie Jackson, Jackie Wilson, the Manhattans, Regina Belle, KC & the Sunshine Band, Willie Clayton, and many others. He's also a pretty fine singer, having recorded for the Chess, Atlantic, Polydor, and SSS labels, and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s. His 1975 Atlantic album The Show Must Go On has long been regarded by Southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. Sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced Curtis Mayfield (in both style and theme), Dees sings with assurance, wisdom, passion, and a whole lot of soul here. Songs like "Child of the Streets", "Troubled Child," & "What's It Gonna Be," share Mayfield's commitment to social commentary, and Dees knows his way around a love song, too. It's absolutely essential.

Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of New York with the release of Enta Da Stage in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-filled rhymes to tear down the world's unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when Enta Da Stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising.Earlier this year, Fat Beats Records presented the definitive Enta Da Stage box set, which was reissued for the first time across three formats (6xLP, 3xCD and 3xCassette). Baker's Dozen ventures to Japan to welcome our next featured producer, Budamunk. I started listening to Hip Hop in the 90's. My interest grew slowly until it became a collection of records, CDs and taped VHS. This then evolved into experiments, sampling and chopping WAVs on free versions of WaveLab. In 2003 this became an MPC 2000XL. I was living in Los Angeles at the time so I had started going to shows and hanging out with people who shared similar interests. We all began to gather and learn together. Records became beats which became freestyle sessions, songs, laughter and much coughing. After several years I returned to Tokyo and it's been 10 years since I have been back. I still make beats the same way. Going off of feeling I would get when I hear a record. The selection of sounds has changed slightly in accordance with my current environment. Still mostly sample-based but adding new and old tools have become part of my process. Just continuing to create music my body and spirit needs to feel good.'

This essential LP edition includes Jackson's magnificent third LP,
Encore!, which was originally issued in the early Sixties by the Wand label (which was a subsidiary of Scepter Records), and has been long unavailable on vinyl. It opens with Tell Him I'm Not Home,' a stinging tale of romantic rejection that became the LP's biggest hit and one of its brightest moments, complete with a powerful backing vocal courtesy of Doris Troy. Jackson's rich baritone vocals were the perfect focus for the sophisticated uptown New York soul that became the trademark sound of Wand. He was widely respected on the R&B and early soul scene, scoring hits with other great songs such as Tomorrow,' King of the Mountain,' Getting Ready for the Heartbreak,' Invisible,' and Go on Yak Yak' (the latter was co-written by Jackson and Luther Dixon).

Before the release of their self-titled debut, the six-man collective of Crash Crew had already released several singles around New York City. Stories go that one of their first, "High Powered Rap" would later be copied by Sugar Hill Records' own Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and form the basis for their first national hit "Freedom", almost certainly leading to animus between the two groups. Regardless, Crash Crew also ended up on Sugar Hill Records, and released their full-length debut through the label in 1984. Crash Crew, along with Treacherous Three, T La Rock, and the aforementioned Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, would become vanguards of the first true generation of early hip-hop music, with Crash Crew in particular being exceptionally good at party anthem raps. Their debut meanwhile would find new life as a crate digger's dream, and prime sample material for De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Black Eyed Peas, and Cut Chemist.

Jimmy Witherspoon was a singer and songwriter who regularly defied rote categorization. The rudiments of his vocal approach were based primarily on the blues. However, over a career that spanned five decades he sang in a range of styles that ran the gamut from R&B and gospel to pop. His deep and mellow voice and impeccable taste also made him a successful jazzblues crossover artist. More than any other male singer, Witherspoon straddled the line between blues and jazz, becoming an integral participant in the history of both of these classic genres of American music.

This essential LP edition includes the blues giant's sensational live album, At The Monterey Jazz Festival, which was originally released in 1959 on the HiFi Jazz label. This long play is filled with superb tracks featuring tremendous solos and great accompaniment by Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Roy
Eldridge, Woody Herman and Earl Hines, among others. During the course of the set Jimmy Witherspoon sang at Monterey', recalled journalist Ralph J.
Gleason, there were many moments that remain in my memory. Most of them are on this album. For instance, there's the great introduction Earl Hines plays on 'Ain't Nobody's Business' ...Roy Eldridge's meted trumpet on the same tune ...'Spoon crooning 'rain, rain' later in the song and then Ben Webster's
magnificent solo. Ben started to blow that solo and a thrill ran through the audience.'

2010 Nems debut album Prezident's Day' was released on Creative Juices Music. Nems was making a name for himself as a battle emcee and personality. Les Mangelepa helped drive the East African evolutionary spur of one of the greatest musical art forms, African rumba during the 1970'a.

(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay' will be released as a 7' single on gold vinyl to mark the golden anniversary of 50 years since the single's release. The track continues to transcend generations, holding the distinction of being one of a handful of songs from the '60s to have over 100 million streams on Spotify.

A detailed reproduction of the original mono single, it features the B-Side Sweet Lorene,' is branded as a Volt release, and comes in a die-cut sleeve like those used by Atlantic Records, which was distributed Stax/Volt Records at the time.

This single includes the rare, original version of the song, which is shorter and with Redding's vocals noticeably lower in the mix. This original version was quickly pulled after a brief release and replaced with the version that the world has known ever since. This anniversary 7-inch marks the first time the original version has appeared on vinyl since the initial release in 1968.
