Bobby Champs - Drag Queen

Bobby Champs

Drag Queen

12inchPICT013
Pictures Music
20.08.2012

Bobby Champs stormed in the scene with his debut Moonlight earlier this year, universally praised by publications like RA (4/5), Mixmagand DJ Mag. Follow up EP Drag Queen shows a development; a more mature but still raw sound explores Berlin's midnight and London's 3AM. Title track Drag Queen is quite unlike anything else, a weird track, an enigma, a four four kick provides some sanctity to the listener whilst scratching synth work and unusual textures bemuse and delight in equal measure. Latte brings us back to more familiar club territory, filtering works effortlessly behind the kicks, the synths reference piano house. Charlie is a menacing beast with swagger, beautifully produced arrays of clicks massage the cerebellum whilst the pounding drums kick you in the chest. MINT400 is again, unrelenting. Its textures ping delicately from the speakers to surround you.

Chasing Voices - Acidbathory (with Unreleased B Side)

From the depths of electronic obscurity we welcome this anonymous release from 'CHASING VOICES'. What this record lacks in information it makes up for in relentless, totally uncompromising electronic might, a morbid excursion on the outer limits of repetitive funk and mental sanity. Declaring war on the formulaic banalities of dubstep and stripping away its superfluities, cheap tricks and vapid gimmicks, slowing it down and forcing it into its own self-contemplation, 'Acidbathory' reinterprets the breakbeat in the context of our present day wasteland and executes this vision with disturbing exactitude. Grotesque low-end acidic excretions slope up and down a summit of flawless arrangement, mutating to form a breathing organism of the darkest musical beauty. If the direct and pure expressiveness of punk rock is ever to encroach on the encapsulated world of electronic music, this is a good start.

Third installment on Bottin's own TIN imprint. After teasing & pleasing vinyl lovers and hardcore disco heads with the luscious two releases Lust & Dirty (which sold out in a blink) Bottin confirms once again his alliance with synth maestro Rodion. Pointy-edged synth layers cutting through the dancing bodies like a knife through butter, thrusting bass, piercing arpeggios, sexy warm chords, even a splash of guitar work and -icing on the space cake- an out-this-world chorus with Bottin's own processed voice impersonating some charming Italo extraterrestrial. - Extremely small vinyl edition on starry midnight-blue heavyweight wax!.

Tony Carey - Explorer And Yellow Power

Medical Records presents the groundbreaking electronic classic "Explorer" and its sister LP "Yellow Power" by Tony Carey. (a keyboard whiz from California) In the mid-late 1970's, he moved Germany and began working in Peter Hauke's studio. Here a reissue of the highly-sought after "Explorer" LP along with "Yellow Power" as a 2LP package. Rumor has it that "Explorer" was intended to be demos for the "Yellow Power". Eventually both of these brilliant LPs were released on X Records in 1982. "Explorer" is the more stripped down almost proto-techno meets synthed out Italo disco while "Yellow Power" has a more polished, well-rounded and produced sound with a different array of instrumentation and alteration in mood. The tracks on "Yellow Power" seem to convey a futuristic sci-fi Japanese motif which possibly explains the beautiful airbrushed samurai warrior on the original cover. Some tracks have sparse vocal samples such as on the lovely "Peking Duck" and "Queen of Scots". Comes 160 gram vinyl (LP1 is green and LP2 is baby blue) in limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. Great package!!

Telefon Tel Aviv - The Birds

The new EP features the intoxicatingly beautiful album opener "The Birds" in its original version and in two remixes that could hardly be more contrasting: BPC label boss Ellen Allien spontaneously blows away the sombre fog clouds of the original with a crisp house beat and vibrant acid sequences. Ghostly International co-founder and self-confessed Brian Eno fan Matthew Dear has already revealed his distinct fondness for sinister soundscapes on his own album Black City and his remixes for The Chemical Brothers, The XX and The Drums.

Retrospective
25.02.2013

After a storming end to 2012 with the Slow It Down & Elijah Collins release in November swiftly followed by Elias Tzikas in December, Retrospective is back with a monster of a release. We are proud to kick off 2013 with none other than Italy's finest; Ajello!
Eclecticism is definately the keyword word of the Ajello project comprising of Luca (DJ Rocca) Roccatagliati and Fabrizio Taver Tavernelli. The Ajello sound features a number of influences all of which can be heard in the tracks on this, their first E.P. on Retrospective; electro, new-wave, italo-disco, disco, neurofunk, eurodance, space sounds, early house. Over the years their music has received worldwide support from a host of international artists including Laurent Garnier, Erol Alkan, Dimitri From Paris, Andrew Weatherall, and Nick Fanciulli amongst others.

As this is the first E.P. of 2 from Ajello we decided to pull out all the stops on the remixes for this project. First up is Sean Johnson aka Hardway Bros, undoubtedly one of Future Disco's pioneers with a heritage to match who delivers a truly unique rework of Kalimba Tune taking us on a trip back to the warehouse sounds of the 80's. The second mix of Kalimba Tune is delivered by Chris Massey best known for his mixes of 2 Bear's - Bear Hug, Diplo & Sleazy Mcqueen who delivers a pure Nu Disco groover. In addition, for the digital release Verdo of Danny Was a Drag King fame brings his signature hypno-beat flavor to the fold alongside label owners Ruben & Ra who deliver a taste of Cosmic Jam to Saturday Morning. Quite a package I'm sure you will agree! Keep your eyes peeled for releases by Heion, Rayko, Fingerman, Ruben & Ra plus some other special surprises in 2013.

Archie Pelago - Subway Gothic/ladymarkers

The music of Archie Pelago (the trio of Hirshi, Kroba and Cosmo D) suggests many reference points that are beyond the usual boyed-up remit, straying into musical territory inhabited by seriously gifted live instrumentalists. This, however, would be of no particular note to us if it wasn't channeled through a love for a contemporary bass-driven electronic music.
The trio hail from Brooklyn, NYC and bring a strong heritage of their hometown to their music, referencing the deep jazz of classic recordings by John Coltrane, abstract dance forms of Arthur Russell and the unfettered experimentation of Moondog. This is accompanied by a deep appreciation of the evolution of the UK's dubstep sound. Archie Pelago know all the classic early material and have honed in on the best creative potential that sound had to offer. They accomplish this synthesis as both a live and production unit.
Meticulous, adventurous arrangement concepts flow and challenge the listener equally, meeting a healthy degree of on-the-fly processing and live improvisation that might threaten to undermine the balance if it weren't so damn NATURAL.
'Subway Gothic' became a fast favourite with us. The opening piano chords drip with pretty melancholy while the rhythm and bass propel the track forward. The vulnerable vocals, string sweeps and soulful sax enhance the mood to the point of exquisite joy. Soon after, the composition drops way down to rise and surprise again in a mid-section constructed from shadows, jolts, scrapes and odd shapes. The sudden re-appearance of our heroic piano heralds a resolution.
Based on a repeated rhodes-loop, 'Ladymarkers' features some frankly delightful fingered-bass, flute, sax and cello over a beat that has an Afrobeat undercurrent. These instruments are treated to sublime fx and processing, adding psychedelic swells. A key change half-way through pivots the mood towards inquiry, self-examining the song's melodic and modal possibilities.
We don't feel we need say more... other than those in a position to recognize WILL RECOGNIZE. Archie Pelago are on the next level.
Look out for Archie performing Live in Europe this year

Psychemagik's 'Lunar Escape EP' is their first original studio EP, 3
diversely eclectic tracks, no samples, no edits, all tracks written and
produced by the duo and has been released to coincide with their February
2013 USA Tour.
The opening track ,'Where Are We', is a full frontal cosmic odyssey, with
chainsaw arpeggios, delirious disco basslines, with beats that would crash
meteors, bugged out vocoders and synth lines that mesmerise, this epic cut
takes you truly into galactic bliss. Of the next track, 'Bass Purr',
Psychemagik have said 'we had fun mixing up genres and exploring a more
experimental route. This nasty bass line found a life of it own and took
us into territories unknown', enjoy the ride!
The climax of a lunar escape is when you break through the clouds on your
ascent to a new atmosphere. On 'Above The Clouds', the EP's final track,
Psychemagik employed a 17 piece orchestra in Air Studios to help them get
their point across, working with the talented string arranger Richard
Chester.

Nisse Nilson - All The Memories Ep

Christmas was a while ago, and New Year burnt the
last of the cash. It's January, everyone's broke and
we need a little love in our lives. Thank God then
that NIX006 is here; Frankfurt's 19 year-old Nisse
Nilson brings us just what's needed to blow the
failed resolution blues away and get us thinking
about how much great music there is to be had in
2013.
And what a title to start the release on! 'All The
Memories' is a seriously sexy number that
combines twin snares with enough snap to leave
you truly shocked with a murky Dankendirekt style
vocal that creeps up incessantly until the first real
drop. A wonderful Rhodes breakdown (everyone
loves a Rhodes) allows a short respite before those
drums work their magic on your head as well as
your feet.
'Tanz Akte B' takes a different route to the same
crowd moving effect. Incorporating a natural
shuffle in the shaker with an 808 kick style bassline,
it doesn't take long for the track's serious
bounce to infect the most leaden footed of revellers.
A smattering of echoey chords and another gloopy
vocal....

21.02.2013

In January 2012 CCO played a stunning and completely live & analog set at Zukunft, one of the best clubs in Zurich. Lux Rec asked him to reenact the set and record it once again, live.
The result is an electronic music suite, filled with 808 and 707 beats, 303 acid lines and spatial sounds. It was magic to see CCO at work, as no computer was used in the process every pattern specs had to be written down on paper, and machines programmed on the run. Following the vinyl EP previously released on Lux Rec, which contained revised excerpts taken from same liveset, this CD includes the entire piece.

Fernando - Float

Float

12inchBFKLP027
Bearfunk Entertainment
18.02.2013

Upon the first listen, the work of Fernando unfolds directly on your brain and leaves a long lasting feeling of drama. Fernando Pulichino is one those lucky guys who can pick up any instrument and write songs without breaking a sweat.
He first caught my attention with a remake of the Bauhaus classic "Kick in the Eye" released on Redux in 2008. He then backed up this great start with releases and remixes for labels like International Feel, Under the Shade, Internasjonal and Nang. He also very busy touring as part of the 2020 Soundsystem band and he is also in Silver City with Julian Sanza.
We decided to put together a long player to highlight the talents of our man in Buenos Aires. The construction of "Float" reveals an astonishing wealth of musical ideas, brazen touches of new wave and icy modern disco sounds are evident throughout. Low slung basses are also a theme that runs right through "Float" whether it's the opening song "A Place" which has a monster electronic bottom end or "From out there" which sits firmly on the punk funk dinner table; bass lines are clearly important to Fernando.

Bad Cop Bad Cop - Wings Of Techno Lp

Bad Cop Bad Cop are underground veteran Alex Cortex (XX Badcop) and glam-tech-hero Lopazz (ZZ Badcop), both well-established producers and performers for many years with top-credentials on smaller and bigger imprints alike. So different they are in their respective solo-projects, so indistinguishably they melt their unique visions into one flow of effervescent creativity when they hit the studio or stage together.
Bad Cop Bad Cop's music is deeply rooted in early to mid-nineties techno, house, and electronica but at the same time peeps through wormholes into the future. Their music encompasses many styles beyond electronic music without ever losing its focus on the dancefloor. Driving, roaring, epic, and cosmic are all apt descriptions of their sound, but so would be jacking, funny, surreal and -above all- alien. A typical trip to Bad-Cop-Land is a full on crash through a psychedelic wall of sound that has to be experienced rather than understood.
Celia Green once wrote 'astonishment is the only realistic emotion'. When listening to one of Bad Cop Bad Cop's records or seeing them in concert be prepared for a good package of that, as they have made it their trademark to surprise their audiences and to lure them into otherworldly and mind-bending audio-stories.
Now, the ever-reliable Pomelo label brings you Bad Cop Bad Cop's debut album 'Wings of Techno'. It's a trippy puzzle of styles and moods that blends the most absurdly divergent tracks effortlessly into one coherent piece of intriguing musicality. Home-listeners will cherish it for its completeness while DJs will love the surplus value of this package. Bad Cop Bad Cop certainly show us that variety still goes a long way. Here's where the wings come into play and take you, the listener, where you want to go.

Tropics - Popup Cinema Ep ( Incl. Kelpe Remix )

Svetlana Industries follow their second EP in a year from Kelpe with what might be seen as a departure. Tropics aka Chris Ward first appeared on Planet Mu in 2011, following up two EPs with the album 'Parodia Flare'. Commended by Pitchfork for his lush soundscapes and hazy pop, what's clear with Tropics is that he listens to a lot of dance music and he cares about production values. The synth and beat programming is as competent as anything out there, and he avoids lazy indie stylings and one button Bontempi organ beats - his are crafted songs, much of the pleasure lying in his gift for dynamic arrangement, which is a joy amid rafts of 'useful' formulaically assembled house tracks. In common with the general post-financial collapse vibe there is less sunshine in this EP than before, and he's absorbed something from a year of intensive house music listening, but Chris's essential qualities remain a forward-looking wistfulness, hope beneath melancholy, something even more acutely needed now than before. Lead track 'Popup Cinema' is an ear worm. Hinging on a melancholy vocal couplet over a simple chord sequence on Rhodes, this one is all about the arrangement, building and growing the song until, over the space of six minutes, it's become a banger right under your nose. 'Invitation' is upbeat and coated in an '80s sheen, calling to mind the sunshine pop textures of John Talabot or even Phoenix, blended with the kind of electro funk feel you might find on a record by Rufus or The System, with the orchestral stabs mercifully replaced by cut up elements of Tropics' own voice. 'Ophelia' is a mini epic, a strong vocal melody combined with a crafted fully realized arrangement, the kind of thing that actually rewards repeated listening. The mood is wistful, the lyrics urging us to seize the moment, before moving into a middle section driven by analogue synths woven over a vocal wash. Finally, Kelpe's remix of 'Popup Cinema' is one of the best things he's ever done, taking on board the more organic elements in Tropics original, and combining them with his own tougher, tighter sound on the organ and the kick, chopping and scattering the vocal, before finally dropping the vocal hook 2.5 minutes into the tune. 110 BPM is in that underexploited little segment between house and hip hop, and it's a zone where Kelpe has established his own rhythmic template, overlaying that here to add new momentum to the tune.

Emile Strunz - North Sea Body Music Ep

Emile Strunz continues his mid-tempo journey charting a course through the harder, darker waters of electronic dance music with the North Sea Body Music EP on Flight Recorder.
Picking up the baton where recent stunning releases on World Unknown, Tusk Wax and Rothmans left off, the North Sea Body Music was recorded in Emile's studio on the mouth of the River Tyne literally overlooking the North Sea.
Deception is an aggressive chugging tribal bomb that sounds like classic Tenaglia dropping hypnotic New Beat at Ancienne Belgique in 1989, with the track building and building into an insidious mantra of ecstatic delerium.
Kid Machine takes the tempo down even further, but sprinkles it with an uplifting dose of krautrock to rescue the track from the basement of sleaze.
...lan Vital sees Miami modernity clash head-on with European classicism as Emile Strunz test drives a sleek chassis of clean synthetic sound that manages to pull in references from Cabaret Voltaire, Italo-disco and Bobby O whilst navigating its way around the darker extremes of the dancefloor.
And just when the barrage of electro-charged body-beat sequences gets too much, Flight Recorder's Iron Blu increases the voltage further on a reprise which sees even more electronica shipped in to ensure the North Sea Body Music EP makes it back on to dry land.

04.09.2012

For the fifth release on 2DIY4 they got one big fish on board: Kolombo from Belgium is releasing his first EP on the Hamburg-based sublabel of Diynamic! Already having worked together with Kompakt and other considerable labels, while leading his own label Loulou Players, he brings in a huge amount of experience to this young label, what can only be the best for both parties. He introduces the 'Busta Business EP' with first track 'My Own Business": with a deep bass vocal which keep coming up differently in the entire fourtracker and connects the entire diynamic piece; with a strong kick and bass he introduces the EP very good and sets the direction. Tightening the style of the EP with the second a-side 'Whatever U Like", Kolombo comes around with a big melodic basslines and a vibe which keeps everybody hardly calm. The tension on this release is constantly rising with every track. Being very melodious with 'Busta Ass' Kolombo creates a ear-wormy track not only fitting for the club. 'Dancing On The Floor' is the last quarter and the track most bursting with energy. As the name already says this exploading piece will bring everyone on the floor immediately. This EP again shows Kolombo's variety and facilities to create something very different from what he created before.
