Hilary Hahn & Hauschka - Silfra

Jungle By Night - Hidden 2x12"

the evolution of afrobeat - TONY ALLEN Jungle By Night drops their first full studio album on Kindred Spirits.
'Hidden' is the first full studio album from this group of dutch lads, who retain their youthful exuberance and innocent energy, and delve deeper into their own sound. Moving slightly away from the afro-beat blueprint that characterized last year's self-titled debut LP, the nine-piece have added Gamelan tones and studio effects to their afro-funk template, as well as exploring other parts of Africa like Mali's desert soul and djembe rhythms from Senegal. After two years of playing, and having performed over 80 gigs last year, the group have settled in their own rhythm, and 'Hidden' sees them trying out new ideas and forms.
Still keeping the unit strictly instrumental, one strength of Jungle By Night is their innate sense of democracy - the quality control of the hive mind. Tracks are jammed out and developed from the rehearsal room to the stage, keeping the audience in mind all the time. 'Hidden' feels very much like a live record, in the vein of classic jazz albums for example, while at the same time utilizing all the digital options that todays recording techniques have to offer.
The album opener 'Rangda' marks this new improved version of the band, using selected pieces of Gamelan. 'Two of our band members, their families are from Indonesia, and their houses are loaded with gamelan instruments. But the Gamelan tunings have little to do with western tunings. It just sounds eerie, hypnotic and mysterious,' said the band. 'Rangda' nods to the spirit of early Tortoise and mid-90's MoWax, and while Jungle By Night know how to stick to what they do best, they're partial to the odd experimental excursion too.
The album is laid out by a group who clearly understand live dynamics, building the tension of the first half of the LP with the tight riffs of 'Togetherness', the mix of west-coast organ and plaintive horns of '2 Days Before 2012' and 'Gallowstreet 34', which could easily soundtrack the 70's edition of GTA Addis Ababa. Mid-way through the album also points to an interesting path, the drum-less ambience of 'Night Fight', a duel of thumb pianos and slide guitar, awash with delays and reverbs, evoking fireflies and glow worms amid the nocturnal jungle creatures.
In the second half, tracks like 'Ethiopino', 'The Past Is History' and 'Marsvin' represent what Jungle By Night do best - taut, multi-layered grooves that are perfect for dancing to, or any other nocturnal activity you like to indulge in. One thing the boys know how to do is find the pocket and lock it, playing around with time signatures while keeping it dynamic. Perhaps the album's surprise gem is 'Ghettos Of The Mind', a languid, Tuareg-inspired roller where you can almost hear the wind whistling across the desert in the background. Producer Wiboud Burkens (Leon Ware, Michael Franti, Carleen Anderson, N'Dambi) has certainly helped craft the complex JBN dynamics into a coherent shape, which has allowed the band to play and experiment without having to worry about the final sound.
Hidden demonstrates natural talent and sensibility, but there's something more at work. While those outside the bubble will try to pinpoint or uncover the band's appeal and what makes them tick, somewhere between the many layers of sounds and rhythm, between the audience and the players, lies a connection that can't really be explained. Jungle By Night know better than to shine too bright a light on it.

Los Fulanos - Y Si Esto Se Acaba Que Siga El 12" + 7"

For a while now, going to see Los Fulanos has been one of the best things you could do in Barcelona (or anywhere else). Los Fulanos have gotten back that riffraff (dissolute) vibe of a pre-Olympics Barcelona. Their concerts are a party where Afro-Latin rhythms come together with a thousand other things, above all, Soul.

The Booma Rockers - Soul Food / Booma Woman

The Booma Rockers were a London house-band put together by a young producer and songwriter from Guyana, Terry Nelson aka Omar Farouk. Nelson released approximately thirty 45s on his labels Halagala, Booma and Rude Boy in the late 1960 and early 1970s before returning home to Guyana to start a successful and well loved TV station.

The majority of the records were of the ska and rocksteady persuasion but one or two stick out as being slightly different.

'Soul Food', a super weighty instrumental soul / blues / funk b-side was released in 1969/70 on Rude Boy Records featuring amongst others Ghanaian saxophonist and vocalist Teddy Osei (who went on to form the Afro rock band Osibisa). 'Booma Woman' was also a B-side in a more reggae-funk style released possibly a year later featuring vocalist Jean Manix.

Both have been out of print ever since and are re-released with the Nelson families' full permission.

Nelson was a very popular and well-loved figure in Guyanese society and many of his songs have become nationalist and political songs that have become part of the national psyche.

The 7' vinyl is limited to 1000 copies and comes with a free MP3 download of the release.

FRIJSFO
14.03.2012

Atki2 has long been performing his unique strain of dancehall, bashment, dubstep, and jungle, yet this is the first time he has released this style on its historical format of choice, 7-inch vinyl. Having co-promoted the Ruffneck Diskotek club night (a strong factor in Bristol's development as one of the globe's most exciting hubs for dubstep and bass music) for nearly a decade with Dub Boy and other local cohorts, he is deservedly a much-loved and respected member of Bristol's music scene. See his many releases on the city's top labels such as Punch Drunk, Idle Hands, and Immerse, as well as further afield imprints like Shadetek and Actress' Werk Discs, for whom he first recorded way back in 2005. With long-term partner Hanuman, Atki2 also helms Steakhouse Records, and the duo have been releasing bass-soaked music under the name Monkeysteak for several years. Solo recordings as Atki2 are rare, but these freshest fruits have a wonderful cockeyed dancehall characteristic to them, recalling the 1990s era heavily electronic styles of labels such as Fashion, Steely & Clevie, or Taxi, emitting twisted and often weird electronics, but all within a dagger inducing locked groove. These tracks have support from DJs and labels across the planet such as Dub Boy, Cardopusher, Ekoplekz, Oslek, Murderbot, Mr Gasparov, Idle Hands, and Iberian Records to name a few. Strictly limited to 300 copies inna murderation formation.

SOUNDWAY RECORDS
13.03.2012

Soundway present 3 new African edits covering a variety of styles. Kicking off on the A side we have a chunky, bass-heavy slice of dancefloor highlife from 1975, boiled down from over thirty minutes to a far more dancefloor-friendly five by Frankie Francis (Sofrito) and label founder Miles Cleret (aka Hide and Smile). This dates from just before Mr. Frimpong became a household name in Ghana with his huge hit Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'Awu.

The flip starts off with a thunderous un-released, un-finished, un-named forgotten track from Ghana's dance band kings of the 60s and 70s: The Uhuru Dance Band. This tape simply had the word 'Uhuru' scrawled on it and was found amongst hundreds of others in a state of dis-repair at the old Ghana record plant in Accra. Despite playing it to band leader George Amissah no title was forthcoming as the intended vocal had never been mixed in. Here Quantic has dusted it down and edited it into a surefire big-band dance-floor winner.

Mark Ernestus Presents Jeri-je - Mbueguel Dafa Nekh / Dub Dafa

A stunning new production by Mark Ernestus, drawn from his recordings with some of Senegal's greatest musicians — a griot clan of Sabar drummers from Kaolack in Senegal, led by Bakane Seck, with guest players and vocalists.
Jeri-Jeri's style of Mbalax is swingeingly masterful — heady and hard-grooving, with highly complex, fiercely succinct poly-rhythms — an ancient-futuristic music, mesmeric but sharp as nails, super-charged with drama. Featuring the lovelorn vocals of guest Mbene Diatta Seck, Sabar traditions are fused with furious Afro-Cubanismo, hard funk-rock, and shards of high-life.
Ernestus' nasty, hypnotic, stripped dub — a first in Mbalax — edges in the bass, profiles the talmbat and tungun drums, and scoops the sense out of the vocal

Supafrico - 2. The Sound Of Funky Africa

Second release on the wonderful 'Supafrico Records' digs up and dusts off four more mega-rare nuggets of superb Afro funk. First up is the excellent Afro Disco groove of Kabbala's 'Ashewo Ara', a lost gem originally released back in '82 on tiny UK independent Red Flame and now featuring highly on many collectors' wants lists. Next is Buari's 'I'm Ready', a chunk of pure dancefloor dynamite with a driving disco groove and great funky synths, taken from the Ghanian singer and percussionist's awesome 1979 'Disco Soccer' LP. On the flip we get the mega-rare and totally essential 'Body & Soul', a magnificent 10 minute mid-tempo Afro workout recorded in 1980 by Nigerian funkster William Onyeabor. Last up is a great extended edit of the Ashantis' brilliant funky bubbler 'Everybody's Groove' with its floor-filling groove and wicked vocals. These lovingly remastered rarities sound better than ever making this EP a must for anyone with a taste for those incredible funky Afro grooves.
