Super limited vinyl press with CD insert

LOrchestre Kanaga De Mopti is one of the best West African modern orchestras which originated from a wide range of state funding. In 1977 the Malian government-owned label Mali Kunkan released a series of LPs including this holy grail of Malian music, one of the most rare and sought after records from Mali, going for over $400 (US) on ebay. Finally this timeless classic is officially available again including fully restored artwork and audio, plus in-depth liner notes about Mali and LOrchestre Kanaga De Mopti.

In the 1960s, during the First Republic of Mali, modern orchestras were encouraged and promoted by Modibo Keitas government. Starting in 1960, Bani Jazz became the city and regions main orchestra be-fore the name changed to the Orchestre Rgional de Mopti in the wake of Malis Second Republic in 1969. At the end of 1970, the band published its first album under the name Orchestre Rgional de Mopti. This record clearly helped to define Moptis vibrant cultural heritage under the aegis of bandleader Sory Bamba. Trumpet player, flautist, traveller and songwriter, Bamba already had a strong musical experience when he took over the orchestra in 1969.

Around 1976, the Mopti orchestra became the Kanaga De Mopti, and in July of that year, after months of intense musical and cultural research in Malis capital, the orchestra visited the Radio Mali recording stu-dio in order to document its new musical evolution. Six of these songs were featured on the only album of Kanaga De Mopti released in 1977 courtesy of Mali Kunkan, an ad hoc label originating from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Art and Culture. Stuck into the past but looking towards the future with its incredible mix of traditional and modern instruments, the Kanaga instantly touches and defines the highest levels of African music classicism.

The second release from the Teranga Beat label is a live mash of psychedelia and moog madness from Gambian band Guelewar. Formerly known as The Alligators, a group led by Bai Janha, a leading light on the Gambian music scene, the band became Guelewar when Janha was joined by Laye N'Gom. Guelewar fused the Bougaraboo and Saourouba sounds with soul and funk, with a nod towards Gambian traditional singer Moussa N'Gom. Guelewar was the biggest band on the Sene-Gambian music scene. This is their last recording. live at the Canari Club de Kaolack in Senegal in 1982.

Double album is house in a gatefold sleeve, the CD comes with a 16 page booklet, with biographical detail and photographs.

REPRESSED !!
Jealousy is the first of the 3 solo albums by Tony Allen produced by Fela Kuti. In 1975 Tony Allen, the band-leader of Afrika 70, got an opportunity to rehearse his compositions together with rest of the Afrika 70. This ended up in his first record which was initially released on the private imprint Soundworkshop Records. Jealousy is according to many still the highlight of his 4 solo-albums featuring 2 afro-beat gems 'Jealousy' and 'Hustler'. Part of the Tony Allen reissue series on Kindred Spirits, featuring remastered versions and original restored artwork. A must for afro-beat fans around the globe.

One of the most sought after Arabic disco records finally see's a long awaited re-release, this 12" was only issued in seriously limited quantities on the tiny Stip records label out of France in 1976. Sought for the chuggy exotic rhythms of the B side 'El Fen' at long last this eastern influenced disco masterpiece is available to those who don't happen to have a spare £500!!

Aït Meslayene was a Kabyle traditional singer who moved to Paris to try his luck. He was driven by an Algerian manager who pushed him to make a "disco" album, a new trend at that time. The recording found place in a studio near Paris, with an American drummer from the funk group "Ice".

Latin music for all dancefloors : salsa , bachata , merengue , reggaeton ... Great summer compilation with Ciclon Cubano, Salsoul Project, Katy Mendez, El Caiman...

Mid to late 70's Afro funk from the Ivory Coast, the kind of exotic brew that crate diggers go crazy for. There are strong links to James Brown in some of the vocal exclamations, Doumbia's rapping, spitting, wailing and spoken word over repetitive ultra funky bass grooves and his Afro rhythms with the occasional stabs of sax, a rough, ready lumbering funk that has to be heard to be believed. Its raw haphazard nature and aged production quality only adding to its mystique and charm, such as on the 10 minute plus opus title track Keleya
