Los Fulanos - Y Si Esto Se Acaba Que Siga El 12" + 7"

For a while now, going to see Los Fulanos has been one of the best things you could do in Barcelona (or anywhere else). Los Fulanos have gotten back that riffraff (dissolute) vibe of a pre-Olympics Barcelona. Their concerts are a party where Afro-Latin rhythms come together with a thousand other things, above all, Soul.

Ondatropica - Punkero Sonidero / I Ron Man

The first single from Frente Cumbeiro's Mario Galeano and Will 'Quantic' Holland's new all-star Colombian band Ondatrópica gets served up here as a DJ friendly 7' ahead of the worldwide album release on 16th July. Ondatrópica brings together an all-star cast representing both the classic and modern styles of la musica Colombiana and features legendary figures (Fruko, Anibal Velasquez, Wilson Viveros, Michi Sarmiento to name a few) from Colombia's rich musical past alongside younger Colombian musicians including members of both Mario's band Frente Cumbeiro and Quantic's Combo Barbaro as well as some specially invited guests.
'Punkero Sonidero' is a raw, instrumental tune and with its analog synth bass and four-to-the-floor feel is the band's salute to the cumbia diaspora worldwide. It was one of the first tracks that the group recorded after they entered the famous Discos Fuentes studios in Medellín and so it seems fitting that it should be the first track to get cut to vinyl.
'I Ron Man' is on the flip-side, a drunken take on Black Sabbath's classic 'Iron Man' with a tongue-in-cheek title - 'Ron' being 'Rum' in Spanish. The track features Michi Sarmiento, the big-hitting saxophonist of the golden age of Colombian music who, along with Will 'Quantic' Holland and Mario Galeano, takes a toast of rum (ron) and whisky to celebrate the world's common interest of inebriation.

Suonho - The World Is A Ghetto Ep

GAMM is mucho mucho proud to invite Suonho to the GAMM family.
He's already a well established name on the edit scene, especially after his huge Donny Hathaway edit last year. On GAMM he's now droppin' two heavyweight reworks on one of our all-time social ghetto soul tunes "The World Is A Ghetto". Suonho made classy edits of both the original War version but also George Benson's epic jazz-funk version.

To be honest, we can't choose a winner as we love both version equally but we guarantee you'll use both versions.

Lets take em' to the ghetto!

Supafrico - 3. The Sound Of Funky Africa

Excellent third release on the essential 'Supafrico Records' featuring four absolutely stunning Afro flavoured grooves dug deep from the vaults. First up we have a previously unreleased extended version of 'Hot Black 'N' Sweet' by Nigerian funkster Kio Amachree. Taken from the über-rare 1981 'Ivory' LP, this a slice of pure funk filled afro boogie led by a groovy phat bline, driving horn section and Kio's magnificent Kid Creole-esque vocals. Number two comes in the form of 'Slow Down' from the hugely sought after 1981 'Grill' album by Amas. But 'Slow Down' it doesn't! With a catchy, pulsating drum intro, layers of incredible stabbing piano and damn-right groovy guitar licks, by the time the vocals come in, you're already in a state of Afro-euphoria! On the flip, we have the full 10 minute version of the ultra rare 'Sabi (Get Down)' from Ghanaian master drummer, Okyerema Asante feeding us a funk-riddled piece of undiluted afro groove pie with awesome vocals and tripped out synths Finally, if that wasn't enough, Time Will Tell is a deeply undulating Afro funk disco gem from the 7-piece who were also known as the Lafayette Rock Band. Remastered to the max, this EP is an absolute necessity!

Tal M. Klein, Anthony Mansfield & Irregular Disco Workers - Slow Down Ep

Aniligital Music presents "Slow Down" - a slo-mo slammer being this two track Tal M. Klein EP featuring collaborations with Anthony Mansfield (Hector Works) and Irregular Disco Workers (Cloned In The Vatican). First up, Irregular Disco Workers and TMK dial up a real beauty of a beach track influenced by those late night watchings of Emmanuelle movies with the acid lines of last night's rave still ringing in your ears. Next, we found this pre-AM/TM Anthony and Tal collaboration in a hidden folder called "gem" in our old studio file cabinet. This is a Disco Villainy-era slow disco/jazz fusion...

Teletron - What Time

Teletron

What Time

12inchF8685
PANDA RECORDS
30.04.2012

Welcome return for this very sought-after rare electro 12' from tiny Harlem label Express Records. Big with the Cosmic crowd as well as on the early hiphop scene, this is an extremely cool low-slung synth-heavy electro groover with a hypnotically smooth lead vocal, given a sharp percussive edge by the rattling congas and ticky-time chorus. Written at a time in rap music history when the introduction of synthesizer technology created a wild flurry of creativity, this futuristic track by Barry Michael Cooper (who went on to write the screenplays for movies New Jack City and Above The Rim) was Teletron's only ever release. Film's gain was sadly music's loss as this was, and still is, a boundary-pushing, floor-filling monster. Don't sleep!

15.05.2012

The Grits have been busy for years playing their raw and greasy funk and releasing some of the dopest 45s on labels like Music With Soul, Freestyle & Tropicalia in Furs. Here they come with a new psychedelic /garage edge and some blue-eyed soul vocal delights. "Strychnine" is a funked-up cover of The Sonics' proto-punk tune that sounds as if the Meters would jam with Dusty Springfield. The flip side "Funky Mile" is a spaced out original and even further beyond all usual categories of funk music.

The Booma Rockers - Soul Food / Booma Woman

The Booma Rockers were a London house-band put together by a young producer and songwriter from Guyana, Terry Nelson aka Omar Farouk. Nelson released approximately thirty 45s on his labels Halagala, Booma and Rude Boy in the late 1960 and early 1970s before returning home to Guyana to start a successful and well loved TV station.

The majority of the records were of the ska and rocksteady persuasion but one or two stick out as being slightly different.

'Soul Food', a super weighty instrumental soul / blues / funk b-side was released in 1969/70 on Rude Boy Records featuring amongst others Ghanaian saxophonist and vocalist Teddy Osei (who went on to form the Afro rock band Osibisa). 'Booma Woman' was also a B-side in a more reggae-funk style released possibly a year later featuring vocalist Jean Manix.

Both have been out of print ever since and are re-released with the Nelson families' full permission.

Nelson was a very popular and well-loved figure in Guyanese society and many of his songs have become nationalist and political songs that have become part of the national psyche.

The 7' vinyl is limited to 1000 copies and comes with a free MP3 download of the release.

reestyle Records is immensely proud to be the new home for one of the UK's most creative and in demand musicians, Jessica Lauren.

Since the early 1990s, the soulful, spacey jazz grooves of keyboard player Jessica Lauren have been a familiar part of London's alternative music scene, having in the past released her own original music on Soul Jazz Records, M.E.L.T 2000 and People Records. Jessica's keyboard skills have augmented the live performances and studio recordings ...

Nigeria Rock Special - Psychedelic Afro-rock And Fuzz Funk In 1970s Nigeria

Nigeria Rock Special shines a light on the lesser known musical output that developed in Nigeria beyond the traditional sounds of highlife and afrobeat - young bands caught up in the wave of psychedelic rock that was sweeping Europe and the States in the late '60s.

Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker's visits to Lagos and his band Airforce (featuring many Nigerian musicians), the sound of fuzzed out rock reverberated around the universities and nightspots of Lagos and Ibadan.

Soundway's on-going commitment to documenting the diversity of the Nigerian recording industry is captured through this startling collection of tracks. Compiler Miles Cleret spent over five years working on the first set of Nigeria Special albums involving numerous trips to Nigeria interviewing musicians, researching recordings and scouring dusty record stores and warehouses for these elusive tracks.

Blundetto - Warm My Soul 2x12"

Blundetto double LP with new collaborations, digging deeper into his sound.
With his second album, Blundetto digs further his own sound, a soulful reggae with strong latin and hip hop vibes. Once again, he invited many artists to collaborate with him : the singer Hugh Coltman for the cover of soul classic 'Hercules', ethio jazz band Akale Wube for strong cinematic instrumentals, legendary skater Tommy Guerrero for folky guitars, the golden voice of Jamaican Courntey Love, the rapper Aqueel on 2 songs, Jahdan Blakkamoore on the 'Walk away now'.

People who discovered the first album will be delighted by this new one.
As usual a nice packaging for the LP lovers.

Apart from a few radio presenters, no one has ever seen him. At the moment Blundetto exists only on record. For good reason: when his first album 'Bad Bad Things' came out in June 2012, Blundetto was not entirely comfortable with the idea of being an artist. The surprising thing was that in real life Max Guiget had been a programmer at Radio Nova since 1998. A disciple of Jean-François Bizot, the radio's founder, he learnt the ropes by watching Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garbier, DJ Gilb-R and Lord Zelko, but he never dreamed that he might one day be a star on the decks or in a studio. In his own words, 'It was some friends who urged me to do the first album. They'd heard the forty or so demos I'd made at home and encouraged me to finalise fifteen or so of them. But the idea of playing live sent me into a cold sweat. I didn't feel at all like going out on stage on my own.'
No touring, then and he turned down some great opportunities to perform his tracks on TV for the same reason. Almost in spite of himself, his album received a really good critical welcome. A single with General Elektriks got him onto the France Inter playlist, another with Hindi Zahra earned him regular airtime on Gilles Peterson's decks, and there was even an article about him in Closer magazine in midsummer. He still chuckles at the whole thing. In fact, the buzz caught Blundetto off-guard. Gradually he got used to the whole interview game, agreed to remix other artists and finally decided to serve us up some more on his second album 'Warm My Soul'.
Although his unique style of instrumental canvas provides some obvious continuity, none of the guest vocalists from the first album features on the second. 'I didn't break off with anyone. It's just I didn't want to get in a rut. I don't have any particular method. I only invite people I admire, and so my policy is a bit wait-and-see with some people to see where they go with my track, like the rastaman Courtney John, for example. We met out in Jamaica and later I sent him some demos without giving him any particular instructions. He didn't let me down. But I love it when a few of us work on a track together. For example, Aqeel was round at my house for a day and we came up with 'It's All About'.'
Other musicians join the kitchen crew to cook us up a treat: the New Yorker Jahdan Blakkamoore at the microphone, Shawn Lee helping out on drums, Tommy Guerrero on guitar, and Guillaume Metenier giving it some swing on keyboards. All these folks are used to a melting pot of latin-soul, reggae-dancehall and jazz-funk with an additional, very cinematic feel to it. Whereas most songwriters try and pump up the sound a bit to get over the hurdle of the second album, Blundetto's approach has been the opposite, towards a pared-down, less madcap sound. The second album is a bad boy's who's tidied up his room a bit. Or his home studio, to be more precise - a room in his small flat between Barbès and the Gare du Nord packed with vinyl records, vintage machines, exotic percussion instruments and overflowing ashtrays. 'It's homely,' says the owner, 'in spite of the mess. I record everything here; I hardly ever go into a real studio. My record involves working with people on the other side of the world and also proves that Paris is like a village. For example, I was hell-bent on covering Aaron Neville's 'Hercules' and I was looking for a soul vocalist over in the States to sing it. And then I stumbled upon covers of Bill Wither by some greenhorn on YouTube beforefinding out that his name was Hugh Coltman and he lived three doors down from me. It's the same with the Parisian band Akalé Wubé who play ethio-jazz - we live almost next-door to each other.'
With the album due for release, its creator feels a little more comfortable about being an artist. Max Guiget has gone down to four days a week at Radio Nova to allow Blundetto to give it a real go. Anything might happen - he's even thinking about forming a trio to perform live. 'I've promised my record company that if a TV programme rings me up, then I'll go this time. Well, I might. Because I don't think the showbiz and dancefloor stuff is really where it's at. My tracks aren't that well suited to it, which is logical because I make them at home in a pretty enclosed atmosphere. I always listen to and record music at a sensible volume, and I like sounds that caress the front of the brain bulb gently. I try to produce an emotional response because that's what I appreciate in other people's music. I prefer my instrumentals to conjure up passion, melancholia or love rather than get everyone on the dancefloor.'
