Mr G returns to his Phoenix G imprint to drop his new LP, 'Personal Momentz', on November 10th 2014.
2012's 'State of Flux' on Radio Slave's Rekids imprint was the last full-length from Mr G, along with his '
'Retrospective' compilation in 2013 the prolific British producer has spent the last four years delivering stand out singles on the likes of Running Back, Toi Toi and Don't Be Afraid as well as a renewed focus on his own, long running Phoenix G label.
The album itself is a sublime deliverance of the sound that has become so closely associated with the UK selector and artist - twelve raw & robust cuts that keep you locked from start to finish. As the title suggests the new project stems from particular inspiration and is best illuminated by the man himself.
'Well, ain't this a surprise Took me a year to do the last album and this one wrote itself over 10 days - my first times back in the studio ( aka The Heightz) since losing my Dad! As ever with me the music never lies and, through it, you'll see the twists and turns I take - outpouring inner vibez and hoping to get to a new destination .........., what/wherever that may be. These are Personal Moments rough rugged and Raw..... pushing some good air. Ohh, and I can hear the mixer needs a service so yep LoFi. Now I'm feeling as though I can see light showing it rays readying me to do battle again with that thing called life....... Hope you enjoy My collection of Personal Momentz.... Stunning new album from Chicago's finest electronic futurist Hieroglyphic Being, aka Jamal Moss, newly released on Soul Jazz Records. This is his third album for the label, following on from "The Acid Documents" in 2015, and African With Mainframes (w/ Noleian Reusse) "K.M.T." in 2016.
Born and based in Chicago, Moss's music embodies two of the cultural foundation blocks of the city's musical lineage, that of Chicago's original Acid House sound (c. 1986) - Frankie Knuckles, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson et al, alongside a rigorous experimental sound searching that taps into the cosmic musical lineage of pioneering artist Sun Ra whose Arkestra landed and was based in the city from 1946-61, and the equally pioneering work of 'The Art Ensemble' of Chicago in the 1960's and 70's.
The association with Sun Ra is by no means hypothetical, Moss recorded with the Arkestra leader Marshall Allen and a host of free jazz players for the album Hieroglyphic Being & JITU Ahn-Sahm-Buhl's 'We Are Not The First.' in 2015. Similarly, his relationship to Chicago's original acid house pioneers of the late 1980's is no hyperbole. Originally mentored by artist/producers Adonis and Steve Pointdexter, Moss also runs his own Mathematics label, releasing a constant stream of new music by foundation acid house pioneers Lil' Louis, Adonis and many others.
What clearly defines Moss's music is that while sometimes pushing the limits of sound to an ear-splitting dimension of experimentation and DIY-electronics - the music is always clearly a progression of the lineage of black music. In the words of fellow Chicagoans, 'The Art Ensemble' of Chicago, it is simply 'Great Black Music.'
And yet in this uniquely defined sound, Moss somehow manages to draw into this world elements of industrial music, German electronic music (Cluster, Harmonia etc), Detroit's sci-fi techno artists (Atkins, Saunderson, Craig) and more.
'Outsider House' 'Afro-Futurist' 'Rhythmic Cubism', Moss's near indescribable sound plays testament to the notion that he is perhaps the last of the line of producers directly influenced by Ron Hardy at the Music Box, uniquely qualified to write a new chapter of Chicago's rich musical history.
Red Notes is the prolific artists new revelatory and unique project - in his own words 'A homage to the Blue Note Jazz sound of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock' fused together with the classic Chicago House and Acid sensibilities of Larry Heard, Armando, Adonis et al, into a newly imagined futuristic and barrier-less musical landscape. Featuring organic and synthetic electronic instrument., Hieroglyphic Being here fuses real-time live instrumentation and over-dubbed technologies to dramatic effect, as analog and electronic worlds collide.

ick Lenoir and Larry Thompson aka Black Traxx dropped several volumes of their own brand of chopped up Disco sampling, deeper side of House. From 1991 through to 1994 the Black Traxx EP's were showing up in record stores, obviously giving respectful nods to other Chicago DJ's and producers the tracks included on the EP's contained a DIY spirit and rawness that were key ingredients. Lenoir, with the technical assistance of Gary 'Jackmaster' Wallace has revisited these classic releases for 2017 and the pair have turned in some special, exclusive extended versions of some of the highlights from the series.
This, the second sampler of Black Traxx cuts culled from the various volumes picks up nicely where part 1 left us off. If it's that raw, deep, basement Chicago House sound you're after then these guys have you covered. Kicking off with the 1993 remix of 'Dreamin' which is a sublime late night organ driven groover, this one ticks all the boxes if you dig that NY / NJ Garage sound, but with a Chi-town twist! 'Soul' is up next, lifted from 1993's 'The Soul Package' collection. A stripped back, vocal led jam steeped in atmosphere. This one is for the dancers for sure, no nonsense House music for heads and hips.
Flip it over and the B-side opens with 'Shake', a tough, gritty, percolating banger with a tribal-esque edge. This one's a weapon and almost fits into that Baltimore / Chicago 'ghetto House' mould. A proper club track, no prisoners taken. This one has been gently extended by Rick and Gary for maximum club pressure! EP finisher 'Party' is a much more subdued groove giving a respectful nod to the JB's with that infamous 'Paaaarty' chant. No frills in the best possible way this one's another solid club groove, pure food for hungry turntables and sound-systems. All of the tracks included on these samplers have been carefully selected, arranged, edited and extended for precisely these reasons!
This reissue has been realised with the full involvement of Rick Lenoir and Gary Wallace and is 100% legit! All exclusive extended edits have been made by Rick and Gary specifically for this release. Don't snooze, this one deserves a spot in any self respecting House heads record bag or DJ set, classic material made available again for 2017 - You can't stop it!

Crosstown Rebels assemble an A-star team of pioneers and legends for the next mammoth release on the label. 'Touch Your Body' comes courtesy of Felix Da Housecat, Jamie Principle and Vince Lawrence aka The 312 with sublime remixes from Moodymann.
Felix Da Housecat explains how growing up on south side of Chicago I was a huge fan of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle. Vince Lawrence was over at Chicago Trax and was the blueprint A&R and catalyst there signing anything hot. By this time I was around 14 and I had just made my first record 'Fantasy Girl', with DJ PIERRE. Over the years I was becoming obsessed with Jamie's sound. We soon became friends and always discussed working together and it took 15 years. Frankie's passing woke me up. I felt I wanted to do something special and it was time to fly back to Chicago to my roots. I wanted to go back where it all began and work with the originators. I called Vince and said I need your mind, guidance and your studio and all of us in one room to bring that spirit back in my soul. I told him we had Jamie Principle and the rest I guess is history. I wanted Crosstown for the project as I felt Damian was the only guy worthy and would understand and treat this project right. House Music needs this right now.. So here we are.'
Felix Da Housecat's career spans more than thirty years with two Grammy nominations. Never failing to impress, he now brings us his latest venture as producer of The 312 project. Jamie Principle is one of the most recognisable voices in the history of house music, featuring on some of the first house records ever made including the seminal 'Your Love' with Frankie Knuckles. Business man, producer and Trax Records organizer Vince Lawrence is another true Chicago house music innovator, responsible for the pivotal house track 'On & On' with Jesse Saunders and the 'Virgo Tracks' releases. Mahogani Music founder Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann grew up in Detroit with his first several releases appearing on Carl Craig's Planet E imprint. 2016 saw him next in the series to mix the respected 'DJ-Kicks' with outstanding results

Another slice of essential Knuckles / Principle magic, here the duo's love of Italo and Euro pop records seems to collide with Chicago's darkened dance-floors and raw drum machines. Perfectly sleazy and insanely danceable, Jamie Principles voice was made for Frankie Knuckles pristine productions and their unique styles compliment each other endlessly,
Both tracks featured on this 12" take us into the subterranean night life of Frankie and Jamie's world, a world of yearning, heart-break, love and acceptance. A huge pairing of tracks on their initial release and still to this day some 25+ years later, "It's A Cold World / Bad Boy" was a total game changer, almost verging on pop but too "outsider" to gain the mainstream attention it so deserved, the record stands today as a true classic. Truly ahead of it's time.
Re-released for 2015, re-mastered and re-pressed with all the original Trax label artwork present in conjunction with the official rights holders / owners.

New import label from Seance Centre & Smiling C, Toronto... linking up with Melbourne's Left Ear Records on this one.
LITIA=LOE’s Each Dawn Every Dawn is a nearly-lost existential house anthem from Chicago’s second generation, heavily under the influence of Ron Hardy, European EBM, and the struggle of daily life in the city’s marginalized neighbourhoods.
LITIA=LOE (Life In The Insane Asylum = Life On Earth) formed in Chicago amidst the burgeoning house movement of the 80’s. Leon Williams, Daryl Wilson, and brothers Grant and Simeon Rogers would meet up every weekend to soak up the sounds at local clubs like Music Box, Medusa, The PowerPlant, The Warehouse, and Frankie Knuckles’ Dance Palace, where DJs would mix everything from disco to new wave, industrial to house music. After the clubs closed, they would retreat to Leon’s basement to experiment with synths, inspired by what they had just witnessed at the clubs. Wired with excitement, they would stay up all-night, jamming and sequencing beats together late into the next afternoon.
Simeon was the technician of the group, programming drums, layering sounds, and finding the right synth textures. Leon was the creative wild card, coming up with conscious lyrics and vocal melodies and tweaking the sounds to be more expansive. Grant kept things anchored in song, composing and coming up with structures. Daryl helped compose a lot of the unreleased songs and was a great arranger and bass player, but decided to leave the band for personal reasons.
With a Tascam 8-track Portastudio, the group would cut rough tape mixes of their tunes to share with friends who would DJ the demos around town. Inspired by what they heard from groups like Nitzer Ebb, Bauhaus and Chris & Cosey, they came up with a track heavy with distortion and feedback. A tape of that track started circulating around the clubs, and legend has it that Lil Louis liked it so much he claimed it as his own. Realizing that competition was fierce in the DJ world, they decided to cut a record next time so they could lay claim to their work. This led to the release of Each Dawn Every Dawn, released on their own Facade label in 1989. The group distributed the record themselves, handing them out at clubs, and dropping them off at local shops and record pools.
At the time, the record barely made it out of Chicago, but the group did have a few chances at notoriety. Once with Rocky Jones of D.J. International Records who offered a “Blood contract” for joining the label. The group declined. In the mid 90’s they had an opportunity to open three nights with Living Colour, but the night before, one of the keyboardists got stage fright and they had to bail on the gigs.
Left Ear Records and Mixed Signals is proud to offer a new dawn for this incredible unsung group with a remastered DMM reissue of Each Dawn Every Dawn, including the original alternate mix called “The Morning After”. A redux of LITIA=LOE’s Life Love Dance EP will follow later this year.
