Hip-HopClassicsFunkSoul

From late 1964 until late 1968, Loma stood as the subsidiary of Warner Brothers Records aimed directly at the singles market. During its four year lifespan, the label released over 100 singles and a handful of albums, the vast majority of which reflected the collective taste of the men that guided Loma and thereby the evolution of a distinctive artform: soul music.

Viewed objectively, it would be incorrect to compare Loma to the other great R&B repositories of the mid-1960s. It was strictly an adjunct of a bigger label, a commercially-minded operation that threw product at the wall hoping for a hit to stick. But the choices made by those three main participants in charge of the Loma roster-Bob Krasnow, Russ Regan, and Jerry Ragovoy-have gone on to become cherished totems to legions of music aficionados around the globe, for whom chart statistics say little, while a simple 45 with a burnt yellow label can shake them to the very core. What was once regarded as failure has, in the years since, paradoxically become a story of soulful success.

The four volumes of Loma: A Soul Music Love Affair are the result of several years of in-depth research into the Loma vault. This first installment concerns itself with the category that has made Loma such a celebrated imprint to fans: Northern soul aimed strictly at the dancefloor. Acknowledged floor-fillers like Ben Aiken's Satisfied' and Ike & Tina Turner's Somebody (Somewhere) Needs You' nestle with sought-after rarities by The Soul Shakers, Marvellos, and Voice Box. There are classics from The Olympics and Apollas, overlooked gems by The Jammers and Paul Days, an unissued stomper from Bobby Freeman, and the legendarily withdrawn single by Bob & Earl.

With full historical notes on artist and label history and rare pieces of ephemera, Loma: A Soul Music Love Affair is a fresh and invigorating celebration of one of 60s soul's most storied imprints.

Volume two of Loma: A Soul Music Love Affair focuses on the funkier, earthier side of the Loma catalog and is once again the result of several years of in-depth research into the vault. JJ Jackson and The Mighty Hannibal bring the boogaloo, Baby Lloyd and Lukas Lollipop offer up some deep soul, and the stratospheric pipes of Carl Hall make us wanna holler. There's the grooving original of Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)' by diva Lorraine Ellison, little-heard rarities from Larry Laster and Roy Redmond, obscure productions by James Brown and Solomon Burke, and a heartbreaking unissued cut by one-time Hendrix sideman Lonnie Youngblood.

With full historical notes on artist and label history and rare pieces of ephemera, Loma: A Soul Music Love Affair is a fresh and invigorating celebration of one of 60s soul's most storied imprints.

Several years of in-depth research into the Loma vault provide the content of our third volume. It celebrates the many sophisticated uptown productions on the label, mostly cut in New York under the auspices of Ragovoy, Van McCoy, George Kerr, Richard Tee, and other soul notables. Loma goddess-and Aretha's favorite singer-Linda Jones gets us Hypnotized' while Bobby Freeman spooks with Shadow Of Your Love.' Rarities include soulful items from The Realistics, Bobby Reed, Mary Lee Whitney, and Tommy Starr, along with several unreleased titles, including heart wrenching nuggets by The Enchanters and Carl Hall, and the never-before-heard Bob & Earl gem Just One Look In Your Eyes'.

Last but not least, our unprecedented dig into the Loma Record vaults has thrown up a surfeit of soulful goodies for the final volume, many of which are previously unreleased. Northern soul fans will marvel at the dancefloor potential of The Marvellos' I Need You' or The Invincibles' Heartstrings.' Aficionados of the Ragovoy-supervised uptown sound will groove on Carl Hall's Like I Told You' and Ben Aiken's That's All You Gotta Do.' The tracklist also shines light on many unfairly overlooked entries in the Loma listings by the likes of Linda Jones, Billy Storm, The Implements, and The Realistics, and yet more compelling cuts from The Apollas, Teen Turbans, and The Mighty Hannibal remind us just why we love Loma.

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopRockFolk

In 2010, when the American Marc Anthony Thompson, said Chocolate Genius Inc, released his fourth album Swansongs (and his first for the French label No Format), he announced at the same time that It will be the last, at least under this name.

Great loss to be missed: as surely as discreetly, Marc Anthony Thompson had imposed himself over the years and records as an indispensable soul singer, faithful to the music he listened to teenager (Al Green, Sam Cooke and all the giants Of the genre), but above all preserved from the trap and the ease of imitation, the retro revival. On form, this man with warm, subtle and often heartbreaking tone took all liberties, flirted with indie rock, embraced blues, folk and funk. After two albums under his baptismal name in the 80s, and three others as Chocolate Genius (Black Music in 1998, Godmusic in 2001, and Black Yankee Rock in 2005), the musician had signed with No Format And an esthetics that suit him well) his song of the swan.

This fifth album is a meticulous blend of underground soul, rock bricole, r'n'b low-fi, disarming folk of soft veiled. The twelve songs resemble what Chocolate Genius Inc has always done: that is, they resemble only him, and reflect the richness and variety of his inspiration. They hover and float between genres and references. Chocolate Genius Inc. plays all instruments, but it also plays with light, with emotions, with space-time, with flesh. Twelve songs, twelve balls in the skin, which give the thrill and cross the epidermis to touch to the heart, to the thousand. If this record is the beginning of the end for Chocolate Genius Inc., we already dream of hearing the sequel.

Baker's Dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hip-hop, ambient, and electronic music offers each artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound. Growth is about adaptation, existing in transit, and nourishing flux. It gives us a reason to move on to our next project, challenges us, and feeds our creative hunger. Sona Elango, as the multi-talented Elaquent, captures a catalogue of experiences and feelings that span time zones from over the better part of 2016. Elaquent has created a reflective sound weaving themes of travel and personal growth into the core of his music. Worst Case Scenario is a record with roots in Europe and Japan, inspired by moments of reflection in hostels, airports, and trains. It boasts Elaquent's growth not only as a beat maker and producer, but as an artist, conscious of peers, music lovers, and strangers alike. He explains how I wanted it to feel personal and conducive to who I am, but I'll let everyone deduce what they want about each song. It's open to interpretation.' Elaquent demonstrates that relative themes have a power that is bigger than ourselves. He manages to hit the bittersweet mark of self-reflection perfectly, reminding us that sometimes the most daunting and intimidating reflections, can secretly be moments of peace and reassurance. ...going on 30, no longer feeling like you're invincible, everyone is getting married and living a completely different kind of life. I don't want to get old, wondering whether I did everything in life that I wanted to do. This album, Worst Case Scenario, it's the idea that if all else fails, I'll know that at least I was able to do all these amazing things in my life'. Worst Case Scenario is ultimately a public chapter in Elaquent's life, embodying an unhurried yet vibrant form of personal storytelling. It's a soulful and colourful record' he says. I was in a different mindset, it was a challenge to myself. I wanted to expand on previous concepts, and make a record that is about doing things not just to do them, but because it makes sense'. Unabashedly human, and eager to make it count, Elaquent is a reminder to us all that we're here for a good time, not a long time.

The latest in Cold Busted's 7' series - featuring previously digital only cuts now enshrined on wax - comes from accomplished Polish beat-maker Emapea. Known for his contributions to the IWYMI and Bust Free compilations as well as his widely lauded album Seeds, Roots & Fruits, Emapea has been recently selected for inclusion in Mark Farina's next Mushroom Jazz installment. So the time is ripe to get funky and fresh with this prime beat-maker's new 7' single. This one goes out to the B-Boys, as B-Boy Stance' grooves with its '70s-style car chase guitar, feet-shuffling rhythms, horn splashes, and energetic vocal drops. Every B-Boy needs a solid B-side, and here you'll find B-Boy Theme'. This one transports the floor to a raucous block party complete with breakneck scratches and energetic drum loops, alongside '70s funk flourishes that'll get any private dick - who's a sex machine to all the chicks - quickly moving his hips.

This was my first real album. My technical first album had originally been a 9 track EP then I added 5 more songs. Actual Factual Pterodactyl was my first body of work all released at the same time all recorded with my go to engineer Alejandro Sosa' Tello. I was having a lot of fun. I didn't care what anybody thought. I wasn't concerned with concepts. I didn't lay out any plan. I just found hot beats and rapped. I didn't care about any type of sonic or thematic uniformity. All I wanted was for everything to be ill. I found my voice on this album. Before this you could hear my songs and tell who my influences were, but on Actual Factual Pterodactyl all this shit was some straight Homeboy Sandman shit. - Homeboy Sandman

Hip-HopHip-Hop

REPRESSED !!
Ultimate Breaks & Beats was a series of highly DJ-friendly edit compilation LPs that came out 1986-1991, becoming the foundation of sample-based hip-hop, and influencing pop and dance music up through the present day. The series was created by Lenny Roberts, a Bronx-based record collector, and studio editing partner Breakbeat' Lou Flores, who began releasing the compilations on the Street Beat label just as the art of hip-hop sampling was beginning to take shape. DJ records, which soon became ready-made sample sources, had been around since the 70s, but none matched the quality of UBB. The selections were absurdly democratic, aggressively ironic, (and) smartly remixed all the best aspects of hip-hop,' wrote Charles Aaron in a 1995 review of the entire series. Dweebs like me could wander into Music Factory in Times Square and bump into Eric B or Jam Master Jay buying multiple copies of Ultimate Breaks & Beats ... the sound of hip-hop was never the same again.' Breakbeat' Lou Flores is reviving Ultimate Breaks & Beats with a producer series, debuting with an album by Oh No in January 2017. Oh No's 17-track collection was made entirely with sources from the original UBB series.

That part where all the music breaks down to nothing but the essence: Drums and percussion. These are all truly timeless beats that sound as fresh today as they did when the founding fathers like Kool Herc, Bam, Flash and Hollywood were catching them for the first time in community centers throughout the city. We've edited and extended these breaks for maximum effect on the dance floor - so you don't have to. Enjoy!

Will Syl Johnson ever run out of soul No way, baby. He's got a bottomless supply! Syl's inspiring voice and his mighty band, the Pieces of Peace, are a match made in soul heaven. Hit songs One Way Ticket To Nowhere' and Get Ready' are just two of the highlights from this LP, adding to his sky high stash of smashes. They're joined by a super-funky Annie Got Hot Pants Power,' the uplifting We Do It Together,' and Thank You Baby,' and revivals of Jackie Wilson's That's Why,' and the Temptations' The Way You Do The Things You Do,' transformed so completely that you'd swear they were written specifically for Syl.

The San Francisco Bay Area tradition is as one of those magical centers of musical energy, sending out waves of jazz, psychedelia, rock and funk into the ears of the world. The M-Tet carry on that tradition. Featuring Joe Baer Magnant on guitar, Gary Pitman on Hammond organ, Chris Lujan on bass and Michael Reed on drums, the M-Tet have for the past few years been honing their own very special sonic blend. The M-Tet has managed to wrap up the entire history of Hammond-led groups, from their earliest days when jazz and R&B were wrestling in urban barrooms, through the soulful bookends of Booker T and the MGs and the funky Meters, and into the future, yet never losing sight of their roots. Here, with their new release, the M-Tet offers up fourteen statements of the groove guaranteed to please everyone from the dusty-fingered connoisseur to the Friday night good-timer looking for something to shake it to.

TRLP9062
Tramp Records
12inch02.05.201702.MAY.17

Hip-HopR & BSoul

Much interest domestically and abroad has been generated over the years about an indie soul label in San Diego, CA called Musette Records, whose short life span (1965-1968) only produced less than 20 singles, and no full albums. More than 40 years later, Musette would achieve the collectible status among record buyers of northern soul, who recognize and appreciate the R&B grooves that pulsated on these now extremely rare singles.

Musette Records was not started as a true record label, but as a sideline project and reported tax write-off for then prominent Black doctors in San Diego. After jointly putting up the start-cost, each doctor would additionally put up the money to sponsor a Musette artist. In turn, the doctor would be given the production credit, even though he had absolutely nothing to do with the resulting sessions.

One of the earliest singles on Musette was by Lani Groves, which later achieved fame as part of Stevie Wonder's background singing group, Wonderlove in the 70s. Ervin Rucker, whose actual name was Ervin Groves, was the Hawaiian father of Lani Groves. He started out as a pianist and composer in the 1950s. After he released his sole single on Musette he changed his name to Big Daddy Rucker in the late 60s. At the same time he founded his own GME label on which Little Mary Staten and Dede Copeland released those songs which you find here.

With literally no sales, airplay or distribution, the doctors collectively tossed in the towel and closed the label in the late 1960s. Despite its short existence, Musette Records in San Diego was one of the most important soul labels of the day. The label's artists all had promise and a vision but they could not fulfill their dream. This collection helps to preserve the history of the San Diego soul sound.

Key selling points:

- all songs appear legitimately licensed for the very first time on CD/digital

- the vinyl LP comes with a full album download code

- 8-page CD-booklet and vinyl LP contain detailed liner notes and label scans of rare 45rpm singles

Hip-HopSoulPopElectro

Bringing together infectious pop hooks with a wash of synthesizers, drum machines and heavy guitars, 'Swans' is a brooding, experimental pop single announcing a bold new talent

White Kite is the brainchild of Louis Shadwick, who wrote and produced 'Swans' in the flat and home studio he shares in London with twins Tom and Will Dunning (guitar and bass). Shadwick explains that the track is about trying to choose between two different kinds of love... how the grass always seems greener when desire takes over, and how you try to justify that weakness to yourself".

Best Fit, who describe it as "a heady concoction, with super-smooth vocals and fingerclicks flitting about above a mercury-like melee of synths and melody... The end is result is simply stunning." 'Swans' was mixed by Matt Wiggins at The Church Studios, Crouch End.
