To gain some grasp of the genesis of this new project, that may seem surprising at first, let's address what both artists have in common, rather that what differentiates them. Internationally recognized masters in the styles, respectively reggae & dub, that they are developing in parallel for almost 20 years, without never really meeting each other, the two protagonists strive to challenge their codes in an ever greater respect to their Jamaican roots: two decades furthering a relentless fight against musical orthodoxy, to the benefit of interbreedings that have always been major contributions to music — and arts in general — History. This is evidenced by jazz and Jamaican traditional music fusion in the case of Harrison Stafford, and notably with his amazing adventure with Groundation, as well as by Martin Nathan countless experimentations, over Brain Damage prolific discography, always digging in more unlikely and audacious directions.

From this unexpected collaboration will stem « Liberation Time » album, an LP that will delight many fans of the two artists' works, all what builds their respective uniqueness being there so well intricated. Harrison Stafford unique voice supports, in a most elegant way, the delivery of a uniting message focused on self-empowerment through music and his universalist vision of Rastafarian faith. Brain Damage writing and production, on the other hand, appear always more subtle and personal, intellectualized yet visceral. Solid compositions, hit melodies and classy dub effects are among assets that will undoubtedly confirm « Liberation Time » as one of the most accomplished collaboration project of this year.

Producer Hans Hu$tle and singer Tahnee Matthiesen met while dancing to D'Angelos music in a club in Munich. Although they already knew each others musical projects, only after this they noticed their common love for dark moods and getting lost in psychedelic spheres.
After nights of endless sessions, listening to Darkside, Portishead, computer noises and fieldrecordings, they started to combine their different approaches of making music for sketches that would later become the Contact" EP. The music on this records feels futuristic and innovative while also obviously drawing from the mentioned influences, best heard in the first single - We All : A psychedelic, moody, but still focused peace of music, based on raw vocal and guitar recordings, topped with a heavy baseline and edgy drums.
The whole record is a great mixture of emotional power and well crafted production. It´s very intimate and sensual, while simultaneously being powerful and heavy. A listening pleasure for anybody who loves to get lost in music!

About Tahnee Matthiesen:
Singer and songwriter Tahnee Matthiesen was born on the 18th of April 1992 in Munich. Since her Father was a musician and singer, she grew up surrounded by music, which inspired her to develop her own melodies and lyrics at a young age. When she was thirteen, she sang in a small local singer songwriter band, presenting her work for the first time in public. After finishing school she took part in a two-year music-theater-project. It was here were she met the Producer Daniel Siebertz (Provo) with whom she became known as the Trip-Hop Duo Luko.

About Hans Hu$tle:
Born in 1993, Hans Hu$tle began his musical career by building a toy guitar out of his lego collection. Soon exchanging the toy with a real instrument, he started to play pieces by groups like Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Radiohead. Strongly inspired by his elder brother, a huge fan of Portishead and UK Dubstep (and a music producer himself), Hans finally started to build tunes on his mum´s computer. In 2014 he made his first public appearance with the project - Akere , working together with singer Sarah Sulai and Drummer/Producer L One to combine Electronica, Future Beats and Trip-Hop. After their debut LP - Blue Sphinx was released on 58Beats in 2016, Hans started to focus on producing more instrumental music, leading to the release of his G-Funk and Hip-Hop influenced - D.I.D.M.Z.D.G.S.H. Tape in 2016 and his genre-combining - EP II via Bumm Clack Records in 2017.

Yet, while Hans has been making music for more than twelve years, his unique productions and genre-combining songwriting is only now being discovered by a wider audience. Just recently he got invited to Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp in Berlin, and the single - Gettin´ Money from his - EP II" got premiered by Splash Mag, one of Germany's biggest Hip-Hop magazines. His upcoming project, a collaboration EP with singer Tahnee Matthiesen, takes him back to his roots: It´s a sensual and dark record, strongly inspired by 90s Trip-Hop and Electronica. The release is anticipated for November 2017 on Compost Record's new sublabel Beat Art Department.

Born in Assam, Gauhati, in Northeast India, but currently based in New York's storied borough of Brooklyn, Jitwam spent his formative years in New Zealand and Australia, before living in monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and washed out apartments in London. Of everywhere and nowhere, his music draws influence from a litany of iconoclasts including, but not limited to RD Burman, Moondog, The Velvet Underground, Yayoi Kusama, Jay Electronica, Jay Dilla, Moodymann, Leon Thomas, Madlib and Asha Bhosle.

Across " (selftitled)", he utilizes knowledge acquired through years spent digging through dusty crates, and talents honed as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist. A series of stumbling, jazz/soul-rooted beat sculptures, each buried beneath a haze of fuzzy psychedelia, broken microphone blues, and articulated through a freestyled process he describes as "first thought, best thought", " (selftitled)" solidifies Jitwam's spot as a major emerging talent.

Recalling the fourth world dreamscapes explored by oddball songwriters like Connan Mockasin, Clarence Clarity, Jai Paul, Silicon, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, it represents a time of transition and remembrance for Jitwam, while still fulfilling the core qualities he looks for in song. In his words, "Music is a refuge. A shelter from the storm. A place you can go to close your eyes."

Since he first shared his music with IZWID Records boss Kutmah at a Brainfeeder afterparty in London, Jitwam has released through Leaving Records, Cosmic Compositions, and The Jazz Diaries (the label he co-runs with Casey Van Reyk and Nigel Mphisa). He's also written with Inkswel (BBE) and Paul White (R&S), featured on Moodymann's K7! "DJ-Kicks" compilation and been championed by Gilles Peterson, Alexander Nut, Andrew Jervis (Bandcamp), and Funkineven. Mainly mixed and mastered by Matthewdavid at Stones Throw studios in Los Angeles, " (selftitled)" will be available on vinyl and digital formats.

A former student of Jamaica's famed Alpha Boys' school, Rico Rodriguez served his musical apprenticeship playing trombone in some of the island's most celebrated orchestras and bands. A spell at Count Ossie's camp in Wareika Hills introduced him to the Rasta faith and a new approach to music, which he later introduced to his studio work.

In 1961, he emigrated to London, where he became a regular on growing the UK West Indian music scene, cutting numerous sides for every Jamaican music maker of note, including Trojan's in-house producer, Robert Thompson aka Dandy.

Dandy duly paired the trombonist with Britain leading reggae group, The Rudies, with the collaboration spawning an array of singles and the immensely popular album, Blow Your Horn, released by Trojan late in 1969.

Unavailable in any format for over 20 years, this highly sought-after boss reggae album is finally available once more, with the discovery of the long lost of the original Trojan master tapes ensuring it sounds better than ever!

23 year-old violinist and vocalist, Sudan Archives writes, plays, and produces her own music. Drawing inspiration from Sudanese fddlers, she is self-taught on the violin, and her unique songs also fold in elements of R&B, and experimental electronic music.
Sudan Archives grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she messed around with instruments in the house' and took up violin in the fourth grade, eventually teaching herself how to play the instrument by ear. When she discovered the violin playing style of Northeast Africa, her eyes opened to the possibilities of the instrument. The way they played it was different from classical music. I resonated with the style, and I was like, 'Maybe I
can use this style with electronic music,'' she says.
This fusing of folk music and electronic production was the turning point for Sudan. I started mixing my violin into beats,' she says, It wasn't complicated — I'd just sing straight into the iPad.' She honed her at-home style after moving to Los Angeles aged 19 to study music technology, and after a chance encounter at a Low End Theory party with Stones Throw
A&R and Leaving Records owner Matthewdavid, she signed with Stones Throw. At the very start of her musical career, she's already won plaudits from the likes of the New York Times and Pitchfork, and played live at experimental festival Moogfest

The Jamaican Sonia Pottinger was once called The most important Jamaican woman involved in music business'. Dancing Down Orange Street is a collection of some of her famous productions for different artists. The album captures the moment when Rocksteady transformed into Reggae by speeding up a little and moving towards a more jerky and less smooth musical palette. Famous singers as Delano Stewart and Ken Boothe are present on the album with multiple tracks. The vocal trio The Melodians (known for their hit Rivers of Babylon) provide a couple of beutifull songs. Even after all those years (released for the first time in 1969) the compilation remains a treasure of showcasing some of the finest songs produced by Sonia.

Sonia Pottinger was married to music producer Lyndon Pottinger and started to record musicians in 1996. During the late 60's she produced songs for Joe White, The Melodians and Toots & the Maytals.

Following the release of her much-lauded third album Arise, Zara McFarlane announces new single 'Peace Begins Within'. Exploring the musical possibilities of her British-Jamaican identity, it's seen her - backed by some of London's best and brightest musicians - bridging the lines between soulful roots reggae and inclusive, open-ended UK jazz.

The track is a cover of Nora Dean, a Jamaica-born vocalist who put her name to a spate of sweetly-sung roots and lovers rock in the '70s and '80s. With Zara putting her spin on the 1971 original, the format of the single nods to that heritage: with a dinked centre (requiring adapter), it also comes backed with a reggae version on the b-side. Tracing the musical heritage of the Caribbean, it's another side to her interconnected vision of the diaspora.

The album has been supported by Benji B on Radio One, David Rodigan on 1xtra and Zara has been interviewed on NTS, Worldwide FM and Soho Radio. The album has also received big support from magazines across the board (see press quotes below).

A dub version courtesy of Archiver, strips back the track allowing all the intricate layers to breathe with the guitars, flutes & driving bass and drums taking centre stage.On the other side is a three way collaboration between Archiver and fellow producer Matteo Boyero, and features vocals from Wallace Adalphus. He has released tracks and albums on numerous labels such as Duke Reid, Trojan plus his own Coptic Lion imprint to name a few. ABOUT i&i MUSIK i&i Musik is a small independent record label based in London and setup by producer Archiver. The label is centred around Archiver's own productions and collaborations, but will also showcase other artists and producers. Not wanting to be pigeon holed, the label will mix styles and genres where dub techniques and bass feature prominently.

Black Ivory was the pride of Harlem - and New York's answer to the Philly-Fine Delfonics - but with in­nitely more teen sex appeal. This silky-smooth 70s harmony trio featured the fabulous falsetto lead of Leroy Burgess (nephew of Philly soul legend, Thom Bell) and charted four top-40 R&B singles and two top-30 LPs under the guiding hand of their manager and TODAY records' driving force, Patrick Adams. Songs like, You and I', Time is Love' and Don't Turn Around' (which they performed live on Soul Train) are acknowledged Sweet Soul classics. And as the decade progressed and tastes changed, they successfully conquered the disco dance-oors with fave-raves like, Mainline' and Walking Downtown (Saturday Night) for BUDDAH records - which were liberally sampled by the Hip-Hop generation - a true testament to the staying power of their incessantly soulful sound.

Ransom Note Records continue their search for the finest dance music from Planet Earth with a carnival-ready curveball of a new release, the sleazy, playful Ghanaian Afro-Ghetto-Techno-Pop that is Bryte's word-of-mouth classic I Like Your Girlfriend. Originally surfacing on a couple of YouTube dance videos, the shitty quality video rip of Bryte's bizarro lyrics leaping over Gafacci's impeccable grime-meets-afrohouse beat has been a much-loved secret weapon in the sets of DJs that know for a minute now - Bok Bok, Mixpak and Gang Fatale have all supported heavily. Coming from Accra's booming Azonto dance scene, where tracks are knocked out in makeshift home-built studios then swapped through social media apps on smartphones, a proper release of I Like Your Girlfriend has long remained a holy grail. Now, after months of searching, several Western Union transfers, hundreds of WhatsApp messages and no lack of determination, Ransom Note have finally managed to legitimately sign the track, and are all set to give a modern classic the 12' release it deserves - making history with what is quite possibly the first Azonto track to be released on vinyl. Alongside Bryte's crazy vocal version, the release features the original beat from producer Gafacci - its bouncing techy minimalism carving a unique path between techno, house and UK funky that defies genre with glee. Vinyl buyers get a special bonus, Bryte's acapella, coming in at 128 bpm, is the perfect mixing tool.

The spectacularly exceptional singer Esther Phillips performing a magical concert at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, in 1978. The legendary Hamburg hot spot is once again turned into a seething cauldron of emoti ons.

Phillips was rediscovered in the disco era: with What a Difference a Day Makes', a song which had previously been an inherent part of the repertoire of Dinah Washington, an arti st much admired by Esther. Of course, the song was

also performed at Onkel Pö, just before the end of the concert. The concert, which was recorded by NDR and featured powerful accompanists and a highly enthusiasti c audience - now documented on two CDs - showed her ability to completely enchant her audience.

For anyone preparing to battle a bout of seasonal-affective disorder, producer Martin Brew, otherwise known as Manchester's sonic-maestro J-Walk, is all set to shine a little limelight through the dark with eight deep cuts that shimmer on the brand new LP Limelight Nights.

'I started on Limelight Nights during the spring and it was very much inspired by the nice weather at the time which also seemed to galvanise me into making something 'summery' in feel,' Martin explains. 'It's all about light, time, seasons and how certain points in the day or year can invoke a certain feeling or mood...from melancholy to joyfulness and all the other places in between.'

Serving as a precursor to J-Walk's debut LP A Night On The Rocks, which captured the feel of a night-time world, Limelight Nights is inspired by what happens prior to that. The moment when twilight descends, the sun sets, the stars begin to sparkle and all the wild and wonderful anticipation, expectations and excitement it brings.

With 12 years between J-Walk's debut and sophomore release, fans waited whilst J-Walk took a break after touring, remixed Baaba Maal, Rae And Christian, Kings Of Convenience, and Nitin Sawhney, then took some time to recharge when 'life just kind of took over' but Limelight Nights was written in just 12 months. Surprising, given that J-Walk now plays the role of all members of a fictitious band, writing, playing and recording all instruments himself. 'I now record my guitars to my computer rather than tape and have to think like each separate member of a band to play that particular instrument. It means the process takes longer than a band writing and playing together,' Martin says.

One thing that hasn't changed is the influence of Manchester. Whilst the city centre buckles under the weight of change and lines the pockets of the already rich, Limelight Nights takes a fresh new stance; 'I live just outside Manchester and see it every day! It's a dynamic city with all the development that's still going on, but it's now the fringes of the city where the interesting stuff happens... in the old run-down industrial arches and warehouses; in the hinterlands that are probably an embarrassment to the council... this is where the young and hungry creative energies can be found that I find inspiring.'

Wiping off the raindrops and peering in from the outside, each track is shot with serotonin and brings a voyeuristic positivity to the changing northern landscape. Since the days of the project's incarnation after using one of New Order's old Akai S900 samplers - an artefact that no longer works, but still takes pride of place in Martin's home ('I can't let it go as it's a little piece of history and very special to me!') J-Walk's musical influences and passions have once again been given the treatment they so brilliantly deserve with a body of twisting sweeping synths for a deeper dance vibe.

The seductive French vocals of 'Aimons Toujours' and infectious West-Coast groove of 'Twilight' draw inspiration from producers and artists such as Bibio, Peaking Lights, Jaakko Eino Kalevi, and MGMT plus The Durutti Column, Tom Tom Club, Sly & Robbie, and the Style Council. There's even a nod to local legend, the late Rob Gretton. 'Rob gave me my first break and released my first record...something I'm eternally grateful for,' Martin recalls. 'He was warm and brilliantly sharp, and always took a keen interest in the music I was making. I miss him and still think about him lots - in many ways he defined Manchester for me since my teens and still does, because that musical legacy and the city are inseparable.

The vital thing, however, Martin says, is to keep looking forward and keep it light; 'As an artist it's important to develop and push yourself further all the time. I've been DJing since my teens, and have been buying records religiously since I was 13, so in a sense it's my job to keep up to date with what's happening. I'm very proud of the music I have made, and am currently making - it's all part of the journey and the overall oeuvre.'

Known by genre aficionados as one of the greatest singers and most riveting stage presences in soul music, Jackie Shane has remained largely unknown outside Toronto, where her career briefly flowered in the 1960s. Beyond her unmistakable gift of the gab, Shane is a pioneer of transgender rights, born in a male body but unabashedly living her entire life as a woman at a time when to do so seemed unthinkable. Any Other Way is the first artist-approved collection of Ms. Shane's work, collecting all six of her 45s and every highlight from the legendary 1967 live sessions at the Sapphire Tavern, including three mind blowing, previously-unreleased tracks. Rob Bowman's 20,000 word essay is Jackie's first communication with the public in nearly half a century, telling for the first time ever Jackie Shane's story in her own words.

Like A Ship is a stirring and powerful meditation on the wayward aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement. Tracked with the help of Chess/Cadet maestros Gene Barge, Phil Upchurch, and Richard Evans, the album is a mix of euphoric gospel and Mayfield esque political soul, with sleigh bells, hand claps, and jazzy piano stabs. Sampled by T.I., Kanye, and Khaled, Barrett created a rapturous, crossover gospel classic that's still wildly relevant.

The sweet and soulful harmonies of the Whatnauts spanned a 15-year career in which they recorded three albums and numerous singles, ranging from timeless ballads to Temptations-esque politically-charged funk to dance­oor boogie. Shinsekai New World, refers to the periphery of severe poverty and destitution in Osaka, Japan. Called Nishinari-ku it is home to many beautiful people.

Both these songs from the Leon Ware abum Inside is Love' first released in 1979 and later by Expansion on LP and download. Both these songs are moden soul dancefloor fillers, previously both released as singles but not in their full length versions like here. What's Your Name' is also taken from the new Expansion compilation Soul Festival' with rare and in demand 70s soul gems. Inside Your Love' is Leon's own take on a song he wrote for Minnie Ripperton. This is classic Leon Ware from an album just ahead of his two Elektra released that would feature Rockin' You Eternally' and Why I Came To California' (both also now on Expansion 7' back to back).

Lion—and the mean ecstasy of You've Got A Woman,' the B-side to their sole release—comprise a rare burst of psychedelic-Western soul from two names best known for Dutch progressive rock and new wave. Drummer Peter de Leeuwe, departing from the symphonic leanings of Dutch prog-fixtures Ekseption, penned it in 1975, layering syncopated explosions of hand-claps, vibraslap and slick drumwork with neutron-star density, with super-producer Hans van Hemert nearly bursting Glenn Robles' vocals through the fore. The Shoes Subtle Edit' provides exactly that, gently teasing the organ- and requintohinted contours of the track to better suit the treasure within. Chicago-based septet Whitney have brought some attention to You've Got A Woman' with a recent cover, and the faith with which they recreate much of the original instrumentation proves the extent of Lion's accomplishment.

Nubiyan Twist exploded onto the global stage with their 2015 debut album Nubiyan Twist', drawing on elements of jazz, afrobeat, hiphop, soul and dub to create their own trademark style, driven by powerful, arrangements, a driving rhythm section and the laidback, soulful delivery of female vocalist Nubiya Brandon. Encouraging artistic and social unity between different cultures and musical styles, notable influences include the likes of Fela Kuti, King Tubby, J Dilla, Herbie Hancock and Nat King Cole.

* DJ MC aka Mario Cooper coming from the Southside of Chicago was first introduced to the world outside of Footworks inner circle through Planet Mu's second episode of the legendary 'Bangs & Works' compilation in November 2011. One of the collections most remarkable and memorable tracks 'Y Fall' already made very clear that Mario Cooper plays in his own league.

A few years ago, Melodies family members Floating Points and DJ Red Greg got their hands on a couple of original 70s obscurities. While these standout records shone brightly in their own right, the two DJs saw the potential to create their own edits behind the scenes, finely attuning the original versions to modern-day dancefloor standards. Of these new recordings, they cut only five copies for themselves and a few DJ friends of theirs.
