Here we are! The eighth release in the JAZZ DANCE SERIES is soon to be out!

James Edwards Matthews was born in Gloster, Mississippi and later moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He then left St. Louis at six years old to live with his mother in Greenville, Mississippi. His mother built a house in Greenville and opened a club called Desire. James would go to the club's lower level to listen to, watch, and memorize piano techniques from great entertainers in the club's house band.

Lil' Buck is a well known name within collectors of raw soul & funk 45rpm singles. His debut release on the local La Lousianne label became one of the most sought after funk 45s of all time. (Monkey In A Sack b/w Cat Scream) However, he released one more 45 with the Top Cats on La Lousianne which not many people know (Don't Make Me Cry b/w Cat's Back). It will ever remain a mystery why his second release is that much rarer than Monkey In A Sack. Tramp Records is proud to announce the re-release of Don't Make Me Cry with Cat's Back on the flip after more than 40 years of its initial release.

Johnny Heartsman was one of those legendary characters. The veteran Bay Area bluesmen spoke of him with awe and reverence. They talked about a man who played on hundreds of 45s from the mid 1950s until the late 1960s. Heartsman was a master guitar and keyboard player, a fine arranger, and subtle vocalist. He could let loose on the organ as well as flute, the latter he proves on Rudy Lambert's amazing double-sider which was released on the tiny Club 7 label some time in the late 1960s.

Long established R&B essential floor packer that has somehow not been reissued until now. From Sonny Til's long running Baltimore based vocal group The Orioles, this was cut in 1962 and carries that nascent early soul sound that still sounds so fresh all these years later.

Linda Willoby's 'Big Boy You're Through' is a smooth and slinky, minor key popcorn gem that oozes class. Down-tempo, sophisticated, jazzy and moody, this is the kind of sound which defines the popcorn genre. An obscure one for sure, and very scarce on its original release. The flip-side, features a more upbeat R&B mover from Bobby Brookes, and a cracker in its own right, making this another essential two-sider.

As a salsa lover and aficionado, Don Pascal wants his new material to fill the space between house & broken beat rhythms and salsa music, with a focus on bringing authentic salsa piano to the forefront; it was Quantic who hooked him up with some of the musicians to fulfil his ideas, resulting in these two new tracks, 'Tributo' and 'Tumbao'. This release is sure to be popular with fans of Quantic, The Souljazz Orchestra, Buena Vista Social Club and sofrito.

Then, and only then, you will know you've heard 'BodyQuake' the long awaited and eagerly anticipated third album from Laura Vane and The Vipertones! With dance grooves to sustain the heat and ballads to cool you off gently, this album puts ticks in all the boxes! We are also pleased to announce that they have been blessed with very special guest vocalist on one of their new songs. The very talented Jono McCleery with his super soulful and distinctive tone, joins Laura for a duet and brings a sharp burst of contrast and beautiful harmony to the album. Inspirations for the album were delivered by Aretha Franklin, Elle Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Lewis Taylor, Carleen Anderson, Kelis, Michael Jackson , Annie Lennox , Jamiroquai... quite the arsenal of talent, eh Laura Vane & The Vipertones are looking forward to playing plenty of shows in 2014 and making a lot of noise! Those of you that have seen them perform in the past might notice a difference on stage as they've shrunk themselves down to a tidy and powerful 5 piece. The Very Polish Cut-Outs start 2014 with another batch of perfectly crafted and hugely popular tracks presented in a form of label's Sampler Volume Two.

For the spring season, they return to the 7inch format with two brand new tracks by Warsaw duo Ptaki, the same guys who did much applauded 'Krystyna' last year.

Polish duo's next offering is another splendid journey through tons of samples lifted from obscure, disregarded and forgotten records from Eastern Europe (and beyond).
On the A Side you'll find a wonderful summer jam - 'Jak Ptaki' all charming soulful vocals, heavily chopped-up Dilla style, fulfilled with a strong drum break, creating a balearic slice of East European soul.
Definitely one for the beach.

On the B side Ptaki take you on a trip through 'Ponure Miasto' It's a heavier, darker and dubbier affair, clocking in at just under 100 bpm.

Crisp, powerful drums create a pulsating backdrop for some tight bass line, spooky pads and a hypnotizing vocal loop. Dubbed horns and reggae piano increase the tension, exploding in the final part of the track.

This moody, but never sleepy trip combines Caribbean and Polish film music influences with a club-ready groove.

Great reissue of this early 80s boogie classic from Sandy Kerr. With production duties undertaken by Sandy's father, prolific soul writer/producer George Kerr alongside Sugarhill hip-hop/electro artist Reggie Griffin, and engineered by Bob Blank, this is a superb chugging uptempo boogie/rap cut based on a sample from UK band I-Level's club hit 'Give Me' which came out the same year. As well as filling floors across the US it was a big underground favourite in the UK for DJs such as Greg Wilson. Released on small South Carolina label Catawba, this 12' features the killer in-demand dub 'Chimental' version on the flip as well as Sandy's smooth rapping A-side. Don't miss!

One of the most celebrated musicians who contributed to "The Norfolk Sound" was multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, and label owner Lenis Guess. Born on February 27th, 1940, Lenis was entertaining his family at an early age. By the time he was seventeen he joined a vocal group called the Blue Beards and started entering talent shows. Inspired by his talent show success, he decided to pursue a recording career.

In 1966 he signed a contract to record his first release with Frank Guida. The single, "Working For My Baby" b/w "Just Ask Me" (SPQR 1002) would become the record that really launched the long career of Lenis. He would oversee Guida's operation for the following three years and continued releasing 45s on Guida's many labels. In 1969 he founded D.P.G. Records along with Kenneth Deal, a recording artist and George Perkins, a club owner. Tragically, Kenneth Deal was killed in a car accident shortly after releasing "What Have You Heard" b/w "Clown Suit" (D.P.G. 1006) under his stage name Terry Sinclair. Guess and Perkins continued releasing 45s of local talent though, most notably Sir Guy & his Rocking Cavaliers.

In 1970, after Perkins and Guess parted over artistic differences, Lenis and gifted engineer Dorsey "Brock" Brockington opened up their own recording studio, Brockington & Guess, in Norfolk, Virginia. They had an in-house band called Raw Soul which consisted of Barry Saunders (guitar), Maurice Glass (bass) and Grover "Groove" Everett (drums). All three were still teenagers at the time the group was assembled. The three matured into a tight unit and started backing some of Virginia's finest vocalists including Barbara Stant, Lee Fields, Debbie Taylor, Shirley Johnson, and many more.

Souleance are back! Following on from the success of their debut LP 'La Belle Vie' from earlier this year, the French duo have been busy in the studio producing La Beat Tape. 20 tracks deep, the release is aimed squarely at the DJs, with every beat guaranteed to shake the danceflloor.
Souleance are producer Fulgeance (Musique Large / MPM) and DJ Soulist (What The Funk Paris). Since releasing their debut EP (Le Monde) back in 2009, they have built a solid reputation for their idiosyncratic take on modern beats. With fans including Gilles Peterson, Danny Breaks and Mr Thing, their debut album was the culmination of 3 years of beat-making, touring, partying and drinking too much Pimms. Whilst other producers would rest on their laurels after releasing their debut, Souleance got straight back into the studio to produce La Beat Tape - their sole aim to create tracks that they would DJ with themselves. The result is 20 tracks of pure dancefloor fire.
This 7" is our pick of the tracks that we think the DJs will love most. It takes in heavy Turkish breaks (Sauce Samorai), Hammond funk (L'insouleance), Just Blaze-style horn-heavy hip hop (Como Estan Bitches) and loose-limbed hip hop funk (BBQ & Pimms). This limited edition 7" containing features artwork by long-term collaborator Alice Dufay: it's sure to join their previous vinyl releases as a genuine collectors item.

Mr Bongo is proud to release this 2-track 7' from the amazing new album by Hollie Cook. The album is the follow-up to her fantastic eponymous debut album which was released to huge acclaim in 2011, with Q calling it 'gorgeous late '70's style reggae pop' whilst the BBC named it as 'one of the most enjoyable reggae albums of 2011'.

The new album 'Twice' sees Hollie's obvious love of reggae joined by other influences including Bond-like strings, Brazilian percussion, dark disco and shades of Giorgio Moroder. She is joined on the album by Dennis Bovell, Omar, George Dekker and Winston Francis. The strings on the album are the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra and choir. The album was produced by Prince Fatty.

UK based record label Tiger's Milk Records once again team up with Strut Records to release their long anticipated second compilation album, Peru Bravo: Funk, Soul & Psych from Peru's Radical Decade.

Killer funky stoner soul from LA! This album is one of the best by Charles Wright and his legendary funky group and it features some straighter soul material, like the big hit "Loveland", or their mellow take on "Light My Fire" plus some great heavy funk numbers, like "Till You Get Enough", "Everyday People", and "Must Be Your Thing". The record's a huge testament to the strength of the group as they handle the soul material just as well as they do the funky stuff that they're more famous for and we really dig this one for its tightness and straight ahead positive soul!

Bottin is back with his highly collectible Artifact edits. This 12" is dedicated to Lucio Battisti (well known among disco heads for Il Veliero) - here Bottin has reworked some lesser-known songs that take you on a horseback ride revealing the Balearic side of the legendary Italian songwriter. Only 200 copies!

More 'hard hitting guitar soul' from East London band New Street Adventure who are back on Acid Jazz with their new album No Hard Feelings.

The second limited edition 10 inch on the Mukatsuku label is from legendary Nigerian musician Orlando Julius who begun in the 1960's fusing traditional African sounds and rhythms with those of American Soul & R & B. This single as a 10 inch includes two of perhaps his best funk tracks ' James Brown Rides On' flipped with 'Psychedelic Afro Shop' with tough brass stabs, driving bass lines and irresistible, tough afro beat drums. We struggled to get hold of a mint original copy of the original 45 and when we did it was in an overly played condition coming from the collection of digger & DJ , Huw 72. We took the vinyl to Sean P known for his excellent sound restoration skills who begun painstakingly working with the files to bring the vinyl playback to something close of it's original audio quality. It was a tough job. The original 7 inch bizarrely had both sides cut at 45rpm but both A & B sides ran to 6 and half minutes each which is extremely difficult to achieve when you consider that the original 45 was so damn loud. It's worth noting that African pressings in general are often of a certain noisy quality. I've had sealed African records before that have never been played but sound like someone is frying eggs in the background when the needle hits the record !

Number four in the highly acclaimed Supafrico series, this Afro-funk treat will not disappoint. A decidedly upbeat compilation, it kicks off with the dope 1980 afro-style disco corker, 'Musicland' from NYC-based one-hit-wonders Clymax. An energetic boogie drum beat, soaring synths and an incessantly funky bassline makes this an A-class lesson in Afro-hedonism. Next up 'I Feel Funky' from Harry Mosco has you hooked from the first deeply groovy bass lick. Featuring a captivatingly heady synth solo, this track, taken from the 1978 'Country Boy (Mr. Funkees)' LP, is a dancefloor must-have. Flip over for the flute driven afro-disco belter, Tirogo's 'Dancing Machine'. Joyous horns intersperse the chugging beats whilst the hot Afro vocals pay homage to the Jackson 5 classic of the same name. Finally, Bebe Manga's 'Lokognolo' gives you layer upon layer of slick slap guitar, big-ass phat basslines and acid-tinged synths with Bebe smothering the whole lot in a creamy vocal topping. An absolute killer Afro EP that will burn up your record bag and the dancefloor alike

The 'Movements' saga started in 2005 by music maven Tobias Kirmayer in association with a fellow German label, 'Perfect Toy'. His goal was - and still is - to discover, study, and properly represent great black american music that is at risk of being lost or forgotten. Today, his illustrious label: Tramp Records, proudly releases the 6th volume of this essential series. Though the track listing still contains amazing music you may never hear elsewhere, the series has matured since its first volume. The track selection has become more open minded, compiling ballads and soul-jazz tunes, even proto-disco in addition to the rare funk Tramp fans expect. Tracks are selected in chronological order so that the listener may get an impression of the development of of the art form from jazz to rhythm and blues to rock & roll to soul and of course - funk. As the website states: "we ain't going for bootlegs," so, whenever possible, Tramp sought out and was granted permission to release each track from the original musicians who are very often in their late seventies now. He took that opportunity to interview them about their careers, their groups, and the recording sessions from which these gems arose. The artists' stories are meticulously published in extensive liner notes which are printed in the included full-color booklet. Their own words illuminate the colorful backstory behind each track.

One of the rarest, most shit kicking Deepfunk 45s never to have been in your box, but that is about to change.


You will never find an original of this record; it's never been on ebay, I have not heard of a copy changing hands in the last 14 years. The last and possibly only copy was in 2000, It came from Gabe Roth of Daptone Records fame, Through Jeff Silvermans (Truth and Soul Records) and finally to Monster U.K collector Ian Wright who has kept it tucked away ever since.


I called Ian Wright and he informed me that in the 14 he owned it it had not occurred to him to check the flipside which turns out is pretty bad ass sisterfunk cover of Sam and Dave's 'Hold On, I'm Comin'.


As for Monica, nothing is known about her, I suspect due to the sexy word play the record may have been sold at gigs rather then distributed but can only guess.

First release on this brand new label out of Scotland.

This release focuses on the King of the dramatic soundtracks, Lalo Schifrin with a reworking of one of the unused cuts from the Score for the 'Dirty Harry' movie. Beefed up, Extended and Reworked this is sure to be a hit with any enthusiast of that classic 70's cop show funk sound and collectors alike.

The B side is a slab of Psychedelic Soul from John Fitch & Associates which was first released in 1969. Original copies of this record go for big money so here is your chance to own this classic psych soul number, given the S.T.S. treatment.
