Paper Tiger - Sonic Boom Head Zoom
WAHCASS001
Wah Wah 45s
Cassette13.11.201713.NOV.17

Hip-HopInstrumentalBeatsBreak-BeatDrum&Bass

Wah Wah 45s are very proud to announce their first foray into the format of the future-retro fan - the cassette. And who better to deliver our debut release on this cult medium, than our very own electronic beat makers and hip hop nerds, Paper Tiger. Over the last four years, the Leeds and London based crew have been quietly pasting together some of the more interesting and subversive off-cuts and live interludes that were recorded around their two LP releases.

In 2013 Paper Tiger released their long awaited debut album Laptop Suntan on Wah Wah 45s. After a collection of head-turning EPs, featuring collaborations with leftfield electronic and hip-hop artists including Foreign Beggars, Homeboy Sandman, Joshua Idehen, Archie Pelago and more, the time for their full-length project finally arrived. In order to whet the listener's appetite for this stunning debut long-player, Wah Wah 45s shared the first instalment of Sonic Boom Head Zoom, a glimpse of the full Paper Tiger live band in action. With hints of what you would experience on the record, plus exclusive bonus material, this twenty-minute live digital beat tape was by turns hypnotically head-nodding, experimental and downright hilarious (shout out to all Emmerdale lovers).

In the words of the band's electronics expert and woodwind player Greg Surmacz: "As we were completing our album, we came up with the idea of recording some live interludes - our live band set-up and instrumental recording/sampling are a big part of what we do and we wanted to give a proper nod to that on the record.

We set up in a studio without much of a plan and ended up recording a few hours of jamming - all live, all completely improvised on the fly. There was an abundance of material, some of which we will sample and develop into fully-fledged tunes, but we thought it'd be nice to compile a short mix-tape of some of the highlights. You can also hear the album's interludes in their original context."

In the autumn of 2013, the band went on to release a remix record, Sultan Ant Pop. As well as receiving contributions from some of their favourite producers (LV, Werkha, Murder He Wrote, Bambooman and more), they decided to record more brand new music to mould it into a coherent listening experience.

As a result, Sonic Boom Head Zoom 2 was born. Clocking in at over 30 minutes, it was a deeper, darker and weirder affair than its predecessor despite being produced in the same way - 100% live, totally improvised and recorded in a single day. There were head-nodding grooves, bizarre and hilarious rhymes from MC Raphael Attar, space-jazz excursions and much more.

After a short hiatus, in 2015 Paper Tiger began work on their second album, Blast Off. Having grown in confidence and stature as a live band, they were keen to fully integrate their live sound into the new record. They spent a day at their regular spot in Leeds, ATA Studios, and recorded over five hours' worth of ideas, sketches and improvisation.

They ended up with an abundance of material, some of which was incorporated into the sound of Blast Off. However, there was still plenty of music left over to compile a new entry in their live mix-tape series. Clocking in at around 30 minutes, Sonic Boom Head Zoom 3 retains the SBHZ premise - 100% live, totally improvised and recorded in a single day - but is more adventurous and diverse than ever. There's everything from Krautrock to neo-soul in there, non-sequiturs aplenty from MC Raphael Attar and the usual leftfield beat music.

In late 2015 Paper Tiger went back into the studio in order to capitalise on the creative momentum from the Blast Off project. As with previous sessions at their regular home of ATA Studios, there was a wealth of material generated from a single day of recording. Much of this provided the starting point for what will become their third album, due for release in 2018, but in anticipation of that they gave us Sonic Boom Head Zoom 4.

Like previous volumes, SBHZ4 is a beat tape made up of live jams, totally improvised and recorded in a single day. This latest set is stuffed full of head-nodding, off-kilter rap beats full of natural swing and groove that you only get with the tightest rhythm sections, pushed into left-field with squiggly synths, curveball sample choices and stoopid-smart similes from MC Raphael Attar. While more focused than the last edition, it's still not averse to the odd jazz freak-out. Just don't mention Whiplash...

The Sonic Boom Head Zoom double-cassette brings all four mix-tapes together on in one place for the first time and is released in limited numbers on November 10th 2017.

Sunnysun - Sunstrumental
RXTXV008
RX:TX
7"-Vinyl10.11.201710.NOV.17

Hip-HopRapInstrumental

Sunstrumental is a double single of two neck breakin', raw, dirty, MPC cuts. It's a nod to the boom-bap school but at the same time also breaks that dogma with fresh current details. Instrumentals that many MCs would love to jump on but it's even better they didn't.

Sunstrumental is the first solo vinyl release by Sunnysun, but expect this to be just the beginning of what is to yet to come. Sunny is an all-round player: established as an MC (Croatian Freestyle Vice-Champion), he lately shifted his focus more on studio work and DJing. He created the first mixtape of exclusively Slovenian rap music Selotejp, his beats underline the lyrics of numerous MCs and appear on compilations like Stiropor, Ctrl N and BTF x rx:tx. All in all, an unorthodox whiz never afraid of gazing into different directions, never limiting himself to just one side of hip hop. Truly one of the key players, linking the various Clans, Posses, Crews and Cliks.

These are his beats.

The Frightnrs - More To Say Versions
DAP048-1
Daptone Records
12inch21.01.201721.JAN.17

Hip-HopReggae

The Haggis Horns - One Of These Days
HRLP002
Haggis Records
12inch30.10.201730.OCT.17

Hip-HopR & BSoul

Almost 20 years since they formed The Haggis Horns maintain their premier position at the top table of UK funk/soul bands. Their ever growing fan base, their ability to attract a new younger crowd while maintaining their original following, their release of quailty music on a regular basis and a busy diary of gigs both at home and abroad ensures they're as popular as anytime in their long life.Their storty is well documented elsewhere so no need to dwell on it too much here. Just look at the artists they've worked with and you can see the calibre of the band. These include Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai, Lily Allen, Lou Donaldson, John Legend, The Roots, Martha Reeves and Roots Manuva to name a few.In November 2017 The Haggis Horns Release their fourth studio album since their debut in 2007 and once again it's on their own Haggis Records. It's called "One Of These Days" and as expected, it features the usual heavy funk/jazz-funk dance floor bangers but also a nice mix of other genres, including their first recordings with a rapper, a proper disco/boogie gem and some sweet laid back 70's style soul. The usual Haggis Horns musical stew that showcases all their favourite influences from the soul, funk, hip hop and jazz traditions.

For deep soul lovers check out the title track "One Of These Days" featuring original Haggis Horns "Hot Damn!" vocalist John McCallum. Also try the second single from the album "World Gone Crazy" featuring their other long time singer Lucinda Slim for another slice of deep soul magic. Lucinda also features on lead vocals on the previously mentioned disco/boogie track "New York Beat", a perfect synthesis of jazz-funk guitar licks, analogue keyboard sounds, punchy brass and disco diva harmonised vocals.

There's a new rockier guitar sound on this LP reminiscent of Dennis Coffey's mid 70's b-boy funk instrumentals, especially on "Gonna Be Alright". Talking of b-boys, the band have collaborated with rapper/MC Doc Brown on the first single from the LP, released in summer 2017, the old skool funk/rap/hip-hop block party anthem "Take It Back". He also features on the other hip-hop/funk track "What's It All About". Shades of early Hip-Hop here from 1979/80 back when the first MC's rhymed over music played by live bands, like the dSugarhill Records house band on that label.

"One Of These Days" proves once again why The Haggis Horns are still top after two decades...they write their own songs, they don't follow the crowd, they stay ahead of the curve and they're always willing to take musical risks. And long may it continue

Various - Africa Airways Four (disco Funk Touchdown - 1976 - 1983)
ASVN040
Africa Seven
12inch27.11.201727.NOV.17

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDisco

It's just over 3 years since we launched the Africa Seven label in Paris and London. Our first release back then (Airways One) is still our best seller and had to be repressed 4 times so far. Forty or so releases later it is time to take to the clouds again. Being the unimaginative bunch we are, the fourth installment of our African sky filled musical cornucopia is called African Airways Four (Disco Funk Touchdown - 1976 - 1983). This time around all tunes have the Disco flavour. As ever it's all about the music... the skies are wide and funky and the air is filled with musical goodness. Your flight is about to leave.

Your flight opens with a punchy disco funk assault from Paris based Cameroonian Tala AM. Here with his drive bass and guitar funk riff 1981 stomper "Get Up Tchmassi". Next up and staying with the Cameroonian connection is Eko with "Bowaa Mba Ngebe". The lyrics talk of accomplishing the things in life for your family and yourself. The sweeping strings and gloriously uplifting music matching the sentiments of the words perfectly. Uta Bella began singing in the 60's and by the time disco hit in the 70's she was already established a singer in her native Cameroon, here the locked on groove of "Nassa Nassa" is a perfect snapshot of the sound and the African disco times.

Charly Kingson (cousin of Manu Dibango) is next with his "Nimele Bolo". Recorded in Germany with the cream of Munich's session musicians the bass synth is out in force on this one. Punchy brass, rock solid grooves and jazzy Rhodes add all the right ingredients for a fine disco synth excursion. Next is the musical heavyweight from Cameroon cousin Manu with his 1978 Disco, jazz funk masterpiece "Sun Explosion".

Side two opens with a blast of Elvis Kemayo and his piano and guitar funk bomb "Biram". Next Momo Joseph gives us "Africain". Best known in France as an actor, this disco funk groover was released on his self pressed LP "War For Ground" in 1983. A true gem indeed. Nigerian, ex Funkees member Jake Sollo is next with "Tinni Yanana". Recorded in the UK in 83 its slick and smooth with a hint of "at the car wash" groove. Pierre Didy Tchakounte follows on with his soul funk 'golden years' style groover "Soul Magabe". Produced by one of our favourite Parisian producers Slim Pezin. We close off our journey with the tribal chant disco-funk special from the Monstars "Funny Saga".

Ladies and Gentleman, we have landed at your destination, please remain seated until the aircraft has reached the terminal. We look forward to welcoming you aboard Africa Airways again soon.

Jazzman
2x12inch17.11.201717.NOV.17

Hip-HopR & BSoulPopBluesLatin

- Jazzman Records releases the third volume of its Jukebox Mambo compilation series, artfully selected by DJ Liam Large.

- A journey through the popular American music of the 1950s influenced by exotic rumba and Afro-Latin seasoned rhythm and blues.

- Featuring rarities and unearthed gems from Percy Mayfield, Roy Gaines, Chuz Alfred, Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and many more.

- The twenty-four track compilation comes complete with in-depth track notes and photographs, as well as a deluxe double vinyl edition with gatefold sleeve, and a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10" book set - with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks

Since the release of their first Jukebox Mambo compilation album in 2012, Jazzman Records, with the curatorial expertise of DJ Liam Large, have been opening ears and minds to the delights of Latin-tinged Rhythm & Blues. This, the third release in the series, sticks squarely to the tried and tested formula of its predecessors, combining a crate-digger's passion for the obscure with an ear for instant dancefloor crowd pleasers.

In a congested field of R&B comps, Jukebox Mambo stands out uniquely in shedding light on the era of Latin American and Caribbean influence, a sensual rhythmic shift which continues to be felt in modern music today.

Opener, The Emperor's 'Tough De Times (Things Getting Tough)' is a classic example of Large and Jazzman's idiosyncratic capacity to bring striking singularities to light, a beguiling and seductive blend of jazz, blues and Trinidadian calypso. Other highlights include the slinky rumba-blues of Percy Mayfield's lustful 'Loose Lips', the only known recording by female blues shouter Ethel Boswell on the track 'No More For You', and Chuz Alfred's powerful rendition of the Duke Ellington standard 'Caravan'. Elsewhere, Jukebox Mambo 3 is dominated by virtuosic performances, from the smooth tenor vocals of Roy Gaines to the polyrhythmic swing of the Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and the Syrian-American jazz stylings of Eddie Kochak.

The compilation comes with in-depth track notes and photographs, is available as a deluxe double vinyl tip on gatefold as well as a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10" book set - with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks.

Lovingly compiled, artfully arranged and expertly annotated, Jukebox Mambo Volume 3 is another immersive gaze into an era of musical history that still carries a unique influence today. This one is for the crate diggers and music lovers alike!

Ellas McDaniel (aka Bo Diddley) was a true American original. He originated a rock beat that has been used by everyone from The Who, to Bruce Springsteen, to The Smiths, had a teenaged Marvin Gaye working as his valet, toured with The Clash, and was in a series of popular Nike commercials. Not to mention the fact that, oh yeah, he wrote and recorded some of the most important rock and roll music of the mid 20th-century. And that guitar, that iconic guitar, which is prominently featured on the cover of this classic 1962 LP. This is the first LP to feature his popular female rhythm guitarist sidekick, The Duchess, and while not featuring the chart-toppers of other release is a stunner of classic R&B influenced rock and roll that's essential for any Diddley fan.

2x12inch16.10.201716.OCT.17

Hip-HopHip-Hop

2 LP in gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeve,

Rap was something that just happened to her. Keny Arkana was only twelve when she started writing her first lyrics. Her first contacts with the record business came in 2005. But even before she infiltrated the matrix, Keny released her first opus, L'Esquisse, a fast and furious street album containing the hit 'Le Missile est lancé' produced by Tefa & Masta as well as 'De l'Opéra à La Plaine", a gargantuan freestyle track by twenty writers born and bred on the streets of Marseilles. 12 years after L'Esquisse and 6 years after L'Esquisse 2, Keny releases L'Esquisse 3. A spontaneous, creative, sincere, energetic and meaningful record, with powerful rhythmic and precise arrangements. Even though the record has a mixtape appearance, it hasn't been a botched job, as evidenced by its complex structure and harmony : musical interludes around the four elements, true rap anthems like 'Couleur Molotov' or 'Lejos' and contemporary hits like 'Abracadabra' or 'Freestyle Beatbox' with beatboxer Tressym for an instrumental. Both dark in its lyrics and lively in its energy, Keny's mixtape L'Esquisse 3 reveals again an artist just as we could dream in 2017 : clear-sighted, offensive, touching and inspired. Dear she's been missed!

Originally issued on Kinglsley's own KAB records in '85 and according to Kingsley the release was well received at the time, but due to constraints of international marketing the record remained mostly unknown outside of his homeland. PHIL MISON - CANTOMA - A beautiful piece of work by Steve Cobby. There's something on this wonderful album for everybody.

PAUL MURPHY - CLAREMONT 56 -Really lovely album. Fixing The Shadows is the track for me. I'll be playing this one for sure.

JUSTIN ROBERTSON - Lovely album. A couple of these numbers definitely contenders for my Temple Of Wonders show.

SEAN JOHNSTON - Steve Cobby has to be the most criminally under-rated producers in the UK. This is magical and deserves to reach a much wider audience.

GRANT WILLIAMS - ECLECTICS -The production and high quality of this Album is truly remarkable, the work of one man Steve Cobby. Steve's wealth of musical influences are all over this, the laid-back Jazz Funk-Trip Hop vibes of 'Candle for the Moth'. The Organic Drum and Bass break in 'Rick James dwells in the Abyss'. 'Cherry-Skin Blanket' gives us Balearic Electronica where as 'Babylon on the Hudson' is pure Dub all the way.... "The Track for me is the heady dreamlike affair which is 'The Canyons Of Lower Manhattan'. Saturday nights, Sunday Mornings, Sunsets to Sunrises all bases are covered in this Curious, exceptional and Impressive Album.

PETE HERBERT - MUSIC FOR SWIMMERS - DISCO DEVIANCE - Loving this album from start to finish. I'll slot something into my show on Sonica.

TRISTIAN B WWFM - MAIN MAN AT WORLDWIDE FM & BILERE ROOM -This sounds dope. I would love to play it on Worldwide FM.

CHRIS ORR - ORRIGINAL - Yeh I really rate Steve works.

COYOTE - TIMM SURE Some lovely moments on this LP. The mellow atmospheric musings of Fixing the Shadows and the digital dub delight that is Babylon On The Hudson being the stand outs. Top productions all round.

PIET BLANK - BLANK & JONES - What a great album...love it from the first to the last note! Will feature on our radio shows for sure.

ROBIN LEE - FAZE ACTION - I really love the title of this album. Quite ironic as it's nice chilled vibes.. not too many fast notes hehe. Babylon on the Hudson and The Canyons of Lower Manhattan are early favourites.

JUSTIN PENNEY - GRAFFITI KINGS - What a great album, showcasing his diverse take on all things laid-back. Jenkem is a real favourite. I shall be giving these play on both of my radio shos. I've always been a fan of Steves work since Pork Recordings days.

SCOTT FERGUSON - Superb EP from Steve Cobby. All tracks are brilliant. Very hard to me pick a winner.

GORDON KAYE - Loving Steve Cobbys new album as I have his last 2 albums recently. Babylon on The Hudson is dub bliss, but the whole album is astonishingly good. Steve is major talent, who can turn his hand to many styles, which is very unusual. Jenken is also ace but the Canyons of Lower Manhattan is to of the pile.

TIM RIVERS - KINFOLK - A truly beautiful album and hard to choose to a favourite. My radio show on Brighton FM will be really suited to the style of this album. Looking forward to play it!

Fittingly, the content of Things Are Happening' strays down darker or more cynical paths than its predecessor, and in doing so takes the modern funk ethos as a whole beyond tried and true formulas such as love songs or spiritual anthems. The grooves remain uptempo, the synth work is still warm and percussive. But, there's a heavier story to tell, and greater truths to face. The album opens with the uptempo, lowrider-ready Never Have Too Many Freaks.' Upon first glance it's a hedonistic ode to maintaining multitudes of willing women for carnal conquest, but further listens reveal the story of a man in search of love, let down too many times and thus led away from the pursuit of romance. Look Who's Talkin'' details the strenous nature of socializing as an introvert, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics seated atop a warbly electro-funk instrumental. This theme is explored again, in a more introspective fashion, on the album's closer, They Don't Wanna Leave.' On Better Friend' (feat. Moniquea), XL plays witness to those who would invade social circles for personal gain - an all too common sight in the music business, perhaps foreshadowing a future hip hop album by dropping a few bars before the song sizzles to a close. Him and Zackey Force Funk team up on Paradise Of Pavement,' an anthem for the highs and lows of living in LA, framed by cosmic chords and grinding synth bass tones. Purple Sheets' resonates with a slow Linn drum bounce as XL's vocoder finally offers a moment of unbridled love/lust, adding a dimension to the album more akin to Tap Water' than anything else on the project. Some might argue that the internalized nature of Things Are Happening'is badly timed, with the hyper-politicized environment we are now living in almost demanding social commentary in art above all else. However, this album is a reminder that, no matter who the president is or what global woes we are facing, we also exist outside of the collective mind and have our own individual stories to tell.

Jahyu Ft. Ras Tinny - Freedom Of Movement
TCR002
Tripedal Crow Records
12inch12.10.201712.OCT.17

Hip-HopReggaeReggae-DubBeatsDubstep

Spreading its wings once more, spiritually aligned within the realms of Dub and Dubstep - imprint Tripedal Crow conjures their second anticipated vinyl release. Geographically based in Hamburg, Germany - label owner and prolific producer JahYu aptly combines the roots heritage of Dub music with traditional Korean, oriental influences - forming the foundation of his signature sound with the message of outernational unity beyond national borders through the release's lyrics. Churning out bass-centered dance music for over half a decade, the talented artist has unceasingly refined his sonic qualities, a certainty, which is further proven to be true with TCR002 - a four-track heavyweight of his collaboration with venerated MC and vocalist Ras Tinny - dubbed 'Freedom of Movement'. With the original 'Again Again', a dub version and two high-grade remixes by the likes of Alpha & Omega and Akcept, this one will be sure to be heard on sound systems all over - version business along a digital bonus track: Alpha & Omega's Dub Version.

Wondrous flute melodies emerge and join the true-to-the-roots rhythm alongside the invigorating chants of Ras Tinny, submerged in low frequencies and skanking chords. Drawn into deep meditation, the resulting soundscape serves to illuminate JahYu's respect- and skillful application of his oriental heritage. Firmly woven into the contemporary roots scene, Alpha & Omega picks up the pace with their version - switching up the bassline, routing the original through the black box that is their quality dubwise production, while keeping the arrangement true to the original overall. Flipping the record, we're met with an introspective spin on the original. Aligning itself alongside submerged low frequency oscillations, tending to a more modern sonic signature than its A-Side counterpart - enveloped in a melancholic, pensive atmosphere - deep meditation is guaranteed. Version upon version, the track is being followed up with a mighty remix by the proficient hands of emerging NZ artist: Akcept. Warbled sonic introductions and scattered chord reverberations join figurative hands and dance in midst of a driving and ceaselessly forward-stepping bassline, perfectly concluding the spiritual sounds of this 12'.

Hip-HopReggaeReggae-Dub

Dub-Stuy welcomes up and coming producer Blind Prophet for a conscious dub release in collaboration with Russia's Tenor Youthman and Italy's Numa Crew.

Long Island, New York's Blind Prophet makes his debut on Dub-Stuy Records alongside the vocal talents of Tenor Youthman , one of the founders of Russia's Lion Posse sound system. ' Marijuana Burns Capitalism ' is a deep and meditative social statement sure to move the dance and stimulate the heads.

On 'Marijuana Burns Capitalism', Blind Prophet lays down a solid riddim, with a deep driving bassline and a bubbly harpsichord skank, for Tenor Youthman to sing about the liberating properties of hemp in fighting the evils of mass production and capitalism. The result is a simple and effective cut backed by a sparse dub that lets the drums and bass roll out to full effect.

The flip side sees Florence's Numa Crew deliver their own fire for the dance with another straight to the chest dub version that focuses on the bassline and Tenor's unique vocal style.

A 12' for the massive that continues the uplifting sound system music Dub-Stuy is known for.

'As the son and nephew of pioneering UK nu roots dub duo Alpha & Omega — bassist Christine Woodbridge and keyboard player John Sprosen — Ben Alpha Steppa grew up surrounded by sound system and dubplate culture, starting in his mother's womb at Channel One and Jah Shaka shows. In his music the competing influences of nature and nurture cannot be separated. He has grown to become one of the most prolific and inventive dub producers around, absorbing worldwide inputs into his productions without dilution of their constituent parts, most notably with his recent Trigram series. On this set collaborating artists are from Russia, Senegal, Nigeria, Jamaica, Suriname and Brazil, but the true test of all reggae/ dub productions is when they stand alone in the mix, here with the horn driven march of "Concrete Meditation". After releasing his debut album "Paradise" earlier this year to much critical acclaim, B. Bravo has swung back around for yet another trip to this island of cosmic delights, tapping into some of our favorite producers & extended fam for a special 12" to accompany the digital of "Paradise Remixed". The A-Side kicks off with Fool's Gold producer Sammy Bananas turning the squelchy funk of "Freak It" into a filtered French & Italo inspired funky house monster, perfect for peak time on the dancefloor, while Los Angeles' XL Middleton deliver's a low slung G-Funk & boogie inspired take on the album single "I'm For Real". On the flip, UK producer SMBD (better known as Simbad) turns "Lay It On The Line" a classic 80s synth beast that's been tried & tested around European festivals all summer, while Grandfeather (aka Anton Borin) comes through with a spacey & deep downtempo funk reversioning of "Can't Keep My Hands Off You". Los Angeles-based Adam Mori aka B. Bravo adds a touch of love to every soulful groove he gets his hands on. Following on from the first part of Heatwave remixes, Mike Maurro digs deep into this legendary groups catalogue to bring us another duo of stellar reworkings. This time their Jazz-Funk classic 'The Groove Line' from 1977 gets the MM remix treatment and is backed with their evergreen slow-jam 'Always And forever'. 2 deeper cuts this time but the quality is just as high as Maurro really understands this music and knows what to use and how. Fans of Heatwave will undoubtedly adore these new mixes and people who are new to the group will be amazed they hadn't checked out the legendary Mr. Rod Temperton and his super talented pan-European band of musicians before! Naturally, everyone is welcome to this party....
Another amazing addition from Brookside Records to the ever growing archive of classic Disco, Funk & Soul treats that we, as music lovers, are lucky to experience.
