Bisweed (Maksim Adel) is a 23 year-old music producer and dubstep DJ from Tallinn, Estonia. Maksim's taste in music comes from several electronic music genres, jazz, soul, r&b, reggae and classical music. These genres influence and shape his dubstep production and live DJ performances. Bisweed's music has a universal appeal, whether listened on headphones, in the car, or at the club. Bisweed has produced and been an active DJ for nearly 10 years. He often performs in his native Estonia and played shows in Belarus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Russia. In his early years, Bisweed hosted a dubstep radio show called Kajatuba' (which translates to Echo Chamber') on Estonian Public radio. Currently, Bisweed collaborates with local and regional instrumentalists, musicians, producers, and vocalists to deliver his signature low-end focused, melodic sound. Bisweed constantly advances and fine-tunes his musical horizons, knowledge, and production. Bisweed's record bag has rare records, personal dubplates, and fresh beats from around the world. His music is often heard and played on BBC Radio 1Xtra, Rinse FM, Kiss FM, and SUB.FM. Bisweed is a young man, but his music possesses maturity and sophistication beyond his age. Nearly two years after his debut album, Bosq Y Orquestra De Madera, burst onto the scene with its varied rhythms and moods, Bosq is unleashing another batch of music for the dancefloor. His new album Celestial Strut is extending summer well past the autumnal equinox.

Not content to produce one style of music, Bosq takes you throughdisco ("Bad For Me". "Celestial Strut"), Latin rhythms ("Ella","Cumbia En Bahia"), and Afrobeat ("Bounce And Pull Up", "Take Over", "Pay The Price") with ease. Thinking of each album like a DJ set, he's always determined to inject many flavors but still keep a cohesive sound.

Lets take a trip to the dirty south of Sweden. Malmo to be more specific. It's time to get down with VED. The band started as a solo-project by Mattias Nihlen taking inspiration from filmmusic, progressive rock, early electronic music and folkmusic. From there VED has developed into a rhythmic machinery. Surf-rock, horror movie soundtracks and found cassettes are some of the ingredients you will hear on their latest LP. Omikron is the name of the record. And yup. Hoga Nord is the label that publishes it. And hopefully will be damned for it. First track Looney Tubas samples sounds from the Looney tunes propaganda cartoon Tokio Jokio from 1943. Angel dusty funk is one way to describe it. Walking on stilts to look bigger is another. That vibe follows through the rest of the album. Title track Omikron contains sounds of neurons being fired in an anesthetizised cat's brain in an experiment conducted by the Swedish neurophysiologist Torsten Wiesel. Univerb combines a slow and nervy bassline with sounds from a police video of a sports car formerly owned by the Swedish king, Carl Gustaf, being chased by police in Malmo. Closing track Neo geo contains a field recording of a man selling Orbit chewing gum in the streets of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. All good. Yeah its spooky. Mhmmm, its loco. Above all its sensual non-verbal communication. That will make you wanna reproduce.. stuff. Strictly Looney tunes!

"City Stellar" by Yan Kaylen is our first artist EP release following up to our debut VA album "Setting Forth" released in the fall 2015. Yan Kaylen is an electronic music artist from Paris, inspired by the Berlin techno and London bass-music scenes. His musical universe focuses on a tribal and minimalistic approach for rhythms as well as ambient, atmospheric, industrial and evolving textures. As a member and resident of the Exploration Music crew in Paris he started playing his own productions live in the summer 2013. He has since played in clubs such as Tresor, Concrete, La Machine du Moulin Rouge or Le Batofar, and has shared the stage with established artists such as Sigha, Skudge, Shifted, Clouds, Paula Temple, Objekt, Truncate, Goldie or Positive Centre. He is also part of the cinematic audiovisual project trio Dasein."City Stellar" is a six track, forty minute, journey through an ominous imaginary city. It starts off with the beatless ambient title track "City Stellar" setting the tone for the entire EP. It is followed by the 125 BPM dub techno-meets-dubstep sub heavy "Suspension Of Disbelief", while "Ancients Colony" concludes side A with an introspective tribal beat. "_Field" offers a moment of cautious rest in an imaginary playground with the sound of children playing in the distance. The pace picks up again with the epic "Mirage X84", a broken beat and lush pads filled techno number which then leaves us in the gloomy "Last Quadrant" not far from where we'd arrived in the Stellar City on the intro track.

Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth - Venezuelan Experimental Rock in the 1970s Soul Jazz Records' new Venezuela 70 is the first-ever album of its kind to take a look at the groundbreaking experimental rock music made in Venezuela and created in the 1970s - during a time when the country was both a modern cultural and economic powerhouse in Latin America on account of wealth from its vast oil supplies. Venezuela lies at the northern part of South America, with neighbouring Colombia to its west and Brazil to its south. The north coast borders the Caribbean. Whilst much of 1960s Venezuelan rock music emulated British and USA styles, the 1970s saw the evolution of a new generation of creative artists such as Vytas Brenner, Angel Rada, Pablo Schneider and Miguel Angel Fuster, who all explored the possibilities of mixing together rock with elements of electronica, funk, jazz, latin rhythms simultaneously exploring their links with Venezuelan roots music, creating a new sound which blended a multitude of new and old world influences, uniquely Venezuelan.
These Venezuelan artists looked to the future while exploring their country's own musical heritage to create a new cultural identity. Similarities can be drawn with then contemporary movements around the world such as the Trópicalia and post-Trópicalia 1970s scene in Brazil of Os Mutantes, Novos Baianos, Secos e Molhados (all of which feature on Soul Jazz Records' earlier Brazil 70). 
A similar parallel can be made in Europe with the experimental German groups of the 1970s (Can, Amon Duul, Harmonia, Neu all featured on Soul Jazz Records' Deutsche Elektronische Musik) who deconstructed and reconstructed the links between rock music and electronics to define a new German cultural identity.
Most of these artists featured on Venezuela 70 remain practically unknown outside of Venezuela's borders and yet their progressive forward-thinking music is some of the most sophisticated in the world - a stunning 'melting pot' mix of underground rock, synthetic electronics, funk, jazz and Latin American rhythms all of which explored new sounds and broke down musical boundaries to create a distinct and unique Venezuelan music and cultural identity.

As a part of the early independent music movement, PoL occupies a special niche in electronic, experimental and ambient genres. Still very active in the studio and as a touring artist, he has recently released a collaborative album with Bristol dubstep don Pinch, remixed Peaking Lights, and produced albums by Roots Manuva, Nisennenmondai and Coldcut.

Some believe that the environment in which you make music - from the studio space, to the location itself - has a profound effect on the creative process. Immerse yourself in the world around you, the theory goes, and it will shape the music you make. Listen to Gorthleck, the third album from veteran downtempo alchemists Benjamin Smith and Paul 'Mudd' Murphy, and you can almost visualize the craggy, windswept and breathtakingly beautiful environment in which it was made. Reconvening after a near seven-year hiatus last summer, the duo headed up to the Scottish Highlands to spend a week recording in the surrounds of Gorthleck House, nestled on the shore of Loch Mhor in Inverness-shire. Earlier this year, they returned to the same venue, with its' stunning views of the tranquil loch and rocky, wooded hills rising in the distance, to complete the nine-track set. Certainly, the immersive environment and famously changeable weather seems to have inspired the longtime friends and studio partners. The album's epic centrepiece, the nine-minute Mhor', sounds like an emotional love letter to the body of water they strolled alongside every day. Its' undulating synthesizer line - reminiscent of classic Tangerine Dream and the Orb's A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain' - mimics the slow ebb and flow of water across the loch, while Smith's shimmering guitar lines mimic the glint of sunlight reflecting off the surface. Elsewhere, the audio references are a little more subtle, but no less relevant. The hazy jazz guitars, twinkling pianos, rich grooves and fluttering clarinets of Nether' sound like the perfect accompaniment to a single malt whisky-fuelled sunset session at the water's edge, while the quietly foreboding aural textures, layered guitars and urgent electric violin of Enos' evoke memories of watching storm clouds gathering behind distant Highland mountains. The same could be said of Mr Coats' - a track arranged in steamy Mexico, and blessed with all the humidity you'd expect from such an excursion - while you can hear gale force winds whistling around the rafters on Dogwood'. As for Errogie', it's as bracing as a crystal clear morning in the Highlands, chilly, but hugely life affirming. The duo's previous two albums, 2007's Blue River and its' 2009 follow-up, Le Suivant, were both hugely evocative, but neither captured a distinct a sense of time and place quite like Gorthleck. Listen carefully, and you could almost be there with them, watching the sunrise and sunset.

* The time has come for SCAR to broaden its horizons. As a production duo Survival & Script initially made a name for themselves by supplying rugged dancefloor workouts but there is a much larger story to tell here and with The Orkyd Project album this story will be told.* Production collaborations have been kept to an absolute minimum aside from vocal features, Naomi Pryor is the ever present voice of the album with further contributions from Eleanor Higgins and Ray Uptown.* The influences for The Orkyd Project shine a further light on the story, from Bill Withers to Massive Attack via Eric B and Rakim.* When initial conversations took place between Goldie and SCAR regarding the album Goldie gave the guys full license to create whatever they wanted and what we have been given is a melting pot of 2016 London music. Soul exists beside screw face.* It's important to note that Drum 'n' Bass hasn't been abandoned by any means, the hall marks of SCAR are ever present and correct- the blue print has just been expanded upon.

Alex Suarez is part of a new breed of producers based out of Brooklyn carving out their own unique sound experimenting in the world of raw primordial electronics. Under the name Cienfuegos, he has prior releases on Brooklyn's Primitive Languages imprint as well as the France's Unknown Precept label-with his new "Lost in God's Country" ep we see him debut on the New York centered Bank Records.

Through the four tracks Cienfuegos harkens back to the time of early industrial music, not far off from the early transmissions of SPK or even hinting at sounds akin to E.g. Oblique Graph. Suarez has a knack for developing textures and tension in his music sewing it all together with plodding rhythms and the occasional creeper vocal. Heavyweight stuff coming most highly recommended.

AD Bourke rejoins the Fold for a second outerstellar voyage to the inner mind, an aurally administered distillation equal parts cosmic melodia meets gritty Detroit house. With 'Equal Turns EP' AD's continued sonic refinement traverses club centric rhythms and syncopated electro basslines awash with his trademark lush synthology.



Building on the hype generated by his sold out 12' label opener, AD again delivers a series of finely crafted grooves and deep atmospheres across the first three tracks of the EP. Closing out proceedings we are treated to the soulful meandering of 'Naked Eye', a true display of musicality that sets this producer apart from many in the electronic world.

Composer, musician and producer Nils Frahm steers the new edition of Late Night Tales, set for release on 11th September. A hypnotic voyage through modern and classical composition, experimental electronics, jazz, dub techno, soundtracks and soul; Frahm's Late Night Tales haunts and beguiles. It's not mixing, so much as gently layering, like a particularly fluffy goose-down duvet folding in on itself, the folds part of the attraction, the layers part of the overall picture being painted. Many of the tracks have been edited, effected and re-made. The subtly overdubbed parts on Rhythm & Sound's 'Mango Drive' adding to the haunting hypnosis, while choral interruptions aid Miles Davis' 'Générique' on its journey towards the light. Meanwhile, on Boards Of Canada's 'In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country', the tempo is somewhat sluggish, the organs slurred, as Frahm slows it down to a funereal 33rpm that nevertheless fits perfectly. The purring of his girlfriend's cat Cleo transitions playfully between Nina Simone's definitive version of 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes' and unearthing the gentle electronics of Dub Tractor. Eddy Arnold's 'You're The Only Star', a country tune that sounds like its transmitting from a mid-west diner wireless circa 1947, is straight from the soundtrack to an imaginary David Lynch movie, comforting and dismaying all at once. This crackly reality abounds, as on Finnish band Gentleman Losers' 'Honey Bunch', that adds an unsettling texture, with a sound that is modern but as nostalgic. Frahm's own tracks bookend the mix, opening with an inspired "rework" of the infamous silent John Cage piece '4:33' ("I sat at the piano in silence and worked from


there. I listened and took in the atmosphere and this is what came out of it") and ending with a solo piano version of 'Them', taken from his recently released score of the film 'Victoria'. The traditional Late Night Tales spoken word epilogue is voiced by actor Cillian Murphy (Inception, Batman, 28 Days Later), reading a short story by Edna Walsh (Hunger, Disco Pigs).

"The Girl and the Chameleon" will probably fall under the genre tags of acid, electro and techno but it is so much more. Witschkowski has been responsible for exemplary electronics throughout his career and this latest is undeniably some of his best. The album sees The Exaltics don a dust mask. Warehouse parties, strobe lights and fog machines and the 90s underground acid scene are definite influences. But there's more. Across thirteen tracks and two slabs of wax the Jena artist takes you on a journey into his world. Gnarled and clinical grooves, caustic 303 encounters, depraved dancefloor destroyers and soothing machine music. A sonic trek through tough and taut textures with touches of tenderness. An album that shows a depth of ability, an enviable talent and a knowledge of how to break floorboards.

*Tapesongs is the second of two crucial Joan La Barbara reissues on Arc Light Editions, following Voice Is The Original Instrument (ALE005). The original artwork is an incredible shot: Joan buried to her neck in reel to reel tape. It includes two essential pieces: John Cage's Solo For Voice 45, and a burning take-down of Cathy Berberian in Cathing'.

* Originally released in 1977, Tapesongs makes use of early electronics, and multi-tracked tape techniques to manipulate La Barbara's signature extended vocal techniques. In 1977, La Barbara was living in NYC, playing concerts internationally and performing regularly with John Cage, who she described as a mentor. I began working with John Cage in 1976 and we had done several performances of his "Solo for Voice 45" from Song Books in concert,' says Joan. Cage determined the 13-minute version for this version, overlaying all 18-pages of the score so that one hears the entire work in layers. Hearing it again after all these years is wonderful and brings back many memories.'

* Cathing' uses a recording of a radio interview Cathy Berberian did during the intermission of one of La Barbara's concerts at the Holland Festival: She basically trashed those of us doing extended vocal techniques,' she says. She used the interview for her own self-promotion rather than taking on the mantle of the 'mother' of vocal explorations. Rather tragic, I thought. So I created a work exploring extended vocal techniques and manipulating her spoken voice.'

* Thunder' is for six tympani and voice, using electronic devices (the same as used in Vocal Extensions' from ALE005), and explores patterns through instruments and real-time composition with two jazz improvising musicians.

Northern Irish born, Glasgow based musician Gary Caruth been steadily building a successful ouvere of releases from his 2011 debut Gestures EP to appearing on Emotional Response's 'Schleißen" series last Spring.
Coming together across 10 tracks 'Shapes In Formation' mixes his love of field recording with deep ambient soundscapes. The melancholic sonicsbely patterned tones that transport to that place where music and the silent reality of the world merges.
Beyond his recent ambient explorations, side opener Rain points to something beyond, a swirling meld of vocal loops and rhythmic pulses that promise anew. More follows in Pace (Movements I to IV) and People + Plants, taking the sonic exploration onwards.

Golden Parachutes is a unique, collaborative musical effort comprised of Stewart Walker (US/Berlin) and Touane (Italy/Berlin).
Following five years of collaborative live-performances and techno releases through Stewart's Persona Records imprint, here the duo has decided to co-mingle their influences from Afrobeat and Progressive Jazz into a boundary-free exploration. Liberated from the constraints of repetitive, pounding kick drums, they unveil a new sound of timbral fluidity built-up from live and sequenced instruments.
More than just music, their innovative approach delivers 43 minutes of consummate aural landscapes that pull the listener in head first. As the title 'Into The Dark Grey Morning' suggests the album takes you on a sweet atmospheric journey where melodic washes of colour and light flicker illumination into the dark clouds of monochromatic noise and reverb compositions, evoking fresh beginnings in electronic music... like a light at the end of the tunnel.

With the release of their last album Smoke' (2013) Dapayk & Padberg moved to a listening oriented direction, that also works perfectly off the dance floor. The new single Sink This Ship' underlines their decision to follow this path in the future ... maybe even with their upcoming album Harbour' later this year. On Sink This Ship' Eva Padberg unfolds her matured voice, which shows more confidence than on previous records. Dapayk skillfully puts her voice in a common scenery, where the straight beats are long over and where is space for extravagances and inventiveness. 'Cathedrals' perfects the off-beat rhythm in a dubstep movement forging it's own stream of consciousness which fits the dance-floor as it pulses the body into a steady trance-like state whilst maintaining a firm grip on the atmosphere of the LP without repeating itself. 'Celestial Mechanics' sounds like the alien chant from a group of lost children discarded on a planet long ravaged by time with it's repetitive call intro which appears sporadically as if fighting not to be forgotten. Meshing layers of string melodies to rising wind sheets over schizophrenic sporadic keys breaks us down into a warble bass concluding the song and re-introducing you to the planet you thought you had escaped. Lucky for us then that 'End Of Stars' delivers just the follow up we want as it casts us deeper in an ambient, HD soundscape of pure meditation. Its rhythm, key changes and layers of subtle, indiscernible yet perfectly tuned sounds take you to a place you want to remain in a lot longer than the few minutes you are given. However, our journey must continue and this time we enter a world of glass sounds with hints of digital, offbeat subtleties and pondering piano notes which reverberate in 'USHDKNW'. 'Mermaids' gives us a 2 sided delivery of industrial sounds and eerie echoing coupled with a hopeful melody which forms the crucible of this whole journey as it portrays a strange, off the beaten track break from the sweetness heard so far. 'Under The Lake (Cure me)' is a stunner carrying on from its predecessor building up a trance-like haven of echo chambers before leading this sea worthy juggernaut back to 'Shore', its hopeful meadow of sound complete with birds chirping throwing us down into some wonky off beat claps in a song reminiscent of 'Herbie Hancock' style ponderings and bringing us nearer to the end in a gentle lull of strings. 'Yugen' brings the album to a close in a whirlwind of snowy, oriental soundscapes and delicate percussion. This whole LP is an ambient bass journey perfect for long roads and one you will rewind as I did several times today alone.

The flawed wonders that Yair Elazar Glotman puts forth on his latest opus I Know No Weekend are the coldest dreams you would ever wish to immerse yourself in. They recall echoes of echoes, forced into slowly struggling shapes, ghosts of memories, whispers of life from another dimension. Shamanic-repetitive beats shift slowly beneath echoing bells and fragments of past transmissions. Overwhelmingly, one is taken into upon a winding mental path, with no clear resolution in sight, although the journey is ever-evolving and new.

The listener perceives a great mechanism at the edges of this mass of sound, a machinery of blackened iron that grinds ceaselessly, opening vast spaces to the ear. Howling winds caress the nerves like ground glass, opening up the long limits of the Void. These are the siining harmonics of entropy

The first 'Sketches From An Island' album garnered support from a diverse set of trailblazers. From Gilles Peterson to Trevor Jackson, Boiler Room to Pitchfork, Mark Barrott has become an unlikely hero for Balearic music after only a few short years living in Ibiza.

Barrott founded the International Feel label in Uruguay in 2008. Ironically his formula is to not pay attention to the outside world, valuing only his own intuition, which has more than once led him to drop out and find himself on the other side of the world. Barrott's impermanence and isolation has steered the International Feel label to become a new voice for dance music, standing apart from current trends and one that many people are now gravitating towards.

The Fader noted that Sketches is "brimming with New Age arpeggios and field recordings of local wildlife". For Barrott it acts as a bridge between his own spirituality and creative expression. "Humanity is facing a big challenge at the moment. We're at a fork in the path,' he muses. 'More so than ever people are now pushing the boundaries, taking more drugs and seeking sensory overload, driven in part by the hedonism traditionally associated with dance music. For me, it's time to focus more on making healing music, on trying to find the balance between all this wonderful technology and the freedom it gives us with the natural world. This is one of the overriding inspirations for the Sketches series.'

'I am also telling stories of everyday life in Ibiza, soundtracking my life here through local field recordings, dusty synths, some African percussion and a bit of slide guitar. This music isn't about finding the latest trends in the way other dance music is, it's a lot more like folk music, taking mood, atmosphere and composition and threading stories around that framework.'

Balearic music gave birth to dance music as we know it, but its diversity and openmindedness was lost in it's translation to the stark modern world. As Pitchfork stated in their piece on Sketches, "It may be overshadowed by billboards of current trends, but the spirit remains intact."

While the original spirit from the first Sketches album remains, tracks like the instrumental
emotional pop of 'Driving to Cap Negret' and the heavy weather atmosphere of 'Distant Storms at Sea' highlight a compositional leap forward. The polyrhythmic joy of 'Cirrus & Cumulus' and overall feeling portrayed by Barrott's idiosyncratic aural oddities, highlight a composer comfortable in his own skin and very content with his surroundings and day to day life.

"It was also influenced by playing at La Torre last summer,' Barrott explains of his residency at Ibiza's latest sunset mecca. 'I loved seeing how people react to the wonderful spectacle of the sunset and how you can create a movie soundtrack where the sunset is the film."

Barrott also held a residency at Ibiza's infamous Pikes alongside DJ Harvey last summer. But is happiest at home, "engulfed in Mark world, which is all about my wife and family, the cats, sunsets, eating well, meditating, hanging out....and cricket."

A brave and outspoken maverick, Sketches bares his soul and heart, perhaps the reason so many are drawn to it. ' This new album is a metaphor for some of the big questions. I believe in reincarnation within a life. The person I am today, began at age 30 when I woke up on a beach and had an epiphany. I was very different person before that and since that point I have been very fortunate to flow from one synchronous moment to another. I've realised this journey is the journey within. If one second of any of the Sketches records help people achieve that on their own, then I'm eternally grateful."

U has always displayed an unironic conformity to his own absolutely genuine / occasionally challenging ideal as to what a release should entail. After a series of predominantly, and (in the most loving sense) maybe begrudgingly, dance floor oriented EPs, 'Vienna Orchestra' is a long overdue insight into his core fascination as a musician, making complex and intriguing experimental pieces that belie the humble mode of their creation - recording from vinyl records and manipulating the audio on old school samplers. This LP is an insight into scores of hours of twiddling with loops and sequences to create music far removed from its source material (dusty classical records acquired on a trip to Vienna). This is a dense, blunted world, which holds the sound of a musician indulging their own ear's obsessions and insatiable curiosity.

The record's opening is reminiscent of Walter Schumann's 'Night of the Hunter' soundtrack in its deeply unsettling, creeping feel. The droning high strings in the background prick your ears while, in the foreground, oddly syncopated staccato stabs provide the loping, lurching feel. You could be forgiven for momentarily comparing this to some kind of oddball, Deep Puddle Dynamics-esque excursion... but then the fun begins. Throughout the record, the most consistently striking element is U's masterful ability to, with the use of relatively simple EQs, filters and basic effects, turn familiar and fairly orthodox sounds into futuristic and daring electronic experimentalism. Forceful strings become ethereal and strange in their timbre, long, drawn-out notes are oscillated to create warped riffs or motifs and the imperfections of the physical format are treated as an essential aspect of the soundscapes he creates (more on this later). His isolation of contemporary rhythms in the source material displays an impeccable musical ear. Moments of the album sound like beatless grime or techno - not in a YO kidz, Shakespeare was the original rapper!' kind of way - but in the startling, often illuminating fashion they summon connections between styles of the past and present. It's also fascinating and joyful to hear, in this context, the early rave producers' technique of pitching one chord or note across several pads / keys to create increments of the scale that shouldn't really exist. No doubt this would discombobulate a classical purist to the point of distraction but it is a constant delight to hear this fairly un-musical production technique applied within a tuneful, meticulous and unfamiliar paradigm.

There is wonderful conflict within this LP's running time as well. On 'Resurrexit' a sudden refrain of vaguely Reich-ian optimism - a loop that bears echoes of that somewhat wide-eyed brand of 21st century American minimalist composition - is suddenly quashed by a cataclysmic stab that sounds like the cannons-and-all climax of the 1812 overture repeated with alarming, gleeful insistency. The closing track has a nightmarish quality reminiscent of Can's 'Aumgn', where the listener is truly set adrift on the choppy tides of a perhaps inscrutable musical vision, leaving one clinging to reference points where possible, but without the comfort of orienting landmarks you must simply submit to the experience and land where it may take you. These stretches are few and far between though - for the most part 'Vienna Orchestra' is a focused and concise release, restlessly flitting between cohesive vignettes. Some of the tracks sound simply like beautiful, vocal-less songs and offer themselves in nakedly tender opposition to the less easy-going moments. One may find, in places, the securing anchor of the sound can be the reverberating record crackles. This familiar tone is beautifully employed, reminding you of the physical process of the recordings, creating a vivid aural landscape around the music and frequently comforting the ear, creating a feeling akin to settling into a comfortable position and really listening intently to some interesting weather. U would surely be pleased to have his work viewed in such elemental terms - like the cacophony of nature and the mysterious celestial tones of the stars.

Originally released in 1977, Tapesongs makes use of early electronics, and multi-tracked tape techniques to manipulate La Barbara's signature extended vocal techniques. In 1977, La Barbara was living in NYC, playing concerts internationally and performing regularly with John Cage, who she described as a mentor. 'I began working with John Cage in 1976 and we had done several performances of his "Solo for Voice 45" from Song Books in concert,' says Joan. 'Cage determined the 13-minute version for this version, overlaying all 18-pages of the score so that one hears the entire work in layers. Hearing it again after all these years is wonderful and brings back many memories.'

Macro has been the home for the albums of some of electronic music's most exciting live acts. So when a live band enters this context, it should better enter with a bang. KUF do just this with their album debut. The three-piece outfit with keys, bass and drums cooks up a sound that is as warm, cozy and exciting as it is utterly alien. The rhythm section hints at the great history of dirty funk and bouncing r'n'b, but the grooves are firmly of today: dance-centered, thrillingly interactive and broken up at the best possible joints. The bewildering thing about KUF is that it is a vocal-led group that has no singer on stage at all. All vocal elements are based on self-recorded samples which keyboard whizz kid Tom Schneider melds and bends and squeezes in real time. As if it was the most natural thing to do. With no artificial synchronization in place, Valentin Link on bass and Hendrik Havekost on drums push the disembodied voices into an arena of hyperintegrated realtime magic of rough soul, intertwined by improvised outbursts and shaped with the aesthetics of raw MPC-based cut up techno. The album's grabbing openers Gold' and Princess' are full-on instances of the brightly burning world of KUF, with the other eight tunes never ever letting you down. All along, the Berlin based trio take their audiences through a full range of emotions and constantly shifting dynamics. The thorough integration of this extraordinary degree of sheer diversity into a unified experience is simply astonishing. But never forget this is a live band, and that's how anything here has been developed: live, in direct interplay. Seeing is believing.

After a fruitful couple of years collaborating with Kevin Martin, Israeli MC Miss Red finally unveils her new Red Label with a killer double A side featuring production from Mark Pritchard and The Bug.
Her Murder mixtape last year garnered lots of attention and featured riddims provided not only by Kevin Martin but also the likes of Andy Stott, and she featured on Martin's Angels & Devils album as well as collabs with Bim One Production and, just recently, Ishan Sound for the deadly Hotline label..
On Murder she meets Mark Pritchard who heats up a killer twyst of bony '90s bashment drums and slippery acid lines zig-zagged by Miss Red's playful but stinging delivery; the kind of tune that can take a room from simmering wine to air horns and daggering stares in a flash.
No Guns is produced by The Bug and is much more spooked out and psychotic, with Miss Red filtered thru a salivating 16th note industrial bass arpeggio and feral, rasping drums for hand-to-hand, body-to-body combat in the dance, weighing up one of The Bug's baddest recent productions.

The seminal second album from Rene LaVice shows a commitment not only to musical diversity, but also his chartered growth as an artist. The've traced a singular path through the outer regions of dub with much lauded releases on Digitalis, Bristol's No Corner and Portland's Boomarm Nation. On the horizon, they have an unannounced remix project with 90s sound system legends the Bush Chemists (forthcoming Bokeh Versions, inc. Ossia remix) and a dub-jungle dancefloor 12" forthcoming on Disktopia (also unannounced).

Following up the IfUWantMe single, the debut 7" on Bokeh Versions, Seekersinternational provides a full length of warped lovers rock interpolations. Dam Funk meets Dennis Bovell on 13 tracks that take in heart-wrenching strings, sampledelic chops, boogie synths and dub ambience. The debut LP for Bokeh Versions follows 3 sold out tape releases and a mix for the esteemed Blowing Up the Workshop series. With the help of their monthly NTS slot, Bokeh Versions is exploring new directions in dub and beyond.

Though I suppose that the Japanese duo Steven Porter was not behind the four previous anonymous releases on Weevil Neighbourhood, their music fits very well with what this Berlin label has released so far. Pressed onto red vinyl in a hand-numbered edition of 300 copies are three tracks mixing background noise, gritty drones and, at times, a driving but modest dub techno beat. The result is quite mesmerizing, a lot deeper and more interesting that what you would expect by only reading this description, and confirms Weevil's acute hear for this kind of sound." "Sterling Techno abstractions from Japanese duo Katsunori Sawa and Yuji Kondo for the enigmatic Weevil Neighbourhood. Judging from this debut single, we'd triangulate their sound somewhere between older Chain Reaction and Berlin Techno experiments but with a more squashed sense of pressure. The A-side is a bruised and oddly syncopated Dub-Techno groove at 116bpm, where swollen subs buoy creepy, creaking atmospheric space in churning, aqua-tech roll. Flipside is a grand and visceral piece of tempered digital noise a la Pan Sonic, plus a drowned and offbeat slab of sludgy, atmospheric suffocation, in the best possible sense, recalling recent Andy Stott moves." "(...). Finally we have one Steven Porter, of whom I never heard. He has three untitled pieces here, of which the first one is all about digital drone distortion that comes like a violent cascading wave. It's quite loud and menacing despite the occasional drop down in sound. An odd piece. In total contrast, the second piece, still on side A, sees Porter going for an ultra minimal beat, with some minimal synth backing. With the rhythm you could think Pan Sonic/Goem, but you're not likely to find that kind of sweetened synth in their music. A curious mixture of a minimal beat back drop and cheesy synth. Known collectively as Conduct, Robin Andrews & Chris Edwards began collaborating in 2009, working on a range of creative endeavours from graphic art to composition to cinematography. Between them, Conduct has a rich and diverse musical history, playing live in Extreme-Metal, Be-Bop and Jazz bands while also working in the delicate nuances of digital sound design. This tapestry of experience is reflected in their dynamic, widescreen DJ sets which range from the subsonically deep, through the beautifully soulful to the fearsomely technical.

Fascinated with experimentation at 170 beats per minute, Conduct operates in the area between electronic and acoustic instrumentation with a cinematic approach to composition influenced by the likes of Hans Zimmer and Jesper Kyd.

While it's common for Drum & Bass producers to concentrate on dance-floor impact, Conduct's primary focus is to create rich harmonic interpolations and potent imagery that never fails to provoke a strong emotional response in the listener.

Borderlands is Conduct's debut album, perfectly showcasing their unique ability to juxtapose natural and artificial sonics, deadly seriousness and light heartedness. The sort of phenomena where your friend asks the next day what the music sounded like, and you vainly search a thousand different adjectives before discovering that none seem accurate. All that matters was that you had one of the best times of your life and never stopped moving.
Things have gotten easier for us. We live in a world where you can now just play Def Kith II:The Price is Ill o answer the equation. After all, if you traveled back two decades and asked DJs to predict the future of sound, the guesses would probably come out something like this four song, 38-minute odyssey, released on Anticon.
There are the sleek glides of Krautrock, the chromatic grit of Detroit techno, the liquid freedom of improvised jazz, the loop-digging hypnosis of raw boom-bap, the cerebral float of IDM, and the fusion shock of the new. Minneapolis multi-instrumentalist producers Martin Dosh and Jon 'Ghostband' Davis have forged a rumbling and burrowing, lightless and electrified, claustrophobic and wide-open, metallic and shimmering saga. A mess of contradictions that always becomes clear around the next musical curve.
It's sculpted for crumbling warehouses outfitted with blistering subwoofers and headphone treks through the city at night. The four songs—'Produce Section,' 'Shish Kebob,' 'Chopping Spree,' and 'Kool-Aid'—comprise their own gestalt. Removing one is like chopping off a leg. These are electronic loops with subtle flourishes, built on movement and variation, long forms and intervals - a collection of small moments that build to delirious conclusions.
Both producers have built revered solo catalogues over the last decade, but this formation yields something entirely new. The ideas and influences of the long-time collaborators are chopped and synthesized, merging Herbie Hancock and Caribou, Squarepusher and Wu-Tang, The Meters and Medeski, Martin & Wood. The result is weird dance music that never fails to live up to its initial reason for being: you are supposed to dance to it; you have to dance to it.
Dosh and Davis have wrought something immediate and raw. It was knocked out in four days and mirrors the sort of sleepless euphoria that such a creative process renders. It feels intuitive and loose. It's heady without being cold. It's anchored by the four to the floor but has a crafty intelligence to the design. Consider it dance music that overachieves rather than IDM that fails. It'sDef Kith II, a synthesis of visceral grooves and the unknown.

FABRICLIVE 88 perfectly encapsulates the musical force of nature that is Flava D. Its 30 tracks comprising predominantly brand new, unreleased material, mainly from D's own studio, the entire mix simply bursts with freshness and attitude. Bookending the mix with melodic cuts which stretch her musicianship and production capabilities beyond limits she's ever previously explored, there is also plenty in between to please fans of her devastating bass-heavy sound. Collaborations with Champion, My Nu Leng, Taiki Nulight, Holy Goof, DevelopMENT, Royal T and DJ Q (the trio appearing in their t q d guise) bring alternative perspectives to her dancefloor-led approach, whilst vocals from Miss Fire, Slick Don and Newham Generals' D Double E respectively add soulful, confrontational and cheeky vibes to the mix. Patrice Bäumel occupies a highly distinctive and less-trodden niche in electronic music. He operates at the intersection of the emotive and the technical, his keen ear for melody and drama working in tandem with intricate sound design and experimental templates. While you could loosely label him as a 'techno' artist, his love of ambient, electronica and thereabouts are just as crucial to his musical identity as any sense of dancefloor machination might be.

A stalwart of the Amsterdam scene who held residencies at the legendary Club 11 and Trouw, he has proved himself to be a formidable producer with releases on Kompakt, !K7, Get Physical, My Favorite Robot and Systematic as well as his acclaimed debut album Vapour. He has time and again proven his skill in crafting intricate, often conceptual mixes, frequently weaving in unusual field recordings, found sound and speech samples to add a hypnotic layer of otherworldliness to the proceedings. Here he joins the illustrious Balance Presents cannon, joining the likes of Guy J, Kölsch, Fur Coat and jozif in the series of one-disc mix compilations and following recent double-disc releases from the Australian curators by Magda and Stacey Pullen.

Rather than blending one record into the next, I wanted to blur the lines between DJ set and production and turn it into a composition in its own right' he says of his approach to this stellar mix. But I wanted the result to be musical. I want the listener to totally forget about the nuts and bolts and just feel it. It was also really important to me to create something that is built to last, without any regard whatsoever for current trends.' He took the wise decision to largely opt for records from his collection that have stood the test of time already - that way I knew that I had a lasting relationship with them and not just a brief fling' - ensuring an end product that won't date any time soon.

I wanted the mix to sound truly like me, show off my trademark sound with all its quirks and idiosyncrasies. I had to really sit down and think about what defines my style. My conclusion was that it's a mixture of abstract, foreign sounds and super warm, trancey elements. All my music is a dance between these two polar opposites.'

The result is a mix that blends and contrasts the soaring melodies of M83 and ethereal magic of Nils Frahm with the guttural throb of Plastikman, and the glistening highs of Max Cooper with the dark lows of FKA Twigs. The mix also features exclusive new productions from Bäumel. His intense, brooding version of Underworld's Bird 1 - created especially for this project - provides a moment of high drama around the middle of the mix, while mesmeric outro track Departure is a beatless slice of epic crescendos, penetrating sub blasts and intense percussion that loses nothing from its absence of kicks.

The whole affair was painstakingly arranged using harmonic matching, automation, transposing looping, editing and was finally passed through an analogue mixer to engender a crisp, tight aesthetic. This was a pretty important phase. The difference between 95% and 100% is simply enormous. That, by the way, is something one should not underestimate with anything in life.' A truly cohesive and imaginative piece of work, Bäumel's Balance Presents compilation highlights his reputation as someone who approaches music in a truly holistic and psychological fashion.

I hope for the mix to contain enough intelligence and emotion to be a worthwhile listen under many circumstances. It's not all easy listening, some parts really have teeth. So by nature, the mix is not - and was never meant to be - for people with a low tolerance for music and sound that is outspoken. I didn't want to dumb it down. I think it's a great after-hour home party mix but I hope that it sparks people's imagination and creativity in all kinds of situations.'

* Hydro & War have already had a 12' on Inside Recordings, the Horizons offshoot label which was entitled 'Black light'.

A bold, eclectic fusion of hip hop and electronica, MUZI's hard-hitting sonic approach remains deeply inspired by his upbringing, a tale of striving through adversity in the South African township of Empangeni, north east of Durban: 'Violence definitely played a major role in my life. Things happen in the townships like mine. There isn't any community watch or anything remotely close to something like that. That's why I had to stay indoors most of the time and that gave me time to work on my music. As for the social healing bit, I hope it does one day. Privileged kids grow up being told they can be and do anything they want. We never had that, my family has always been in survival mode and I hope that one day, my achievements inspire other kids with similar backgrounds.

Marc Nguyen Tan is a man outside of time. He is both an avant-garde pioneer and a modern classic. Colder, the electronic project he's helmed since 2003, inhabits a sonic world that drives into the future as much as it gazes into the past. His is a unique sound of noir-drenched highways of propulsive electronic cold wave, krautrock and post-punk, touched by everything from the Chromatics' bleary-eyed romanticism to the Horrors' atmospheric groove, via the teutonic precision of NEU! and Can.

Hot on the heels of Colder's third album Many Colours released late last year and Some Lost Tapes, a Record Store Day exclusive EP, June 24th sees the release of two new Colder albums: The Rain and Goodbye, themselves lost in time. A combination of new and reworked unreleased material from Colder's years at Trevor Jackson's now defunct Output label, Bataille Records is proud to unleash two new parts to the Colder story: Goodbye, a swaggering groove-laden album of synthesised jagged guitars and dynamic electronica, and The Rain, a more experimental record of glacial ambience and New Wave expressionism.

A testament to just how ahead of the curve Colder is, the two albums beguile and intrigue with their explorations of Gallic darkwave cool, a sound which would go on to influence everyone from LCD Soundsystem to Liars. Tan has always been a master of using his consummate understanding of music past to create music of the future. The time capsule opens, and Colder still sounds like the future.

In marked contrast, Colder explores a more introspective sound on The Rain, which is a record of evocative, cinematic electronica. 'Pass And Go (Demo Version)' highlights this beautifully with it's gentle, Lynchian sound of skittering slow motion jazz drums and ice-cold monotone bass, juxtaposed with a glistening Rhodes piano and subdued guitar. The Rain oozes melancholia, conjuring late night car journeys in long deserted post-apocalyptic towns. 'Market Day', 'RE 501 Friday Night' and 'Holy Night' evoke wonderfully intoxicating dark hues tinged with monochrome bleakness, yet feel strangely at home next to more upbeat tracks like the jerky hypnotic shuffle of 'All Along The Way'. Other delights include 'Mango Coconut', a great, big, rollicking rock tune that The Black Angels might have included on their Vietnam War-infused debut Passover, if only they had written it.

The two dialoguing records will be released simultaneously, seeing Colder expand on his triptych of studio albums, which culminated in 2015's critically lauded Many Colours. Not one to slow down, he is also currently working on a series of diverse collaborations including SAVE! - a project with Craig Higgins Jr from the acclaimed acid house revivalists Paranoid London, and an untitled dancefloor oriented project with revered Danish producer Kasper Bjørke.

Presenting Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo, the eighth album from the London/Somerset eight-piece, Hey Colossus. Now in their 10th year, the band have been gathering plaudits and accumulating new fans with every release, and after playing to thousands at Supersonic Festival, things are accelerating at an even faster pace. As with each album release, Hey Colossus continue to mutate and for their eighth album they have enlisted the support of a new drummer, Part Chimp guitar/vox man, Tim Cedar, who has undoubtedly brought a whole new kind of energy that has reinvigorated the band. When the rhythm section takes a shot to the bow it's only natural for the game to change. But long-term supporters need not worry, they're still heavy, still got the same vibe, only now they are focused in a fresh way. Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo was recorded live to tape throughout 2012 in Dropout Studios, South London, by Mr. Westminster Brown, mastered by James Plotkin. For this recording, Hey Colossus opt for a hefty hi-fi sound when previously they were drenched in lo-fi fuzz. Now there is room to breathe, when before they were utterly unrelenting. Tape loops and walls of noise created by bass and drum, rhythmic klang, dual vocals, and three guitars are supplemented by a variety of instruments including the baglama saz, turntables and synths -- adding a whole new dynamic to their sound. These are signs of a band who are playing with their ears open and it's all systems go.
