Cricco Castelli is one of the hottest exports Italy has seen since Enzo Ferrari started banging out motors. A veteran of the house music scene he has released more than a hundred records on labels such as Junior Boy's and NRK as well as the ,Defected ,Soulfuric,Mn2s Kult. The track "NYC" came to life in London almost by luck, about 12 years ago. My studio neighbours at that time were the group Coldcut (Matt & John). They called to tell us that they've just finished a studio session with an amazing guitarist, and they said that if we wanted he was available to also record something with us since he was right next door. I had a few tracks that were never used, so I play them on loop and told him to go crazy with his guitar, a la George Benson style! NYC is the result of editing the best parts of that amazing 1 hour session.
Big favourite of legendary american DJ, Kenny Carpenter, "Cuba Around The Corner", was conceived after I had a few months relationship with a Cuban girl in London. When we were at home we used to listen Cuban (ghetto) streaming radio, which used to play Bossa nova and Salsa all day, so that was the main inspiration. I arranged everything in MIDI, but I still needed a horn section. The solution was Duncun McKay, a strett musician who I saw playing trumpet in a Metro station at London Bridge. So for 50 pounds and some italian red wine the trumpet recording session was done! After a long editing session "Cuba Around The Corner" was finally complete

To anyone with even a passing interest in the weirder end of good-time party-ready house music, Freaks should need little introduction. Luke Solomon and Justin Harris have been keeping our preferred kind of dancefloor vibrating to the cheekiest manifestations of house music since the mid- 90s, never letting up and moving in the same oscillations as the good ship Circus Company. From first emerging on Phono through to setting up their Music For Freaks label, stopping by Playhouse, Wash House and Rebirth amongst countless other labels along the way, the UK duo have constantly given the traditions of house music a tickle in the ribs without losing that fundamental funk that makes a record great to dance to. We were thrilled to welcome Luke and Justin to remix Dave Aju's 'Nu Threads' at the end of last year, and now we follow up on that connection with a special EP of gems from the extensive Freaks archives. On 'Shrunken Heads (One Pro Mix)' the rock solid foundations of filter house music collide with flamboyant synth noodlings for a truly cosmic end result, while 'Absolut Zero' finds solace in a slower, deeper groove peppered with oddball effects tweaking and disembodied vocal samples. Heading further into loose-fit, slippery territory, 'Funk You (Who Do You Trust Dub)' lets soulful sample licks wriggle and writhe through a decidedly laid-back atmosphere that shows off the range Freaks have always sported in their output since day one. In many ways this coming together of Circus Company and Freaks feels like a logical development for two bastions of the oddball house music community, not to mention a great opportunity to hear tracks that otherwise might never have seen the light of day.

Like sneaking an extra scoop (or two) of ice cream for dessert, what do you do when you know something's bad for you, but its vice-like nature makes it all the more irresistible Vega Records explores this conundrum in its latest release, 'Can't Let You Go' by the late, great Loleatta Holloway.
'Can't Let You Go' is one of the last unreleased recordings Loleatta completed before her passing in 2011. In the main mix, she addresses a relationship she knows she should end but can't bring herself to leave because the lovin' is just too good: 'I keep coming back time and time again,' she ruminates with raw emotion. 'We got to make things better or we got to do whatever to make it right... oh, let's make it right, 'cause I can't let you go.'
For the unfamiliar, Loleatta Holloway, a.k.a. the 'Queen of the Night,' is a bona fide disco and soul icon. The singer behind successful singles such as 'Hit and Run' and 'Love Sensation,' she is one of the most sampled artists from the disco era.
The posthumous single was written and produced by prolific artist Yvonne Turner, whose resume includes production and remix credits for music greats such as Whitney Houston, Willie Colon, and Jeffrey Osborne; as well as mixes for Lenny Kravitz, Lalah Hathaway, Mica Paris, and more. Providing subtle, smooth background vocals for the track, she allows Loleatta's belting vocals to be the star of the percussive house groover; while Vega Records boss Louie Vega offers a 'Roots' mix and emotion-charged 'Soul House' mix. Louie Vega also invited his vocalist friends Tawatha Agee (of seminal R&B and soul group Mtume) and Cindy Mizelle (Louie Vega's longtime collaborator) to add powerful hooks and new background arrangements, enhancing the track with some call and response to Loleatta's adlibs during the vamp. Gene Perez on Bass, Axel Tosca on Fender Rhodes, and Roberto Quintero on percussion. In all, the record is club-ready catharsis made for dancing all your troubles away.
'Loleatta Holloway was one of the most dynamic vocalists of our time,' says Yvonne Turner. 'She was blessed with the gift of song and her energy was electric! Loleatta's passion and artistry is on full display as she masterfully interprets a lyric then delivers her signature adlibs, which never disappoint. The record's cover artwork is a mural of Loleatta Holloway created by Richard Wilson, a London-based artist who takes inspiration from DJs and producers from the house music and disco scene. Last month, Louie traveled to Liverpool, England for the mural's unveiling.

The 5th Spillway release comes in the form of a Various Artists EP, where Kellon welcomes tunes from Neuron Network and Polycron. ‘The Elements’ provides different shades of techno across 4 tracks.

Following a journey of releases via Morocco, Uganda and Kenya, Banana Hill look close to home for their fifth release and present an accomplished debut from Manchester-based producer Clay. Sounds of the city run through this record, from the ethereal synths, scattered percussion and driving low end of 'Up There' to the broken beat swing of 'People Floating' and the title track 'Shapes' that sounds like it was crafted for a specific moment at 5am in a Salford club.

Golden Days is the late completion of Ethimm’s EP trilogy on Light of Other Days and it continues exactly where the group left off 4 years ago. What started as the groups signature „tension music“, oscillating between dark repetition and moody improvisations is slowly morphing into a production style that features a heavy pop sensibility infused with conciliatory optimism.

The opener and title track of the EP recounts the meeting of a new lover in an autumn sunset. Starting with dreamy piano chords, a rhythmic bass and handclaps, it provides a beautiful musical backdrop for Tizi’s longing voice. During the course of the track, modulating synths and plucked guitars join her vocals as she sings about the „Golden Days“ spent with her lover.

Over & Out starts off in typical Ethimm fashion. Dubbed guitars, minimal beats and a sparse piano melody sets the tone for Elisabeth Thimm’s fragile vocal. In Over & Out Elisabeth negotiates her wish for freedom and how she breaks with her daily constraints. Albeit initially being drained in melancholy, the track ends on a musically hopeful note when a beautiful chord progression suddenly appears, colliding with an extended synth solo from outer space.
On Echoes in the Distance, glorious arpeggios accompany a sophisticated 303-style bass line and haunting vocals. The track follows one of Elisabeth’s dreams into a frantic, nondescript, deserted backdrop and slowly morphes into the most ecstatic piece of the EP. The multi-layered arrangement combined with Ethimm’s yearning voice on top, sound like about 3 tracks seamlessly sticked together. The track ends in pure ecstasy and the listener is left with the exciting feeling of wanting more.

The EPs finale is made up of the hopeful and minimalistic Day by Day, a track reminiscent of the balearic pop from the 1980ies. Gracefully and drained in beachside sunshine, Ethimm reminds us not to waste our days with unnecessary actions and focus on the beautiful small things in life.

Terrence Parker presents "GOD Is Love" on Intangible #527

Five artists. Five tracks. Four countries. One 12’’. Live Ones is back with a belting new EP featuring five deep and sultry cuts. Windows (formally DJ Windows XP) kicks things off with their familiar dusty and melancholic drive, pulling all the right heart strings on ‘I Wanted To Share My Feelings But You Kept Talking’. Label owner Lorca’s ‘Sirens’ follows this on a similar, ravey vibe with stomping kicks, breaks, breast beating string samples and bleeps. The flip side sees the talented and experienced Intr0beatz in amazing form utilizing rich, orchestral strings and his signature house grooves to produce the infectious ‘For The Love’. Keith Lorraine (also known as Baby Rollen) of London is up next with the emotionally rich ‘Wild Flower’. The track builds nicely into the final cut ‘Dreams’ from Canada’s Mathew Ferness. Here we see the artist at his best, using looping vocals and piano stabs to great effect, completing an EP that will work just as well in your headphones as it will on the dancefloor. This has been a long time in the making as we wanted to make sure that this EP was perfect. And to say we are proud of it doesn't even come close.

This record showcases two artists who we have had our eyes on for over a year now, and its truly our pleasure to be showcasing them on on 110grams of pure listening pleasure!

A Side: Two Tail brings home the bacon with two absolutely stunning tracks.

First up we have Moth Plant' which is its packed with gritty bass and grooves to shake your hooves. Its a track that puffs its chest out, and for good reason.

Second track on A1 is called Somewhere Over There' and its rinsed with warm pulsating chords and haunting pads, broken rhythms and subtle flavours that round these two tracks perfectly with all that Two Tail Flavour.

B Side: Modat is his name and doof doof is his game. Debuting his first ever release with us at JJ. And we already can't wait to see what else he's got coming.

First track is called Thats Good', and ITS good, really good infact. Its a straight up late night club groover. Peppered with blips and bloops and a catch vocal sliding over the top, this ones sure to get your toes tapping.

And last but not least Modat delivers something very different to round of this record. Say What' is something new, something we haven't heard before. We really wanted this record when we heard it, and knew it was perfect for our first release on wax. This breakbeat track really does boast some lovely sounds. Inviting pads, and floating synthetic fillers throughout accompanied by massive sounding beats. Its just lovely.

Hamburg's Achim Maerz arrives on DBA with an expansive twelve track package. Split across a 12" ep and a cassette, 'Experiments' is a collection of live, improvised house jams recorded in the summer of 2015 in the artist's home studio. The title refers to the fast and rough recording of the material, with the aim of catching a mood before process and self-awareness take over. Fans of Maerz' previous releases on the essential Wake Up! label amongst others will immediately recognise his trademark, ethereal house sound.
The 12" is available from the usual retailers, whilst the limited edition cassette is available from select stores and the DBA bandamp. The tracks on the cassette can also be downloaded for free from the DBA bandcamp, offering listeners a range of formats to combine both elements and complete the package.

Blue Mondays is a project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani. Both vinyl collectors and involved within the Italian Underground scene from the beginning of the early 2000s, they grew up cultivating different backgrounds; Alex was always into disco and old school house music while Keemani was more into new wave and rock vibes. Merging their backgrounds inside the studio, they come to you with a dance floor oriented sound spanning nu disco to techno, based on dope beats, smoked out samples, deep basslines, and uplifting vibes.They have already released music on Manocalda (Pastaboys Record Label), Sonar Kollektiv and Snatch! Records; In 2014 the release of 'Concept Track #1' on Rebirth and 'All cats are blue', their first LP on Memento Records.
'Everything' is their brand new single, a soulful tune made with an undeniable inspiration from the classic New Jersey sound, and a twist for every kind of dance floor. Michael Baumann, aka Soulphiction and Jackmate, delights us with a spacey, warm melodic modern old-school version and a dub mix, adding a strong round bassline and raw beats that work a treat.
Bassa Clan, the duo made by Dino Angioletti and Fabrizio Maurizi, deliver a subtle hypnotic remix, with dubby chords and a more techy vibe. Pure quality music for our ears.....

Coming soon from Petra Digital/Vinyl Recordings is the 'Chimes' EP from Turkish producer Hemi. No slouch, Hemi is a multi-disciplinarian who has worked as a promoter and a film maker, in addition to DJing and producing. Having previously released music under the monikers Paradisko (a collaboration with Hakan Özkan) and Pineapple Pop, he has decided to start using his own name for his music. His latest, the three tracker 'Chimes', is to be released on Petra Digital who are already off to a fantastic start in 2018 with the release of Georgi Barrel's 'Rhyme Goes On' and Doruk Guralp's 'Caspian'.

'Chimes' brings together 'Chimes', a Hemi original, and two remixes. The original mix gets us started, a bouncing, synthy house track. There is a prodding synth figure with more atmospheric layer underneath moving through the chords. Filled out by the layered beat, another big synth carves out the songs melody from the fabric of the track. A truly stunning track, the different figures are sustained when they need to be and dropped when appropriate.

The remixes come next, one from Kiwi and one from Mijo. The Kiwi remix is an early-in-the-night, out-on-the-floor track. You could be anywhere in the world listening to this, but you'd definitely be partying and you'd definitely be dancing. The Mijo remix is the hardest of the three, getting straight away into a driving beat. Following an extended break about a minute in, the track kicks back in full force. needs is a not-for-profit record label & collective lovingly curated by Bobby Pleasure. We believe in people. The concept of the label is to use music as a medium to spread love, unity and the idea of giving back. Promoting harmony and togetherness rather than isolation and estrangement, each release and accompanying event will act as a support stream to various issues within society such as mental health, homelessness and equality. For the first release we have tracks from Hubie Davison, Johannes Albert, DJ Swagger and Bobby Pleasure. Four artists from different countries of the world who all have the needs factor, and have very kindly donated their music to the dancedloor.

This October will see Canada's Mathew Jonson join forces with Visionquest co-founder Ryan Crosson for a two track EP in the shape of 'Robots Of Dawn'.
Canada's Mathew Jonson has quite the impressive career under his belt having co-founded the revered Wagon Repair label and heading up Itiswhatitis Recordings as well as performing under his own name and various guises such as Cobblestone Jazz, The Modern Deep Left Quarted, and his new project Units & Measurements alongside Hreno and The Mole. Here we see the synth aficionado joining forces with Visionquest's very own Ryan Crosson, who's carved out an equally impressive career to date and will soon drop his second long player alongside Cesar Merveille focused on intricately musicality and an intriguing approach to electronic music via the Visionquest imprint.
As you'd expect from such a pairing this collaboration packs a bunch, opening with 'Tempelhof' named after the now defunct airport in Berlin and laid out over thirteen minutes of gradually unfolding and retracting acid swells, resonant synth whirrs, mind bending arpeggios and dynamic, baroquely evolving rhythms.
Title track 'Robots Of Dawn', featuring added help from Cesar Merveille and new upstart artist Isis, captures an old school electro feel via an 808 drum workout, vocoded vocal murmurs and funk-infused wandering bass lines whilst modulating synths spiral through the depths of the composition.
