Voilaaa - Des Promesses
FVR132LP
Favorite
2x12inch07.04.201707.APR.17

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDiscoWorld Music

Voilaaa is one of the many projects led and produced by Bruno Patchworks' Hovart, who's proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres.

This time exploring the wide spectrum of the African and Tropical Disco scene, he received a massive international support for Voilaaa's first album, On te l'avait dit, released late 2015 on Favorite Recordings.

Following to that success and pursuing the same direction combining of the festive, yet sometime futile nature of Disco, and the instinctive, deep, sometimes rough nature of African music, Voilaaa's now presenting its 2nd efforts, Des Promesses.

The 13 tracks of the album are again up to expectations, and Voilaaa has not finished feeding international dancefloors with heavy Afro-Disco music. Alongside Bruno at the production, singers Pat Kalla and Sir Jean are back providing their carefree lyrics and Afro vibes, and Senegalese artist Doctor Lass comes to extend the team, with 3 brilliant titles, including a great Funky cover of the classic Mandjou' by Salif Keita and Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux..

2x12inch23.02.201723.FEB.17

HouseDiscoHip-HopFunkSoul

Love to unearth DISCO's more SOULFUL jewels but don't have the time or money to dedicate yourself to the mouse-click
battles between pasty-faced collectors on e-bay Disco-nut producer Joey Negro and fellow crafty crate-digger Sean P came to the rescue in 2005 with the first of their great value Soul of Disco albums that was rammed to the rafters with CLASSIC, RARE, HARD to FIND GEMS from the era that brought us fantastic music and sparkly platforms. Now, more than 10 years later the album finally sees a gatefold double vinyl release featuring 10 of the best tracks from Vol.1 of the series. So rare and highly sought after are many of these tracks by Disco connoisseurs that the original 12's of this album would likely cost you several thousand pounds, if you were lucky enough to find them in the first place. This collection spans the years 1976-'82, with an R&B slant and more song-based material; and is intended to show that there were a few more sides (many more to come, of course) to one of the last century's biggest musical phenomena. Some of the tracks included appear in EXCLUSIVE DJ FRIENDLY RE-EDITS courtesy of JOEY NEGRO himself. In a compilation brimming over with accessible earthiness, rawness and downright soulfulness, Joey and Sean continue their mission to help us understand how disco's influence is still shaping music 30 years after it broke into the mainstream. DISCO JUST GOT SOUL!

Ahmed Malek & Flako - The Electronic Tapes LP
HABIBI005 -1
HABIBI FUNK RECORDS
12inch22.02.201722.FEB.17

Hip-HopFunkBeatsAmbient

In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek was already in his 50s , when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. The result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in Cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in Cuba and the US. None of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and we're happy to present this different side of Ahmed Malek's music. It was compiled and co-produced by Flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. This is not a remix album though, Flako's aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if Mr. Malek would have finished it himself before of his death. Fully approved and licensed from the artists family.

The album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with Flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. We will also release a third album by Ahmed Malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased.

Expressway Yo-yo Dieting - Undone Harmony Following
TYPE131
Type Vinyl
12inch22.02.201722.FEB.17

Hip-HopHip-HopBeatsGrimeExperimental

The return of one of the weirdest producers out there, sometimes known as DJ Yo Yo Dieting, sometimes known as Indignant Senility, this time deploying a set of syruppy chopped & screwed productions that sound something like DJ Screw processed thru guitar pedals or Lil Ugly Mane heard booming from the next block. This is basically the most satisfying out-there mixtape of the year...

Incorrigible noise mutant Pat Maher buries chopped 'n screwed hip hop in proper, cranky noise on the long awaited follow-up to his Bubblethug album as Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting. Imagine a DJ Screw tape covered in gravy, left to bake in the sun and then kneaded thru guitar pedals and you've got some taste of the chewy, thuggish ruggish gear on this killer dish.

While Maher may be as well known for his fractal techno as Diamond Catalog or his smeared 78 sessions in The Caretaker-esque Indignant Senility project, it was under the Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting alias that he first really got under the skin of popular consciousness, bubbling up alongside Lil B's seminal Rain In England on Weird Forest Records c. 2010 to ruggedly reset American hip hop from oblique, avant new perspectives.

Aside from a few mixtapes, Undone Harmony Following is the project's first appearance since then and picks up exactly where he left us, huffing up classic and little known hip hop joints and spitting them out as hazy, masticated globules of gristle and noise perfect for the muggiest, blunted listening sessions.

They're like the sonic equivalent of a noise weirdo idly doodling graf sigils in a battered sketchbook for his own gratitude, and thankfully Undone Harmony Following allows everyone else to peer over his shoulder see what he's scribbling, 13 raw, oozing cuts of slurred vocals and distended grooves that sag over the belt line, dripping rivulets of grease and grit, and always appearing to be on the brink of lethargic collapse.

Its ultimate value lies in that heavy-lidded space between woke and fugged-out dream lyf, and in the way which Maher drags the listener into his uniquely suspended, effected temporality that makes this record almost dangerously, druggily seductive and as vital as it gets right now...

For more than 20 year Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers), Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero, Ondatropica) and Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo, Sidestepper) have been exposed to latinamerican tropical types of music that for many years (and still these days) have been relegated to the last place of good taste. Vallenato, peruvian chicha, colombian raspa, champeta, some african sounds and cumbia in its different genres (sabanera, rabajada, sonidera) make part of the new style that Los Piranas expose in the agitated Colombian music scene.

Robo Arigo & His Konastone Majesty - Sexy Thing
PMG063LP
PGM Rec.
12inch10.03.201710.MAR.17

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDisco

Robo Arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from Nigeria's Ogun State. A founding member of Pogo Ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on Sexy Thing too. One listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart lay. Especially when he gets to slap it. The slapping starts early on 'Konastone Ponk', a dippy, funky track where Robo implores that if his music 'touches your soul, get up and dance.' The interplay between bass and guitar is magic - it's clear that Eno Louis is Nile Rodgers to Robo's Rick James, with a bit of Prince and Parliament thrown in for good measure. The funk feels dark and dangerous on 'Girls Reservation' and gets seriously slinky on 'Sexy Thing'. I can't over emphasis what a truly great album this is. The sound is clean and the production is stripped back and funky, a sound Robo would finesse as a producer with his Robbosoneex Music Company in Benin. Listen to the audacious cover of 'Get Up, Stand Up', and tell me that you're not convinced that very Bob Marley songs needs a slap bass break in the middle. You need this record in your life. - Peter Moore

Sony Enang - Don't Stop That Music
PMG062LP
PGM Rec.
12inch10.03.201710.MAR.17

Hip-HopFunkSoul

In the early 1980s, Nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. With the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like Lemmy Jackson, Jake Sollo, Tony Okoroji and Nkono Teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. Such was the fate of Sony Enang with Don't Stop That Music. Sony was no ordinary musician. As keyboard player and vocalist with The Founders, he'd recorded some of the most seminal albums to come out of Eastern Nigeria. But his album is best known for being produced by Jake Sollo, and featuring the song, 'Discolypso,' that came to represent Sollo's very particular sound. Not that Sony Enang should be too concerned. 'Don't Stop That Music' is at turns cosmopolitan, sexy, hip, romantic, glamorous and witty. It's got sophisticated dance floor fillers ('Don't Stop That Music' and 'Where Were You') chirpy, good-time boogie ('Hold On' and 'You Are The One') and a bit of calypso-reggae sunshine to boot ('Life'). In short, it's the sound of a confident and prosperous Nigeria. A sound as sophisticated as anywhere else in the world, but with a unique energy all of its own. - Peter Moore

Steve Monite - Only You
PMG060LP
PMG
12inch27.03.201727.MAR.17

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDiscoFolk

2018 REPRESS! Steve Monite's album, Only You, is a prime slab of Nigerian boogie. It's sinewy, compact and sexy, a little bit of disco mixed with a big dose of funk. Loose and groovy, it's a sonic seduction from another dimension. With legendary producer Tony Okoroji at the desk, and influential musician and sound engineer, Nkono Teles, creating magic on the synth, the title track is raw and melodic, dark and sweet at the same time. Steve sings about putting out a fire, but the music, and Stella Monye's sultry backing vocals, stoke it with aural gasoline. You've never heard a song less likely to lower the temperature and let cooler heads prevail. While never quite reaching the heights of 'Only You', 'Welcome My Love' and 'Things Fall Apart' keep the groove going, the later with a distinctly Latin swing. A couple of extended 'Disco Jams' and an obligatory, romantic ballad ('I Had A Dream') round out the record. In all honesty, however, it is 'Only You' that you'll keep going back to. It's a killer track, an Afro Boogie classic that would hold its own on any dance floor in the world, whether in the 80s or today.

Taso - New Start
TEKLIFE003
Teklife
12inch20.12.201620.DEC.16

Hip-HopHip-HopBeatsElectro

Teklife Records are ready to drop their third release: New Start by Taso. The 7 track LP features collaborations with DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn, Gant-Man, DJ Tre, DJ Manny, DJ Taye and DJ Earl. New Start follows on from a highly coveted vinyl edition, critical acclaim and strong DJ Support for Open Your Eyes by DJ Earl. Once again, the spirit of collaboration is a key element: Teklife is a closely connected group of friends, working together harmoniously, and pushing each other to greater heights and depths through a shared love of footwork music. Smoke Dat Green, Taso's collaboration with DJ Earl, was featured on Open Your Eyes, and now Taso himself takes centre stage for the next instalment, presenting unreleased classics alongside brand new footwork sounds. An accomplished DJ and MC, Taso frequently appears alongside Spinn at Teklife showcases all over the world. But despite a busy touring schedule, Taso never stops making beats. A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in audio engineering, Taso fuses raw musical talent with technical expertise. Since January this year, he has released an impressive 8 volumes of the Cold Heat EP series, bringing together a whole range of musical styles and moods through his MPC at 160 BPM. This versatility and willingness to draw inspiration from different sources is evident throughout the New Start LP. The title track is sultry and soulful, with Rashad and Spinn's masterful influence clearly present. Don't Get Mad provides a stark contrast: a dancefloor-orientated hype track featuring an on point vocal by Gant-Man. Bussin featuring DJ Manny and DJ Tre sounds like a love letter from footwork to jungle music. Over on the flip side, we start off with AM Track: another beautifully crafted classic featuring DJ Rashad and Dj Spinn. In the Green Room featuring Dj Taye is a muscular, speaker-rattling West Coast jam, and Murda Bass takes its cue from golden era UK Dubstep. The heavily - filtered final notes of De Capo Al Coda featuring DJ Earl round off a diverse but consistently high quality outing from Taso and the Teklife family. Message from Taso: Thank you and much respect for supporting Teklife music. Without you there is no us. This record is dedicated to DJ Rashad and his family.'

Hip-HopFunkSoul

Bernie Worrell was a keyboardist and composer best known as a founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic and for his work with Talking Heads. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997 with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. Bernie's music influence and contribution, not just to Funk but also Rock and Hip Hop, was immense. All The Woo In The World is the debut Funk album by Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, originally released in 1978. The album was pressed in limited amount and is heavily sought after by collectors. The keeper track of this marvelous album is Insurance Man for the Funk' as its 12 minutes and 39 seconds of pure P-Funk. It has everything, layered sounds, a toe-tapping mid-tempo beat and some incredible horns. On some of the other tracks Bernie still does most of the lead vocals, but Junie Morrison plays a significant role. The album features various P-Funk alumni as well, such as Garry Shider, Bootsy Collins, Billy Bass Nelson and Eddie Hazel.

Dubbed the Wizard of Woo,' Worrell is credited with giving the funk outfit their futuristic sound with his incredible use of synthesizers.

Childish Gambino is (and isn't) Donald Glover, a recording artist, writer, actor, director, producer and comic who was gifted his alias by an online Wu Tang-Clan name-generator. Originally hailing from Stone Mountain, Georgia - his Mum was a daycare provider and his Dad a postal worker, where TV was banned in the house - Glover first entered the spotlight as a member of sketch-troupe Derrick Comedy, via a stint working on The Daily Show and the invitation to join the '30 Rock' writing staff by Tina Fey before he'd even graduated from NYU. A succession of mini-albums and mixtapes surrounded all of this, parallel to acting roles ranging from The Muppets to NBC's cult hit comedy 'Community'. It was 2011's debut album 'Camp' - his first since signing to Glassnote Records - which marked a breakthrough for Childish Gambino, whose music explores everything from identity, race, and technology to hip-hop culture, class, and family. Follow-up 'because the internet' went top 10 on the Billboard chart, was nominated for 2 Grammy Awards and further assimilated Gambino's multiple disciplines (it was accompanied, for instance, by two films and a standalone 72-page screenplay). Around this time - and between roles in HBO's 'Girls' and movies like 'The Martian' - Glover also announced that he was working on his own TV show: a comedy-drama which he would star in, write and direct, 'Atlanta' premiered on FX this autumn to significant critical acclaim (it's already been described as "Twin Peaks with rappers"). The show was launched alongside the third Childish Gambino, 'Awaken, My Love!', this summer at 'Pharos', a series of secretive, audio-visual live performances which took place in a custom-designed dome in the middle of the desert in Joshua Tree. A second series of 'Atlanta' has already been commissioned, whilst Glover has recently been cast in the forthcoming Spider Man movie and has also been confirmed to play the iconic role of Lando Calrissian in the next Star Wars film (a Han Solo spin-off). His most vital artistic statement to date, Childish Gambino is expected to unveil further music from 'Awaken, My Love!' in the coming weeks.

His big brother, Aigbe, was a legendary Highlife bandleader, but Felix paid his dues playing guitar with Thony Shorby Nwenyi and the Collection of Stars, along with fellow 'star' Mighty Flames bassist, Willy Nfor. Perversely, Girls For Sale was released after Lover Boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in Nigerian music history. It is a collection of tracks Lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practised. In 'Come True', Lebarty actually admits to a girl that he hasn't got any money. He begs a girl to love him in 'Love Me Kiss Me' and pleads with a rival to give him a break in 'Don't Take My Girl'. He even takes a dig at Aigbe, his more successful sibling, in 'Mr Big Brother'. It's hardly what you'd expect from the disco god behind Lover Boy, who went on to have 19 children with 7 different women. To me, that's what makes Girls For Sale worth checking out. It's gritty, lo-fi and melodic, like The Apostles with a subtle a nod towards the Jackson Five, sung with endearing insecurity. What's not to like about that - Peter Moore

Er kann nach 20 Jahren im Rapgame mit einem ewig langen Pressetext beworben werden - aber das ist alles egal. Ibibio Sound Machine is a clash of African and electronic elements inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West African funk, disco, modern post-punk, and electro. Since their self-titled debut in 2014, the band has forged a reputation as a high-energy live act appearing on stages such as Later with Jools Holland, Glastonbury, Roskilde, and the BBC 6 Music Festival, as well as at iconic venues such as Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London as part of Lauren Laverne's Wonder Women' series. The album title Uyai (pronounced 'you eye') means beauty' in Ibibio language and refers to the strength and free spirit of women in general and in particular, the courage of the women in lead singer Eno Williams' family, to whom she often refers in her writing.. The songs are based more around themes of empowerment, freedom, and the liberation of dance for women, and people in general.' The album opens with Give Me a Reason,' a song about the 276 Chibok girls who were abducted in northern Nigeria in 2014 and remain missing to this day. Eno challenges, Why should girls be denied the right to education, and why should people in general not be free to be who they want to be in their life' The Pot Is On Fire' is a food dance celebrating the happy place' when the food will be ready soon. It's also metaphorical,' Eno writes. Something is brewing which will soon bear fruit.' Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's Ibibio tongue, form the creative fabric from which the band's unique musical tapestry is woven. Evocative poetic imagery and empowering messages set against an edgy, Afro-Electro soundscape give the band a unique space within the current wave of modern Afrocentric sounds sweeping across the globe.

Jackie Edwards voice can be heard on 100's of Ska, R&B. Soul and Rocksteady records.
In fact all the in carnations that evolved from Reggae.
He was at the birth of Island Records and his distinctive soulful voice has rightly given him the moniker of the Original Cool Ruler.
Jackie Edwards (b. Wilfred Edwards 1938,Jamaica)was a renowned singer from the early days and by 1959 had presented future Island Records owner Chris Blackwell with two outstanding tunes.
The first a sentimental ballad 'Your eyes are Dreaming' and a Latin beat tune 'Tell me Darling'.
His song writing skills were much in so demand and his popularity of such importance that when Chris Blackwell went to London in1962 to set up his record company he took his top Balladeer Jackie with him.
This would pay dividends when a UK group Blackwell had signed called The Spencer Davis Group went on to release two of Jackie's compositions 'Keep on Running' and 'Somebody Help Me', which topped the British charts in 1966.
We have compiled some of Jackie Edwards finest songs..all cool tunes in different Reggae styles but all sung to perfection..
Hope you enjoy the set....

Six long years have passed since 'From A Scarecrows Perspective' revealed Leaf's unmistakable voice to the rap world. The true beauty of a musical hiatus is when the fans remain feverish for a return. In Leaf Dog's case, his movements between solo outings have seen him extend both his vision as RLD Records boss, producer extraordinaire, 1/4 of The Four Owls and 1/3 of Brothers Of The Stone, power moves that have taken him to the highest reaches of the scene, however, make no mistake, when it comes to true, uncut introspection, it was always going to be about that second solo installment.

The wait is over. Leaf Dog is back!!!

Here is your first official taste of the monumental 'Dyslexic Disciple' LP, the first single 'My Scene' produced by Naive. Anthemic to say the least, 'My Scene' is a celebration of how far the UK Hip Hop scene has come over the years!

We have pressed up 'My Scene' on to limited edition 7'' vinyl alongside another future classic cut from 'Dyslexic Disciple' entitled 'Today' produced by Leaf Dog himself. There are only 500 limited edition 7'' singles (never to be repressed)!

Often called the Jimi Hendrix of the pedal steel guitar,' and named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time' by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, Robert Randolph has, since the turn of the century, revolutionized the role of his chosen instrument.

One listen to Got Soul—the fifth studio album overall by this virtuosic player and the genre-busting Family Band and first since 2013—reaffirms that they have truly evolved into one of the most exciting, innovative outfits in contemporary music. Got Soul takes stock of his past as a church musician in New Jersey even as it pushes the band forward into new places. The music takes me back into the roots of who I am, where I came from,' says Robert Randolph. It's got an upbeat, positive church/ gospel/rock/bluesy vibe to it. I'm like a rock and roll preacher on Got Soul'.

The name of the album, drawn from the title track and the song into which it segues, She Got Soul,' is Randolph's way of saying that we all need to reconnect with who we really are. People like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, Elvis and the Stones, they were all in tune with their soul,' Randolph says. When you're digging deep in your soul, you can always find originality. People got soul everywhere.'
There's certainly no shortage of originality on Got Soul. Produced by multiple Grammy awards nominee Matt Pierson, the 12-song set runs the gamut from the above-mentioned gospel-informed numbers to deep, funky grooves to incendiary rock-and-soul jams. The exquisite Heaven's Calling' features Randolph on solo steel while guest vocalists Anthony Hamilton and Darius Rucker lend their golden pipes to She Got Soul' and Love Do What It Do', respectively. I Thank You,' the
'60s Sam & Dave R&B smash, is completely reimagined in the hands of the Family Band and Snarky Puppy's very own Cory Henry.

We just wanted something that was very raw and sounded good,' says Randolph about Got Soul. There's absolutely no question that they got what they wanted.

Run Dmc - King Of Rock
GET51321LP
GET ON DOWN
12inch28.03.201728.MAR.17

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Run-DMC's self-titled 1984 debut pushed the doors of pop music open, showing that hip-hop was not the fad that
haters had prophesized. As they proved decisively on Run-DMC, rap was a legit art form, fully capable of producing
long-players full of no-fast-forward cuts.
By 1985, any doubters were running on fumes, as the group's King Of Rock blew the aforementioned pop doors off
their hinges. Emboldened by their success (including the first rap album to ever go Gold), energized by worldwide
touring and accolades, and given all the support they could want by a genius producer (Larry Smith), an open-minded
label (Profile) and a charismatic manager (Russell Simmons, who also lent a hand on production), they ruled the
charts and hinted at even greater things to come.
The album's most fondly-remembered single set the album's tone perfectly: 'King Of Rock' was hard, full of charisma
and tag-team vocal finesse, and had enough guitars to bring the suburbs into the rap fold. The song's video was
equally popular and powerful, and the pioneering MTV exposure drove the group into a new stratosphere.
But there was much more to King Of Rock than the title track, including more rock / rap hybrids - 'Can You Rock It
Like This' and 'You're Blind' - as well as the additional singles 'Jam-Master Jammin'' and 'You Talk Too Much.'
(The latter, incidentally, charted as high as 'King Of Rock' on both the Pop and R&B charts).
Throw in the forward-thinking reggae/rap collab 'Roots, Rap, Reggae' (featuring the legendary Yellowman) and the
live-throwdown-simulation 'Darryl and Joe (Krush-Groove 3)' and the album - which went on to pass Platinum status
- is a winner from A1 to B4.

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDiscoFolk

- Peter Moore

Leaning against a wall, his shirt unbuttoned to his navel and cradling a tumbler of something strong and sophisticated, Tony Igiettemo looks every bit the smooth talking 80s gent. When you put Hot Like Fire on the turntable and drop the needle, however, it is immediately clear that Smooth Tony is also a little bit freaky. Sirens, slap bass, squelchy synths and a titchy high hat that just won't give up, Hot Like Fire is a cosmic call from a dance floor on the far side of the universe. Produced by John Malife - the go-to man in Nigeria when you wanted your funk freaky - it's driven by a heavy low end that compels you to move. 'Baby You Can Do It' is Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' via a sweaty Nigerian dance floor. 'I Feel So Good' has a Kool & The Gang vibe, albeit with a freaky, warbling synth. And 'Hot Like Fire' is a strange reggae/funk fusion, fuelled by the righteous herb. 'We Are One' and 'Africa Must Unite', meanwhile, are post-disco, reggae-tinged calls for African Unity. 'Rock Your Baby' is the album's most relentless dance floor banger and sums up its ethos best. Clap your hands everybody and get down on it. Tony Igiettomo is here to make your body move. - Peter Moore

Recorded and mixed by Adrian Younge at Linear Labs, the preeminent analog studio of Los Angeles, CA.
