Hank Carbo - Fox In A Mini Skirt / Bad Luck

It's time for another 7" foot-stomping bonanza from Rocafort Records, digging deep into the rich New Orleans repertoire of the Carbo family. All brothers were heavily involved in the 60s Crescent City funk scene, so tight and 'on the one' that it's easy to understand why Hank suspects a bit of plagiarism from the Godfather himself.

"Fox in a mini skirt" is slice of soulful cheek and attitude, based on foxy beauty who once slunk across the dance floor at one of his gigs. Popular on the Northern Soul scene, it matches vocal urgency with a driving beat fuelled along by manic drums, guitars and horns. The irresistible background hey hey hey's and funky funky broadway's make it instantly memorable and immediately danceable.

"Bad Luck" (not to be confused with the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic) is a slower paced funk stinker, screaming out JB horns and wah wah guitars à la 'Ain't it funky now'. In keeping with the depth of New Orleans songwriting, the lyrics are worth a listen and reveal a heartfelt plea "If it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all". In fact, the whole song is based on a spell of unfortunate circumstances involving Hank's sideswiped new car and an erroneous warrant for his arrest. However, the only real crime committed here is that at 2'22", this track is shockingly over too soon!

Raw Soul Express - Best Kept Secret

Athens of the north and Symphoncal Records are proud to present the long lost Raw Soul Express LP in a special limited Vinyl only release. Mastered personally from the original tapes with love. If you don't know what this is then you're in the wrong game, the LP also includes the Full previously unreleased version of their rare-groove and surprisingly rare club classic "The Way We Live" in its full intended format. Solid Ballads are what makes the LP for me but there is not a bad track on there, boogie, funk and Rare-groove, blink and it'll be gone.

The Andy Tolman Cartel - Cypher

For decades, if you wanted to listen to great music all you needed to do was stare at a screen! TV and film soundtracks were often the work of US legends such as Lalo Schiffrin, Oliver Nelson & Quincy Jones, and their Uk counterparts Ronnie Hazelhurst and Alan Hawkshaw, provided the soundtrack to the 60's & 70's at a time when film and TV music was unashamedly funky and featured the ensemble of choice for the jazz arranger.. the big band!

A 21st century musician with comparable skills is Andy Tolman - an astounding bass player, but also highly adept at writing & arranging for a big band and who is heavily influenced by those greatest practitioners of the art. Andy met to Nick van Gelder (the original Jamiroquai drummer) and keyboard guru Carl Hudson whilst doing a run of gigs backing artists like Leon Ware and Jean Carne. Andy played Nick You What! and he asked if he could lay a drum track down and at around the same time Carl offered his services on the record also. Nick went on to drum on the entire album and produce the recordings too.

At the tail end of 2011, when Freestyle Records A&R man Greg Boramans' compilation 'Sounds From The Soul Underground' was released the glorious noise of The Andy Tolman Cartel first came to public attention. The amazing track You What! had one foot in jazz-funk & the other in film & TV themes of the 60's and 70's, found champions in Jazz FM's Peter Young and BBC 6 Musics Craig Charles who both featured it on their radio shows heavily.

Andy himself takes up the story, "After You What! found it's way onto Gregs' compilation he asked me how many more tracks I had, I kind of lied (sorry Greg!) and said a whole albums worth. Having shot my mouth off I thought I had better set about delivering... a daunting prospect, and a promise I probably wouldn't have made had I been sober at the time. So I called upon the services of some of the amazing musicians I have worked with over the past few years. Move Over was the first song I heard Jo Harman sing and Stevie Watts award winning Hammond organ playing seemed like a natural fit too"

'Cypher' is indeed the perfect example of a natural fit of like minded musicians and their natural talents and the delightfully natural sound of a big band cutting loose that has not been heard for a long time making a welcome and long overdue return.

Kenny Dope Presents Wildstyle Breakbeats - Cuckoo Clocking / Crime Cut
  • A1: Cuckoo Clocking
  • B1: Crime Cut

Charlie Ahearn's 1983 film Wild Style holds a place in both music and cinematic history as one of the first examples of a hip-hop film. Since its original release it has been widely praised for its hybrid approach as both a narrative musical and a documentary, and as a time capsule of sorts into the culture of hip-hop during its infancy in the 1980s. Besides its classic depictions of MCing, turntablism, graffiti, and breakdancing, the film also featured now legendary figures of the genres in acting roles, such as Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy, Busy Bee Starski, and many more. Wild Style went on to garner an immense cult following, portions of the film itself would be sampled in records by artists like Nas, Beastie Boys, MF Doom, and more, and would even be exhibited by museums in Chicago and Boston as part of programs on the art of the 1980s. Beyond the film itself however, Wild Style's soundtrack has gone down in music history as a crucial piece of hip-hop handicraft. During a time where the sampling of records by Queen or Kool & The Gang was commonplace in the hip-hop scene, Ahearn took a different route in soundtracking his film, calling upon seasoned musicians like Chris Stein of Blondie and R&B session drummer Lenny Ferraro to produce an entirely original set of lyricless groove, which would be sampled into true hip-hop instrumental tracks by turntablist Grand Wizzard Theodore. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the breaks became the stuff of hip-hop legend, and a treasure trove for crate-diggers and vinyl enthusiasts. World-renowned DJ Kenny Dope, a longtime fan of the breaks that made up Wild Style's soundtrack, re-edited the tracks into full-length cuts in 2014. KayDee now presents the singles individually for the first time ever. Each 7" is a piece of hip-hop history, as some of the most highly regarded and sought-after instrumental beats of all time, from one of the most important music films of all time.

Since 2013, this duo has trademarked their discoveries with the appellation Beach Diggin', a label that certifies the quality and rarity of its products and guarantees a maximum dose of sunshine for every groove. Braving the hordes of sugar-hungry bees swarming around boxes of Caribbean records, the humidity in the holds of boats, or jostling to save 45's lying on the ground from being trampled underfoot, Guts and Mambo, at the risk of their own lives, have explored the most far-flung corners of the earth, all for a single purpose: To discover and to share.

Danny Offia - Funk With Me

Danny Offia

Funk With Me

12inchPMG070LP
PGM Rec.
15.07.2017

Danny Offia's Funk With Me is a prime slab of Nigerian Boogie. Sinewy and urbane, it's the soundtrack of Lagos in the early eighties. The city was awash with oil money, clubs were booming and every night was a party night - the perfect place for a man with a great voice, a white suit and seductively-clutched packet of B&H Golds. Funk With Me was recorded in London with a crack team of session musicians. Drummer Blair Cunningham was from Memphis and had played with Robert Johnson. Sax player Ray Carless was regarded as the London jazz scene's best-kept secret. Engineer Duncan Bridgeman would go on to work with Duran Duran. Danny Offia brought the songs and the Lagos attitude. 'Funk With Me' is a certified party starter. '10 Years In Love' and 'Weak For You' are sophisticated groovers. 'Sat Nite (Is A Party Nite)' is guaranteed to get any girl on the dancefloor, while 'Don't Make Me Cry' is smooth enough take her home. Funk With Me is Lagos in an album - cosmopolitan, sexy and witty with an energy and spirit, all of its own. - Peter Moore

Foundars 15 - Co-operation

Foundars 15

Co-operation

12inchPMG068LP
PGM Rec.
15.07.2017

After years of gigging around the east Nigerian music scene, Foundars 15 finally hit the jackpot when they recruited legendary bass player, Marshall Udo. Charismatic and confident, Udo immediately energised the band, bringing a new funky and psychedelic vibe as well as a bunch of songs he'd workshopped with the Funkees. The tone of the album is set early. Nek Adirika's searing guitar lick announces 'We Are On The Move', a track that is both funky and determined. 'Co-operation' is a horn-driven slab of ghetto funk. 'Cool and Good (For Love)' is a psychedelic wig-out. 'Work To Success' could well be the new-look Foundars 15 manifesto set to music. While Marshall Udo was undoubtedly the catalyst, Co-operation is very much a group effort. Udo, Sony Enang, Nek Adirika and Ike Peters each provide songs and the musicianship of each player is impeccable. Every track is super-tight and sophisticated. This is the sound of a band that means business. It's also why Co-operation is widely regarded as one of the great Afro-Funk rock albums of all time. - Peter Moore

Goldfinger Doe & B.m.s. - Let's Dance Together
  • A1: Jane
  • A2: Funky Africa
  • A3: Julie Anna
  • B1: Let's Dance Together
  • B2: Jah Help Us
  • B3: B.M.S. Bowl

William Onyeabor wasn't the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the 70s and 80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on Let's Dance Together - a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist, Mike Umoh (a.k.a B.M.S.) Goldfinger met Umoh playing with Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies. Bass player Bashiru Musa, was a fellow Groovie too, and when the three hit the studio to record Let's Dance Together, the groove was already tight and hot. The title track, 'Let's Dance Together', is an urgent boogie monster, peppered with cosmic synths. 'Funky Africa' is an irresistible floor-filler, driven by the 'funk in the black soil and the soul in the air.' 'Jah Help Us' is a reggae-tinged reworking of the Lord's Prayer, with added squelchy synth. 'B.M.S. Bowl' It's just an excuse for Umoh to show off his preposterous percussive skills. Goldfinger's extraordinary synth skills are always front and centre. They transform 'Jane', providing a humorous commentary in an otherwise straightforward romantic lament, and propel the funkier tracks to become the heartbeat of the album. Let's Dance Together is an Afro Funk space ship, fuelled up and ready to take off. - Peter Moore

Leon Ware (1lp)

12inchBEWITH001LP
Be With Records
12.07.2017

Leon Ware's self-titled 1982 album has long been a holy grail for rare groove record collectors. Indeed, mint copies are rarely found for less than £100. A truly unsung legend, Leon Ware has written a stunning variety of classic soul music over the course of six decades.

He joined Motown in the late 60s and became one of the label's key writers. His most indelible contribution at Motown was Marvin Gaye's masterpiece I Want You. Ware's production and songwriting memorably took Gaye to another creative level.

Despite recording a handful of critically acclaimed solo albums for Motown and Elektra, including this one here, he has remained a secret to many outside the music industry.

Be With Records hope this timely reissue goes some way to rectifying that.

Paul Nice - Drum Library: The Lost Volumes

The Drum Library series, which began back in 2001, has prided itself on compiling the hardest, crunchiest and most rarefied drums from every source imaginable. We've held to this standard for over 15 years, providing professional producers & bedroom beat makers alike with the largest collection of quality drums available today. In short, the Drum Library series has become an industry standard. The ever-expanding, go-to kit for beat makers around the world. Now, with the conclusion of the series at Volume 15, you hold in your hands, what will be the last vinyl incarnation of the Drum Library series. These drums actually constitute what would have originally been Volume 4 and 5 before the masters were initially thought to have been lost in a flood that gutted the studio where, up until then, the Drum Library series were made. Fortuitously perhaps, these last two orphaned' volumes were discovered safe & sound in a storage unit just as Vol.15 was wrapping up. We've compiled them both here in one special edition volume. We hope you've had as much fun using the Drum Library series as we've had making them. Thank you for your support over the years!

Starchild Jr. (ex-funkadelic) - Hand Me Down Diapers

Starchild Jr. named GARRETT SHIDER, is a seriously talented guitarist, much lauded and in demand in the music industry. This might be unsurprising since Garrett was brought up on guitars being the son of legendary PARLIAMENT / FUNKADELIC guitarist, musical director GARRY SHIDER. This Funky album is a tribute from son to father, and an extension of PFunk Allstars (the next generation so to speak). 'Hand me down diapers' is a punchy versatile album with gorgeous guitars and harmony. Featured on it is the Funk maestro himself, GEORGE CLINTON, as well as other bandmembers of today's FUNKADELIC crew. - Rachel Kinoti

*A unique collection that brings together Northern Soul favourites that shook the scene when they were discovered on acetates and master tapes or on crate diggin' trips to the U.S.A.

*An important collection mastered 'loud' for the enterprising DJ

ALMOST A YEAR ON, Outta Sight proudly presents the follow-up to one of the most talked about albums of 2016... NORTHERN & RARE SOUL COLLECTOR II featuring another batch of dynamite dancers that escaped release at the time or were covered up by pionering DJs.

A special nod must go to Bob Fisher for discovering our powerhouse opener Don't Start None' by the Mayfield Singers which unexpectedly surfaced amongst a bunch of Roulette tapes from EMI. Thanks also to John Madara for producing Len Barry on his super rare rendition of I'll Always Need You' and Charly Records for unearthing Roscoe Shelton's You're The Dream'. The latter was first played at Stafford's Top Of The World Club courtesy of DJ Guy Hennigan who was also behind George Jackson That Lonely Night' (covered up as Otis Pollard Remember Hurting Me So') and Oscar Wright Fell In love' (covered up as Hudson Alexandra I'm So Glad'). A shout out too, to Pat Brady for spinning Junior McCants Try Me For Your New Love' (covered up as Little Carl Carlton Hey Girl We Are in Love') and to Keb Darge for Thee Enchantments covered up as I'm In Love' by the Detroit Shakers. Rick Cooper, of Manchester's Global Records fame, first came across the incredible Show Stoppers Gotta Get Closer To My Love' which was subsequently popularised by Neil Rushton at Inferno Records.
A final special thanks to Ady Croasdell of Kent Records, who discovered many of the tracks on Volume 1 in our Collector series and on this album too including: The Platters Not My Girl', originally recorded by Johnny Hampton, and our final outing by the legendary Chuck Jackson What's With This Loneliness' which first appeared on a Kent anniversary 45.

The Voices Of East Harlem - Can You Feel It

IN DEMAND VINYL LP OF CLASSIC ALBUM

The Voices Of East Harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for Just Sunshine Records recorded two albums under the direction of Leroy Hutson and Curtis Mayfield. They were managed by Jerry Brandt, who looked after Sam Cooke, and performed at 1970's Winter Festival of Peace' at Madison Square Garden. In 1971 they appeared in the film Soul To Soul' made in Ghana. Their first albums were with Elektra Records prior to two albums The Voices Of East Harlem' and Can You Feel It' now being made available again here on Soul Brother.

From Can You Feel It' in 1974 came a Leroy Hutson production close to what the artrist was doing on his own Curtom albums. Can You Feel It' and Rare So Rare' remain particularly popular alongside a dance track Take A Stand' (now for the first time on a Soul Brother 7' with Cashing In'), and the rare groove March Across The Land' (also recorded by Linda Clifford), all tracks on this album in some way contributing to the demand and first legal reissue in two decades from owner Michael Lang, promoter of the original Woodstock music festival.

Tracks sampled include Can You Feel It' (by Penthouse Players Clique), Just Got To Be Myself' (by Starving Artists Crew).

Cosmic Analog Ensemble - Les Sourdes Oreilles

Les Sourdes Oreilles (Deaf Ears), is the next generation analog cinematic music from the 21st century. Following the sound of 70's cinematic jazz funk, this first 300 copies from Cosmic Analog Ensemble is the new My Bags emergency hammer glass breaker.

Designed like a 70's movie soundtrack Graal, with the perfect hijacking artwork of Jerk 45, the album is a future now crate digging target. Built like a narrative scenario, scene after scene, each composition deploys his uniqueness, from the explosives intense actions of Camille 3000", moments of suspense with "Sol Sur Sol", to running chase on "En Faction" and flying panoramic views of "Point De Bascule"... the compositions are depicting a rich range of situations, moods and intrigue.

Brilliantly composed, produced and interpreted by Charif Megarbane, playing himself all instruments, track after track, each song is a one man piece of art. Chiseled drum breaks, evocative bass and stirring melodies are a part of a bigger plan, sprinkled with subtle sound effects.

Les Sourdes Oreilles is a long artisanal goldsmith work, cooking occidental classic jazz-funk tradition into an afro oriental kitchen. It's what makes this release so awesome, unique and necessary to our deaf ears.

'Funky Chimes' is a two-hour collection of excellent and unique grooves. It contains 27 of the most interesting yet long forgotten Belgian dance tracks from the seventies, when a generation of extremely gifted and versatile musicians experimented with funk, jazz, latin and other grooves.
'Funky Chimes' is in many ways the logical follow up to 2014's highly acclaimed compilation 'Funky Chicken'. Uncovering a blind spot in Belgium's musical heritage and unearthing a diverse collection of hidden treasures. 'Funky Chicken' has induced a renewed interest in Belgium's rare grooves from the seventies, which until then had never been regarded a genre worth mentioning. Having said that, this second instalment is much more than just a fast sequel or a batch of leftovers. The music's quality matches that of its predecessor, but the treasure hunt was even more adventurous, and the stories behind some of the nuggets even more gripping.

Alec Mansion - Alec Mansion

Alec Mansion

Alec Mansion

12inchBEWITH022LP
Be With Records
05.07.2017

A sublime slice of boogie-funk, Alec Mansion has steadily gained the status of a "crate-digging classic". Accordingly, it has been near-impossible to unearth a physical copy in good condition for many years. Be With is delighted to present the first ever vinyl reissue, remastered in time to grace the discerning terraces and boat parties of the coming summer months.

Originally released in 1983, the LP arrived with impeccable credentials, programming duties were handled by Dan Lacksman (the brains behind Telex, the "Belgian Kraftwerk") whilst production came from Marc Moulin (of jazz-rock fusion heroes Placebo). At the time its merits were mainly praised by radio and studio heads. Today, Mansion's masterpiece is lauded by boogie aficionados from Liege to Los Angeles.

It was during a stay in Chicago that the Belgian took inspiration from the communal spirit and sheer power of black American funk. In a recent interview with Vice's Noisey, Mansion cited The Whispers, Prince and Chic as key touchstones in his quest for his desired sound. Upon finessing his idiosyncratic European style of funk for his self-titled sophomore LP, Mansion flirted with perfection.

Showcasing a staggering run of instant (non)-hits, this sonically stunning album can be viewed as both of its time and, yet, aeons ahead of it.

Amongst the myriad highlights, "Ou Es-Tu" recalls neck-breaking G-Funk roughly a decade before it was ubiquitous. Its swagger conjures the fantasy sound of Dam-Funk producing fellow Francophone masters Phoenix, circa United, all buzzing synths and snapping drums underpinning vocals that ooze European style.

The glorious synth-workout "Dans L'eau De Nice" boasts an inordinate amount of instrumental flourishes. Augmented by Mansion's vocal class, it still feels tight and perfectly formed like all timeless pop music, and it has since become infamous as a joyous end-of-night singalong hit for house parties.

The startlingly confident "Marche" borders on the arrogant, its sun-drenched cool inviting both awe and irresistible movement. "Quand Je Serai Grand" blasts lazer-guided synth washes over an undeniable groove that would've made Nile Rodgers swoon as he prepped Like A Virgin.

The acid squelch that propels the strutting "Laid, Bête, Et Méchant" delivers infectious bounce with enviable abandon whilst the fantastically wonky "Trop Triste" garnered renewed attention after featuring on Zaltan's beloved Quartier Choc mixtape.

On the rare occasions it appears on the secondary market, it commands eye-watering figures. A record that has eluded even the most seasoned of vinyl freaks, this officially licensed reissue enables a wider audience to now discover its undoubted genius. Dovetailing neatly with the recent interest in forgotten boogie and obscure Euro-pop, this timely reappearance of a certified lost treasure is sure to be one of the summer's essential releases. As sophisticated and multi-layered as the best of the genre, this is highly recommended if you dig for analogue boogie/synth-funk as well as the more leftfield elements of slick 80s pop.

The original artwork of both jacket and sumptuous, full-colour inner sleeve has been faithfully restored, the latter featuring Mansion's memorable lyrics emblazoned across the pleasing jazzy early 80s design. Sonically, Simon Francis' deft mastering adds clarity and muscle throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g.

Hannah Williams & The Affirmations - Late Nights & Heartbreak

The much awaited second album by UK's soul hurricane Hannah Williams, recorded and produced by The Heliocentrics' head honcho - Malcolm Catto.

Record Kicks proudly presents the new album "Late Nights & Heartbreak" by Hannah Williams & The Affirmations that will hit the streets worldwide next November 11th 2016. Recorded at Quatermass Studio in London - the HQ of the British cult band The Heliocentrics, - the new album has been produced by legendary UK drummer and producer Malcolm Catto. Alongside the Heliocentric albums on Now Again / Stones Throw, Malcolm is responsible for producing great albums such as "Inspiration Information" by Mulatu Astatke, "Jaiyede Afro" by Orlando Julius and "The Last Transmission" by Melvin Van Peebles. Not only this but Malcolm regularly collaborates with artists such as Floating Points, Quantic, Dj Shadow and Madlib.

So a new producer and a new life for Hannah, who is also now backed by the Affirmations, her new super tight band from Bristol - who will be touring the record too. The musicianship has ramped up several gears since Hannah's first album, bringing a welcome flare of excellence which punctuates Hannah's heartbreaking vocals and embraces Malcolm's tight, psychedelic production. Mixed totally analogue, and mastered on tape, "Late Nights & Heartbreak" includes 13 tracks of visceral soul with a touch of psychedelic atmosphere - as evidenced by the first single:"Tame in The Water". The sound is tighter and punchier than ever before - a trait of the Affirmations which has been brought out in several mind-blowing tracks - like the 8+ minutes of "Still in My Head". Which grooves hard throughout, and showcases Hannah up to her most show-stopping moment on the album. "Woman Got Soul" is another 5 minutes of groovy, addictive proof that this is next-level for Hannah and her band. The albums' grooves are interspersed with deep and layered soul tracks, like "Another Sunrise" or "Your Luck Can Change" which act as musical beds upon which Hannah explodes with genuine emotions of love, lust, longing and anger - and everything in between. All the songs are original and come from hands of the Bristol-based collective surrounding The Affirmations, led by MD James Graham. The only exception being a monster psychedelic soul version of "Dazed and Confused", which is strongly influenced by the original version by Jake Holmes.

Blessed by Sharon Jones, Hannah Williams exploded onto the soul scene with her debut album a "Hill Of Feathers" in 2012. The first single "Work it Out" was an independent hit on the airwaves all over the world. From US to Australia and all around Europe, the single became beloved, to the point where it spent time as the number 1 most downloaded song in Greece. The official video has also garnered over a million views on YouTube. The story of Hannah Williams seems to be written in lore from day one. Her father was a musically gifted minister, and her mother let her join the church choir at the age of 6. Hannah could read music before she could properly read words. Now she's an unstoppable force of incredible, once-in-a-lifetime talent. After the release of "A Hill of Feathers" in 2012, she was catapulted all around Europe, capturing the hearts of all they met including (among others): Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Cat Power, Charles Bradley and Craig Charles. Since then Hannah has made several trips to Europe to headline festivals and stun audiences in clubs such as the Mojo in Hamburg, Magnolia in Milan and Tempo in Club Madrid. Sold out shows at UK venues include Band on the Wall in Manchester, The Colston Hall, Jazz Cafe Camden, 100 Club and Pizza Express Jazz (3 times). As well as this, she has appeared on the UK festival scene, with sets at Shambala, Valley Fest, Wilderness, Cambridge Jazz and Larmer Tree Jools Holland's stage.
