Myron & E With The Soul Investigators - Behind Closed Doors / Turn Back

Without blinking an eye, the Californian double trouble known as Myron & E bring yet another dose of heavy soul to the table. "Behind Closed Doors" switches gears from their previous material, providing this time a genuine up-tempo dancer. Propelled forward by the mayfieldesque stylings of The Soul Investigators, the tune should shatter knees at any northern soul setting around the globe.

Myron & E's recent lyrical output has balanced neatly between falling in and out of love versus lamenting on the troubles in society. "Behind Closed Doors" sits neatly in the middle. It reflects on infidelity in a relationship by playing with communal situations, where rumors circulate and poison the situation further. The whole thing is turned tongue-in-cheek by some street savvy feminine input near the end. The b-side includes "Turn Back", the opening track from The Broadway album, first time on 45. This beautiful ballad presents the duo and whole group on their strongest and most connected to the modes of their genre. The lyrics don't communicate nostalgia as such, but rather act as a welcome to the fantastic soulful reality, which the listener is about to enter.

Sylvia Striplin - You Cant Turn Me Away / Searchin

Top-notch reissue compilation EP featuring four of the best tracks from renowned 80s soul/funk songstress Sylvia Striplin. An integral part of Roy Ayers' musical family, the hugely-talented Striplin performed as part of his band Aquarian Dream as well as releasing these superb solo efforts on Ayers' highly-esteemed Uno Melodic label. First up is notorious party-starter 'You Can't Turn Me Away', a super-sexy slo-mo funk workout famously sampled by Junior M.A.F.I.A. and Biggie Smalls for their massive hit 'Get money', followed by the awesome bass-heavy rare groove favourite 'Searchin'. Flip over for irresistible up-tempo jam 'Give Me Your Love' and finally 'All Alone' a beautifully understated dreamy soul epic with gorgeous floating vocals and soaring string arrangements.

The Mighty Sceptres - Siren Call

The Mighty Sceptres sound like a lost musical treasure from the vaults of soul. Featuring the combined musical imaginations of collaborators Nick Radford (Frootful) and Angeline Morrison (Freestyle Records / The Ambassadors of Sorrow), The Mighty Sceptres cut heavy beats with soulful yearning and shots of funky sensibility. "Siren Call" is the duo's first single as "The Mighty Sceptres" and is the perfect introduction to their sound.

The song itself is rich with significance. Its heritage is firmly in the minor blues tradition, exemplified by tracks like Rose Mitchell's 'Baby Please Don't Go'. Angeline is heavily influenced by Alan Lomax's recordings of prison songs and spirituals, and also by Emily Bronte's classic 'Wuthering Heights'. The eerie music seemed to lend itself to the development of a story around a little lovelorn ghost returning to its beloved, hiding shyly and tapping on the window when it felt its confidence surge. The song evolves into a swinging tempo as the ghost realises the futility of her endeavour...

With influences as diverse as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Irma Thomas, The Impressions and The Soul Brothers Six, getting the "right sound", from the writing through to the recording, engineering, production, mixing and mastering, is of paramount importance to this sort of music. As such, The Mighty Sceptres are careful to work with people who understand where they are coming from, while using suitable vintage instruments and analog equipment that will help achieve an authentic sound. Kryzysztof Oktalski, who co-produced the debut single is himself a big Northern Soul collector, with an encyclopedic knowledge of recording, engineering and mixing techniques from the best studios and labels of the 60s.
Look for their debut full-length album dropping in 2014!

Breakaway - Straight On To The Top!

Rare sought-after album from 1970 Illionois band Breakaway. Soul Funk-Fusion & Disco, remastered from original master tapes by legendary & original producer Bill Schulenberg.

The re-issue of these two long-lost and highly collectable LPs marks the end of a long road for
BBE and for the band Breakaway who made them... The explosion of Internet connectivity has
made what used to seem rare commonplace, but also opened up a world of previously
unknown musical riches, and enabled enterprising fans to make contact with obscure figures
that they might've imagined would be forever inaccessible. Whereas collectors used to prize
independent labels, now it's all about the 'private press': records released by the same folks
that made them, in tiny numbers, without distribution, and promotion usually limited to giving
them out by hand at gigs. Such were the releases of Breakaway.
Breakaway recorded two LPs. in the late 70's these re-issues tell the story of a magnificent live
band that made waves across St. Louis, Ill and further beyond to cities such as Boston and Las
Vegas. A story that has come full circle after 35 years...
Their self titled first album Breakaway touches showbiz glitz, while songs like 'Understudy DJ'
and 'There's a New Group In Town', caught the disco vibe, as pretty much everything else did
in 1977, and it's these that have been delighting twenty-first century dancers , as the morethan
decade-long mania for all things 'disco' sends enterprising DJs and collectors looking way
beyond the canon of classics.
'Straight On To The Top!' was a more ambitious album, Breakaway had more experience and
the potential of a record deal seemed closer and more realistic. 'Work With The Music' has
something of a mutant disco feel, and would certainly fit with today's music on the trendy dance
floors of East London, Williamsburg NY and Shibuya Tokyo 'Breakaway' had a sophisticated
funk/fusion sound that wouldn't have sounded amiss on many a big-budget major label album
project. After the release of 'Straight On To The Top!', the band entered negotiations with
Bang Records in the US, but the A&R department fell apart, and the hopes of a record deal
faded...
Fast-forward 35 years, the enthusiasm is still the same...

Lack Of Afro - Music For Adverts

A Wide ranging, eclectic and progressive musical outlook has always been the Lack of Afro approach. His latest material follows suit as he harnesses disparate musical styles ranging from funk, soul and hip-hop to create a contemporary yet vintage musical escapade of superb songs.

On his 4th studio album for Freestyle Records, the influences, sounds and musical textures are more eclectic than ever. Below, Adam talks us through some of the his favourite moments on 'Music For Adverts'.

First out of the box is the steaming funk killer Freedom: This time around I knew I didn't want an intro or a skit to start the album - I needed a strong, heavy opener - I had the melody for the chorus floating around in my head. It was then just a case of working with Jack Tyson - Charles on the rest of it and getting the vibe that the song required.

Long time Lack Of Afro collaborator Herbal T features on Brown Sugar: I had an idea of doing a disco track with an emcee on it, which you don't really hear often. This is actually the first time I've sung on a Lack of Afro track, adding my backing vocal warblings on the choruses! Special shout to George Cooper for the howlin' Hammond solo at the end too.

Of the gritty instrumental No Guts, No Glory Adam explains: I wanted to include 3 instrumentals as I always have a soft spot for them & it's what people know me for. The 'choir' was recorded by layering up my own voice in different octaves, nothing is auto-tuned, its all real. The studio allows me to do stuff like that but I could never sing live - I'll leave that to the proper vocalists.

'Proper vocalist' Jack Tyson - Charles again features on The Gypsy, which as Adam explains uses the classic song format to great effect: One of my favourite LOA tunes to date, Its in keeping with the album mission statement of wanting to write 'proper songs' instead of just grooves.

Palmistry released already a single on Dre Skull, Dubble Ducth- Mixpak Label titled "Catch"

Palmistry 'Vapore' on Rinse FM - Guestlist Playlist along with

Palmistry is the responsable of Triad God's music production released on Hippos in Tanks

South London producer Palmistry (aka Benjy Keating) responsable for TRIAD GOD's (Hippos in Tanks) production and music, fresh from a collaboration with James Ferraro and a single out on MixPak join in with Presto! on this amazing work tha moves between hermetic sometimes hyper-minimalistic R&B rips, fine ambient tones and 'dancehall' overtures on low freq domain.

London musician/producer Palmistry seems to have come into his own recently. After his really fantastic single Catch for Mixpak, he's lining up a new 12" for Italian label Presto!. The EP's title track, Lil Gem, is a very emotive instrumental song which defies any obvious classification. The melodies and arpeggios are almost J-RPG-esque, the deep toms and claps give it a stoned rhythm, and the operatic samples are so expertly woven into the composition - which is pretty minimalist, really - that you don't even notice what a weird piece of sampling it is. Whatever it is, it's a belter.

I first heard about London beatsmith/filmmaker Benjy Keating, aka Palmistry, while posting a few missives from the Cantonese-rapping Hippos In Tanks artist Triad God. The origins of that project remain somewhat of a mystery to me, but Palmistry's driving role in both the production and visual aspects of the Vietnamese/Chinese MC's career got me kind of curious about the guy. A few weeks ago, he dropped an Auto-Tuned, dancehall-inspired single on Mixpak; the accompanying slow-mo footage of a woman dancing in athletic gear enhanced the feel-good vibes, and also confirmed his vision as a hyper-stylized one, manifesting itself equally through image and sound.

The Liberators - Power Struggle

Produced by Nate Goldentone aka Nathan Aust (Dojo Cuts, The Liberators) the Australian premier afrofunkjazz combo, The Liberators, are back with the brand new album Power struggle.

Born in an unused factory space in urban Sydney, The Liberators - a compelling 10-piece Afrofunkjazz steamroller - have relentlessly pushed their sound to become leaders in the Australian Afrobeat resurgence. With their second album, Power Struggle, The Liberators have gone deeper and darker into the polyrhythmic, horn-driven realms of Afrobeat, producing eight weighty songs worthy of fueling any revolution. With a maturing mix of jazz, latin, soul and funk, it's obvious the sounds of fracturing world events echo throughout the album.

The Liberators produced Power Struggle in Sydney, recording straight to tape in a no-nonsense, no-overdub fashion, capturing the phenomenal vibe of their live shows. Some of these shows have included a roof destroying performances alongside Mulatu Astake and Craig Charles at Russ Dewbury's legendary Night at the Jazz Rooms. Power Struggle will leave you nodding your head, fist in the air, ready to join the uprising. The Liberators are back, harder and stronger than ever.

Anthony Joseph - Time

Anthony Joseph

Time

Heavenly Sweetness
28.02.2014

Few contemporary poets teach creative writing at the University of London while, at the same time, bowling over large audiences at festivals around the world. Anthony Joseph has also published four volumes of poetry and a novel, and is currently working towards a doctorate. As if all this weren't enough, he is releasing his fifth album, the result of a true meeting of artistic minds, with the New York based bassist and singer Meshell Ndegeocello.
'Time will tell', Bob Marley sang, convinced that time would in the end always deliver its impartial verdict. Like the Rasta prophet, Anthony Joseph sports the kindly smile of those to whom time has rendered justice. Born in Port of Spain, raised by his grandparents, he arrived in London in 1989 with a single suitcase. He has since become one of the most fascinating black authors of his generation. Few contemporary poets teach creative writing at the University of London while, at the same time, bowling over large audiences at festivals around the world. Anthony has also published four volumes of poetry and a novel, and is currently working towards a doctorate. He recently completed a biography of Lord Kitchener, an icon of 20th century Trinidadian calypso, which will become the basis for a BBC documentary in 2014. As if all this weren't enough, he is releasing his fifth album, the result of a true meeting of artistic minds, with the New York based bassist and singer Meshell Ndegeocello, appropriately titled 'Time'.

Five days working together at the Question de Son studios in Paris was all it took to record the eleven tracks on a disc that spins like a richly coloured kaleidoscope. Meshell Ndegeocello's arrangements at times hint at Jazz and psychedelia. At other times she produces an intense rock atmosphere, or even an irresistible funk flavour à la Sly Stone, for example on 'Tamarind'. For 'Kezi', Anthony asked Meshell to draw inspiration from rapso, a mix of rap and calypso that is all the rage in Trinidad these days. In addition to Meshell herself on bass and Sylvester Earl Harvin on drums, listeners will appreciate the feeling and dexterity in Antillean percussionist Roger Raspail's playing (who has performed with a number of giants in Caribbean Jazz and beyond), as well as the voicing of flautist Magic Malick, who shines on 'Alice Of The River', among other tracks.
This acoustic galaxy revolves around Anthony Joseph's radiant poetry. On his last album, he sang on a few tracks, such as 'She is the Sea', but here he prefers to let his words take centre stage. 'Meshell told me, 'Let's make a real poetry album!' So, except for a couple tracks, I didn't really adapt my poems the way I normally do, for example, by repeating some sentences to turn them into choruses. I just wrote poems'. A true hymn to joy ('Joy') gives way to the sombre tale of an infamous Trinidadian hustler and self-styled black revolutionary, played out against a hypnotic drumbeat ('Michael X.'). His poems are filled with women: heroines, resistance fighters, mothers judged and shamed by crowds, suicidal wives, such as 'Alice Of The River'. The most famous is of course Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani teenager attacked by the Taliban, whose story inspired Anthony to write 'Girl With A Grenade', long before she was nominated for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. For this and many other reasons, the album seems very specific to this moment in time, while retaining a timeless quality. 'Time' should go a long way towards engraving Anthony Joseph's name in the history books of great black music. As Marley sang, 'Time will tell.'

Green Linez - Landscape / House Of 7 Joys Ep

We will keep limited stock only 1 month as usual....Please send your order as soon as possible!!!

Greeen Linez is a collaboration between Chris Greenberg (from the British electronic pop band Hong Kong In The 60s) and UK-born/Tokyo-based DJ/producer A Taut Line (aka Matt Lyne, co-founder of the Diskotopia label). The project combines the '90s dance music and R&B that soundtracked Chris and Matt's childhoods with the '70s/'80s jazz-funk and synthesizer soundtracks that they have obsessed over in the years since. All of this is filtered through the cocktail of retro pop, fusion and supermarket muzak that Matt has been exposed to during his time in Japan.

Their debut album Things That Fade was released in summer 2012 on Diskotopia, receiving positive reviews in The Wire, DJ Mag and FACT, as well as support from DJs and producers such as Julio Bashmore, Hyetal and Magic Touch - the last-named has also recently collaborated with the duo for his Nothing More EP, to be released in November on Tensnake's label True Romance. Besides their own music, Greeen Linez have also produced well-received remixes for artists including Seahawks, Maylee Todd, Sorcerer and the Japanese Idol group Especia.

The Landscape EP is the first appearance of Greeen Linez on the popular Japanese label Catune, run by 9dw's Kensuke Saito and home to Disco, Balearic and New Age-tinged releases from such artists as Windsurf, Sorcerer, The Beat Broker and Sauce 81. The title track features Ichirou Fujimoto (under his Awa moniker) on guitar, following on from his collaboration with Greeen Linez on their 2012 album track "Knowledge", as well as work on popular Japanese DJ duo Monkey Timers' debut single "Monk". A2 is Awa's own take on the title track, stripping away the kalimba, guitar and saxophone to create a deep, floaty synth bass-driven dancefloor hit that evokes the works of Larry Heard. On the flip side, the Electro-Funk number "House Of Seven Joys" recalls the pristine production sound of Trevor Horn, whilst the duo's own Dance Mix ups the track's pace to that of a house stormer, ploughing energetically through the accompanying birdsong and natural textures.

DJ Feedback
Great stuff. Really like A1 track and B2...sounds like Rheji Burrell producing Level 42.

Bob James - Jazz-funk Classics 1974-1982 3x12"

Legendary keyboardist and composer Bob James is one of the major architects of the '70s jazz-funk sound, and is also notorious among a younger generation raised on hip hop. His early albums have been plundered for samples countless times, and his tunes "Nautilus" and "(Take Me To The) Mardi Gras" are two of the most revered b-boy classics, acknowledged as musical foundations of the hip hop movement. Amazingly, until now there has been no collection that focused on the funkiest side of the keyboardist's vast catalog, the years when his instrument of choice was the classic Fender Rhodes electric piano. Previous Bob James collections have attempted to please smooth jazz aficionados who know the man for his later, synthesized-based sound, throwing in a token representative or two of the rougher, groove-based tunes of his early career. Compiled by Wax Poetics magazine's contributing editor Andrew Mason, Rhodes Scholar makes no concessions to fans of the smooth jazz sound and goes straight for the funk jugular. The 22 songs here are the gold that beat-diggers sift through stacks of albums to find, with all of James' heaviest (and most heavily sampled) tracks included. Fans of rappers Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC, Arrested Development, De La Soul and EDM/house music stars Royksopp, Moodymann and Dmitri From Paris will hear familiar themes as this compilation lays bare the sources of some of their biggest hits. An extremely scarce alternate mix of one of James' biggest and most controversial tracks, "(Take Me To The) Mardi Gras", is
included for the first time since its Italian-only 1975 release. Previously unseen vintage photos plus detailed liner notes by Mason with comments from Bob James himself further enhance this long awaited package.

Pleasure - Glide : The Essential Selection 1975-1982 3x12"

Pleasure originated from the ashes of two local Portland, Oregon bands, The Soul Masters and Franchise, to become veritable monsters of funk, soul and jazz. Their sound is often compared to Earth, Wind and Fire or Kool and the Gang. They had an inspired run of seven albums, six for Fantasy Records and one for RCA, from 1975 through 1982. The group was discovered by Grover Washington Jr.; he passed their demos on to Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders, who signed them to his production company, At Home Productions. There, in addition to recording the group's own material for Fantasy Records, members of Pleasure also collaborated with Henderson's other artists, including Ronnie Laws and Side Effect. Tracks from all seven Pleasure albums are featured on this multi-CD set, Glide: The Essential Collection 1975-1982, many of which have never been reissued on CD before, including an extended disco/dance remix of "Foxy Lady" which was lost in tape vaults for 35 years! Two versions of Pleasure's top 10 R&B smash "Glide" appear, along with carefully curated deep tracks like "Thoughts Of Old Flames", "Sassafras Girl" and 'Sending My Love", as well as radio favorites such as "Let Me Be The One" and the hip-hop breakbeat classics "Let's Dance" and "Bouncy Lady". Rounding out this deluxe package are many rarely seen group photos, along with extensive liner notes featuring newly-commissioned interviews with original band members by veteran Urban music critic and historian A. Scott Galloway.

Herb Geller - An American In Hamburg - The View From Here

This record kicks from the very beginning, in a way you would't expect when looking at the cover: A white man in a brightly glittered suit and hat holding his alto sax. A posture somewhere between a down-and-out tv series cop and James Last. If you open the fold out cover the misleading signals continue: A b/w picture of an intellectual (the same man) and his flute; this might fit really well for Rachmaninoff!

A whole album of previously unreleased soul and funk gems recorded 1973 -84

All serious record collectors agree that finding rare records can be a difficult, time consuming and often expensive business. Finding previously unknown records takes this challenge to another level, another step further and you're into the realm of lost master tapes, acetates and demos in record company archives - take one step further still and you've just stepped into a black hole: the mysterious, unknown world of private recordings made by individual musicians, never before circulated beyond the four walls of their studio or home.

Such is the case with Master Plan Inc, a band from Chicago led by Fred Shorts. With just one single to their name - an uber-rarity rated at over $2000 - nobody had any idea that within the confines of a studio archive and Shorts' private residence there would be a wealth of other recordings on acetate, reel to reel tape and cassette.

Despite our 24/7 commitment to search for such material, such a find is very rare indeed, coming up only once every few years. Yet what marks this as so special is that only when these soulful treasures had been fully excavated did it come to light that the quality of the music would make for a complete album of astonishingly high quality - most albums have one or two gems padded out with filler, but here we have the real deal - gem after gem after gem. And all previously unreleased! If you're into modern soul, '70s funk, smooth mid-tempo crossover dancers or high energy funk blasts - you're in for a treat!

That interesting music man Lenny LaCour was one of Milwaukee's key producers, issuing many acts on his own labels like Magic Touch and Dynamic Sound.
