Tom And His Computer - Small Disasters Ep

TOM And His Computer is the newest alias for Copenhagen favourite Thomas Bertelsen. He started out as a teenager by looping and creating beats on his 4 track tape-recorder. Since then the very talented producer and DJ has been around the block. He produced two albums (with Lulu Rouge) and a number of songs, edits and remixes. He has also been DJing alongside Trentemøller every now and then since the early days and most recently TOM And His Computer performed live on the opening slot of Trentemøller's latest live tour and lately at Sonar Copenhagen 2015. Now we are happy and proud to present 'Small Disasters', TOM And His Computer's debut EP on Anders Trentemøller's label In My Room! Mixing elements as disparate as electronica, lo-fi guitars, driving beats, vocals and cinematic soundscape, this EP is a perfect example of why TOM And His Computer is tipped for big things in 2016. What maybe can be described as 'alternative electronic music' unfolds in different nuances. The lead track 'Organ' rides along on a crunchy rhythm track while throwing in psychedelic organs and howling electronics. Fizzing guitars weave in and project a paranoid undertone. Next up is 'Girl A Go Go' and its raw driving beat and bass hits in without any warning, before an agressive, hypnotising surf like guitar-riff comes in. Layers and layers of dirty distortion build a colapsing, overdriving climax. 'Tectonic' keeps the dark energy flowing, but packs it into a slow crawling creepy setting, drenched in reverb and noisy layers. Fraser McGuinness contributes the otherwordly vocals. Is he moaning Or conjuring Or proclaiming The song evolves from a fragile, fleeting feel into a massive, 'tectonic' pressure and all the way back. 'La Fountaine' completes the EP with another cut that perfectly fuses diverse elements from across the musical spectrum

VOYAGE
01.09.2016

Youandewan makes his Voyage debut with Luna Via, a three track EP sitting comfortably at home, above the ether.
The opening piece is spread across the A side, with two separate interpretations, 'Ciel' and 'Vessel'. 'Ciel' is the faster, uplifting predecessor to 'Vessel', which remains slow and nostalgic. On the flip, a touch of familiarity with the antonymously named Stranger (Glad Eye), a surging take on house music and Youandewan's various influences.
Luna Via is also accompanied by a full sleeve interpretation by Melbourne's Sprinkles.

Her beauty too radiant to be beheld. Stark and striking, at once an object of desire and lust. Carved by the hand of a king, brought to life by the gods; hers is a story now captured in modern day ivory; vinyl. Her image, one that embodies earth and heaven, now marries two worlds; Eastern atmospherics and Western aromatics. Like the first glimpse of the fabled temptress, these first sounds of Galatea will never to be forgotten.

Disconnection - Bali Haí

Originally released on the mighty Y Records in 1982, this single by Disconnection was a mutant disco cover version of a song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical, South Pacific which was made into a blockbuster film in 1958.

An odd choice of a song to cover Well, something was in the air back in '82 as at almost exactly the same time the Disconnection record was released Captain Sensible covered Happy Talk' from South Pacific and had a UK number 1 with it. I'd like to think he got the idea after hearing Bali Ha'i' but that would be pure speculation. What I do know is that even though the Disconnection record made barely a ripple at the time it is by far the superior record. Vocals are by Angela Jaeger

Long sought after and going for stupid money on Discogs, as a long time Y Records freak I am very honoured to have been given permission to make this curiously great record available again and to give it a home in the Optimo Music Disco Plates series. Dick O'Dell's Y Records released so many great records - The Slits, The Pop Group, PIgbag, Sun Ra, Pulsallama, Shriekback, Maximum Joy, The Tesco Bombers and Mouth amongst others - and this one is up there with the best of them.

It is released in the original configuration, Radio Mix, US Discomix and UK Discomix versions alongside the faux exotica delight that is the Angela Jaeger penned Aaaah'. It comes in a shrink-wrapped black disco bag with a 12' x 12' insert featuring the original front sleeve artwork.

Fantastic limited reissue of one of the holy grails of the Balearic scene. Recorded in 1981 by Guy Cuevas, a Cuban-born DJ living in Paris, every track is a killer. Side A features the full seven minute 12' version of 'Ebony Games' an epic Latin-tinged disco-funk floor-filler and for most the stand-out track, but Side B's mesmerising dubbed-out 'Everywhere Is My Home' and the sweet slo-mo groover 'Inside My Mind' are also brilliant. Ian Blevins - Resume B/w Poor Old Head

Ian Blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. This is his second offering for the ESP Institute. Picking up right where we left off, side A unleashes another explosive big room belter with Resumé—a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in Ian's drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. Akin to Hannibal, Blevins' ESP Institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. On side B, Poor Old Head utilizes Ian's signature drum styling we've come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression.
These two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

Jose Manuel - Excursion Africanism

Prolific Italian DJ and producer José Manuel releases his debut concept album 'Excursion Africanism' on the highly respected Copenhagen based Music For Dreams label.
José Manuel began his DJ career in clubs in Italy at the age of 16 and has since gone on to produce and release singles on esteemed Belgian label Eskimo Recordings, cool Parisian label Kill The DJ and collaborated with others such as Tusk, Wax, Kinfolk, Cocktail D'Amore, Above Machine, and Is It Balearic
On this new double vinyl LP 'Excursion Africanism', José Manuel delivers innovative and deeply percussive tribal grooves washed with voices and sounds of the African continent. The album includes the singles 'Bilimbosa' with its relaxed percussive guitar groove and stunning vocal delivery from Babacar Dieng and 'Babylon' which also features Dieng's spiritual voice this time fused with a raw voodoo rhythm.
Other highlights are the tribalistic and dreamy 'Macumba'; the chanting ambience of 'Voices of Africa'; 'Rain' - nomadic village chill out with savannah beats and the funky percussive world groove of 'Congo'. Afrobeat drumming, electronic textures and cinematic accordion become the template for 'Magic' while 'Excursion Africanism Part 3' is spaced out futuristic roots music for the global generation. The original of 'Hungry' is laden with jungle beats, strong bass and repeated afro choir, plus we have a special bonus version - the sublime afro trance dub by Ibiza legend Leo Mas and partner Fabrice.
'Excursion Africanism' is a visionary concept album written, produced, and arranged by José Manuel that succeeds in combining a sense of Balearic beats, world music and Afro acid within a template of space disco. Don't miss...

Dancing & Romancing

CDEXPDR01
Exploited
30.09.2016

30

Shir Khan's Exploited Recordings has always stood out as a label with serious ambitions. From the consistent quality of its prolific output to its early championing of many a dance music star to its diverse array of sounds, it has felt like a highly accomplished offering even since its earliest days. Now one of house music's biggest labels, it has come a long way since its humble beginnings in Berlin. Dancing & Romancing gives a snapshot of the imprint's last five years, charting its story from contender to heavyweight in stunning fashion.
Label boss Shir Khan's excellent A&R skills proceed him by this point, but taking stock of just a fraction of what he's signed along the way in these 30 tracks really drives his reputation home. From breaking Claptone as an unknown artist to helping him become one of the biggest-selling names in dance music to introducing the world to other major players like Adana Twins, Doctor Dru and Joyce Muniz, he has unearthed a staggering amount of talent in such a short space of time.
Browse through the label's 150+ releases and you'll also see an impressive plethora of acclaimed names from across the house, techno and disco sphere: Metronomy, Modeselektor, Siriusmo, Munk, Julio Bashmore, Michael Mayer, Fort Romeau, Untold, John Tejada, Phil Weeks, Riva Starr, Cosmin TRG, Freeform Five, DJ Sneak, Locked Groove, Deetron, Detroit Swindle, Acid Pauli, Ralph Lawson, Fred Falke... the list goes on and on.
Dancing & Romancing showcases some of the label's high points from the last half decade, attempting to provide a summary of what Exploited is all about. From resolute club bangers to tracks that sound as good on your home stereo as they do on the dancefloor, it's a compilation that reminds us that dance music is no longer simply the preserve of the clubs but something bigger and further-reaching than it's ever been.
Big vocal anthems like Claptone feat. Jaw's No Eyes and Murphy Jax feat. Mike Dunn's Let's Get To It sit alongside charismatic instrumentals such as dreamy Cocolores' Vox and Urulu's rolling 1991. Sample-heavy classics like Adana Twins' Strange and Doctor Dru's Voice Of Dru contrast with the cutting-edge freshness of Light Year's Never Know and Sirens Of Lesbos' 7 Years In Tibet. We're reminded of the the number of excellent new vocalists who have graced the label, from Anabel Englund's seductive tones alongside Human Life on El Diablo to Daudi Matsiko's haunting delivery with Kyodai on Houston In The Blind.
From nu disco to acid to melodic techno to fist-pumping house, the breadth of the label's output is neatly encapsulated in these 30 enduring tracks. Released as a double CD and triple vinyl (including label classics appearing for the first time on wax) as well as in a deluxe box set edition.

Adriani & Ventura - Changing / State Of Art - Venice (newclear Waves Remix) 7"

Two generations of Italian music history come together on this split 7. Milan meets Rome, Fred Ventura meets Alessandro Adriani. For this occasion Adriani and Ventura covered the 82' evergreen 'Changing' by Bill Bruce. The perfect combination to pay homage to this monumental piece of music. On the flip side Fred's early 80's new wave band State Of Art got the remix treatment by Alessandro's moniker Newclear Waves. Another unique match of these two key figures preserving the 80's underground sound of Italy.

Manhooker Feat. Miss Plug Inn - I Am Disco

Strutting out of Bordello A Parigi comes the mysterious Manhooker declaring proudly I Am Disco. With Miss Plug Inn the track is a smouldering piece of sex soaked funk. Breathy vocals, deep bass and melting synths come together in a cocktail of late night slow dance sleekness. Three fellow Berlin inhabitants add their slant to this midnight music medley. S.Sic pushes effortlessly smooth lines, raising rhythms and pulses with a grooving remake. Massimiliano Pagliara keeps the lights low as hints of house silkily introduce the flip. The track builds and lyrics drip with romance. Piano keys and subtle harmonies blend for a blazer that will undoubtedly ignite floors. As morning dawns Bonomo LeMagass keeps the fires burning. The 90s echo in a finale steeped in softened keys and warming chords for a cracking close. An addictive introduction to the world of Manhooker.

Black Booby - Bb-08

BLACK BOOBY
18.06.2015

Richard Rogers' Black Booby project returns to its re-edit roots after taking a brief Chi-town house diversion with Gene Hunt & co on BB07. This time around Rogers takes the reins himself for four lush re-works of classic, though obscure, tracks.

First up on the A-side there's 'Sunlab Export', an edit of the super-unknown 'Laxton Superb' by Dutch 80s electronic outfit Spectral Display. As Rogers puts it, "It's just an ethereal, twilight groove that's extended and ripened like a forbidden fruit. It's a good tune but the original had some key changes that take away from the main groove, so they had to go...

Next up is 'I Need Somebody Raw' a new take on disco's campest hero Sylvester's 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight'. "I loved the wonky bassline of the original," Rogers explains, "so I wanted to give this one more of a dancefloor feel and to set the tone for the BB10 special, where I really go to town on old Sylvester!

Then moving onto the B-side, we have 'Jungle Booby' which is already attracting some underground heat, as this reworking of late 70s French disco group Kikrokos' track 'Jungle D.J.' sees Rogers take the original's intro for a long session on the dancefloor in its own right, 'I found out about Kikrokos from the Members Only edits and I wanted to create a whole track of the intro, so the strings got changed up to create a fuller section and highlight that super special bassline.'

Finally, 'And She Walks', Rogers' take on Kazino's 'Binary', sees him revamp the original B-side by highlighting its darker sonic sensibilities. In his own words, 'It's a driving, hostile rhythm track underlying a foreboding song, which has been reworked to bring out the menace in the groove - there was a relentlessness on the original B-side that we wanted to heighten.'

12inchNADO020
AFICIONADO RECORDINGS
22.09.2016

Arriving at their 20th release in typically eclectic fashion, Nado turn from a laidback Luke to a Tasmanian devil, summoning synth mystic Bronze Savage to bring his unique electronics to their unstoppable imprint. Hailing from Hobart's piers rather than pavements, the Australian producer trades in a sun-bleached house sound alive with ocean spray and salty air, perfect for playing at that magic hour when the sun dips into the sea.
The keen-eared may have caught Savage's collaborative cassette release with Roland Tings on Vancouver's 1080p back in 2013, but this release marks the producer's first appearance on vinyl and on his own; a testament to Moonboots' and Boardman's A&R expertise. Oceanic textures and interlocking sequences invite us into the EP opening 'Waxed Apple', combining beautifully with heat treated percussion and rolling bass to set the evening in motion. Slow, slinky but still slightly slamming, this glittering taste of Balearic house should sit very nicely next to Andras Fox and A Vision Of Panorama's additions on the imprint.
The sampledelic 'Forgive Me' follows on like a poolside parley between Art Of Noise and a catatonically stoned Front 242, boasting thick bass, dreamy synths and some expert sample manipulation. Closing the A-side out in St. Tropez splendour is the simmering and sultry house of 'Body Glo', a Rousseau painted with tropical birdsong, phasing synth washes, deep house pads and the vaguest hint of digidub.Things take a turn for both the lysergic and the cosmic on the flip as Bronze Savage launches the metronomic 'Krang's Makeover' into the clear sky. Putting his own antipodean twist on the typically Scandinavian space Disco sound, the producer fuses the acidic and the aquatic via bubbling sine waves, expansive textures and a driving 303 which propels us up into the atmosphere. The world looks peaceful from way up there, and the dreamy 'Spearmint Milk' is the perfect soundtrack to our celestial explorations. Tracing a hazy shape with chimes, washes and wriggling bass, Savage brings proceedings to a close with a touch of cool and calm electronic in line with Larry Heard's majestic 'Sceneries Not Songs'. Officially Aficionado.

I Like Disco

FUTURE BOOGIE RECORDINGS
23.09.2016

Futureboogie open their 2015 account with this killer slab of sophisticated twisted disco from Lonely Boy, AKA Joshua Heath. The Californian producer has a track record for finely crafted house music on labels like Miguel Migs' Salted Music and the Inland Knights' Drop Music. His Lonely Boy moniker has yielded music for Culprit and Winding Road, and this FBR release comes backed with an epic remix from The Emperor Machine.
An ode to a love affair with the original vintage disco sounds, with its sophisticated bass and clean drums echoing shades of classic Prelude tunes of yesteryear, 'I Like Disco' is a spot on nod to the authentic sound that seemingly will never be out of fashion. Its simple male rephrase reminds us just what we're dealing with here, as the soft keys play call and response with that funky bass riff, and thick, rising pads create the drama.
The Emperor Machine rocks up on the remix, fresh from a period of intense activity, including albums for Southern Fired and the now defunct D.C. Recordings. The former Bizarre Inc. and Chicken Lips has also been busy remixing the likes of Booka Shade, Erol Alkan and Daft Punk, so a real scoop to get him on Futureboogie. Weighing in at over 10 minutes, the good Emperor builds a dubtastic version, stretching out the good groove and bringing it back to the basics. A playful remix with brain scrambling metallic flanging, stuttering bass, electro-funk synths and heaps of dubby delays, a monster of a remix!
'The Subtle Frenzy' continues the quality vibes with an arpeggio synth that works it way around your brain and moody pads and wonky keys that build the atmosphere a treat. A monster electrofunk workout with a heavyweight growling bassline that continually pushes the track into a 'subtle frenzy'.
Digital bonus track, 'Take Your Time' slows down the pace with an orgy of synthesizers and chugging beats, a perfect wind down/sunset/sunrise (circle where appropriate) moment! A class cut that shows the versatility of Lonely Boy's productions...

Africaine 808 - Basar (2lp+mp3)

Berlin based duo Africaine 808 will release their debut album 'Basar' via NY imprint Golf Channel (home to Mark E, Juju & Jordash and DJ Nature) in January next year.

'Basar' pushes their divine blend of West African bass and rhythms, disco, island-funk and house to newer heights. Their deep and timeless debut is about 'Freedom and Freedom only' and is an album that reaches for the party Arthur Russell was talking about when he said 'I wanna see all my friends at once.'

Africaine 808 are Dirk Leyers, formerly one half of Closer Musik, and Berlin DJ and established artist Nomad. The pair met in Berlin at the city's annual summer techno demonstration Fuckparade in 2000, where they caught the infamous 'Techno Viking' scene live as it unfolded. Nomad got his first drum aged 6 years old, from a church collective yard sale. Now an avid collector of African influenced musical styles, from South African Shangaan to Westafrican Funk, his rhythmic quest has lead him to study and explore African and world music for almost 3 decades. The Africaine 808 project grew out of Nomad's Vulkandance parties, a melting pot of African, Latin, and Caribbean club music.

The title 'Basar' comes from the ancient term for 'oriental marketplace", a place to experience a multitude of impressions with your senses. Like an exotic marketplace, 'Basar' is filled with different sights and sounds around every corner. From the deep and mystical 'NGONI' which takes West African music to the rave with wobbling bass and hints of 90s ethno-dub to the killer squirmer of a bassline on 'Language of the Bass ft. Alex Voices' which keeps things heavy but nimble whilst recapturing UK bass histrionics. The smokey, soulful tones of OFRIN on 'Ready For Something New' offers a mystical downbeat gem. Whereas 'Basa Basa' takes it back to the dancefloor for a sweaty rhythmic number that bounces off the walls with it's tribal funk groove. Recent 12' single 'Rhythm Is All You Can Dance' also makes an appearance, wedding funk, earthy rhythms and frenzied African grooves to the gurgle of an 808.

The duo made their debut back in 2013 with 'Tummy Tummy', which featured on Will Speculators W.T. Recordings compilation "DJ MUSCLE." The following year Golf Channel put out "Lagos New York." Pairing New York flecked disco with West African bass and rhythms, "Lagos New York" made for one of 2014's most essential electronic releases.

Having found the right home with one of the best labels (and parties) in New York City, the Berliners debut album 'Basar' has the feeling of an essential piece of music all over - a big, brooding, emotional and uplifting record that you can dance, laugh and cry to.

A-Z is a new label started by Al Zanders !
This stand-out new production talent has already, across only a handful of releases (As Lodger on the Stamp label & under his own name on Karakul & Blind Jacks Journey) made quite a name for himself ! A-Z is a new platform for his distinctive and eclectic output After sharing a stage at Shambala festival, Al was impressed by the 7 piece Sheffield group Hot Diamond Aces, who sent the crowd into a dancing frenzy with their bombastic brass licks and Afro-beat inspired rhythms.
So impressed in fact, that he approached them afterwards with the idea of doing a remix and starting a label. The reworked version of 'DSOMC' is a certified corker that has already been tearing up dancefloors. For the flip, things get deeper with an unashamedly happy House jam 'Raiz', which features some twinkling keys from Sleepsang.
Perfect for the summer!

Cherry Garcia - Vine Of Souls

Earlier this year I received three tracks of hazy Brazilian dancehall-psych, precise bursts of trembling energy and breathless meaning, invoking cellular consciousness, seed consciousness, the brain of cellular life... Odes glorifying the DNA code...

I gazed up at the grey gate of Heaven with a foreign eye and yelled 'What is this shit!'

I got my answer: "Cherry Garcia man...that's all you need to know"

No further questions!

Golf Channel every time !

Dennis Bovell - Heaven

At last! This one took literally years to piece together. Does Dennis Bovell need an introduction I think not but in case you don't know, he is a musical polymath, top flight producer, dub legend and one of the finest artists the UK has ever produced.

Optimo Music has worked with Dennis before when he went into Green Door studios and dubbed out Golden Teacher to the max. This Disco Plate EP was already in the works before then but various circumstances caused it to take until now to see the light of day.

In 1981 Dennis released his solo album, "Brain Damage". A double album that fused afro beat, funk, dub, jazz, blues and styles that have still to be genre-fied, it went over most people's heads and is now a mainly forgotten masterpiece.

From that album we present on the A side, the magnificent "Heaven", a disco dub afro-sound dance floor bomb that somehow manages to sound more current today than it did 35 years ago. Also included is a slightly edited version that removes some of the vocals to focus on the groove a little more.

On the AA side is the legendary "Escape Goat Dub". Back in 1981, Dennis Bovell was perhaps thee hot producer of the day. Epic Records put Dennis in the studio with singer songwriter Garland Jeffreys to work on his new album. It turned out Mr. Jeffreys was a big dub fan so most of the studio time was spent doing wild dub tracks instead of the singer song writer type tracks the label was anticipating. The wildest of those was "Escape Goat Dub" which must be up there in the greatest dubs ever to shake the world. The label was patently at a loss as to what to do with it so stuck it out as a promo only 12" in France, and there it lay forgotten. After a long search Twitch picked up a copy in Rennes a few years back and got permission from Mr. Bovell and Mr. Jeffreys to put it out again. It's not an expensive record or a mega rare record, just little known and definitely deserving to be heard by new ears. Epic dub abounds.

The AA2 is "Smouche", another track from "Brain Damage"; 3 minutes of dub, funk inflected Moogy summery joy.
