The exact relationship between Henry (T-Bone Burnett) and Howard Coward (Elvis Costello) remains ambiguous. They often referred to themselves as “One and a Half Brothers,” which might hint at their height difference or imply they were not actually siblings but were involved in an elaborate ruse. Their musical partnership, known as The Coward Brothers, was initiated by Smiley “Doc” Snipson, who discovered Henry Coward in 1956 and signed him for a UK tour. The brothers' hit single, “My Baby Just Squeals (You Heel),” was followed by less successful records and a controversial Cold War-themed song. To preserve their fading fame, Snipson orchestrated their supposed death in a plane crash, but they were actually in hiding on a Caribbean island, secretly recording music and sending it back to Snipson. When their funds ran out, they returned to Miami and made sensational claims about writing famous songs, leading to a brief stint as songwriters for Bill Bogguss. They later resumed recording, but their partnership eventually fractured, leading to years of estrangement. Their music, from early rock and roll hits to later, more introspective songs, is compiled in the album, The Coward Brothers. After years of silence, their story was explored in a radio program, revealing the complexity of their relationship and their enduring bond. Despite their tumultuous history, their music remains a testament to their unyielding spirit. The Coward Brothers are Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett. For a long time as well, he worked on creating what became his first solo album, waiting for the right moment when he could no longer contain all the melodies that populate this 14-leg epic. A voyage in a free world, where creation knows no formal constraints, where everything mutates according to the determined inspiration of the moment. Transforming the original pieces without knowing in advance how they will end up, disguising the instruments so that they are mistaken for others, nothing frightens this intrepid sailor whose ship is nevertheless securely moored at home, Ezechiel composes and plays at home in Paris. Sole master on board, the tinkerer illusionist prepares his piano with mechanic's tools (scotch tape, rubber, percussion, wooden claves adrift over the strings), obtaining instruments that do not sound where we expect them. Taken from Waldir Calmon's 'Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons' album on Copacabana (1970), from looking at this unassuming record cover featuring a middle-aged man sporting an impressive pair of glasses you wouldn't expect it to become the fabric to one of the songs from the iconic 'Madvillain’ album. But… like many things in life, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. 'Airport Love Theme’, like its name suggests, falls into full-on lounge territory. It’s feel-good music made to be the soundtrack for a utopian world that never really was. Yet behind the silky-smooth groove is an addictive earworm waiting to be heard.

'Afro Son' taken from the same album, pushes things in a different direction towards a sound that is more firmly rooted in the Brazilian tradition. This quirky 60's-breakbeat-funk groove is reminiscent of French artist Jean Jacques Perrey's 'E.V.A.', also from 1970, in its melody and backbeat, where the Moog synthesizer of Perrey is replaced with a more orchestrated sound by Calmon. This track is magical, cinematic and breakbeat-laden with a hidden unknown exoticism.

Waldir Calmon had an active career in music working from the '50s right up until his passing in 1982. His career started early, forming his first ensemble at the age of fourteen, originally working in bands in nightclubs and writing jingles. He progressed in the early '50s to a long-running career working in television. In addition to his television work, he had success with his recording vocation, mixing in the same musical circles as greats such as Tom Jobi, João Gilberto and Doris Monteiro.

Their split EP State of Emergency (via Mnemonic’s Subsonic Ebonics label) sonically structures a bleak narrative across 4 electro-laden tracks from the midwest-based producers.

The escapade begins with “Black Manta Corps”, Huey’s classically styled 808 programming accompanying modulated analog synth play up front, while a stirring crescendo of soundtrack-esque chords provides cover from the rear. “Red Alert” offers the juxtaposition of funk-tinged bounce to a searing siren lead. Midway we’re offered a brief moment of repose with Huey demonstrating a masterful computer-funk bridge before the sirens’ sobering tone returns.

D. Strange continues the journey lacing haunting synth interplay that steadily stacks the tension alongside stimulating melodies, chest-pounding bass, and scattered triplets on “Exoframe”. While “Drapetomania” closes things out with zipping percussion, a mutated bass line, and atmospheric droning pads panning like a shadow creeping closer and closer…

Forged in the fertile acid house scene of the late 80s, A Trifle Too Far comprises childhood friends Simon Ward and Tony Grimley from Hornchurch, on London's outer fringes in Essex. Their insatiable thirst for seeking out new sounds led them to countless shindigs, parties and raves, eventually inspiring them to craft their own music based on their adventures on the dancefloor.

Their studio collaboration culminated in the creation of the remarkable record you currently hold in your hands: 'Catch Your Ear / Meringueatang'. This two-track release, recorded in 1992, offers forward-thinking and fresh prog-house cuts, as rare as hen's teeth and as exhilarating as they were upon their original release over three decades ago. Catch Your Ear was expertly engineered by Evren Omer, boss of Essex-based techno bunker Strategy Records, while Meringueatang was helmed by Matt Clayden, one half of M&M and Acorn Arts and the proprietor of X-Gate Records, another stalwart in Essex's underground dance scene.

'Catch Your Ear / Meringueatang' remains the only musical collaboration between the duo. When Mint Condition approached them to reissue this highly sought-after EP, both Simon and Tony were surprised and delighted in equal measure by the proposition. Now, a few months down the line, we find ourselves with yet another top-tier addition to the MC reissue catalogue, fully licensed from the artists, mastered and cut by Keith Tenniswood at Curve Pusher, and available once again for purchase. Liquor Talkin’ is the debut studio album from Texas-based country artist Don Louis. Born in Irving and raised on a 12-acre farm in Commerce, Texas, Don Louis learned the meaning of work early on. He grew up tending to livestock, singing along to George Strait and Al Green, and playing football. Done was an All-District defensive end for Commerce High School and played on scholarship at Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas. He performed well at NFL combines, but an injury in 2020 changed everything and Don son found himself chasing his other childhood dream - being a professional singer. Don’s mix of Country, Rock, and Rhythm and Blues has been winning over loyal fans from the start. He’s shared the stage with acts such as Dylan Wheeler, and Don’s personality and gritty voice have also earned him a healthy following on Spotify and social media. Ask Don how he’s doing and he’ll often reply, "I'm blessed and highly favored!” That attitude says it all.

The eighth and latest slate of refined retro-futuristic synth-pop by Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride aka Xeno & Oaklander is named after and inspired by "the study of what not to do, a negative image of a positive, the other side, the other:" Via Negativa (in the doorway light). Recorded in the fall of 2023 at their modernist Connecticut home fashioned into a two-story synthesizer laboratory and mixing studio, the album is uniquely visionary in spirit yet precision in execution, a contrast central to the duo's enduring chemistry. Embryonic piano sketches were translated to nuanced modular systems, which McBride weighted with "harmonic padding," tuned percussion, and a spectral transfer device capable of "rendering spasms of rhythmic overtonal filigree." Despite the technological complexity of their craft, emotively the songs require no deciphering - these are technicolor widescreen anthems of the cybernetic age. The eponymous opening track sets the pace, soaring sleekly over glittering synths and call-and-response vocals about arias, shattered light, and faces in stereo. From there the record expands and contracts, cycling through a gallery of moods and masks, animated by the band's fascination with drama, "the idea of personae," and theatrical characters. Track by track, a murky, tragic backstory reveals itself: forlorn figures navigating a treacherous mercury mine, alternately poisoned by fumes or buried in collapsing caverns. The tension between Teutonic, utopian synthetic pop and lyrical narratives of ghosts in silos, ruined mills, and the traumas of mineral excavation creates a compelling friction, alternately futurist and obsolete, elevated and subterranean. **Synopsis:** Kazuya Kinoshita is a fairly ordinary college student who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, who decided to move on. Devastated and feeling at rock bottom, he decides to download the new trending app, Diamond, on his phone and rents a new girlfriend to feel better. He ends up meeting a certain Chizuru Mizuhara, a young woman who, at first glance, seems to have everything he's looking for.

This vinyl includes songs dedicated to each girl from the anime (Ruka, Chizuru, Nami, Sumi) sung by their respective Japanese voice actresses, as well as the corresponding instrumental versions. Each song reflects the adventures, thoughts, and emotions that each of the girls experiences.

Here, gleaming tensile techno forms clean, straight lines while scratchy acoustic guitars scuff up edges to produce

ghostly audio. Poetry is snatched from the overhead, removed from the overheard; words borrowed from the ether are

spun into dizzying new shapes, sometimes reappearing in new settings, twisted back to front, side to side. Each track a

very different room - some soundtracked by little more than metronomic kick drum and robotic voice, others deep in

layer upon layer of melody and euphoric noise - and each room unmistakably, uniquely Underworld. The only advice

Lili Holland-Fricke and Sean Rogan’s debut album “dear alien” is a constellation of radiant improvised impulses, imagined in lucent fragments of cello, guitar and voice. Spacious, tender and glistening with rich electronic distortion, the record melds a spectrum of processed and natural sound as the artists invite listeners into their dreamlike world of synergetic introspections.

Cultivated through a shared spirit of resourcefulness and play, “dear alien” emerges as an organic meeting place in the compositional output of British-German experimental cellist Lili Holland-Fricke and Manchester-born guitarist and producer Sean Rogan. Having studied their respective instruments at the Royal Northern College of Music, both artists have flourished in eclectic solo and collaborative projects, creating intricate and intimate spheres of sound with a deep appreciation for songwriting and improvisation.

Holland-Fricke’s transition from the classical world to writing her own material, and later vastly expanding her palette with electronics, first converged with Rogan’s distinctive flair for production in 2022 on her EP “birdsong for breakfast” and single ‘draw on the walls’. Now, the duo present an album envisioned through true ‘50/50’ collaboration during the summer of 2023, written across two intensive weeks of improvising and experimenting at Rogan’s Greenwich home studio. A convergence of the artists’ sounds and influences, the music was fostered by the idea of making an album with ‘no plan’ and their shared recent discovery of Arthur Russell, to whom the final track is dedicated.

“dear alien” assembles eight compositions that emerged naturally as the duo created sketches with cello and pedals, guitar, tape loops and poetic vocal musings, forming songs that explore themes of waiting, circling back around, and glitchy communication. Moments of drifting through pillowy layers of sound contrast with saturated visions of electronic modification, where the record’s glowing instrumental contours are pushed to the extremes.

The plaintive shades of ‘half blue’ and meandering deliberations of ‘slow thing’ are teased by the friction of static signals and a sense of ever-mutating sonic mass – a sensibility most acutely realised in ‘dawning’, where cello-vocoder eruptions grow in magnitude, the absence of sound between them burdened with something sinister and unspoken. As the artists expand on this piece, ‘It’s the sound equivalent of squeezing your eyes shut to shield against the brightness of something you don’t want to see, only to find that each time you open them again the world is not softening but getting more relentlessly overwhelming, to the point of being totally blinding.’

Three tracks with lyrics – ‘at first’, ‘dear alien’ and ‘seem asleep’ – refract the album’s wistful and melancholic colours into poetic imagery and metaphors, ushering in reflections on relationship tensions and someone close feeling unknown, with hints towards wider unsettled feelings about climate change. In the spirit of lyrical improv, ‘seem asleep’ compiles lone lines from Holland-Fricke’s journals into a cut-and-paste collage around hopeful patience or futile lingering – either way conjuring a softness that welcomes the hazy ambience of ‘for a. r.’, the final composition which soundscapes the summer days spent making the album. As the artists describe of this track, ‘The music kind of leads somewhere, but then kind of leads nowhere, and just meanders around where it is, content to just be walking in a circle back to where it started.’

Esteemed US musician Mike Viola is bringing his new album Rock Of Boston to our shores with a handful of shows in November, forming a special pick-up band with members of The Zutons and The La’s for the tour. Mike Viola is a producer, musician, songwriter and singer best known for his work with Panic! at the Disco, Andrew Bird, Dawes, Ryan Adams and Jenny Lewis. However his solo career stands on its own, starting with a number of acclaimed records as the leader of New York based cult favourite Candy Butchers and 8 critically adored solo records. His original music has been featured on soundtracks for movies such as That Thing You Do!, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Get Him to the Greek. Rock Of Boston was recorded over the winter of 2023 on 8 track ½” tape at Barebones, Viola’s home studio in Los Angeles. Once again joined by his friends Jake Sinclair (Weezer, Sia, Panic! at the Disco) on bass and Brendon Urie (Panic! At The Disco) on drums. For UK shows Mike has roped in Sean Payne (The Zutons) and Jay Lewis (The La's, Cast) to join Jake Sinclair and himself on the road. Viola says, “I’m always writing songs, or pieces of songs, or riffs. My writing process changes every song, so I never get trapped in a method. I let the song lead me. While I was on a world tour playing guitar for Panic at The Disco, I wrote the bulk of this record on the bus between soundcheck and showtime. On the days off, I’d find a recording studio wherever we were and I’d book studio time to sneak away to lay down a few ideas. When the tour finished, Jake and Brendon came home to LA and we never stopped playing music together. We just switched from touring with Panic! to recording Rock Of Boston pretty seamlessly without a break. Maybe that’s why the riffs seem bigger on this record, we had spent all those months in hockey arenas around the world playing big music.”

Blake Lee has always been fascinated by the unknown, and space, in its isolating, mysterious vastness, embodies this theme immaculately. The open void, captured so memorably by Stanley Kubrick in '2001: A Space Odyssey', is Blake's far-reaching canvas on 'No Sound In Space', a cinematic meditation on the cosmos that's painted in nuanced, emotionally sincere colors. The Los Angeles-based composer has been contemplating his full-length debut since 2021, using his guitar as a sonic paintbrush rather than find himself snared in its traditional aesthetic constraints. Transforming its characteristics with effects and subtle processes, he layers sustained tones and intimate improvisations, creating richly visual polychromatic utopias teeming with unknown life.

Since 2011, Blake has been most known for being the guitarist and a music director for Lana Del Rey, notching up three songwriting credits on her acclaimed ‘Ultraviolence’ full length. He sees his solo work is a form of escapism, a place where he can experiment and find comfort and catharsis outside of expectations and formal structure. The album was written instinctively, and Blake made sure he didn't force anything, letting go and getting out of his own way, listening intently as sounds and textures materialized organically. "I didn't want to ruin it by being a perfectionist," he laughs. And his collaboration with Kenyan sound artist KMRU, who runs the OFNOT label and contributes to two of the tracks on the album, occurred similarly organically.

Blake was moved to reach out to KMRU when he caught a performance of 'Natur' at Los Angeles' Zebulon in 2022, leading to a prolonged back-and-forth. They didn't meet in person until earlier this year, by which time they'd become firm friends, continuously sharing music and conversation. KMRU had lent a valuable ear to Blake, who sent early playlists of 'NSIS' that, over the months, slowly evolved into the finished album. It's the first release on OFNOT that's not by KMRU himself; the label emerged last year with the release of KMRU's own 'Dissolution Grip', and Blake's debut immediately expands its sonic universe. Die PBS-Serie Earth Focus befasst sich mit den komplizierten Verbindungen zwischen Südkaliforniens Naturlandschaften und städtischer Entwicklung. Jede Episode erforscht einen bestimmten Ort, darunter den Los Angeles River, das Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Joshua Tree National Park und die Mojave Wüste. Bernadine oder Berna-Dean Washington nahm Anfang der 60er Jahre sieben Singles für den Produzenten Dave Bartholomew in New Orleans auf. Als Protegé von Earl King wurde ihre letzte Single 1964 auf dem Label GNP Crescendo in Los Angeles veröffentlicht und ähnelt stilistisch ihren früheren Imperial- und Post-45ern. 'Don't Try To Tell Me' und 'Laughing On The Outside' wurden für GNP aufgenommen. Beide Tracks sind in einem gefühlvolleren Stil und erregen viel Aufmerksamkeit in der aktuellen Retro-R&B-Szene.

Die einzige Spur von Kenneth Wright aus Atlanta sind eine Handvoll nicht aufgenommener Songtitel auf BMI, vertreten durch Awares Verlag Act One. Mindestens ein Dutzend seiner Aufnahmen wurden kürzlich in den Tonbandarchiven von Aware gefunden und 'The Souls Of Black Folks' ist die beste davon. Es enthält Kenneths Gesang und eine ebenso beeindruckende unbekannte weibliche Hauptrolle, die dem Projekt noch mehr Mysterium verleiht. Von derselben Quelle des Atlanta-Labels stammt Miss Louistines Interpretation des Sam Dees-Songs 'Extra, Extra'. Ursprünglich von Ben E. King als Albumtitel aufgenommen, war diese druckvollere Version auf einer kürzlich erschienenen 100 Club Anniversary 7inch zu hören und erfreut sich großer Nachfrage.

Miss Louistines Version von 'Con Me' war einer der besten Deep Soul-Funde der letzten Jahre. Die sanfte Chicago-Interpretation der Paragons von Sam Dees' Komposition aus dem Jahr 1975 wird seit langem bewundert, aber diese Southern-Soul-Bearbeitung des mittlerweile zum Klassiker gewordenen Songs ist atemberaubend. Um diesen geheimen Song-Klassiker wirklich in den Mittelpunkt zu rücken, haben wir Sam Dees' eigene Version als B-Seite hinzugefügt. Auch diese blieb unveröffentlicht, bis Kent 1998 auf die Bänder zugegriffen hat und sie nun endlich auf Single erscheint.

Sechzehn Jahre sind zwar vergangen, seit Isaac Hayes im Alter von nur 65 Jahren viel zu früh verstarb, aber er bleibt einer der beliebtesten und kultigsten Singer/Songwriter/Arrangeure in der Geschichte der Soul-Musik. Die Alben, die Hayes für Stax' Enterprise-Label produzierte, bleiben der Maßstab in Sachen "Symphonic Soul" und klingen auch heute noch genauso atemberaubend brillant wie damals, als sie neu veröffentlicht wurden. Hayes gehörte nicht nur zu einer kleinen Gruppe von Künstlern, die das Wachstum des Soul-Album-Marktes ('Hot Buttered Soul') vorangetrieben haben, sondern war auch ein durchweg erfolgreicher Single-Künstler, der zwischen 1969 und 1976 sechzehn aufeinanderfolgende Singles in den R&B-Charts platzierte - die meisten davon schafften es auch in die Pop-Szene. Die größten Hits wurden bereits früher in Anthologien zusammengestellt, aber 'Hot Buttered Singles' ist die Compilation, die die A- und B-Seiten aller 45er von Hayes aus der "Yellow Stax"-Ära in chronologischer Reihenfolge und in ihren Original-Singleversionen präsentiert. Einige davon sind zuvor noch nie auf CD erschienen. Viele dieser famosen Soul-Tracks gehören zu seinen beliebtesten Aufnahmen, die auch das Soul- und Pop-Radio revolutionierten, darunter das mit Wah-Wah-Intro befeuerte 'Theme From Shaft', 'The Look Of Love', 'Never Can Say Goodbye', 'Walk On By' oder 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' aus der Feder von Jimmy Webb.

Über diese beiden Mirwood floorfiller muss man nicht viel sagen, nur beide Tracks auf derselben 45er zu haben, ist ein wahrer Luxus. 'That Beatin' Rhythm' ist der Inbegriff der Northern Soul-Tanzszene und seit nunmehr 50 Jahren ein echter Hit. Die Instrumentalversion (die dem eigentlichen Sänger der A-Seite zugeschrieben wird) war damals ebenso populär, wurde in den letzten Jahren jedoch etwas vernachlässigt - die Gesangsversion wird von den meisten DJs gespielt.

Jimmy Conwell ist ein großer Name in der Soulmusik von Los Angeles, sei es als Solosänger bei 4J, Gemini und Mirwood oder als Leadsänger der Exits bei Gemini und Kapp. 'Let It All Out' wurde gemeinsam mit seinen beiden Hauptproduzenten Len Jewell Smith und Hank Graham geschrieben. Eine atemberaubende Northern Soul-Ballade. Als B-Seite gibt es die großartige Ballade 'I'm So Glad' in der Version von The Exits.

Kanaku y el Tigre never thought that what started as a fun
project among friends would become one of the most
acclaimed bands in Latin America. Their first single,
"Bicicleta", was made without the pressure of trying to fit
into the local scene. This attitude fueled the creativity with
which they managed to create an important space for
themselves in the local music scene. "Bicicleta" is the city
of Lima, the constant search for an identity, the illusion,
the monsters, the carbon monoxide, the belonging and the
absence.

The indie folk and experimental pop group Kanaku y el
Tigre has a 15-year artistic career and is considered one of
the most influential contemporary bands in the Latin
American music scene.

The band has been part of festivals such as Rock al Parque
and Estéreo Picnic in Colombia, Vive Latino in Mexico, Río
Babel in Madrid, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, and has
toured in other countries such as Argentina, France, and
Chile.

Additionally, they have shared the stage with
Aterciopelados and collaborated with Jorge Drexler, Kevin
Johansen, Miki Gonzáles, Leonor Watling, among other
renowned musicians from Latin America.
