Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club - Can't You See Me / Tender Melody 10"

The brainchild of Russian DJ/producer KIRILL SERGEEV (TUSK WAX, WHISKEY DISCO, SEVEN) this 2 track 10" (GLENVIEW's first!) features: "CAN'T YOU SEE ME", a seriously funky mid-tempo groove based around a old sounding male vocal refrain, and "TENDER MELODY" a percussive, jazzy breaks killer based around a female vocal sample. AWESOME!!! Get this!! Out mid-Feb. NUJAZZ HEADZ DISCO
Add’l label notes:
The 2012 was really a breakthrough year for SPDSC with releases on labels Teardrop, Tusk Wax, Whiskey Disco, Conservation Dept, and Seven Music, plus remixes for Lovebirds, Leaves aka Iron Curtis, Mario Basanov, Vincenzo, Rocco Raimundo and others. In addition SPDSC is a live project consisting of 8 members, with their first live EP forthcoming on Is It Balearic in early 2013.
Kirill Sergeev was playing in live band for ages before he started really recording his own stuff under SPDSC moniker, and at that time he was really fond of 4 Hero, Herbaliser, Jaga jazzist, and DJ Food stuff. One of the evenings in December (2012) the feeling of that period came back to Kirill and Tender Melody came to life. In his own words, it is really an ode to those times and music of that period in his life. At first you think this track falls more into jazzy breaks category but over the last few months this tracks has been played in many venues and it simply rocked the dancefloor, it is in fact very danceable tune. “Can’t You See Me” on the A side, is slo-mo jam based on really funky bassline with repitched notes which reminds us a bit of Manchester Hacienda scene. You listen to it and you can't get it out of my head for days.

Wiley And The Checkmates - We Call It Soul

Hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, Wiley & the Checkmates have a lot to live up to. Whether it's Ole Miss football games, Faulkner, Fat Possum and Larry Brown, the town has a deep-rooted influence on American culture. Although never even a footnote in the golden age of soul music, Wiley & the Checkmates are bridging the gap between the cultural history of Oxford and the aesthetic of American music as told from Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville. He formed the Checkmates in 1960 and was soon leading the band on shows in Memphis bars like Club Paradise and at North Mississippi juke joints. Soul legend Percy Sledge hired the Checkmates as the house band on a revue-style tour that traveled north from Memphis to Chicago, where they played behind Otis Clay and Syl Johnson. In the mid-'70s, the Checkmates went their own ways, taking jobs and starting families. Herbert married and raised four children while taking over the family business. In 2002 Herbert rebuilt a band around him and after a 25-year break the Checkmates were reborn. Herbert brought together gospel and jazz players as well as musicians with a punk rock upbringing like J.D. Mark (Precious Bryant, LCD Soundsystem) and Matt Patton (Paul 'Wine' Jones, Dexateens) to fashion a modern take on the sound of the original Checkmates, similar to the inclusion to Duane Allman or Bobby Womack to key Atlantic soul sessions.

Saada Bonaire - You Could Be More As You Are

Reissue of this superb and mega rare 1984 12' from one-hit German beauties Saada Bonaire. Hugely in-demand by those in the know (with prices to match), this quirky trio of tracks was lifted out of obscurity by massive support from Cosmic DJs such as Baldelli and Beppe Loda and drifted around the Mediterranean becoming big on the Balearic scene too. Title track 'You Could Be More As You Are' kills the dancefloor every time with an icy vocal delivery underpinned by chunky synths, wild steel guitar and wonky sitar riffs driven by a great fat b-line as you'd expect from UK reggae star Dennis Bovell who produced all tracks on this 12. Over on side 2 we have 'Invitation', a superb grooving cut with a dark squelching bass hook and smoothly sexy vocals and last up is a weird and wonderful spaced-out dubbed-out version of the JJ Cale classic - 'Funky Way'. Don't miss!

Same

Those who have seen Miss Nikki Hill sing her ass off agree this isn't just another newcomer on the scene, this is a 'whiplash' moment. Where did this fireball come from Why haven't I heard of her before If you haven't heard of Nikki Hill yet, you soon will, and once you see her perform, you won't forget her.
Hill draws on vintage female rhythm and blues influences such as LaVern Baker, Etta James and Ruth Brown, as well as some of her favourite male singers Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, without being stuck or pigeonholed strictly as a retro artist. Her tough vocal style fits with contemporary sensibilities yet evokes all the great female blues shouters of previous decades

Coffee / Maw - Madness In Funky Town

Moving into 2013, the Funky town camp shows no sign of slowing down withone of their biggest releases to date from the mighty production duo MAW. Debut vinyl release on the label is an utterly stunning two tracker oozing distinctive style and disco funky sensibility. A-side track My turn burn has MAW written all over it with wonderfully layered bass laps and nudisco melody. The beautiful vocals soon enter the equation radiating a sense of power and emotion as they flow throughout and capture the heart. On the flip RK NuDisco gets deeper with a chugging groove and prominent claps progressing into a alluring vocal hook, destined to swarm the mind and seduce the senses as a acidfunk infused melody begins to lock you on the dance floor. This release sees the delightful duo at their absolute best and is a welcome addition to the Funky town catalogue to be dropped at just the right moment ...in and out !

Various - The Sound Of Funky Africa

Number five in the series and no letting up the pressure for hot African funk label Supafrico. The fifth volume hits the ground running with the in-demand extended version of massive 1979 party anthem 'Let me Love You' from Sierra Leone's disco/funk maestro Bunny Mack. Next up comes Jake Sollo's wonderful dancefloor burner 'African Gypsy'. Tucked away on his hard-to-find album 'Show Me How' also from '79, this superb slice of Nigerian funk showcases the congo master's percussion skills and great vocals as well as some wild psychedelic guitar action. Flip onto Side B for William Onyeabor's conscious soul epic 'Better Change Your Mind'. Weighing in at eight and a half minutes with a heavyweight churning bassline and some hefty guitarwork, this cannot fail to move you in all senses. And last but not least, the fantastic Roverman by Emma Dorgu from his 1979 super-rare album of the same name. An ultra-funky cut with some very cool Fender Rhodes, this sought-after groover is a great end to another essential Supafrico compilation.

Brzzvll - Polemicals

Brzzvll

Polemicals

12inchMPM156LP
MELTING POT MUSIC
22.02.2013

BRZZVLL keep on tripping. "Polemicals" is taking the psychedelic jazz groove that the six piece band from Antwerp, Belgium is known for to the next level. It is still impossible to find the right box for BRZZVLL though. Jazz is the teacher but band leader Vincent Brijs and crew couldn't care less about rules and regulations. From the epic, arabic flavoured opener "Jericho" to the sweet and deep ballad "Reino Dos Ceus" BRZZVLL simply do what they want. Most times you can dance too to it and all the time you can trip with it.
Compared to their 2010 album "Happy Live Creator" (produced by Ben Ladmin aka Nostalgia 77) the new BRZVVLL album has more of a live feel. Which is owed to the fact that "Polemicals" has been recorded at the Kip Kass studio, owned by the band's keyboarder Jan Willems in Mortsel and produced by the band itself. In that aspect, "Polemicals" captures the sensational live performances better than any BRZVLL record before.

Peter King - Shango

Peter King

Shango

12inchMRBLP105
Mr Bongo
11.03.2013

Shango by Peter King is an album loaded with history. Originally recorded in 1974 in a Camden studio session funded by money from a TV soundtrack recorded by King a few years earlier, it remained unreleased for close to 30 years despite King releasing five albums in the years that followed, the band touring America, Europe and Japan and King establishing himself in the West as one of Nigeria's finest multi-instrumentalist. It finally saw release in 2002 by which point King had returned to his homeland to found the Peter King College of Music and continue his lifelong dedication to seeing 'how far I can go with Highlife fusion.'

Musically the album is equally loaded. Headed by King, who wrote and played saxophone and flute, the band included David Williams on bass, Paul Edoh on congas, James Menin on drums, Arthur Simon on guitar, Mike Falana on trumpet and Humphrey Okoh-Turner on alto sax. Together they fused funk, jazz and afrobeat and added hard-hitting vocal messages including calls for freedom in Africa - album closer Watusi is about the struggle for freedom and democracy in Angola during the 1970s - and references to African history and the Yoruba religion. Shango is the foremost Yoruba deity, god of thunder and storms, and on this album his energy is clearly channelled into the horn lines and devastating grooves found throughout the eight tracks.Having stood the test of time for close to 40 years, Shango is a lost classic and one of King's finest, most refined works. It is being re-issued by Mr Bongo's Classic African Recordings series.
The LP features fully reproduced original artwork and heavyweight 180 gsm vinyl.

Ruth Copeland - I Am What I Am

Ruth Copeland

I Am What I Am

12inchSMAS9802
Invictus
12.03.2013

Limited reissue of this awesome 1971 album from the multi-talented English songstress Ruth Copeland. In the early 70s Copeland was working extensively with P-funk legends Parliament and Funkadelic (including writing their huge anti-war hit 'Come In Out of the Rain') and here they returned the favour. With songs co-written by George Clinton and members of the original Funkadelic band who also supplied musical backing, this LP has true funk-rock credentials burned right through it with the acid-rock funksters' wild sound working amazingly well with Copeland's delicately soulful conscious lyrics to create a leftfield masterpiece. With a raw power and spine-tingling emotional charge, the album delivers on every level featuring superlative organ and keyboard work from the master Bernie Worrell, slamming guitars from Eddie Hazell and Ray Monette underlaid with fierce drums and bass all topped with Copeland's stunning vocals. Sampled by everyone from Tribe Called Quest to Madlib to Wu-Tang Clan, this is jam packed with top quality tracks including heart-rending nu-folk anti-war story 'The Medal', low-slung burner 'Don't You Wish You Had', crazy funk freakout 'Suburban Family Lament', gorgeous soul ballad 'Crying Has Made Me Stronger' and the inspired Stones covers 'Play With Fire' and 'Gimme Shelter'. Don't miss your chance to own a vinyl copy of this incredible album.

Oliver Cheatham - Dont Pop The Question

Two previously unissued tracks from the mid 70's, the A-side is the joyous dance track 'Don't Pop The Question (If You Can't Take The Answer)' which once heard leaves the songs unforgettable hook line firmly planted inside your head. While the B-side is the beautiful sweet soul ballad 'Good Guys Don't Make Good Lovers' which showcases Oliver's falsetto vocals to perfection and is so reminiscent of his earlier 1970's Grand Junction and Polydor releases.
The initial interest in this release has been phenomenal miss it at your peril!!!!!!

Peabody & Sherman - James Baldwin

This project is features extracts from the audio portion of a documentary film shot of a discussion led by James Baldwin and Dick Gregory at the West Indian Student Centre in London in 1968.
Baldwin was in the middle of the civil rights movement, he was in the march to Selma, an observer of the SNCC voter drives, and initiated two meetings between prominent black leaders and then Attorney General Robert Kennedy. In 1963 he was on the cover of Time magazine "There is not another writer who expresses with such poignancy and abrasiveness the dark realities of the racial ferment in North and South".
In 1968 Baldwin was 44; this was the year of the Tet offensive, the My Lai massacre, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr, and Robert F. Kennedy, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the police riot at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and the year that Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their arms in a black power salute at the Olympics in Mexico City.
His novel "Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone" was also published in 1968, dealing with issues of homosexuality and bisexuality, incarceration as a means of preserving economic and racial inequality, Christianity, white privilege, and institutional racism.
The P&S rhythm tracks are based on live bass and drum sessions recorded at The Wayback Machine in the Summer of 2011. Remixes are by Area and Afrikan Sciences.

Coming To You Live

12inchAS855
24.01.2013

Limited reissue of a massively in-demand 1980s soul/funk classic 12" from the mighty Charles Earland. Originally a soul-jazz organist, Earland turned his hand to a more disco/funk sound later in his career with some seriously explosive consequences as evidenced here on this near impossible to find promo-only release. A firm favourite of discerning DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Theo Parrish and Moodymann, the title track 'Coming To You Live' is is a seriously classy slice of soul heaven with layers of funky slap bass, horns and silky smooth vocals from Earland's wife Sheryl Kendricks - pure dancefloor dynamite! Flip over for the more mellow yet equally gorgeous and soulful 'I Will Never Tell' with its beautiful breathy vocals and masterful organ work. Essential!
