Das verdanken wir all jenen großartigen - und vor allem äußerst unterschiedlichen - Künstlern, welche ihren Weg in zwei aufregenden, manchmal aufreibenden, immer inspirierenden Dekaden zu uns gefunden haben. Aus dem Grenzland zwischem gefühltem Pop und fröhlicher Wissenschaft stößt nun auch der Kölner Multi-Instrumentalist GREGOR SCHWELLENBACH hinzu, der 20 Label-Klassiker aus dem Tanzgestein herausgelöst und sie unter kammermusikalischen Bedingungen neu eingespielt hat.

Die raffinierten Arrangements, die der studierte Komponist GREGOR SCHWELLENBACH für alles schreibt, was klingen kann, schmückten bis dato vor allem die Theater-, Film-, Funk- und Fernsehlandschaft. Nun hat der Herr über 1000 Instrumente eine populär-experimentale Expertise zum KOMPAKT'schen Repertoire erstellt und einige der sich dort zahlreich verbergenden elektronischen Evergreens radikal umgetopft. Nicht nur Liebhaber der musikalischen Synthese dürften sich verwundert die Ohren reiben, wenn landein, landaus eifrigst betanzte Technokracher wie etwa Voigt & Voigt's 'Vision 03' oder Mayer/Voigt's 'Unter Null' plötzlich als melancholische, beatbefreite Piano-Miniaturen das Frequenzspektrum umgarnen.

Dabei gehen dem Multitalent ebenso versierte Gastmusiker zur Hand, die ihre Persönlichkeit und Virtuosität in den Dienst der etwas anderen Sache stellen:
Mit Star-Flötistin DOROTHEE OBERLINGER etwa ist regelrechter Klassik-Adel vertreten, aber auch der Gitarrist CHRISTIAN BUCK oder die Harfespielerin JANE BERTHE sind anerkannte Größen ihres jeweiligen Gebietes und sonst zu hören als begnadete Interpreten von Steve Reich oder Claude Debussy. Von Instrumentenseite wird ebenfalls Verblüffendes vermeldet, z.B. die Verwendung eines seltenen DDR-Tasteninstruments namens 'Weltmeister Basset' für Kaito's 'Everlasting', das hypnotische Raunen eines alten Studio-Harmoniums auf Closer Musik's 'One Two Three (No Gravity)' und die epische Wucht des im Kölner Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum befindlichen Gamelanorchesters 'Kyai Sabda', welches für Voigt & Voigt's 'Gong Audio' zum Einsatz kam.

Kompakt's Waffe der Wahl war zumeist die gerade Bassdrum, ihre minimalistische Schönheit unsere Dialektik. Doch strenge Diskurshüter eines imaginierten Grals, das wollten wir nie sein und das hat auch Gregor erkannt, der jedem der ausgewählten Track eine neue Stimme gibt, um neue Geschichten erzählen zu können. So stellt er mit überraschend umformulierten Akustikversionen, etwa von Jürgen Paapes 'Triumph' (für präpariertes Klavier), Justus Köhnckes 'Was Ist Musik' (für Streichquartett) oder Closer Musik's 'Maria' (für Klavier) gewagte Behauptungen auf, zieht unerwartete Schlüsse und schafft es doch jedes Mal wieder des Pudels ursprünglichen Kern - die Melodie, die Hookline, das Gefühl - in neuem Glanz erstrahlen zu lassen.

Re:Vision series restarts with Steve Poindexter's timeless classic 'Computer Madness'. We are very honored and excited to be able to re-release this beast of a track! It's hard to imagine that this was really created over 2 decades ago. So the task at hand was to find the right contemporaries to revise this masterpiece, we didn't have to look far to find the man for the job: Function is an old friend here at THEMA, and things got even better when he brought in Jerome Sydenham to co-produce the second treatment. It's thus with great pride we announce our Re:Vision of Computer Madness, featuring two resolutely modern reinterpretations of Poindexter's classic.
The original by Poindexter dates all the way from 1989 and is a brief, headlong rush into drum machine-fueled raw acid and has long been a staple of the genre for many as well as the first release on the seminal Musique Records. We wanted to start off with a stomper, so for the whole A side, we have Function with occasional co-conspirator Sydenham with an unstoppable driving interpretation that straightens the busy drums of the original into a pounding techno pulse and takes repeated, changing portions of the original acid line as its central riff. Much of the action here occurs in the dirty, growling bass the pair add to the lower register; this is peak time damage for the most unrelenting floors. On the flip side we start off with Function's deep, dubbed out reinterpretation, but it soon strides forward into the style of psychedelic but jacking techno familiar from his recent, more extroverted output. Even at almost double the length of the original, there's still a palpable aura of reverence to the way he approaches the track; it should come as no surprise that he ranks it highly in his favorites list. Then of course we finish off with Poindexter's original 1989 version, with all its original bang and glory. Still sounds fresh and as inspiring as it did the first time we heard this way back when...
Functioning as a reunion for friends as well as a re-evaluation of past and present achievements, Re:Vision looks back to the rich past while still moving unstoppably into the future. Look out for the next 2 releases in the Re:Vision series that's following up next!

Herbert House music fans will not be disappointed by this clutch of rare tracks, available for a short time on vinyl. After such an overwhelming positive response to Matthew Herbert's recent return with the Wishmountain project 'Tesco', Accidental records have decided to release this limited run 12' featuring some of the highlights of the original project., including the classic 'Radio'.
Radio was first championed by Djs such as Sven Vath and Westbam as well as being a club classic for legendary clubs like Fuse in Belgium. The track blasted its way in to nightclubs around the world despite being made only from 8 sounds of a beaten up plastic radio. In many ways it made Matthew's name, as someone ready to bring real and challenging sounds to the largely synthetic soundscape of club music while being unafraid to make people dance at the same time.
