Jon Mueller's Death Blues - Ensemble

16 page hardback full color 12" book, incl. 2 digital Bonus Tracks,
An elaborate book/LP/digital release that features seven essays about our vulnerability. The audio is an orchestral soundtrack crafted by Mueller and composer/multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch over the course of two years. Like the essays, the music exemplifies complex emotional and textural layers via strings, woodwinds, percussion, and wordless vocals, ranging from cinematic and dreamful to thundering and powerful over the course of its nine tracks

Winston Turner Quintet - At The Jamaica Hilton: In The Jippi Jappa Lounge

In the heyday of the Rocksteady era of Jamaican music in 1968, the Winston Turner Quintet was blending in the cool new sound with Calypso, Jazz, Bossa Nova, Pop and Ballads down at the Hilton Hotel in Kingston. The Quintet's lost classic of down tempo and mood music, originally released on Federal, is now re-issued for the first time. This is the lounge vibe that beautifully crowned those sultry Jamaican nights. (Photograph taken at the Jippi Jappa Lounge with Madam Wasp).

Sun Ra & His Astro-infinity Arkestra - Sign Of The Myth

In 1972, Sun Ra inked a high-profile deal with ABC / Impulse, bringing his recorded work to the widest audience he'd had to date. A slew of Saturn back catalog titles and two newly-recorded albums (Astro Black, Pathways To Unknown Worlds) were issued before ABC cancelled the contract, dumped the records into the cut-out bins, and left the unreleased albums to languish. Now, over four decades later, Roaratorio is proud to offer one of the lost Impulse recordings for the first time. Sign Of The Myth hails from the same studio session as Pathways, and shares its emphasis on guided improvisations. With a constantly shifting palette of Moog textures, Ra tosses off a dazzling array of ideas throughout, supported by the usual Arkestra stalwarts; in particular, bassist Ronnie Boykins and drummer Clifford Jarvis are in shining form here, giving shape and solidity to these pieces. Sign Of The Myth is a welcome augmentation to an especially fertile period from Sun Ra's time on Earth.

  • D3: Jabula - Ithumeleng Ba Mamelodi

Following the label's acclaimed 'Next Stop Soweto' compilation series, Strut returns to the rich music heritage of South Africa for another landmark compilation celebrating the influential and heavily political music of drummer Julian Bahula since the mid-'60s with the Malombo Jazz Makers, Jabula and Jazz Afrika bands.
Bahula's first group was the Malombo Jazzmen, led by guitarist Philip Tabane with flautist Abbey Cindi and they broke the mould, introducing indigenous malombo drums alongside guitar and flute to create a strong new cultural jazz fusion. In 1964, the group took the Castle Lager jazz festival by storm, South Africa's biggest annual jazz event. Within a year, Bahula and Cindi had parted company with Tabane, and guitarist Lucky
Ranku had come on board to form the Malombo Jazz Makers. By the end of the 1960s, they had established themselves as South Africa's foremost afro-centric jazz group. In 1971, they made a clandestine tour of South Africa with Steve Biko and TECON (Theatre Council of Natal) Players, using music and theatre to promote black awareness and identity as part of Biko's Black Consciousness message.
As the pressure of apartheid started to bear down on them, Julian Bahula escaped to political exile in the UK. He settled in London in February 1973 following a tour with white afro-rock band Hawk. Joined by Lucky Ranku shortly afterwards, Bahula formed a new afro super-group, Jabula, through which malombo music was transformed into a vehicle that could take a powerful political message from South Africa to audiences in Europe and across the world. The band worked closely and selflessly with the exiled ANC, the Anti-Apartheid Movement and other anti-apartheid organisations to help spread political awareness.
Bahula and his wife Liza also started London's first regular night to promote live African music at London's 100 Club during the '80s. In '83, they set up the first concert in the UK to raise awareness for Nelson Mandela, 'African Sounds', an event that helped to kickstart the international pressure that would lead to Mandela's release in 1990. The Specials' Jerry Dammers was there and was inspired by Jabula's track 'Mandela' to write the huge hit for The Special AKA, 'Nelson Mandela'.
'Spirit Of Malombo' documents Bahula's incredible musical journey from 1966 to 1984 for the first time. Package includes rare photos, poster artwork and memorabilia with extensive sleeve notes from author Francis Gooding. The cover features a still from leading South African photographer, Ernest Cole.

Mean Love

Polydor Germany
18.09.2014

MP3 Album.

Francis Bebey - Psychedelic Sanza 198 2x12"

BEBEY, FRANCIS - PSYCHEDELIC SANZA 1982-1984 (2LP)
A double-LP set with a printed innersleeve which tells the inside story -written by Francis Bebey's son- of how he got to learn about the Sanza, a special African instrument. On this album guitar player, singer, composer and writer Francis Bebey (1929-2001) revisits the roots of his African music, playing sanza (the instrument on the picture), flutes and drums. Exploring these traditional patterns allows him to produce universal sounds, which was one of Francis Bebey's aspirations.

John Gibbs & Jam Band / Asphal - J'ouvert / Freakin' Time

Superb double A-sided 12' from TEC Records, reissuing two of the rarest and most sought-after tracks ever released on the tiny US disco label. First up is super-funky Cosmic groover 'J'Ouvert', from John Gibbs with The Jam Band, As you'd expect from the title, this track has more than a nod to Carnival a with tropical feel and traditional steel drums but in a weird spaced-out disco arrangement that made this a favourite at David Mancuso's infamous Loft as well as on the afro-funky scene. On the flip, we have the mighty 'Freakin' Time' from MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra rhythm maestro Keith Benson. Originally split into Parts 1 and 2 and released on 2 sides of a 7' and 12', here the two tracks are seamlessly edited together for maximum long-playing dancefloor impact. With heavy hypnotic drums, sexy vocals, dirty grooving bass, this is a real must-have. Great chance to get your hands on two disco funk masterpieces!

Dona Onete - Feiti O Cabloco

A vibrant blend of Paranese folklore, carimbó, boi bumba, Caribbean salsa, brega, samba and even
rap, all rooted in the cultures of the Brazilian interior, this phenomenal debut album from Amazoni-
an septuagenarian songstress Dona Onete has been over 60 years in the making and almost never
happened...
Sat on the banks of the Amazonian river in the small town of Igarapé Miri as an 11 year old, singing
sambas, quadrilhas and boi bumbas to the river dolphins, Dona Onete could have scarcely imagined
she'd be seeing the worldwide release of her debut album at the age of 73.
Moving to the quiet area of Pedreira in Belém, Brazil, to while away the rest of her days with her
husband, Onete inadvertently moved onto a street where popular Brazilian band Coletvo Radio Cipó
lived. The band, hearing Dona perform at a local carimbó party, initally thought they were listening
to a much younger singer - due to Onete's vivacious and firtatous fair, along with her penchant for a
cheeky lyric or two. But when they caught sight of her, they were astounded. Knowing they'd stumbled
upon someone truly special, the band instantly invited her to sing on their forthcoming album.
Onete took some convincing but eventually relented, a decision that would lead to her recording as an
artst in her own right and see her audience of river dolphins on the banks of the Amazon transform
into the people of the cites of Brazil, and now the world.

V/a - Music From Planet Earth - A Soundway Collection

'Music from Planet Earth' is compilaton of music selected from some of Soundway Records' current
roster of actve artsts. More than ever in 2014 the moniker 'world music' seems redundant. A term
used to lump everything that isn't from a certain place or sung in a dominant language into one cate-
gory that receives less atenton from nearly all mainstream music media is an unhelpful one to say the
least.
Soundway Records aims to support new (and old) music that doesn't always ft into a convenient
genre. That could be a band based in London formed of musicians from 6 countries making hybrid pop
music sung in a Nigerian dialect. It could be music made in South Africa by fve people of completely
diferent age, race and background. It could be synth-funk sung in Spanish and English by a New York
natve of Cuban heritage. It could be made by an English producer who hooked up with purveyor of
psychedelic cumbia from Bogota and put together a super-group of Colombian session players. Or an
Angolan-born Portuguese producer based in Lisbon working with MCs, dancers and musicians from
Nairobi, Luanda and Newcastle. A collectve of Aucklanders with backgrounds as diverse as Nigeria,
Trinidad and Sudan rocking crowds and making music in New Zealand. Surrealist Electronica with Ara-
bic vocals from Britany by way of Brooklyn or Spanish / Sri Lankan experimental sound textures forged
late at night in Camden Town.
Call it anything, we might not have the answers just please stop calling it 'world music'.

Aby Ngana Diop - Liital

Senegalese griot Aby Ngana Diop was famous for her taasu, a form of oral poetry spoken to the rhythmic accompaniment of sabar and tama drums. Taasu is typically created and performed by griot women (a class of poets, storytellers and/or musicians), with a lead taasukat (practitioner of taasu) performing her distinct style of heightened, rhythmically declaimed speech in call-and-response with a small chorus of female vocalists. (Taasu is seen by some to be a predecessor to rap.) Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Diop developed a reputation for being one of the most sought-after taasukats in Dakar, performing with her backup singers, dancers and drummers at parties, weddings and baptisms of the Dakar elite, including government officials and dignitaries. Aby Ngana Diop was undisputedly the best taasukat of her generation.! In 1994, the Dakar diva released her one and only studio cassette recording, Liital, to the Senegalese market. Liital was groundbreaking in the history of Senegalese music because it was the first commercial recording to feature a traditional female taasukat performing to the modern accompaniment of mbalax, Senegal's quintessential pop genre. The combination of Diop and her backup vocalists with their powerful taasu, along with the driving, complex rhythms of the sabar and tama drums, mixed with key elements of mbalax (such as the syncopated, polyphonic marimba sounds played on the Yamaha DX7 keyboard) was something the Senegalese public had never heard before. But it wasn't only because of the fusion of taasu with mbalax; unlike in other mbalax tunes, the musical arrangements on this cassette are instead peculiarly minimalist and almost trance-like, with static harmonies and melodic figures playing more of an atmospheric role. The cassette became a huge hit, propelling Diop to a new level of superstardom. It could be heard blasting from taxis and from loudspeakers at house parties, weddings and baptisms for years to come. Liital bridged the gap between the more traditional taasu and the modern mbalax sound, thus appealing to all generations of the Senegalese public - and they simply couldn't get enough of it. ! When Aby Ngana Diop died unexpectedly on July 4, 1997, the country mourned her passing, but continued to celebrate her music. Other artists such as Cheikh Lô, Thio Mbaye and Lamine Touré released recordings based on some of Diop's taasu and accompanying drum phrases, paying further tribute to her musical legacy. Although this cassette has caught the attention of some African music aficianados who have stumbled upon it in recent years, it remains largely unknown to the wider world. Hopefully this reelease from Awesome Tapes From Africa will change that.!

Woo - Magic In The Dark

To accompany the reissue of Woo's Into The Heart Of Love, Emotional Rescue is releasing a limited 7" featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in
later form on their CD only, La Luna album. With the original Into The Heart Of Love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from Emotional Rescue.
Therefore, this limited edition 7" includes two of those ommited songs. The wistful English folk duet between Mark Ives and Sue Amor on Make Me Tea and it's sibling on the album, A Little Long Way. Possibly Woo's most straight forward folk song, Make Me Tea is as the title imagines a very particular English poem. Recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. However, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, Magic In The Dark that is worth the admission price alone. Taken from the CD only album, La Luna, the original's short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it's alternate demo form. A different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. The sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. Mark's vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother Clive, before Clarinets duet to a yearning finale. Woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. A one off to cherish

FUMAÇA PRETA's hard hitting, free-wheeling debut LP brings together elements of tropicalia, psychedelic rock, fuzz funk, musique concrete, acid house, radiophonic electronics, hair metal, voodoo and African, Brazilian and Latin rhythms. Beaming down from another planet and sonically stretching across decades, 'FUMAÇA PRETA' will be released on Soundway Records on 29th September.
FUMAÇA PRETA (pronounced Foomassa Pretta - meaning Black Smoke) started as a studio experiment when Alex Figueira, a Portuguese-Venezuelan producer and percussionist, invited some old friends to join him in the tiny analogue studio he built on the back of his house in Amsterdam.
After producing 2 critically acclaimed 45s, Fumaça Preta continued to work in the Barracão Sound Laboratory, swiftly producing their debut album. All musical boundaries collapsed during recording as the band drew upon their vast array of varied influences.
Live, FUMAÇA PRETA becomes a quintet that swerves in and out of endless musical avenues but never loses the rock solid heavy psychedelic groove that drives them.

Hareton Salvanini - Hareton + Meta Ep
  • A1: Km 110

  • B2: Hippie 12

Hareton Salvanini started the group with his brother Ayreton in the 1970s. M.E.T.A were a theatrical movement based in Campinas (in the Sao Paulo State).

M.E.T.A was an acronym of Movimento Evolução De Teatro E Arte; Movement / Evolution / Theatre / Art. It wasn't a traditional music group, with M.E.T.A performing numerous musicals primarily focussing on subjects close to their hearts - liberation, freedom and youth. Their modus operandi was to experiment with different ideas in an attempt to create a new voice that represented their ideals.

Paulo Pugoiese composed the EP with Hareton & Ayerton also composing and writing lyrics. Paulo conducted the Sinfonica Campinas Orchestra and this was

the orchestra of the City Cidade Do Campina. It was that connection that enabled them to be able to afford an entire string section for the tracks. The

group who played on the recording only every played in a studio. They were never a live band.

Shaolin Afronauts - Follow The Path

The driving force of The Shaolin Afronuats is Ross McHenry, the ARIA nominated composer, bandleader, producer and bassist based in Adelaide. Alongside co collaborators Lachlan Ridge and Dylan Marshall, It is their opmbined wide ranging musical tastes, impeccable production and instrumental skills that always result in music that is original, thought provoking, unexpected and quite beautiful.

2011's debut album 'Flight Of The Ancients' was a critical and commercial success story. The follow up 'Quest Under Capricorn' further cemented the bands reputation for forging their own very particular sound - and now in 2014 - as the band prepare to tour Japan & Europe (including 2 prestigious shows at The Glastonbury Festival) Freestyle Records is proud to present the expansive & epic Follow The Path.

Follow The Path is a 21 track, double album that expands upon and delves further into the musical genres that inspire and influence the group - rhythmic and pulsating afrobeat, and the avant-garde/spiritual jazz inspired by artists such as Sun Ra and Mulatu Astatke.

One superb example of how this band execute their musical vocabulary is Ojo Abameta, a percussive & frenetic number, built on a bed of amazing percussion and topped off with some deeply sweet ensemble horns, the end result is reminiscent of African hi life sounds which acts as a curtain raiser for this incredible album. The albums title track 'Follow The Path' uses afrobeat as a template, but with strong funk undercurrents, as the insistent beat underpins the beautiful ensemble horns and bubbling analogue synth sounds to dramatic and hypnotic effect.

In contrast, the second volume emphasises The Shaolin Afronauts more experimental and introspective side. As an example, the three part suite Outside Beyond/Three Ways Back is a genuine musical journey that takes the listener through many musical moods and textures...,this is deep, spiritually rooted music that locates the band almost in a genre of their very own - having such an original and individual approach and sound.

Ella Eyre - If I Go

Ella Eyre

If I Go

M-CD4700601
Polydor Germany
29.08.2014

Diesen Sommer erscheint nun endlich ihre offizielle Debütsingle: If I Go, ein massiver, ausgelassener Song mit viel Sex-Appeal, in dessen Rahmen sie einem Lover die Frage stellt: 'If I go, will you love me when I come back' Ganz ehrlich: Wer würde da schon nein sagen.

Die von Jarred Rogers (Lana Del Rey, Tinie Tempah, Mark Ronson) produzierte Single ist ein klarer Sommerhit-Kandidat: Der Track hat jede Menge Druck, eine Wahnsinns-Hook und ist unbedingt tanzbar.

Tecato--slang for a heroin addict--speaks to the emerging madness that was beginning to bubble in the streets of Nueva York as the economic and social decay that would give birth to Hip-Hop in a few years began its reign.

The record embodies the mixture of chaos and beauty that was experienced in the streets as first generation Nuyoricans were merging the rhythms and realities of their Island-born parents with the energy and sounds of New York City. The music of this spectacular soundtrack, which was recorded in one take, mixes Guaguanco, Soul, Psychedelic Rock and Santeria.

Imagine standing on the corner of 116th and Lexington in the middle of July, while from every window there is a different sound blasting. That is what Carlos Ramos y su Orquesta Fuego sounds and feels like.

Sociedad Records is honored to release "Candelo" and "Lightning & Flash" from this incredible LP as its inaugural release. Remastered and released as a double-sided single for the first time, these two diverse & heavy sounds are an automatic collector's piece.

Interpol - El Pintor

Interpol

El Pintor

05.09.2014

Jazzanova Feat. Paul Randolph - Now There Is We

Since its foundation in 1997 Jazzanova always had a big following in Japan. And theintercultural exchange with the Japanese DJ scene has been brisk ever since. However, now for the very first time a remix 12inch jam-packed with works by artists from the land of the rising sun.In collaboration with Especial Records (Kyoto Massive member Yoshihiro Okino's label) four remixes for 'Now There Is We', Jazzanova's last single, had been commissioned. Starting things off is Kuniyuki Takahashi, producer and sound designer from Sapporo. The Future Jazz apostle bends and breaks - Now There Is We' until he puts down an impelling jazz piano accompanied track which would even bring tears to the late Frankie Knuckle's eyes.A completely different approach is applied by Mano Arriba (Spanish for - Hands up!'): Under his direction the song mutates to become a carnival-compliant salsa rhythm. Absolutely striking!

The Jazz Epistles - Verse 1+
  • A1: Blues For Hughie
  • A2: Delilah
  • A3: Old Devil Moon
  • A4: Cosmic Ray
  • B1: Vari-Oo-Voom
  • B2: Scullery Dept
  • B3: Carols Drive
  • B4: Gafsa

The Jazz Epistles were not only South Africa's first bebop band, but were also, rumour has it, the first black South African group to release an album. Very few copies of that album 'Jazz Epistle Verse 1' were made in 1960 (issued on the Continental Label), and even fewer survive today. At the time members of the band were very active in the burgeoning South African jazz scene and had also made several recordings for John Mehegan, a self-taught white American jazz pianist and tutor who toured South Africa that same year. Mehegan soon found himself in trouble with the South African authorities for fraternizing with black musicians.

The Jazz Epistles broke up soon after the Verse 1 recordings, with all members being offered work touring Europe with the hit African jazz musical 'King Kong', along with the Manhattan Brothers and vocalist Miriam Makeba.

This tour came at a time when Sophiatown, the black suburb of white Johannesburg where the band lived and played, was about to be demolished. This, along with The Sharpeville Massacre marked the beginnings of forced segregation, violence, repression and a most turbulent time in their country - a time when African arts would not be tolerated.

Thankfully, the touring members of the Jazz Epistles found freedom, enlightenment, appreciation and the guidance of European musicians to further their musical careers. So in some ways, South African jazz flourished for the next few decades, but only in other countries.

Listening now to these recordings we hear that the band's early mix of African and American jazz ideas, rhythms and swingin' tempos make their sound both unique and prescient, and can now be appreciated as a cornerstone and most important landmark in South African sounds.

This unique vinyl release brings together selections from the classic Verse 1 album as well as other rare cues by members of the band, recorded for Mehegan in those lively 1959/ 60 jazz sessions. Of particular note on this release is the sublime track Gafsa, summed up on its original release like so: 'Another piano solo from Dollar Brand. It tells of a man who was madly in love with a wonderful woman. She dies, but her vision comes to him as he walks through the streets of Cape Town on a misty night.'

Pierre Antoine - Kalabuley Woman

Hot Casa Records is deeply honored to reissue one of the best Afrobeat albums in history, hiding two obscure and incredible tracks! Kalabuley Woman was composed by Pierre Antoine, an Ivorian artist supported by a 15 band members, including legendary Sammy Cropper on guitar, and Lola Everett on vocals. This fantastic album was recorded in Accra (Ghana) in 1977 and produced in Ivory Coast by the famous label Papa
Disco. Ahui Ngoran Marcel aKa Pierre Antoine was born in 1951 in Aboisso, a city situated at 117 km from Abidjan, in the south-east part of Ivory Coast, close from the Ghanaian border. His name Pierre Antoine is a direct tribute to the French artist 'Antoine', as he loved to wear long hair and cool style jacket.
In 1977, he settled down in Ghana where he discovered the most influential and prolific Afro-Soul scene, and started to work with Pat Thomas, his wife Lolla Everett, and the famous guitar player Sammy Cropper. During this period we can hear the musical evolution of the artist, while he got really close from
the Afrobeat arrangement and the Panafrican scene. The musical arrangements of the album are amazing and unique, including a hypnotic piano and a fantastic horns section. A must have, simply a classic Afro-Soul album.

Kalbata & Mixmonster - Congo Beat The Drum

The world of roots reggae & dancehall has been fully awoken to the fantastic analogue sounds of Kalbata & Mixmonsters' music - and even Rob Da Bank, Robert Elms, & Toddla T and The Wire magazine have supported and enthusiastically raved about their brand new yet wonderfully old school music.

And now - in time for summer festivals and carnivals, the floor shaking, speaker rattling track Congo Beat The Drum featuring Major Mackerel gets the 12 inch single treatment. The pounding drums and the larynx busting vocal performance from the Jamaican veteran is an unstoppable, unforgettable and frankly mesmerising experience!

Released alongside the original (and an instrumental version of stand out album track Out Of Road) is an amazing remix by Kahn - the Bristol based producer, renowned dubstepper, remixer, member of the Sureskank Collective - who with this remix displays his mastery of blending all kinds of styles, and injects his remix with some of his favourite influences - including Middle Eastern music scales - which ensures his reworking of Congo Beat The Drum is fresh, original and inspiring.

This single will be one of the sound system hits of summer 2014!

Khun Narin - Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band

LP packaged with download card and 12 x 12 inch full cover sticker; CD comes in a digipack with a clear inner tray

It all started over a year ago with the caption 'MINDBLOWING PSYCHEDELIA FROM THAILAND' — the Youtube video that accompanied this headline on the Dangerous Minds website was exactly that. Here was a group of Thai musicians being filmed parading through a remote village hundreds of miles away from Bangkok playing some of the heaviest Psych known to mankind out of a crazy homemade soundsystem.

Six months after that first encounter with Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band, a Los Angeles music producer named Josh Marcy used Facebook and interpreters at his local Thai restaurant to get in contact with the band and inquire whether they'd be interested in having him travel to their town to record their music for a global audience. At first the band was naturally suspicious, but through subsequent interactions the group's leader and namesake Khun Narin (also known simply as 'Rin') warmed to the idea of having Marcy come visit.

Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band's membership is always in rotation and spans several generations, from high school kids to men well into their 60s. A standard engagement has the band setting up at the hosting household during the morning rituals, playing several low-key sets from the comfort of plastic lawn chairs occasionally working in a cover version of a foreign classic while the beer and whiskey flow freely.

- Recording of a Thai marching band playing a traditional three-stringed lute and using effects pedals, distortion and digital delay, with Fender pickups installed into the lutes' hardwood bodies
- Recommended for fans of: William Onyeabor, Ravi Shankar, Os Mutantes, Jimi Hendrix, Mulatu Astatke, Buena Vista Social Club, Ry Cooder
- Debut release from a band whose music is described by Dangerous Minds as "indescribably beautiful psychedelia"
- Videos of Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band have been featured in The Wire, the blog of globally renowned experimental radio station WFMU, and the popular technology and culture website Boing Boing
Teaser videos to accompany release
- Combines heavy psychedelia with rock and electrically modified traditional instruments
