Hip-Hop Vinyl New Releases - News
This 12" is the first in a series of follow ups to the 2002 release The Sampler Vol 1, which was a critically acclaimed hip hop instrumental album release on All Natural Inc. It follows in the same spirit as Vol 1. with heavy kicks, blazing chops, slamming snares, and plenty of innovation.

DJ Taye is one of Chicago Footwork crew Teklife's youngest producers, stepping up with his first full release for Hyperdub after some impressive tracks on the 'Hyperdub 10.1' and 'Next Life' compilations. The 'Break It Down' EP is invigorating from the word go. On the relentless stargate of 'Go Away' with DJ Paypal, smooth funk is chipmunked and chopped into a thousand digital shivers and starbursts over a tough grid of drums. 'That Love' featuring Tripletrain and DJ Manny is all romantic coos and seesawing keyboard riffs, micro-edited, stretched, chopped and spring -loaded in and out of comprehension. 'XTCC' in contrast is minimal and mournful, with the repeated phrase 'There's a void where there should be ecstasy' over drums that cut from half to double time, over a blanket of bass with sad chords slowly coming in towards the end. 'Break It Down' flips a ferocious yet minimal vocal cut up, coiled around a bristling vortex of detailed drum edits, before a goofy melod brings it to a close.

With our first release of 2016, we welcome one of South London's _nest, Dullah Beatz, with his EP "Ballys On". Known to the label for a while, Dullah has been around since Grime started but the availability of a lot of his beats has been sparse. So after a guest appearance on our first album, JT The Goon's "King Triton," we're proud to present Dullah's most substantial release yet. On the A side for the 12th release on Oil Gang, the orchestral minimalism of the title track gives way to the Indian scales of "Time," both of them full of sub and menace. Then on the B side, there's a track called... "Oil Gang". This was Dullah's choice, we're not just going on an ego trip. The echoes of the label's recent styles are there though, a JT style flute riding gunshot hats and amsfeedback. The last track, Floating, rounds up the EP with a bit of tribal space and steel drums riding Dullah's inimitable style. This is the first time theres been a proper Dullah Beatz statement on vinyl and we're really happy it gets to be us at Oil Gang that got to do it.

Endlich wieder normale Musik.

Back in the 90s, malt liquor brand St.Ides (launched in 1987) took over the rap world with endorsements from a who's who of hip hop stars and Ice Cube as its main ambassador, making it the coolest beer on Earth and, in the process, taking the number one spot from the classic Olde English 800 (founded in 1964) made famous by appearances on the covers of NWA's « NWA and The Posse » and Eazy-E's « It's On (Dr. Dre 187um Killa) » among many others. What made St.Ides' association with rappers special was the content it created: over 40 original songs with artists such as Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dogg, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, EPMD, Eric B & Rakim, Tha Dogg Pound, Warren G, Wu-Tang Clan, The Geto Boys, MC Eiht and others, as well as amazing TV ads (browse YouTube to find them). These 1 minute odes to the superb taste (and magical after effects) of the almighty St.Ides have been kind of a Holy Grail for obsessive fans of 90s hip hop, the rare official St.Ides promo cassette with a bunch of these tracks often selling for $200+ Ebay and Discogs.
Today we bring you 42 of these malt-flavored time-capsule raps ON VINYL, taken from various sources, re-mastered for full impact, but still raw, like the non-politically-correct era of hip hop it comes from.So crack a bottle, put the needle of the record and let St.Ides do the rest.

Underground slick yet daring Chicago veteran emcee Gilead7 of the Windy City super collective Tomorrow Kings has completed yet another audio diamond to accompany the already existing brilliance of his nationally and internationally distributed collection of uniquely-created albums. Known and respected by his scattered international cult following for not only his record collaborations and stage sharing with everyone from Vast Aire and A.G. but also his sonically experimental and lyrically razor-edged abrasive "art rap" for over 12 years, Gilead has etched an indelible place for himself in indie Hip-Hop, combining aggressive universe creation and quirky nerdom in ways that only he could pull off. Gilead has teamed up with La Puente, California's boom-bap esoteric master producer Subtrax to briefly return to the speaker-piercing breakbeats and avant garde jazz era sampled sounds that filled his first two basement cassette releases that garnered him his early tastes of Windy City notoriety. The newly-formed duo call this album "Peaces of War". Subtrax, co-founder of the well-respected Southern California-based hip-hop collective Echoes of Oratory Muzik and member of the crew Crop Circles 720, laces Gilead (the newest member of the Echoes crew and also now a resident of So Cal) with upper echelon production rooted in classic mid to late 90's boom bap and dusty roughness while maintaining a fresh sound conversant and on par with underground Hip-Hop's current state.
This is the last project of its kind, the official grand finale of an era. While many projects of late, in an attempt to stay relevant, take on the boom bap sound while softening it in either rhymes, production, or both, G7 and Subz stay even more relevant by delivering a project that is extremely sharp on both ends. Gilead's philosophy behind "Peaces of War" is this: everything in the universe is composed of a duality of disturbance (war) and serenity (peace), and one side never conquers the other. The album asserts to the listener that the realization of universal balance through peace and war ends the futile quest of trying to solve for either side. In "Shoveling", over Subtrax's sword-sharp rolling percussion and thick melancholy atmospheric wickedness, Gilead, I.B. Fokuz, and Clockwize embody the dualistic tension held between the underground and the mainstream, as they take on the character of miners digging through corrupted soil to discover the true priceless vinyl of the Gods hidden at the deepest levels. "Mask Wardrobe" with Word Man uniquely explores a type of what DuBois would call "double-consciousness" as we negotiate our non-European heritage within a Euro-American-dominated work culture for mental and ancestral survival. Over Subz's brooding drums and muddy piano sampled track, "Piece Offering" is literally Gilead's short rap lecture on religion, Afro-diasporic and Native Mesoamerican history, and the hypocrisy of hip-hop culture, offering broken "pieces" of misconceptions to the listener, who must inevitably hold on to them even though they're irreparably shattered. With the darkest, hardest, and strangely melodic sounds, unorthodox rhythms, secularly theological writing, and confrontational thoughts, Gilead7 and Subtrax have truly given the culture its last uncompromising boom bap record before the future, looking beyond the subgenre through the subgenre itself to see the next sound. The self-proclaimed last prophets of classic boom bap, Gilead7 and Subtrax present the final gospel of the glorious purely raw breakbeat and sample era of our youth, and completed it on the highest note possible. Now we can move toward the new, knowing full well that any needed eulogy to a "Golden Era" was sung in uncontained celebration in the annals of "Peaces of War".

World Expo Records continues to highlight the talent of the individual members in Soundsci. This time it's Oxygen's turn, in the form of MC Just Divine.
The two tracks on this 45 feature rhymes formed in the late eighties to early nineties from Ox's earliest incarnation as 'MC Just Divine'. Bought into a modern context with uptempo production by Soundsci's own Jonny Cuba on '1-4-9' and precision cuts by the group's DJ Ollie Teeba.
The super heavy flip side 'Droppin' Bombs', showcases Ox's effortless flows over a slinky Jazz Spastics/Slipmat Brothers beat.
The 45 has a fantastic illustration by Paul 'Sub2' Trewin that says all you need to know about MC Just Divine's intention.

Yogisoul, is one of three producers in the Mutual Intentions crew (Ivan Ave, Fredfades, Charlotte Dos Santos, Sun Raw & others). He is originally from Moss, a small town an hour outside Oslo, Norway. This guy grew up with hip hop all around him. He was introduced to all kinds of records at an early age. Yogi's spent years developing a unique sound and has been making songs for rappers and singers for a long time. Many listeners were introduced to his warm and soulful beats on the first Mutual Intentions cassette tape. Vinyl samples, dusty rhodes, thick-layered basslines and un-quantized crispy drums are essential to Yogi's sound.
Yogi was educated as an audio engineer at the University of Wolverhampton, hence he emphasises the quality of the sound of his production. Bridging the gap between the old and the new, SP1200, analog synths and the Maschine combo he uses has resulted in beats with a warm and precise character. While remaining in the hip hop genre, his production can also relate to soul singers and jazz musicians, which is demonstrated on his conceptual debut album By Nights'. This is a 14 track album that features Ivan Ave, MoRuf, Awon, LumiHD, Dialate, Kristoffer Eikrem and more.
Album Description
By Nights: Yogisoul's debut album. This exciting conceptual listen features guest appearances from Ivan Ave, MoRuf, Awon, LumiHD, Dialate and the instrumentalists Kristoffer Eikrem (Jazz Cats) and DeAndre Grover who appear throughout the project. The cover art is a photo taken of a dusk-time basket ball hoop, using a design by Dirty Hans.
The concept of By Nights came from a long stretch of late night beat-making, resulting in a batch of beats that all had an apparent red line. The sound of late night, early morning hip hop beats. While there's no doubt Yogisoul is a hip hop producer, the album clearly demonstrates creative versatility in blending inspirations and genres. From obvious hip hop tracks and instrumentals to jazz inspired souls tunes. The distinctive sound of his production is evident throughout the record. Dusty rhodes, analog synths, thick layered basslines and crispy drums are essential in Yogi's sound. The record was mastered at Strype Audio in Oslo to add the final touches in completing it's overall warm sound, which in turn resulted in an original and timeless piece of music.

Whenever I try to break down why I love music as much as I do, one element comes back to me again and again: discovery. I have enough records to last a lifetime (literally - I'm not sure if I'd be able to physically listen to all the records I own in whatever time I have left on the planet). My shelves are overflowing, my hard drive is full, and yet I keep listening, keep buying, keep searching. And that feeling of discovering that killer beat, that perfect track, that singular album is one that doesn't subside. Of course there's then the question of what you do with that discovery - my response has always led me to want to share it. Years before I started DJing, I'd find myself dragging friends to my stereo: "you've got to hear this tune". It led me to starting First Word Records in 2003 - finding music that I love and sharing it with the world.
I have a natural attraction to others who are equally addicted to the cycle of discovery and sharing of music and it's why my life has been so shaped by the radio DJs who educated me as a teenager. Growing up in the pre-internet era the power and responsibility held by radio DJs was huge, and one figure loomed larger than them all - John Peel. There has been much written about his unique talent and passion for music, I don't feel I can add much more to it, but on a personal level I just loved that I genuinely never knew what I was going to hear next, which in today's focus-grouped, play-listed culture seems almost impossible to imagine. When we were fortunate enough to be invited by the John Peel Archive to access his private collection for this, the third instalment in our RSD series, there was no hesitation. So it was that on a cold November afternoon that we found ourselves trawling through tens of thousands of records in rural England in search of inspiration. It was a day that I'll remember as long as I live and will be eternally grateful to Sheila and the Ravenscroft Family as well as Leon, James and the rest of the JPA team for their generosity and enthusiasm.
For those new to our Record Store Day projects, this is the third and final part of a trilogy of releases. For the first, the producers could each pick one record from Mr Thing's collection, for the second, he picked one record for each of them. They then were tasked with creating a new track from that singular sample source. This year is no different: each of the four tracks on these records were created using music sampled from the John Peel Archive. We discovered some incredible music that day and in your hands you are holding the results. It's a pleasure to share it with you...,.

Open Mike Eagle dominated End of Year Lists with his last album, "Dark Comedy" - making USA Today, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork's "Best of" Lists at the end of 2014. During 2015 he toured Europe & North America, as well as making television appearances on Comedy Centrals' "Why With Hannibal Burress" alongside Thundercat & Flying Lotus, Midnight w/ Chris Hardwick, and the Eric Andre Show. During all of this he completed his strongest album to date, "Hella Personal Film Festival" with UK producer Paul White.
You may know Paul White from his solo work, or his production work with Danny Brown, Homeboy Sandman, or Yasiin Bey (Mos Def). But, his work with Open Mike sets a new standard for cohesiveness and creativity. Eclectic, inspired and at times jarring, the sound is Arthouse Hiphop at its best.
The new album, "Hella Personal Film Festival," features are sparse and pointed, one from the legendary Aesop Rock and the other from Future Islands frontman Hemlock Ernst. The topics are profound and timely, fresh in their perspective. This is one for heavy rotation.

"J M S Khosa and Brassfoot are back with the second installment of their tape series and it's every bit as manic and deranged as the first offering. You may know Brassfoot from the hot records he's been dropping thick and fast on the likes of Apron Records, Unknown to the Unknown and Bio Rhythm and his collaboration with his Japan based friend J M Khosah is proving to be very fertile indeed. Swinging from jagged electro to mind crushing techno soundscapes to field recordings this is quality from start to finish." - The Ran$om Note

De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tounge Massive started with the Jungle Brothers. Their debut full length Straight Out the Jungle' opened up many doors that are walked through by today's artists like Mos Def, Common and even Kanye West. Their taste for jazzy horn samples helped kick-start the entire jazz-rap movement, and their James Brown fixation was one of the first. Plus, the group's groundbreaking collaboration with legendary house producer Todd Terry, I'll House You,' paved the way for numerous hip-house hybrids that shot up the dance and pop charts over the next few years and appeared to be a staple on every East Coast Rap Album from '88 until '92. The opening track Straight Out the Jungle' samples the classic Bill Withers drum break as the JB's tell you where they are coming from. Black Is Black' (featuring a young Q-Tip) and Sounds Of The Safari' introduces the pro-black edge, while the sexually subtle classics Jimbrowski' and I'm Gonna Do You' are funny, clever and timely. Hard, smart, fun, clever and brilliant, Mike G., Africa Baby Bam and Sammy G may not have realized it but they crafted a classic rap album that stands the test of time. Available here on high grade, loud pressed, double vinyl for the first time ever!

DJ Shadow, widely acknowledged as a crucial figure in the development of experimental, instrumental hip-hop, will return with 'The Mountain Will Fall' via Mass Appeal Records, his first full length release since 2011. The 12-track album finds DJ Shadow exploring new realms in addition to the deep samples and kinetic soundscapes that helped to launch his career 20 years ago. On 'The Mountain Will Fall' he's shifted further toward original composition, a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds. The album features Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm, Matthew Halsall, Ernie Fresh and more.

'Disaster Piece' is the heavy new album from one of the founding members of UK grime crew Roll
Deep, MC Flowdan. Carving his own path with his debut on Tru Thoughts, the record is a melodic grime
symphony built up of standout tunes which take you on a dark path, crossing all ilks of grime. Informed
by over 15 years in the game and infuenced by his upbringing in East London's Bow, Flowdan's Disaster
Piece is a hard, grity and bracing listen.
'Calling the album Masterpiece would have been a liberty', Flowdan states. 'I feel like I'm coming from
disaster. Like my area. I witnessed disaster from just a needlepoint. It just felt like it fted.' 'Disaster
Piece' unites unforgetable characters in the grime scene today, linking both purists and its younger dis-
ciples. Flowdan works alongside key producers like Masro, Swifa Beater and Dexplicit (who produced
Lethal Bizzle's 'POW') who hold nothing back on this release, and collaborates with original Roll Deep
crew members Tinchy Stryder and Manga, alongside the refreshing vocals of newcomer Animai.
Afer the success of his last release, 'Serious Business EP' [Hyperdub, 2014], Flowdan contnues the
charge with his album, fronted by the unstoppable 'Horror Show Style' single. The project has re-
ceived overwhelming early radio support from Sir Spyro (Rinse FM) and picked up tracton from grime
royalty like Wiley, Logan Sama and Dub Phizix & Strategy (BBC R1), Youngsta (Rinse FM), plus Julie
Adenuga (Beats1), Toddla T (BBC R1), DJ Target (BBC 1Xtra) and Radar Radio's essental BBK show.

Aïsha Devi's 'Of Matter And Spirit' LP encapsulated the spiritual metamorphosis and transcendental journeys of this other-worldly figure. 'Of Matter And Spirit Remixes' offers a series of new perspectives on the sonic wonders hidden within. Irish duo Lakker's take on 'Anatomy Of Light' adds a heavy dose of syncopated percussion. Recent Ninja Tune signing Throwing Shade transforms 'Kim & The Wheel of Life' into an introspective session. The remix EP boasts two reworks of 'Mazdâ'. Berlin's Mind:Body:Fitness interprets the track as a whirlpool of trance, and the spooky Killing Sound version features MC/vocalists Rafael Shafique and Bogues. The collection enhances and twists the ethereal beauty within 'Of Matter And Spirit' and leads this singular, meditative artist straight into the ritualism of the dancefloor.

The Estate of James Yancey has revived PayJay as a functioning imprint, and announced the release of J Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. The tracks come straight from multi-track masters found on 2-inch tape shortly after Dilla's passing in 2006. Many were mixed by Dilla himself. Those that weren't have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla's original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla's vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present. The Diary is an album of vocal performances recorded between in the early 2000s over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others.

Fetty Wap is a heartening hip-hop success story. He's a one-eyed kid from Paterson, New Jersey, whose voice sounds like someone Auto-Tuned a wounded Tauntaun, but the underdog charisma of hits like "My Way" and "Trap Queen" has turned him into one of this year's most endearing breakout stars. That same likability is all over his debut album. With a set list running up to 20 songs, it borders on Fetty overkill, but there are plenty of fine moments you haven't heard yet. Fetty saves his best self for soft-hued jams like "Rewind" and "D.A.M." "Would you like it if I kissed you now" he asks one lucky queen-to-be. Pucker up, world. This is a trap lord with a heart of gold.
