Pump Up The Funk

CDBBP065
17.12.2012

It's been 3 years since BadboE shook the funky breakbeat world with his first full-length album Break The Funk (2009). Since then, he's stayed on top of his game as one of the key players in the scene, recognised for his unique raw type of funky breaks laced with a good dose of b-boy flavour and strong roots in old skool funk and soul. At the same time BadboE has been touring the world with his block rockin' DJ-set and released tracks on all major funky breaks labels including Bombstrikes, Good Groove, Baffin Beat Brigade and Bombastic Jam as well as remixing tunes by Layo & Bushwacka on Juno Records & GMF feat. Akil The MC on Sony Music.

Dokkerman & The Turkeying Fell - Broken

It's great to see that more and more quality soul and funk bands arise from different countries all over the world. Even more exciting is the fact that little Hungary has to offer not only The Qualitons but another band with much potential. I am speaking of Dokkerman & The Turkeying Fellaz which are responsible for this beauty. Also from Budapest, the nine piece band delivers exactly that raw and dirty old-school sound of the late sixties/early seventies which we here at Tramp Records love. Both sides of this 45rpm single are hard grooving funk cuts, spiced up with afro and jazz elements. While Broken is a slow burning track, the flip side titled Plan B is completely the opposite, an uptempo dance floor bomb. Be quick, 500 copies pressed only!

Basement Freaks - Soul Digga Ep

Basement Freaks return to Jalapeno with a 4 track EP of killer funk, heavy, heavy beats and deep blues vocals. Always one of the serious players in the Ghetto Funk scene - his music has always been able to transcend genres and gets dropped in clubs and parties round the world.
On Work It Out the Freaks teams up with MC Rayna for a guitar heavy hip hop excursion. A Blues Thang features that thing most often missed out by modern electronic producers - a harmonica solo - the proper way to do it.

Los Charly's Orchestra - Grazing The Grass (una Miradit

Think summers gone Think again. Party time approaches and this is festive music to chase away your winter blues! Los Charly's Orchestra have hit the spot yet again with this new single, a classic cover of Grazing In Grass in the style of the iconic 1968 Fania Records/ Orchestra Harlow version featured in the Tarantino movie Jackie Brown. This is late-20th-century music brought straight to 21st-century dancefloors. Originally a huge instrumental hit for South African music legend Hugh Masekela, The Friends of Distinction recorded the tune with new lyrics and took it high into the US charts in 1969. The Orchestra Harlow version, led by Larry Harlow (El Judio Maravilloso) was Salsa in its infancy and a mix of Latin Jazz, Boogaloo, Latin R&B and just about every afro-Caribbean rhythm which shaped things to come. Los Charly's add new lyrics and bring back the vibrant 1968 sound of Fania, New York, Harlem and the Bronx, guaranteed to have you dancing and singing.

Various - The Craig Charles Funk & Soul

17

Actor, stand up comedian, poet, radio presenter and club DJ, Craig Charles, has been a dedicated soul boy from a tender age. In fact, he was raised on the sounds of sweet soul, "My father came over from Guyana in the West Indies and he brought a load of records over with him. There was always Ray Charles playing in the house, The Platters, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. My Dad would play all this old stuff. In fact I was very close to getting called Otis when I was born! One of my earliest memories is my mum and dad dancing around the kitchen to Ray Charles' I've Got A Woman. I remember the look of sheer joy and exhilaration on their faces. I was hooked!

Antonio Castro - Welfare / Why Can't I Have You

Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican immigrants, Louis Antonio Castro inherited his voice from musicians on both sides of his family. Latin music was the predominant choice in the Castro household, but Louis was also inspired by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole and even Argentinean Tango singers. To avoid association with the famous Cuban leader, Castro switched to the stage name, Tony Amaro, for much of his career. He also released a few 45s too, the most notable being the unmistakable W.E.L.F.A.R.E. on his own Universal International label. Recorded sometime around 1970 and with just a few hundred copies pressed up, the song laments the difficulties of a man in Spanish Harlem who attempts to hold onto his dignity through times of poverty. This rare and highly sought-after 45 is in great demand from both funksters after something a bit more heart rendering, and soulies who want something a bit more rhythmical.

Ruben Fort / Deane Hawley - So Good / Boss Man

Two more impeccably sculpted popcorn R&B sides, with contrasting but complimentary sounds. Ruben Fort's 'So Good' is a real gem of early Detroit soul, released in 1960 amidst that super-exciting transitional period in the R&B sound of the city and indeed the nation as a whole.

Turquoise Summers - Never Can Get Enough / Break Y

Superdope 12 from promising Southern California native, Turquoise Summers, and Omega Supreme Records (Portland, OR). Limited too - grabbit if interested!
Turquoise Summers pours an original perspective through vintage beat machines and synths of the late 70's and early 80's to present us with an authentic sound of the highest quality and integrity of modern funk. His passion clearly is fueled by and TRUE to the original sounds of the early 1980s funk scene, like it was 1983, but THIS sound is all his own and will carve his name into funk's bright future!

Barbara Acklin - Am I The Same Girl / Love Make

Barbara Acklin's magnificent 'Am I the Same Girl' was released in February 1969 and reached #33 in the R&B charts and crossed over to #79 in the Pop charts. Despite its hit status it remains an elusive record to find Mint - probably because most copies were played to death. Yes it's that good!

V.a. - The Dawn Of Northern Soul

24

Hot on the success of the 'Age Of Northern Soul' CD album, released earlier this year, Outta Sight present volume 2 in the new R&B series featuring more new-to-CD rarities.
The album opens with a killer-thriller courtesy of Big Maybelle, a larger than life figure familiar to all Northern Soul fans. Originally released in 1954 this dark and moody minor-key dancer sets the scene for our club soul playlist.
Highlights include Danny Owens' finger poppin' CD debut 'You're A Little Too Late'; H B Barnum's big city stroller 'How Many More Times'; Lula Reed's obscure 'Puddentane'; Little Jimmy Griffin's mod/soul scorcher 'If Things Don't Change' and Sidney Barnes' first 45, the wonderfully atmospheric 'Wait'.

Following the universally well received Under The Influence Vol.1 compiled by Red Greg, Zedd Records returns with Vol.2 this time compiled by Paul Phillips.

People that may be unknown to the general public, but are hardcore enthusiasts who have built some of the best collections of soul, funk and disco on the planet. The idea of UTI isn't about big name djs, but to give a musical platform to those who have the knowledge to put together a track listing of killer tunes as Paul Phillips does here.
This compilation represents some of Paul Phillips favourite soul, funk, disco and 80s club boogie tracks that for one reason or another went totally under the radar at the time of release in the US.
