With production credited to Jake Sollo protegé Lemmy Jackson, both tracks here are stunning - 'Enjoy Your Life' is a proper funk bomb with heavy bass, gorgeous layered strings and a faultless vocal performance from Ms Onyioha while 'I Want To Feel Your Love' is an irresistible smooth sweet gem, with Oby's serene vocals light as a summer breeze over the top of a serious Afro boogie groove. Rewind to 1967 and Sly's debut LP 'A Whole New Thing' with The Family Stone containing the super funky break, Trip To Your Heart, which was sampled by LL Cool J here on the flip, but surprisingly never before released on a 45....until now!

After dropping 2 ep's (The Lover, Sugar And Spice) and a breakbeat hardcore full length (Pacific) earlier this year, Coco Bryce is set to wrap things up for 2014 with "Cold As Ice", a 4 track exploration of instrumental hip hop and skweee. Where both "The Lover" and "Pacific" were heavily inspired by 90's Rave and Hardcore, most of "Cold As Ice" is built around a framework of samples taken from various ethnic styles of music, ranging from steelband percussion from the Dutch Antilles on "Voodoo", to traditional African chants and instruments on "Selesha" and ep opener "Love Fool". Of course there's no shortage of drums on there either: Coco returns to the "classics", not just for "his next number", but for all 4 of the songs featured: chopped up funk breaks and old school drum computer programming make for a sound that'll leave you wondering if he might've grown tired of trapped-out 808 beats over the last year or so. Which is not really the case. It's just that gritty old drum samples seemed to fit the gritty old African samples better than a series of triplet hi hats pulled from a Roland sample pack.

Annonymous super-producer takes a swing at the widely distributed multitracks of this tune, to great effect. A has pumped up FUNKY beats & swirly vocals. B is a fairly stock mix, but has all the vocals backwards, which is surprisingly emotive. Deep.

The remix duties are in good hand with all experts within their fields starting with DJ Maars from down under, who is true master in skanky reggae mash-ups - Mr. Rory Hoy who is skillfully keeping alive the sounds of the big beat era and finally a true BBP all-star Jayl Funk who specializes in anything funky for the dancefloor.

Mark Ronson releases his eagerly anticipated new album,
'Uptown Special, January 19th on Columbia Records. The explosive
first single, 'Uptown Funk', featuring Bruno Mars, is the number one single in the UK.

'Uptown Special', Mark Ronson's fourth album, was written and produced with Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Drake, Alicia Keys) over 18 months in London, Memphis, LA and New York City. The majority of the album's lyrics were written by Michael Chabon, Pulitzer winning author.

I wanted lyrics to push farther than most of what's going on in R&B and pop today,' says Mark. I wrote Michael to ask if he'd be interested in writing lyrics for the album.' To his surprise, Michael, a huge pop fan, said yes and quickly became immersed in the project.

Early on in the process, Jeff suggested a Southern USA road trip. The two held an audition at the Penguin on the campus of Jackson State University in Mississippi and discovered Keyone Star - a cool looking girl with an amazing rasp in her voice' says Mark. She sings lead on 'I Can't Lose'.

Also crucial to the sound of the album is Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, who sings lead on 'Summer Breezing', 'Leaving Los Feliz' and the ethereal 'Daffodils'.

The wonderful cast of characters also includes Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt, Mystikal, producer Emile Haynie, Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford, DJ Zinc and Stevie Wonder.

Al Hudson & The Soul Partners had an international smash hit with You Can Do It in 1979, becoming One Way in the process. The Detroit origin of the group was just four years earlier, their recordings for ATCO opening doors to worldwide success and becoming highly sought after 7 single.
An original I'm About Loving You sold earlier this year for $200 and When Youre Gone has fetched close to that value. As a spin off from the ATCO Years CD, bringing these recordings together for the first time, this double header shows the class, sophistication and quality of the recordings.
The songs are still massive in northern and modern crossover soul circles. Release co-incides with the first UK show by Al Hudson & The Soul Partners in January 2015, their first show here for 35 years

A brand new, strictly limited edition 7" and digital release from Fresh Up Records, Ed DMX's label that specialises in authentically old-school but never heard before synth funk, Moog disco and library sounds.

"An Evening At Bunsley Hall" is a library funk party jam led by a vintage string machine melody over a Roland TB-303 bassline (being used the way Roland intended back when they thought it was going to replace bass players.)

"Behind The Scenes" is an excerpt a BBII jam session featuring some bass guitar pulling, funky synth and plenty of guitar solos.

The Martin Brothers are pioneers of the Nigerian Funk and Afrobeat scene. Besides many releases under their own name, as the Tabansi Studio Band they lit up innumerable recoding sessions — it's them on Pax Nicholas' Na Teef album, for example; and the same team is behind the legendary Saxon Lee & The Shadows International LP.

Money is the Martins at their deepest and heaviest — tearing, wailing, mid-seventies funk, heady with spirituality. Superbad from start to finish with no let-up.

Original copies are amongst the most sought-after of all African and funk records on the international collectors' scene. It seems there is just a tiny handful of copies at large.

The tracks were originally laid down at Ginger Baker's ARC recording studio in Lagos and later mixed down at London's Tin Pan Alley Studios. The audio restoration and remastering for this re-issue was done at Abbey Road.

With his second album 'Paradise Lost', Renegades Of Jazz opens the doors to a new personal und musical perspective. 'I've been to paradise and then lost it,' says David Hanke, head of ROJ, about his new collection of songs. 'I guess I can speak for many others who have been thrown out of their personal paradise.'

The inspiration for the twelve tracks on 'Paradise Lost' goes way back into literary history. 'I bought a 19th century edition of John Milton's epic poem and was thrilled by the story of fallen angels, death, the evil and the devil. They have Gustave Doré's illustrations, and I was totally entangled by their sheer presence. That's how I wanted the album to sound like: Dark, mysterious and unpredictable.' For David Hanke - Paradise Lost' is also a kind of coming home. He spent his childhood growing up in Tanzania/Africa surrounded by native African music. When his family returned to Germany, he pursued this interest by listening to his parents' record collection. In the 1990s Hanke got infected by the Northwest-Rock explosion, which ruled his teenage years. Then he discovered the world of sampling and fell in love with Funk & Soul. After teaming up with Deli- Kutt as Mash & Munkee he started Renegades Of Jazz in late 2009, finding inspiration in his grandmother's vintage jazz records. His debut album 'Hip To The Jive', along with several singles and EPs, was released in 2011 on Smoove's Wass label in the UK. In 2013 ROJ took over the DJ residency in Hamburg's legendary Mojo Club. The music of 'Paradise Lost' has been there all the time, somewhere, 'but now, at last, I had the chance to record and release it.'

- Paradise Lost' kicks off with - Haunting The North' a sinister instrumental trip full of disturbing and haunting sounds. - The album was mostly recorded during dark winter nights. The process was actually a lot of fun, even if it may not sound like this. When you get the creeps during your own recordings, there is something special going on for sure,' Hanke remembers. When 'Paradise Lost' is melting into the futuristic, orchestral title track it is obvious that we are on an intense and captivating journey, joined by an impressive list of guest vocalists going through a whirlwind of emotions. - Flemish Cap', for a start, features the voice of Karin Ploog. - Karin is amazing,' Hanke explains. - She is a respected vocal teacher, won several awards for her work in opera and theatre, travelled the world and is truly inspiring.' Having Jane Kennaway as the second guest vocalist on - Paradise Lost' is a little bit of a dream come true. - She has this fantastic raw voice and incredible dynamics. Jane was on the rise to being a UK pop star in the 80s, but as stuck in frustrating major company politics. I am so happy to have her here.' A unique collection featuring four rarities from the early career of genre-straddling New Wave heroes Talking Heads that all became hits on the underground dancefloors of New York and Chicago. It is 1983 and you've just stepped into your Ford Capri with your girlfriend Julie. You live in Harlow, but in your head you're really somewhere near Salou in Spain, next to your yacht. But the thing you really love is soul and they play nothing but at Sups in Loughton. OK, so It's not 1983 at all. It's 2014, but listening to this electrofied soul, will put you back in the zone. Tom Findlay, one half of Grammy-nominated Groove Armada, has put this collection together: a stamp of authenticity in itself. Tom has also put a few of these through the edit wringer, reworking many of the tunes for maximum towelling sockability.

You'll probably recognise a few tunes. There's Mtume's incredible 'Juicy Fruit', still sounding advanced and modern, while 'I Specialize In Love, mixed by disco legend Tee Scott, is even older yet sounds equally perky.

The 1980s was a period that was pretty much owned by Minneapolis thanks to Prince and former cohorts Jam & Lewis and the latter weigh in with a pair of killer productions, Thelma Houston's 'You Used To Hold Me So Tight' and Alexander O'Neal's 'What's Missing'. And since this is Late Night Tales, there is always our exclusive cover version, this time done by Findlay and Tim Hutton's Sugardaddy, who've delivered an ace version of 'Don't Look Any Further'.

Automatic Soul, like my previously compiled Late Night Tales Music For Pleasure, is based very much on a sound. It's a sound that I feel has been overlooked: 80s R&B-infused music, with drum machines, synths and invariably brilliant vocals. It's formed the bedrock of my rare groove sets for all the years I've played. It's not the most fashionable, but to me it's the perfect marriage of technology and soul, hence the title for this album, Automatic Soul. There are plenty of songs I could have included, and no doubt some that I shouldn't, but I've tried to represent what's best to me from this era. It's not a classic Late Night Tales. It's a pretty personal journey, which I hope some of you might be willing to share... Tom Findlay Groove Armada September 2014.

Rare and highly sought after in its original format, Os Brazoes self-titled album was originally released on RGE Discos in 1969. It is a psychedelic masterpiece that fuses samba, r'n'b and rock 'n' roll influences using fuzz guitars, synths, percussion, lush vocals and effects.

Os Brazoes formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1960's. They backed Gal Costa during her Tropicalia period, yet apparently never recorded in the studio with her. Miguel de Deus, the bands front man, recorded the highly sought after 'Black Soul Brothers' LP in 1977, which became an important record in the 'Black Rio' movement. Mr Bongo released the title track from that LP, on the 'Brazilian Beats: Brooklyn' compilation in 2006 and recently as part of their Brazil 45's re-issue series.

The Mr Bongo LP reissue is manufactured in Japan, presented in a super high quality card sleeve with replica original artwork. The CD is presented in a 4-page digi-pack.

Starting things off we have Runnin' Out, a mid-tempo memphis horn-led beauty of a track originally out in 1968. SoulBrigada take the original, toughen up the bottom end, add in kicks, claps and percussion and the odd filter, speed things up a tad and lengthen the track getting the most out of Mable John's effortless and gargantuan diva-esque vocal delivery.

On the flip we have another soulful treat with a killer rare groove cut from 1971. Originally recorded by Lee Sain (and arranged by Charles Miller) SoulBrigada extend the intro, add in drums, samples and effects all adding to a truly infectious groove and vocal that will have you screaming out for more.

After several Funk releases on Perfect Toy Records like the Creative Musicians records and the first part of Tobias´ Movements series PT drops the second part of this rare 45 monster compilation!

Alexia Coley's debut single on Jalapeno "Keep The Faith" gained her a lot of attention both at home where Craig Charles on 6 Music and Robert Elms on BBC London were big fans supporting the single on their shows - and abroad where Italy in particular needed no persuasion to get Alexia on the national airwaves.

Beautiful Waste Of Time was co-written with former Rotten Hill bandmates Gary McPherson and Andre Shapps. Their previous band Big Audio was led by Mick Jones from The Clash and in early live incarnations Alexia found herself singing the song with Mick on guitar.

The song was never committed to record and so with her old bandmates support Alexia re-recorded the single with her current band and with producer Dr. Rubberfunk on mixing duties made it her own.

Her music has a classic soul and jazz vibe but with the edge of a girl who has grown up round Ladbroke Grove and seen what effect modern day London has on people. Her songs are timeless but still relate to kids growing up right now and she can just as often be found sandwiched between a rapper and a DJ on the bill as a line-up of jazz players at Ronnie Scotts.

Label mate Smoove puts the drums to the front for a dancefloor friendly remix that will be tearing up clubs and festivals all summer long.

You should recognise this cut of the kuff riddim from its appearance on Mungo's Hi Fi's 'Serious time' album where Speng Bond sang about an Animal dance. It is a tried and tested boom tune, and here is it with a roaring vocal from gravel voiced Blackout JA licking and kicking down babylon, and completed with the riddim track on the flip. A fine piece of dance weaponry for those fast enough to catch one of the 500 limited copies.

Arguably one of the world's most important underground dance music producer/DJs lends his hands to selecting and mixing a set of jazz and funk records licensed from and originally released on the Black Jazz label 1971-1976. World renowned for his DJ sets, productions, and record label (Sound Signature), this Chicagoraised DJ is near impossible to pigeonhole. Revered by a wide spectrum of dedicated music fanatics, he is known for his edits of artists such as Minnie Ripperton, Roger Troutman, Nightlife Unlimited, as well as his otherworldly DJ sets, and his serious approach to DJ'ing as an art form. Theo gives special attention to fellow Chicago musicians The Awakening (3 consecutive tracks, 4 total on the mix), one of the best funk/fusion groups that the Black Jazz label released, and whose only output was on that label. The set itself is a masterful '2 turntables all vinyl' execution, a format that Theo is dedicated to - no mp3, no CDr, just the vinyl palette for the true aural experience. "Zackey Force Funk was born into this wild world in Tucson, AZ in 1974. In and out of prison since the age of 17, ZFF began producing on pirated software his brother gave to him once he had given up a life crime to focus on writing tunes and raising his family.

First discovered by Kutmah back in the golden era of Myspace, Zackey's signature "Force Funk Sound" swiftly grabbed the attention of a number of formidable producers. Collaborations followed shortly after with the likes of Salva, Lazer Sword, Lorn, Baron Zen, Daedelus and B. Bravo, as well as forming the group Demon Queen with Tobacco. As these tunes were scattered across various labels, finding their homes on their respective collaborator's projects, ZFF continued to hone his style, delving deeper into the psychedelic future funk realm of which he has created for himself. The fruits of his discipline all add up to his forthcoming debut LP entitled 'Money Green Viper", to be released in July of 2014 on LA based collective Hit+Run.

'Money Green Viper' plays as a scrapbook of late night joyrides, fast women, demonic visions, real rap rituals and the ever-present pursuit of infinite paper. All of these tales are woven over dust ridden, boogie and funk influenced beats with Zacky's beautifully haunting vocal stylings as our tour guide. Productions are laced from an appropriate cast of sound architects from across the globe, including Max Kane and Teeko, XL Middleton, Jellphonic, Cupp Cave, Tom Noble, Mike Gao, and of course ZFF himself. Having recently transplanted from Tucson to LA, it seems only natural for the year of the Force Funk Sound to be upon us. 'Money Green Viper' serves as the initial full length transmission of a fantastical mind that has many more stories to tell. We await the dark doctrine with open eyes, ears and hearts."

Following the appetizer of the two 12" singles "Trinidad (Disco Mix)" (EM1128TEP) and "J'Ouvert" (EM1129TEP), we now serve up the main dish, the fine 1977 album Steel Funk by John Gibbs and the Unlimited Sound of Steel Orchestra, a new addition to our 'EM Steel Pan Series'.
Trinidadian steel-pan player John A. Gibbs studied science at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees and formed The Jamaica All Stars Steel Band. This was the start of a dual career in science and music that eventually took him to the United States.
He moved to Philadelphia in the mid-70s and met Philly arranger/producer Louis A. deLise, with whom he collaborated to create a new steel pan music, welding Trinidadian steel music to Philly soul. He researched and advocated a new style of steel pan music, describing the steel pan as an 'omnivibraphone' in his 1978 book The Unit Steel Band, in which he combined his scientific and musical backgrounds to illuminate the physics of the steel pan.
Gibbs' innate musicality comes to the fore on Steel Funk, where he compiles several years of experience with deLise into an appealing Trini-Philly groove union, with the five steel pan players of the Unlimited Sound of Steel Orchestra working in sync with a 30-piece studio orchestra of brass, strings and rhythm. The songs range from Calypso to film theme to pop standard, covers and originals, but Steel Funk is not a chintzy pastiche, it's a glorious unity. We offer this re-release as 'the 2014 version', newly remastered, with improved sound quality, a different track order and new cover art drawn by Yoshihiro Tsuyama/2Yang.

Awesome sounding remastered re-issue of this super-rare underground disco belter from Crosstown Traffic. Originally released in 1979 on tiny Philadelphia label D.C. Records, this highly collectable 12' still gets plenty of playtime today from DJs such as Dmitri and Al Kent. On the A-side 'Party People' slams you hard with funky basslines, furious disco beats, heady 70s synths and a whole load of party lyrics. Truly infectious! Then grooving sideways into your life is the B side's 'Love Your Family'. Yet another disco gem, this tune is mellower yet will still have you running to the dancefloor with its first-class bass guitar riff, deeply-disco tambourines and hand-claps. Great stuff!

Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Italian crime funk heroes Calibro 35 strikes again with another limited edition 45 vinyl. On the A side the new single Butcher's Bride a super groovy and orgasmic hip shaker that features lovely Serena Altavilla on vocals. Pure party sound! The flip side is a brand new killer cover up version of Roy Bud's anthem Get Carter. Persistent and pshychedalic as hell!

Recently sampled by folks like Jay-Z and Damon Albarn, Calibro 35 are a super cult Italian combo devoted to Italian soundtracks music of the 70s. As Rolling Stone Magazine stated "Calibro 35 are the most fascinating, "retro-maniac" and genuine thing, that happened to Italy in the last years". The band landed on Record Kicks last winter, with their fourth studio album Traditori di Tutti. Thanks to a couple of "sold out" European tours that followed the release of Traditori Di Tutti, the guys are quickly becoming increasingly dominant in the International scene, starting to make a bunch of fans all around the world. The 45 is a limited edition to 600 copies worldwide.
