The pride of Passaic, New Jersey, the girl group The Shirelles was formed in 1957 by four friends from high school. After some early singles with chart success, they released their debut album in 1961, Tonight's The Night. Blending pop with doo-wop and R&B sensibilities, and with songwriting from the classic team of Goffin/King, Tonight's The Night is notable for "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", the very first Billboard #1 hit pop single from an African-American girl group, making this a truly groundbreaking record. Essential girl-group pop from one of the genre's true innovators, reissued on 180 gram LP with download code and 2 bonus tracks.

Following up Tonight's The Night was a difficult thing to do for New Jersey girl-group The Shirelles, but they did it the very same year with great The Shirelles Sing To Trumpets And Strings. Featuring further songwriting from Luther Dixon - who had previously written for Elvis, and more, and wrote the great "16 Candles" by The Crests - The Shirelles Sing... includes his all-time classic "Mama Said" which marched to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. Next up are two exceptional disco remixes of The Salsoul Orchestra classics, Tale of Three Cities' and Tangerine', by Mike Maurro, whose recent The Mike Maurro Peak Hour Remixes box set has cemented the New York producer's reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now.Side A features Tale of Three Cities' (Mike Maurro Disco Remix), one of The Salsoul Orchestra's funkiest cuts, written by bass player Ron Baker for their debut LP. Maurro extends the arrangement to nine minutes, concentrating on the driving beat and rhythm section for the intro, subtly adding the guitar and keyboard parts before the first orchestral bridge at 1m36. Stripping back much of the orchestral elements throughout the mix he gives more space to the deftly executed solo guitar and keyboard passages and gives special attention to Vincent Montana's vibes, taking the dancer on a beautiful journey through the Salsoul sound concluding with an instrumental, ethereal outro.

Side AA features Tangerine' (Mike Maurro Disco Remix), Vincent Montana's skillfully rearranged version of the lilting Jimmy Dorsey pop standard which was the group's biggest pop hit, also from their debut LP. Adding a further 6 minutes to the original version, again Maurro respectfully gives the orchestration more room to breathe over the propulsive rhythm section, gaining patient momentum throughout while exposing the best instrumental elements of the original and sprinkling just the right amount of The Sweethearts of Sigma's vocal refrains on top. Both mixes were initially released on Groove Line's 3CD 40th Anniversary Salsoul Orchestra Anthology as exclusive tracks.

For the fourth edition, the duo left behind their perennial favorite, Trinidad and Tobago, and headed for Jamaica and Brazil, trekked across South America to Peru, navigated across the Pacific to Japan, down to Australia, and then set sail for South Africa, went overland up to Tunisia, and finally put down their bags in France.
Along their perambulations around the globe, they handpicked a number of rare and often unique pearls that they found, at times in damaged shells, at others barely surviving in abused, large record collections. Guts and Mambo patiently selected these tracks with the intent of creating a vinyl barrier reef, an atoll of sound safe from the rising tide of noise pollution that the music industry spews forth every summer.

The 2016 edition once again treats listeners to an incredible diversity of styles and ambiences, ranging from jazz-funk to samba-rock, disco, soul, and reggae. This in a year that football fans will remember as that of the Euro Cup in France, and music fans, when Bowie, Maurice White, Bernie Worrel, and Prince all left us too soon to search for eternal inspiration in the great musical beyond.

'Energy MC2' began as an energetic bunch of 10 and 11 year old neighborhood kids, who initially formed a band under the name of 'Congressional Funk' while still attending elementary school. The founding members were Vincent Bonham, Opelton Parker (the brother of Ray Parker Jr) and brothers Ufuomo and Eric Wallace, with the later addition of a further member Fred Gordon. A little over a year later, they initially became the backing band for local Detroit recording artists Mad Dog & The Pups going on to feature on some of their earliest Magic City releases Hep Squeeze' (MC-007) (which they provided the horn section on) and the follow up release Funky Monkey' (MC-009). A name change to 'The Soulful Hounds' followed which they are credited as on the instrumental flipside of Mad Dog & The Pups vocal version of Why Did You Leave Me Girl' Magic City (MC-012).
After leaving Magic City, the band went through several changes in both name and personnel and became one of the biggest bands on the local Detroit music scene. At this point the band hired a bass player Ben "Rat Bass" Adkins, who brought with him the name of his former band, 'Energy'. By then borrowing Albert Einstein's formula for special relativity (E=MC2) and adding it to their inherited name 'Energy' they finally became 'Energy MC2' (a move deemed necessary to distinguish themselves from Adkins former band).
As Energy MC2 the band soon began to seriously record original material which included the previously unissued 70''s track If You Break It'. The group line up on If You Break It' included Vincent Bonham, Ufuoma Akill-Wallace, Arnell Carmichael, Ernestro Wilson, Opelton Parker, Gordon Carlton, Eric Wallace, Leon Lopez, Marvin Carlton and Marlene Rice. While an earlier session had too yielded a further two previously unissued songs firstly the flipside of this 45 Other Side Of The Mirror' which featured the same line-up of musicians as If You Break It' but with the addition of a second female vocalist Gwen Laster, while the second song Juliane' a beautiful mellifluous ballad can be found on the 'We Got A Sweet Thing Going On' volume 2 SJCD 5011 cd album.
A later collaboration with Opelton Parker's brother, Ray (Parker Jr) would see Energy MC2 members Vincent Bonham and Arnell Carmichael leave to become part of the Band 'Raydio'
later to be known as 'Ray Parker & Raydio'. While other Energy MC2 musicians became part of the band 'Parlete' (part of the P-Funk family) helping George Clinton land the Mothership!.

"The greatest dub album ever" (Jon Savage: author of England's Dreaming) / "Essential" (Steve Barrow & Peter Dalton: Rough Guide To Reggae). "Pick A Dub" showcased the enduring strength and pivotal importance of the rhythm to the development of reggae music. Keith Hudson's complete mastery of the genre and the unqualified praise that followed its release was fully justified. The album's 'austere sonic qualities' are awe inspiring, the superb rhythms are given full rein, unencumbered by extra effects and studio trickery. The overall effect is as mesmerising now as it was over forty years ago. The CD comes in a digipak with additional 12-page booklet and contains as extra tracks eight vocal cuts of the featured dubs including two previously unreleased tracks. As well the 2LP-set is extended to 20 tracks, the original album on side A and B, side C and D have the extra tracks of vocal cuts of the dubs including two previously unreleased ones.

Eleven elegant instrumental tracks, and one female vocal, showcasing the tenor sax artistry of master musician Roland Alphonso, ably assisted by Aubrey Adams on organ and the inestimable Lynn Taitt on guitar, interpreting a selection of Mrs Pottinger's most memorable hits of the era.

The second release on the Excursions imprint, following on from 'A Soviet Disco Excursion Vol 1', this time a trilogy of treats from French duo DJ Soulist and Fulgeance, aka Souleance. These guys have been busily producing a series of delectable releases for a decade now. Crafted primarily with the dancefloor in mind, Souleance weave together an assortment of grooves and genres to magnificent effect - disco, funk and beyond.

'A Raw Excursion' proceeds to give you what you need, with something for all the family amidst this three-track EP. Setting it off, the heavily progged-out thump of 'The Ramble', a solid mid-tempo floor-quaker, flipping the unmistakable weight of Jimmy Page and Bob Plant. This is followed by the 'C'est La Fête' edit of 'A Little More' - a cheeky flip of a classic late-seventies slow jam by Miss Brenda Russell, famously sampled by Big Pun. This one tried and tested over the past few years to crush a lot of dances, now available on wax for the first time for all you players out there.

Finally, we have 'Gypsy' - the most uptempo cut of the set, this is peak-time fire. So much so, you should maybe have some water at hand. An electro-disco tinged take of a chart-topping early '90s house anthem, this concludes the sophomore release on Excursions, and guarantees this one will stay in the record bag for a long time.
