Released in 1996, A Dave Brubeck Christmas is a solo piano album by the renowned American jazz pianist and composer. Featuring Brubeck originals: “To Us Is Given” and “Run, Run, Run to Bethlehem,” the album also includes versions of the holiday favorites “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Away in a Manger,” “Joy to the World,” “The Christmas Song,” “Jingle Bells” and more. This new 2-LP edition is released on 180-gram vinyl with lacquers cut at 45RPM by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound.

Maceió, the capital of Brazil’s Alagoas state on its sprawling east-coast, is home to pastel coloured colonial houses, white sand beaches and a brilliant young composer, poet and multi-instrumentalist named Bruno Berle.
With a voice of pure gold and a startling sensitivity for heartfelt pop songwriting, on No Reino Dos Afetos (In the Realm of Affections), Berle firmly embraces earnestness, through starry-eyed Brazilian love songs, ambient vignettes, warm, home-cooked beats and gentle strokes of MPB genius.

“It’s an album that was built from my desire to find beauty”, Berle explains - his simple, graceful words mirroring the graceful simplicity in his music. But amongst the simplicity, the compositions, arrangements and productions on No Reino Dos Afetos tingle with nuance and detail.

On the contemporary R&B inspired lead single “Quero Dizer” - produced by Berle and longtime friend and collaborator Batata Boy - the swirling, lo-fi, kalimba and guitar-fronted beat is turned into a feel-good hit by the ingenuity of Berle’s honey-soaked vocal melody.

Powerfully intimate, “O Nome Do Meu Amor” (My Love’s Name) is a guaranteed tearjerker, with Berle’s stunning voice soaring over gently plucked acoustic guitar and the textural flutter of soft movement, as if we hear him writing the song in the moment.
Drawing upon a close-knit, collaborative scene of Maceió artists and musicians, (of which Berle and Batata Boy are vital members), Berle also recorded some of his friends songs on the album, including João Menezes’ “Até Meu Violao”, the album’s beautifully laid back sunshine soul opener, which has all the charm of early-70s João Donato.

Having cut his teeth in soft-rock group Troco em Bala, and more recently finding himself embedded in both Rio and Sao Paulo’s contemporary music scenes - collaborating with the likes of Ana Frango Eletrico, who took the photo for the album cover - No Reino Dos Afetos is as musically diverse as Bruno himself. It’s hazy indie rock (“É Preciso Ter Amor”), calming ambient and field recording (“Virginia Talk”) as well as Berle’s own take on West African High Life (“Som Nyame”).

Instantly recognisable as a truly special artist, Berle’s character fills every corner of the sound, which is unsurprising considering he played most of the instruments.

We know you're not supposed to because it's often said to be a cheap marketing gimmick but frankly, we love a good anonymous new producer to get wondering about.

And here we have just that in the form of Skat who we're told is "heavily influenced by East End Edits and Digwah Ltd" and opens a new series with a one-sided 12".

'Skat 01' is a worthy tech cut with minimal drums loops and brushed metal surfaces all wound up into a tight groove and overlaid with some rudely vocal raps. It's the sort of tune that brings a unique character to any set and is sure to get the crowd demanding its ID.

Transversales proudly presents the first LP reissue of “Les granges brûlées”, original soundtrack written and performed by Jean-Michel Jarre shortly after his work experience at G.R.M (Groupe de Recherches Musicales).

Probably one the first ever electronic music score, recorded with very scanty means: a VCS3 synthesizer, a Farsifa organ and three synchronized Revox tape recorders.

Director Jean Chapot, who understood immediately the interest in the gap between this hyper classical rural thriller and this groundbreaking music, let Jarre absolutely free to compose. Built up around several melodic leitmotifs, the score of “Les granges brûlées” allowed Jarre to pursue his personal research: to bridge the gap between experimental music and pop music. This deluxe reissue also contains the bonus track “Happiness Is a Sad Song” composed during Jarre's time at the G.R.M.

Multidisciplinary artist GAIKA returns with a new track titled “LADY” featuring bbymutha from his forthcoming album, Drift out on September 8th.

Thrashing drums and droned out guitars take immediate effect on “LADY” but it’s the two mavericks' electrifying chemistry that is the driving force of this track. Enlisting KIDÄ (Yves Tumor) on production with additional contributions from Azekel (Gorillaz) and Max Winter, alternative rock and audacious rap come crashing together as GAIKA and bbymutha flex their lyrical prowess, unapologetically expressing their devotion to their lovers on this twisted, feverish affair.

Newly signed to Big Dada Recordings, home to Roots Manuva, Yaya Bey, Kae Tempest, Brian Nasty and more, GAIKA jumps back into music with new invigoration after delving into work as a composer to unveil Drift - his most expansive work to date. The visionary invites listeners on a high-speed journey where love, pain, brutality and beauty collide to produce a vivid and provocative cinematic masterpiece. The sonic universe of Drift is the most stylistically accurate representation of GAIKA’s personal tastes to date, stitching musical influences past and present such as Prince, Wu Tang Clan, Massive Attack, John Coltrane, Pink Siifu and A$AP Rocky to land on a gritty, distorted sound pulsating with an unwavering, formidable energy that’s disruptive yet timeless.

Drift is 14 tracks of nostalgic escapism, a shape-shifting body of work with hip hop and club music cultures at its core, as those simply run through the veins of GAIKA. Analogue and retro in feeling, Drift’s psychedelic feel is formed by incorporating 90s grunge, dark wave, post-punk and alt-rock into its tapestry. It’s a representation of his heritage and environment, featuring calypso steel pans to gospel vocals, reverberating dub to frenetic rap and elements of sound design taken from recordings of the real world. GAIKA’s music transcends borders and his nomadic nature means he simultaneously belongs and doesn’t, his music cannot be confined to just one genre and this unique new record further cements him as one of the most progressive artists of our time, telling the tale of modern day renaissance man driving away from the economic hierarchy he doesn't believe in.

GAIKA endeavoured to create a waking dream by constant participation in communal art making, removing the separation between art and life, his imagination and community and breaking the boundary between real life and any spectacular representation of it. He set up a number of situational arts facilities in the heart of London including shows at ICA, 180 the Strand, Now Gallery and as the world reopened, created pop up galleries, studios, exhibitions and raves with the intention to enhance the experience of real life by dreaming. To achieve this coherently and authentically the process became akin to a form of psychological examination of memories made before music “mattered” to GAIKA - before becoming commodified, individualised and his name capitalised.

Drift became the term used to describe the creative happenings in these spaces and the name for the collective of people who made this record. GAIKA is the central writer and composer working closely with KIDÄ on production and a group of classically trained musicians with contributions from Azekel, Charlie Stacey, Brbko and The Narrator over an extended period of time where they recorded music late into the night, night after night.

Prisoners Of Love And Hate' is an offering to community, to desires that imprison and liberate, to people in all their divinity and ugliness. Apostille - aka Night School Records’ captain Michael Kasparis - presents is third album with a bang, a bursting ball of NRG, empathy and bristling living.
Like its predecessor 'Choose Life', 'Prisoners…' was recorded at Full Ashram Celestial Garden in Glasgow with Lewis Cook (Free Love) through 2022. A nine song treatise on pop music, trauma, ecstasy and the mundanities between the extremes, Kasparis takes on classic 80s synth pop, 90s house music, 00s trance, wistful balladry, 70s power pop. The thread that runs through the album is a boundless energy, an openness to the moment, to living
the pains and joys equally, open armed.

This is a place of no judgement, of possibility, challenge and comfort. The nine songs on 'Prisoners…' can be read as separate ruminations on the feelings and desires that imprison our experience. Through it all the narrator struggles against them, transported and fooled by love and longing, peering through the bars of anguish, flailing in a cell of emotions. 'Saturday Night, Still Breathing' breaks the album open with an invigorating scream and pounds into the night with a nod to Whigfield, Kasparis’ punk roots and house music. Over a thumping 909 kick and bassline, Kasparis pens a love letter to being with people, the collective energy of hearts in a room, thrumming together, making it through together. Written as private ritual magic, manifesting community during a time of isolation, it’s as if the party is the most important thing in the world. 'Rely On Me' imagines 80s Mute synth pop, Erasure fronted by Bruce Springsteen, romance doomed and forever perfect in the mind. 'Spit Pit' completes the opening triptych of fast paced rollercoasters, an ode to childhood forged out of change and discomfort told with a bold, epic production by Lewis Cook, AFX breakbeats, 160BPM kicks and a commanding vocal performance.

On 'People Make This City', Kasparis eases off the gas, lets the mist blowing in from the Clyde River blow over his version of Glasgow. A wistful ballad about small town gossip and coming through anger to leaving it all behind, it provides some shadow to the bright light of the vibrancy of the album. 'Natural Angel' owes much to 70s and 80s power pop, guitar melodrama, Thin Lizzy and Rick Springfield through the prism of co-dependence in relationships. It’s a theme that’s picked up in slow burner 'Nothing But Perfect', a hazy synth soul-inflected song about building your own mythology, constructing a dream to hide in, to hold on to. The most surprising track of the album, 'Summer of ’03' re-imagines the trance music of early noughties Europe into a lament for an eternal summer or as a fan once put it, “Meat Loaf with a donk on it.” A recognition that all ecstasy has tragedy laced within it, it’s a theme that is sewn throughout the LP and continued on the final song 'Feel Good (You Can Make Me)'. Referencing Shalamar’s 1982 mega hit by way of N-Trance’s piano riffs, the epic closer is riddled with heartbreak, vulnerability and power. It’s a testament to the new confidence in Kasparis’s songwriting, sure, but also to the enduring power of people to come together in mutual dependence and love. If ecstasy is always laced with tragedy, then 'Prisoners of Love and Hate' can always reach out between the bars to meet in the middle, the eternal now.

For his first album as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, 2021 International Chopin Competition winner Bruce Liu – “a pianist with a captivating musical personality” (Financial Times) – has compiled an enthralling survey of 200 years of French keyboard music, from Baroque to modern. The phenomenal young Canadian pianist has subtly adjusted the action of his instrument to highlight the differing musical styles. Gramophone’s reviewer acclaimed DG’s release of Liu’s Warsaw competition performances as “one of the most distinguished Chopin recitals of recent years, full of maturity, character and purpose”. The album’s title Waves alludes not only to the nature theme that runs throughout the programme, but also to the sheer spontaneity of Liu’s music-making.

Long regarded as one of the OG Heavyweights of the SBDM scene, KRAANIUM are the epitome of what Slamming Brutal Death Metal is supposed to be. Abhorrent lyrics, disgusting vocals and brutal cacophony... It is not so much a twist as it is a unique multiverse identity for Current Joys, as Nick Rattigan's set out to "capture this sonic moment and harken back to the way I first released music." The story of LOVE + POP begins with one of those house parties: the kind that bulldozes your home and, in its aftermath, leaves a wreckage that finds you flattened but also ready to be new. In that mess and mayhem, Rattigan watched Everybody's Everything, the documentary of Lil Peep, and recorded a cover of "walk away as the door slams". But the itch wasn't scratched, and what began as a moment of homage morphed into something bigger, deeper and more fundamental, a point where the seemingly haphazard - in his home, in Peep's process - opened Rattigan up to an entire creative space and a new approach to bending or even detonating genre. Crucially, all of this was recorded at home, in what Rattigan calls a "tribute to the process of creating" in a DIY space. And what began as a singular passion project unexpectedly grew into a uniquely collaborative record for Current Joys. "I've set out to make collaborative records before," Rattigan explains, "but they often end up totally me, with just a couple exceptions. But then this record gave me the opportunity to be extremely collaborative, to let other people write instrumental tracks, sending links around for people to mess with and weigh in on. I sat down to do credits and realized here were all these people and styles and they all came together and worked." LOVE + POP's cover art is an airbrush/spraypaint rendition of the Wild Heart album cover, which is itself a photo of Rattigan's grandparents kissing. It is sacred in some ways and shredded in others. "The Twits" wurde von der Band im Februar 2023 innerhalb von nur acht Wochen in einem provisorischen Heimstudio auf Mallorca aufgenommen und von Marta Salogni abgemischt. Nach einem Kinderbuch von Roald Dahl benannt, zeigt sich das Songwriting von bar italia in rauen, mystischen, ungebürsteten und gelegentlich düsteren Arrangements. Songs wie "my little tony" mit seinen harten Riffs und dem kathartischen Sound ist ein klassischer Indie-Banger für die große Bühne. In anderen Momenten wagt sich die Band auf bisher unbekanntes Terrain, auf dem sie eine hypnotische Dissonanz ihrer Stimmen schaffen. "Jelsy" zum Beispiel spielt sich wie ein Gespräch zwischen Freunden über wehmütigen, summenden Country-Blues ab, wobei die Stimmen abwechselnd tröstlich, ironisch und hoffnungslos sehnsüchtig sind. Der geschmeidige, langsam brennende Walzer "Twist" besticht durch seine nackte Lyrik und scheint jedes Bandmitglied zu einem individuellen Bekenntnis einzuladen. Während "Tracey Denim" von seinen kompakten 2-3-minütigen Songs lebte, besticht "The Twits" durch seine eher offenen und mitunter uferlosen Kompositionen. "glory-hunter" nimmt z.b. spielerische Wendungen, bevor es an einem völlig anderen Ort endet, als es begonnen hat. Das abschließende "bibs" ist ein seltener Fall, in dem alle drei im Einklang zu hören sind. Eine Prozession geradezu geisterhafter Akkorde mit einer zerreißenden Rückkopplung bildet den Abschluss des Albums. Das im Mai veröffentlichte Matador-Debüt "Tracey Denim" von bar italia wurde schnell zum Gesprächsthema der weltweiten Indieszene. Publikationen wie The Guardian ("eines der Alben des Jahres 2023 bisher"), The Times ("excellent debut album"), The Observer ("Artist To Watch"), NME ("a lasting impression that"s all of their own making"), The Quietus ("endlessly evocative") und Pigeons And Planes ("quickly establishing themselves as one of the most enticing upcoming bands") feierten das Album. Im Juni gaben bar italia ihr Live-Debüt in den USA mit fünf ausverkauften Konzerten in New York sowie vier in Los Angeles und auch ihre Debüt-Show in Berlin war binnen kürzester Zeit ausverkauft. Über einen der New Yorker Auftritte schrieb Brooklyn Vegan: "Live spielt die Band ganz natürlich und großartig auf, mit Songs wie "Punkt", "Changer" und "Nurse!" (...), die Post-Punk der frühen 80er mit Indie-Rock der 90er und einem Hauch Trip-Hop mischen".

1988 in Hamburg gegründet (und 1991 wieder aufgelöst), war die Kolossale Jugend neben OZSWMK und Cpt. Kirk eine der ersten maßgeblichen Bands, die der so genannten "Hamburger Schule" zugeordnet wurden. 1989 erschien beim Label L'age d'or die erste LP "Heile Heile Boches" und 1990 folgte das zweite Album "Leopard II". Die dritte LP des Boxsets enthält Raritäten (Sampler-Beiträge, Single-Versionen) und Aufnahmen eines bislang unveröffentlichten Live-Konzerts aus dem Forum Enger (22.9.1989). "Heile Heile Boches" erschien 1989, im Jahr des Mauerfalls. International gab es zwar Hip Hop, Crossover, Hardcore und Alternative-Punk; in Deutschland lediglich deren Simulation oder Imitation, und außer einem inzwischen längst redundanten, wenn auch unverwüstlichen Deutsch-Punk nur wenig, das in der Musik als Bollwerk gegen den neu aufkeimenden Nationalstolz hätte dienen können. Aber es gab die Kolossale Jugend. Seit jeher am reingrätschen, nerven, ständig sich austauschend, vorantreibend und völlig immun gegen Versuche der Politik, Wirtschaft und Volksgemeinschaft sie für die heraufbeschworene Pop Nation Deutschland zu vereinnahmen. Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin: die Wendezeit. Das zweite Album, 1990, wurde folgerichtig "Leopard II" betitelt. Mithin sind Musik und Text auch denkbar schlecht für eine groß angelegte Verwertung geeignet; sie passieren in einem irrwitzigen Tempo. Die Texte sind maßlos, schwer zu fassen und immer einen Schritt voraus. Scheinbar ohne Anfang und Ende prasseln und hämmern sie so gewaltig drauflos, wie die Band auf ihre Instrumente drischt. Wir hören, wie jemand denkt und seine Kollegen verschaffen ihm den musikalischen Nach- und Ausdruck, den das Denken in so intellektfeindlichen Zeiten damals wie heute verdient. Aber das hat mehr mit Rockmusik zu tun, als das eingangs erwähnte, auch wenn man damit glaubte, nah am Original zu sein, denn die Reduktion und die Leerstellen sind kolossal. Und doch stand die Kolossale Jugend - die Band, die vom Himmel fiel, weil sie aus keiner klar definierbaren Tradition kam - am Anfang von etwas Neuem. Als sie sich 1992 auflöste, konnten sich weitere Akteure in und außerhalb Hamburgs an neuen Referenzrahmen mit Überschriften wie "Halt's Maul Deutschland"* oder "What's so funny about L'Age Poly d'Or" ** orientieren. Pascal Fuhlbrügge gründete und verließ L'Age d'Or, machte danach Musik mit Erneuerbare Energien, Sand 11 oder 8, sowie für Theaterproduktionen. Heute entwickelt er neben der Musik eigene Theaterstücke und spielt sie auch. Christoph Leich war dann lange Schlagzeuger bei Die Sterne und ist heute in der Musikbranche im Bereich Logistik tätig. Klaus Meinhardt zeichnete das L'Age d'Or Logo, gestaltete die Jugend-Cover, war Gitarrist beim Heinz Krämer-Werner Hornig Sextett und arbeitet als Illustrator. Kristof Schreuf starb völlig überraschend am 9. November 2022, er war Bourgeois with Guitar, Autor, Sänger und Texter der Band Brüllen. Seine Texte u.a. für taz, Jungle World und die Süddeutsche Zeitung waren Ereignisse. Die vorliegende Wieder- und teilweise Neuveröffentlichung ist ihm gewidmet.

Nachdem sie die letzten 2 Jahre damit verbracht haben, das Vereinigte Königreich und Europa mit 3 ausverkauften Tourneen zu erobern, kehrten Dirty Honey nach Australien zurück, um ihr zweites Album "Can't Find The Brakes" mit dem Produzenten Nick DiDia (Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) aufzunehmen.

In den letzten Jahren war die Formation beständig auf Tournee, was zum ersten Besetzungswechsel führte: Anfang des Jahres ersetzte Jaydon Bean Corey Coverstone am Schlagzeug, dem das dauerhafte Reisen zu viel geworden war. Dieses Leben inspirierte sie aber auch zum Titel der neuen LP.

Hard-hitting, outspoken West Coast metalcore trio MUGSHOT has announced plans to release a new EP, "Cold Will," on November 3rd with their new label Pure Noise Records. The furious 5-track, neck-snapping record is an uninhibited commentary on sociopolitical travesties infecting the country, set to the tone of merciless rage and crushing riffs. Commenting on the EP, the band says: "'Cold Will' is crafted by the pains of life: Abuse, depression, manipulation, trauma, and other existential themes that present themselves as the rudder that directionally steers this record’s “ship.” Lyrical themes are met by and married with the crushing weight of dissonant riffs and frenetic drum patterns that further push the listener into this mental space of this record’s daunting thoughts and overall aggression. The Sunset Tree is the ninth studio album by Mountain Goats, released in 2005 by 4AD. The album"s songs revolve around the house John Darnielle grew up in and the people who lived there, including his mother, sister, stepfather, friends, and enemies. The Sunset Tree focuses on his childhood, and a recurring theme is domestic violence. Darnielle was backed by Peter Hughes, Franklin Bruno and Eric Friedlander & Alec Decarville. And the record was prodced by John Vanderslice.

Tallahassee is the seventh studio album by Mountain Goats and it was released in 2002. It"s the first Mountain Goats album to be released on 4AD. Tallahassee is the first record to feature what could be considered a full "band," with fuller instrumentation and a percussion section. John Darnielle was joined by the multiinstrumentalists Peter Hughes and Franklin Bruno.

Stillness is a myth. Consider concepts such as ”still water”, or ”still air” for that matter. Go to a restaurant, ask them for a glass of still water, hold it against the light and see where we’re at. Even though the water itself has been captured and imprisoned in the glass, it never stops breathing. It’s filled with tiny particles, dancing. Everything can be explained on a molecular level, but since we’re not scientists – and even if you happen to be – it’s the natural world of perception that moves me.

Still air is very similar. A hot summer’s day with zero wind feels completely still. It’s the closest I have felt to complete stillness. Or for a more urban adaptation, imagine the same vibe inside a normal apartment. In those moments, revelations and mind- blowing experiences can be had with experiments in stillness.
Try this: Just sit down for a minute on a sunny day, making sure there’s enough natural light. Do absolutely nothing. Try not to breathe for a bit. (If you need a mental anchor, you can play Cage’s 4’33” in your head but nothing else.) Watch the tiny dots of dust dancing :..’ ̈.:; ́ ́*°.,’:,. ̈ ̈ ̈ ̈:,.’
The movement is crazy, but the feeling of stillness comes from witnessing how subtle it is. In (perceived) complete stillness, every act of microscopic mobility seems to speak volumes. Yet, it feels both reassuring and oddly threatening that the stillness is never complete. What if we would need absolute stillness? Or is it just enough that we can perceive something as such? Extremes attract, so for both water and air, extraordinary movement is equally fascinating. That is also a luxury item of sorts. For us to enjoy a very ”loud” body of water or air, we need to be safe, in enough control of the situation. So when you are, it’s worthwhile to pay attention and take it all in.
A rapid flowing free with extreme strength and just barely in control. Look at that water go! No still water on this one, only ”sparkling”. A windy day when birds seem surprised how hard it is to fly, but in the end they make it. Trees bend but don’t break. The wind shows you its movement but doesn’t hurt you. It feels friendly, like a big clumsy dog that doesn’t quite understand its size.
It’s beautiful to be a guest of the elements, but not at the mercy of them. A new kind of dialogue forms.

Q&A with Sasu Ripatti:

1) Tell us something about the EP series ”Hide Behind the Silence”, what’s the idea and what can we expect?

Exploration of inaction. Of many kinds. In arts and in personal life, or at bigger and more serious levels. Questioning myself as a human being as well as an artist. Acknowledging the growing activism all around, and the very clear need for it, and how it reflects my own inaction.
Musically speaking, after Rakka, Isoviha and Speed Demon, I finally found some relief, but more importantly lost the need to go musically ever more outward and intensive. I felt quite strongly certain periods/moods from the past and they made me revisit some musical ideas or states of mind I was exploring early on.
It’s about live moments being captured, not much premeditation or editing. More intuitive and raw, even though the end result (to me) feels and sounds quite introspective and calm. It’s not very ambitious. Momentary and reflective.

2) Your music doesn’t sound very silent. Does it come from somewhere behind the silence?

Oh, this time to me it sounds quite quiet and playing with space if not silence. I don’t know what’s actually behind silence, but I think silence is the source of everything. We just don’t understand it yet.

3) What kind of thoughts or experiences gave inspiration to this series?

Writing this in Nov ’22, it’s not a stretch to say the world has been really unwell. Sometimes, like Mika Vainio put it, the world eats you up. I feel a bit like that. And I try to hide in my studio and stay away from it all, but it’s getting harder by the day. I’ve been questioning myself and thinking if what us artists are doing is worth anything, and whether it’s just a selfish thing I’ve been doing for the past 25 years, running away from everything. I haven’t come to a conclusion yet.

4) Is it easy for you to be in silence, or around silence?

Absolutely. I not only hide behind silence but I also love silence. It’s only since I started going back to nature as a grown-up person that I sensed and was enveloped by silence, true silence. I have begun to appreciate it a lot. I think all the people should spend more time in silence.

Manche würden es eine Fantasiewel" nennen. Das belgische Trio Brutus nennt es "Unison Life" - eine Formulierung, die auch den Titel ihres dritten Studioalbums ziert. "Unison Life" handelt von all den Dingen, die einen von vornherein zermürben. Es geht um die Abscheulichkeit, den Schmerz und die mutigen Taten, mit denen man das alles übersteht. Das Album beginnt mit einem Porträt der Zufriedenheit und entwickelt sich von dort aus weiter, bis es in die Schlacht zieht und die Frage stellt, was wirklich zählt. Als 2015 das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum (Konkord) von DIE BUBEN IM PELZ erschien, wirbelten sie damit viel Staub auf. Denn die beiden Gründungsmitglieder David Pfister und Christian Fuchs (beide vom Radiosender FM4) wagten etwas Riskantes. Die Buben übersetzten das ikonische Debütalbum von Velvet Underground komplett ins Wienerische. Wechselten die legendäre Andy Warhol-Banane auf dem Cover mit einer Wurst aus - und übertrugen die Atmosphäre des New York von 1967 in das Wien von 2015. Düstere Parallelen wurden ausgelotet. Flirrende Gitarren zum Klingen gebracht. Spirituelle Verwandtschaften mit Lou Reed, John Cale und Nico zelebriert. "History Books" ist der Titelsong des ersten Gaslight Anthem-Albums seit neun Jahren.

Bruce Springsteen begleitet sie auf dem Titelsong. "Da ist definitiv ein kleines Augenzwinkern drin", sagt Brian Fallon der Associated Press über "History Books" und fügt hinzu, dass "einige Leute uns abgeschrieben haben", weil wir so sehr nach dem Boss klingen. "Es ist wie 'Jetzt schreib das ab'," sagt er. "Wir haben die Zustimmung des Bosses!

Prolific producer Stu Bangas is back with a new collection of hard-hitting collaborations on Death Wish (Part II), the much anticipated sequel to the 2021 original. The project finds the Boston beatsmith rocking with some of his favorite emcees of all time as well as familiar names who always seem to bring their best work to his instrumentals.

For Stu, it’s an honor to work with the likes of Ras Kass and Psycho Les (of the Beatnuts). He made the connections while creating the phenomenal Empires LP with Eric Bobo (of Cypress Hill), and it led to the bangers you hear on Death Wish (Part II). The track with Ras, “Sus,” is an equally hilarious and hardcore takedown of weak-willed phonies, while Psycho Les teams with Celph Titled for the gangster-but-lighthearted “Y’all Clowns.”

Joe Sutkowski (Dirt Buyer)'s new album is a documentation of making it to the other side. Sutkowski grew up in New Jersey, and although he lives in Brooklyn now, he remains " an emo kid at heart ," garnering inspiration from bands like My Chemical Romance and Muse, the latter of whose theatrical, dramatic performances inspired the band's own vocal-forward, soaring takes. Initially working together as a duo while Sutkowski and Ruben Radlauer (Model/Actriz) were at school in Berklee, the band's self-titled 2019 debut album was recorded on an IPhone in their practice room on just drums and guitar, and the quietly striking, nuanced stylings earned them accolades far beyond the " fake record label " the two made up to originally release their music. The band's new album, Dirt Buyer II , was recorded in February 2020, and represents a foray into heavier material that marks a deeper shift for the band. Now working as a trio, Sutkowski is flanked by Tristan Allen on bass and Mike Costa on drums, a fellow Berklee grad who cut his teeth playing in bands across Boston including past collaborations with Sutkowski. Half-recorded while the band was on tour with Surf Curse, the record finds Sutkowski reaching out for places, people and beliefs to ground him. Throughout the album he attempts to wrap his head around the idea of fate and how you can brush up against other people and then leave them behind. The songs themselves play with this concept of light and dark intertwined. Oscillating between urgency and cathartic release and more stripped-back elegies, Sutkowski faces the reality that while the people he'd rather forget can still live on through music, he is able to move on at the same time. Half-recorded in his mother and uncle's upstate house where he turned the living room into a studio, he contemplates the beauty and disaster around him - all refracted through visceral visual imagery of how the physical earth meets the unknown to converge in something greater than ourselves. Eine neue Band aus der aufblühenden norwegischen Metal Szene. Sänger David Rosario war auf der Suche nach jemandem, mit dem er seine Songs aufnehmen konnte. Die Chemie mit Gitarrist Stein Hjertholm und Schlagzeuger Per-Helge Bruvoll war perfekt , also nahmen sie ein 3-Song-Demo auf und die Idee von Rozario war geboren. Das war kurz vor der Pandemie und natürlich waren alle Aktivitäten sehr eingeschränkt. Sie nutzten ihre Zeit und konzentrierten sich auf das Songwriting und die Suche nach der Richtung der Band, wobei alle drei Songwriting-Beiträge beisteuerten. Rozario tat sich dann mit dem Produzenten Trond Holter (Wig Wam, Holter, Jorn etc.) zusammen. Thee Headcoats were mainly Billy Childish (Git/Vox) Bruce Brand (Drums) and Johnny Johnson (bass), they formed in 1989 after Billy’s previous band Thee Mighty Caesers gave up the ghost. By 1992 they had already released something like 6 albums and 15 singles one of which was catalogue number Damgood1, a split single with Thee Headcoatees. During the ’90′s I must have seen them 60 times, I even went over to Japan with them in 1993. There was something really natural about them, no bullshit. We did the ‘We hate The Fuckin’ NME’ single after journalist Johnny Cigarettes walked out of their gig in Archway after insisting that he should get in for free as he was from the NME and then reviewing Thee Headcoatees by saying there were no girls in the band (he'd left before they came onstage!!). Lots more releases followed including the great ‘In Tweed We Trust’ album. Thee Headcoats carried on touring and releasing records in every corner of the world until mid 2000 when they called it a day

Known for being part of the INNA DE YARD family for almost 20 years, Jamaican singer extraordinaire DERAJAH is a major figure in Kingston music scene. He is the bridge between the old and new generations, passing the knowledge from the elders to the youths. We are delighted to present his latest effort in collaboration with A-class studio band The 18th Parallel: ‘PROSPERITY’. The story towards the creation of this album also needs to be shared. As Fruits Records members were in Jamaica on tour and to record their first projects, they crossed Derajah paths a couple times without getting a chance to work together. But this was enough to set a strong foundation to a relationship that goes way beyond the musical side only. A few years after this meeting, one phone call only was enough to start the process. The rest is pure magic! Spontaneity, trust and loyalty became the guidelines for the creation of this gem, which stand out of time and space, and aim to carry on its path anyone seeking for knowledge, love and prosperity.

Lucky number 17? You better believe it. We here at Brown Acid have been scouring the highways and byways of America for even more hidden stashes of psych/garage/proto-punk madness from the so-called Aquarian Age. There’s no flower power here, though—just acid casualties, rock stompers and major freakouts. As always, the songs have been officially licensed, and all the artists get paid. Kicking off this trip, Grapple’s “Ethereal Genesis” is a heavy psych gem from 1969 written by J. Bruce Svoboda, a.k.a. Jay Bruce, formerly of The Hangmen and The Five Canadians (who were actually the same San Antonio band). The latter’s 1966 garage favorite “Writing on the Wall” has been endlessly covered, but Grapple were never heard from again. With a guitar riff that blatantly rips off Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath,” Image’s mostly instrumental lysergic obscurity “Witchcraft ’71” (originally unveiled that very year) also boasts a horror-movie organ intro, a voodoo drum break and some championship chanting. Private press heads might recall late Image drummer John Beke from his ’80s reemergence with country rockers Crossfyre. Stone Hedge were a seven-piece rock band out of Michigan with a penchant for Creedence and anthropomorphism. “Smokey Bear” is their 1972 tribute to the official mascot of the U.S. Forest Services—not to mention the A side of their sole single—and it recalls the kind of organ-drenched swamp jam that soundtracked many a Burt Reynolds flick back in the day. If you think being a Southern rock band from Milwaukee doesn’t make much sense, that’s probably why Crossfire changed their sound along with their name—to Bad Boy—after signing with United Artists. Bad Boy’s severely underappreciated second album, Back To Back, is a 1978 hard rock jewel, but you can hear their boogie-woogie roots on this rare 1975 single. With a band name like Primevil and song title like “Too Dead To Live,” you probably expect some gnarly proto-metal riffage. Instead, you a get a harmonica-drenched, soul-infused rock rave-up from 1972. Primevil would release their sole LP two years later: Entitled Smokin’ Bats at Campton’s, it’s a reference to their trusty singer, harp player (and bat smoker?), Dave Campton. Brown Acid regulars already know Pegasus from their appearance with “The Sorcerer” on our Seventh Trip. “Ready to Rave” is the flipside to that 1972 single, in which they explain how they like their whiskey cold and their women hot. It’s another killer glimpse of what might have been if these one-and-done Baltimore hard rockers had been able to keep it together. One of two obscure singles released by Texas musician Bobby Mabe in 1969 (the other appears under the name The Outcasts), “I’m Lonely” delivers a heavy dose of vocal soul to the otherwise psych-garage presentation. Fans of fellow Houstonians the Moving Sidewalks—whom Bobby and his Outcasts may well have gigged with—will especially dig this one. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, may not be known as a cultural mecca, but they did give us Truth & Janey. This deadly hard rock trio delivered their holy grail full-length, No Rest for the Wicked, back in 1976. “Around and Around” is a Chuck Berry cover that originally appeared on a 1973 single the band released under the earlier name Truth. Originally released in 1973, “High School Letter” is the debut single from San Diego rock squad Glory. This infectious bonehead cruncher features future Beat Farmer Jerry Raney and the original rhythm section of Iron Butterfly in bassist Greg Willis and drummer Jack Pinney. Glory is what they got up to after their former bandmates left for L.A.’s garden of Eden. “Jack the Ripper” is a mercilessly bootlegged Cleveland classic from 1978 with a serrated punk edge and vocals that recall Mick Blood of Aussie savages the Lime Spiders. Or maybe it’s the other way around—the Lime Spiders formed the year after Strychnine carved off this lethal paean to the infamous Whitechapel slasher of olde.

Gegründet 1980 in München, spielt die Band noch immer in Original-Besetzung: Justin Hoffman, Thomas Meinecke, Michaela Melián und Wilfried Petzi. Seit 1990 gibt es als fünftes festes Mitglied den Schlagzeuger Carl Oesterhelt. Von Anfang an verstand sich die Band in der Tradition von Art School Bands: nicht Virtuosität, sondern Haltung spielt die zentrale Rolle. F.S.K. machen Musik über Musik, was sowohl ihre eigenen Stücke als auch zahlreiche Cover-Versionen betrifft, die besonders seit dem häufigen Auftreten und Aufnehmen in U.K. (für John Peel) und U.S.A. (mit David Lowery) in den 1980ern und 1990ern ins Programm genommen wurden. Das neue Studio Album, TOPSY-TURVY, greift in mancherlei Hinsicht auf Arbeitsweisen aus vergangenen Band-Perioden zurück. So gibt es, wie auf den ersten Alben, Streicher- und Bläser-Overdubs, die mitunter ins spätromantisch Orchestrale lappen, aber auch improvisatorischer Natur sind (Cello, vierhändiges Klavier, Trompete). Die acht Stücke wurden in dem von der befreundeten Band The Notwist zur Verfügung gestellten Alien Research Center in Live Takes produziert und von Mario Thaler gemischt.

Since forming in 1999, Suishou No Fune (A Ship Of Crystal), the vehicle for long-term musical collaborators Pirako Kurenai (guitar, voice) and Kageo (guitar), have been one of the most compelling groups in the Japanese underground. Their long, languorous songs are devastating in their simplicity, as though the gently sung ballads of the Velvet Underground’s third album were re-scored by the legendary Japanese free-rock gang, Les Rallizes Denudes. Their new album, 風は春、空は虹、愛は波間に隠れている (The wind is spring -. There is a rainbow in the sky - Love is hiding in the waves.), documents a live performance from May 2021, at Silver Elephant, where the duo are joined by Matsuedo Hideo on bass, and Mark Anderson (Greymouth, Mysteries Of Love) on drums.
The duo of Pirako Kurenai and Kageo have come a long way since their early performances and self-released CD-Rs – in the intervening decades, they’ve released albums on P.S.F., Holy Mountain, Important, Archive, 8mm and Essence, amongst others, each album another manifestation of the duo’s ever-changing same. You can hear them patiently toiling over these beauteous songs, with their choral melodies and lush waves of tonology, Kageo’s guitar radiating bejewelled chimes and dense passages of texture, pulling the songs into a black hole of quietude and sadness. And as Kurenai once told journalist Phil Kaberry, “Suishou No Fune’s songs, sounds and words are often born from heartrending feelings like sadness and pain”.
The wind is spring. There is a rainbow in the sky. Love is hiding in the waves begins with the deep blues of “Cherry”, a drawn-out drift-song that pivots on a most elegant two-chord mantra, as Kurenai sings, siren-like, amidst the sheets of noise Kageo peels from six strings. There’s something painterly about the duo’s playing here, and indeed, Kageo was a painter and Kurenai was a doll maker and watercolour painter when they met in the late ‘90s. On the flip side, a spare, spaced-out improvisation, “A Rainbow Is Floating”, acts as a prelude to “Endless Descent”, one of Suishou No Fune’s most remarkable songs, where a mesmeric guitar line endlessly coils and twines around the flicker and toll of Kurenai’s hypnotic one-chord strum. It’s a bruised, quietly desperate ending to an album that has an achroamatic air, as though the songs were transmitting to a cabal of lost spirits.
