Keyboard - Hungry Man

Keyboard

Hungry Man

12inchSNDWLP065
SOUNDWAY RECORDS
18.08.2014

Originally recorded for the EMI Nigeria label and produced by legendary producer Odion Iruoje 'Keyboard' was a one-off studio project formed by Brodricks Majuwa and Isaac Digha from circa 1978. These two session men were often used at the EMI studio and played in multiple recordings that Iruoje produced throughout the era

This extremely scarce and obscure record features amongst others Ignace de Souza of the Black Santiagos from the city of Cotonou, Benin and Jonni Wood from the band SJOB movement.

Lilting, laid-back, solid, soul-funk grooves and beautiful horn arrangements with synth effects combine for a unique sound but one that is unmistakably from the sound forge of Odion Iruoje and his two front-line studio engineers Emmanuel Odenusi and Kayode Salami. The album is licensed directly from Broderick Majuwa (hailing originally from the Delta region of central southern Nigeria) who played with many bands in the 1970s: starting out with The Severe 7 (a Santana-influenced rock band from Benin City) followed by The Thermometers with Emma Dorgu who cut one 45 for Afrodisia records. Later on he had stints with more famous Nigerian artists Ebenezer Obey and Bongos Ikwue amongst others. The LP is released again after 35 years and strictly limited to only 1000 vinyl copies.

Various - Double Trunk Edits 1

Debut release for this mysterious edits team, Double Trunk Edits, the home of all things Funk, whether its Cosmic, Afro or P or even a little bit Disco, the emphasis is firmly on the FUNK side of things.

A1. To get things started we have a mid tempo Jazz Funk Groove with some serious bass action way ahead of its time!, sharp drums, hypnotic keys and effects, this groove has got it going on thats for sure.

A2. Part 2 of this groove is a much sweeter affair, some damn fine guitar work going on here, and tight musicians delivering the goods once again.

B1. Fat B side, big horns lift this deep groove, nice guitar work and moog synth workout, backed with the occasional vocal, how can you not move to this one.

Ella Fitzgerald - These Boots Are Made For Walking

These Boots are Made for Walking b/w Same Ella needs little introduction to anyone, jazz fan or not. Her place in history is assured and her legendary status unsurpassed. However, although known mostly for her jazz and swing output, Ella was much more than that, as this fantastic recording of the Nancy Sinatra hit testifies. So good in fact that it's something that DJ Jazzman Gerald has played without fail at every single gig he's performed at for the last 10 years, always to ecstatic response! The flipside is another fab version but this time a much more obscure outing from Canadian songstress Muguette. Two killer songs on one 45, can't be bad!

BERLIN, BRISTOL, CAIRO, JOHANNESBURG, KYIV, LAGOS, LISBON, LUANDA, NAIROBI, NAPLES
50 electronic music producers and instrumentalists from these ten cites were invited to collaborate
in studios over the course of more than six months. As a result hip-hop from the squats of Naples,
dubstep and bass from Bristol and Lisbon, experimental techno from Berlin and jazz-tnged deep-house
from Kiev are thrust upon the pumping kuduro of Luanda, the free-thinking crackled electronica of
Cairo, the afro-jazz of Lagos & Johnannesburg, and the Sheng street slang of Kenyan hip-hop and rap.
A selecton of the results of these cross-contnental experiments can be heard on this record.

Lagos Disco Inferno - The Cosmic Return

Voodoo Funk's latest onslaught of blistering Nigerian disco and Afro-funk . Tony Grey's two inclusions, from the early-eighties with the Ozimba Messengers, were originally released on different LPs: irresistible Afro-disco, layered with delirious syn-drums and sick keys, and featuring a horn-line bumptiously whipped from Louis 'Thunder Thumbs' Johnson's bass-playing on MJ's Workin' Day And Night. Originally from Warri where he stayed throughout most of his career, Tony's first band was the Famous Latin And His Dominant Seven. He gigged for a while as a James Brown imitator with The Great Peters, before his breakthrough fronting the Magnificient Zeinians, with some amazing 45s on EMI's HMV imprint — best of all the psych-rock-funk monster Ije Udo. At the close of the 1970s, just a couple of years after the classic psych-funk of Float, Tirogo - Wilf Ekanem and crew - trained their frazzled peepers on Disco. The ensuing Aiye People LP is a stunner and a collector's legend. Afro-fried Kool And The Gang on a mission to 'blow your soul on fire', featuring space-jazzbo Fred Fisher on trombone and the E Gang sisters on sassy backing vocals, Disco Manic and We Like To Party are two standouts. Eno Louis gained a solid background in traditional Edo music as a student in Benin City, south-east Nigeria. He lived at Fela's Kalakuta Republic till the army raid in 1978, when he moved to the US for a couple of years. On his return, he recorded with Edo funk powerhouse The Talents Of Benin, and quickly became a mainstay of the flourishing disco and boogie scene, in-demand as guitarist and drummer. The two tracks here are from Louis' debut LP, Living In The USA. Bayo Damazio's couple of contributions are classy, spaced funk, originally issued in 1981 by Phonodisk, the most ambitious Nigerian label at that time. Recruiting a crack team of predominantly Cameroonian musicians, with the Nigerian dancefloor on tenterhooks, producer Tony Essien was on the lookout for a successor to singer Kris Okotie, who had abruptly defected to EMI. Rising to the challenge, BD enthusiastically fronts two sides of brilliant, devil-may-care disco. An unsung pioneer, Mona Finnih was Nigeria's first female pop bandleader. Breaking through with The Sunflowers in Nigeria's late-sixties soul explosion, Mona moved to the US after the group's equipment was destroyed in a car accident. There she was active in the new jazz scene, before returning home towards the end of the seventies. These two cuts are late-seventies boogie-down cosmic funk, like full-throttle Roy Ayers, at his most brilliant. Finally to the Afro-space-disco contagion of First Planet — shuffling and wiggling, synthy and bubbling — from this re-incarnation of Willy Nfor's Mighty Flames, recruited mostly from the wave of Cameroonian musicians drawn to Nigeria in the late-1970s by its heavy new funk sound. After a stint at the Right Time studio in Onitsha, the FP cadets ended up at Phonodisk in Lagos, quickly in high demand as session-players, running First Planet on the side with other Nigerian session players from the Onitsha/Awka axis. Its name was intended to evoke the cool obliqueness of US handles like Brass Construction and Lakeside, and the mothership connection of chocolate-city P-Funk.

12.11.2014

The Stepkids are a trio who came together in 2009 after a decade of working in bands with some of the industry's biggest names, creating a unique brand of modern psychedelic soul. The Bridgeport CT based band-- Jeff Gitelman (guitar, vocal), Dan Edinberg (bass, keys, voc) and Tim Walsh (drums, voc)—gleefully blend classic jazz, R&B, funk, 70s pop/rock and countless other genres and styles. The release of their 2011 self-titled debut album and the praise for their visually psychedelic live show led to tours with Kimbra, Mayer Hawthorne, Grace Potter, Mates of State and The Horrors. The result of the experience gained and lessons learned since
the release of The Stepkids can be heard throughout new album Troubadour, out September 3rd on Stones Throw Records. The album features 'Sweet Salvation,' released as a single and video in late 2012; 'Moving Pictures,' performed by the band on NBC's Last Call With Carson Daly last fall; and 'The Art of Forgetting'performed recently as part of the 'In The Red Bull Studio' series. RollingStone just premiered new single 'The Lottery' a song that Gitelman describes as being about 'the gamble of different sides of life: The gamble of love, the gamble of business, and the general risk of following your heart.' The Stepkids will continue to bring their music to stages across North America including upcoming performances at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Electric Forest Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, NY. The band also recently launched a series of jazzy covers of pop songs from the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and one of Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky.

Archie Bell & The Drells - Here I Go Again / Tighten Up

This HOT double-A side features the 70s Torch dancer 'HERE I GO AGAIN' - with it's crashing backbeat and fabulous 'call-to-the-floor' intro. The song was originally released in the USA by Atlantic Records in 1969, to little acclaim at the time, but later spiraled to No.11 in the UK pop charts in 1972 due to demand from the Northern Soul scene. 'TIGHTEN UP' was one of the first songs to be recorded by Archie Bell & The Drells, in Houston, Texas in 1967. The track had originally been developed by the T.S.U. Toronadoes and, coupled with Bell's unique spoken introduction, caught the imagination of the nation earning the band a gold disc and a No.1 R&B and Pop smash. It would become a UK Mod anthem and spawned future club hits care of Willie & The Mighty Magnificents 'Funky 8 Corners' and Frankie Crocker's floor packin' 'Ton Of Dynamite' (also available from Outta Sight, OSV106).

Lefties Soul Connection - Akathisia Ep

A new EP by Amsterdam-based funk band Lefties Soul Connection is titled 'Akathisia' and contains six brand new instrumentals with the signature Lefties style: raw, dynamic yet soulful! limited edition.
With Akathisia, Lefties Soul Connection returns to its roots of raw instrumentals stuffed with hard hitting drum breaks, groovy bass lines, chicken guitar riffs and a roaring Hammond organ. Just like their critically acclaimed debut album Hutspot (2006) the tracks were uniquely recorded live - without overdubs - using cassette tapes and a four track recorder resulting in an EP that oozes love for funk and soul.
Title track Akathisia is an instant classic B-Boy anthem due to the powerful combination of a take-no-prisoners breakbeat and a catchy organ loop. By contrast, the sexy and sultry Cheyenne wouldn't be out of place in an Italian B-movie from the '70s. The band is going on a rampage with the unadulterated funky Burning The Cane, while the laid-back song The Waddle sounds like a lost track by The Meters. Finally, both sides of Akathisia end with two ready-to-sample bonus skits for DJs and producers.

The MUKAT Edit series continues plundering deep into the disco & boogie vaults for lesser known slabs of black gold snipping and slicing to

A2. Venezuelan Disco Dementia disposes of the main vocal of fromage and concentrates on those jazzy keys and back vocals which drive the track onto dancefloor heaven.

On the flip more disco string laden rareness with lashings of timbales for Hot Too Hot.... Ep end on Vengeance which originally was a hard to find

T.p.s. (the Preservation Society) - U.f.o.

AVAILABLE AS LIMITED EDITION 7' WITH GREAT HIGH-QUALITY PICTURE SLEEVE
Barry Gray is best known for creating the music for most of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's television series in the 1960s & 70s - UFO & SPACE:1999. While some was released commercially, but now remains out of print, some of his music tragically never found ist way to wax. We always loved the classic Hammond organ sound and thought it would be great to collaborate with Andy Fairclough again to create a new unique version of the soundtrack, especially as the existence of an original 45 of 'UFO' was always a myth. No digital effects, hardware or devices were used at any stage in recording, mastering and pressing this record, the process was 100% analog to tape to lacquer to vinyl in this production, like the intro of 'UFO' which was created with a special, rare vintage type of atonal acoustic musical instrument called 'Waterphone' creating a vibrant ethereal sound. This and the other high quality ingredients like the formidable Hammond organ make these tunes sound as if they could have been recorded any time betwwn now and the late Sixties/Seventies creating two eponymous sci-fi monsters that will destroy any funky retro dancefloor!!

'It may seem far fetched but the parallels are closer than you may think between searching the worlds deepest vaults for lost or undiscovered vinyl treasures, and searching deep space for unseen galaxies, planets and even new lifeforms! Both pursuits involve time, dedication and a relentless hope that the quest will be worthwhile. And with this insatiable desire and determination the intrepid adventurers usually reap the most hearty, satisfying of otherworldly harvests! Both of these worlds collide with the 7" release of "The Preservation Society" "UFO" & "SPACE:1999". These versions have never been heard before, so extremely dedicated explorer of gems of the grittiest rarest, funkiest soundtrack variety will love them to death! These two cult British, funky, epic, Sci-Fi themes were originally written by Barry Gray (in 1969 & 1973) but the originals were sculpted for the title credits, so are relatively short. However "The Preservation Society" a group of top British session players rearranged the themes respecting the original but allowing rocket fuelled Hammond Organ solos, horn blasts, drum breaks, percussion workouts and other worldly sound effects to encapsulate listeners and dancers here on planet earth and beyond!!!' Tara Priya - Who You Do

Tara Priya

Who You Do

7"-Vinyl451037 7"
Mocambo
28.04.2014

Armed with a voice "you just need to hear" (BBC London) and an irresistible blend of snaps, claps, and golden trumpet peals, Tara Priya combines vintage soul, poetic lyrics, and a dash of pop to provide relief from today's Auto-Tune avalanche. Sweet and sour, lovely and lovelorn, her story is as distinctive as her sound. "Sass'n'soul, little bitta Go-Go", says the San-Francisco-native about her music.

Things moved fast ever since Tara's first album on Japanese P-Vine Records was released in 2012 and made #2 on itunes charts. Tara moved to London recently and recorded new material with award-winning producer Steve Booker (responsible for Duffy's worldwide smash hit 'Mercy' and well-known for his work with John Newman, Lisa Marie Presley, Jamie Cullom, among others). "Who You Do" not only shows expertise in production that we haven't heard a while, the post-break-up song also gives way for Tara's distinctive voice and attitude. Both "Who You Do" and the second A-side "Rollin' (off her first album) now see their first, well-deserved limited edition vinyl release. The video for "Who You Do" has already passed the million mark on youtube, so get your copy quick. Ltd. edition.

In 2012, Tara's first full-length album, "Tara Priya", was released exclusively in Japan via P-Vine Records. An exceptional mix of sass, soul, bitterness, & pop, the LP debuted at number two on the iTunes Japan and Amazon.co.jp R&B/Soul charts. Its single, "Run Like Hell", charted for 17 weeks on the Japan Hot 100, soaring to number six on both the iTunes R&B/Soul and Billboard Japan charts. Tara's first EP, also titled "Tara Priya", was released in Summer 2012 via Rockhit Records in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, where it was praised as a "summer pop hit" by Time Magazine. Tara is currently based in London.

Electric Wire Hustle - Love Can Prevail

Okayplayer Records and Somethinksounds join forces to present the New Zealand duos brilliant second LP. Their critically-acclaimed self-titled 2010 debut thrust the group into the international spotlight and achieved cult status following its release, garnering support from the like Gilles Peterson and Benji B on BBC Radio, which has continued with the release of their latest singles If These Are The Last Days and By & Bye. Deep and rootsy the EWH sound draws influence from an array of cultures and traditions, always on the pulse their 'far out' approach to soul, rock, beats and blues separate them from near enough every band in todays contemporary music spectrum. The group recently returned from a string of US live dates, including a much praised set alongside Questlove at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, marking an end to their 4 year hiatus.

Soul Jazz Books - Soul Jazz Records Presents 90 Degrees Of Shade Foreword By Paul Gilroy: Over 100 Years Of Photograph

This book celebrates over 100 years of photography in the Caribbean. From calypso kings to Vodou priests, revolutionaries to dictators, colonialism to independence, slave trade to tourist paradise - the many uses and abuses of the Caribbean are vividly captured here.

The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the outsider as it is the complex identity of its people, a melting pot of races created out of the participants of the 400 year slave trade - enforced Africans, indigenous Caribbeans and their colonisers - French, Spanish, Dutch, English.

From luscious and beautiful backdrop of tourism and hedonist retreat, to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat within North America's backyard, the complex identity of the Caribbean stands at the intersection of tourism, the detritus of the slave trade, the decline of colonialism and the region's tropicality.

The regions politics span an almost constantly changing path of ideas, radicalism and revolutionaries - from Castro's Cuba and Michael Manley's Jamaica, to the violent right-wing dictatorships of Haiti's Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier and the Dominican Republic's Rafael Trujillo.

The hundreds of fascinating and unique photographs featured here illustrate more than one hundred years of Caribbean history, culture and industry as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England, Canada and elsewhere.
