This time producer Bazza Ranks (Dirty Dubsters) has enlisted UK Reggae/Dancehall/Junglist Veteran Top Cat on the B-Side for a fun rework of a classic Riddim.

With a musical CV that includes names like Joe Bataan, Alice Russell, Mark de Clive-Lowe and The Quantic Soul Orchestra, as well as the world beating outfit The Bamboos, it's not surprising this latest CO3B album has generated huge interest even prior to its' release. Their first Freestyle album 'Baked, Broiled or Fried' featured the group in a hardcore funk groove but on 'Soul Messin' sees the sound, feel and influences widened further with some quite magical results. Versatile singer Kylie Auldist (Tru Thoughts Recordings) opens proceedings on the deep funk groove of 'Push It Up' but it is the Freestyle 45 'This Girl' (FSR7057) that provides the mellow, beautiful and incredibly catchy vocal highlight of the entire collection, shimmering horns ride over this laid back, future deep soul classic. We don't yet know what Gary Numan will make of CO3B's version of his 80's synth pop hit 'Cars' (CD only) but Jake Masons organ playing (including simultaneously supplying the super funky bass lines via his Hammond foot pedals and left hand) takes this track in a direction no one was expecting! Drummer and top notch singer Fallon Williams provides his gritty, searing voice on 'Hole In My Pocket' and 'Seen Through Your Disguise' sounding very much like US soul legend Robert Moore and the band display their versatility whilst doffing their caps in the direction of The Meters on the numbers 'Dog Wash' and 'Piranha' The down tempo, moody album closer 'The Proving Grounds' (CD only) once again shows the groups expanding musical textures and rounds off 'Soul Messin' the bands most varied and accomplished recording so far.

'Jardín' is Gabriel Garzón-Montano's debut album, out January 2017 on Stones Throw Records. Gabriel Garzón-Montano's formidable skills have come to fruition on his Stones Throw debut. 'This album came out of wanting to make music that reminds people how beautiful life is and how delicate their heart is,' he said. 'I've always wanted to make music that is healing, comforting, and funky. I named the album 'Jardín' hoping for it to create a space for healing when people put it on.
'A garden is full of life, growth and beauty,' Gabriel said of choosing that unifying image as the title for his new album. 'It makes me think of green and white and all the colors as they appear in different flowers.' That vivid spectrum bursts forth on 'Jardín' itself and the album contains references to fruit of all sorts, sour mango, juicy tangerines and sweet peaches.

GTA FUNK is both a reaction to and a reflection of the 'Toronto' sound, conceived during KEI-LI's move from the suburbs of Mississauga to the city of Toronto.

The vast multiculturalism of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has given birth to a sonic diversity that goes far beyond the signature OVO sound associated with the city. With the world finally tuning in, this EP also enlists the help of fellow artists like Robotaki, Falcxne, Kemi Ade and Christopher Blacc, which allows him to showcase a funkier side to the city that the world hasn't been acquainted with yet.

KEI-LI started producing at the age of 13, informed by his interest in beatboxing and funkstyles popping. After stumbling upon neo-soul, he immediately discovered his musical direction, with Musiq and D'Angelo as his inspirations. While these musical foundations shine brightly throughout GTA Funk, KEI-LI has managed to forge a sonic aesthetic that is entirely his own.

There is an evident struggle with finding an authentic place as an Asian artist within the continuum of funk, soul, and hip hop musical traditions. Hence, the visual branding behind GTA Funk is inspired by the intersection of these two cultures: Kung Fu and hip hop.

Smokecloud records latest release features contributions from two label stalwarts, Osmose and The Silver Rider. The latter kicks things off with I Wanna Be', a rolling, soft touch head-nodder that fuses elements of a tactile soul cut with hypnotic, pitched-down house beats and filter sweeps. Osmose's Trust', turns a classic Motor City soul cut into a smooth, toe-tapping Beatdown shuffler. Limited vinyl only release in a hand stamped natural chipboard jacket.

Fresh for 2017 is the first release from Will Sessions own Sessions Sounds label. First up is a collaboration with Detroit legend Amp Fiddler (Parliament/Funkadelic), a single featuring two songs from their forthcoming collaborative LP. Lost Without You is a modern boogie anthem featuring the narrative lyrics of Amp Fiddler, the on point background vocals of the Dames Brown, and the tight performance and production of Will Sessions. Seven Mile is a hard hitting soul track that takes you on a lyrical ride through Detroit,featuring lush strings and hard hitting breaks.

Sleekly bumptious, with brilliant musicianship and classy arrangements, dosed with jazz and funk (by way of Kool And The Gang), easily traversing ballads and booty-shakers... just the kind of thing Wayne Henderson was doing across the Pacific at the time with At Home productions, for Side Effect, The McCrarys and co.

As part of our 10 years anniversary this year after starting the label back in 2006 Mukatsuku is proud to release the remastered holy grail instrumental long version co produced by Tommy Stewart of 'Brotherson' from Atlanta USA resident Ojeda Penn with the other version on the flip on a 180 gram 12 inch single There were two versions of the album Happiness on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later they recut the album with a much shorter version adding strings and vocals.
The former version is now being sold up to £500 so this 12 is a welcome release to the reissue market. According to Mr Penn this is the first time either version has been reissued officially and Mukatsuku after many years of discussion is glad to finally be in a position to finally put out both versions on one phat 12''

The mysterious Cornhusker unearths two obscure DJ-only specials. The A side marries 70s soul (familiar to Westwood listeners back in the day) with Philly street-corner vocals that keener cinephiles may be able to place. The B side adds a beat to a soulful sunshine-imbued anthem that will ring a bell with fans of J-Dilla productions,making it a must for outdoor gatherings.

The return of one of the UK's finest vocalists with an album that once again combines gospel-tinged power with soulful subtletly. All four singles from Shaun's 2014 album In The Red Room' entered the UK Airplay Top 40 chart, and the first two singles from Evergreen' - the powerful dance track When The Love Is Gone' and ballad Love Shine Down'- have continued that run.

From his first recording with D-Influence at the tender age of 17, Shaun Escoffery has been one of the UK's finest vocal talents - a singer with a glorious Isleys/Curtis Mayfield falsetto. Along the way he has enjoyed support from Elton John - who has hailed Shaun as one of his favourite new artists - and actor Idris Elba, one of his oldest friends.

All but one of the songs - a cover of Eurythmics' Here Comes The Rain Again', which also features UK soul singer Andreya Triana - is co-written by Shaun with producer Gil Cang. On title track Evergreen' he is joined by Joss Stone. Already making waves at radio in the UK is the Seventies-influenced social comment track Ain't No Time', and latest single Healing Me'.

On May 19 Shaun headlines London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire for the first time.

The Japanese singer Aiko Sekiguchi teaming up with Dale Senaga in 1979. The pair flew from Hawaii to California to record the backing tracks at A&M Studios, returning with the reels to Commercial Recording Studio in Honolulu, where they added Aiko's voice and Dale's synthesizer overdubs (and Aiko resumed her residency at the Oasis nightclub).

Fly With Me is a sexy, exotic floater, crossing Love Unlimited-style two-step and West Coast AOR. On the flip, Time Machine is jazzy disco steppers, with a cosmic fizz and a light case of the Gloria Gaynors.

A psychedelic jazz monster from stone cold Estonia' - Frank Raines, Funk Night Recs

Forerunners of underground Estonian jazz-funk since 2013, Estrada Orchestra is a 5 pieces band based in Tallinn. Loosely defined genre borders situate the group of master improvisers into equal parts psychedelic grooves and avant-garde. Although names like Herbie Hancock and Mulatu Astatke pop into mind, the list of kindred spirits of Estrada is far and beyond to find.

Established producer and bass player Misha Panfilov brings his expertise in film music, deep funk and Eastern Bloc obscurities, while Volodja Brodsky smooths things out with fusion influences behind the Clavinet and Rhodes. Both composers are equally obsessed with all that's jazz. Flutist Ilja Gussarov, the solist and shaman of the bunch, orchestrates the crowd into a tribe with a vibe that shines in a live setting. Sashko Petrov on tenor sax and percussion adds the slick soul of a vagabonder to the recipe. Madis Katkosilt of provides a solid backbone with heavy beats and just the right amount of crunch on the drums.

After their self-named début album flew off the shelves in 2015, Estrada Orchestra puts out their 2nd LP Jazzbeatjäätis in 2017 via French imprint Stereophonk. Having gigged in Tallinn Music Week, Positivus and numerous festivals in Estonia the jam band is ready to take on the international stage with support from the likes of Shawn Lee, Greg Foat and Alain Mion.

In the early seventies Leroy 'Mabrak' Mattis studied at Howard University in Washington DC, where he joined a drum and dance group named Contact Africa. Instructor Kojo Fosu introduced him to the talking drum.
'I had only seen it in magazines. He started showing me, and taught me the history of it. Talking drum is the highest level of drum music...
'Going back home in 1973, I knew I was now ready to record. That's when I bumped into an old friend, Bim Sherman. He knew I was a musician, and he was going to King Tubby's studio that day. I tagged along. I recorded rasta repeater drum overdubs on his first hit, 100 Years. This allowed me to re-connect with Tubby...'

Composed of some of the most gifted musicians to ever walk the mean streets of the Jamaican capital, the Kingston All Stars project is a celebration of the heyday of vintage reggae, taking the form of a contemporary music project that pays homage to the glory days of the music's past. Spearheaded by Canadian producer, engineer & musician Moss Raxlen, who was also the driving force behind the great* Rock*steady*: T*he Roots *O*f Reggae feature documentary, and who produced Lynn Taitt'slast-ever works, the Kingston All Stars revolves around a robust core of legendary session players who have been respectively responsible for the lion's share of the greatest Jamaican music ever committed to tape.

Drumming mastermind Sly Dunbar is of course half of the great rhythm duo, Sly and Robbie, who have collaborated with a galaxy of global stars in addition to their exhaustive work for every producer of note in Jamaica; bassist Jackie Jackson joined the Supersonics at the birth of rock steady, became a key player in the reggae revolution as part of the Beverley's All Stars, and has been a touring member of Toots and the Maytals since the early 1970s. Guitarist Hux Brown was a rhythm player in the All Stars and Toots' band, too, and also cut key work for Lee 'Scratch' Perry in the early 1970s; lead axe man Mikey 'Mao' Chung was in the Now Generation with his brother Geoffrey and went on to make a dramatic impact in both the Revolutionaries and the Compass Point All Stars, notably backing Grace Jones and Joe Cocker in the latter. Keyboardist Robbie Lyn was an important session player at Studio One in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was also part of the In Crowd band, as well as Now Gen, which led to work with Peter Tosh, along with Robbie & Sly. And after something of a false start in the mid-60s as a drummer and singer with the Caribbeats, Ansel Collins switched to the keyboards, making an instant splash with 'Night Doctor'(one of Sly Dunbar's first recordings), and then reached the UK pop charts through hit recordings like 'Double Barrel' and 'Monkey Spanner' foWinston Riley, as the musical part of the duo Dave and Ansel Collins. Jimmy Cliff, the Mighty Diamonds, Marcia Griffiths and Black Uhuru are just a few of the noteworthy acts to subsequently benefit from Collins' recording and touring input, and he has enjoyed success as a solo artist too. *

Such a powerhouse of talent would overwhelm most album rosters, but the Kingston All Stars project does not end there: the resident drummer of Lee Perry's Black Ark, Mikey 'Boo' Richards also contributed, as has the sax and trombone team of Everton and Everald Gayle. There are kette drums from Supersad and Calvin, lilting steel pan from Dean Barnett, and guitar and percussion from Roger White and Mossman, as well as Stranger Cole and Trevor McNaughton of the Melodians on backing vocals.*

Ton of the Congos, his singing sparring partner, RZee Jackson, and the original Greenwich Farm Rastaman, Prince Allah, along with the otherwise unknown Alana Jonsana, an elder dread from the downtown trouble zone brought to the project by Mikey Chung. Everything was captured on tape at Mixing Lab studio in Kingston during the winter & spring of 2016, withfurther overdubbing and mixing overseen by Moss in Montreal. With a corresponding dub album in the works and a set of prominent live performances to come in different international locations, this album is only the beginning for the Kingston All Stars, whose continued presence speaks to the general longevity of Jamaican popular music. Long may they continue to reign!

Perry and Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae.

Brand new label Odion livingstone, based out of Lagos, Nigeria, presents its debut release, a reissue of the sought after Nigerian disco LP rarity 'Friday Night' by Livy Ekemezie. I was just out of senior secondary school and I wanted to make an album,' recalls Ekemezie. I was into disco and funk at the time and I was looking for a bass-driven funky sound. The entire idea was to make an album that sounded like something made in London or the U.S. I tried to sound American' but we ended up with something else: a mix of American and Nigerian.' 'Friday Night' was recorded at Goddy Oku's Godiac 24-track recording studio in Enugu, one of the best studios available in Nigeria at the time. It took about 9 months to a year to make the album,' continues Ekemezie. I financed it by myself so I had to resort to friends helping out with loans for session men and studio time. The original LP was released on blue vinyl and that idea came from William Onyeabor. We used his pressing plant and he sold the idea to me. It was different so I said 'why not''

A good concert is like a journey. When it starts you might not know what episodes await you, but in your heart you can feel which direction it will take you in. The Miramode Orchestra offers just this type of enriching, exhilarating experience. Although they meander between coordinates including jazz, electronica and groove, the seven musicians can never be tied down to a single musical location. The sound created by a four-man rhythm section and three horn players is always flavoured by a certain ambition, but never fails to let souls fly and get bodies sweating!

Their debut album Restless City' announced the band as fans of both exploration and experimentation. Why break down barriers when you can simply soar over them - after all, they only exist in the mind. It is therefore no surprise that collaborations have already included not only a range of artists more at home in genres such as hip hop, soul and modern club culture, but also a string ensemble. The latter returned to the studio for the band's forthcoming album Tumbler', which is set for release in early 2017 on Agogo Records. There is a noticeable shift towards more song-like structures: The vocals of Inèz Schäfer, Dan Freeman, Mara von Ferne and the band's keyboard player Eren Solak are taking Tumbler to another level.

At times it is difficult not to hear a touch of Bon Iver, 4hero or Cinematic Orchestra. Yet just as listeners are ready to slot a song into a pigeonhole, the Miramode Orchestra whisks them away to a new, unexpected stop on their journey.

The Infamous is the second studio album by the American Hip Hop duo Mobb Deep, released in 1995. The album features guest apperances from Nas, Wu-Tang Clan members, Reakwon and Ghostface Killah. It marked Mobb Deep's transition from a relatively unknown Rap duo to an influential and commercially successful one.
One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore Rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded.
This is hard, underground Hip Hop that demands to be met on its own terms, with few melodic hooks to draw the listener in. Similarly, there's little pleasure or relief offered in the picture of the streets Mobb Deep paint here. They inhabit a war zone where crime and paranoia hang constantly in the air.

Retrospective For Love is a satisfying new sound for a fresh generation of soul lovers. Hailing from the sun-drenched Mediterranean island of Sicily, vocalist, MC and producer Davide Shorty had a vision to bring back the love and has gathered a tight knit family of similarly soul-centric musicians from his homeland, plus UK-based additions including Parisian co-vocalist Leslie Phillips. With Retrospective For Love, a special force in music was born.

Debut long player 'Random Activities of a Heart', released 10th March 2017 on Wormfood Records, weaves together undeniable, infectious melodies stretching across the stratosphere of Hip-Hop, Soul, and Jazz, whilst adding a little 21st century electronic mastery into the mix.

Akin to the sound D'Angelo might make tripping out on the heavy grooves of The Roots whilst intoxicated by Robert Glasper's experimental spirit, Retrospective For Love take the energy of their influences and move it in new directions. Seemingly innocuous lyrics mask tales of love's most elating and harrowing extremes, capturing the good times, the bad times and all the confusion in between.

Now based in North West London, Retrospective For Love have coined a unique and impressive sound, carefully crafted through the expertise of each individual musician.

Album opener, 'The Picture You Show Me' (produced by Nebbïa), sets the tone, bringing a laid back, comfortable cool to proceedings, with tracks such as 'Water N Dust' (feat. Otty) and 'Wanna Get to Know Ya' (feat. Phat Kat) blending a cool mix of mellow grooves which simmer slowly and burst with flavour.

New single, 'Let Me Know' (feat. Yazmyn Hendrix), is a carefully crafted groove with lyrics loaded with romanticism and nostalgia, allowing their sound to dabble in delirious de-ja-vu bringing you back to the first time you ever felt heartache.

Retrospective For Love is a call for help heard through a vinyl record, because we all need some love in our lives sometimes. 'Producing was a really important sideline,' recalls Bernard Sumner of the Factory era. 'It's OK doing it because although all the groups are skint, you learn a lot and you're helping somebody.'
After 1985 the band focused more on producing their own records, both as New Order and solo projects such as Electronic, Revenge, The Other Two, Monaco and Bad Lieutenant. However in recent years Stephen Morris in particular has remixed several newer artists, notably London industrialists Factory Floor, as well as former Factory workers A Certain Ratio and Section 25.
Bonus tracks on the 3xCD box set include Knew Noise by Section 25, produced by Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton of Joy Division way back in 1979, and the complete 22 minute version of Video 586, recorded by New Order themselves in 1982.
 All tracks (12 on vinyl, 36 on the CD) are newly remastered. The liner notes feature commentary on the tracks by the artists and the members of New Order. Design and packaging are by Matt Robertson/Peter Saville Studio.

'Producing was a really important sideline,' recalls Bernard Sumner of the Factory era. 'It's OK doing it because although all the groups are skint, you learn a lot and you're helping somebody.'
After 1985 the band focused more on producing their own records, both as New Order and solo projects such as Electronic, Revenge, The Other Two, Monaco and Bad Lieutenant. However in recent years Stephen Morris in particular has remixed several newer artists, notably London industrialists Factory Floor, as well as former Factory workers A Certain Ratio and Section 25.
Bonus tracks on the 3xCD box set include Knew Noise by Section 25, produced by Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton of Joy Division way back in 1979, and the complete 22 minute version of Video 586, recorded by New Order themselves in 1982.
 All tracks (12 on vinyl, 36 on the CD) are newly remastered. The liner notes feature commentary on the tracks by the artists and the members of New Order. Design and packaging are by Matt Robertson/Peter Saville Studio.

Nachdem Eminem 2005 nach der Veröffentlichung seines letzten Albums Curtain Call angedeutet hatte, sich ganz aus der Musikszene zurückzuziehen, ist es schon eine kleine Sensation, dass er sich nun mit Eminem Presents The Re-Up mehr als lautstark zurückmeldet.Dass die Slim Shaddy-Posse, zu der neben Eminem bekanntlich auch Schwergewichte wie 50 Cent, D-12, Obie Trice und Lloyd Banks zählen, nicht einfach kampflos das Feld räumen würde, war sowieso klar. Mit Booby Creekwater und Cashis präsentiert man sogar zwei neue, vielversprechende Mitglieder, die auch gleich jeweils einen bzw. zwei Solotrack zum Mixtape beisteuern. Dabei hat Bobby Creekwater mit seinem von DJ Alchemist produzierten Track "There He Is" die Nase leicht vorn, doch auch Cashis zeigt mit "Talkin' All That" und "Everything Is Shady", das mit ihm in Zukunft noch zu rechnen sein wird. Die herausragenden Songs liefern aber diesmal noch weitgehend die etablierten Kräfte ab. Als erstes muss man da natürlich die Allstar-Hymne "We're Back" nennen, bei der aber neben Eminem, Obie Trice und Stat Quo auch schon Cashis und Bobby Creekwater ihre ersten Visitenkarten abgeben dürfen. Zu den weiteren Höhepunkten zählt das bitterböse "The Re-Up" (Eminem und 50 Cent) sowie die erste Singleauskopplung You Don't Know, bei der Eminem, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks und Cashis für mächtig viel Alarm sorgen. Abgerundet wird das von DJ Alchemist zusammengestellte Album mit diversen Remixen, u.a. von Obie Trice's "Pistol Pistol" und 50 Cents "Ski Mask Way", für den Eminem persönlich verantwortlich zeichnet.

One of the best mid-tempo disco raritys (and we mean rare) to come out the Deepfunk scene. When Keb Darge first played 'Party & Get On Down' in the early 2000s in Soho it put a few noses out of joint as it was such a departure from the deepfunk driving take no prisoner sound. True to Keb's Scottish stubbornness and like any real DJ he stuck to his guns and created a dance floor favourite. Athens of the north bring BAB to 12" for the first time, not only that but its a nice wee extended cut transferred direct from the master tapes. No brainier if you got class.
