On The 50th Anniversary Of The Band's Inception At An Event In Harlem, Ny To Commemorate Malcolm X's Birthday On 19 May 1968, Influential Spoken Word Artists, Poets And Commentators The Last Poets Are Set To Make A Glorious And Relevant Return With Their First Album In Over 20 Years, 'understand What Black Is'.
Produced By Ben Lamdin (nostaglia 77) And Brighton Legend Prince Fatty, Whose Speciality Is Traditional Reggae And Dub Production's, 'understand What Black Is' Is A Ten-track Album Which Speaks Of A Revolutionary Struggle Defined By Both Race And Identity, That Has Never Sounded More Relevant. Released On Studio Rockers, There Will Also Be An Accompanying Single Featuring Remixes Of The Title Track "understand What Black Is" By Mala (south London Collective Digital Mystikz) And Uk Dance Music Innovators Dego And Kaidi.
Since The Initial Line-up Of Dahveed Nelson, Gylan Kain And Felipe Luciano Formed In East Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park, The Last Poets Have Produced Under Various Guises Over The Subsequent Years. However, It Was Their Seminal Output, Namely 1970's 'the Last Poets' Under Both Umar Bin Hassan And Abiodun Oyewole That Secured Their Legacy, Becoming One Of The Most Important Influences In Early Hip Hop.
Throughout The Last 20 Years, The Band Have Remained Largely On Hiatus. But Their Influence Could Still Be Felt With Their Tracks Being Sampled By The Notorious B.i.g, Nwa, A Tribe Called Quest, Dr.dre And Snoop Dogg. Umar Has Recorded Various Solo Albums And Featured On Common And Kanye West's Grammy Nominated 'the Corner'. Abiodun Appeared On The Red Hot Organization's Album, Stolen Moments Which Was Named "album Of The Year" By Time. He Also Conducts Weekly Open House Poetry Readings, Where He Constructively Critiques Upcoming Poets, Helping To Nurture Them. He Has Also Conducted Classes At Columbia University, Where He Teaches Creative Writing.
The Inauguration Of Donald Trump As Us President In 2016 Inspired Hassan And Oyewole To Resurrect The Group To Create A Brand New Record, Modern And Edgy, And Deeply Relevant And Reflective Of Our Times.
Tracks On 'understand What Black Is' Include 'how Many Bullets', Which Bridles With Defiance As Oyewole Works Through A Litany Of Injustices Suffered By Black People In The Us: " You've Tried
To Blow My Brains Out With Bigotry, Chopped Off My Wings, So I Couldn't Fly Free, And Dared Me To Be Me, Took My Drum, Broke My Hands, Yanked My Roots Right Up Out Of The Land, And Riddled My Soul With Jesus" 'what I Want To See' Describes A Utopia - A Refuge From Hurt And Those Who'd Make "our Vision Blurred, And Our Faith Obscure", Whilst The Title Track 'understand What Black Is' Aims To Transcend Ethnicity: "understand What Black Is....it's The Source From Which All Things Come...black Is A Hero, Not A Villain."
The Album Even Takes Reference From Prince's 2003 Album Of Instrumentals, 'news', Which Hassan Drew Comparisons From With His Own Childhood Experiences: "that Poem Took Me About A Year To Write....i Just Kept Writing And Writing But Not Getting Too Far And Then I Heard That Album And The Musicianship Was Amazing. I Was Left Wondering If It Was Jazz, Classical, Rock Or Maybe Something New But All Those Images That I Write About Came To Me From Listening To That Album. I Loved Prince In That Movie Purple Rain Because My Father Was A Talented Musician But He Was Into Brutalising Mama At Times And In The Movie There's A Jerome And My Name Is Jerome, So It Was Like He Was Telling My Life Story As Well."
The Album Acts As A Body Of Work Between Individual Members Each Speaking Of Their Own Personal Journeys, But Feeding Into The Much Larger Narrative Of Struggle And Oppression, Alongside A Fervent Hunger For Social Change. These Are Struggles And Tests Of Personal Resolve That Have Directly Shaped And Moulded The Bands' Unique Sound Over The Course Of An Impressive 50 Years, And Their Powerful And Influential Commentary Remains As Relevant As Ever.

The discovery and release of The Nonce 1990 is an important milestone recorded during the Golden Age of Hip-Hop. Recognized as innovators of the LA Hip-Hop Underground, The Nonce was formed by two 17- year olds, Nouka Basetype aka Sach and the late Yusef Afloat' Mohammed. As The Nonce, the duo was part of the Project Blowed collective. Just after high school graduation in 1990, the young duo was given the chance to go into a professional studio. Their dreams of a record deal were soon dashed after the production company raised objections to their artistic choices. Unwilling to meet the demands, The Nonce walked away from the project, leaving behind the masters of the very tracks that make up The Nonce 1990. Daniel Borine, of the independent Family Groove label, discovered the lost material for this album in 2017. Borine rescued the master tapes from the studio where they were first recorded and subsequently misplaced, (but not forgotten), since 1990. Sach had assumed the tapes were destroyed or thrown in the dumpster bin. These 14 rare tracks by The Nonce predate their critically acclaimed 1993 single, Mix Tapes and the classic World Ultimate from 1995. Borine returned the found tapes to Sach with the idea to mix multitracks from the 2' tape master tapes and issue the album. The goal was to preserve the original sound from the era in which it was created. For that, they turned to producer and recording engineer, Kamal Humphrey of Flying Carpet Studios in Redondo Beach. Humphrey mixed the tracks on the SSL console that had belonged to legendary 1980's producer, Maurice Starr and to Atlanta's LaFace label of Outkast, TLC and Usher fame before reaching Humphrey's Flying Carpet Studios. What was once thought to be lost forever is now preserved for generations. The Nonce 1990 available through Family Groove Records, on LP, cassette tape and CD.

Compilation Of Sam Cooke's Great Production Work For His Independent Sar Label. Sar Records Was Founded By Sam Cooke And Jw Alexander In 1959 And Closed In 1965, Shortly After Sam Passed Away. Nobody Knows Knows What "sar" Stood For. Sam Kept That Secret And Died With It. (maybe It Was "sam And Alex Records") They Had One Employee - Zelda Samuels. She Wrote Songs, Handled All Publishing And Distribution And Ran The Office More Or Less Solo.
Their Office Was Just Two Desks And A Piano In A Tiny Room. Sar Records Was The Kind Of Small Family Affair That Stax Was In It's Early Years And Motown Pretended To Be. The Label Produced Both Gospel And Secular Recordings, All With The Odd Distinction Of Sounding Almost Like Sam Cooke.
Alexander Explains: The Goals Of The Label As Such - we Wanted To Give Young Black Artists The Benefit Of As Good A Production As They Could Get With A Major Company. We Used The Top Studios. We Didn't Short-cut. We Never Thought Of It As A Training Ground. We Thought Of It As An Opportunity To Contribute Something Back To The Community.'
This Compilation Features Gospel Side By Side With Soul And R&b Songs. Classics By Rh Harris, The Simms Twins, The Womack Brothers, The Valentinos, The Soul Stirrers And More. Old School "tip On" Cover And A Classy Black Inner Sleeve. One Time Limited Pressing.

A true oddity - Side A features John Coltrane's meditation on the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing on September 15, 1963, an attack by the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, Alabama that killed four African-American girls. The song is repeated for 19 minutes, with the "jazz section" removed. This creates a hypnotic effect. Not for the faint of heart.
Side
B features a beautiful and politically timely acapella Gospel song. Austere!

You could be forgiven for thinking that this compilation draws its name from Don Randi's rare popcorn-oddity Oh Yeah!' (side 1, track 8). But in fact, it is inspired by the opening lines of Bobby Mitchell's legendary New Orleans R&B dancer (side 1, track 1)... Oh Yeah! Oh Yeah! Yeah, I done got over it.' Mitchell's epic fire starter was recorded in 1960 for Sho-Biz Records and has waited almost 60 years to be fully recognized as a truly awesome slice of R&B propelled along by Dr John's piano and Hungry Williams' rhythm section with a price tag in access of $500! The set continues with Chuck Scratch Nolen's signature guitar on his Federal rarity The Way You Do' and the compelling R&B roller Pack Your Clothes' by Hamp Jones. Dorothy Berry & Jimmy Norman raise the pace with HB Barnum's production on his own Little Star label while Carol Fran terrifies everyone with her raucous R&B thumper Knock Knock'. BK Anderson, Frank Minion and Don Randi round off side 1 with three storming popcorn favourites. Side 2 is equally uplifting and kicks off with the insanley rare Honey Bee' by Bethlehem recording artist Lenny Johnson. Look out too for Larry Bene's in demander Come Back' and Tony Allan's harmony rarity Little Lonely Girl' recorded for Art Laboe's Original Sound label.

THE MAPLETON HOTEL (now the Thistle Piccadilly), In the heart of London's West End, was the original home of the legendary Flamingo Club (OSVLP014). However, it is a little known fact that there was a second club, cloistered in the basement of the Mapleton, the 'Americana'. The club was run by the Gunnell brothers, Rik and Johnny, who would go on to manage the Flamingo when it moved to Wardour Street and the Bag O'Nails, in Soho, where Jimi Hendrix first played in 1966 and where Paul McCartney met his future wife Linda Eastman. The Americana was named to cash-in on the obsession at the time for all things American - food, drink, fashion, film, music - and attracted a large contingent of G.I.'s, still stationed in the home counties after the war. The club opened in 1955 and hosted All-Night sessions for two years. A 'ten bob' note gave you passage to a secret, subterranean world filled with exotic sounds and cultures and a 3 course meal of tomato soup, chicken & chips and ice cream. You got to dance all-night long to live acts playing a fusion of R&B, blues, jazz, calypso and ska which, in the mid-fifties, was the hottest sound in the world and heralded the Mod generation.

The legendary Okeh Records needs little introduction to soul music fans around the world. It has been relentlessly plundered and treasured for its slue of Northern Soul classics produced by A&R manager Carl Davis and his songwriter Curtis Mayfield during the soul years' 1963-70. However, the imprint was originally launched 100 years ago in 1918 by Otto K. E. Heinemann who had already established a recording studio and pressing plant in New York City. The label name was derived from Heinemann's initials O.K.E.H. From the very early years, Okeh issued records for minority audiences, such as its foreign language music, field recordings and Dixieland jazz. But perhaps the most significant recording was That Thing Called Love' by Mamie Smith in 1920, the first ever by a black blues singer. The success of Mamie Smith led to Okeh's 8000 series which ran until 1932. In 1953, Okeh became an exclusive R&B label and it is the ensuing decade of recordings that form the focus of our collection, from Titus Turner's raucous Big Mary' in '53 to Gerald Sims' laid back Cool Breeze' in '62.

Superb, heartwarming and spirit lifting gospel disco modern soul 45 first released in 1978 on Philadelphia United Records.
.
Calvin Carr & Company are enriched with sensitivity and alive with the spirit. The kind of gospel that sweeps all over you and runs through your veins. There is always a sense of inadequacy when attempting to describe just how good something is. Words like exciting, inspiring and original come to mind but as always you will have to decide for yourself.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, gospel singer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, band leader and producer Calvin Carr (now a Minister of the Gospel) possessed excellent ears for music at a very young age. The sounds of music that shaped his life were the sounds of his early church singing experience. He began playing the piano at the age of 9, continued his work in music throughout high school, composing, singing in different churches, learned how to executive produce and ended up working for the TCS Music Company under the direction of its founder Mr. Tony Carter, displaying the talents of Philadelphia's local artists such as Gabriel Hardeman Delegation, The Young Delegation, Little Sammy & The Flying Cloud Jrs., Gwen Carter, The Collins Sisters, Brockington Singers...
In 1978 Calvin released the now scarce and relatively unknown Without Christ' 45 on the TCS Philadelphia United Records subsidiary.
By the end of 1980, Calvin Carr met Andrew Ford and his younger brother and musical genius, Steven Ford and with their partners, horn arranger Leon Frison, drummer Garfield Williams and bassist Ting' Paul Burke, they formed the Sweet Rain Records' Company that has produced some of America's most notable gospel artists such as: Pastor Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, Barbara Ward Farmer and the Wagner Alumni Choir, Rev Hubert Powell And The Gospel Truth, The Brockington Ensemble, Southeast Inspirational Choir, The Institutional Radio Choir of Brooklyn, N.Y, Southeast Inspirational Choir of Houston, TX introducing Yolanda Adams and countless others.

Cymawax explores the far reaches of our sonic galaxy with its next 12 only release, an exciting seven song set from evocative Uruguayan-Norwegian vocalist Camilla Luna. Camilla is known as one half of Luna & Bazis on WahWah45s, with producer friend BHLB, and as vocalist for Trulz & Robin's releases on Eskimo and Dance Disorder's 'Metallic Italic (Bpitch Control). Her years of improvising vocals with musicians and DJs at renowned Oslo clubs like Blaa, Jeager, and The Villa have given Camilla a knack for accompanying electronic rhythms with haunting, tuneful melodies.
For the Open Up EP, Camilla joins producer BHLB for soulful and raw vocals recorded in one take over futuristic, bass-heavy, and delightfully offbeat tracks. The styles and tempos vary wildly, but the sound throughout is unified in a deceptively organic 'Ex Machina' woman-meets-machine vibe. In the title cut, the almost tribal percussion summons exotic, benevolent spirits when combined with Camilla's temptatious crooning. The twisted R&B of 'Wut R U Gwonna DO could almost be a secret collaboration with the likes of Flying Lotus. And 'F.O.C." transmits a slightly intimidating techno stomp that would make all heads on the dance floor turn towards the DJ and immediately take notice. These are just a few of the otherworldly audio nuggets found within the Open Up EP ... there are more treasures to unveil. Excavate soulfully.

An insatiable, groove laden intro which has been prime sampling material throughout the years - most notably in Public Enemy's 'Timebomb'. "A joyous and mind-blowing combination of Afrofunk rhythms and traditional Japanese instrumentation, "Abrada" is kaleidoscopic party music." - Andrew Jervis, Bandcamp.
AJATE is a Japanese band who plays a unique blend of afro-groove dance music mixed with Japanese traditional festival music called "Ohayashi". Formed in 2011 by the band-leader John Imaeda, Ajate consists of 10 Japanese musicians.
Another unique feature of the band is the use of hand-made bamboo instruments as well as traditional Japanese percussion. The "Jahte" is a bamboo-made xylophone or balafon with a piezo pick-up mic attached to each key, connected to a pre-amplifier to obtain a loud sound and to add some touch of dirty distortion to its warm and natural acoustic sonority. The "Piechiku" is also a bamboo-made string instrument inspired by the west-African "Ngoni" or Moroccan "Guembri" instruments. The Piechiku uses strings of the Japanese traditional "Shamisen". This instrument is also played through a pre-amplifier and John sometimes adds some wah-wah effect to it. All these bamboo instruments are designed, made and named by John Imaeda himself.
Now, add to this unique sound some well-crafted Japanese female and male singing and you get a killer mix of Afro-Funk flavored grooves with traditional Japanese music.
The current lineup of Ajate was established in 2014. Since then, Ajate has played in various concerts, clubs, bars, and music festivals in Japan, including the "Sukiyaki Meets The World", one of the biggest World-music festivals in Japan.
Abrada is the second album from Ajate. Recorded in Tokyo at the end of 2016, this vinyl LP release is the first output of the 180g label. 180g is a Japan specialized label service run by Greg Gouty, who met John Imaeda in Tokyo in April 2017 during an epic Ajate concert at an underground club in the Shibuya district of the Japanese capital. The label aims at releasing highly unique and quality music from Japan, showcasing the vast talent of the Japanese underground scene, never heard outside of the country. Some music you will not be able to hear anywhere else!

Fatoumata Diawara released her brand new single 'Nterini' on 8th March. A poignant, melodic ode to a distant lover, 'Nterini´(which translates as my love/friend/confidant') musically straddles the traditional and the modern.
Taken from her forthcoming album, the single was co-produced by Diawara and Matthieu Chedid (better known by his stage name -M-). Chedid, a superstar in his native France, recently won the 'Best World Music Album' award at the French Grammy Awards for his 'Lamomali' project, which also featured Fatoumata.
Hailed as one of the most vital standard-bearers of modern African music, Fatoumata Diawara is boldly experimental and yet respectful of her roots. A modern day storyteller, her songs cover such timeless subjects as respect, humility, love, migration, family and how to build a better world for our children.

With their new Horizon EP, Lucien & The Kimono Orchestra open a music box which transports you in a blue and dawnish atmosphere, a morning spent on walking in an old cinematic Paris.
First step in the eighties, Connection starts as a film opening. Then arrives the single, Fresh Start, full of indelible voices and gimmicks. Horizon, sung in French, is a delicate reference to the French songwriting tradition inherited from Michel Berger, Alain Chamfort or Alain Souchon. To get some breath back between two songs, Georges, offers a strong instrumental interlude. Almost at the end, the English-spoken Shell extends the panel of influences with it's downtempo emotion. With its spontaneous declamations and slick guitar riff, Asile closes the journey, as the splendid climax of the foursome's second EP.

It Questions If We Are Sleepwalking Into The Abyss, And Is A Revolutionary Song About Taking Power Back Into Our Own Hands! æ Productions are pleased to present the new single by Truck featuring Phill Most Chill - 3,665.
Original AE co-founder Truck is back with a new album coming soon and delivers a taster with this lead off 7' single featuring fellow AE Productions recording artist and Hip Hop legend Phill Most Chill. 3,665 refers to the distance between Truck and Phill Most Chill's home cities and the pair duel brilliantly over a heavy beat by Sir Beans OBE (The Aroma/Parlour Talk/Ruztik Records). No chorus hook nonsense here but Mr Fantastic supplies some sharp cuts to complement the MC's.
The B-side is the 'Raw Skeleton Version' of Right or Wrong - a special stripped back version of a track from the forthcoming album produced by Mr Fantastic which will not to be released elsewhere. Truck flows effortlessly over the DJ friendly obscure Funk groove.
Available on black vinyl 7' in a run of 350 retail copies in full colour sleeve designed by Mr Krum.
