2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals.

Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I’m A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener ‘They Game’ is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s ‘baggy’ sound. The energy mounts further with “Shelera”, a guitar-driven acidic banger, and “Sticks and Stones”, a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is “Break the Limit”, an EBM-laced number that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with “Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)” touching on darkwave territory. “Udibaby” and “Arpman” close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia.

Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album’s artwork starkly depicts the project’s name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It’s rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.

What is techno? It's a question that might be worth considering in our current world away from the dancefloor, and that which is proposed by DJ Tennis on 'Anthems for No State', a new compilation commemorating ten years of music from Life and Death. A number of the label's most trusted associates offer their sonic answer to Tennis's query on this propulsive yet thoughtful compilation.

"Not all of the artists here are exclusively associated with 'techno', whatever that may be, and everyone took a different direction", explains Manfredi, the international DJ turned-lockdown bicycle repairman. "But in producing something outside of your comfort zone, or experimenting with something you'd never thought about experimenting with, it takes you right back to when you started, and so you have nothing to lose. And it's liberating."

Although 'Anthems for No State' focuses on the potential within one particular sound, it's the perfect anniversary accompaniment to a decade of one of electronic music's more unpredictable institutions. As Tennis himself puts it, "sometimes we failed, sometimes we were successful without ever expecting it, but we always want to keep things interesting within the manifesto of the label."

In this instance, techno is truly a matter of Life and Death.

Set against the backdrop of Birmingham in1990, a 17 year old Peter 'Doggy' Duggal, inspired by Cybotron and Kraftwerk, would escape to his bedroom with the few pieces of musical hardware he'd collected, spending days eking out what sounds those machines could produce, thankfully Peter remained resolute and what resulted was his first EP 'Psyche' originally released on the pioneering UK label Rham! Records.

'Psyche' itself is an absolute gem, an infectious and unrelenting bass-line drives the track, while dystopian chords and strings populate the higher end. Next up previously unreleased 'Haze' heads into breakbeat territory, a sparser live jam recorded straight from the desk, but there's no shortage of bass bin rattling sub-bass, bleeps and emotion here. 'Dog Food's ominous intro gives way to pounding drum machine rhythms, more incessant bass, melancholic melodies and subtle breakdowns that keep the warehouse energy flowing. Rounding off this EP is the previously unreleased 'Psyche' (Alternative Mix), adding subtler bleeps, another genre defining classic that would give the original mix a run for it's money anywhere.

More than 20 years after it was first launched, Gaetano Parisio has revived his well regarded techno label Conform Records. The new era starts with a new CONFORM RE-TOUCHED SERIES which will be released in four volumes over the coming months and contain classic Conform tracks that have been reedited by some of techno's most influential artists. Volume II arrives in June (26th) with the likes of Deetron, Matrixmann , Shlomi Aber, Sterac, and The Advent, all featuring.

First up is Swiss maestro Deetron, who has been laying down his sleek grooves for many years. His take on Outset is a quick techno roller with hypnotic drums and icy pads.

Next is the Be As One label boss Shlomi Aber, a long time titan of the scene who hails from Israel. His urgent remix of Watch Out is layered up with rubbery drums and mind melting synths to make for a real cosmic trip.

The Advent has long been synonymous with hard hitting techno as a live act and studio wizard. His most recent album was an excellent electro exploration. Here he flips Advanced Series Vol.1 A1 into a metallic banger with paranoid synths circling around the groove.

Sterac goes last and is the Dutch legend Steve Rachmad in his techno guise. His rapid remix of Advanced Series Vol.1 A1 is riddled with rubbery bass and molten synths and takes you into the future.

Last of all, the digital only bonus ups a remix by the inventive producer Matrixxmann who offers the dark and driving Nihilist mix.

Allen Saei, better known as Aubrey, is a unique DJ and record producer. This funny nickname came from the 80s British cartoon series where the main character had this red nose like him on the first day at the new school after moving from Portsmouth to Cowplain.

Aubrey's career though, is not funny at all since he is considered a pioneer of the global tech-house scene. Like a true rock star, it seems he lived a kind of troubled life across Europe, with a reputation that has made him very well respected in the US also, already in the mid 90s.

He's always played the best clubs and festivals at the four corners of the world, produced some crucial records for labels such as Crayon, Ferox, Intelligence and his own Solid Groove. He's recorded under a few different monikers, including Alien Disco which is also the name of label he self-released this 2x12" on originally.

Welcoming a new face to the family, Figure proudly introduces Arthur Robert. The Amsterdam-based producer emerges onto the scene fully formed, with a sound that is rich in detail as it channels a puristic groove. Inspired from a past of jungle and drum & bass, Robert now composes via an array of live electronics, infusing his productions with the fluidity and vitality of a direct recording. This first part of a forthcoming double EP showcases a matured sound, featuring deep, hypnotic trips, swelling, and swerving dub chords, dreamy break-science and finally the amalgamation of it all - a distinctly unique sound by an artist we hope to be presenting more of in the near future.

What a privilege it is to continue this series of reworks and remasters on Food Music and this time we’ve got "I’m Rushing” from Bump!! The original from 1992 was (and still is) one of the most infectious house records ever made, with it’s uplifting synth patterns and vocals filling the air with pure joy and happiness. In addition to a re-master on the well known original, the new reworks here bring “I’m Rushing” bang up to date in impeccable style. Chambray leads the charge with an uplifting new synth pattern and pounding drums which compliment the original so well. Theo Kottis steps up with a beautiful mix that adds an Italo twist to complete a killer reworks package. Don’t sleep on this one.

The unique sound setting created by the evocative power of music will lead you into a magical desert that make you feel immersed in a sort of an ancestral rite. The sounds of the Turkish musical tradition are mixed with tight rhythmic patterns and electronic elements, giving a definitely dance-floor imprint to each tracks, where past and modernity merge to create a perfect harmony. But the original and authentic vibe of this EP are the beautiful voice of the Turkish singer Beyza Cakir and the percussions of Lorenzo d'Erasmo, who played a decisive role in the creation of the album.

While confined to his remote studio by the global pandemic, Sam KDC delivered a follow up to his debut LP for Horo with 4 malicious Techno subversions. Continuing on from the addition of breakbeats on the Omen Rising LP, further exploration with shards of breakbeats being woven into his bleak constructs continues on all tracks here. A Mutiny In Monochrome side steps into new rhythmic zones once again defying uniform categorisation.

Tibi Dabo is the latest project from Barcelona born DJ and producer Max Guardans.
Following on from last year’s La Dorada on Rebellion, he brings his enigmatic sonic
exploration to Crosstown this May.

The EP opens up with the gentle yet thudding bass of Her Moon. The track is ten minutes
of pure euphoria. Mesmerising cosmic synths travel towards the first breakdown where the
track enters a darker phase before they weave their way back in as a 90s inspired piano
topline joins proceedings. It’s All Behind takes the EP on a deeper trip with an emotive,
soulful, vocal and shimmering melodies. Closing the EP, Nowhere Beach deploys a rapid
beat with industrial hints and a rolling bassline, whilst keeping the cosmic feel of its
predecessors. A warm synthline uplifts in the breakdown.

The alias of Max Guardans, Tibi Dabo is also the name of a mountain that overlooks
Guardans’ hometown of Barcelona. Under this alias the young DJ and producer seeks to
explore and experiment with a wide and varied sonic soundscape. His first EP, 2017’s
Ende, was signed to Sasha’s highly acclaimed label, Last Night On Earth. Last year’s
offering La Dorada was picked up by Damian Lazarus who signed it to his Rebellion
imprint, with both EPs showcasing Guardans’ ability to create evocative music that shows
a musical maturity beyond his years.

One Records continue to celebrate an illustrious 10 years of operation with a 3-part compilation featuring both auspicious and established friends that label head Subb-an has gathered across his career. Parts 1 and 2 featured the likes of Matthew Jonson, Adam Pits, Urulu ( Liquid Earth ) and more.

The final instalment of the 10 year comp features 4 flourishing producers: Nolga, Jack Michael, Lore and Monika Ross who congregate to meld together a satisfying cross section of modern minimal: reduced and refined club music suffused with a twist of UKG.

After kicking off the year with Body Reflections pt.1 on Tresor, Berlin-based, Bournemouth-born Ben Thomas aka BNJMN is back with new label Tiercel. As an outlet for floor focused tracks he kicks off the imprint with "Paean" - 2 slabs of atmospheric, hypnotic, sci-fi Techno plus an ambient excursion in true otherworldly BNJMN fashion.

The A1 track "Mass Conductor" solidifies BNJMN as a producer who can take the mood in any direction, creating layer upon layer of dense sonics which build to a pulverising climax. "The Greater Void" is a jarring beatless soundscape which takes you to the edge of the earth and finally the title track "Paean" is a song of worship - smooth yet hard, manic yet playful; taking you on a journey of paradoxes and sonic mysteries.

Belgian techno wizard Cri Du Coeur is back with a new 2-part vinyl release on his label Arkham Audio titled 'Erickson' & 'Erickson on Acid', which features remixes exclusively from French artists. Jerome D., the man behind the Cri Du Coeur alias, is prized in the industry for giving platforms to Belgian and French artists throughout his career, so it comes as no surprise that he is showing his francophile roots by having a solely French lineup for the remixes on this release. Following the recent release of his EPs 'Diaphragm' and 'Warning', and now bringing us the inebriating 'Erickson' & 'Erickson on Acid', Cri Du Coeur has established that his new alias and freshly-founded but tenacious Arkham Audio label are a force to be reckoned with. The entrancing yet adrenalizing sound that he has adopted shows that his approach to industrial electronic music knows no boundaries or compromises.

The first part of this release features the original mix of 'Erickson' by Cri Du Coeur and remixes of the track by Electric Rescue, Wex 10 , and Trunkline. The second part 'Erickson on Acid' puts a squelching acid twist on things and features remixes by Roman Poncet, Umwelt, and Zadig.

The original mix of 'Erickson' leads with a strong beat and a mixture of industrial sounds that makes for a sublime dark dancefloor track. Electric Rescue follows on with a remix that engages the listener with a terrorising yet intoxicating heavy baseline. Next up is Wex 10 who enchants us with a bouncy laserbeam rhythm and muffled looping vocals. Last but not least on the 'Erickson' lineup is Trunkline's remix which delivers an addictive hazy melody and a deep and dirty mechanical synth horn.

Cri Du Coeur plays with tensions in 'Erickson (on Acid)', putting the listener into a state of hypnosis with squelching sounds that give the song a raunchy character. We are implored to dance as Roman Poncet's remix bears layers of lively percussion beats with twangy synth melodies. The mood intensifies once more as Umwelt's remix features a dark and fuzzy baseline that contrasts with a screeching siren sound creating an ultimate thrilling experience for the listener. Zadig closes off this immense concoction of remixes with a relentless distorted base and scintillating machinelike background noises.

Cri Du Coeur has outdone himself by bringing together such a well-suited selection of artists to create a visceral and magnetizing collection of tracks that showcases his competence in making industrial techno.

Hexagon Cloud RMXD celebrates the diverse influences of Erika's solo release Hexagon Cloud on Interdimensional Transmissions Marcellus Pittman remixed the hypnotic Tow Ride from Erika's debut Solo album with a stated goal of making it darker and "more evil". Canadian electronic music duo Orphx, remixed Hexagon Cloud, resulting in an immense, impeccable production. BMG, Erika's mate in Ectomorph, also shares his vision of her track, A Cellular Meltdown.

Delsin turns its attention to the archives of one of the great early pioneers of Dutch techno - Eevo Lute Muzique. The label was founded in 1991 by Wladimir Manshanden and Stefan Robbers (who was already recording seminal early techno records as Terrace for Djax-Up-Beats). Channeling the inspiration of the Detroit originators and mixing it up with their own synth pop and new wave influences, Manshanden and Robbers (adopting the Florence alias) forged a bold aesthetic with Eevo Lute, both musically and visually. This was an early iteration of techno as listening music, with an emphasis on expression and narrative over dancefloor functionality, helped in no small part by Manshanden's striking poetry. This double set of remastered, reissued tracks gathers together the earliest Florence and Wladimir M. material, largely recorded between 1991 and 1994, across five discs - the definitive document of a treasured piece of Dutch techno history. Perc Trax is proud to announce Breaking The Seal; the debut album from Ghost In The Machine. Having already hit hard on the label with their "One Louder" (2017) and "King Dead" (2018) EPs now the time has come for them to expand their range even further across the ten tracks that make up Breaking The Seal.

Frank Nitzinsky & Nils van Lingen began collaborating as Ghost In The Machine in 2016, first releasing on the Genosha Basic label before working with Perc Trax. As remixers they have turned in acclaimed rerubs of Paula Temple's Joshua & Goliath and Perc & Truss' Leather & Lace whilst their DJ performances began in their home country of the Netherlands but soon took them across Europe including making their Russian debut recently in Moscow.

From the extended scene setting intro of title track "Breaking The Seal" to the genre fusing antics of "Combo Breaker", "Form Of Steam" and "Nexus 96" these 8 tracks build on the established Ghost In The Machine sound, but add something new to each track, taking their sound in directions we've not heard from them before and which we might not have expected.

Peter Elflein - last seen in the mid-noughties as part of Liebe Ist Cool after legendary solo releases on Bruchstuecke, Zehnkampf and Hal 9000 - resurfaces with a devastating after-hours cut from Schneider & Radecki, the one-off alter ego of mnml legends Sammy Dee (Perlon) and Guido Schneider revive 'Chic', an electro monster played by Tyrant (Craig Richards, Lee Burridge, Fabric) in their prime. Hailing from Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki, Penelope’s Fiancé has been keeping over the past few years a fast pace of work, constantly producing tracks and releasing new music, having shaped a unique sound that drifts across the borders of lo-fi, post-industrial and fuzzy techno. The Cutting Edge Of A Knife is the culmination of all these previous excursions, a solid display of his ability to craft emotionally intense tracks, merging a ghostly, gloomy grandeur with squelching percussive patterns. Opener ‘Lethe’ emerges from the haze with its cryptic atmosphere, moulded in lethargic drones, scattered vocalisms and sparse yet piercing beats and rhythmic build-ups. A panic-fuelled, 160bpm ravey epic, ‘Futile Endevours’ brandishes an ecstatic, pumelling rhythm over recurring trance- flavored melodic phrases and unnerving vocal samples. ‘I Wasn’t Always There’ is a seductive, dark elegy whose melancholic and lush synth melodies wash over chopping kicks and ice-cold hi-hats. ‘Anxiety’ sounds like a slow techno roller, where frozen metallic percussion meets a cavernous bass, right before the off-kilter, cacophonous buzz of ‘The Lie Closest To The Truth’. Closing track ‘The Cutting Edge Of A Knife’ is an intoxicated oriental-stepper, soaked in vaporous middle-eastern percussion and muezzin-like chants.
