Running Back will mark its fifteenth anniversary with the release of its first label compilation, the Running Back Mastermix, in September. As befitting the celebration of a landmark year in the life of Gerd Janson's widely adored imprint, Janson has invited one of house music's original & greatest proponents of the Mastermix, NYC's Tony Humphries, to curate and mix the CD & digital editions of the compilation, accompanied by an unmixed double-LP which features a handful of the compilations rare & exclusive cuts. The Mastermix is a timely reminder of what has made Running Back endure and remain at the top of many house music fans' favourite label lists for over a decade. Beginning with Todd Terje's blockbuster 'Ragysh' and traversing tracks from across the label's history, it includes contributions from long time label regulars alongside more recent additions and reminders of some of RB's best reissues. New York producer and pianist Eric Maltz lives in Berlin. He produces and mixes his music in a simple, subtle and elegant way and puts his music out on his own label - Flower Myth.
In 2017, Eric Maltz released his first record on Levon Vincent's Novel Sound, including the splendid 'We Have Power', an ode to freedom and celebration of life, featuring the warm vocals of Peruvian Cristina Valentina.
On the brooding rhythmic dancefloor, Cristina's voice opens up and reminds of the power of a meaningful lyric, how a loving message can touch the heart ever so strongly.
Over the past year, 'We Have Power' has become a permanent fixture in the Possible Futures record bag. The two had to learn more about Eric and Cristina. 'Naked Broken' is the first engraving of this newly formed and inspiring musical friendship. A hot groover rooted in a rich NY House tradition, featuring di erent versions for the adventurous DJ.
Eric Maltz & Cristina Valentina played live in Berlin on September 2nd, for The Hot Run! - the annual Possible Futures open-air summer dance, along with Elena Colombi, Kassem Mosse, Sassy J and Tom Trago.

Belgian New Beat and trance influenced tracks by Betonkust, Innershades, Robert D and Deris. 'Familly Matters Vol.1 is a 5 track EP that counts as the start of a new series on the 9300 Records imprint. It's the proper result of combined forces by these trusted beat suppliers and freshman 'Deris'. Each of them delivered their own personal homage to the thriving Belgian nightlife in the late 80's and 90's, when clubs like Boccaccio and later Zillion acquired an almost legendary status. To this day, their iconic neon-signs are still etched in our collective memory. In a decade where serious scandals, that even involved bribery, lead to heavy political disputes and a huge health-crisis (the Dioxine crisis) predominated Belgian media, people were searching for a way to escape reality and these clubs helped them to leave this world behind through music and entertainment. At the end of 1999, a point of no return was reached for the federal government, but a musical legacy was built...

Back in February 2013, shortly after their impressive first release as a label, Music Is Love launched a double VA entitled Lovebox: an 8 track double-vinyl release that included tracks from 8 talented up-and-coming producers on their roster. By innovatively previewing the producers in this way, the label laid the foundations for what listeners could expect for each artists' subsequent EPs. The artists who released on it were not hyped up flavours of the month, but rather emerging talents who sat perfectly with the label's musical ethos - quality and original underground house with a contemporary, dynamic feel. Since the VA, the label have gone from strength to strength and have firmly established themselves as one of the most brightest house labels around in the UK.

Just over a year later and following in the success of its predecessor, MIL return with their second VA and with that, a chance for listeners to hear the new additions they've acquired, in addition to some already known faces. Liam Geddes opens proceedings with Untitled. A deep sense of soul permeates the whole track as a rumbling baseline imbues the beat with an ever-present sense of groove that never lets the head stop nodding. Geddes has really fine tuned and matured his sound over the past year, and this track is further evidence of his quality as a producer. The subtle percussive rhythms, electronic bleeps and synth nuances give this track a natural flow, as Geddes conjures something altogether more hypnotic, dark and purposeful.
Mr.KS, one of the newcomers to the label, outlines his coolly crafted style with track (Music) Makes Me Stronger. Brittle drums and deep warped synths suck you in and out and shape the structure of the beat, while afflicted chord patterns combine with the hypnotic repetition of a vocal sample to give the track a gesture towards techno but with a flow that pulls in house elements. Cassio Kohl introducers himself with a warm, melodic house number; rumbling synths circulate in the background of the track while ticking hi-hats and snares play off against the sumptuous vocal sample, which builds and falls back nicely into its original path until electronic glitches sporadically ease in and move the beat forward.

Jamie Trench has been making some serious headway of late and his track I Want You with Rebel serves a timely reminder of a producer on top form. A heavy, rolling baseline resonates intently, building against murky vocal samples, shuffling snares and off-beat key stabs that grow in presence and intensity - a track that will no doubt prove a high point in any DJ set. Label boss Oli Furness has a raw knack for creating crisp, heavy sounds and Take Monday Off remains on a similar path, albeit the beauty lies in the subtlety of arrangements rather than bigger hitting sounds. Chopped shimmying keys tease, filter and build fluently with urgent hi-hats and swinging drums that flourish harmoniously together, while an understated baseline adds weight and rhythmic groove typically inherent in Furness' work.

Italian heavyweight Tuccillo has released on some of the most reputable labels on the circuit - releases for 20:20 Vision and Freerange is evidence enough of his provenance - and this time he brings his baleric house sound with the impeccable sounds of DubFlanged Gru. Shimmering percussion shakes meander against the bumping bassline while the endearing, muffled vocals that threaten to break out are superseded by breeze-block keys that filter and descend into a chattering groove. Dutch producer U Know The Drill brings things back into heavier house territory with a no-nonsense, stripped-back stomper, the type of track we've been used to hearing on Dutch affiliates New Jack City's material. Heavy snares kick with a punch, and the deep drone-like vocal swings against the wobbling baseline and tapestry of electronic bleeps. Other sampled vocals and glitches weave in with the juxtaposing elements playing off one another to huge effect, ensuring that sheer energy pervades the track.

Jackson Ryland rounds off the heavy 8 track VA - scattering hi-hats and swirling pads build, while the shuffling drums roll on until fleeting chord flourishes and a musky vocal hook bring the track into wistful nostalgia. The elements of track balance superbly and are propelled forward by the intricate drum arrangements and well-crafted hi-hat/vocal combo.
The difference in approach and outcome from each artist results in yet another highly impressive outcome, with 8 high grade tracks that show another side to Music Is Love. The sounds are tougher and the mood is darker, but the premise of the whole MIL concept remains more apparent than ever with this release: sourcing fresh underground talent, curating original electronic music and evolving artists already on the roster.

James Dexter's star has been rising for a while now - the young Brit turning out killer tracks regularly on the back of hugely well received DJ sets. On his second outing for Dessous Recordings, Dexter does what he does best - four slices of deep, funky and vibing house music for the floor. Lead track 'Drift' is typical of Dexter's flair for subtle, edgy sounds, wrapped inside a warm and inviting groove. Elements come and go, but the shuffling, infection feel runs throughout. 'Take Me' is a more upfront vibe with a seriously bumping groove - Dexter clearly well versed in the roots of house music from Chicago. 'Whose Rules ' is a snappy, bright and lively production, with a sub bass that will troubler some of the world's best club systems in the coming months. The light, jazzy vocals offsets the groove perfectly - sure to be a big tune for a wide variety of DJs. The last track of the release is 'Disco Deep' - and it pretty much does exactly what it says - a swung, groovy feel punctuated by disco claps and balearic flourishes that will sound as good on the beach as in the basement.

After being absent for a while, Glance is returning with a uncompromising authentic record on Footjob. It recently has become quieter around the man who used to be a founding member of Running Back, but for this occasion he went and dug in his archives and came back with some beautiful old tracks, just to compile them in a classic, full of groove second Footjob EP. As a bonus he finishes and ends the record with two Downbeat sounding songs in reminiscence of his former genre crossing alter ego Siro. So this goes out to all the realkeeper, oldschooler und newcats. Glance is back on the map.

The first full artist EP of 2018 is one by a new artist for Heist, but a familiar name for any modern day house aficionado: Adryiano. After taking 2016 off, he came back guns blazing in 2017, releasing 5 solo ep's in 1 year on labels like Shall not Fade and Baka Gaijin. His Me and you and her' ep for Heist showcases his contemporary view on classic house and acid, and is an experiment into how much distortion a track can actually handle when you've got a killer sample hook. Me and you and her' is about as classic as a house track can be and moves in similar fashion as his post-2013 hit 'On my side'. It's got a sweet and repetitive vocal loop, some semi-grainy but definitely groovy percussion and a deceptively simple piano hook. Add some filtering and you've got a lovely warm house song that can go on forever. The A2 Move it, move it' moves straight into old-school Chicago territory, with a raw AF acid bassline. Chicago bred Jamie 3:26, now residing in it's Dutch counterpart Rotterdam, gives the track a nice old school twist. He's going full 707 on the percussion and has casually added an amazing synth hook to give the remix a true vibe of it's own. The ep closes off with Fashion country girl": Adryiano's dystopian view of a world where Dolly Parton gets mangled through an overdrive, then gets distorted, crushed, mangled, deleted, re-added in 8 bit and then crushed some more. The result is an uptempo roller with more than enough grit, and just enough tongue-in-cheek to make everyone smile a little bit more. Yours Sincerely, Maarten & Lars.

As owner and curator of the Exotic Dance Records label , J. Albert has released a steady handful of projects on his Brooklyn based imprint , as well as showcasing new music from Deejay Xanax and Person Of Interest . Marc Philipp's debut on What You Want seems to be a winner! The mighty Offenbach based producer showed already his potential on labels like Neostrictly, Pleasure Zone, Be Chosen, Subtil or Epilog - to name a few. We're happy to present him to you now on our label!

Ijsbrand & Gert had always wanted to create balkan inspired music, and hence came the duo Stavroz. Beyond just sharing the same musical tastes, these two buddies bond over both being sound engineers (live for Ijs, studio for Gert), which makes them real goldsmiths' behind each and every production (such can be seen in this short clip which presents their title The Ginning').
Their music is imprinted with original inspirations while keeping to a jazzy/burlesque influence, leaving little to be left displeased. The bridge, so it seems, borderlines between minimal and jazz-house.

The first title of the EP, The Ginning' is constructed around guitarist, Max Honckelinx. The track's instrumental harmony is skilfully constructed by the duo as they borderline minimal and deep house.

The second original title of the EP, The Finishing' is merely a dialogue between a rhythmic stratospheric universe and the sax of Nathan Daems, well preserved from the first studio recording. The end result leaves us with 8 minutes of lyricism soaked in sophistication and technicality.

In regards to the remixes, Felkon, who has been presented several times before on the Délicieuse, takes on The Ginning' by including vocals which create a more dance-like ambiance.
Britta Arnold, a legendary pioneer from Bar 25 and Katerholzig, worked on The Ginning' as well with Sascha Cawa. They delivered a version more obscure yet wickedly effective.

As for the remixes of The Finishing', Powel continues to captivate us while executing his deep and melancholic twists. He entirely redesigns the piece's structure by retiring the voice' of the sax.
And then there's our man, Viken Arman, who spins his version of The Finishing' by refiguring the rhythm pattern and adding a new dimension to the bass.

Dice's third studio album after '7 Dunham Place' and 'Underground Sound Suicide' sees him reflecting on his musical influences and connections to Dusseldorf and beyond. The album is packed with the producer's typically forceful tones, which blur the lines between house and techno. Utillising the bristling sounds and smooth drum beats, Dice's 'Love Letters' album serves as an aural embodiment of the tones which make his sound so unique. Throughout 'Love Letters', Dice uses his own vocals more frequently than on previous albums, which makes the production both trippier and more personal, representing past and present. Addressing his listeners via special sleeve inside the 3x12 vinyl album edition, Dice writes: 'It's been a while since I've released anything in the form of an album. This time everything happened differently than my previous albums where I had the story or the concept first and where the music was my soundtrack to that story. This time the music came first - making and collecting music, having a good time in the studio without any pressure. It was not clear at all what to do with all this. To release it or not, if I have club 12 singles, or if I should just keep everything... but it felt good.

The Other Man' is a unique collaboration between up-and-coming young Finnish producer Janne Tavi - the flag-bearer of Ibadan's next generation - and acclaimed Chicago house vocal legend Robert Owens. Roy Davis, Jr.'s Undaground Therapy Muzik label relaunches after almost 20 years with Al Zanders' Guidance EP. Al Zanders approach to his first EP of 2018 is as precise as it is whimsical. Featuring 4 tracks showing Zanders sheer versatile when it comes to making music. Opened by piano-percussion track Martha's Revenge which is made so clearly for dance floors, followed by Television, a chance for a closed- eyes boogie be it on a dance floor in the middle of a set, or on the sofa at home. On the b-side, Likes For Cash's comedic title is met in contrast with a piercing synth top-line and stripped back drums, with just enough of a bassline to sit in-between the drums and synths. Closing the EP is Guidance, a reflective and a chance for the EP to close as well as it would close a dance floor when the lights come on at the end of the night.

The label championed young and new talent from around the world within House & Disco music and remains home to some of Roy Davis Jr.'s most well known records today. To celebrate two decades of Skylax Records, label head Hardrock Striker teams up with long time friend and co-worker DJ Sprinkles as SKYLAX HOUSE EXPLOSION (S.H.E.). They present the second of three exclusive vinyl releases accompanying the Mix CD for the 20 Years Compilation. All three EPs will feature previously unreleased music curated by DJ Sprinkles and Hardrock Striker. 'I think of one time in New York when they wouldn't let me into the Loft, and I could hear they were actually playing one of my records on the dance floor at that very moment. I shit you not.' - DJ Sprinkles, Midtown 120 Blues (2008).

Few spaces have had such a formidable influence on dance music culture as David Mancuso's The Loft. Mancuso stripped the space he used for his invite-only parties of commercial value; ensuring they were legal, and navigating away from any bureaucratic licenses that come with selling food or alcohol. He insisted that people from all economic backgrounds had access to his space, the price of entry just about covering overheads and employing an IOU system on the door for those that needed it.

Under The Loft EP enlists DJ and producer from Istanbul, Sinan Kaya, who opens up the A side with a peak time stomper at 117bpm. His use of vocal sample lifts the track into an energetic contemporary house frenzy only to be re-contextualised on the flip by Slowdawn, whose early morning pads cushion the same sample under sparkles of vibraphone. Based in Canada, Slowdawn recently caught the eye of Hardrock Striker and Jus Ed and will be releasing more music for the latter this coming year.

Flabaire, like Hardrock Striker, is a fellow Parisian who has been co-running D.KO Records since 2013. On Riders In The Sun Flabaire employs a latin-style beat with bounce, and psychedelic organ runs all at 110bpm before giving way to the B side opened up by Love Island. Better known as Michele Lamacchia and previously releasing on Skylax's sub label A Fistful Of Wax, Love Island makes use of old skool mix names on Love Connection (Afterhours Mix); the sorts of mix names that, upon seeing a tracklist, you skip to and indulge in warm, 'deep' facets sure to be found on anything suited for the Afterhours.

Closing the EP on the B3 is Sameed Alexander Rezayan who back in 2015 had his second release out on SKYLAX. His closer, See Ma Thing On You cuts up the funk and channels one of the many sounds of the Loft. Mancuso loved disco and championed rare cuts of the genre in the 70s and the house that sampled it in the 90s; an apt remembrance of a space now lost.
