Following a successful run of releases and remixes in 2019, London based production partnership Kassian return to Phonica White for their second release on the imprint. Continuing to focus on quality output, the pair put forward their ‘Shuffling Words EP’ which aims to expand on their evolving style of house music.
Joe Danvers (aka Danvers) and Warren Cummings (aka Warren Xclnce) form a duo that through a mutual respect for each others musical tastes and prior successes, combine their influences into their own direction within electronic music. To date they chart continued support from the likes of Giles Peterson, Jamie XX, Detroit Swindle, Horse Meat Disco, Crazy P, DJ Seinfeld, Artwork, DJ Boring and many more...
The title track ‘Shuffling Words’, is a warm and soulful house joint characterised by a rolling bass and playful synths, delivering all the elements the duo have become known for. Next up is ‘Ex-Culture’ aligning more with Techno than their familiar House/Disco edits, this one is a clear progression in the duo’s production style which builds up to an enormous atmospheric climax and is designed for the dancefloors. Closing the EP is ‘U Make Me’. A rolling lofi house cut featuring an infectious reverberating vocal catching the ear throughout. This EP is set to kick start another strong year for Kassian, where they will aim to build on the successes of 2019.

James Baldwin was an unparalleled master of the written and spoken word. He was best known for his brilliant essays, plays and novels that shone light on his insights into race, sexuality, spirituality and humanity. Baldwin was an incredible orator who commanded the power of words. Whether on the pages of his books or in speeches and debates, he was passionate, compelling and powerful. This EP is the second half of a project that is a tribute to Baldwin. It features extracts from the audio portion of a documentary film shot of a discussion led by James Baldwin and Dick Gregory at the West Indian Student Centre in London in 1968.
Peabody & Sherman is a partnership between Phillip C Hertz and Curtis Ruptash - drummer and bass player respectively. They share common interests in dub, afrobeat, funk, jazz, ambient and improvisational music. They have long histories of the employing 'studio as instrument' approach to recording. The foundations for this EP was P&S rhythm tracks recorded at the Wayback Machine Studio in 2011. Supplemental instruments were layered on to create the final product. The same original sessions were also the source for their James Baldwin EP released in 2012. That EP featured remixes by Area and Afrikan Sciences.
The same concept is applied here, with remixes being contributed by Waajeed and BusCrates. Waajeed is a Detroit producer known for inventive and genre-defying music. He is background includes his work with Slum Village through to the Platinum Pied Pipers and to his work with his own Dirt Tech label today. BusCrates is a Pittsburg based producer known for his inventive use of electric and vintage synths to create deep layers of analog goodness.

With an already eclectic catalogue of music just a mere three releases in, London-based imprint Burnin Music Recordings looks to continue that trend.
Stepping up to the plate on the fourth release is label head, Pegasvs, who is making his production debut. Featuring alongside him on the single 'Drinking With My Eyes' is the multi-talented Xuli, a UK-based poet, singer and dancer.
Together, the two manage to create a strikingly contemporary piece of music which pulls from influences across varying areas of dance music, and is already drawing comparisons to acclaimed groups Hercules and Love Affair and Azari & III.
Enlisted on remix duties is none other than French luminary producer, Hugo LX, who delivers a deeper take on the original with shimmering cosmic leads, lush chords and a bubbly low end.

Apollo are delighted to welcome Steve Legget & Mark Hand to the fold with their lush new single ‘If You Cannot Try’ featuring the dulcet vocals of Greg Blackman. Originally released as an uplifting bumping house track on Ramrock Records Blackman sent the stems of the release to longtime collaborator Steve Legget for a rework. Legget tore the original to pieces, deconstructing it into a much more ambiguous form. ”I’ve never been a fan of a chorus in a song,” Legget muses. "I like songs that are not direct that leave room for your imagination - Mark and I ended up building a new song around the texture of the original.”
Hand and Legget met in the early 90s at the Northern College of Art in Middlesbrough, and have collaborated at various times in the intervening years, through a shared love of Detroit techno, experimental electronic music, jazz and funk. Their creative process involves sending audio files back and forth - “The release was written in collaboration over the internet Greg in Colchester, Mark in Hartlepool, and me in St Albans."
Hand added spaced out textures and riffs from his collection of vintage Fender Rhodes and classic synths - taking the track into sunny space funk realms that comes on like a lost release from joe Claussell’s Spiritual Life label or Basic Channel jamming with Herbie Hancock.
Using their new version as the seed - Hand decided to try his own ’Teesside Techno’ version - "I wanted to give the track more of a 'machine funk' vibe with my rework” he explains. “I generally like to work by jamming with hardware - the bass line is generated by triggering the arp on my Juno 6..using triggers from a TR606 kick drum and hats replaced by a TR909.. the result being more of a jackin' electronic funk mutation!"
This continuing game of musical pass the parcel has indeed born some juicy fruit -

Syncopated percussion and murky atmospherics form the basis of 'Mutual Romance' before Dicicco introduces an ominous melody to generate the duskiest track on the package. 'Virgo Love Affair' then meanders forward with tight kicks and a hypnotising chord sequence before making way for the deep and scintillating 'Filling Pieces'. Concluding the release, 'How We Live' combines organic drums with sweeping effects whilst distorted keys operate throughout.

DJ Feedback
XDB:
"Right up my alley!"
Erell Ranson (Distant Worlds/Subwax):
"All 4 tracks are top notch. "Falling Framework" and "Akira 2171" are very good tracks. But my preference goes to "Ilipsyon" which I find, it is really inspired by Chicago and producers like Virgo Four, Marshall Jefferson and co. "
G-Prod (R&S):
"This release is a masterpiece! Common Dreams always on top! "
Ewan Jansen (Inner Shift Music/Moods and Grooves):
"It's an absolute cracker. Love it. There's a real original detroit house/techno mix here with a kinda pastiche of the golden age of mid-80s japanese anime. Runninglist is flawless, tracks really tell a story in themselves and together which is the ultimate goldilocks zone. Right up my alley. Halo City is amazing. Also very much like the A2 & B2. good job."
Jane Fitz:
"Yes Please!"
Dom Capello (Seventh Sign/Subculture):
"Love this! Right up my street. Ilipsyon is beautiful, like a lost Virgo 4 track."
Owen Jay (Batti Batti):
"All tracks show Dan Piu's experience and love for the old school sound with multi layers of complex rhythms, timeless melodies, warm pads, acid lines and driving basslines. The use of portamento and ring modulation surely give a heads up to the early Detroit techno era from which Dan's sound originates."
Mihail P (Seventh Sign/Distant Worlds):
"Dan Piu is on fire right now."
Reedale Rise:
"A top quality release as expected from Dan Pui. All tracks have a classy, uplifting but melancholy feel I like. Akira 2171 is the pick for me; love that nagging melody that pins it all together. Also diggin Ilipsyon with the sightly more lo-fi drums and wandering synth lines."
Hizou (Hizou Records):
"This release is amazing. I play all tracks."

"After meeting and exchanging music at the legendary Freerotation Festival, El Choop and Tim Gee found it only right to begin a collaboration. With Tim Gee's past efforts as one half of Moniker and El Choop's releases on Default Position and 'ETUI Records', both artists were already operating from the dubbier corners of house and techno, the duo's styles achieved the perfect synergy to form their first EP; Mitchell's Fold. Named after an ancient stone circle hidden in the hills of the Welsh border, Mitchell's Fold offers eyes into a dark void drowned with morphing static, cavernous reverbs, and splitting dub chords. The EP marks their first in a series of hand stamped vinyl only releases from the Default Position catalogue. "

Toby Tobias has been at the coalface of the British leftfield house movement for many years now, releasing, without fuss or fanfare, on an array of fine releases for labels such as ESP Institute, Delusions Of Grandeur, Rekids and many more.
Tobias opens up Futureboogie’s 2020 account with ‘Trippy Steve’, a trio of spaced out dance cuts, which come complete with a remix from Fantastic Man. ‘Trippy Steve’ blends energetic and raw disco rhythms with wide eyed and transcendental deepness, a powerful dubwise bassline that really drives the energy here. Australia’s Fantastic Man (Superconcious Records), keep’s the proceedings
lively on his remix here, a rasping b-line and rolling beats thrust forward at a pace, dubbing out the vocal samples and opening up the bass for some wiggy acid business.
‘Cosmic Slang’ charmingly chugs with reverb soaked piano chords and ascending synths, whilst ‘Deo Mort’ is loose and carefree, with a myriad of classic samples cropping up amongst fragmented beats and a cap doffed towards the Sheffield bleep sound of old.

Arnold Jarvis' 'Take Some Time Out' was first released in 1987, the year that Fourth Floor Records was born, and it stands the test of time as a seminal release for the label. The track perfectly characterises the stand out productions that keep the house music world returning again and again to its catalogue for inspiration. This official vinyl re-issue includes the Club and Dub that made up the original release, plus a 'Reconstruction Mix' by Ilija Rudman. Ilija delighted Classic Music Company earlier this year with his minimal take on disco in track 'In Her Eyes'. His approach to the 'Take Some Time Out' re-work has the same deconstructed vibe; the loose percussion and punchy melodic bass gives a pleasing spaciousness to the track, giving the record fresh life and re-imagining it for 2016.

Originally a member of the California R&B group Club Nouveau, this was Irving's crowning glory as a member on the Chi-town house faternity. Marcella:
I don't really remember - I only thought that I sounded like a 8 years old kid a bit out of tune with italian accent.
Jeffrey Sfire:
Sfire 1 was the incarnation of Sfire. I met Sophie at a Motherland show in 2008 (Sophie and Marcella's berlin based band). I suggested she make a dance version of a song they played and she asked me to come to the studio to help produce it. She had heard me djing many times and was a fan. We became good friends and made a few more tracks along the years. we hope to make more soon.
As for me I've been a dj since i was 16. Grew up in Detroit. Fell in love with underground 80's music (house italo freestyle) and have been djing regularly since.

Tr One return with 4 very different tracks recorded in one take at their studio in the Irish southeast. 'A Month Has Passed' uses a dubbed out aesthetic merging influences from UK bass and Detroit using shimmering melodic progression. 'The Boutique Of Never Ending Dreams' works towards a synth laden dreamlike peak. 'The Printer' duly merges playful Chicago drums with an organic chord structure to create a head nodding funk. Finishing the EP is 'Road To The Sea', a pensive sway of dubby sonics masked in a fog of reverb.
Tr One are an established name in the Irish electronic music community and are known for their energetic and engaging performances as DJs. They have received critical acclaim for the raw soulful productions from their studio in hometown Carlow, Ireland. They have gained respect for their ability to deftly move between the lines of genres with a strong sense of adventure and connection with Detroit/Chicago/Dublin machine soul. From this they have released music on Lunar Disko, Apartment and Fine Art recordings, with the strains of the US Midwest never far from sonic influence. They have worked in a range of styles from old movie soundtrack disco with New Jackson to punishing techno sharing wax space with the Phantom Planet Outlaws.

Part I (Disc 1)
The Taiwanese artist Yutie Lee covers six Chinese folk songs about Flowers.
Tuberosa, Rose, Jasmine, Plum Blossom, Orchids & Chamomile all are odes to the beauty of the plant. The flower also being a metaphor for something we are desperately longing for, but can never quite get. However you may want to interpret the songs, they are all telling a story of something pure and indestructible. In the end nature will prevail?
Romantic thoughts created in a time long before the current state of the world.
By artificially mutating her voice, Yutie Lee successfully manages to transfer the songs into 2020s arguably much more complex, dystopian reality. She does this not without a bow to the past, prevailing something of the original songs sweet essence, even adding a layer of humour… in the end leaving the listener with a feeling of good hope.
Part II (Disc 2-3)
To complete the package Yutie Lee’s versions have been remixed by, Alva Noto, Bell Towers, Laura Groves, Oceanic and Suzanne Kraft.

First recorded in 1983 under the name Visual, Boyd Jarvis's cut The Music Got Me is one of the first true house records. A staple on the 80s New York club scene, the visionary instrumental dub was played everywhere from the Paradise Garage to Zanzibar, dance-floors packing to it's mix of throbbing bass and wooshes of analogue synth magic. At Ransom Note we've long been obsessed with the record, so when House Hunting's Aiden D'Araujo interviewed Boyd - and found out that we could license it - we jumped at the chance. Now, we present The Music Got You sounding bigger and better than ever before. Remastered from Boyd's original tapes by Keith Tenniswood at Curved Studios, The Music Got Me is pressed on limited edition, heavyweight vinyl for clarity and bass pressure.
Complimenting the original release come 2 completely new mixes - the first is a dubbed out masterpiece from edit-king Nick the Record alongside Dan Tyler of the Idjut Boys. Between them they take the essence of Jarvis's original and tease it out into a cavernous disco killer. Next up comes Bawrut - man behind Ransom Note's debut release, the nu-acid anthem Ciquita. Bawrut does what he does best, throwing in Latin percussion, layers of screwball 303 burbles, and a sense of joy, all whilst keeping Boyd's original bass groove rolling.
