Jeff Derringer - The Astronaut EP
SUARA331
SUARA
12inch21.11.201821.NOV.18

TechnoElectroTechno

Smartbar resident Jeff Derringer takes the reigns for the latest Suara release, alongside remixes from Blueprint boss James Ruskin and German duo Cassegrain.

Hugely respected as a producer, Derringer unleashes 'Mercury' - a heavy hitting, expansive techno weapon. Analog weight and synth stabs intertwine, reverberating around this constructed chasm, whilst a booming kick, crunched up hats and modulated toms provide a dizzying spell of suspense and tension.

Up next, 'Apollo' is a gritty, glitched out emotive number. Beginning with an twisted synth line and pulsating kick combo it develops into an introspective journey, with Derringer panning percussion and distorted claps to build a dystopian soundscape in the mind.

On the B side, UK techno linchpin and Blueprint mastermind, James Ruskin, takes to remixing 'Mercury' - harnessing that 90's flair that has cemented him as a long-standing bastion of the UK's scene. It's a heavyweight slammer, injecting hydraulic hats and warped samples to give an almost primeval air to its makeup. An added sense of urgency and complexity, with moments of suspense and tension when required, showcase exactly why Ruskin is held in such legendary status.

To close out the EP, German duo Cassegrain turn 'Apollo' into a dark, droning atmospheric groove. It's frenetic, fist pumping stuff, with an underwater essence made ever more present by the sonar-like bleeps. A no nonsense closer, that deserves to be unshackled on the heaviest of systems.

Rhythmatic - It Is What It Was (Retrospective 2021)
NWKT21
Network Records
12inch26.02.202126.FEB.21

TechnoTechnoBeatsBass

That was the question put to Mark Gamble when the initial mixes of “Take Me Back” were delivered to Network in 1990.

Mark - he of the mad Mohican haircut - replied as low and dirty as you want. His subsequent definitive Bass Heads mix became the ultimate Dance Music With Bleeps anthem, causing chaos and literally carnage as bass bin speakers in clubs throughout the World were well and truly blown. Network had to get a lawyer on board to deal with compensation claims from outraged club owners as Take Me Back was hailed as an instant iconic classic.
A Robert Gordon edit “with extra bass” added Steel City credibility and that, plus promo copies on a spoof 0742 label, built up the myth that Mark hailed from Bleep capitol Sheffield.

In fact despite being a member of Krush whose mega “House Arrest” generated headlines hailing Sheffield as the UK’s equivalent of Detroit, boffin Mark was creating his brooding earthquake sonic booms from a tiny bedroom studio in his Nottingham house.

To celebrate Network’s 30th Anniversary, Mark searched for the master tape of his 1990 gem and has come up with a typically sound splat of a remix.

It’s Track 1 here and “Take Me Back” also features with a TJ edit of the Anniversary remix, plus the aforementioned classic Bass Heads and Rob Gordon edit versions.

There’s also the original versions of “Frequency” and “Demons” which each followed up “Take Me Back” and were also acclaimed as iconic Dance Music With Bleeps moments. The late great John Peel’s Radio 1 show hammered “Demons” which went to top the USA Billboard Dance Chart.

These frequencies still resonate.

Various - NOTHING IS REAL VA #2 EP
NIR009
Nothing Is Real
12inch10.07.202010.JUL.20

TechnoTribalTechno

The second volume of Nothing Is Real’s self-titled compilation builds on their towering reputation as leading lights within the global electronic music community. As the label’s first release distributed by the respected Dutch record label and store Bordello A Parigi, the collection is set to further establish their international presence and spread their eclectic sound far and wide.

Bringing together diverse influences from across the spectrum of electronica and into new wave and ambient music, Nothing Is Real stand at the forefront of modern dance music as sonic innovators that continue to push boundaries with each offering.

Curated by Alberto Iovine and Alessandro Fumagalli, also known under the stage name Modular Project, this four-track collection takes listeners on a journey through the outer atmosphere of techno, expanding and evolving the genre into new forms along the way.

Cantor’s opening track kicks things off with a hypnotic, driving groove built on acidic synths before Niv Ast & Roe Deers bring a human touch to the proceedings with a vocal-led heater that recalls classic ‘80s sounds. Dharma pairs shuffling rhythms with extraterrestrial soundscapes that recall Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, before Argia closes the record with force and momentum, surrounding voltaic synthesizers and tribal drums with expressive atmospherics.

Davide Piras - Beyond Our Reach EP
BAXN004
BLACKAXON
12inch10.01.202010.JAN.20

TechnoElectroTechno

Jay Clarke's masterful BLACKAXON imprint returns with a shapeshifting EP from Davide Piras.

What began as a sonic sketchbook for Clarke to express his expansive view of electronic music, is evolving. The label is opening up to artists who hold a shared passion for creating dynamic and interesting techno compositions, with a few surprises here and there. Following last October's superb contribution from rising talent Yant, experimental techno artist David Piras drops a quadruplet of cuts to join the BLACKAXON fold.

His BLACKAXON debut, "Beyond Our Reach", is a true all-rounder. It leads with the dusty slow bass monster "Radiation Belt", before the gritty electro noodlings of "Multipolar" enter the fore. The analogue-infused rave cut "System Cartesian" takes the EP into otherworldly realms, before atmosphere-heavy "Pangaea Heritage" closes out the work, evoking a hazy afterhours vibe.

"Davide's productions hold an air of Convextion about them, he's one of my favourite artists. I locked into that right away and knew I wanted to release his music. When I listen to Davide's tracks I feel as though I'm in the middle of a sci-fi movie, they're funky and futuristic tales from the deep. Amazing!" - Jay Clarke

Leon Vynehall - Rare, Forever
ZEN272
Ninja Tune
12inch28.04.202128.APR.21

HouseElectroTechnoTechno

Sound Virus - Swirl EP

Mint Condition
12inch27.10.202127.OCT.21

HouseBreaksTechnoTechno

Mint Condition - A record label focused on excavating the outer fringes of classic House and Techno. Unreleased mixes, classics, overlooked gems and never heard before material, mined from the last 30 years of contemporary dance music are the order of the day. From Chicago, Detroit and New York to London and beyond. Mint Condition have got their digging hats on to bring you exclusive heat and those rarer than rare jams that have been in your wants list for years. Dig in....

Having previously collaborated as SYT for releases on Sabres of Paradise and also having had releases on Hard Hands, DJ Scott James and producer, writer and musician Chris Hayne teamed up once again forming Sound Virus to share their more esoteric dancefloor visions. 'Swirl' was originally appeared in 1995, a limited vinyl only release on their own imprint Lux Recordings,

First up 'Follow Your Feet' opens with haunting synths that lead into razor sharp percussion and a forceful b-line that drives the track to a mesmeric peak, whilst a repetitive vocoded vocal stirs the electro soul. 'Continuum' heads off into electo-tech territory, defty programmed breakbeats underpin the filthiest of bass lines making this track a true dancefloor devastator. 'Swirl' takes a deeper approach, with pumping bass and driving beats supporting lush chords and a subtle, chiming synth riff. EP closer 'Bossa Blue Dub' drops the tempo slightly for a more other-worldly chug, whilst remaining no less compelling.

This EP is a true rarity that has achieved a cult status amongst the most discerning DJs and record collectors alike. It has been legitimately re-released with the full involvement of Scott James and Chris Hayne from Sound Virus and Lux Recordings, lovingly remastered by London's Curve Pusher from the original sources especially for Mint Condition. 100% legit, licensed and released. Dug, remastered, repackaged and brought to you by the caring folks at your favourite reissue label - Mint Condition!

Triamb Music

TechnoAcidTechno

Steve has an undeniable fingerprint that proves his passion for futuristic techno beats with acidic bass-lines, and a special talent for creating atmospheres that generate hypnosis. Two tracks that make proper tension at the dance-floor with an essential force to stand out in the mix with tenacity and groove. On the other hand, JP Enfant, the Dutch DJ and producer who debuts in Triamb with a devastating remix of the track "Codex", has under his sleeve some well crafted releases in prominent labels including DGTL. His version of the track "Codex" is a surgical tool from which he reveals strong passion for pure techno sounds with a majestic festival spirit. To close with a flourish, the multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin, Saumeth, presents a remix of the track Acid Receiver, delivering a solid industrial techno sound, which transports us to that characteristic Berlin raw techno mood, emblematic in bunkers and abandoned places because of their capability to bring a unique sound coming from enormous concrete structures. An essential remix that talks by its own

Julien Bracht - Now Forever One 2x12"
SYS005LP
System Records
2x12inch20.09.202120.SEP.21

TechnoElectroTechnoBeatsAmbientHouseNeotrance

Early support by: Laurent Garnier, AME, Marco Bailey, Jennifer Cardini, Terrence Fixmer, Kyle Geiger, Marcel Dettmann, Apparat, Richie Hawtin, Vril, Charlotte De Witte, Sasha, Benjamin Demage any many more..

Fresh off of a remix for Grimes’ “My Name is Dark”, producer Julien Bracht has been powering through CV19 studio seclusion on full-power, with a distinct vision for brighter days ahead. Bracht’s new album, “Now Forever One,” an emblem of dark analog synthwave, is set to drop June 11. Bracht’s first solo album under his own namesake is cut with surgical precision for the shoegazing astral sound travellers who long to break out of their pandemic quarantines, and reconvene for techno-induced ascension. The album’s first single, “Melancholia,” and it’s accompanying video, is already breaking hearts and charts. An exquisite sonic hybrid of communal revelry and profound introspection, “Now Forever One,” focuses Bracht’s multilayered craftsmanship on resolving this era’s angst with sensory exploration and optimism.

As a lifelong drummer, Bracht’s insatiable musical energy lead him to bang out his first 3 EPs within one year of first being signed in 2011-12. In 2015 he founded the band Lea Porcelain with Markus Nikolaus in London. Their hypnotic post-rock debut release in 2017, “Hymns to the Night,” gained instant acclaim from UK tastemakers Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Zane Lowe, to name a few. The lads broke back onto the international stage with dates on several major festivals around Europe, including the Leeds/Reading Festival, Great Escape Brighton and Latitude. Rich output combined with the inclusion of live drums in his solo live sets quickly gained Bracht recognition and slots on the global tour circuit.

“Now Forever One” forges Julien Bracht’s transition from techno djing, while continuing the explorations of texture and timbre over functional song structures from Lea Porcelain, to a more open-ended search for the aural sublime — the substrate on which music, life and light glide to create momentary nodes of meaning in an increasingly meaningless sociopolitical atmosphere. These are crucial themes to Bracht’s process and approach. “The intention in my music is to strengthen people’s awareness and minds… I want us all to gather in spirit and stick together.”

The album exemplifies Bracht’s hunt for elemental juxtaposition with the warm Prophet 6’s sawtooth howls and bright pads against chillingly indifferent pulsing basslines and percussion. Clocking in at just under 65 minutes, “Now Forever One’s” tracks are sequenced to take the listener through the full emotional arch of a 15-hour rave, with an emphasis on those moments of collective epiphany where heaving techno floors become the perfect microcosm for an idealistic and interconnected future. Interspersed with improvisational one-takes, the album submerges the listener in polyrhythmic meditations, of which “Streets” and “Nocturne” are standout examples, and soars on the vaulted synth melodies of future dance floor favourites “Melancholia” and “Dreams of Euphoria.” Sascha Ring of Apparat & Moderat puts it perfectly: “I played “Melancholia” the night I got it at Mutek Festival in Mexico City, and instantly knew it’ll shine on a big floor at the right time. It’s just the right balance of majestic melodic deepness.” The sounds are both triumphant and exploratory.

Greater than the sum of its parts, Bracht’s latest release hints at the artist’s emerging potential for nailing our moment’s zeitgeist; learning to live smaller while constantly seeking higher heights. Inhabiting the fertile ground between solitary rumination and dance-floor convenance, the launch of “Now Forever One’s” lunar expedition into the techno oblivion of pandemic lockdown is oddly fitting.

Now, from the darkest part of Reykjavik, comes an epic story of how to survive this new time of crystallised surroundings and sterilized coffee-machines. It's also about a musician that connects his equipment the wrong way but still gets satisfying results.

Red Axes - Sound Test (Transparent Red Repress)
PH84RED
PHANTASY SOUND
12inch07.10.202107.OCT.21

HouseDeepTechnoTechno

Following their hugely well-received, refreshingly outlandish debut EP for Phantasy, Israeli club outsiders Red Axes return to the label with another three-track delight of leftfield dance entitled 'Sound Test'. Debuting on Phantasy in 2018, 'Sipoor' by Red Axes was massive.

The release received critical acclaim, not to mention heavy support within the club realm from DJs like Call Super, Jennifer Cardini, Ewan Pearson, Fort Romeau, Massimiliano Pagliara, Chloe, and many more.

Highly soughtafter by those who've heard Erol Alkan unleash it in recent months, 'Sound Test' kickstarts Phantasy Sound's 2019 - a rolling tool for a dance floor sliding into another dimension, constructed around a dramatic, numeric countdown.

A minimal, skeletal build builds hroughout to one of the most out-there breakdowns in recent rave-blotted memory, as the Axes slowly but surely rebuild their house to even more outlandish new proportions.

'Shabak Shalom' quickly snatches the record back from outer space and drags it deep into the basement, zoning in on the gritter, strobe-ready sound that defines the duo's most club-ready work.

All of the Axes' weapons of choice are deployed as unusually as per usual; militant drums, battered electronics, fucked- frequencies, wiry post-punk guitar lines and lovingly drowned traditional instruments blend to create their own special, slightly-menacing interpretation of hi-NRG.

Finally, on the unapologetically sprawling and immediately effective closing number, 'Kookoo Pa-pa', Red Axes demonstrate their inherent talent, if proof were ever needed, of conjuring rolling, simmering tension in otherworldly shades. Those who enjoyed the cartoonish motor FX of 'Teroof' will be delighted to find themselves found into an even wackier race this time round, hitting on the origins of Chicago jack, acid meltdowns and screeching no-wave.

Mint Condition - A brand new record label focused on excavating the outer fringes of classic House and Techno. Unreleased mixes, classics and overlooked gems mined from the last 20+ of contemporary dance music are the order of the day. From Chicago, Detroit and New York to London and beyond, Mint Condition have got their expert digging hats on to bring you exclusive heat and those rarer than rare jams that have been on your wants list for years! Dig in....

Terry Francis' name is synonymous with London's mid 90's to early noughties underground Tech-House heyday. A longtime underground DJ and tastemaker who has graced the booth in every major club you'd care to mention, Francis was also a prodigious producer and label owner who found himself working alongside the infamous SWAG mob and heading up the now seminal labels 'Wiggle' and 'Eye 4 Sound' labels. With a fervent international DJ schedule and numerous productions appearing all over the place, a residency at Fabric, major label remixes piling up and everything else in-between, Francis' name has been solidified as a bonafide UK legend, a force to be reckoned with. Let's rewind to 1999, Surreal Records, a subsidiary of SWAG, 'Took From Me' drops and is an instant classic.... even now, a decade later, it's a record that peels the roof off a night-club (in the right hands, of course!) It's all here inside 'Took From Me', the sparse, chopped up drum programming, ominous floor-shaking basslines and weirdly warped vocal samples that make you wonder. B-side see's the equally sparse yet compelling 'Clint's Groove' spreading out over one whole side of wax, it's all filtered rolling drums, aquatic sirens and a monstrous bassline that could easily swallow London town whole! Insanity! This one will easily slide into your record for months, if not years. Essential transmissions from London's underbelly, often imitated.....

'Took From Me' has been legitimately re-released with the full involvement of all license holders for 2019 and remastered by London's Curve Pusher from the original sources especially for Mint Condition. 100% legit, licensed and released. Dug, remastered, repackaged and brought to you by the caring folks at your favourite reissue label - Mint Condition!
