Soul Express - Determination
TR214
Tramp Records
12inch05.08.201605.AUG.16

Hip-HopR & BSoulBeats

This re-issue of The Soul Express' superheavy tune was long overdue. Funk record collectors probably prefer "Determination Part 2" with its almost 1 minute long drum break while "Determination Part 1" may even appeal to open minded northern soul DJs. The sheer quality of these two sides paired with the rarity will guarantee that the 500 pressed copies will sell out quickly.

The Do Yo Thangs - One Plus One
HS027S7"
HOPE STREET RECORDINGS
7"-Vinyl12.09.201612.SEP.16

Hip-HopR & BSoulPopJazz

One Plus Oneis the five track debut EP by Melbourne bandThe Do Yo Thangs- a collection of sensual slow jams and bumping future soul dominated by rich, four-voice harmonies.

One Plus One is equal parts performance and programming, drawing from a broad palette of live instruments and electronic sounds. At the front, Hugh and Audrey alternate lead vocal duties, supported by harmony singers Maddie Otto and Tiaryn Griggs. Backing them, the guitar sound is classic soul but the plethora of synthesizers and 808 kick drums is definitely not, nodding equally to Vangelis or Hiatus Kaiyote. The more you listen, the more intricacy is discovered. The writing uses jazz elements and odd rhythmic devices, but it's all tucked away - there's nothing that intrudes into the foreground or interferes with the song's abilities to speak to an audience.

- Debut release from HopeStreet Recordings latest signing, The Do Yo Thangs.

- Features a limited run 7" vinyl pressing with 'One Plus One' and 'Indecisive'. Includes full artwork cover.

- 7" includes digital download of the full 5-track EP.

- 'One Plus One' accompanied by an official video clip.

2LP REPRESS - 1000 UNITS FOR WORLDWIDE.

Strut presents a new vinyl repress of the first volume of the landmark 'Next Stop Soweto' compilation series, placing the spotlight on lost and rare South African music of the 1960s and '70s.

Compiled by Duncan Brooker and Francis Gooding, Volume 1 hones in on the trademark mbaqanga or township jive sound that became the hugely popular music of the day for black South Africans. Born as a reaction to the apartheid regime's campaign to rid black culture of kwela music during the 1960s, the energetic new electric sound mixed domestic regional styles with soul and jazz and spawned a host of new stars like Mahotella Queens, Mahlathini and Izintombi Zasi Manje Manje.

'Next Stop Soweto' traces the progression of the music from the early male groaner' male vocals to the arrival of rich female vocal harmony groups between 1968-1975, with guitar styles becoming progressively more percussive during the mid-'70s. Much of the music featured was originally released on small run 45s and was released for the first time outside of South Africa on this compilation.

Since the release of this album, the series has extended to four volumes covering South Africa's soul combos, jazz greats and '70s Afro rock era and has become the first dedicated contemporary series since Earthworks' 'Indestructible Beat of Soweto' albums to explore the country's rich and varied music culture in the townships. The best-selling title in the 'Next Stop Soweto' series to date,

Hip-HopHip-Hop

J-Zone, self-proclaimed jack of all trades, master of zero,' may be familiar to you for any one of his six lives: Indie hip-hop's class clown, an offkilter producer with his own identifiable style, a frustrated music business casualty who penned a nervy memoir about the life of the working class musician (Root For The Villain), a tongue-in-cheek, encyclopedic music journalist, a late-blooming drummer with a knack for channeling the spirit of classic break beats or a DJ with a deep love for funk 45s. On his seventh solo album (and twelfth overall), Fish-n-Grits, J-Zone visits all the stops of an artistic and musical journey that spans well over two decades. Comprised of both limited edition 7' vinyl-only releases (dating back to 2014) and all new material, Fish-n-Grits is equal parts vocal and instrumental. The New York native uses his rap time to pick fights with the delusional state of the music industry, gentrification, the good and bad of nostalgia, police brutality, political correctness and hiphop's generational conflicts, but never without his signature brands of humor and sarcasm intact. As a student of samplers, drummer, multi-instrumentalist and collector of archaic studio gear, Zone was able to chef Fish-n-Grits into his most sonically versatile album to date. A stew of dirty, funky live drumming, bizarre samples, pulsating percussion and menacing bass that stretches in vibe from a circa 1969 funk instrumental to a twisted, analog interpretation of trap music, Fish-n-Grits has moments inspired by just about everyone. It's obvious that The Meters, Prince Paul, The Incredible Bongo Band, Project Pat, Kool and the Gang, Public Enemy, George Clinton, Kool Keith, Bernard Purdie and Tim Dog have all carved out space in Zone's music library, but the sound remains his own. J-Zone's zany alter egos (Chief Chinchilla and Swagmaster Bacon) also get booth time, as do long time collaborators Al-Shid, Prince Paul and Has-Lo. Serving as a bridge between Zone's 2013 comeback offering (Peter Pan Syndrome) and a forthcoming group project with Prince Paul and Sacha Jenkins (SuperBlack), Fish-n-Grits captures his development as an artist and musician, with occasional nods to the past.

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Hyperspeed jazz drum cut-ups and jolting guitar stabs, meditative sub bass pools and fertile spoken word poetry: these are stained glass panes in the church that is multi-instrumentalist Jon Bap. What Now, Bap's debut album, combs regions of free jazz, funk, hip-hop, gospel, psych rock, drum 'n' bass, and ambient to form outsider soul music as warm as it is unheard of. The naturally delirious sound of What Now began with the drum work of prodigy Mike Mitchell (drummer of Stanley Clarke's trio). Bap tracked Mitchell's slinky, spastic drums last year when he passed through Buffalo, Bap's hometown. Bap sat with the recordings for months listening for nuances within Mitchell's improvisations before editing the rhythm tracks that became the basis of the oblique pop songs of What Now. Lyrically, the album speaks to what it's like to be an artist in 2016. Bap finds strength in opposition to his process ( It takes a background to have a foreground.') Yin and yang appear and reappear thematically (called out by name in penultimate track 'Yin'). 'Ghost In The Wintertime' declares that now means now ( I don't want to waste time / Let's go'). We all just want to do what we all want to do. Jon Bap just wants to make music. Beneath choral arrangements, poems of friends in faraway places, field sound collages, and sunfaded surf guitar chords, the heart of What Now is a bold spiritual interrogation of the present. But the gorgeous instrumental ephemera are ornamental. The question (What Now) is real.

Lung Dart are Tim Clay and James Rapson - together they make textural, layered music that's deeply soulful and melancholic, utilising live instrumentation as well as field recordings captured on their phones ranging from sounds of the bowels of Wembley Stadium at 4am to the bellowing wind coming off the Leicestershire hills and broken machinery. The result is a collage of sound inspired by the likes of Arthur Russell, Bjork, Lonnie Holley and Scott Walker, with hints of Connan Mocakasin, Windy & Carl and James Blake all influenced and shaped by the world at large.Sat at home, the pair also spend hours trawling through YouTube for inspiration, utilising samples ranging from clips of Alan Lomax archive footage to ASMR video. The pair say, We wanted the freedom to explore as many musical directions as we could, representing both the abundance of material at our fingertips, whilst also illustrating the sense of claustrophobia, detachment and fickleness that can easily coincide when flicking between 100 tabs on your screen or finding yourself 2 hours deep into a YouTube rabbit hole.'

Life is a cruel joke...were you waiting for a punch line MindsOne connects with Belgium's DJ Iron on their newest endeavor, Phaseology,' and aim to examine the bigger picture. Why are we here Where do we go in the end Is that an SP1200 Damn right. Is life too complex to condense into 40 minutes Challenge accepted. First, don't look at life as the sum of its events. Think about it as a series of phases. Next, combine MindsOne's handcrafted lyrical artistry with DJ Iron's jazz infused boom-bap. Combine, two parts cynicism, one part mysticism, and add water. Then, sprinkle in a guest appearance by the sage John Robinson, throw in a heavy dose of turntablism from DJ Iron and MindsOne's DJ Noumenon and Slim Deluxe, and the theory is complete. Phaseology' is the follow-up to MindsOne's 2014 critically acclaimed release, Pillars,' produced by Kev Brown. Journey along as Tronic and KON Sci explore the phases of life and create scenes, both real and imagined, to give listeners a bird's-eye view. Relive childish fantasies and revisit irrational fears. Go to work and act like an adult. Ponder your existence and reflect on your life. Spoiler: It's all gonna end. But not today. We're born alone, we die alone, etc. Talk to God if it's too complex.

Redefinition Records reserved it's 100th release (RDF100) for one of indie hip hop's most obscure yet sought after groups, Y Society. Need proof Just try to find a copy of their '07 debut LP Travel At Your Own Pace' for less than a hundred bucks. Good news... they're back. With almost a decade of radio silence since their debut, the group's latest is a 45 featuring 2 heavy hitting tracks and tons of replay value. MC Insight the Truncator and DJ/Producer Damu The Fudgemunk exhibit their talents in true school fashion, complete with carefully curated samples, energetic scratching and potent rapping. Y doesn't slack conceptually either, Know the Meaning' is an essay raising the debate on how musicians and their art are valued in the modern world. Insight challenges the listener to disprove his thesis while speaking of experiences, eyewitness accounts and using some the biggest rap icons as examples to make his case. The B-side is a fan favorite, Rather Unique 2, released digitally in 2008 and available now on vinyl for the first time in a new & improved mix. Rather Unique, pays homage to AZ's 1994 Pete Rock produced original of the same name, in Damu's reworked track and poetic commentary Insight is known for. Packaged in a full color sleeve designed by Joe Buck (De La Soul), Y Society's first 45 is one for the collection.

Boleros Valses y Mas is the Stones Throw debut from Frankie Reyes, the alias of Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker who also records as GB (Gifted & Blessed). Comprised mostly of popular latin standards from the mid-twentieth century, the source material was reworked by Reyes under an approach he's dubbed technoindigenous studies' which explores his Puerto Rican heritage through modern electronics. The inspiration for Boleros Valses y Mas formed when Los Angeles radio collective Dublab invited Gabriel to participate in an event themed specifically around Latin American modernism. I thought about how I might capture the essence of this theme using my instrument of choice, the synthesizer. What came to mind was to cover some of the classic Latin American compositions that I grew up hearing around me and have grown to love as I've gotten older, most of them in the bolero style but a few in the waltz, son, and even mariachi style.' By using audio-to-MIDI and sheet music-to-MIDI processing Gabriel has recontextualized these popular tracks easily overheard while visiting any of Los Angeles' predominantly Latino neighborhoods with a single Oberheim synthesizer. By removing the lyrics, the emphasis remains on the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic aspects of these classics, many still sung by Latin American artists today.

Get involved. - Mistah Bohze (Southside Deluxe / II Tone Committee) - "Yugen is said to mean a profound, mysterious sense of the beauty of the universe... and the sad beauty of human suffering'. Yugen suggests that beyond what can be said but is not an allusion to another world. It is about this world, this experience." The Renegades are extremely ecstatic to bring you the long awaited juggernaut of sound that is the 'Yugen' LP - by Jetsam (A.K.A Konchis) the consistent DJ and producer of quality and sheer originality with a proven track record for his excessive skill and talent - with a highly generous 10 tracks ready to show your sound-system what it has been missing all these years. The journey begins at 'Crystal Oblivion' a fitting intro with a gentle ambience exposing a slow but steady stream of colliding strings harmoniously weaving underwater, lo-fi sounds together with an underlying, deceptively subtle yet consciously apt beat which carries this heart warmer to it's melody driven conclusion leading us almost without warning into 'Ephemeral' which keeps us snorkeling underwater, gently churning out deep melodies and tugging heartstrings as it drops singular notes to create unexpected crescendos which collide a vast array of sounds together - seemingly discordantly - whilst knotting beautifully into this stunning soundscape. 'Cathedrals' perfects the off-beat rhythm in a dubstep movement forging it's own stream of consciousness which fits the dance-floor as it pulses the body into a steady trance-like state whilst maintaining a firm grip on the atmosphere of the LP without repeating itself. 'Celestial Mechanics' sounds like the alien chant from a group of lost children discarded on a planet long ravaged by time with it's repetitive call intro which appears sporadically as if fighting not to be forgotten. Meshing layers of string melodies to rising wind sheets over schizophrenic sporadic keys breaks us down into a warble bass concluding the song and re-introducing you to the planet you thought you had escaped. Lucky for us then that 'End Of Stars' delivers just the follow up we want as it casts us deeper in an ambient, HD soundscape of pure meditation. Its rhythm, key changes and layers of subtle, indiscernible yet perfectly tuned sounds take you to a place you want to remain in a lot longer than the few minutes you are given. However, our journey must continue and this time we enter a world of glass sounds with hints of digital, offbeat subtleties and pondering piano notes which reverberate in 'USHDKNW'. 'Mermaids' gives us a 2 sided delivery of industrial sounds and eerie echoing coupled with a hopeful melody which forms the crucible of this whole journey as it portrays a strange, off the beaten track break from the sweetness heard so far. 'Under The Lake (Cure me)' is a stunner carrying on from its predecessor building up a trance-like haven of echo chambers before leading this sea worthy juggernaut back to 'Shore', its hopeful meadow of sound complete with birds chirping throwing us down into some wonky off beat claps in a song reminiscent of 'Herbie Hancock' style ponderings and bringing us nearer to the end in a gentle lull of strings. 'Yugen' brings the album to a close in a whirlwind of snowy, oriental soundscapes and delicate percussion. This whole LP is an ambient bass journey perfect for long roads and one you will rewind as I did several times today alone.

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopJazz

Spanish jazz-funk / prog-psych holy grail from 1976 featuring the crème de la crème of Spain's session musicians of the time.

Pepe Sánchez is a real legend when talking about drumming in Spain. From his beginnings in the 60s jamming with Pedro Iturralde, Tete Montoliu and Vlady Bas at the influential Whisky Jazz Club in Madrid, to recording in Miami with Diana Ross or Barbra Streisand, from working under the wings of Rafael Trabucchelli, Waldo de los Ríos, Augusto Algueró and Mancini to playing live with Barry White...Not forgetting his incursions in progressive rock with Araxes or doing session work for seminal Spanish albums like Gipsy Rock' by Las Grecas among others.

Pepe and his group of friends (Manuel Gas, Juan Carlos Calderón, Pepe Ébano, Tito Duarte, Juan Cano...) were the most requested Spanish session musicians of the time, appearing in countless recordings. In the mid-70s, he was approached by the Marfer label: the idea was to create an instrumental album based on Flamenco music and Spanish folklore but with a modern approach, adding electric guitars, electric bass, drums...Pepe recruited some his friends, all of them top session musicians with a jazz / pop background and the result was Regresión', his first solo album, released in 1976. It's an incredible fusion of jazz, funk, rock, flamenco and psychedelic / progressive sounds highlighted by the powerful drumming of Pepe, the wicked fuzz-wah guitar of Carlos Villa (Vainica Doble, Las Grecas), the sax / flute of jazz giant Pedro Iturralde and Manolo Morales (Jayme Marques, Bebu Silvetti...), the piano of Eddy Guerin (Tete Montoliu, Santisteban, Jayme Marques, Manuel Gas...), the trumpet of Juan Cano (Vlady Bass, Juan Carlos Calderón...) and José Luis Medrano (Dolores, Márquez...), the percussion of Pepe Ébano (Elkin & Nelson, Manuel Gas, Camarón, Max B, Santisteban)...
Includes the monster rare groove /funk track Sentimiento' and more!

Hip-HopHip-Hop

Available again. Note price increase. The contributions of the late Detroit producer James DeWitt Yancey –better known to the world as J Dilla to the world of hip-hop can't be overstated, and nowhere is his legacy more apparent than his work as a member of Slum Village. A founding member of the trio, (Alongside rappers T3 and Baatin) Dilla provided the group's distinctly esoteric, free-wheeling sound, built around winding basslines, quirky drumbeats, subtle low-end frequencies, and classic jazz & soul samples. Against the backdrop of Dilla's rich production, T3 and Baatin's free-flowing style of rhyming would also earn wide critical praise, leading to comparisons as the successors to A Tribe Called Quest. (A label they themselves have rejected.) It's on Slum Village's 1997 studio debut, Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1, that all these elements come together in the most proficient manner. An instant hit among Detroit's underground hip-hop scene, the album seemed to combine all the best elements of the reigning alternative and gangsta styles of hip-hop into one cohesive style that was a hit among critics. Fan-Tas-Tic's influence extended far beyond Detroit, as its sound heavily influenced the sounds of D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and The Roots just to name a few. (Roots drummer ?uestlove has even declared that: "Hands down this album birthed the neo-soul movement.") Ne'Astra Media Group now presents the album reissued on vinyl, for the first time in several years. Every wobbling bass note of J Dilla's production has been preserved and every freestyle line of T3 and Baatin has been re-created, to maintain the legacy of a late-90s rap classic, and the legend of one of hip-hop's greatest beatsmiths.

Hip-HopHip-Hop

The contributions of the late Detroit producer James DeWitt Yancey -better known to the world as J Dilla- to the world of hip-hop can't be overstated, and nowhere is his legacy more apparent than his work as a member of Slum Village. (A label they themselves have rejected.) After the success of Slum's 1997 studio debut, Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1, the group went to work on their follow up. Though the project was completed in '98, label turmoil kept the project on ice until 2000. By the time Fantastic Volume II hit Dilla was well on his way to his status as a hip hop legend having produced cuts for Common, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest and many more. Later works from Slum Village may have had more of an impact sales-wise (in the immediate) but Fantastic Vol. 2 had fans and many critics saying that Slum Village, and Dilla in particular, may single-handedly save rap music.' Perhaps that statement is hyperbole but many consider Fantastic Volume II to be Slum Village's finest work ever to this day. Ne'Astra Media Group now presents the album reissued on vinyl, for the first time in several years. Every wobbling bass note of J Dilla's production has been preserved to maintain the legacy of this hip hop rap classic and maintain the legend of one of hip-hop's greatest beatsmiths.

Vaghe is a man of few words. He wanders, seemingly endlessly, through a lonely, gargantuan labyrinth of concrete and steel, fighting off ghosts and other futuristic nightmares, searching only for something called The Full Stream Ahead. Who is this quiet, determined man and what are these Ghosts he seeks The small communities he finds tucked into the crevices of this towering, dystopic ruin hardly give him leads on his treasure, driving him to find larger enclaves of civilization where people can reveal more about the world he lives in and the quarry he seeks. If Vaghe is going to find the treasure he seeks, he will need more help and information than the inhabitants of these beleaguered outposts can offer. He needs to find a larger cluster of civilization, but he'll have to survive the trip to get there, first... Following his 2014 'Sweet Sixteen', and his 2015 'Abstract Speed + Sound' Other People is pleased to announce The Full Stream Ahead: The Prologue by Turin's Daniele Mana aka Vaghe Stelle. Previously associated with Italian label Gang of Ducks and a current member of production group One Circle with fellow nationals Lorenzo Senni and A:RA, Daniele's roots in the emerging Italian production scene run deep and place him at its center.

Miles From Kinshasa knows how to make an entrance" - The Fader
"A brilliantly confident debut" - Pigeons and Planes
IVRY is the twisted and anthemic debut track from South London artist Miles From Kinshasa. Landing online late last year, the track marked Miles out as a one to watch, named as one of the best releases of the month on i-D and Dazed and Confused.

The follow up track KAYA offers up a darker side to the young artist with its brooding synths, yet despite its intensity is no less infectious.

Both tracks are produced by Miles as is the artwork, cementing him as British music's next great polymath.

Hip-HopFunkPopRock

Totally brilliant and obscure psych era Italian library music. Originally released in 1971 for the microsmall label Vi.Di.Elle, the same label as another psych bomb, "The Black Fire - Cream". Behind the mysterious "The Green Birds" name is a marvellous trio of unsung composers like Franco Bonfanti, Romano Rizzati (Corfull)and Renato Sperduti (Myrval), playing here some really dope jams in the style of the Braen's Machine's Underground LP. The whole album is full of psych effects, synth melodies, wah-wah & fuzz guitars, drum breaks & loungey vibes. Track A4 "Ambiente Elegante" by Franco Bonfanti was compiled in the cultish Speedball Experience in 1996.
