"To make music using instrument-playing robots fascinates me. People have often assumed that for music to be emotionally powerful it has to come directly from a human hand, whereas i disagree with that, and enjoy proving these people wrong. This project is an excellent way of exploring that area more."

Ray Lugo's mind is very fertile, and he's been rather prolific over the last decade, putting out a variety of groovy sounds ranging from organic to electronic, afrobeat to soul, Latin to Brazilian and many different sorts of mashup/fusions in between. But, just because he is creatively fecund doesn't mean the quality suffers - each album is hand-crafted and Ray takes his time to shape and mold it to just the right proportions.


So when Ray told me he had some new music he was working on, I didn't know what to expect, but I knew it was going to be sabroso, whatever the ingredients. Turned out it was his second Latin soul record with the Boogaloo Destroyers, and destroy the dance floor is just what they will do when you put this record on the Hi-Fi. The title of the album translates loosely as "how groovy!" and it's a very apt one. The Boogaloo Destroyers' sound is inspired by the warmth, diversity, and youthful spirit of classic New York Latin Boogaloo of the 1960s, yet at the same time, as composer and lead vocalist, Ray feels he is bringing some of his afrobeat sensibilities and vocal personality to the proceedings, to make it fresh for today's audiences. He also told me he feels the Boogaloo Destroyers serve the dual purpose of emphasizing his pride in being Latino as well as helping to build a musical bridge for people from around to world to come together and learn a little bit about each other, and with this sophomore release, he's gonna do just that. When I asked him to talk about the songs, he offered some entertaining insights:

'Swim Down Low' the title fell out of the mouth of Matt Bordin as we sat at the recording desk. 'Or something like this' he said waving his hand in the air.

Delaney Davidson speaks of the un and quick way they recorded his 5th Solo Album. Recorded onto the fantastic tape machine that has put Outside Inside studios on the European map, Davidson has worked closely with Matt Bordin and Davide Zolli from Mojomatics on these songs he collected over his latest travels. They have polished and refined the material to a clear cut gem.

Swim Down Low combines his classical European take on folk with a Lo Fi Glam sensibility, building songs into driving AM radio anthems wasted caberet theatre visions and swamp hop dance.

Combining the Magic of Venice, the ghost of Lou Reed, Giant monster fish, Poisoned Love, Life is a dog, Love is a dog.. apocalypse warnings, a soldiers Lament, the Jailors last friend, Farewell songs to dead ones... and a trip upriver to a local dance hall...Recorded in a hard week of down time on tour... the album features some classic Davidson originals aswell as some co-written songs with desert flower Victoria Williams, Fabio Pozzorini of Pussy Warmers, Alabamas unbelieveable James Hall, the great Eric Mcfadden, and Swiss Cajun legends Mama Rosin.

Charles-Eric Charrier is a French bassist and pianist mining the remote seams of music between post-classical, jazz, acoustic blues and ambient. Hidden or distant those seams may be, but all the richer for those who take the time to seek them out. Echoes of innovative artists like Earth, Anouar Brahem, Bohren und der Club of Gore, Chet Baker or even Malian musicians such as Ali Farka Toure and Tinariwen sometimes appear on the horizon, only to disappear at the next turn. Charrier's music as band-leader on 'Petite Soeur', his first release for Gizeh Records, is endlessly yearning and searching, pushing and pulling at the basic fabric of bass, piano, drums and guitar.

Probably the best Brazil project in the world! Featuring an all-star line-up of the label's closest friends, (as well as some new faces) Friends From Rio is a fresh take on our original idea of recording tunes from Brazil for the dance floors of London.

It was one of the first projects the label endeavoured upon way back in 1994 and after 20 years, Far Out is back with this new release of varied, yet consistently danceable Bossa grooves, Brazil funk and scorching batucadas. It's just the kind of music that has defined the label over its two-decade history, which makes it the perfect way to mark 20 years of Far Out Recordings!

The CD, LP and digital download will be available from 19th May 2014.

In keeping with the very ethos of Far Out, The Friends From Rio Project cements the bonds originally welded by a young Joe Davis, when he set off to Rio, in search of the mysterious sounds of Brazil. Coming from the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro, the album features some of the most accomplished legends of Rio's musical underground, including Alex Malheiros, Hyldon, Aleh, Robertinho Silva, Sabrina Malheiros and a host of other Far Out favourites.



Consisting of all original material (with the exception of a blistering version of Jorge Ben's timeless 'Mas Que Nada'), this is a reunion of old friends and that's exactly how it sounds, with celebratory whoops and whistles littering the album, it really does sound like a party. Every track is in some way reminiscent of the kind of music Joe Davis and friends were playing on the underground club scene in London, back at the time of the first Rio Project. While principally a Brazilian record, lofty disco synths and funk basslines take tracks 'So Resta A Porta','Veneno' and 'Fogo No Chao' beneath the lights of a spinning mirror ball, while samba batucadas and fiery brass sections keep 'Casino Bangu' and Hyldon and Alex Malheiros' fantastically funky 'Leite De Pedra', decidedly under the Rio sun. The album also explores deeper territory with 'Batucada Bidu' providing an instrumental stint of intense, driven samba percussion, while Robertinho Silva's solo closing track 'Japa' is deep and intriguing Brazilian jazz music at its finest.



'We've always tried to keep the music dance-floor orientated, but it's sometimes hard to get musicians to play in the same style and with the same feel as they perhaps had in days gone by. Over the last 20 years, our relationships with some of these legends has really developed through sharing musical ideas, and this understanding really comes out in this Rio Project, enabling us to get exactly the results we wanted while recording the album. It was a real team effort, Daniel Maunick, Alex Malheiros and I; we were all on the same page, ensuring that the groove was imbedded in the music first and foremost.' - Joe Davis



Nostalgia balanced with vitality is inherent throughout, punctuated by the artwork, which is based on the bottle cap of the 60s/70s Brahma Guarana. Although it's one of the poorest nations on the planet in terms of the UN's Human Development Index, Niger has one of the most diverse and richly ornamented cultures on the African continent. The country's first station, Radio Niger, went on the air in 1958 and was renamed Voix du Sahel in 1974. In 1979, the government established the Broadcasting Corporation of Niger State (BCNS). Today, Radio Niger is where the country's range of ethnicities, with their disparate customs of language and music, combine to create an astonishingly complex sonic patchwork: Bawdy, drunken sages and storytellers wandering into the studio; local shout-outs to girlfriends and family members; comedy skits juxtaposed with Zarma/Songhai mollo (a regional stringed instrument) and Denke-denke mollo from neighboring Burkina Faso dissolving into Tuareg guitar blues trance. News snippets from RFI and the BBC vie for supremacy with Hausa women's ensembles; Malian Kora collides with Zarma Koranic transmissions; lo-fi cassettes from the marketplace bump up against animist Bori folk dirges and the vapid autotune stylings of modern Nigerian pop. DJs bring an improvisational element to local radio: singing along with tracks live on air; creating live multichannel compositions and avant-collage cut-ups; and generally preserving the human element that has long since disappeared from corporate Western radio. In short, Radio Niger is outlaw radio, broadcast with freedom and spontaneity, and bathed in an arid fidelity that reveals the region's character and landscape. "Waiting For the One" is the third and brand new effort for Sugarpie and the Candymen. This album represents a further evolution in the sound and in the musical direction of the band. The 'Swing' trademark it's always there but the spectrum broadens with new colours,styles and inspirations : the marching bands of New Orleans, Cuban sound, Reggae, Nu Jazz, Rhythm and Blues of early 50's, all of these Sounds are here, and... why not Pop as well !. The Record is equally made up by originals Songs and covers , as we have seen in their previous work "Swing'n'Roll ," but here the tracking list is shuffled differently to show that there are two sides of the same coin. The original tracks range from the traditional swing of "Blue About Love " to the French flavors of "Madness in the Rain" from the Beatles pop sound of "Lil " to the battered and Waits (Tom) sounding "Dusty", from the progressive fairy tale of "QMV" to the country manouche of " Warchild " ... While amongst he covers we find a number of hits of the last decade ("Single Ladies" by Beyonce sounds like it's straight out of a Dr. John Album !, while "Toxic" by Britney Spears winks at Buena Vista Social Club. Catchy Hits of the '80s like "Bad" has kept the original dance beat with a bit of gypsy flavor, "Material Girl" arrangement is inspired by Louis Jordan and 50's Jump Blues", Hard Rock milestones like "Highway Star" by Deep Purple has received the "Count Basie" treatment, but the most remarkable accomplishments of the Album must go to the two Pop Symphonies, the evergreen and worlwide Hits, massively known that go by the names of : "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Good vibrations" . In most of the tracks the Band has had the pleasure to have special guests on them : a horn section with Gianni Satta on trumpet, Rudy Migliardi on trombone and tuba and Gregory Agid hailing New Orleans on clarinet and sax. Daniel Richiedei is on violin and Giovanni Colombo on the piano, the accordion played by Fausto Beccalossi and the percussions by Riccardo Marenghi. The same Candymen themselves, quite often switch instruments quite freely. these to follow were quite in use on this Recording (dobro, banjo, piano, organ, mandolin, glockenspiel, kazoo and various percussions ... ).

"In 2008 I came across a box of 7' tapes at an estate sale in Altadena. The woman there said that they had belonged to her father and were 'field recordings' of a turn-of-the century orchestra. It took me maybe another year to actually load them up and transfer them to the computer. When I did, what I found was an incredible documentation of indigenous folkloric music that was meticulously recorded and then later transfered to 2-track tape sometime in the 1960's. The tapes were labeled 'Contact Field Orchestra'-- a collection of field recordings that seem to date from sometime around the turn of the 20th century (possibly a little earlier).

After transferring the tapes and cleaning them up as best I could, I discovered that due to the frequency range, they must have been recorded largely with hand-made piezo transducers of some sort. Some of the tapes were partially destroyed, so I found that I had to re-play or play over the songs as best I could to fill-in and augment the original ideas. I tried to stay as true to the original recordings as much as possible. I'll admit I took some liberties with the EQ (perhaps too much...) and where applicable added a small amount of delay and reverb to accent the track. (Okay, and maybe a few electric guitars...sue me.)

The result, I think, is an amazing collection of esoteric folk recordings of a mysterious band of San Gabriel miners turned musicians. Apparently having given-up after the gold boom, these folks stayed in what would later become Upper Mallard Canyon in Altadena -- living in the old Dawn's Mine shaft, and crafting their own instruments from discarded mining equipment and whatever small guitars and banjos they had brought with them.

The sound this orchestra created is like something out of a Jim Jarmusch film, and reminds me of an old Library of Congress or Folkways recording. The music itself is full of opposites -- hypnotizing and odd; meditative and jarring. It's strangely familiar, but also distantly unrecognizable. Some songs are more minimalist in their approach, building up a rhythm with mbiras and percussion, while others seem to have much more harmony and tonal structure and almost Blues/Country feel. Either way, they had me hooked from the first bar, and I find myself returning to it again and again, irregardless of my heavy-handed noodling...

Hailing from New York during the mid 1970s, Tony Aiken and Future 2000 was a musical group whose funky brand of R&B-meets-dance featured a distinct sound reminiscent of a combination of Carribbean music and Afrobeat. Their strong arrangements, pulsating beats, and unique orchestrations made them underground darlings for much of the mid-70s. Their Kimsha Records release Unity: Sing It, Shout It was a joyous, booty-shaking pile of East Coast disco at its most raw. Aiken has since gone on to work with artists such as Dennis Brown, Frankie Paul, Chosen Few, and many more, but the original Unity album has largely been forgotten to the sands of history...until now! Terrific, headlong, in-your-face, dense, hypnotic guitar-music from Niamey, the capital of Niger, lashing together Tuareg blues, the Songhai of Malian griots, and Hausa percussion, amongst other influences. Intensely refreshing and warmly recommended. 'Kaani' means uplifting, happy.

Tal National is a band from Niamey, the capital city of Niger, West Africa's largest nation (and one of the world's poorest). Although they are hugely popular in their homeland where their music is heavily featured on Niger national TV, they can still be found selling their CDs on roundabouts in Niamey, since the country has no distribution system. Each year they do national tours, travelling 18,000 kilometres throughout Niger, performing shows in over forty cities.
In their joyously hypnotic, highly unique contribution to West African guitar music can be heard the history of Niger as a cultural crossroads along ancient trade routes. Collected within the borders of the former French colony can be found Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, and Tuareg populations, all of whom are represented in the musicians of Tal National. These different ethnic groups tie Niger closely to the peoples of its more powerful neighbours Nigeria, Mali, Algeria, and Libya. In the band's 'tradi-modern' music the listener can hear strong reverberations of the rolling 12/8 rhythms in the Hausa's Fuji percussion, the pensive aridity of the Tuareg's assouf or 'desert blues', and the exquisite 'griot guitar' of Mali's Songhai. These African roots sounds are all delivered with virtuoso precision and a driving, energetic immediacy that typifies the sound of nightlife in a modern African city.

Introducing... Captain Rugged Five years after Nigerian Wood, Keziah Jones is back with a personal and political project, wearing the outfit of an Afro superhero,"Captain Rugged", his quirky and socially committed double. His music is Blufunk as but with an infusion of a punk-funk attitude crossed with yoruba rhythms. Recorded between London and Paris, mixed in New York, the album captain rugged has a psychedelic quality that he sums-up with a rather engaging: 'George Clinton sharing a joint with Fela".

Super Djata is one of boldest and most exciting orchestras in the history of African modern music, if not one of Africa's greatest and most unsung ensembles.
Led by the late great Zani Diabaté, Super Djata Band de Bamako stands proud as one of West Africa's fiercest orchestras, with only a handful of releases and many tremendous gigs given over the last forty years. Super Djata may be indeed one of the boldest and most exciting orchestras in the history of African modern music, if not one of Africa's greatest and most unsung ensembles.

Born in 1947 in the Sikasso region, Zani belongs to one of Mali's most famous griot families. As a child he learnt how to play the bolon, a string instrument with a bass sound, and the balafon, before learning how to dance. As a sixteen year old, he joined the Ballet National du Mali, an official dance ensemble. In the same vein as the Ensemble Instrumental du Mali, Ballet National du Mali served Modibo Keita's cultural authenticity policy in the 1960s.

Zani was also taught how to play percussion by legendary Voltaic musician Amadou Ballaké in the mid-1960s. During his time at the Ballet National du Mali, he befriends fellow musician and dancer Daouda 'Flani' Sangaré. Flani introduced him to his very close friend Alou Fané. Both of them came from the same region as Zani, sharing some of the same cultural references.

As a trio, they joined forces together in order to set up the Harmonica Jazz with Zani playing the harmonica. They moved on to the name Ganoua Band, where Zani played the guitar, Alou and Flani sang and played the kamalen ngoni while another Ballet friend, Maré Sanogo, played the djembé and other percussions. This small local outfit expanded with the arrival of three other musicians from the Ballet National du Mali.
They then set up the Djata Band name in order to start one of Mali's first private orchestras.

Thanks to their leader's experience, the Djata Band quickly rose to fame within the Bamako region. Despite the lack of official support, Djata Band started to record their compositions under the aegis of expert engineer Boubacar Traoré at Radio Mali's tiny recording studio. By the end of the 1970s, the band's repertoire was already very large and diverse. Their first album was released through the Discorama record label in Abidjan. Like several other Malian artists of the early 1980s, Super Djata's only outlet for their material lay in some Ivorian record company.

This album was released circa 1982 on the Musique Mondiale label in Abidjan.
Opening the record, 'Yacouba' is a tribute to a great bambara dancer from Ballet National du Mali who was murdered in Dakar in 1973. Sober and heartfelt, Zani's guitar playing is hypnotic while Flani mourns their late friend, enhanced by eerie background vocals. Other names such as Sory Kandia Kouyaté or Bembeya Jazz's singer Demba Cambara who happened to die in Dakar the same year as Yacouba passed away are featured in the second part of the song, names which are quoted with great emotion. On stage, the whole band would kneel down at a point when playing this tribute song to the great ones who had passed away

A Portuguese civil servant, entrepreneur and Angolan music fan named Luis Montês self-designed 'Kutonocas', Sunday afternoon live music festivals started in Luanda in 1961 and is the basis on which this great compilation is built.



This compilation is a dedication to the short lived recording industry in Angola, a brief moment of history between 1969 and 1978 in which three recording companies produced approximately 800 records, mostly singles. They are rare jewels, each song with a significant story and feel behind it. You will hear exciting music blazed with the anticipation of emancipation, tracks fuelled with a sense of unity, community, importance and immediacy.This addictive, outlawed music from Angola shakes and grooves with the smoothness of staccato machine gun fire.



The intimacy of those participating in this musical revolution meant they playfully and professionally wanted to trump each other's style due to the limited recording and performing opportunities. The optimism of Independence can be heard in these recordings; a common goal between the audience and musicians.



The characteristically generous liner notes feature 44 pages acquired in coordination with the National Library of Luanda and the art magazine 'Note E Dia'and Analog Africa head honcho Samy Ben Redjeb has managed to collect newspaper clips, extremely rare pictures of the bands on stage and printed interviews from the 70s.

This album is a compilation of the musical score for the well-known play 'Faust I & II' by
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It was composed by Albrecht Ziepert and comissioned by
director Mark Zurmühle for a "Faust" production of the "Deutsche Theater Göttingen" in 20
It is the result of intense collaboration between Zurmüle and his cast, Ziepert, and the other
musicians he involved. The album also acts as a best-of, which documents the ever changing
nature of the production during the making and staging of it while the score was performed
live each night. The music is inspired by various contemporary genres - especially electronic
music - as well as classical instrumentations.
Albrecht Ziepert is a german musician and composer best known as member of the up-and-
coming band, "Pentatones". Since 1999 he has been composing for various theatre
productions, films and other audiovisual & modern dance projects. In 2010 he received an
award at the Novara Cine Festival in Mailand for his film music of 'Stiller See', a movie
directed by Lena Liberta. During 2011 he became the musical director for various projects at
the Deutsche Theater Göttingen and in 2012 he arranged his first commissioned piece of the
renowned MDR Sinfonieorchester.

Wonderwheel Recordings is very proud to present a collaboration between the legendary Sammy Ayala (Rafael Cortijo y su Combo, Ismael Rivera), Nickodemus, the Candela Allstars (Puerto Rico) & the Whiskey Barons. Recorded right before the passing of the late, great Sammy - Nickodemus was recording ideas in the studio with the 77 year old Latin music legend after being inspired in Colombia to make a universal song inspired by Salsa & people it inspired in the dance. Sammy instantly gravitated towards the tune and wrote the lyrics before even hitting the studio. Horns and bass were recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela Allstars (who were notably the players on Nickodemus and Quantic's "Mi Swing Es Tropical", which famously ran as an iPod advert on television), and the work in progress was passed on to the Whiskey Barons (who have notably done a series of remixes for Fania and have a brand new album coming out on Ubiquity Records this year), who stretched it out with a steady reggae influenced dancefloor stomper with Sammy's vocals "Baila la salsa, bail a tu manera" holding down the vibes throughout. Also included on the 7" is the instrumental.

The beat & melody wizard Sun Glitters, out from Luxembourg, has passed, after the release of the acclaimed 'Everything Could Be Fine', to be known as the creator of glitterwave as a genre. Until then, each of the genres that were assigned didn't described his sound on fullness. Besides the immense material he has produced, he has been a prolific musician remixing other artists, being impossible to forget the remix he did for the first release of Purity Ring.

His adventure mate for this Ep is one of the most talented artists in the spectrum of the lo-fi bedroom folk, although Steffaloo's career is not restricted to this style. Much of today's most exciting electronic owes to her an irreproachable aesthetics and beauty set of vocalizations.

In the fall of 2012 the collaboration with IRMA records begins, which leads to the release of their first album titled "Velvet Bossa": 12 intense rearranged Covers that synthesize the artistic project of the Band and highlight the musical versatility of Chic Couture, ranging between different genres until they manage to create their own characteristic sound. The album, entrusted to the Artistic Production of Riccardo Rinaldi (Aerosmith, Sud Sound System) relies on the participation of nationally known musicians: among them, the Internationally know trumpet player Massimo Greek (Zucchero "Sugar" Fornaciari, Neffa) and the excellent piano player Alessandro Garofalo (Sud Sound System).

Their super-rare legendary Latin funk release originally came out on ESP in 1969/1970. Although the title says Percussion Group, this is actually a Latin soul group led by master conga player Montego Joe as part of the Harlem Youth program of the 60's. (Alto legend Jackie McLean worked with the group at one point earlier). A fantastic raw mix of funky bass, heavy drums, burning horn lines and soulful vocals, this is quite simply one of the great Latin releases of all-time. Includes the monster tracks "Welcome to the Party," "Feed Me Good," and "Oua-Train."
