08.12.2017

Before the release of their self-titled debut, the six-man collective of Crash Crew had already released several singles around New York City. Stories go that one of their first, "High Powered Rap" would later be copied by Sugar Hill Records' own Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and form the basis for their first national hit "Freedom", almost certainly leading to animus between the two groups. Regardless, Crash Crew also ended up on Sugar Hill Records, and released their full-length debut through the label in 1984. Crash Crew, along with Treacherous Three, T La Rock, and the aforementioned Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, would become vanguards of the first true generation of early hip-hop music, with Crash Crew in particular being exceptionally good at party anthem raps. Their debut meanwhile would find new life as a crate digger's dream, and prime sample material for De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Black Eyed Peas, and Cut Chemist.

Marcel is at home in the Cuban tradition, but he is also a vibrant
improviser in modern jazz as a member of saxophonist David Murray's group. With the addition of Swedish sax player Karl- Martin Almqvist - a member of the Danish Radio Big Band - Blanco y Negro was reborn. The new Blanco y Negro features the original rhythm section: Jonas Johansen is one of Denmark's leading drummers. He has appeared on more than 170 albums, and he has performed with a long list of international stars including Mike Stern, Steve Swallow and Eliane Elias. Eliel Lazo is word- renowned for his conga playing (Herbie Hancock, the Danish Radio Big Band, Savage Rose, Wayne Shorter),
and Cuban Yasser Morejon is a very popular bassist in many varying contexts. This powerful ensemble plays with an international sound inspired by the heritage of its members - Denmark, Sweden and Cuba - as well as the many places they have travelled digesting the local music.

Hailing from Britain, with origins in Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Vincent, critics and historians agree that the world simply wasn't ready for Cymande. Formed in 1971, the band would become renowned for their progressive, and complex brand of funk music, which fused elements of calypso, jazz, R&B, African music, and British glam rock. Despite touring with Al Green, performing at venues like The Apollo and Soul Train, and having a Billboard R&B hit, Cymande languished in obscurity before disbanding in 1974, only to develop a widespread cult following over the years, and become a treasure trove for crate diggers and beatsmiths. Cymande's legacy began with the release of their self-titled album in 1972. In equal measure, the band's debut emnated with funky grooves, spiritual euphoria, stirring world arrangements, and tightly executed rhythms. Cymande would render dancefloor hits of tracks like "Bra" and "The Message", which reached #20 on the Billboard R&B charts, and help the album develop a new legacy of innovation, decades after its release. Tracks from the album have appeared in tracks by De La Soul, MF Doom, and The Fugees, as well as in soundtracks in TV and film,

from Spike Lee's Crooklyn, to modern programs liks Fargo and Mr. Robot.

Dolores Vargas was our wildest performer, our Spanish Tina Turner, Ikettes-era. In my opinion, she was a better dancer and singer than Lola Flores but she never received the same media attention than the famous Lola. Maybe it's better this way. Dolores Vargas is wine for sommeliers and since now, music for connoisseurs.'- Txarly Brown

Here's an anthology dedicated to the '70s period of Dolores Vargas, known as The Earthquake' due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. In these songs, released 1970-1975 for the Belter label from Barcelona, you'll hear a killer sound and production mixing Funk, Rock and Pop with the powerful vocal style of The Earthquake'.

Including real gipsy-funk bombs like A la pelota' Anana Hip' or La Hawaiana' along with her bizarre cover version of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' and much more.

If you're looking from Flamenco Funk and groovy Rumba Pop, look no further.

Lightnin' Rod is just one of the many pseudonyms used by Jalal Mansur Nuriddin, often referred to as the "Grandfather of Rap." A prolific wordsmith and orator throughout the 1970s, Nuriddin was one of the founding members of the influential poetry collective known as The Last Poets, who have been cited as one of the earliest influences on the development of hip-hop music, breaking ground for the genre with lyrical performances that were frequently political, and emphasized the African-American consciousness. Nuriddin's opus is arguably the first album he released as Lightnin' Rod: a concept album fusing poetry with jazz-funk titled Hustlers Convention. A record which told the gritty, and unabridged stories of two fictional pimps, against a backdrop of urban sprawl and decay, against an instrumental foundation of swaggering rhythms and grooves, provided by top shelf contributors like Kool & The Gang and Billy Preston. Hustlers Convention was an integral part of hip-hop's timeline of development, and though it never received the credit it's long been due, it's considered something of a Holy Grail among crate diggers, and a wealth of sampling content for the likes of hip-hop heroes like Wu-Tang Clan, Madlib, & Digable Planets, and electronic wizards like Aphex Twin, and The Prodigy.

The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their Gipsy-Rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos.

Morena y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed Rumba, Flamenco, Psychedelic Rock, Funk and Disco Music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo.

Here's a compilation spanning 1974-1978, featuring their psychotronic hits like No llores más', Dejé de quererte', Buscando alegría' and more.

Andre Solomko - Le Premier Disco Sans Toi

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Le Premier Disco Sans Toi, new single EP by Andre Solomko, pursuing a collaboration that started more than 5 years ago.

Born in Ukraine in 1965 and now based in Finland, Andre Solomko is primarily a rich and engaging personality, but above all, a brilliant saxophonist, composer and engineer, whose contagious passion cannot leave anyone indifferent. After beginning a meteoric career in USSR, fate led him to Finland, where he started the adventure Vinyl Jam, a label / studio /
group. It resulted in two self-produced albums that will capture the attention of some international collectors, including Pascal Rioux (founder of Favorite Recordings). Between 2012 and 2014, they released 2 albums together, Où es-tu maintenant and Le Polaroid, hailed by many tastemakers and meeting notable success in Japan.
This new single also results from a long and solid partnership, led by a shared and deep passion for analog music and vintage grooves. Announcing a new album planned for 2018, the EP unveils two new compositions with Disco flavors. Andre's backed again by a team of great musicians and vocalists, such as Mr Day and Lili Wagner on Le Premier Disco Sans Toi' (The First Disco without You), or Charlotta Kerbs on Moonbeach Disco'. And if
not really the first, this Disco journey fits perfectly with Andre Solomko's Jazz-Funk style and sense of melody, showing another facet of his many talents.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Book Of Sound

We started with the principle - the cosmic idea that we were taught by our father from a very young age - that the stars and planets make a sound, that deep in outer space there is audible harmony.'With its cathedral-like, richly resonant acoustics, the new HBE album is a brilliant expression of this interplanetary principle. The album is by turns urgent and contemplative, funky and reflective, varied in its textures, but entirely of one piece. Underpinned by concepts of our earth's place in the cosmos, held in place by meditation, swirling with notions of history, science, theology, ancestry, there is a rich conceptual brew here. But always, what talks loudest is the music. The album rings with what back in the 1950s the jazz critic Whitney Balliet called the sound of surprise'. At a time when the phrase Spiritual Jazz threatens in some quarters to become a tired cliche, this is a record that makes you believe again in the genre's validity.

Talking to Cid, one of the Ensemble's two trombonists, one phrase recurs: back to the beginning'. We wanted to go back to the beginning, when we were kids, real young, and our father would wake us up at 5 AM to practice for two hours before breakfast.' One outcome - initially unplanned but subsequently embraced - is that unlike their two previous albums on Honest Jon's, this is an album without a drummer. When we started, as Wolf Pack, just brothers on the street with our horns, there wasn't a kit in sight.' Book Of Sound retains plenty of rhythmic heft, but the absence of a drummer opens up space for a notably varied instrumental palette. Acoustic guitar, piccolo, synthesiser, alto sax - none of them typical HBE Instruments - all have their place on the album. Most striking perhaps are the vocal lines that thread through the album and give it a palpable warmth. In Wolf Pack, we rapped and played, this time we took it a step further.'

Sessions were recorded in Brooklyn and Chicago, and brilliantly mixed at Abel Garibaldi's studio in the Loop ( Abel was like a musician on this record'), and it's the Hypnotic's hometown that permeates. For Cid this is a deeply Chicago record: it's got the vibe of the lake, the vibe of the prairies opening up to the west'. It also has the vibe of those Sun Ra Arkestra albums recorded in Chicago in the 1950s, and - of course - the Phil Cohran albums from the 1960s.

It's Phil Cohran (the father of all seven members of the Ensemble and their first teacher, and not just in music) who is the album's guiding spirit. For Cid it's a major regret that, in the months before their father's death early in 2017, Phil was not well enough to play on the album. He loved the whole idea, and we had the perfect place for his zither'. But Book Of Sound is a magnificent testament to their Cohran legacy. You know, it's tough trying to satisfy everybody with our music. It's hard enough satisfying ourselves, let alone the jazz scene, the hip hop guys, what have you. With this album we just dropped all that as a consideration, and tuned into deeper principles.'

Teo Azevedo - Grito Selvagem

Released in 1974, Téo Azevedo's first album Grito Selvagem ( Wild Shout') is an irresistible blend of soul and rock with an unmistakable Brazilian character. As many other lost gems of time past, the album found little commercial success, and still during the 70s Téo turned forever to the true Brazilian popular music - the forró, the roots of sertanejo and the rhythms and traditions of Brazil's often forgotten countryside - becoming, from then on, a genuine cultural reference in Brazil not only as musician and composer, but also as a poet and researcher of popular folklore, being awarded the Grammy Latino prize in 2013.

This career turn also contributed to push Grito Selvagem' onto the dusty and forgetful shelves of time, until its rediscovery in recent years by DJs and record collectors. With lyrics reminiscent of the life in the city and the countryside, the album is one of Brazil's forgotten treasures, with arrangements and production by Téo in partnership with maestro Daniel Salinas - producer / arranger very active in the Jovem Guarda movement, and known to collectors for his 1973 album Atlantis-, ten tracks which deliver the unmistakable groove you'll only find in Brazilian records from the 70s. If you like Luiz Gonzaga, Tim Maia, Jackson do Pandeiro or Gilberto Gil, get ready to hear Téo Azevedo and his Grito Selvagem!

Comes with full-size Poster / info insert in English and Portuguese revealing the full, undisclosed story of the album. Includes free Digital Download Card.

In his late teens Rev. Gary Hairston wasn't only serving the Lord, he was also a member of funk outfit OPUS 7, that recorded the great album "Thoughts" in 1979. Although it was distributed nationwide, the group album was not very successful. In 1983 the Winston-Salem, NC native Gary Hairston delivered the now mega rare album "Chilling Out", his debut solo-album under the moniker GARY. It was recorded under the auspices of legendary musician/producer Harry Deal at his Galaxie III studios. Now the album is a well sought after electro, funk and boogie classic, and EVERLAND is proud to present the very first and official reissue of this previously almost unobtainable private press nugget.

Originally released in 1978, it's the only known album by this super hot Atlanta, Georgia band. The Chapparrals were known for wild onstage antics, deep funky sounds and for taking no prisoners when they opened for any of the numerous recording acts they had the pleasure of working with back in the '70s. These guys are a perfect summation of popular funk groove as their album is a blistering blend of bassy rhythms and tight instrumentation. It also includes mighty sweet keyboards that sneak wonderfully alongside the guitar and horns, sometimes with wild moogy touches that are almost P-Funk. They performed with notables like The Commodores, The Isley Brothers, Sly & The Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, Graham Central Station, Kool & The Gang, Parliamant/Funkadelic and many others. This great album is a compilation of hot, stingy tunes with horns, smooth ballads with strings, featuring both fast and slow funky songs with heavy rhythmic passages. A surefire holy grail funk and soul LP!

African Music Machine - Black Water Gold

Session bassist Louis Villery formed African Music Machine in the 1970s as an eight-piece outfit of instrumental funk, which would gradually become the house band of the Jewel/Paula record label. Their distinct style of performance blended the classic sounds of deep funk music with their own New Orleans creole influences, and made its way onto singles and releases by Fontella Bass, Roscoe Robinson, Bobby Patterson, and many more. It was Patterson's own subsidiary label Soul Power which released African Music Machine's own singles from 1972 to 1974. These singles would provide a well of material for beatsmiths, and would later be compiled into a collection titled Black Water Gold. Highly recommended for the 70s-era James Brown maven in your life.

Even if Hamilton Bohannon had never started his own solo musical project, he would have a long and rich background to his name. Before the 60s had ended he'd played in local bands with Jimi Hendrix, toured as a drummer with Stevie Wonder, and served as the bandleader and arranger at Motown, providing backing for top-like acts like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and many more. Gradually he made his way to Los Angeles to sign with Dakar Records in 1972, recording and releasing his debut album the next year, after recruiting a backing band which included session giants like Ray Parker Jr, Wah Wah Watson, Eddie Watkins, and Leroy Emmanuel, to name but a few. Stop & Go was released in 1973, and featured a tried and true formula of hard-hitting, bass-heavy, accented disco-funk. Although the album was only a muted success on the Hot 100 charts, it excelled on the club charts, making dancefloor hits out of tracks like "The Pimp Walk", "It's Time For Peace", and "The Stop & Go." It also featured Bohannon's most well-known tracks, in the club banger "Save Their Souls", which over time became a frequently-used well of sampling material, notably on tracks by Jay-Z, Large Professor, Kool G Rap, Public Enemy, and DJ Vadim, among many others.

Though their debut album was not a monster hit for Cymande, it allowed them enough fortunes to re-locate to the US, where they further developed their distinct blend of world-influenced funk, and took in the political climate. Their stay in America led to their 2nd album, 1973's Second Time Round, which cultivated afro-inspired arrangements, as well as fusions of reggae and jazz, and a touch of social commentary thrown in. While Second Time Round didn't reach even the minor level of success of Cymande's debut, it did render a dancehall monster in the track "Fug", and numerous other underrated soulful classics. A definite must for any deep funk historian worth their salt.

Straight out of high school the singer and multi-instrumentalist Donny McCullough was hired as a staff writer for Motown Records. While there, Donny learned from the best as how to write, arrange and produce music. After leaving Motown Donny started his own independent label EMC Records at the young age of twenty four and recorded his very own album From The Heart. This great soulful funk LP was first released in 1981 and features many musicians who later made international fame, such as his schoolmate Dorian Holley, who sang with Michael Jackson for over 30 years. This beautiful re-release comes straight from the source and will deservedly put full attention once again on this rare but classic funky soul LP.

Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers - Jungle Fire

- First-ever audiophile-quality 180gam vinyl reissue

- Lacquers cut by Kevin Gray, Cohearent Audio

- Old-school style tip-on jacket

- Includes Jazz Dispensary Authorized Dealer' window cling

This is the first-ever audiophile quality vinyl reissue of Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers' incendiary boogaloo getdown. One of the greatest albums by this funky Latin combo! The record differs from some of their earlier Prestige albums in that the tracks are longer, more instrumental, and have a hard fuzzy electric groove.

The band jams hard in a way that's more like some of the funk combos of the early '70s, than the Latin groups from which they came — the results are wonderful! Includes two funky numbers written by Sonny Phillips — "The Spokerman" and "Jamilah" — plus a great extended cover of "Cloud Nine." Great horn work from the funky Pazant Brothers, plus Seldon Powell, who also plays flute and tenor on the album — and other jazz funk stars on the album include Bernard Purdie, Billy Butler, and Neal Creque, Pucho's right hand man!

Does this need an explanation My two favourite DJ sides from Stark reality catalog, for Say Brother I fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so I cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. On the flip we got Bustin' Out of Doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. To make it extra cute I used the o.g Hoagy Carmichael's Music shop illustration.. 500 only, no repress.

Sunny & The Sunliners - Put Me In Jail / Open Up Your Love Door
  • A1: Put Me In Jail
  • B1: Open Up Your Love Door

Following up on the success of Sunny & The Sunliners Mr Brown Eyed Soul' LP, Big Crown drops another must have 45 for the record lovers. Side A is a Sunny classic, Put Me In Jail' is easily one of his most famous original tunes. Sunny croons on, professing his guilt in coming up short on his promises to his beloved over the unmistakable Sunliners band backdrop. This tune has gone on to become famous amongst both oldies fans and lowriders. Side B is an obscure album cut lifted from the Young, Gifted, and Brown' album, Open Up Your Love Door'. Another perfect combination of romantic pleading and organ heavy production leading it's way into a surprising horn arrangement and climactic breakdown. Sunny asks his love to allow him into her life and give their love a chance. Another killer two sider wrapped up in a gorgeous picture sleeve we made from one of The Ozuna's personal photo collection. One side of Put Me In Jail, one side of Open Up Your Love Door...two sides to every story.

The 1970s saw the rise of Funk as we now know. Nothing fueled the 70s funk revolution quite like George Clinton's massive musical collective known as Parliament-Funkadelic. One of the main contributors to the P-Funk sound was Cincinnati native and former JB's member Bootsy Collins. Literally, there would be no Mothership without Bootsy, aka Bootzilla, a true monster on the bass. 1980's Sweat Band was originally envisioned to be the 5th release from Bootsy Collin's funktacular Rubber Band. But somehow Bootsy lost the rights to the Rubber Band name to, of all things, a folk act. But rest assured, though the name may be slightly different, all the funk is intact. For this outing Bootsy's background with James Brown and as a major contributor to the Parliament Funkadelic family are in full effect. Players on the project include Michael Hampton and Garry Shider on guitar, Bernie Worrell on the keys, as well as a horn line comprising Fred Wesley, Richard Griffith and Maceo Parker. And being that this is a full-fledged P-Funk outing, George Clinton himself is Executive Producer. Anchoring the entire project, the amazing bass work of the one and only Bootsy Collins.

The Holidays - You Make Me Weak/im So Glad (that I Met You)

There were several groups within the Detroit music scene that shared the name of 'The Holidays'. From the 1950's through to the late 1960's our version of The Holidays who took their name from a group members car, a 1954 Oldsmobile 'Holiday', would record for the Star-x, Markie, Master and Holiday record Labels. Founding member James Holiday would also briefly pursue a solo career with releases on the Markie, Syco and Blue Rock labels respectively.
In 1969 James joined by his brother Jack, a baritone saxophonist and the former leader of the band within influential Detroit DJ 'Frantic' Ernie Durham's legendary Gold Room at the 20 Grand Theatre. The brothers together, with Maurice White and former Contours member Joe Billingslea formed 'The New Holidays' who recorded the 'Popcorn' Wylie produced song Maybe So, Maybe No' (Soul Hawk 1008). This current in demand 45 featured If I Only Knew' on the flipside, an excellent cover version of a previous Jimmy (Soul) Clark recording If I Only Knew Then (What I Know Now)' This was recorded at a later session to Maybe So, Maybe No' and featured a slightly different line up with Joe Billingslea making way for a youthful Elliot Smith.
By 1972 The Holidays found themselves without a label, so they formed their own, Marathon Records. Their initial release was the excellent double sider I'm So Glad (That I Met You)/Too Many Times' (Marathon 257). Both songs were written by James Holland and Sylvester Potts another former member of the Motown group 'The Contours' and were recorded under the artist name of 'The Fabulous Holidays.
Into 1973 and their next release was the soulful ballad Getting Kind Of Serious' (Marathon 18475) a Fritz Hale and Fredrick Charles Hawkins composition backed with an instrumental version. Followed by Ego Tripping' (Marathon 18475) an upbeat funky little mover backed with the ballad Lazy Day' written by James Holland, Anthony Hawkins and Fritz Hale.'
During 1975 The Holidays resumed their acquaintance with former record store owner Ronald Holmes a collaboration which led to the release of another excellent double sider This Is Love b/w The Love We Share' on the Rob-Ron (RR-75) label. The Love We Share' was recorded twice. Firstly as the issued 45 version under the shortened title of The Love We Share' and as an unissued longer version under the title of (Been Together Too Long) The Love We Share' with slightly different lyrics. During 1976 a further Holland/Holmes collaboration saw the release of the message song Procrastinate (Why Do We)' (Ron-Hol 76). After this release Ronald Holmes and the Holidays parted company.
During late 1976 into 1977 the Holland brothers wrote and produced two further songs which they recorded with Charles Hawkins (a founding member of the Psychedelic Rock and Funk Band, 'Black Merda') The up tempo dance track You Make Me Weak' and the less frenetic Lost Love' although never issued at the time both songs can be found on the recently released Soul Junction cd album Getting Kind Of Soulful' (SJCD5012). A later discovery of a alternative take of You Make Me Weak' (Take 2) is now available on vinyl for the first time backed with their uptempo dancer I'm So Glad (That I Met You)' The Motorcity continues to yield its long lost legacy.

Andy Cooper - Here Comes Another One / The Perfect Definition

This rare 12" outing from Rocafort Records features the rapping and production talents of Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling/The Allergies). Taken from the forthcoming album 'The Layered Effect', both tracks throw you around the hip hop boxing ring, slapping you hard with the prerequisites needed for microphone supremacy. Lyrically tough and musically nimble, Andy swings at you somewhere between the artful dodger and a heavyweight pugilist.

The irresistably bouyant 'Here Comes Another One' opens by means of an elegant old jazz trumpet whose player states "rhythm is my business". Get the picture It's a choppy, jazztastic journey. Cleverly underpinned by a gorgeous jazz piano, horns, sharp beats and aural treats, suddenly mashed up by a reggae toasting session on speed courtesy of Blabbermouf.

'The Perfect Definition' has a heavier step and a more serious punch. Fresh and funky attitude meets a deeply earnest reverence towards microphone art, a theme echoed throughout the LP and cherisheddearly by Cooper.

Two tracks that certainly roll with the punches.Out in November. A sure tonic to the winter blues.

Boca 45 (Scott Hendy) immersed himself in all things Hip Hop from a young age and has been unleashing productions upon the world for the last 20 years under his various guises. Kicking things off as part of Bristol's now legendary Purple Penguin he then went on to form Dynamo Productions with Portishead's acclaimed resident Dj, Andy Smith. The duo found a new place musically, fusing the best elements of Hip Hop, Funk and Beats and it was no surprise when they picked up a residency at Fabric Live and found themselves taking their new sound across the globe. Hot on the heels of Dynamo Productions' great success, the debut Boca 45 Lp was delivered for Manchester's Grand Central Records to huge acclaim. Collaboration has always been an important part of Boca's DNA and along the way further collaborative projects continued to develop: "The BeeKeepers" (with Parker), "BocaWoody" (with 2 time world champion DJ Woody), "Malachai" (with singer Gee) on Domino Records - which was named Zane Lowes hottest record of the week! Its been quite a journey.

In support of the recently released compilation album Boca45: Bombs From The Vaults, Bombstrikes release this very limited run 7". On the A side 'Bear Pit' (named after an under pass in Scott's native Bristol where men would actually fight with Bears as a form of entertainment!) is delivered alongside the always on point Mohawkestra! Whilst the AA side sees Boca 45 join forces with The Heavy's vocalist Kelvin Swaby to great effect. An essential purchase.
