Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London's Royal Albert Hall, L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl and Paris' Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier's Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc's Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label.
The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album I Could Be Happy' and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers.
This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani.
A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

Strut present the first in a series of essential original LP reissues exploring rare and under-rated African, Latin and Caribbean music classics, curated by Duncan Brooker. In January 2017, the series kicks off with 'Sugar Daddy', an experimental highlife / disco outing by Nigerian highlife guitarist Joe King Kologbo.Building his career as a composer and player with Eastern Star Dance Band at their residency at the Atlantic Hotel in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, Joe King Kologbo was forced to flee to Ghana when the Biafran War broke out in 1967. As his son Oghene recalls, when war came, everything just scatter. He lost his house, everything.'Joe King played with a variety of bands in Ghana including Real Ruby's, a jazz highlife big band, before returning to Lagos in 1971. By the time he recorded the 'Sugar Daddy' LP for the tiny Electromat label in 1980, he was one of the older musicians on the circuit. Oghene Kologbo remembers, My Mum used to say, 'I hope you don't go and play guitar everywhere and play around, don't go and be Sugar Daddy!' All my father's friends nicknamed him 'Sugar Daddy' so he did the song in a fun way. He was a nice man. He never did 'playboy'.Since he was based in the East during his early days, he was not as well known nationally as some of the other highlife players of the time,' continues Oghene,'so it's nice that this album is coming out again. It brings back good memories.

After two sold out 12" EPs on Optimo Trax, Boot & Tax head over to mother label Optimo Music for the release of their debut self-titled, 9-track album.
The Milanese duo are comprised of Cristian Croce (already part of The Barking Dogs) and Claudio Brioschi (Brioski), two of the most popular and respected djs/producers of the Italian scene who share a great passion for analog synths and experimentation, and a deep knowledge of both clubbing and production.
Dance albums are notoriously difficult to pull off and often fall flat but Boot & tax succeed where many fail by making a record that will work on open-minded dance floors but isn't necessarily a dance album. Indeed, my 80-year-old stepmother hasn't danced for years but has been listening to this on repeat all month. Incorporating Claudio's guitar playing, Boot & Tax's trademark eccentric instrumentation along with their analogue arsenal and the occasional vocal from Cristian, they have managed to forge a uniquely characteristic sound world.
Playful, psychedelic, hypnotic, captivating, the album comes in a gatefold sleeve on double vinyl and Boot & Tax will be touring live in support of the record throughout the summer and beyond.

The period of the 1960s and 70s was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and rock. Countless of local bands released their music on their own without a label. Chain was one of those bands whose pounding double-sider leaves us standing mouth wide open. Hard drums, sharp horns, raw vocals, and supercool guitar licks. What more can you ask for

It's no exaggeration to say that J:Kenzo is one of the leading lights of underground bass music today. As a producer for labels as diverse, venerable, and crucial as Tempa, Metalheadz, and Exit Records he makes much of the music defining the moment from drum & bass to steppers. He also shapes our listening and dancing through the careful curation of his own Artikal Music UK and Lion Charge imprints, to say nothing of his monthly Rinse FM show and non-stop global touring. Needless to say we were extremely pleased when he approached us with two tunes tailor-made for ZamZam.Without" is a 140 workout, at once minimalist, muscular, meditative and sinister. A deep skanking pad and synthetic percussion set the stage for the leaden kick and steady hi hat pulse calling all dancers. Rockers' drum fill and test tone sprinkle dubwise flavor as the haunting melodics waft through, as hypnotic as smoke trails in a cloudy studio. Without' is perfectly crafted in every respect.
The flip side Within' is another expertly honed journey into deep 140 waters, heavy on the atmospherics that recall wide open vistas and treacherous seas. Synth and bass work as one, surfacing and diving to both anchor and propel a massive riddim both heady and totally physical. The hi hat is again steady with punctuating snares & claps, huge chasms of space open up leaving the listener stunned at the depths within.

Placed within legendary reggae producer Lee Scratch' Perry's prolific discography, The Upsetters Chapter 1 stands out as one of the eccentric genius's most interesting, adventurous works. Using a combination of established collaborators and new musicians, Perry creates a classic dub record that pulses with deep bass, echoing percussion and dissonant sound effects. Spiritual cuts ( When Jah Come') are balanced by grand dub productions ( Tighten Up'), creating a cohesive, infectious sound that rivals the Upsetter's finest material.

On the hot, summer evening of 8th July 2016, Wah Wah 45s and their four-piece soul band, The Milk, realised a long-time ambition as the epic sounds of 'Favourite Worry' filled a sold-out Union Chapel. Taking to the stage at the iconic venue which has been home to some of London's most legendary live shows, from the first Big Chill events to Björk to Terry Callier, was an honour that was understood by all.
So on that night, accompanied by beautiful string and brass sections, the band delivered a live performance that none of the 800 fans, packed into those hallowed pews, will ever forget.
When you mention certain venue names, bands and labels start to think about live recordings and the Union Chapel is one of them. But it was only when drummer and producer Mitch began sending round rough mixes of the recordings that the band and label realised they had something very special on their hands.
Being a great live band is a fundamental part of what makes The Milk who they are. These recordings really demonstrate the closeness of the four men, their solid work ethic, their exceptional ability as performers and their connection with their fans. But above all, it showcases their songs and songwriting in the best possible way.
And while from the audience's standpoint everything sounded and looked grandiose, the band themselves were living a very memorable experience on stage, as perfectly described by Dan Le Gresley below:
"It's very rare that we get the chance to recreate our music live with the same instrumentation and attitude in which it was first created. The ambiance of the smokey chambers of the Union Chapel was strangely similar to the medieval barn from which the music of Favourite Worry was brought to life. We can't put our fingers on why, maybe the history, maybe the sense of solidarity among us - either way, if you were there then you shared in something truly special. It is for this reason that we are very proud to release this show as our first live album - a gig that we will always cherish.
Our eleven strong ensemble did the Gospel-soaked halls of the Union Chapel venue proud and we are very grateful that our wonderful string section and our awesome brass section were able to join us for the night. With their help, we were able to capture, in a live context, a true reflection of the bands soul for the first time."
Whether it's hearing the vast sound of Wanderlust as it steps up that key in the final moments, or revisiting seldom played hits from the first album, 'Tales From The Thames Delta', there is something here for fans old and new.

I can hardly believe the very first edition of the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club came out in 2012 - much time has passed, but my mission remains the same - to give you lucky lucky people another hard hitting selection - a crafty musical right hook, another fist full of funky things - and this new collection packs a hell of a punch!
For Volume 4 - we open up with 3 disco tinged bangers, Kylie Auldists' Family Tree will transport you directly onto the dance-floor of New York's legendary Studio 54 discotheque - Smoove & Turrell's cover of Hot Chocolates' You Could Have Been A Lady' has got that Newcastle boogie oogie oogie vibe down - Lexsoul DanceMachine have marinated Beef Grinder in sizzling hi hat cymbals and a spicy clav riff so saucy Stevie Wonder would be shocked!
Add into the mix 3 classics dug from the crates - one from Brian Auger, one of the best Hammond organ players ever, one intensely catchy number from from Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers, and a super rare track from John Heartsman & Circlesthat comes from an album so rare that it has changed hands for $5,000!
Mix in a crop of contemporary funk, soul and latin bangers from acts such as The New Mastersounds, The Tibbs, Lisa Stansfield, Lack Of Afro ft Joss Stone, Sunlightsquare, Marta Ren & The Groovelvets, Flevans, a killer groove from Lance Ferguson's Black Feeling Vol 3, a 100% exclusive track from The Fantastics! feat Sulene Fleming too, and you've got the soundtrack to an instant party on your hands..

In the eighteen months since Gregory Porter exploded onto the international music scene with his debut album Water', he has racked up a stream of awards including a best Jazz Vocal Grammy nomination. He has also appeared live on Later' with Jools Holland, and Jazzwise Magazine voted Water' the best jazz album of 2011. It includes the politically charged 1960 What', the video to which has been on constant rotation on music television. The song with its pulsating beat has also become a dancefloor favourite and has been given a sturdier club feel courtesy of Opolopa on his Kick & Bass Re-Rub'
Gregory Porter as narrator, sounding like Amiri Baraka, declares on 1960 What' that the motor city is burning y'all—that ain't right' and refers to Martin Luther King Jr.'s death and describes trigger-happy policing (supported by a trumpet that blares, jabs, rumbles, and yearns), and the song portrays how certain events turn people against the possibilities of life and light. A vision that only recognizes strength and cruelty and rage is dangerously imperfect: rather, creativity, education, intelligence, sensitivity, democratic political participation, and compassionate social work are goals and virtues that can be affirmed, if not actively pursued, in all times.

Harleighblu X Starkiller is a formidable link-up between British soul/electronic singer Harleighblu and LA duo Starkiller (the production outfit of C.E. Garcia & Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn). A science fiction film in sonic form, the 'Amorine' LP tells a tragic future love story in which high drama collides with a cool, clean, sci-fi atmosphere via hip hop sensibilities that draw on musical references from psychedelic funk to DJ Shadow to Portishead.
It is no coincidence that this project directly follows Harleighblu's 'Futurespective' releases, which found the young singer eyeing the horizon, working with cutting edge electronic producers to forge a new sound. On hearing her music, Garcia was struck by Harleighblu's ability to combine an accomplished, classic soul voice and fresh, future beats, I'd been playing with this idea of making an album that sounded like the future somehow, and I thought 'well this is it - this is the person to work with'', he affirms.
With his love of film, sci-fi and graphic novels, and his tendency not to do things by halves, Garcia was soon envisioning an album set in the future, and concocting the 'Amorine' story around which this LP would revolve. The dystopian tale was heavily inspired by two sources in particular, which were occupying his mind at the time: the comic book The Incal' by French artist Mœbius, and the 1971 George Lucas film THX 1138. Heightening the fantastical nature of the 'Amorine' concept album, the project boasts artwork by top graphic artist Boo Cook (2000 AD, Judge Dredd).

Big Crown Records is proud to present the debut single from Paul & The Tall Trees, Once In A While' b/w The Little Bit Of Sunshine'. Hailing from Staten Island, Paul Schalda's music seems to embody the unexpected overlap of The Band's Americana, Ian MacKaye's unhinged emotion, and the doo-wop melodies his father, Bill Schalda Sr. (a member of Brooklyn vocal group, The Montereys), raised him on. The first single from his forthcoming full length, produced by Tommy Brenneck, Once In A While' is a testament to Paul's sincere and raw emotional song writing. Running the gamut of the forever changing conviction of a man in love, Paul goes from never again to maybe pleading for mercy on his soul. Musically going from a mellow strut to a frantic crescendo carrying the lyrics along for the ups and downs of addiction. The B Side The Little Bit Of Sunshine' is the soul tearing admission of defeat and the long
road to surrender. Easily interpreted as a story about a disfunctional relationship with a unkind, inconsiderate woman, yet truly a story about Paul's giving up on a career in music..

We are extremely happy to forward the first vinyl release from Cheyne Taylor Bush AKA Tetrad, a member of LA's B-Side collective. From the moment we heard these tunes we knew we wanted to get behind them, and behind Tetrad. It is extremely rare for us to hear music from a young, as-yet unsigned producer that immediately strikes us as this fresh, original, mature, and self-aware.
Awaken Dub' is a 140 power stepper driven by a shimmering melodica figure, delicate guitar plucks, insistent photon torpedo snares and pure 4/4 bass and kick forward motion. Awaken Dub' was inspired by Tetrad's return to dub-inspired music' after an absence, and the personal awakenings this return brought him.
Turn 1' is among the best 'proper' dubstep plates we've heard in ages, that perfect combination of eyes-down deep hypnosis for the mind and massive body-blow to the corporeal form. All about movement, Turn 1' is among a set of tunes that got their start on the bus and train, inspired by the bustling motion and feel' of urban transport. From the rocking, lurching drums to the deceptively simple single-note bassline that won't let go, sweeping you away like a wobbling lava flow, to the reverb-soaked voice that is Turn 1"s calling card, this one will focus the dancefloor as few tunes can do.
Mastered and cut by the one Lewis at Star Delta Mastering in Devon.

Seminal early 70's Bahamian Funk of the highest order! The debut LP from the Munnings brothers legendary outfit. "Funky Nassau" is one of the most sought after Soul/Funk records ever with it's highly original blend of US black music styles and Bahamian roots. A very famous band in their native Nassau, the group only had 2 full length albums under their belts along with a slew of 45 singles but have managed to stamp their name on the ears and minds of record lovers since they first burst onto the scene. The obvious track to reference here is the title track "Funky Nassau" a breakbeat fuelled monster dance cut that has supplied hungry samplers with sounds for decades (everyone from The Prodigy & The Roots among those who have used the cavernous drum break!), the rest of this excellent LP also includes the amazing Funk of "Come Down" and a whole host of other brilliant sun-drenched tracks. Absolutely essential. Here's your chance to own a true classic! You'd be hard pressed to find another well rounded debut LP, this one is pure joy from start to finish.
The LP has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. Not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of Miami's TK Disco empire. Now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the Munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality.

'This is a mass culture we live in. It makes you act like something you really aren't. It made me so narrow that I couldn't really do myself justice so I broke away from that whole modern dance thing. I want to be me, I want to be human.'
Doctor Barbara Ann Teer's words on The Radicle's opening jam 'JAS' may have been lifted from an old Folkways record, but that doesn't make the sentiment any less prescient. In fact, these words could have been said by Tim himself in reference to the spirit and ideology of 'The Radicle', only his third ever artist album to date.
Released 30 October on the Seminal Strictly Rhythm label, the album is vastly different from the majority of electronic albums out there. It has a decidedly soulful, blues-y feel and instead of the 'here's ten club tracks, will this do' approach, Tim took his time and immersed himself completely into the record, surrounding himself with some of the best contemporary jazz musicians around, including Jim Mullen (guitar), Rod Youngs and Enzo Zirilli (drums), Pete Wareham (sax), Jay Phelps (trumpet), John Donaldson (piano) and Ben Hazleton (bass).
The Radicle was born out of a pure love of real instruments and instrumentation and a desire to return to the source. 'Working with musicians really inspired me,' comments Tim 'I started having piano lessons once a week with my teacher Cherry and started reconnecting directly with the music via the instrument, rather than going out and listening to old jazz records. With The Radicle I really had the vision about what I wanted to achieve.'
The Radicle is a proper musical trip. And in keeping with the spirit of the record, the look and feel of the actual album reflects that authenticity, with the first promo shoot location being infamous East End boozer The Clapton Heart, where many of the shots were taken on Rolleflex film, cementing the consistency between analogue production and the photos themselves.
The Radicle is a nine track sonic adventure with ideas bursting from every kick and lick. There's even a cover of the Miles Davis classic 'So What!' which bends the trumpet classic into new forms while 'Shanti' explores a more mysticial, Indian vibe with a sax solo John Coltrane would be proud of. There are no synthesizers or electronics on the record: in some respects, it's also a reaction against the electronic world.
