Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc - Ritual

Mr Bongo

PopJazzWorld MusicLatin

Belgium, not the first place you'd think of when it comes to Latin or Afro funk. Yet one of the greatest records to blend both styles came from the small northern European country, masterminded by Nico Gomez and his Afro Percussion Inc.

Ritual was originally released in 1971 on the Dutch label Omega International (Gomez was born in Holland before moving to Belgium in the late 40s) and is being reissued by Mr Bongo in 2013, bringing its blazing funk grooves to both new ears and those already tuned in to this masterpiece's legacy.

Across its 11 tracks Ritual delivers the kind of production, arrangement and musicianship that rightfully belong in a dictionary next to the definition of professional. Gomez' band was tight and they knew it, showing it off on their covers of Perez Prado's 'Caballo Negro' and 'Lupita' by injecting the originals with a deep funk that blends both Afro and Latin influences. On 'Samba De Una Nota So' and 'El Condor Pasa', another pair of covers, they switch to soulful downtempo with mesmerising ease. The title cut remains one of the album's highlights, a devastating dancefloor groove with horns to match that has aged beautifully and was heavily sampled by Liquid People for 'The Dragon'. 'Pa! Pa! Pa! Pa!' adds touches of rock with fuzzy guitars for one of the album's headier experiences.

repressed ! Memoria has the pleasure to collaborate with one of the most established artists in Europe for her 15th release. The Parisian - Berliner DJ /producer Okain, after his very successful releases on various acclaimed labels such as Tsuba Records, Quartz Rec and Bpitch Control, joins Memoria with an EP entitled Welcome to the Hood.

Okain's music was incarnated in legendary Parisian clubs, home of some of France's finest inspirations. However, his fervent fascination with hip-hop, soul and jazz has highly contributed to his fresh dance floor creations.

The Frenchman has really received great admiration from the crowd all over the world with his intensive touring in Europe, USA, South America, Japan and China. Until this very moment, Okain has played at the biggest clubs like Cocorico, Fabric, the Rex Club and Watergate to name a few.

For this EP, his groovy upbeat music, diced with bits of old school flavor, stayed once again true to house and techno based roots. Samuel's productions explore the deeper side of tech house, with classic grooves and modern sound design that stands out due to its originality.

Welcome to the Hood (A Side) and Hot Garonne (B Side) really do speak for themselves, both of which flow well throughout the night, the second, slightly faster and darker than the first. The strings in B1 are unexpected; and bring a completely different feel to the track giving it real character and charm.

HouseVocalClubTech

Brodanse´s 'Danse Club Records' returns with another 90`s New Jersey gem reworked for 2013 with remix duties this time going to Just Be, Lula Circus & Chubby Dubz ... Danse Club Records, the label started by DJ/production sibling duo Brodanse has made a sterling start so far with releases of classic 90`s US house cuts remixed by the likes of Matt Tolfrey, Oliver $, Moodymanc & Brodanse themselves.

The reaction has been outstanding at a time where there is an obvious embracing of all things nineties and DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, Maxxi Soundsytem, Seth Troxler, Huxley & Dusky have been queuing up to lend their backing. For their latest release Danse Club look once again to New Jerseys historic shores, this time picking up an old record from US soul house duo The Burrell Brothers and drafting in three hot production acts to rework this much loved tune.
To start the package we have the original "club dub" version, giving an insight into the records history with it`s mid nineties feel and production still standing up wonderfully.

The first of the remixes sees Crosstown Rebels and Get Physical artist Just Be AKA Matthew Bushwaka deliver his"Insomniac mix",
a bumping slice of underground house music that marries a bass driven groove, organic percussion and subtle melodic elements with snippets of the vocal to supreme effect.

Next up we have Italian production duo Lula Circus whose releases for the likes of Culprit and Noir have been creating quite a stir. Here they deliver a brilliant rework of "Non Stop" in the shape of a deep old school house workout that makes the most of the soulful vocals with its simplistic, hypnotic backing. With its timeless quality, this mix is certain to be mainstay in DJ boxes for months and years to come.

The penultimate version sees the excellent Chubby Dubz offer up an outstanding mix that cuts and pastes the original parts in a raw house style. Closing the package there is a bonus dub of Just Be`s Insomniac mix that rounds things off nicely. This is another winning package from the Danse-Club label and with original artist material from Brodanse in the pipeline alongside further remix packages there is much to look forward to.

Unxpozd presents the 4th project from Dj Aakmael, 'Aak of Noise EP', giving you a straight up dance floor heater from the start! Up first is 'Just a Track pt 4' for the vocal heads, featuring classic vocal snippets that are sure to heat up any room large or small. 'Lush' is on the more chill side of the groove, giving listeners that warm, deep fuzzy feeling with a hard kick and smooth bass that matches the flow with ease. On the flip, 'Untitled 81' is an old-school style, Aakmael gives us a nostalgic sounding piece of art that also has nice dance floor potential. Closing the project is 'Soul of a Woman', that originally was a vocal track, however, now screwed and chopped as Aakmael decides to share this gem with the world. All tracks once again offers something for the hardcore listener/collector, and of course the DJ's that have a love for classic deep house and vinyl!

The EP starts with Mikael Jonasson's, 'Benefit of the Doubt' which uses dark, melodic bleeps to create tension before the epic chord stabs kick in that resonate over the throbbing bass line. Adam Beyer steps up with the second track 'Never Really Left Home' that uses a rhythmic synth-line to create a dark and moody piece of music. Ida Engberg then delivers her unique style of techno using old rave sounds and a huge hoover style synth to create a driving techno track that will keep any dancefloor moving. The Manic Brother's supply another big track named 'Different Directions' using reverberated stabs to create an atmospheric, but still functional track with lots of rhythmic percussion thrown in. Patrick Siech then steps up with the next track, 'Kill Room' that also uses atmospheric percussion and stabs to build into a funky drum groove. Joel Mull presents the sixth track on the compilation; 'Rimson' that uses hypnotic drums to captures the listener's attention to lead into a floaty synth and vocal line before the track introduces a pulsating bass line. 'Second Coming' is the next offering with Petter B using recurrent percussion to full effect to create a purposeful, heavy hitting techno track. The final track by Cari Lekebusch called 'Xylopeggiator', conveys a dark, pounding 5 AM rhythm that uses vocal samples and a melodic synth to create a hypnotic drum pattern.

Alex Font - Now Is My Time
OBLACK005
Oblack Label
12inch13.03.201313.MAR.13

HouseDeepTech

Alex Font is a serious guy who knows that now is his time. A multi-instrumentalist, as well as a producer and DJ, he can sometimes be seen on stage in trademark shirt and bow tie. He declares himself a lover of vinyl and, above all, what he calls real house. I think that says it all.

'NOW IS MY TIME' is the fifth release on the Oblack label and is available in black vinyl and digital. It is undeniable proof that Alex Font has arrived and is now a permanent force on the House scene, mainly in soul and dance, but who also knows how to reinvent his sound using new tech. Always with an eye on the future of sound innovation, he still manages to keep hold of his roots and respect his great influences. Well, nothing less would do. On this EP you can tell that Alex Font (remember, this is one serious guy) knows what he has in his hands and spinning on his turntable. His knowledge of musical composition, harmony and engineering skills jump out at you as soon as the first beat of 'Now is my time' hits the speakers: darkness, sophistication, soul and groove. There's a perfect command of tempo, of where, when and how. You pick up on the instrumental skills which allow him to do what he wants, when he wants. That's what's so great about this: you're struck by the ease of how such perfect technique and astoundingly good taste come together. Digitally analogical (or is it the other way round), this is the deeply profound vs. the dancefloor. It fascinates and liberates, carrying you off through different dimensions before breaking out of itself, with no need for artificial fanfares as it's so perfectly defined by Chicagoan pianos, hi-hats, funkoid vocals, etc. He's simply extraordinary: Alex Font signed by Oblack 005.

The remix by Martinez gives this track a technical edge and club splendor. Leaving out the more classic elements of house that are present in the original, the Swedish producer slows things down so that it doesn't lose any of its elegance, but at the same time the track gains punch on the dancefloor, and there's no doubt that it works. As cool as it is effective at inciting dance and everything else that comes with gyrating your pelvis in the early hours of the morning.

Finally, the Argentinian Shall Ocin plays the scoundrel here by adding diverse electronic elements that take the track into a new dimension. By giving the vocal more prominence, here it takes centre stage, and over a well-layered tech-house base, it makes the tremendous savoir faire of the original literally surf, while at the same time respecting and completing it.

In the end, it's great that you know that this is your time and that you want to share it, through Oblack and on vinyl, with all of us. Thanks comrade.

If the "Parquet" album saw them delivering a unified vision of dancefloor purity to massive acclaim, "Cashmere" now takes ELEKTRO GUZZI's signature man-machine sound up a notch. It is moving their rock-solid base towards ecstatic moments of techno bliss. In the title track layers of circling angular chords cause goose bumps, while a warmly pulsating foundation of bass and drums locks in
the groove. The "Reverse Mix" does exactly what it says: reversing the arrangement and re-building the track back to front. In "Crack Fox" it is then the interaction of shifted bass line and countering melodic scraps that pushes the whole thing forward. All set off against ultra-steady drumworks, only swelling in lengthy waves towards eerie peaks, the result is sheer madness. Essential material from
the band that reinvented "live techno."

Ernesto Ferreyra is a producer of pedigree, and a bastion of quality over quantity. His releases for Cynosure and Mutek_rec and his stunning album for Lucianos Cadenza imprint attest to this. His new Message From Abroad EP for Memoria continues his trend for finding beauty and groove in depth and restraint. The lazy funk of A Ship In The Skys plump bassline doesnt quite suggest whats to come; that being dreamy, atmospheric tech
house of the highest order. A masterful use of space, FX and texture runs through the track, subtle, heady melodies laced with warm, intricate percussion and deft soundscapes. The unexpected twists and turns in Ferreyras genius arrangement make for a constantly engaging ride during which you're always kept on your toes. Think Cocoon in its deeper, more sumptuous moments and you're heading in the right direction. Mostly Numb
goes deeper still, rolling yet subdued bass undulating beneath delicate pad sounds and sprightly piano chords. Otherworldly sounds tickle the tracks edges, a hypnotic undercurrent swirling around the soft melodies and carefully utilised sounds. Chilling rounds off this engrossing EP in a more percussive manner, with its combination of taut snares and juicy wooden percussion pattering away alongside chunky tech bass and tripped-out FX
and vocal.

Cadenza Records kick starts it's 10th year in the game with 'Hunter', a release that balances the warm and cinematic productions of Martin Patino's original mixes, with the dark and powerful remix by young upstart, Julien Bracht. With previous releases and remixes on labels such as Freerange, Suara, Trapez and Rotary Cocktail, Patino is carving out an expansive and eclectic deep house sound, and his talents are perfectly captured on this release. 'Your Lips, Underwater' is a track that's been bubbling under for many months, a percussive and melodic groove wrapped together with heavy analogue bass and teasing jazzy keys. Title track 'Hunter', featuring the vocals of Astrid Hald, is a powerful, brooding production. The house groove develops perfectly, with the melancholic vocal back dropped by the dramatic and haunting pianos and strings, evoking shades of Massive Attack production values. 'Hunter' is a stunning and very original piece. Cadenza's newest signing, Julien Bracht, supplies a remix of 'Hunter', offering up an all-together different shade to the original. Aptly titled the 'Darkmix', Bracht gets busy deconstructing and reconstructing, taking just mangled snippets of the vocal with swathes of rumbling, aquatic bass washing over the reverb soaked, drum heavy routine. Alex Niggemann's 2012-defining long player 'Paranoid Funk' dropped in June to a rapturous response from DJs, dancers and home listeners alike. Here, Poker Flat Recordings revisits some of the exceptional highlights of that record, and deliver a remix package sure to be as equally sought-after by those in the know. 'Paranoid Funk' saw the Berlin resident explore a variety of grooves and textures, an experiment that won him many new admirers and a great deal of critical acclaim. Here, some of the hottest remix talent in the scene get their hands on the originals and twist them into new shapes. Following on from releases on Cocoon, Kling Klong, Circle and two strong EPs on Poker Flat ("Dinosaurs' and 'This") renowned producers Alex Flatner and LOPAZZ take on 'Don't Wait' and drop a growling, main room monster that will standout in any set. Francys, the young Italian making quiet a name for himself on the underground house and techno circuit, lends his skills to 'Back 2 Basics feat. Benji' - channeling the spirit of the early 90s into seven ecstatic minutes. Next up is Salvatore Freda - the highly respected Swiss DJ and producer who injects Niggemann's 'I Don't Care' with a narcotic groove that sits somewhere between Detroit and Berlin - the dubbed out vocals adding an element of otherworldliness that work in perfect compliment to the track's twisted (paranoid) funk. Berlin's own Andre Lodemann picks out 'Lovers' for his excursion, a deep bomb that grows and grows around an exceptional vocal from John Rydell - this is one for the very late nights or early mornings. What is clear from this release is that Alex Niggemann's star continues to rise - the classical pianist turned producer and DJ extraordinaire is moving on to the next phase of his career - and with the slew of outstanding releases to his name already, who is to say where that could lead. Newly established music connection House is OK from Frankfurt and Zagreb is raising the roof with the upcoming We Make Music Vol. 1 release. Get into the party mode with Janis, Oliver Achatz, Homeboy and The Citizen's Band this December. We Make Music opens with JANIS 'Mind Made Up'; a reminder of the early Frankfurt House sound with a scent of the Soylent Green Remixes from the late 90ties. A distorted Techno siren that evolves over a tough and jacking 909 groove and finally leads into blissful deepness. Homeboy, who got some attention with his playful Hypercolour release, brings out the edgier and deeper sound in 'Sedam'; a track based on the elements of classic House, whilst breaking the borders through its arrangement and musical form. The jazzy synth riff that locks to a hypnotic 7/4 groove is what makes this track a quality gem. Previous support on Jimpsters Freerange podcast shall suffice as evidence. The flip-side starts with Oliver Achatz' track: 'It Won't Last'. Oli, being the sentimental one in this joint, proves that House music can work with a very sensual touch. The smooth and warm use of analogue synth lines combined with suggestive vocal samples, are played over a steadily drifting rhythm. This compound, of an almost meditative nature, will provide the perfect atmosphere for early morning club hours. The Citizen's Band, one half of Arto Mwambe, closes the compilation with a remix of Janis' 'Mind Made Up". TCB shows that a track doesn't need much to get the crowd jumping and the party working, by returning the tune to its basic elements and making it a club banger for the 'heads". We Make Music Vol. 1 is only the first out of the three upcoming releases set to shake your solid house ground.

'Little Drummer Girl' is a stunningly rich, diverse and futuristic 4-track EP from the Brooklyn duo Tiger Fingers. A collaboration between Jordan Lieb (also known as Black Light Smoke) and Asako Kujimoto. The cheekily-named pair have assembled three unique remixes of their title track - each as bold and refreshing as the other. The A side kicks off with the original - all bubbling synths, arps and effects, and a subtle yet disturbing vocal from Asako. Beats and thunderous synth riffs combine with speak 'n' spell samples to produce a mesmerizing brand of 22nd century electro pop. Next up is the 'Night Plane Club Mix' - one of two remixes the Texan William Rauscher provides for this release. The club mix straightens out the groove and develops the track into a crisp house groover, finding plenty of space for old school sub bass, chiming 808 percussion and washed out, ethereal vocals - huge vibes for the floor. 'The Night Plane Remix' sees Rauscher explore more glitchy, post-everything, acid-flecked waters - an atmospheric, twisted stormer. Last but by no means least is the Hotflush man-of-the-moment, Jimmy Edgar. His take on 'Little Drummer Girl' uses the original as a springboard, from which he constructs a slamming electro-boogie-space-jam. Deeply funky, highly charged, and immensely inventive club music. 'Little Drummer Girl' is taken from Tiger Fingers debut minialbum which is due for release on hafendisko in December. About Tiger Fingers: The upcoming self-titled debut album by Tiger Fingers, the duo of Jordan Lieb and Asako Fujimoto, almost never saw the light of day. The release of his 'Darwin' ep for Truesoul and our heavily supported 'In Flagranti' ep, bookended April of this year and saw Marc preparing for his summer residency in Ibiza. The party island played the perfect host to the Frenchman as electrified the floor of Marco Carola's hugely successful Music On parties. Three months on the spiritual white isle was always set to influence and inspire and it was these experiences and special moments that Marc sought to share through his new productions. Our first taster of these summer sessions is the double-header of 'Sorry For The Violence' and 'Thats The Way To Do It.' We are treated to trademark Antona grooves powered by organic percussion and crisp drum work that gives both tracks an uncluttered spacial feel. You can sense the summer breeze flowing through each. As the winter chill draws closer our new Dissonant release allows us to hold tight, those final rays of sunshine.

HouseDeepNu Disco

Boris Werner is known for producing quality music and filling venues with crowds who can't get enough of his energetic and inspiring sound. These are a couple of the reasons why Boris Werner stands with us here today and proudly presents the Slow Dancin' EP, and we think you are really gonna love it. Strings and a relaxed rhythm user in the title track, complete with ambient vocal samples. Then, all at once the bass hits and the kick fills the void; instant groove. A jumpy synth dances over the track and invites friends to the show. Before you know it you've got a full track on your hands. Don't be fooled by the title, as it is indeed misleading. There will be no slow dancing to this gem. 'Missing Out (Dedicated to Ed & Emma) is a bit deeper, but with a warm feel (e-piano on reverb). Then, like 'Slow Dancin'', it catches you off guard with the beat. This is a feel good track, perfect for evenings, deep nights, and early mornings. Not to mention some of the years last open-air festivals. 'Did It In Miami' opens with caution, an indecisive kick with other percussive elements slowly build into an invigorating tech house beat. Grimy vocal samples creep in and the bass line slips under the beat, holding up the track well on a packed dancefloor.

HouseElectroTechDetroitTechnoDub

Earlier this year, this shadowy label came from nowhere straight onto the globe's deeper floors, from Panorama Bar to Fabric and many in between. Provoking comparisons with classic UK labels like B12 and Irdial, the EP gained number 1 chartings and found its way into a wide array of DJ boxes, with the likes of DVS1, dbridge, Roger 23, Justin Miller (DFA), Dario Zenker, Deep Space Helsinki, DJ Mourad and Surface's Nick Dunton all hooked.
Dark Arts 02 starts out in deep space with shimmer otherworldly synths snake around an elastic bass line and combine with haunting strings to create a piece of techno that is at once unique, classic and timeless.
blue_shift is space-aged tech-funk of the highest order. The ricocheting synth work, thunderous claps and bottom end create that special mix of emotion and drive normally associated with the motor city's finest.
dwelling is a murky electro soundscape. Crisp, spacious beats underpin the sparse melodic flourishes and echoey, alien atmospherics. A highly-crafted piece of electronic goodness.
search simply one of the most solid grooves you will hear this year. Just when you are locked in and the stabs are increasing the intensity, the track is lifted to another level by the razor-sharp percussion that is fast-becoming a trademark of this rising producer.dark arts 02 keeps up this label's tradition of high quality, coloured vinyl only releases, mastered by one of Europe's finest engineers. All tracks by S Crosbie.

Andy Vaz Feat. Niko Marks - Don't Lose Your Mind

Delsin Records

HouseDeepVocal

Next up in the Delsin house series is a man who's been perfecting it for years - Düsseldorf's Andy Vaz. The boss of Yore and Background Records, Vaz has released two full lengths and many EPs to date, always exploring a heartfelt brand of electronica that draws on house, techno, Detroit and Chicago in equal measure.

Here he serves up two versions of the same track - 'Don't Lose Your Mind'. Both feature the sweet vocal stylings of Niko Marks and the first, the Soul Version, is all ditty, bouncy chords, floating, summery saxophone lines and warm, effusive synths.

The second House Dub mix is a little sharper - the claps cut through the soupy sonics like a knife and as a result the groove has a more urgent bite. Still stuffed with plenty of human loveliness, though, both tracks are surely set for many spins this summer given their classy feel good vibes.

Shadow Ray is best known in house music circles as the co-producer of the Oasis 1, 13, 13 1/2 and 14 releases with Omar S, although he is also well known to the Ryan Correctional Facility for more nefarious reasons. The Detroit-based producer has spent the past four years at Ryan earning not only a hard knocked life but a trade in Sound Engineering. That was until Alex Smith (aka Omar S) made a presentation to the facility s parole board to commission a remix of his recent hit >Heres Your Trance Now Dance< as part of Rays work release program! Rumour has it the parole board was inhabited by at least one old school house head, and we re delighted to see Alexs idea come to fruition, with Shadow Ray really nailing it with this remix. Staying true to original s shimmering melody, Ray opts to bolster the bottom end with a raw bassline that creates a nice, fat rolling groove

HouseDeepMinimalVocalTech

Welcome reisssue for monster soul-funk LP 'Disconnection', one of the most obscure and sought-after releases from top 70s disco label, Prelude. Ridiculously expensive and hard-to-find in the original, this album is stuffed full with killer tracks spanning warm, soulful disco, high-stepping groove and boogie-heavy funk all written and produced by Robert Holmes. Standouts include the jazzy free-style 'Dead On The Case', later reworked for the mysterious French Skyline project, cool jazz-funk groover 'Bay City', recently edited by none other than Balearic maestro Lexx, and the floor-friendly chunky funk workout 'Cash Money'. However no track is a filler on this superb album which fully deserves its 'holy grail' status with collectors. Essential!

Fresh new talent Widowmaker makes his debut release on Wheel and Deal with 3 dark twisted half step stompers. Tunnelling Wurm:
The atmospheric sinister skanker, featured heavily as one of N-Types intro tunes as of late. Industrial twisted bass, bobs and weaves
around half step shuffling beats. Thunderous sub gives any dub system a work out.
Forgotten Ruin: This shows Widowmakers diversity. here he demonstrates a more tribal sound, , reminiscent of Hatcha's sets in the
early FWD days, but with a 2012 re-lick. One for the steppers.
Exile: This takes us into a deeper ambient groove, spaced out dungeon beats, deep dark and dangerous!

HouseDeepTechJazzy

UK stalwarts Jamie Anderson and Owain K team up again for another sumptuous slice of contemporary house music on Steve Bug's Dessous Recordings. Jamie Anderson has been exploring and manipulating the links between house and techno for over 15 years, having released on numerous influential labels, both solo and as a collaborator with other top artists. But it's his work with Bristolborn hot-property Owain K that is currently exciting discerning dancefloors worldwide. 'Do You Know', their latest collaboration, sees Jamie and Owain drop some serious sunshine grooves - shuffling hi-hats and a classic, Chitown synth let you know that this is all about the good times. The spoken word vocal pays homage to forgotten jazz legends - the uplifting vibe sure to put a smile on the faces of dancers all summer long. Jamie and Owain switch it up on the other main track in this release. 'Keep It Pumping' drops the tempo to 118bpm and digs its toes into the sand for a balearic-tinged nu-disco stomper. Disco toms fire, the sub bass rumbles, and spacey synths and vocal samples wash over this expertly crafted sunrise/ sunset groove. A dub of 'Do You Know' rounds off the release from this hugely talented combo.

Kenneth Christiansen & Dennis Bøg presents Pattern Repeat part 6.
This time Pattern Repeat gets a little more harder and darker on PR00/6.
The A side is a moody dark track with deep hypnotic almost nightmare kind of groove, with a old school kind of atmosphere.
The B side gets hard straight from the beginning of the track with a pounding almost industrial kick drum, that builds from a minimal groove that really will kill the PA system in the club.
Pattern Repeat has stepped up, and shows the harder and deeper side of the Copenhagen Techno scene.

SLEEP D are a couple of young cats from Melbourne, the production duo are sure to be an integral part of the deep house explosion coming from their city, spearheaded by the likes of Tornado Wallace, Fantastic Man and the Melbourne Deepcast crew.

The record has a range of flavours all tied together by a fundamental warmth and soulfulness.
The title track flows and floats in a dreamlike state, whilst simultaneously nailing the groove from beat one.
Bubbles vs The Cat takes it up a notch, entering the club realm with rich bass and tight rhythms.
Their remix of Chet Faker's Love & Feeling is certain to give any dance floor a collective orgasm, oozing an erotic strangeness as it heaves and thrusts away, while Ischa has a tickle of Techno thrown into the mix and, despite its druggy sedation, has a hidden energy for dancing feet.
