A quick scan of the world’s favourite crowdsourced discography reveals that Sonic Youth co-founder Lee Ranaldo was not a total stranger to crackling electric experimentation in the years following his songwriting turns of the 20-teens. Yet »The System«, ingeniously culled and sequenced from Ranaldo’s soundtrack work for Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema’s ›eco-doc‹ of the same name, nonetheless feels like a reawakening. Quietly released in a vastly different (and much more ›filmic‹) form by Doxy Music/Riva Media Records in 2025, this LP reimagines and reconfigures the initial release, including unreleased material written and recorded for the film, to lend it new stature as both a return to drone-improv form and a reunion with introspective Downtown angst.

Given the state of the world, it’s not surprising that the film Ranaldo scores – a documentary on three climate activists bruising their fists on the black iron prison of techno-fascist deathkultur – is a study in despair and futility. But rather than wallowing in navel-gazing doom and gloom, the film documents the unstoppable spirit that has animated human resistance since the time of the Pharaohs.

As it turns out, the gorgeous scope of Lee Ranaldo’s guitar palette is a perfect manifestation of the hope and despair that animates the film. But like other high-water marks in the guitar-centric soundtrack canon – the high plains raga of Bruce Langhorne’s »Hired Hand«, Neil Young’s sparse and ghostly solo transmissions on »Dead Man«, or the monolithic mantras of Popol Vuh’s »Nosferatu« – its devotion to spectral gestures and meditative song forms launches it firmly outside of the OST orbit into a universe fully its own.

It might seem like a long journey from the Lower Manhattan rhythmic grime of the album’s opener »Tajikistan (Nice to Meet You)« (reminiscent of guitar opuses like Robert Quine and Jody Harris’s »Escape«) to the ringing cowboy chords of the final track, but the narrative logic of the LP pulls the listener along as solidly as a pack horse. As the LP unwinds, and collaborators like Jim Jarmusch, cellist Leila Boudreil, Yeah Yeah Yeahs snare shaman Brian Chase, and guitarist Yonatan Gat take their places, new vistas unfurl: the ritualistic thrum of »Berlin Blockade«, the haunted overtone palaces of »Bergelmir«, and the cavernous acoustic strumming of »Instruments of Violence«. It all winds up with the high lonesome standard »Cool Water«, each unhurried note trailing off into long-tail reverb, layers of shifting vocal harmonies pulling everything skyward – a hopeful note in an album where existential dread never lurks too deeply below the surface.

In the end, »The System« functions both as a film score and a hallucinatory (mostly) instrumental guitar record, revealing a sensibility not too often spotted in the 21st century – a liminal space where the song, the jam, and the meditation merge into a blurred whole. »The System«’s expansive fabric, emerging from a collective sound circling around Ranaldo’s signature tones, envelops and ampl amplifies the contributions of its community of creators – the perfect antidote to narcissistic despair. Much like the subjects of the film light the way towards intra-generational resistance, the music of »The System« reveals a path through gathering darkness. The world could be yours if you follow.

Fidel Kato is a producer based in Rome, Italy. In its sound we hear reminiscences of the boom hip-hop mixed with Latin jazz and today's Lo-Fi trends. In his upcoming full-length “Black Pepper” his productions are enriched by the presence of live instrumentation. A year after the release of Adriatique’s debut LP, ‘Nude’, Afterlife presents a seven-track remix package to breathe new life into the originals.

The album found Adriatique, the duo of Adrian Shala and Adrian Schweizer, explore a more downtempo, contemplative sound than they were known for. Its profound musicality makes rich source material for a set of dancefloor interpretations, which Tale Of Us have curated together with Adriatique for the label’s 30th release.

First is Tale Of Us and Mathame’s version of ‘Mystery’, where they extend the blissful tones and Jono McCleery’s vocals into a euphoric dancefloor cut. Next Solomun brings some electro flair to the vocoder-led title track, before Kobosil toughens up ‘Tachykardia’ with a warehouse-ready kick drum and twists the serene voice of Delhia De France. Rampa is another new name for Afterlife Recordings; he gives ‘Nude’ a slick, techy overhaul to complete the vinyl release in fine style.

The digital release contains an Agents Of Time epic in their remix of ‘Buchla’s Dreaming’, Johannes Brecht’s shimmering take on ‘Ray Reincarnation’ and a chopped-up remix of Mystery by Isoleé. A diverse, tastefully-executed remix EP which does justice to the quality of Adriatique’s album.

The group's goal was, "Let's go back to melodic tunes, let's be more of a proper rock band," Hozie explains. Sonically, the band aimed for "this late '80's/ early 90's Stone Roses- meets- Janes Addiction thing, with more riffing and guitar solos." Deathbomb Arc has a long history of bringing unlikely artists together for collaborations. From True Neutral Crew featuring Grammy winner Daveed Diggs (clipping.), SB The Moor, and members of Ratsmagick to the Arc Mountain album which paired artsts from the Deathbomb and Hausu Mountain rosters including Fire-Toolz (WARP) and They Hate Change (Jagjaguar). Now Deathbomb is excited to share this surprise crew release from BBBBBBB, Fatboi Sharif, and Ratsmagick, entitled 'Christmas in Sodom'.
All three acts come together for the title track, and then contribute solo efforts to expound on the dark absurdist themes in their own manner, providing a deconstruction of how all the styles were combined.
The duo of BBBBBBB are leaders of the underground electronic hardcore scene Japan, often playing alongside their peers and collaborators, Dos Monos. BBBBBBB released 'Positive Violence' on Deathbomb Arc last year and will release their followup with the label this coming fall in conjunction with their 2nd tour of the UK/EU.
Fatboi Sharif's most recent full lengths are an impressive one-two punch released by Deathbomb Arc and then Backwoodz. Sharif returns to the EU/UK this Sept, after a special appearance at the Clipping. curated 'Splendor & Misery' fest in New York in Aug.
Relative newcomers, the Philadelphia based Ratsmagick, are masterminded by Dennis Martinelli of Knifeplay. This loose 7ish piece group includes Deathbomb Arc founder Brian Miller of Foot Village (Fat Cat) as one of their two, dueling drummers. Outside of Knifeplay's extensive touring schedule, Dennis has found time to finish a Ratsmagick full length due on Deathbomb this winter.

Wie langjährige Fans wahrscheinlich wissen, nimmt Teenage Fanclub jedes Album an einem neuen Ort auf, damit die einzigartige Atmosphäre dieses Ortes die Musik beeinflussen kann. Great Bernera war ihr bislang abgelegenster Aufnahmeort, was der Band half, sich auf die Arbeit zu konzentrieren, sie aber auch in einen Zustand der Ehrfurcht versetzte, da sie von der tosenden See und antiken Ruinen umgeben waren. DINTE presents a collection of southern gospel sides from late 1940s to mid 1950s capturing the post-WWII departure from rural folk & shape-note singing traditions that had previously defined the music, to quartets and vocal harmony groups embracing of driving, uptempo boogie-woogie rhythms and spirituals borrowed from the black church. Meticulously transferred and restored from the original 78 RPM and transcription discs by collector James Zurek

Scottish musician Kay Logan (aka Helena Celle) self-released the prescient collection of oddball aleatoric bangers "Copy Music" in 2021, before pulling it from circulation. With the help of London imprint SWIMS, this cult album is now remastered and available on vinyl for the first time, under the new name "Endless Waltz". This will be the final Helena Celle album.

Raised on a diet of industrial queer pioneers Coil and Throbbing Gristle, occultish physics (John Dee, Aleister Crowley) and Frank Zappa, Kay's work has toyed and probed at the fringes of outsider art and technology for over ten years. Her 2016 album "If I Can't Handle Me At My Best..." established Celle's unique sonic language of unrepeatably gnarled techno, coaxed from a bewildering array of disintegrating midi controllers, Markov chains, and whatever else came to hand.

"Endless Waltz" pursues this formula to its bizarre conclusion: 18 fever loops of algorithmically crumpled dance music, pulled through a cheese cloth of obscure '90s computer game palettes and pop froth wordplay. Some of these delirious vignettes evoke a rudimentary AI regurgitating Captain Beefheart scores. Others, as one fan put it, are "sort of like if 'Commercial Album'-era Residents did an album on Rephlex". Enjoy the trip.

Almost Starlight is the extraordinary new album by Jem Finer (hurdy-gurdy) and John Matthias (violin). Produced by Jay Auborn and recorded in a Medieval Church, deep in the Devon countryside, in the Summer of 2025, the music is suffused with light, heat and the natural acoustics of the space.

The album defies categorisation; forced to pigeon hole it the nearest approximation would be ‘modern-classical’ but this ignores its myriad influences and explorations which encompass inspiration from Arvo Pärt through Terry Riley to Can via Delius, Alice Coltrane and a subtle reimagining of electronic music played purely with acoustic instruments, bending and shaping their possibilities in surprising and unexpected directions.

Jay Auborn plays cello on a number of the compositions and his production opens up and expands the music through a skilled and imaginative use of space, paying homage to the atmosphere of the church; ‘the sound evolved… chasing the imagined acoustics of that church in my mind; a place for worshipping light with sound.’

Almost Starlight will be released on the 4th September by Touch, available as CD, vinyl, cassette and on streaming platforms.

Jem Finer

Since studying computer science in the 1970s, Jem Finer has worked in various fields, including photography, film, experimental and popular music, sound recording, sculpture and installation.

Much of his work relates to systems, extended processes and extremes of scale and includes Longplayer, a musical composition repeating once every 1000 years, and the Gurdy and Hurdy stones, ancient rocks set upright in fields in East Sussex and Gloucestershire with Jimmy Cauty. Their work together includes a band, The Standing Stones, whose most recent release is Twa Sisters, featuring Iona Zajac and Daragh Lynch.

He was a founder member of The Pogues, with whom he has played, written and recorded since 1981.

Recent music revolves around a fascination with the hurdy-gurdy and includes hrdy-grdy, a cassette released by Benedict Drew’s Thanet Tape Centre. His latest collaboration, with John Matthias, Almost Starlight, will be released by Touch in September 2026.

John Matthias

Since studying Theoretical Physics in the late 1980s and 1990s, John has created music and sound in many forms, including for installation, popular music, music for film, for dance and orchestra.

Much of John’s work plays with the physics of complex systems but he is also greatly influenced by stories and song. John has collaborated with Matthew Herbert, Stanley Donwood, Jay Auborn, Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Nick Ryan and many others to create music with a variety of textures and sonorities. He is particularly interested in simplicity and form and how context informs the way music sounds.

His latest collaboration, with Jem Finer, Almost Starlight, will be released by Touch in September 2026.

EM Records is proud to present the first new album release in 25 years from Australia's Sheriff Lindo, dubmaster of the Southern Hemisphere.
His "Ten Dubs That Shook The World" EM1119CD/LP, released in 1988, has been growing in stature since its release, supported by its re-issue on EM Records, and in the meantime the Sheriff has been working steadily, deep-local style, honing his skills with the Australian sound systems Firehouse Sound and Earthlink Sound. The tracks on "Aftershock Dubs", recorded between 1990 and 2005, while never officially released, have been played as dub plates at sound system parties, proved movers, tested in the heat of action. Recorded at Lindo's 4/5 Studios, these specials were chosen by Japanese sound system savants Takuto Kuratani (Ruv Bytes) and Atsushi Muneshige (Touch the Sky/Corner Stone Music) from a cornucopia of goodness supplied by Sheriff Lindo, mastered by Kuratani for maximum impact. EM Records' first-ever Dancehall release is available on vinyl and CD, with two bonus tracks on the CD. One track features the vocals of Ras Roni; all tracks feature the experience-forged Dub sense of the Sheriff. More than a quarter-century of love, knowledge and soul-science has been distilled here. Sahana Naresh singt auf drei Songs, darunter »Pambu Mookan Uncle« und »Sa Re Ga Ma Pa«. In all seiner kaleidoskopischen Bildkraft und rauschhaften Fabulierfreudigkeit hat »Moondram Sevi« etwas Cineastisches – und auch das für Keshavara typische babylonische Sprachgewirr aus Deutsch, English, Tamil & Gibberish regiert wieder.
Bei Keshavara versteht sich die Sprache als Musik, während die Musik sich als Sprache versteht. Und mag diese Musik auch noch so filmisch daherkommen, so bleibt sie doch immer tanzbar: »Moondram Sevi« (Tamil für »das dritte Ohr«) ist Kopfkino für die Füße.

CODE, das kommerziell erfolgreichste Album der elektronischen Pioniere Cabaret Voltaire aus Sheffield, ist endlich wieder erhältlich – nach jahrelanger Vergriffenheit.
Das ursprünglich 1987 veröffentlichte achte Studioalbum der Band wurde von den Originalbändern durch Denis Blackham neu remastert, der seit über 20 Jahren sämtliche Alben von Cabaret Voltaire gemastert oder remastert hat. Die Neuauflage erscheint bei Mute und präsentiert das originale Artwork in restaurierter Form.
Gemeinsam produziert mit Dub-Ikone Adrian Sherwood, markiert CODE einen mutigen Schritt in Richtung Synth-Pop und mechanischem Funk. Es war das letzte Album von Cabaret Voltaire, das mit einem großen Produktionsbudget entstand und dabei dennoch kompromisslos glaubwürdig blieb. Mit den Singles „Don't Argue“ und „Here to Go“, die beide Charterfolge feierten, zählt es zu den Höhepunkten im Schaffen der Band.
Der Albumtitel verweist auf ein Thema, das damals von großer Aktualität war und heute relevanter denn je erscheint: die zunehmende Durchdringung des menschlichen Lebens durch Technologie, Computer und Programmierung. Für Cabaret Voltaire stand CODE dabei sinnbildlich für Kontrolle – nicht nur im kreativen Prozess des Musikmachens, sondern auch im Hinblick auf gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Machtstrukturen vor dem Hintergrund einer Ära des Überflusses.
Aufgenommen wurde das Album im bandeigenen Western Works Studio in Sheffield. Adrian Sherwood war bereits in der Vorproduktion beteiligt, bevor die Aufnahmen für den Mix in die Red Bus Studios nach London verlegt wurden. CODE dokumentiert eine Band auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer kreativen und kommerziellen Schaffenskraft.
Diese Wiederveröffentlichung wurde 2019 gemeinsam mit Richard H. Kirk begonnen. Nach seinem viel zu frühen Tod wurde das Projekt anhand seiner Notizen und in enger Abstimmung mit Stephen Malinder sowie dem Nachlass von Richard H. Kirk vollendet – eine würdige Hommage an sein außergewöhnliches Vermächtnis.
