Johnnie Morisette With Jennell - I'm Hungry

1

Johnny Morisette was born January 1, 1935 in Montu Island, South Pacific. He was raised in Mobile, Alabama, where he grew up singing with a local quartet, The Bells of Heaven. In 1952, Johnnie Morisette decided to abandon gospel and hitchhiked out to Los Angeles. Before releasing on Sam Cooke's SAR label he did a bit of recording for the Dootone and Specialty labels. When SAR folded after Cooke's death, Morisette recorded sporadically for several local independent labels like Icepac, Bay-Tone, and others in styles ranging from blues to funk. I'm Hungry was recorded in the early 1970s and was released on his own J&J imprint. Despite the fact that I'm Hungry has been a deep-funk classic since the mid 1990s and therefore has been put out on several compilations since, you just need to listen closely to hear why this tune has to be re-issued on 45rpm single too. This 45rpm single release is here to promote the forthcoming Ancestors of Rap compilation (TRCD/LP-9019) which is about to drop at the same time.Key-selling points:- strictly limited to 500 copies- original label artwork- officially licensed

Ben E King - Street Tough/music Trance/supernatural Thing/spoiled

Superb EP featuring some of the best and most sought-after floor-friendly cuts from soul legend Ben E King. Kicking off the party is the 12' promo version of 'Street Tough' from 1981. Written by the late great Willie Hutch in 1981, this acclaimed cut oozes class with backing vocals from Luther Vandross and Ullanda McCullough and great sax and is a superb introduction to Mr King's smooth vocal style. Another promo version follows in the shape of 'Music Trance', a slick upbeat disco-styled number packed with jazzy horns and funky guitar licks. On the B-side, we have a fantastic edited long version of Parts 1 and 2 of the immense 1975 crossover smash 'Supernatural Thing' - over seven minutes of super-sexy low-slung chugging floor-burning funk at its very best. Finally, we have 'Spoiled', another killer rare groove cut from 1978 with wonderful backing vocals. Great chance to own Mr. King's funkiest moments on one slab of loud-pressed 12' vinyl.

Tony Grey - Time Factor

Ka-boom!

The legendary digger re-ignites the Lagos Disco Inferno and kicks off his own mouth-watering imprint with these two sides of boogie-down bliss. Irresistible Afro-disco, layered with delirious syn-drums and sick keys, and featuring a horn-line bumptiously whipped from Louis 'Thunder Thumbs' Johnson's bass-playing on MJ's Workin' Day And Night.

Originally from Warri where he stayed throughout most of his career, Tony's first band was the Famous Latin And His Dominant Seven. He gigged for a while as a James Brown imitator with The Great Peters, before his breakthrough fronting the Magnificient Zeinians, with some amazing 45s on EMI's HMV imprint — best of all the psych-rock-funk monster Ije Udo. From the early to mid 1970s, his EMI sides range from Afrobeat to rock and pop. All Tony's records are great. He came up with various names for his backing bands — the Black 7, the Super 7, the Black Kings...

From the early-eighties, with the Ozimba Messengers, Grey's two recordings here were originally released on different LPs.
Limited, top-notch pressing from Pallas via Abbey Road; with a lovely 12-by-24-inch poster.
The first in a fusillade of five.

Georges Vert remembers precisely the moment as a 20-year-old the unmistakable whirr of a Raymond Scott Electronium synth drifted through the bay windows of his dusty, manuscript-strewn Parisian apartment and, for the first time, into his ears. 'I don't know where it was coming from - a studio down the road maybe who'd left a window open to deal with the thick Banlieue heat, I don't know. It's not important,' he says. 'What's important is that nothing was the same after that moment.' The very next day, he quit his job as a classical score transposer, where he'd worked since fleeing the sleepy Normandie town he'd grown up in, Gathemo ('don't bother Googling it,' he laughs between drags of one of those long cigarettes you thought only existed in François Truffaut films). The day after he landed a job composing synth parts for anyone and everyone. 'It was a love affair unlike any I'd had with a woman.' Another cigarette drag then a smile and a wink. 'There were women too, though.'

The remixes are starting with "Yeah That's Right" from new uprising stars: The Phunk Junkies. Arawak - Accadde A

Arawak

Accadde A

12inch1583126
29.08.2014

Long revered in connoisseur circles, but always elusive almost to the status of a myth, Arawak's "Accade a.." takes us on a journey across the planet, depicting faraway places with an uncanny sense of style, using a tapestry of sounds and instruments, sometimes mellow and dreamy, sometimes engulfing the listener in a funky wicked drum break groove. We are offered the chance of a unique journey that takes us from Harlem to Boston, passing through Cuzco, Bali, Bahia, Belfast, Lima and more..

Arawak is one of a multitude of pseudonyms that Luciano Simoncini used in his career as a composer for film scores and background music for radio and television in Italy. Luciano Simoncini was an italian pianist, arranger and conductor (born in Piedimonte Matese, province of Caserta, September 25th , 1939, died in Rome November 8th , 2011). Originally released in 1970 on Simoncini's own "Squirrel records" this album managed to stay under the radar until Hip Hop performer Quasimoto (alter ego of producer Madlib) sampled "Accade a Harlem" for the "Suono libero" series on 70's Jazz funk from Italian library music. Since then, the album gathered considerable interest hence calling for a proper reissue.

This release is fully licensed and comes as an exact replica of the original release, with informative liner notes by Luciano Simoncini's family friend Claudio Casalini, and including unseen pictures of Maestro Simoncini at home and with his wife.

The laid-back grooves and enticing dreamy atmospheres alternate with more funky sounds to make a truly unique music experience that will appeal to fans of Janko Nilovic, Stefano Torossi, Remigio Ducros, Pino Canizzo..

Dimitri / Barumbi 7"

12inchAMDLT005
01.07.2013

Straight out of the Israeli flourish groove label "Audio Montage" comes yet another bomb by the name of "Crunch 22". Led by one of "The Apples" turntablists, Erez Todres, "Crunch 22" is an eclectic power trio, built from a unique instrumental combination of Rhodes, drums & turntables. With influences deriving from funk to afrobeat, dub to jazz and rhythm&blues to drum'n'bass, Crunch 22 easily transform every concert into a party.

Both tracks open with soulful drum break followed by fat bass line and taken from the band's self titled debut album, due to be released this summer. "Dimitri" on the A side is a mid tempo oriental psych piece with a mysterious violin sample and an Arabic chant. On the flip side, "Barumbi", an up tempo afrobeat tune, which triggers the mind on a wave of an electric tribal dance. This vinyl is a 500 limited edition print under the "Delights" 7 inch series by "Audio Montage".

Various - Funk Globo - The Sound Of Neo Baile Lp

Welcome to Neo Baile, a new take on the traditional sounds and aesthetics of Brazil's Baile Funk (or Funk Carioca) that challenges the established order to create something new, exciting and forward thinking.

Mr Bongo is extremely proud to present The Sound of Neo Baile compilation LP, taking tracks from the album (MRBCD114). Featuring 6 unreleased and exclusive tracks from worldwide producers that re-interpret the love-it-or-hate-it Brazilian Baile Funk sound.

The compilation has been put together by two of the movement's most knowledgeable players: Sao Paulo-based Funk na Caixa aka Renato Martins and London-based Sean Casey aka Bumps, founder of Club Popozuda.

The Sound of Neo Baile EP features established names such as DJ Comdrade aka Xao, whose Favela Trap album made a major dent in the burgeoning scene at the end of 2012 and Rio-based Maga Bo, who has been producing Brazilian-flavoured bass music since the early 00s. Alongside these are upcoming artists you'll most definitely want to keep an eye on including Ophex from Lithuania, Gato Preto from Mozambique/Dusseldorf, Chuck Upbeat from Moscow and London-based Bumps, one of the compilers.

Peter King - Miliki Sound

Miliki Sound

Mr Bongo
30.08.2013

Originally released in 1975 via Sonny Roberts Orbitone label, Miliki Sound is an album by Peter King, Nigerias most talented multi-instrumentalist, highlighting his unique blend of Afrobeat, Highlife, jazz and funk. As King remarked in later life Miliki Sound was his attempt to escape being tied down following a string of albums for the label by delving into his own Afrojazz fusion. Making little impact in his homeland, the album was particularly well received in America and Europe, increasing Kings popularity.

As with his other releases from the same period, Miliki Sound was entirely composed, written and arranged by King. Upbeat and funky the albums six tracks feature plenty of impressive displays of Kings saxophone skills, the instrument for which he was perhaps best known, alongside a talent for arrangement that plays the funk of the groove against the accompanying instruments and Nigerian chants. You only need to listen to Jo Jolo, Ijo Olomo or Gyinmi Komo to see why Kings Afrojazz approach, a blend of modern jazz with highlife as the basis, has proven so popular and continues to endure for over three decades.

Miliki Sound is part of a series of Peter King reissues on Mr. Bongo s Classic African Recordings series.

The Beginning Of The End - The Beginning Of The End

The Beginning Of The End

The Beginning Of The End

2x12inchSTRUT185LP / 159581
STRUT
01.06.2018

Strut presents the definitive reissues of two all-time classic Caribbean soul and funk albums, The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau' (1971) and 'Beginning Of The End' (1976).

Emerging from Nassau in the Bahamas in 1971, the band was formed around the Munnings brothers (Ray, Leroy and Frank) and the first song they recorded, 'Funky Nassau', became a No. 1 Billboard R'n'B hit, selling over a million copies. We wanted to create something new,' remembers Ray Munnings, something that was truly Bahamian. We loved funk but wanted to include elements of junkanoo, the indigenous music of The Bahamas.' An album was written within a week and recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. We brought in more Bahamian themes, like 'Monkey Tamarind', a wild fruit that grows there.'

By the time of their second album in 1976, the band was managed by Don Taylor, also Bob Marley's manager. Don took us to Byron Lee's studio in Jamaica and used Teddy Randazzo (Little Anthony & The Imperials) to direct the sessions,' recalls Munnings. He gave us more of an uptempo jazz funk sound with Chicago-style horns.' The album led to a run of incredible bad luck. Booked to support Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On' tour, the US Musicians Union stepped in and ordered a US group to fill the slot. They were then added onto a major Bob Marley tour in 1976 before he injured his foot, cancelling all dates.

These definitive official reissues of 'Funky Nassau' and 'Beginning Of The End' are remastered by The Carvery from original tapes and feature full length tracks from the studio sessions. Both albums feature a history of the albums and the band by vocalist Ray Munnings, alongside rare photos. 'Beginning Of The End' appears on loudpress 2LP for the first time. The CD edition features both albums + all extra singles recorded by the band.

The Fontanelles - Pinprick / Criminality

The Fontanelles are the newest signings to First Word Records. Originally formed to be the onstage band for the London run of Fela! The Musical, the band's natural chemistry was such that they instinctively continued performing together when the show ended. They took the energy of the stage show and started working on original material, adding reggae, ethio-jazz and ska influences to the afrobeat source. The Fontanelles sound is truly their own, with their incandescent live shows a focal point for their unique energy as a band.

For their first release we've picked two live favourites that showcase just a fraction of the band's deep sound. 'Criminality' is a straight-ahead afro-stomper, bringing the band's virtuoso skills as musicians to the fore, whilst still funky enough to move any dancefloor. 'Pinprick' takes in the slightly dubbier influences of the band, with an elastic bass-line underpinning a seriously catchy horn-led hook.
