Hip-HopFunkPopDiscoPunk

Deluxe triple vinyl gatefold edition pressed on colour vinyl with printed inners.

Medium Medium's debut album, The Glitterhouse, was originally released on Cherry Red in October 1981. This reissue also features the Hungry, So Angry,' single version which was produced by Adrian Sherwood at Berry Street Studio in London.

In Sound International magazine Dave Henderson wrote prophetically, It could be one of the most important records of the type to emerge this year and will doubtlessly be revered as a classic after the group have long since departed.'

Also included is a selection of tracks from Cherry Red's 2001 Hungry, So Angry retrospective compilation album, the B-side of the band's debut single on Apt and a previously unreleased demo version of a song from the 1982 Sound-Products EP. It includes a bonus EP featuring previously unreleased tracks from the 2008 Village recording session. All of the various lineups of Medium Medium are represented.

Formed at the end of 1978 Medium Medium's self-described extreme dance music' had reviewers scrambling to draw comparisons with the band's contemporaries and find a label for its post punk sound.

Medium Medium's solid dance rhythms and chaotic, chiming guitar were superficially reminiscent of the Gang of Four and Talking Heads, but Rees's tangential sax playing and Graham's tape and keyboard interjections from the front-of-house mixing desk took Medium Medium in another direction.

Free-blown dubbed-up white funk' was how Max Bell described the sound in England's New Musical Express (NME). At the forefront of the post punk funk movement,' raved Cashbox in the U.S. Billboard magazine opined that this was post punk and post disco dance music.'

Brit Award-winner and Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer, music legend Rick Astley has left an indelible mark on pop-culture since his emergence into the limelight nearly thirty years ago. He has sold over 40 million records, had the UK's biggest selling single of 1987, is the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top Ten, and in 2002, saw his "Greatest Hits" compilation album go gold. On his 7th album - and first studio record released in over a decade 50' (BMG), Astley returns to his musical roots with mighty force. He plays every instrument on the album and penned each track. His key influences and complex understanding of different musical genres are evident in his song writing, which draws from his life and inspirations. At times it's reflective and vulnerable, at others it's uplifting and progressive, but his distinctive, soulful voice remains familiar, enriched by the last decade of increasing time spent touring. Focus tracks on the new album include "Keep Singing", "I Like The Sun", "Angels On My Side" and "This Old House".

Sha-la-das - Those Years Are Over/open My Eyes
DAP1098
Daptone Records
7"-Vinyl22.07.201622.JUL.16

Hip-HopSoul

The first single from Dunham Records' in-house, all male, backing vocal quartet (and Charles Bradley's backing band), The Sha-La-Das, conjures up the memory of a stolen first kiss - a whispered, forbidden vow of young love under the boardwalk at Coney Island.

It's layered with sunny melodies that intoxicate, while the haunting undercurrent slowly pulls you in, like standing on the shoreline at dusk mid-July. A classic songwriting style, for a new generation of vinyl-heads and audio purists, pushes you through the deepest blue in the sky into the seductive violet of night and straight through to first hopes of daybreak. A tapestry of unique voices and personalities, born to meld together, The Sha La Das have been one of the secret ingredients in the recordings of the last two Charles Bradley albums (Victim of Love, Changes).

They've been blips on the radar of keen-eared music enthusiasts for some time now, both as a group and separately. One listen to this beautifully crafted new record and it'll be clear as day: The Sha-La-Das will not be a secret for long.

Various - Dj Spinna Presents The Wonder Of Stevie Vol. 3

2x12inch19.07.201619.JUL.16

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopDisco

The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across the globe, to his iconic solo productions and
remixes. But if you ask him, it's the relationship he's forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder that Spinna considers to be his single greatest achievement. As with most artists of a soulful persuasion, Stevie's music influenced Spinna from the outset,
dictating everything from his approach to writing to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines on his productions. Having gained so much from the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in the form of 'Wonderfull', a series of parties celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the story became somewhat surreal for Spinna, suddenly finding himself joined onstage in
Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie himself, a spine-tingling moment even when viewed on YouTube. An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album represents a celebration of the life, music and cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers can boast Spinna's understanding of Stevie's back catalogue, not to mention the large number of
songs he's written for other artists over the years. Featuring stunning cover versions you may well have never heard before alongside songs many of us had no idea he'd written, Spinna's vast knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for
Stevie's music shines with every selection. As both a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is nobody better placed to compile this wonderful document of Stevie Wonder's music, inspiration
and influence.

Jorginho Gomes Pessanha (1931-1981) released two solo albums in the 1970s. Born and raised in the Parada De Lucas suburb of Rio De Janiero, Jorginho Pessanha aka Jorginho' was the son of the founder of the United Samba School Chapel. Jorginho ultimately joined the hugely influential Imperio Serrano School of Composers under the tutelage of Imperian President Moacyr Rodrigues, who was part of Brazil's delegation to the First Black Arts Festival in Senegal in 1966. After a five-year hiatus, Canadian electronic music producers MSTRKRFT (Jesse F. Keeler & Al-P) are back.
Driven by distorted drum beats, hauntingly hypnotic synths and booming cinematic soul, OPERATOR immediately captivates.

It's probably the most accurate reflection of how we work on stage,' says Jesse. We had to be very creative with very few elements. It took time to figure that out.'

2011 was the last time we heard from MSTRKRFT with the release of the single Back in the USSA', following their Juno award-winning debut album The Looks in 2006. MSTRKRFT have released official remixes for everybody from Katy Perry and Kylie Minogue to Wolfmother, Justice and Bloc Party. 2009's Fist Of God boasted collaborations with the likes of John Legend, Ghostface Killah, E-40, N.O.R.E, Lil' Mo and more as it predicated an eventual crossover between hip-hop and electronic music on the horizon.

Naram And Art Feat Tonto Irie - No Friend Fi Dem
CR7005
Cubiculo Records
7"-Vinyl05.07.201605.JUL.16

Hip-HopReggae

We are very happy to announce the latest Cubiculo release featuring certified legend Tonto Irie and new generation production duo Naram and Art!
After years without releasing any records, veteran MC Tonto Irie returns to the world of vinyl with 'No Friend Fi Dem'. Under the name of Tonto Ranking, he partnered with Danny Dread in the 80's and the two of them spearheaded the rise of the Black Star Soundsystem. Tonto Irie would later help King Jammy's set reach new heights by working with all of Jammy's Posse including Wayne Smith, John Wayne, Chacka Demus, Half Pint, Admiral Bailey, Tullo Tand and many more.
We became instant fans of Naram and Art the first time we heard their music. Since then we've had the pleasure of having them on Subactive's 'Taking Over EP' with a killer remix and now we're finally releasing a record with them. 'Ripper Riddim' is inspired by the obscure digital reggae music of the 80's, where fat, dirty basslines and heavy skanks are the main dish of the day.
The record's artwork is also inspired by this era of Reggae music and limited to 500 copies on green coloured vinyl and hand stamped sleeve.

Count Ossie & The Rasta Family - Man From Higher Heights
SJRLP331
Soul Jazz Records
12inch14.07.201614.JUL.16

Hip-HopReggae

Soul Jazz Records are releasing Count Ossie and The Rasta Family's long lost reggae album 'Man From Higher Heights' (originally released in 1983), digitally remastered and with full original artwork. This release follows on from the earlier release of Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari 'Tales of Mozambique' (1975), also by Soul Jazz Records. Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, somewhere between the last Mystic Revelation album and the 1983 official release of 'Man From Higher Heights', it remains unclear whether this album is a mixture of original recordings overlayed with additional players, or Ossie's post-Mystic Revelation players remaining true to the spirit of Count Ossie (who had died in a car crash in 1976). Either way, it is a fascinating and successful blend of heavyweight Rastafarian roots rhythms and drumming alongside deep jazz improvisation and tripped out psychedelic fuzz guitar. Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley's promotion of the faith internationally in the 1970s. Count Ossie and the Group's Man From Higher Heights remains one of the most elusive of his highly progressive Rastafarian inspired recordings, the final release in Count Ossie's career.

Dee Edwards - (i Can) Deal With That
SB7020D
Soul Brother Records
7"-Vinyl13.04.201613.APR.16

Hip-HopSoul

Dee Edwards '(I Can) Deal With That' has been one of the most in demand Soul records for the past 25 years.
It was originally released as a 45 on the small independent Detroit De-To label in 1977, and that version is a killer 2-Step Soul/ Rare Groove Sista Funk groove featuring an incredible vocal from Dee. An alternative version also released the same year with strings sweetening it (using the same catalogue number), this version has been in demand on the Crossover Soul scene. Original copies of either version of the single now change hands for around £250.

Soul Brother Records are delighted to re-release this wonderful track on a limited edition 7' for Record Store Day 2016 coupling both versions on one single for the first time. There will be 750 hand numbered copies produced for RSD. This release is likely to be the most demanded 45 that Soul Brother Records have ever issued, and is sure to sell out quickly in the same way that all the previous RSD 45's on the label have done.

RCA

Hip-HopSoul

blackSUMMERS'night is Maxwell's first album in seven years. It is the second installment in a musical trilogy that began with 2009's platinum-selling, BLACKsummers'night, which debuted at #1 and was one of the year's most critically lauded releases. The new album comes 20 years after his genre-defining debut, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.

The singer and songwriter recorded blackSUMMERS'night in New York over the last several years. 'I'm working with all of the same people on the new album. It's always been a family type of thing, and I think that that's what, maybe, has made it special. It feels, to me, even better than what we did twenty years ago,' he said recently.

Maxwell redefined classic soul music in April of 1996 when he released his critically acclaimed debut on Columbia, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. It earned Grammy nominations, double platinum status and RIAA gold for the single, 'Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder).' The platinum albums Embrya (1998) and Now (2001) followed. After eight years, 2009's BLACKsummers'night debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won two Grammys, including Best R&B Album. To date, Maxwell has achieved 13 gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA.

MICHAEL 'CRAZY' CAMPBELL and RAYMOND MONETTE first caught our attention as singer/songwriters Mike & Ray on their debut 45 'If Only You Knew', recorded in Detroit in 1966. A year later they struck gold, well at least in Wigan, with their self-penned, Northern Soul anthem 'Man Without A Woman' featured here. A name change to The Abstract Reality found them on Shelly Harris' Sport label with 'Love Burns Like A Fire Inside'. The pair teamed up with Bob Babbitt and Andrew Smith to form the psych band Scorpion and released one, eponymous album for Tower Records. Mike went on to become a Hollywood actor scoring parts in Beverly Hills Cop and Total Recall and now lives with his family in Wyoming selling cars. Ray joined the Motown group Rare Earth with whom he still performs today.
Our chosen B-side features the monumental instrumental 'Interplay' written and performed by the unlikely soul duo Derek Smith and Ray Cohen.

Calypso, Highlife, Juju & Apala: Popular Music And The Birth Of Independent Nigeria 1960-63

Soul Jazz Records' new Nigeria Freedom Sounds! features a stunning selection of material spotlighting the vibrant musical scene in Nigeria at the start of the 1960s. With a wealth of musical and cultural history and newly independent from Britain, Nigerian music during this era was complex, diverse and forward-thinking, with musicians as excited in exploring their country's own musical lineage with styles such as Juju and Apala as they were in adapting and absorbing outside influences such as Ghanaian Highlife, Caribbean Calypsos and Mambo and more.
This album features many of the defining artists of this time who helped shape the Nigerian musical scene. Artists include I.K. Dairo and his Blue Spots, Haruna Ishola and his Group, E.C. Arinze, Sammy Akpabot and His All Stars, Godwin Omobuwa and his Soundmakers, Ganiyu Kale and His Guinea Mambo Orchestra and many more.
Few nations on earth are as diverse as Nigeria, and the wide assortment of Nigerian music styles collected on this album reflect the country's rich variety of cultures. Western-influenced dance music, played on European instruments such as guitar, brass, and woodwind sits alongside traditional musical styles, made with indigenous instruments such as the talking drum, marimba, or obo. And there is also religious musical styles first brought to Nigeria by European Christians and Islamic traders from North Africa. And of course, there are points where these musical styles overlap, merging into one another to create unique new sounds.
This album is released in two formats, as CD and as heavyweight gatefold double vinyl edition. The CD includes a large outsize 48-page book containing extensive sleevenotes, original photography, artist biographies, as well as selection of Nigerian adverts celebrating its independence and original artwork from some of the rare original Nigerian 45s on which this music was first (and only ever) released. The heavyweight gatefold 2xLP comes with full sleevenotes and download code.

THE GLORIES were formed in New York in 1966 by lead singer Frances Yvonne Gearing and producer Bob Yorey. They were a trio - Gearing, Mildred Vaney and Delores Brown - and signed to Date Records in '67. Only their debut disc, the uptempo 'I Stand Accused', saw any chart action, peaking at No. 74 in the Hot 100. Our chosen side, 'I Worship You Baby' was released to little acclaim in July 1968 but remains a Northern Soul anthem. The group were signed to Hi Records in '72 and became Quiet Elegance.
THE OPALS were another trio - Rose Addison, Myra Tillison and Tootsie - signed to Okeh Records in 1963 by Carl Davis. They released only 4 singles during their brief tenure and we spotlight their superb version of 'You're Gonna Be Sorry' from Aug '64, recorded a year later by label mate Billy Butler.
