NYC RECORDS latest 7”, “NYC, 1984” is an homage to that year for writers, DJ’s, dancers, mc’s, & producers based in NYC at the time.

"Emotional Rescue presents the music of Haile Maskel in the first in a reissue series working with Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb, sourcing and licensing from this digger's vaults and out to the wider world.

Heralding from the furtive 60's Trenchtown, Jamaica, young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel grew up singing, learning guitar and bass. His first recording session was produced by friend Bob Marley, with Peter Tosh on keys, Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Carlton Barrett on drums.

The list of sessions is long, working with Lee Perry, Light Of Saba, Dennis Brown and Sugar Minott. Touring took him overseas where he settled in Los Angeles in 1983, soon launching his Opulence (Sound) label.

Maskel's band, the 101's featured members of The Twinkle Brothers, including cousins Asher and Debo Brown on drum and bass, and augmented by local players. Mixing conscious messages in love songs, Maskel crafts a boogie discodub on which to exalt an uplifting summer jam.

With the highly prized original the tapes unearthed unreleased dubs - "Take 1" providing a wonderful version. LA native Duckcomb found a trove of tapes of unheard material, still for discovery. For now, his longform Discomix, cutting and editing Maskel's vocal along with the dubs, completes a first archival splendor.

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Recalling You, a dazzling Disco/Jazz-Funk new single EP by our longtime friend and label mate Andre Solomko. Born in Ukraine and based in Finland for a while, Andre Solomko is a rich and engaging personality, but above all, a talented saxophonist, composer and engineer, with contagious passion. Since they met 7 years ago, Andre and Pascal Rioux’s (founder of Favorite Recordings) collaboration resulted in 3 albums and a couple of singles acclaimed internationally. Primarily known for a sound mixing Jazz-Funk, with European Soundtracks, Pop and Soul influences, Andre Solomko’s skills for composition and production are much wider. Almost 2 years ago, he’s therefore demonstrated his versatility when delivering the hot Disco anthem “Le Premier Disco Sans Toi”. This first attempt definitely seduced many DJs and collectors, and it seems Andre enjoyed the trip too and decided to embark for it again with “Recalling You”. For this new single, Andre’s idea was to revive two of his past compositions, tailoring brand new glamorous Disco suit and arrangements for it. Backed again by a close team of musicians and the beautiful and charming vocals of Charlotta Kerbs, the new session was recorded live and analog as usual, and then brilliantly mixed in France by Jordan Kouby at Question de Son studios. It ended with what might be Andre Solomko’s best level of productions and sound so far. To make it short, “I Recall” and “Teasing You” felt in love and had a baby at the nightclub… here comes Recalling You, packed in a 45rpm 12inch vinyl edition and coming with a hot Dub edit by Charles Maurice on B-side.

There's some splendid expressions in soulful and spiritual deepness on offer on "African Power", the debut release by DASCO on Local Talk.

The opening track, "African Power" is a fine example of DASCO's creativity, a carefully crafted composition focused around a strong bassline, layers of percussions and melodies with instant hooks.
Up next is Trinidadian Deep with a remix that is both rich and spellbinding, proving once again h's a producer that extends beyond the dance floor when it come to producing music.

On the flip legendary producer Anthony Nicholson remix of "Keep Movin'" is a precision translation that brings the original into a whole new context.
While the original is powerful and moving, with DASCO adding a tribal vibe, Nicholson adds his unique riffs which emphasises the track's soulful elements.

DASCO is proof that determination, talent and dedication pays off and this release is a joyous and deeply mesmerising journey with a unique house perspective.

The new release on 45 Loves features Beastie’s and Biggie’s both on each side over some cherry-picked Moar beats. Vocals fit so snug that we wonder what life would be like if Moar had grown up in New-York City in the 90's. Dancefloors were made for this, quality stuff. The flip is another fusion cut, dropping the tempo and creating a disco/rap affair.

Originally released as a 12” single in 1982, ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ was the final record from Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist and producer Freddie Thompson’s Panaché band. Built around a fully cleared sampled bassline from ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ plays out like a summertime stroll through New York in the early 80s. The streets are full of excitement, but as the lyrics, written by vocalist Denise Williams (not to be confused with Deniece Williams of ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ fame) make it clear, they’re dangerous as well.

Thirty-nine years later, Isle of Jura is proud to present the first official 12” reissue of ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’. A cult classic from the disco-rap era, the reissue includes the original vocal and instrumental versions of ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ plus a Jura Soundsystem special version with additional live percussion.

Originally made up of Freddie, his wife, the singer Debra Thompson and keyboardist Douglas Glover, Panaché formed at the behest of a local disco DJ, Carl Nelson. In the wake of Chic’s early singles, Carl felt a French name would give Freddie a competitive edge. “He explained it to us that it was a French word for style and elegance. Panaché, a step above chic,” Freddie reflects.

Business minded, Freddie formed his own label, Roché Records and joined SIRMA - The Small Independent Music Manufacturers Association. “It was very hard for the independent manufacturers to get airplay and distribution at the time, so we all came together,” he remembers. Through SIRMA, Freddie met Joe and Sylvia Robinson from Sugar Hill Records, who several years later, let him sample ‘The Message’ for ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’.

In 1979, Panaché scored some radioplay when they covered ‘Not On The Outside’ by ‘60s D.C R&B group The Moments. Emboldened, they brought onboard backing vocalists and recorded their only album. This Is Panache saw the band blurring the boundaries between soul, jazz-funk and disco and become a sought after collectible.

By 1982, Debra had stepped back, and one of Panaché’s backing singers was center stage, Denise Williams. “Denise was good with writing poetry,” says Freddie. "She had one called ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’. It was about the unrest that was going on in the city at the time. I thought I could do something with that.”

After releasing ‘Every Brother Ain’t A Brother’ in 1982, Panaché quietly moved from center stage to behind the scenes. Over the last thirty-nine years, Freddie has continued to work in the music industry as a session musician and producer. “As soon as we stopped trying to become stars as Panaché, we became busy working in the industry,” Freddie laughs.

one of the key forces of disco in the ‘70s: The American producer and percussionist and sideman of Stevie Wonder in late ‘60s, Hamilton Bohannon.

Includes the super rare, long 12" version of “Me And The Gang”, plus on the flip the original version of “Let’s Start The Dance” both only available as rare promo singles. An essential bit of kit in the collection.

Ralphi returns to Brookside and updates the track with a brilliant reworking on the drums and vocals, while adding a soulful keyboard track to give it an updated feel. Flip it over to the B Side and we have a new version of “Love & Happiness” remixed from the original multi track tapes by NY DJ/Remixer Mike Maurro who takes the track to over 10 minutes with instrumental extensions and beefed up drums keeping it respectful to the original as always.

Malandra Jr's hit Dance Warriors, supported and played at the best Festivals and events around the globe by Solomun, Etienne De Crecy and so many big guns in the industry, is ready to rock more dancefloors thanks to 2 new remixes by the Italian dj "godfather" Claudio Coccoluto and the super talented tech-house monster Riva Starr.

Recorded in a basement studio in Deer Park, New York - 1980. Mixed Company’s ‘Let’s Go Disco’ is a relatively under the radar record, originally released on New York radio station WNBC 66’s compilation showcasing local talent. Thanks to meticulous archiving, Gene Lastorino was able to locate the original multi-track master tapes for the session which included a number of unreleased tracks. Gene also found lots of old photos and flyers, which you see grace the cover design courtesy of Charlotte McCrae.

Here, Rain&Shine present a 12” with the best unreleased tracks, edited for the dancefloor by Andrea Passenger. The original ‘Let’s Go Disco’ is of course included, along with a Waxist multi-track edit and a groovin’ Frank Booker instrumental mix.

Jeremy Hyman steps up to FT with the first of two 12" EPs that are a coordinated blast of colorful, galaxy-edge plastic techno from the master percussionist who moonlights in Lifted, Boredoms, Animal Collective, and more. Always rhythmatic in exciting ways, Hyman's drum programming here is more arms than buttons, injecting a fly human element in the 12". "Slide" does what it says with amazing technoid bass work and a propulsive sense of timing, "Madness" hovers and falls and hovers again, and "Tinted Mirror" is some sort of Foodman-meets-Prescription-Records house symphony, rising and rising and rising. musical collaborators ever since, an actual live show by
Session Victim & Erobique as a trio sees both acts diverging
from their usual ways just as much as combining what each
of them is best at - although it has been and most likely will
always be a rare thing to happen. This record includes an
intense rendition of Session Victim 's "Good Intentions" at
London's Jazz Cafe and a beautiful cover version of The
Emperor Machine's "The TV Extra Band" at Berlin's Prince
Charles as part of the XJazz Festival 2017.

Today, Róisín Murphy teams up with producer and DJ Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy on the fabulous ‘Cosmedelica’ remix of her latest disco masterclass 'Murphy’s Law’. Transformed into a funky, strutting number, the already rapturous track evolves into something equally joyous and electrifying.

Revered by her peers, Colleen is a hugely respected radio broadcaster, music producer, remixer, record label owner and founder of Classic Album Sundays, coming up in the ranks in the DJ world with her unique take on the craft and knowledge of club culture.

She says, "When I heard ‘Murphy’s Law' for the first time, it pressed every melodic and lyrical button. And as we evolve into a new reality, the song takes on new meanings - sometimes tragic (‘all my hard work goes down the drain’) but ultimately resilient (‘pretty soon I’ll be breaking loose and the scene y’ll be changing). We’re not ready to break loose yet, but when we do, we’ll have the best party. Ever."

Róisín further explains, “This remix came about in the way all the best ones do. Colleen had a vision for the track, she wanted to do it and she doesn’t do a lot of remixes. Colleen’s linage and pedigree is so deeply embedded in the music I love, I feel foolish even going into it here, I don’t like to name drop!

When she asked could she do the mix, my mind was blown. Murphy versus Murphy in the funky case of Murphy’s Law!!!” Róisín also recently created a series of 6 performance videos for the renowned Manchester club night Homoelectric’s recent Stay Homo 12 hour live stream – a rave for these times - and you can now watch them in all their glory here.

It was here that she first debuted the dizzyingly addictive Cosmodelica remix. Murphy’s 25 year career has been one of unbridled, unmatched creativity and these mind-melting, breathtaking videos, all made in her living room during lockdown, once again showcase why she is such a trailblazer.

Last month Murphy co-hosted a 3fm show from her living room and more recently fans voted to celebrate and delve into her “Overpowered” album as part of Tim Burgess’ “#Timstwitterlisteningparty”, which has become the most replayed of the series . So much so that Róisín is returning on June 19 to discuss seminal Moloko record “Statues”. If this hive of activity wasn’t enough, expect a full length album in the summer featuring all of Murphy’s iconic singles with DJ Parrot (“Simulation”, “Jealousy”, Incapable”, “Narcisuss” and most recently “Murphy’s Law”), alongside brand new tracks.

Boston edit fiend Kon returns with his gang in tow for some more stone cold funk to make you groove...

Needless to say - this one slaps in all the right ways! Aided and abetted by his long time engineer Caserta and featuring the dope musicianship of Soul Supreme on keys and Xander Vrienten on bass, Kon brings us the boogie love, reimagining a jam from one of Buffalo's most famous sons. This has summer JAM written all over it, we're talking chasm deep bass, snapping drums and the illest rhodes you've heard for a minute. Oh yeah, there's a dub on the flip too.... essential. Amin Peck is an electronic studio project, contaminated by the New Wave from U.K. like most '80s electronic bands.
Amin-Peck walked a fine line between Disco and Minimal Wave throughout the course of the early 1980s, oftentimes incorporating shameless Pop melodies and Avant-garde leanings. Amin Peck were an italian band leaded by Giorgio Fioroni (aka George Fyron, arrangements, production, vocals) with Leonard Parker (arrangments, keyboards) and Max Marne (production). Incredible but true, Amin Peck started as 'hard rock' guitar band in the 70's... and becoming one of the best examples of italo disco.
This limited edition It contains full-length versions plus uncut audio material (A2) tracked down during tape restoration.

Hailing from Cluj-Napoca, Heion is a producer, DJ, songwriter, music production teacher and label head of Redolent Records. Throughout a career spanning nearly a decade, he’s shared bills with the likes of David Morales, Ray Mang, Session Victim and Kraak & Smaak, performed with the Hungarian Opera Orchestra and always stayed committed to being a true dancefloor eclectic.

Heion’s latest release is Make Believe, an energetic four tracker on his own freshly launched imprint. It blends a variety of meandering synth solos and quirky analog licks, all wrapped up in the programmed yet deeply organic rhythms that have come to define Heion’s sound.

The release also marks the birth of Redolent Records, a label dedicated to being a true home for sonic excitement while pushing boundaries and inspiring deliberate, well-rounded creations. It aims to pay homage to artists that paved the way musically and to the ones that still inspire across soul, funk and disco.

Four synth-heavy jams explore everything from gratitude and creative doubt to the bittersweet joy of balancing out different influences. Solid grooves and chunky basslines drive each emotionally colorful tune forward, whether it’s heard during a starlit night drive or a thumping warm-up in a large, darkened room.
Heion has spent the past three years composing and recording in several studios, all the while exploring new instruments and gradually leaving his comfort zone behind; you can hear the fruits of this labor in a swirl of modern funk, soul and disco that leaves you feeling refreshed and optimistic.

The second in a series of compilations by Jura Soundsystem (label head Kevin Griffiths) brings together music never before released on Vinyl and some sought after out of print titles. The LP broadens the scope of the first Volume and touches upon a number of genres moving fluidly through Ambient, Electro, Dub House, Slow Disco and Library music before ending with some star gazing Esoteric cuts.

‘Transmission Two’ is bookended by Carl Craig, whose ‘C Beams Glitter’ has never before been released on Vinyl, and the actor Jeff Bridges, who provides a perfect finale with a message of personal empowerment set to the music of Ivor Novello winning soundtrack composer Keefus Ciancia. In between you’ll find Aphex Twin protégé Bochum Welt, John Rocca of Freeez and Pink Rhythm, Library Music aficionado’s Daniele Patucchi and David Arch, a Jura Soundsystem edit of Sapho, Hitman from the Philly World music stable, Hirini Melbourne (a Maori composer, poet and Author) and a beautiful previously unreleased song from Zann.

This Double LP is a sketchbook of music picked up on digging adventures from the mind behind Isle Of Jura with artwork from long standing designer Bradley Pinkerton.

To celebrate this historic landmark Outta Sight proudly present a unique 45 featuring two stunning sides by rare soul legends 'BETTY LAVETTE' and 'NELLA DODDS'.

First under the spotlight is Betty Lavette with her 1964 recording of “One Thin Dime”, popularised on the Northern scene by Holly Maxwell. Ms. Lavette’s version, unreleased at the time, with it's haunting brass and upbeat production is hands-down the superior version. It first came to light in 1993, thanks to Kent Records, on the rare sixties’ soul CD ‘Living The Nightlife’, and is now available, for the first time, on the premier division format … 7" single.

Next up is Sixties Soul sweetheart Nella Dodds with her Philly dancer “First Date” produced by the legendary Dyno-Dynamic production team for Wand Records. It was written by James Bishop and originally intended for a mid-Sixties album entitled ‘This Girl’s Life’. The album was rejected at the time but finally surface on a Kent CD in 2007.
However, like our A-side, “First Date” makes it's first ever appearance on a much anticipated 7" single.

Kassian are back on Heist with a follow up to their debut release ‘The Premise’ from 2018. Their new ‘8th Movement’ EP showcases their knack for a tight dance floor groove and is another great example of their well-groomed electronic funk. The EP features 3 originals and a Leo Pol remix. The Kassian boys have worked like maniacs to build their profile since their debut in 2018. Their debut title track ‘The Premise’ was nominated track of the year by Gilles Peterson, and their track ‘Bad Habit’ has been a staple in DJ sets from us and many others. Meanwhile, they’ve had releases on ‘Phonica White’, ‘Groovence’ and started their own label ‘Kassian Versions’ with some heavy edits. They also started a radio show on ‘Balamii’, instantly becoming one of the station’s favorite shows and they’ve worked on charity compilations for Covid19 and the United Nations Women’s charity, while still finding the time to deliver a seriously cool new record on Heist. Apollo is built around a bumpin’ disco bassline, hazy stabs, vocal chops and a deceptively simple but oh- so-catchy lead loop. The track also features some nifty keys and percussion by Thomas Arroyo, who produces afro-inspired house under the name Laroye and has really succeeded in giving the track an added layer of warmth and expression. This track has everything you need for a solid party anthem: A solid beat, a catchy bassline and just the right amount of chops, fills and vocals. The title track takes a deeper turn, with some lovely Motor City inspired chords, rolling drums and their soon-to-be signature surprise move of a driving acid line. A hit of a ‘dubby’ piano and a vocal chant both move in and out and of the forefront, adding some really nice layers to the heads down vibe of the track.

Disco Segreta brings you another most-desirable italian holy grail disco gem !

Originally released in 1979 as a 45 single on the tiny private label “Papaya”, “La Mosca” is the very first version of the “Andromeda” track, already reissued by Disco Segreta in 2015, but this sports completely different lyrics and is sung by a different voice, that of italian folk pop chanteuse Louiselle.

Surprise ! The reissue 12” will not only sport the original 45 vocal version, restored to its glory in two versions, but will also include a ***previously unreleased*** version found on the tape, with a completely different arrangement , “fly” sound effects and different lyrics.

Both versions are directly taken from the analog masters.

Roy Ayers, at the height of his career, embarked on his own Uno Melodic record label. He wrote and produced for an array of artists including himself on two albums “Silver Vibrations” and “Drivin’ On Up” (amalgamated as “Lots Of Love”) in 1983. From these sessions come the boogie dancer “Everybody” and jazz funk classic “And Then We Were One”, presented here on 7” on original Uno Melodic artwork.

Limited edition remastered reissue of a classic balearic cosmic track produced by Giorgio Giordano, Giorgio Dolce and Roberto Zanetti (Savage) with the pseudonym of G.A.N.G. , taking inspiration from Mike Oldfield but with a "slow beat" that gives an engaging groove, enriched in the second part by the ethereal vocal interpretation of Stefania Dal Pino. It is a rare "cosmic" pearl, including a dub instrumental version.

Unsung and hard to find material from recondite UK producer Lemmon Grass aka Scott Featherstone. Whilst the B-side collects and re-releases 2 tracks from the 1993 'One O Them' record (originally released on the British House label Triumph Records) the A-side digs through Scott's unreleased demos from the same time period and proudly reintroduces them into the flow of 2020. All the tracks are top notch and range from deftly programmed 808 beat tools to seriously uplifting 4/4 and showcase the talents of a producer that obviously has pure house music energy running through his veins.

From time to time, a new name will appear on the scene with a unique, standout sound that commands people at all levels of the industry to sit up and take notice. Following two sold-out EPs on his vinyl-only imprint, Semi Delicious, UK producer Demi Riquísimo is one such example and on the 9th August he’ll be teaching another lesson on how to ignite the dancefloor with his third release of the year: 54 Reasons EP.

Just a few months after the release of his debut EP, Demi has already amassed the kind of support that seasoned veterans can only hope for – multiple plays of every track from SEMID002 on BBC Radio 1 by Danny Howard, Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Eats Everything, and DJ support that includes names like Skream, Optimo, Dusky, Ậme, Horse Meat Disco and even Busy P who described it as “just perfect”. With the diary now filling up with sets at Glastonbury, El Dorado and Gottwood this summer, before an Autumn run of the UK’s biggest club events, 2019 is certainly shaping up to be a game changer for the mysterious Demi Riquísimo.

Gary’s Gang are the New York group of musicians best know for their US hit ‘Keep On Dancin’’, which reached #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK #8 in 1978. The single sold over half a million copies around the world. The follow-up was ‘Let’s Love Dance Tonight’ (UK top 49 in 1979) and ‘Do It At The Disco’ and these three tracks have been sampled numerous times.

Copenhagen-based trio Silent Riders recently wowed us with their immersive neo-gothic full length album debut on Music For Dreams. Now they are back with a remixed package aimed directly for the darkest of dancefloors. Together with some top notch remixers, they are re-visiting their stand out track "I See You" as well as "Shadows", another cut off their self-titled album. 
First off legendary producer Dennis Bovell lends some of his charms and works "I See You" into a wacky dubbed out groover, skillfully edited down by Mancunian Andi Hanley. No stranger to the flavours of new wave, having produced bands like Saada Bonaire, The Slits and Orange Juice, Bovell brilliantly fuses his dub science with the raw mood of the Riders. 
Upping the tempo considerably, NYC duo Bryan Mette and Justin Strauss (yes, THAT Justin Strauss!) don their Whatever/Whatever mantle to flesh out the original into a much more hungry club creature, agile and warmer yet with that air of New York cool that really hits you on all levels. 
Label boss Kenneth Bager himself sits down with the trio to rework the material into a dark brooding extended mix that could easily fit the soundtrack of a John Carpenter flick. 
Fresh on the scene is HLLW (pronounced 'hollow') who churns out an organic drum'n'bass banger with eerie layers of odd vocal echoes and a gurgling bass rumble. 
Last up Fellow countryman Kasper Bjørke offers a more leftfield and mechanical approach to the track. Chugging along at 97 BPM, this epic rhythmic excursion unveils slowly and with hints towards the cosmic-minded Germany of the 1980s. 
Also features a new jam version of 'Shadows' - the band themselves take another turn at the track in the studio and deliver a healthy dose of old school electro á la Egyptian Lover and some powerful cold wave chords to underpin the loose vocal performance of singer Lu.

Demi Riquísimo’s burgeoning label Semi Delicious returns for its 6th instalment. Another fine selection of tracks from various artists selected by the busy DJ, producer and curator. Having toured with Artwork, and garnered attested support from the likes of Eats Everything, Skream, Detroit Swindle, Moxie and Optimo, Semi Delicious proves again that its not slowing down.

Kicking things off in his typical finesse, the label boss Demi delivers ‘Judy’, a rolling, nostalgia trip that treads the line between authentic Moroder style disco and 90’s acid house. His pronounced use of retro sounding synths for his stunning swelling pads contrast the driving arpeggios that anchor the track. Splashy, sampled disco breaks offer up unparalleled groove while the track progresses through passages of bold synth leads and harmonious chordal breakdowns.

Manuel Darquart eases us into the A2, the Kiwi born, UK based Duo showcase their raw, stripped back club sounds. Driving, subterranean bass growls oscillate under suspended pad drones while splashy hi-hats open up with his warm, humming drum-machines driving the track throughout with a crunchy, inviting tone.

The continuing sense of nostalgia builds through 006 with ‘Deep Asleep’. The Holding Hands records regular showcases the distinctive sound he’s coming to be known for. Speeding things up, Baby Rollén asserts himself with thick, rolling 808 drums and diced up breakbeats. A wobbly, bouncing acid line takes centre stage along with seductive breath like vocals and subdued synth pads throughout the breakdowns.

Sealing the deal, Beraber, the Red Light radio regular from the Netherlands delivers ‘Maybe Tomorrow’. An airy Italo-house groove with plenty of swing. Distinctive, modulating synth leads float over a blend of Roland percussion sounds, soft synth pads and superb touches of incredibly funky bass.

Poolside’s first new full-length LP in three years, LOW SEASON arrives Friday, February 7th. LOW SEASON marks the first Poolside album to be wholly produced by founding member and visionary Jeffrey Paradise following the departure of co-founding member Filip Nikolic in 2017. The album – which follows 2017’s breakthrough second LP, HEAT – showcases Poolside’s classic daytime disco sound with a wider array of producers, songwriters and musicians. Paradise collaborated with Panama, Ben Browning (Cut Copy), Amo Amo, Psychemagik and various others on crafting the album. He was also joined in the studio by members of the extraordinarily powerful Poolside live band, including drummer Vito Roccoforte (The Rapture), bassist/vocalist Mattie Safer (The Rapture), percussionist Brijean Murphy (Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls) and saxophonist/keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Casey Butler (Pharaohs).

Kicking off with the chunky blues stomper ‘In The Right Place’, The Owl instantly shows his intelligence for turning an originally potentially funky number into a big speaker blaster with enough new groove to forget the era it came from, while paying tribute to that time.

Track two, ‘Fair’ has more of an original blues vibe but the percussion suits the bass so well that you feel you’re hearing a live band playing a current track. His clever cuts make it a must for anybody that loves their funk with a bit more ‘pow’.

The B-side does not let up on the level of energy, flying straight into the female vocal gem ‘Be Funky’, yelling through the speakers that “Everything I do gon be funky from now on”. And this is certainly true from the Owl.

The final track is only slightly a step down in tempo from the others but rounds off this classic ‘bluesy-house’ EP in The Owl’s usual classy, funky style. Expect this to sell as fast as he flies.

The 1980s were an epoch of upheaval and rapid change in South Africa. The decade began with the country’s apartheid government fighting to maintain its institutionalized racial segregation in the face of global protests and demands for the release of human rights activist Nelson Mandela, who had been jailed since the early 1960s. By 1990, Mandela was free, and apartheid was on the way to being dismantled. On the music front, things were changing too; At the beginning of the decade, the main music style of black South Africans was the jazzy indigenous jive of mbaqanga, a provincial style that had held its place as the sound of South Africa since Mandela was first imprisoned. By the end of the decade, South African music stars were making international waves with bubblegum, a flashy variety of Afro-techno-pop.

On this album, Cultures of Soul explores this period of change, and the intermediary forms that filled the gap between mbaqanga and bubblegum. The years when South African musicians and producers wrestled with the incursion of foreign disco and formulated their own style of homegrown disco-pop.

Starting from the early 80s, when bands like Varikweru, Black Five and Soundburger essayed local attempts at boogie and jazz-fusion, through experiments like the Madonna-cloned diva Margino, who domesticized the burgeoning Italo-disco and NYC electro sounds, up through the massive breakthrough of Brenda and the Big Dudes, who arrived at the right mix between native and international influences to point the way forward for South African pop.

Expect another fusion of Disco, Reggae & Rap influenced by the sounds coming out of New York at this time from the likes of Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash, but with a distinctly Jamaican vocal delivery from Norman Watson and Stanley Shaw. On the flip side label head Jura Soundsystem combines both versions for an extended edit which includes snippets of studio chatter found on the original master tape.

FAR are excited to bring Chris Coco and DJ Rocca to the label for this release. Both artists need no introduction to Balearic /House and Disco aficionados, the pair have both notched up stunning solo musical releases.

Meeting at La Casella festival in Italy in the summer of 2019, the duo decided to team up in the studio resulting in the ''Discoteca'' EP, a shimmering slice of Balearic, Disco House containing all the right ingredients and forward motion required for maximum sunshine or nightime connection.

On A1 Discoteca (The Heavy Fun Dub Mix), they manage to create a heady cocktail of synth riffs, ARhodes and Guitars all underpinned by a solid bass line, nodding to the Jazz funk of Atmosphere with the edge of Dinosaur L recording in Italy circa 1982. AAntonio prosper turns up on vocals, whispering, and chanting, evoking imagery of a night out in the mid-summer heat somewhere in southern Europe.

For her latest release Roberta once again dives deep to deliver more of her funk-inspired sultry & soulful sound.

Dance music veteran Richard Sen has a 30 year history of DJing and production. The respected global DJ has produced and remixed many well-known artists including Bryan Ferry, John Grant and LCD Soundsystem.

From the late 90's to the early 2010's Sen was one half of the dance music duos, Padded Cell and Bronx Dogs. This is the first release on his own label which aims to explore the beauty of the night - dark and light, combining influences from black American dance music and European electronic music.

This world-travelling, MPC-busting, Gold Panda-collaborating maverick's first appearance on record was with 2018's WinWin San, a sparkly, razor sharp dance diamond which was received as one of the highlights of Studio Barnhus Volym 1, the Stockholm label's mammoth compilation released in August last year.

A self-confessed "travelling bedroom producer", Sofia started the process of writing her debut solo outing with a journey into the Amazon jungle. Stops were also made in front of a dusty Juno 106 in her Berlin bedroom and a Tokyo flea-market. We're a bit fuzzy on the details but we're pretty sure this record is full of the kind of raw energy and runaway imagination only a really strong debut.

It’s a family affair on the second Growing Bin 7”, as Peter & Patrick Jahn enjoy some father and son boogie with a smooth split release. A sunblushed moocher served two ways, this disc is designed for horizontal dancing…
Rooting around the cupboards in his family home outside Nuremberg, Patrick Jahn unearthed a dusty box of cassettes, saved for posterity but eventually forgotten. Somewhere between ‘True Blue’ and ‘Brothers In Arms’ was a faded C60 full of unreleased demos by his father Peter, recorded in the mid to late 80s. Back then Jahn Sr owned a pub club called Schrank (Cupboard to the Anglophones), with an upstairs office he used as a music studio. In amongst naïve synthesiser experiments and carefree noodling was a Balearic boogie bomb, all strolling synth bass, clipped funk guitar and seaside melancholy – like Brenda Ray on a Wim Wenders soundtrack.
Too impressed to keep it a secret, Patrick played the cut to Carsten “Erobique” Meyer, when he was over there jamming, and Hamburg’s premier funk freak suggested this might be of interest to his likeminded hometown freak Basso. Instantly in love, the Growing Bin boss suggested Patrick provide his own version for the flipside, and so it was, reborn with percussive sway, moonlit keys and beefy bass tones for the next generation. Here’s to the Jahn family, father and son but brothers in calms…

The summer sun is high in the sky. A cocktail in hand. The soundtrack? Chiara. Steeped in Latin rhythms, produced with the golden touch of Francesco de Bellis (Francisco), this two-tracker is set to a serious groove. Beats chatter and mingle in the evening heat of “Rec”. Bass smoothness and brassy blasts are sweetened by Chiara’s vocals before dramatic strings flash like lightning, igniting this already energy-packed encounter. “Studio Line” continues that theatrical touch. Bold keys, echoing the cinematic grandeur of Italy, are supported by dynamic drum patterns as a vocal sample circles. Styles spin and spiral, the track twirling between genre tags refusing to be pigeonholed. Elements of East and West glide and pirouette hand in hand across this stunning 7”, Chiara offering the perfect soundtrack to dance from dusk to dawn.

It would be fair to say that Leng co-founder Paul “Mudd” Murphy is a born collaborator. Since first donning the Mudd alias at the dawn of the century, Murphy has released numerous collaborative albums and singles with regular collaborators Ben Smith (as Smith & Mudd) and Kevin Pollard (Mudd & Pollard), as well as playing a key role in “super-groups” Paqua and Bison. “Susta”, which marks his first single on Leng since 2009, sees Murphy add some new names to his growing list of collaborators. It was made in cahoots with singer/songwriter David Harks, a regular Satin Jackets collaborator who also appeared on Jack Cutter’s superb “Serpent Strut” cut on Murphy’s Claremont 56 label.

“Susta” is a bubbly, evocative and ear-pleasing chunk of mid-tempo nu-disco pop featuring lead vocals from Jaanika Leino AKA JaneLy – a former X-Factor Finland contestant whose sultry and evocative voice simply soars above Murphy and Harks’ sparkling, life-affirming instrumentation. Rich in twinkling synth solos, rich Clavinet lines, chugging arpeggio lines and eyes-closed piano, “Susta” is a strong song that will squat inside your head and stay there for days.

Our advice is to welcome it in – it’s as joyous and life-affirming a track as Leng has ever released. It’s accompanied by a predictably strong remix by British electronic music veteran Andrew Meecham (Bizarre Inc, Chicken Lips etc.), who dons the now familiar Emperor Machine alias to deliver a dub for the ages. Combining his own analogue and modular electronics with snippets of Leino’s vocal and some of the warmest instrumentation from Murphy and Harks’ original mix (think Clavinet and Rhodes for starters), Meecham offers up an epic slice of electronic dub disco that bubbles away for ten mesmerizing minutes. It’s a superb interpretation of a high quality cut.

We were first introduced to Marumo’s ‘Modish’ album via DJ Okapi's amazing resource the ‘Afrosynth’ blog, which archives South African bubblegum/disco from the 80s & early 90s. Aside from this blog, this music would otherwise remained unknown outside of South Africa, apart from the most hardcore of digger and record collector.
‘Modish’ was originally released on Spades Record in 1982 and was recorded by producer West Nkosi, who was a member of supergroup ‘Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens’. He worked with the big hitters in South African music such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Teaspoon & The Waves, Patience Africa and many more. Marumo were made up of a group of musicians from the Athlone School for the blind in Bellville, close to Cape Town. The band members, John Mothopeng, Munich Sibiya, Simon Falatsi and Marks Mbuthuma, had previously played in the groups Batsumi, All Rounders and The Orations and came together to record this versatile album. It covers a wide number of genres from Sotho soul, Mbaqanga, disco-funk, gospel & spacey-synth slow jams.
Flash forward 30 or so years later and lost dead-stock copies of the album start to appear and Marumo’s music begins to be heard across the world in the DJ sets of Motor City Drum Ensemble, Invisible City Editions, Floating Points, DJ Okapi and others.
We included the afro-disco-funk beauty of 'Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae?’ on our Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Three compilation, but felt ‘Modish’ needed to be available and heard in it’s entirety. We hope you enjoy!

The Star Beams album is a bit of an enigma. When we first came across their epic dance-floor monster 'Disco Stomp’ it was on a Disco Calypso compilation, so we assumed it originated from the Caribbean. Years later we worked out how wrong we were and that this nugget was actually from South Africa and taken off an ultra scarce album on JAS Pride records from 1976. The next problem was tracking down an original copy and we don’t think we’ve ever seen our Bongo team member Gary Johnson as happy as the day he turned up clutching a copy under his arm. 'Play Disco Specials' was produced by Ray Nkwe who also worked with Mankunku Quartet and The Soul Jazzmen, with all writing credits on the album going to Ray, the recording credited to engineer Robin Ritchie and the artwork to Carol Knowles. Other than this, the personnel of the record remains a mystery, but sometimes a bit of mystery is a good thing. Aside from the disco-jazz-funk of 'Disco Stomp’, which has found it’s way into the DJ sets of Theo Parrish, 'Play Disco Specials’ will appeal to fans of The Star Beams South African contemporaries The Drive, Batsumi and Pacific Express.

Pulling out all the stops they have brought together a who’s who of the cream of the disco editor roll of honour.

Kicking things off in dramatic fashion on Part 1 is Million Dollar Disco boss 'Al Kent' with a glorious slice of string laden vocal heaven in ‘Where’. Cue classic brass stabs, sultry strings, filters in all the right places and some nifty drum rolls. These all set he scene perfectly for a power house of a female vocal. Opening tracks rarely kick things off with such class.

Following Al is Russian outfit 'Raw Slavs' who jump straight into action with a groove fuelled soulful jam ‘Born in R’. Like the first track it's powered by a wonderful string section. This one is a summer jam through and through. Expect to hear it across all the best summer's boat parties.

Also on a serious hot streak this year Tropical Disco Records 'Moodena & Sartorial' are first up on the flip side with the joyful smile inducing ‘Got The Feeling’. Keys, stings, soulful vocals they are all here. A dance-floor certainty!

Closing out Part 1 is Mexican producer and Discoweey head honcho 'Hotmood' who steps into Jazzier territory. Ace keys, sweeping brass, brilliant drums. Deep but still party, a mercilessly cool track.

Italian disco label Samosa Records have been doing a roaring trade of late, and with this new pack from Greece's C. Da Afro the trend looks very much set to continue. Brazilian flavours meet jazz-funk and straight up disco licks across these four infectious cuts.

Samosa’s unstoppable year continues with a brilliant three tracker from Italy’s Lego Edit, an artist with an insatiable digging habit and an ear for golden dancefloor rhythms from across the globe. He has previously produced everything from Jazz to Soul to Disco and some sublime Afro edits.

It’s with this last hat on that Lego Edit jumps on board with Samosa for a powerful new release. The Afro Soul EP see’s two sublime afro cuts backed up with a monster of a re-groove from label boss De Gama.

Indeed it is with De Gama’s interpretation of ‘Funky Zulu’ that the EP kicks off. Straight from its Zulu chant intro it’s a track we know means business working promptly into heavy percussive laden beats and jazzy stabs. Packed full of energetic horns ‘Zulu Groove’ is a track which transcends boundaries to quickly establish itself as an undeniable dancefloor powerhouse.

Moving on ‘Black Jungle’ combines those afro overtones with a monster of a funk bassline. Its swirling chants, heavy drums and filtered tropes pull the listener into a kaleidoscopic and intoxicating dancing frenzy. The looped up vocal combines perfectly with the frenetic bass notes and guitar stabs to see this one develop into a hypnotic dancefloor smash.

Final track on the release is Lego Edit’s original of ‘Funky Zulu’, it has all the elements that De Gama pulled out front and centre but with a slightly more laidback and funkier feel which sees the horns take centre stage. It’s a track which will draw the dancers out and kick proceedings off perfectly.

Another sure-fire smash for Samosa.

Like a fine wine which matures each year Samosa Records steps into 2020 with a beautifully rounded fuller flavour release in the shape of Funk Purpose Vol. 3. In the same way as its predecessors the label has assembled an impressive team of heavy hitting producers to create an eight track EP which will surely cause serious mischief on dancefloors across the globe. As per Vol. 2 the release will be split into two separate four track 12”s which will be released a week apart on 10th & 20th of February.

Introducing the first 12” are Irish producers Get Down Edits. Their track ‘Comin' At Ya’ sees a new electronic tinged direction for the label. Still harnessing bags of funk and soul it has a decidedly peak-time edge. This is a track which will perfectly fit for a wide range of rooms from straight up house floors courtesy of the frenetic kick to more adventurous disco floors. A golden start!

Next up and one of a raft of supremely talented Mexican producers who have deservedly broken through recently is Monsieur Van Pratt. His track 'U.F.O.' sounds like a 70’s space odyssey re-imagined for the 2020 dancefloor. Wonderfully laconic, its lazy funk draws you in beautifully.

Souldynamic harnesses a powerful but velvety smooth 70’s diva vocal on ‘Better’. Dripping in soul, its smooth strings add a wonderful warmth. Engaging and fulfilling it’s another peak-time moment.

Closing out the first 12” co-label boss De Gama is on familiar percussive ground. This is a producer who took 2019 by storm and if ‘Groove On’ is anything to go by 2020 had better watch out too. Hypnotic organs, bags of layered percussion and ass shakin’ breakdowns all come together for a track which will be a long-time DJ weapon.

First up on the second 12” is well loved Italian producer Moplen who keeps the percussion going strong with ‘Ain't No Dub About It’. Laser Synths, huge basslines and wonderfully expressive synths all combine with a monster funk guitar for a classic groove. Another 70’s-esque masterpiece as glanced through the sharp focus of the 2020 dancefloor lens.

German duo SoulBrigada are up next. Taking things down a couple of notches BPM wise with ‘Gonna Do’ they have created a lazy engaging groove which will see many a dancefloor off into a heaving mass.

Yet another Mexican Connection who came storming through the ranks in 2019 The Funk District is up next with ‘Anywhere You Like’. It’s got a decidedly Tequila soaked tinge to it. Packed with guitars, flutes and hypnotic vocal loops it’s another beautifully imagined slice of left-field disco.

Finally closing out the EP is Italy's DJ Rocca an artist so prolific in 2019 we were unsure where he managed to sneak a few hours of sleep in. Thankfully he also keeps the quality sky-high and so it is with ‘Da Lion Groove’. This one is a funk fuelled disco groove which is heavy on the brass licks and with enough energy to keep everyone dancing until the sure-fire arrival of Funk Purpose Vol. 4.

As this tumultuous year nears its end, Public Release welcomes back Canadian artist Khotin for a final slice of sonic aspirations. His debut release on Public Release “Aloe Drink” was deemed an underground classic, and this follow-up extends the story which began in 2018. Things kick off with the title track “Dream Mentor”, an ecstatic and rushed sense of hope sparkles in trademark Khotin fashion, while “Service Provider” follows with a grittier, heavier atmospheric groove. Squelches of a friendly 303 converse with human chatter, all tied down with crispy drums and an omnipresent bass line. On the flip, we begin to close out with “Digital Field Trip”; a low-fi / hi-fi kaleidoscope of pads and determined percussion, while “Moon Over The Country Club” serves as a brilliant tough love outro. Raw and sturdy with an undeniable groove, yet introspective, dreamy and hopeful. In our minds (and ears), the perfect way to ride towards a better year.

In late 2020, Leng Records quietly reached the ripe old age of 10 years old. To mark the achievement, co-founders Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Simon Purnell have compiled a special celebratory compilation featuring a mixture of historic tracks, overlooked gems, inspired remixes and previously unheard exclusives. When founding the label, the pair wanted to represent the more chugging, mid-tempo end of the dance music spectrum – the point where 21st century nu-disco, Balearica and slow-house meets 1970s art-rock, krautrock and space disco. It’s this trademark cosmic disco-not-disco sound that dominates 10 Years of Leng, proving that the duo has rarely strayed from their sharply defined ethos.



Fittingly, the vinyl version of the compilation – a limited-edition affair which boasts a gatefold double-album and a bonus 10” single tucked inside – kicks off with an exclusive: the never-before-heard instrumental mix of Mudd and Harks’ joyous recent single ‘Susta’. Other exclusives across the collection include a wonderfully spacey and dubbed-out chunk of mid-tempo dancefloor fusion from San Francisco’s Cole Odin (‘The Numbers Game’) and, on the bonus 10”, brand new tracks from rising stars Lex and Harvey Couture. From day one, Leng’s output has included commissioned remixes that are frequently the equal of, if not arguably an improvement on, the tracks being tampered with. That side of the label’s story is naturally represented on the compilation by a quartet of celebrated reworks: Mudd’s sleazy, mid-altering and insanely heavy ‘Slow Rave Mix’ of Tiago’s ‘The Source’, the glistening Balearic disco bliss of Max Essa’s instrumental version of Cantoma classic ‘North Shore’, Pete Herbert’s legendary piano-sporting nu-disco take on early Apiento gem ‘She Walks’, and an epic, dubbed-out Idjut Boys revision of Mountaineer’s ‘Golden Chalk’.

It's been over two years since Talaboman's 'Sideral' EP, a joint release out on Hivern Discs and Studio Barnhus. It was John Talabot and Axel Boman's collaborative debut and marked a new sound for the pair, consisting of rich synth motifs and vivid, afro-infused drum programming.
The two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, responsible for some of the most well-received dance releases in recent years (including Talabot's 'fin' LP and Boman's 'Family Vacation' LP) . Featuring on labels such as Permanent Vacation, Young Turks and !K7, Barcelona-based Talabot has become known for his unique take on chugging house and electronica. Similarly, Boman's refined his own dusky aesthetic via Pampa, Hypercolour and his own Studio Barnhus imprint.
Now, the pair come back together with an album's worth of material in a release titled 'The Night Land'. Due for release on (date), via R&S records, 'The Night Land' continues Talaboman's head-first dive into the deeper reaches of their conjoined musical creativity.
Nothing's really changed since their first release, apart from the fact that this time round they produced (in their own words) an absurd amount of music'. Writing sessions spread out across studios in Barcelona, Stockholm, and Gothenburg have given space to nascent ideas, where the two have been able to mature their sound.
The music is patient and warm, but also broad and diverse. 'Midnattssol' opens with atmospheric tropical panoramas, coloured by rhythmic stick hits and bell chimes. 'Safe Changes' and 'Brutal Chugga-Chugga' are hazy slow burners that crawl at a nonchalant pace, while tracks like 'Samsa' and 'The Ghosts Hood' are contrastingly more immediate and assertive.
'The Night Land', as the title suggests, is a journey inwards, an attempt to reach our subconscious and to document our dreams. We want to ignite hope and push imagination. Close your eyes and open your mind.' Even when many tracks involve the heavy use of synthesisers and distortion, Talaboman have been sure to keep things sounding organic and light.
There is no complicated message or hidden concept behind this release, it's simply two persons meeting and playing music, a catalan and a swede talking blip blop until we felt that we had something worth saying' - and perhaps unsurprisingly this impromptu style of working has resulted in an album that is rich and vivid, but also feels somehow pure and sincere.
The message is clear: Love is all this world needs. Loosen up those tight fists and give your sisters and brothers a helping hand and dance your anger away.'
